Pa It Forward

From a coffee academy that empowers youths, to an edible garden that supports the socially disadvantaged – these seven social enterprises are doing business with a heart. BY CHEW HUI LING

THE COMPANY OF CATS 6B Mosque Street, Singapore 059486

Don’t dismiss The Company of Cats as just another cat cafe. Apart from giving 10 of their rescued kittens a second home, these good folks also seek to raise awareness for animal welfare in Singapore. Even better, they’ve committed to donating a portion of their profits to Animal Lovers League – so if you’re a cat lover, do your part by hanging out with these adorable furballs at a small fee. They also organise charity bake sales and craft workshops to advocate for the cause, so swing by for some wholesome kitty-lovin’ fun!

12

EDIBLE GARDEN CITY 60 Jln Penjara, Singapore 149375 Do good while going green at Edible Garden City, which champions the movement of growing your own food – Open Farm Community, Open Door Policy and Artichoke Cafe are some of the places they’ve sowed seeds at. What’s more, they also work with the Autism Resource Centre and Down Syndrome Association of Singapore to provide employment opportunities for those with intellectual disabilities at their urban farming collective, Citizen Farm. Although it’s not open to the public, they also host regular open houses, guided tours and workshops so feel free to come by and flex your green thumbs!

WHEN LIFE GETS YOU DOWN, TURN TO THESE UPLIFTING TUNES THAT ARE SURE TO CHEER YOU RIGHT UP. BY FABIAN LOO

‘MOST GIRLS’ – HAILEE STEINFELD

‘PRAYING’ – KESHA

‘SAVE MYSELF’ – THE SAM WILLOWS

‘LANDSLIDE’ – OH WONDER

‘BE WHO YOU ARE’ – THE KOOKS ‘SO SMALL’ – CARRIE UNDERWOOD

56

‘PRAYING’ – KESHA

TOUGH TIMES DON’T LAST Kesha’s newest offering comes four years after her last release – and while it might bear little resemblance to her previous amped-up releases, ‘Praying’ is as powerful as it is evocative. Written during a dark period of her life, the chanteuse manages to turn hopelessness into strength with this emotional anthem: “I hope this song reaches people who are in the midst of struggles, to let them know that no matter how bad it seems now, you can get through it.”

‘LANDSLIDE’ – OH WONDER SOMEONE’S ALWAYS THERE FOR YOU

This is a song to seek solace in when you need a musical pick-me-up to get you through times of relationship distress. Written by the alt-pop duo as a comforting response to the postheartbreak of Josephine’s brother, ‘Landslide’ is an outpour of unwavering support. In between lines of assurance (“And in the rain, give you sunshine, I’ll be there for you”), this heartfelt tune is a reminder that you can always draw strength from your loved ones.

‘MOST GIRLS’ – HAILEE STEINFELD

BEAUTY COMES IN ALL SHAPES AND SIZES For days when you’re feeling a little self-conscious, this girl power anthem should put you swiftly back on your feet. “But it’s okay if you wanna change the body that you came in, ’cause you look greatest when you feel like a d*mn queen,” she croons, her feisty vocals bolstered by a catchy melody before building up to a massive singalong.

‘SAVE MYSELF’ – THE SAM WILLOWS

DON’T BE AFRAID TO REACH OUT FOR HELP While being independent is an admirable trait, The Sam Willows reminds us that knowing when to lean on others in times of need is just as important. The pop quartet’s second single off their upcoming sophomore album features an infectious downtempo rhythm, allowing its tender lyricism (“I don’t have to carry every burden all on my own”) to come through even stronger. Thank you, The Sam Willows.

‘SO SMALL’ – CARRIE UNDERWOOD NO PROBLEM’S TOO BIG TO HANDLE

When the going gets tough, you might “want to shut the world out and just be left alone”, but Carrie steps in to let you know that “sometimes that mountain you’ve been climbing is just a grain of sand”. She further explains, “People invest so much of their time and energy into things that aren’t really important, and you don’t really realise that until it’s too late.” With its thoughtful lyrics and refreshing melody, this folk-tinged number is one that offers you a whole new perspective on life.

57

‘BE WHO YOU ARE’ – THE KOOKS

YOU’RE FINE JUST THE WAY YOU ARE “It’s all me looking in the mirror,” muses frontman Luke Pritchard as he takes us on a trip down memory lane (“You are just a kid with a sentimental heart”) in this coming-of-age piece. As part of their career-spanning album compilation album The Best Of... So Far, ‘Be Who You Are’ is all about growing up and accepting your own identity.

SHOW STOPPER – HAYLEY BARKER

THE KILLERS – WONDERFUL WONDERFUL

The Killers is finally back with their fifth studio album; one that’s a “true representation of where [we’re] at” in terms of their career. A collection of fist-pumping anthems and glam-rock tunes chronicling the members’ self-doubts, Wonderful Wonderful is arguably the band’s most selfaware album to date.

FOO FIGHTERS – CONCRETE AND GOLD

Six months into Dave Grohl’s selfassigned hiatus, the frontman was so inspired by issues around the world that he couldn’t help but continue penning tunes. Hence, Concrete And Gold is conceived. Stellar tracks aside, should we expect anything less in terms of collaborations for one of the world’s biggest rock bands? From Boyz II Men’s Shawn Stockman to Justin Timberlake, the Foo Fighters’ ninth album is certainly one for the senses.

Marvel’'''’s Thor: Ragnarok Trouble is rumbling in Asgard. Upon returning home, Thor finds Loki impersonating Odin as the ruler, allowing the release of Hela after decades of imprisonment. When confronted, the powerful Asgardian Goddess of Death banishes Thor to Sakaar – a barbaric planet ruled by the Grandmaster. Without Mjolnir, Thor now has to win a lethal gladiatorial contest against the Incredible Hulk, as he races against time to prevent Hela from destroying his home world and all of Asgardian civilisation.

WANNA ONE – 1X1=1 (TO BE ONE)

These monster rookies are barely three months old, yet they are more than ready to stake a claim in the cutthroat world of K-pop. Album standouts include ‘Energetic’, a dance-pop anthem gifted by Pentagon’s musical genius Hui; and ‘Always’, an acoustic version of the heartwrenching Produce 101 ballad. If this debut release is anything to go by, we’re definitely predicting big things to come for our boys.

UNDERSTANDING

Mental Health With over 300 types of known mental illnesses, it can be hard to differentiate one’s symptoms from the other. We give you an overview of some of the common disorders and what are the telltale signs you should look out for.

What it really is:

What it really is:

What it really is:

What it really is:

Although it’s common to experience mood swings, those with bipolar disorder go through extreme fluctuations in mood that alternate between depressive (feelings of hopelessness, lack of energy, loss in appetite) and manic (easily distracted, racing thoughts, heightened senses) episodes. One moment you’re all ready to run a marathon, then you blink and go crashing right down – sometimes within the span of an hour or less. Depressive episodes, though, last longer and occur more frequently.

Often regarded as an ‘invisible’ illness, depression is a term that gets thrown around loosely – but there’s more to it than just a passing blue mood. When someone is feeling depressed, it’s a persistent condition that lingers for weeks, months or even years on end. They can become easily irritated, unmotivated and withdrawn from friends. In severe cases, depression can even lead to self-harm or suicidal thoughts.

In layman terms, anxiety refers to strong feelings of tension, worry and fear. However, most people simply brush it off as it seems to be a natural emotion we all face. While normal anxiety is fleeting, an anxiety disorder involves excessive emotional responses and lasts for prolonged amounts of time. Even the slightest idea of speaking on the phone or going to the grocery can put them on edge.

Between the obsession of ‘clean eating’ and wild diet trends, eating disorders often go unnoticed in today’s calorie-conscious society. What people don’t realise is that their troubled relationship with food can spiral into unhealthy behaviours to keep their weight in check, resulting in low self-esteem and negative body image. Common eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia and binge eating.

How to cope:

How to cope:

How to cope:

Keep your mood in check. Make a list of your previous symptoms – subtle changes in mood, sleeping patterns, energy level etc. – and use it as a gauge to recognise the warning signs of an incoming episode.

How to cope:

• Reach out to someone

you trust, be it a close friend, a family member or a lecturer in school. If you don’t feel comfortable enough, there are also counselling services available on campus where you can seek help from a professional.

Your mind easily runs wild with thoughts when you’re idling, so make an effort to get involved in the community. Learn a new skill, pick up a hobby or volunteer for a cause you care about.

• Focus on self-care by

taking a mental vacation. Indulge in a long bath, pamper yourself with a massage and catch up on sleep. Reconnecting with nature also helps to clear your head and soothe your senses, so go ahead and head out for some fresh air.

• The next time you feel

the onslaught of an anxiety attack, try writing down your feelings as an outlet to channel your emotions.

Figure out what led to your eating habits. Are you starving yourself because you’re upset, or are you binge eating due to stress? Once you’ve identified the trigger behind it, it’ll be easier to find an alternative solution to cope with these emotional needs.

Instead of being fixated on your desire to drop fast pounds, set fitness goals that will motivate you to get yourself in shape the healthy way. Focus on health, not weight!

What it really is: Perhaps you just can’t stop washing your hands until you do it for exactly 30 seconds, or you can’t fall asleep without locking and unlocking your phone 20 times. But here’s the thing: if you’ve ever prided yourself for being ‘OCD’ just because you like to keep things neat and tidy, it’s time for a reality check. Compulsions are a chronic chain of intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviours that you have no control over, making it hard to even complete mundane tasks. While you aim to relieve the anxiety with routine, the process itself is distressing. And so you repeat, over and over again.

How to cope:

Although stress doesn’t directly cause OCD, it can trigger or worsen symptoms so work on keeping your overall stress levels under control. Relaxation techniques such as meditation, yoga and deep breathing exercises can help to calm you down.

LITERARY

Saviours Six young adult reads that are changing the conversation about mental health, one page at a time. BY GERMAINE CHEAH

Challenger Deep

By Neal Shusterman

Once a brilliant high school student, Caden is slowly losing his grip on reality – unable to focus on anything and believing that a kid at school wants to kill him. In his gradual descent into schizophrenia, Caden thinks he is on a ship bound for Challenger Deep, the deepest place on Earth. While receiving treatment at Seaview Memorial Hospital, he begins to come out from his illness. But tragedy strikes when his roommate attempts suicide, causing Caden to reel mentally. Why it’s important: An unflinchingly honest portrayal of those dealing with schizophrenia, Challenger Deep draws from Neal Shusterman’s experience with the illness through his son’s personal battle. Illustrations penned by his son are peppered throughout the book, allowing readers to gain a deeper understanding of schizophrenia.

My Heart And Other Black Holes

By Jasmine Warga

16-year-old Aysel is obsessed with planning her own death. After all, she has nothing to live for: her father’s guilty of murder, her mother can’t even look at her without wincing, and she’s alienated by her schoolmates because of her dad. Unsure if she can go through with suicide alone, she turns to Suicide Partners where she meets Roman, a teenage boy haunted by his own family tragedy. As they begin to fill each other’s broken lives, Aysel starts to reconsider their suicide pact – but can she save Roman when he’s so determined to die? Why it’s important: The very definition of never judging a book by its cover, this novel demonstrates how someone could still be depressed despite a smiling facade. And perhaps the most important message Jasmine Warga strives to drive home? That there’s always a way to escape the arduous tunnel of sadness.

76

Under Rose-Tainted Skies Bad Romance

Struggling with agoraphobia – an anxiety disorder that causes her to shun the outside world – Norah hasn’t stepped out of her house since experiencing a severe anxiety attack in school four years ago. She gets by just fine within the safe confines of her home, but her solitude is upended when she notices the new boy next door, Luke. Instead of defining Norah by her medical condition, he sees her as brave, smart and funny. But as they grow closer, Norah realises Luke deserves someone better – and it shouldn’t be her.

By Heather Demetrios

With an abusive stepfather and an obsessive-compulsive mother, Grace wants nothing more than to get out of her house. When she falls in love with the charismatic Gavin, she believes she has found a new home with him. That is until he turns controlling and possessive, demanding that she give up her friends and threatening suicide if they ever break up. Caught between a rock and a very hard place, Grace will have to figure out a way to escape a ‘prison’ she never thought she’d get stuck in.

Why it’s important: For someone dealing with mental health issues, even the seemingly easiest of tasks can seem like a mountain for them to conquer. Written in a refreshing first-person narrative, Louise Gornall paints a realistic image of a teenager struggling to face her own demons.

Why it’s important: It’s easy to judge someone for staying in an abusive relationship, but as this book deftly illustrates, red flags are never easy to notice when they’re wrapped under the guise of toxic manipulation.

The Thing With Feathers

By Louise Gornall

By McCall Hoyle

Girl In Pieces

By Kathleen Glasgow

Having suffered from epilepsy her entire life, Emilie prefers being alone – she’s home-schooled, spends her spare time reading and her therapy dog is her best friend. Forced by her mum to attend classes at the local high school, she gradually starts to get out of her comfort zone and learns to make friends. But Emilie has a problem: she hasn’t told anyone in school about her epilepsy.

Charlotte may only be 17, but she’s gone through more than what most people have in their lifetime – her father drowned himself, her abusive mother kicked her out of her home and her best friend’s lying in hospital brain-dead. She then finds an unhealthy way to deal: she cuts, with each new scar washing away the pain until she feels nothing. Despite spending time in treatment, she soon finds herself spiralling down the rabbit hole once again.

Why it’s important: Although primarily dealing with the effects of epilepsy, this coming-of-age tale also delves into how physical health issues can affect your mental state. At the end of it all, it shows readers that having an ‘invisible’ condition shouldn’t hinder them from doing what they want to.

Why it’s important: With self-harm being one of mental health’s prevalent issues, this evocative story serves as a wake-up call for today’s generation. It details how young lives can become so derailed that they turn to “writing their pain on their bodies”, and the effort needed to pick themselves back up.

THE POWER OF

A Voice Hoping to “push the boundaries of our ‘hush-hush’ society”, here’s how UNSAID’s Executive Director Timothy Seet is seeking to spark change through conversation. BY GERMAINE CHEAH

What is UNSAID? A social-minded collective of young doers, UNSAID is committed to transforming the untold narratives of Singapore into meaningful works of art.

How Did I Mess Up This Bad: An Analysis was a play that shed light on the struggles of someone dealing with mental health issues.

to have someone else help watch my back in case anything happens.

PHOTOS: ANY LIKHITHA, ARTSWOK COLLABORATIVE, UNSAID LTD

Diagnosed with Major Depression at 18, Timothy has had first-hand experience with the struggles of having a mental health disorder. But while conversation surrounding this topic still remains heavily stigmatised, the 24-year-old isn’t about to let that stop him from opening up. The passionate social advocate has since come together with a group of friends to kickstart UNSAID. Focusing their campaign on mental health this year, it’s safe to say that the student-led collective is slowly cementing itself as a medium for youths to be engaged. What made you so passionate about uncovering hidden narratives? I wanted to have conversation surrounding social issues on a deeper and more effective manner. I remember speaking at a youth-based conference, where everyone in the audience was between 30-40 years old, and I realised that these were the leaders of the youth organisation. I then felt the need to voice out that youths were being spoken for and not spoken with, because our opinions on social issues weren’t really getting transferred over to the older generation. Why did you decide to use art as a medium to convey your message? With social issues, you can give stats and numbers but it’s the

human side that hits the hardest. That’s why UNSAID emphasises a lot on narratives because human issues are very much grounded, which is also why all artistic products are deeply inbuilt in someone’s story – because they are sometimes one of the most powerful things out there. What outcomes are you hoping to see stem from your campaign? We actually had a project showcased at the Library@Esplanade, where we featured people who have overcome or still struggle but have a more positive outlook on their illnesses. It’s called The Glitter Mask Project and was shot by fine arts photographer Any Likhitha. We had the participants put glitter on their face to look like a glitter mask, and as the idea of glitter is a bit more hopeful, we really wanted to change the perspective on mental health issues – that it’s important to talk about it and to not stigmatise it. What is something you learnt from your experience with Depression? Just to be very open. I always try my best to be transparent and honest with the people closest to me, just in case they notice something out of the blue. It’s also a preemptive way

79

Is there enough conversation around mental health? There will never be enough conversation. I think many think that talking does nothing, but if you stay in your own bubble, you’re just wallowing in whatever you already know. It is only through conversation that progress can be made – it opens more avenues to find out what other people have gone through, and it’s a lot more powerful than what people make it out to be. Are there any stigmas of mental health you’d like to set straight? It’s not always about suicide, and not everyone with mental health issues are ‘crazy’. I also think that people think it’s an excuse, but it is a very real issue and a very real disease. What’s something you’d like to tell people with mental health issues? Just keep fighting. I know internally it’s already a very difficult fight, then you have the external factors to consider, but there are ways to cope with it. Most importantly, it’s to be brave and to not indulge your tendencies, and hopefully something will change.

Have a story you’d like to share? Drop Timothy and the UNSAID team a message at hello@unsaid.sg!

Don’t let exam nerves get the better of you – step into the halls stress-free with these handy tips from Kaplan.

AFTER

DURING

TAKE YOUR TIME BEFORE

HIT THE BOOKS EARLY This may be a no-brainer, but how many of you are guilty of resorting to last-minute study sessions? Leaving things to the eleventh hour will only bring upon more unwanted stress. Start working out a study schedule and mark down topics to cover each day at least three weeks leading up to the paper. Being prepared is half the battle won!

NEVER SKIP BREAKFAST Have a well-balanced breakfast to fuel you up for the big day ahead. According to research, not only does it curb the mid-test hunger pangs, it also helps to improve your mood and keep anxiety at bay. However, go easy on the caffeine – a healthy portion of brain foods such as eggs, oatmeal or yoghurt will do the trick instead.

We know – it’s a race against time, but rushing through the exam results in sloppy answers and leaves more room for careless errors. Read through the instructions and questions carefully, before tackling the ones you’re more confident in answering. Don’t feel disheartened if you get stuck; skip the question and come back to it later. Remember, your grade for the entire paper doesn’t solely rely on a single question!

ALWAYS THINK POSITIVELY Hey buddy, don’t just sit there and delude yourself into thinking you’re going to fail. Allowing yourself to dwell on negative thoughts is a killer to self-confidence, so it’s important to steer your mind in the right direction. If you start freezing up in the middle of an exam, put down your pen and take three slow, steady breaths until you’ve calmed down.

75 82

STOP THE COMPARING GAME We know how tempting it is to compare answers with your classmates after the exam, but doing so will merely make you panic about things you can’t change. Just because they appear to be more knowledgeable in a certain topic doesn’t mean they will fare better than you, so pay them no mind and focus on what’s important. Surround yourselves with friends who motivate you to be the best version of yourself.

REWARD YOURSELF At the end of the day, your results don’t define you as a person and there’s more to life than your academic performance. Even if you fail, let it serve as a learning experience in working towards a better you. After all, you’ve done your best so go ahead and celebrate the end of exam season. Treat yourself to a good meal, indulge in some retail therapy or enjoy a staycation with your pals. You deserve it!
