Dear Teenage,

Hello Teenage!

I grabbed the July issue of Teenage and was very surprised to see my favourite band, Bangtan Boys, being featured on the front cover! I always look forward to picking up a copy of the magazine every month.

Once again, I would like to sincerely thank Teenage for bringing so much more joy and happiness into my life. I can feel the hard work in each issue from reading the wonderful content. All the best to the Teenage team! Love, Gladys

The content is so interesting – not only do you get to discover delicious places to eat at, you also get to know what are the latest fashion trends, beauty products and many more! I cannot emphasise how happy I always am whenever I flip through the pages. I love that the previous issue is filled with K-pop. I really appreciate soaking up all the fancy pictures and colourful pages. Not to mention the freebies that came with the recent August issue. I will continue to support Teenage magazine and I am excitedly looking forward to the next one! Love, Jia Yi

Dear Teenage, As an avid fan of the local music scene, I was so stoked to see The Sam Willows on the cover of the August issue, along with a bunch of other budding talents. Thanks for shining the spotlight on these homegrown talents and it’d be great if you could showcase more of them in the future! Cheers, Linda

Keep &Calm 'Gram On Exam crunch time got you all wound up? Check out these super satisfying IG accounts that are bound to turn your frown upside down. BY GERMAINE CHEAH

@DRESSEDTOMATCH The ‘wall scouting’ game has a new player. It all started when Michelle Satterlee wore a Diane von Furstenberg dress to a gallery opening and the ombre piece coincidentally melded with one of the artworks on display, and the idea for her Instagram account struck. Showcasing Michelle and her friends rocking matching garbs against artistic backdrops, the combination of fashion and art is truly masterful. Now, excuse us while we go look for a wall we can coordinate our outfits with.

@IANBARNARD Admit it, you’ve found yourself scrolling through the calligraphy tag on Instagram and secretly wishing you had penmanship as good as theirs. Meet Ian Bernard, who started out as a graphic artist but slowly transitioned into hand-lettering after picking up a Calligraphy for Dummies book. Now, Ian regularly transforms everyday objects into breathtaking pieces of typographic wonder – and even uploads videos of his craft process too!

@WITENRY Taking aesthetic goals to the next level is visual artist Adam Hillman, who elevates typical household items – think stationery to LEGO bricks to food – to gorgeous works of art. Playing around with colour, contrast and texture, each item takes around two hours to create, and a lot longer to conceptualise. But what makes Adam’s feed truly charming is that he also manages throws in literal puns in his captions, which scores him major points in our book.

@TORTUS There’s something addictive about watching pottery in motion, and ceramicist Eric Nathan Landon is a master of the craft. Filled with beautiful imagery and minimalist vibes, Eric showcases “the dance between maker and material” through soothing videos – giving viewers a sneak peek into the arduous hand-crafting process that goes into each ornament. As the Copenhagen artist so eloquently puts it, “pottery is just sexy”, and we can’t help but agree.

A POKE THEORY 27 Boon Tat Street, Singapore 069623 Filled with superfood goodness, the Cacaoholic smoothie bowl ($6) comes topped with a drizzle of dark chocolate for a cheat-day treat. The perfect excuse to indulge your sweet tooth!

DARK CHOCOLATE

Chocolate lovers will be glad to know that those stress-induced sweet cravings might be justifiable after all. But before grabbing that trusty candy bar, make sure you’re reaching out for unadulterated, organic dark chocolate with more than 70 per cent of cocoa. One small square is all you need to trigger those feelgood endorphins in your brain, calming your frazzled nerves in the process. So the next time you’re down in the dumps, pop in a piece for a mood boost!

GUAC & GO 32 Maxwell Rd, Singapore 069115 Chocolate for breakfast? Yes please! A winning combo of protein, fibre and antioxidants, this Dark Chocolate Soy Quinoa Bowl ($10) is perfect for starting your day.

THE DARK GALLERY Millenia Walk #01-K5, Singapore 039596 This new chocolate joint is what sweet dreams are made of. AVOCADO

Avocados have taken over both our plates and social media feeds by storm – whether it’s served as a classic avocado toast or mashed up as guacamole dip. Instagram cred aside, this exotic berry also comes loaded with monounsaturated fats (read: ‘good fats’) to help counter the dreaded blood sugar spike that leads to anxiety. However, do note that avocados are high in calories so those watching your waist lines might want to keep the portions in check.

THE POPULUS 146 Neil Road, Singapore 088875 This all-day brunch spot serves up a delectable spread of breakfast classics, but for a healthier alternative, opt for the Avocado Superfood Green Platter ($21) – a delightful portion of avocado, kale and various grains with a sous vide egg atop.

CURIOUS PALETTE 64 Prinsep Street, Singapore 188667 If you’re in the mood for a fancier take on the usual brunch fare, step up your avo game with the Smashed Avocado on Focaccia ($16.50), which comes plated with citrus-cured ocean trout and a sprinkle of crispy bacon for an extra hit of flavour.

MONUMENT LIFESTYLE 75 Duxton Road, Singapore 089534 For good ol’ avocado on toast, these good folks do it the Californian way with delicious avocado spread thick upon sourdough toast. Grab a slice of these artisanal offerings from $6.50.

Well, downloading Freedom will allow you to key in frequent apps or websites you tend to log on to when trying to focus on an assignment, blocking them from being accessible for the time being. Reach For The Stars

FROM NICKI MINAJ TO POWER COUPLE BEYONCÉ AND JAY-Z, THESE CELEBRITY DO-GOODERS ARE USING THEIR FAME FOR POSITIVITY BY HELPING TO FUND THEIR FANS’ DREAMS. BY GERMAINE CHEAH

LeBron James Nicki Minaj

LeBron James never went to college, but he’s making sure that kids from his hometown of Akron, Ohio will be able to further their education. Aiming to cut back the soaring high-school dropout rates, the NBA star has pledged to cover all tuition expenses for four years of study in his I Promise program under the LeBron James Family Foundation – which amounts to over $40 million for more than 1,100 students. A true champ on and off the court indeed! ”These students have big dreams, and I’m happy to do everything I can to help them get there. I’m excited to see what these kids can accomplish knowing that college is in their future.”

Nelly

There’s nothing like a tragedy to spur someone on and make a change in the community, and that was what motivated Nelly to create his own scholarship. Following the riots in Ferguson ignited by the death of Michael Brown, he started the Mike Brown Scholarship to honour the slain college student, and in hopes of invoking change in the issues faced by the black community. “We have

54

While on a Twitter retweeting spree in support of her new single, one fan’s tweet caught the eye of Nicki Minaj when he asked if she could pay for his college tuition. While we usually see celebs playing down tweets like these, Nicki surprised her followers by announcing that she would help pay off anyone’s student debts so long as they could prove that they were scoring A’s. True to her word, the rap diva proved she was ‘No Fraud’ by dropping thousands of dollars to some 30 fans – and even promised to set up a charity to help more students in the future. Seems like the Twitterverse has a new ‘Queen of Giving’ in its midst!

to get the kids to go out of these communities,” he further explained in a 2015 interview. “Graduate. Get the knowledge. Come back to the community and then they can run it because they understand the people and the severity of the situation.” More impressively, the rapper has also been sending two kids to college every year for the past decade. Way to go, Nelly!

Beyoncé

Celebrating the first anniversary of her Lemonade release in #Beygood fashion, the songstress kickstarted her Formation Scholars Award for the 2017/18 academic year, hoping to “encourage and support young women who are bold, conscious and confident”. Ever the firm believer in female empowerment, Queen Bey’s generous act also got the nod of approval from former First Lady Michelle Obama, who took to Twitter to thank the singer for “investing in our girls”. We’re not sure whether the scholarships will continue in the future, but we certainly have high hopes, ’cause the beyhive’s gotta stick together! ”I have always felt strongly about equal opportunities for women. Girls have to be taught from early on that they are strong and capable of being anything they want to be.”

Wherever Beyoncé ventures, you can be sure that Jay-Z Jay-Z isn’t too far behind – in fact, he actually started advocating for education earlier than his pop star wife! A project dreamt up by the rapper and his mum, the Shawn Carter (Jay-Z’s real name) Scholarship was launched to give disadvantaged children the opportunity to attend university. In return, scholarship recipients are required to either ‘give back’ to the community through any type of volunteer work or serve as mentors to the younger Shawn Carter scholars. Kudos to the hip-hop mogul for helping to nurture well-rounded citizens!

Ellen DeGeneres

We’ve all grown accustomed to the generosity of Ellen DeGeneres. But back in February, the big-hearted host handed out what was perhaps her biggest gift to date – four-year full ride scholarships for 41 high school seniors to any New York state school of their choice, amounting to a staggering $1.6 million in total. Over the years, Ellen has made her mark when it comes to helping those in need, and we’re pretty sure she’s nowhere near done. ”Kindness is something we should all have, and we need more of that out there. That’s the point of being human.”

55

Rihanna “When I grow up and get rich, Imma save kids all over the world,” was the promise little RiRi made to herself, after being influenced by commercials on how a mere 25 cent donation could make a difference in a child’s life. Fast forward to today, and Rihanna is practicing what she preaches as she accepts Harvard University’s Humanitarian of the Year Award for 2017. The pop star has done herself proud for her philanthrophic efforts, launching the Global Scholarship Program through her Clara Lionel Foundation which aims to help children receive formal education in over 60 developing countries. Talk about childhood dreams come true! ”My grandmother always used to say if you’ve got a dollar, there’s plenty to share. All you need to do is help one person, expecting nothing in return. To me, that is a humanitarian.”

Recalling melancholic nuances that run a similar vein with her previous releases, Lust For Life tackles themes about relationships that are all too familiar. But the most surprising track definitely has to be ‘In My Feelings’, which talks about her failed relationship with rapper G-Eazy as she bitterly croons “Could it be that I fell for another loser?” While the record is everything one expects from the sultry songstress, we sure hope she will be changing things up in her future works.

Kingsman:: The Golden Circle With their headquarters destroyed and the world held hostage, our favourite secret agents head to the other side of the pond to join forces with an allied spy organisation. In this new adventure that will push the agents to the limit, the two organisations will have to set aside their differences in order to defeat Poppy, a notorious criminal mastermind from the secret group, The Golden Circle. Taron Egerton’s badassery aside, it’s safe to say that it’s Colin Firth’s return as Eggsy’s mentor (we knew he wasn’t dead!) that has got us buzzing.

BLACK – LEE HYORI

K-pop’s first-gen princess is all grown up, and this time, she’s doing things her way. While staying true to her pop roots, Hyori switches things up by blending alternative synths and riffs for a more mature overall feel. Even her lyrics evoke a certain level of soulfulness, reflecting where she is in her life right now. For a long awaited comeback, this album falls a little short, but it is a good sign of things to come, and we’re definitely excited for what’s next.

The Year I Graduated FROM SECONDARY SCHOOL

Sometimes, the most important life lessons are taught outside of the classroom. if you could pen a letter to your 16-year-old self, what would you say? Secondary school is a rite of passage: figuring out your own identity, finding your place in the different cliques, getting over the rebellious teenage phase… on top of the mad rush that is the GCE ‘O’ Levels. We often get so caught up in the chaos of senior year, that it’s easy to forget to reflect on the memories we’ve made. In this issue, we asked the Teenage team and our readers to look back on their formative years – friendship drama, puberty woes and all. Ready for a trip down memory lane?

“Keep calm and carry on.” – Bryan, Senior Writer

“Live in the present and enjoy every moment.” – Hui Ling, Deputy Editor

Dear Hui Ling, They say that secondary school is the best four years of your life, but what they forgot to tell you is that the years are fleeting – and you don’t realise it until it’s too late. Your teenage memories will be one of your favourite things to look back on. You found yourself a group of friends whom you’ve stuck together with since day one – rushing home after the bell to nerd out on MSN (lyrical statuses and nudging battles, anybody?), bonding over your mutual love for Taiwanese boy bands, and sleeping over at each other’s houses while belting David Archuleta throwbacks. All the long phone convos with your BFFs, wishing secondary school will never end and you’ll be forever 16, are just fond memories now. Call me cliché, but take the time to truly soak in the present moment and cherish all the little things in life. Before you know it, you will be going your separate ways and finding your own paths. The good days may be over, but there are going to be so many better years ahead of you. This is the time you really start learning about yourself, and you’d be surprised how this newfound sense of confidence is going to bring you places far beyond your dreams. It’s gonna be a long ride, but I’ve got your back.

Whether you like it or not, being at the awkward age of 16 was undeniably memorable. Puberty kicked in, friendships tested by petty situations, and teenage angst was at its peak. And the most pressing issue? Taking the dreaded ‘O’ Levels before facing a fork in the road of life head on, career paths decided by an unassuming, yet vital piece of paper. I remember the moment I received my ‘O’ Level results as clear as day. With my name at the fourth position on the class register, it wasn’t long into the ceremony that I was next in line with bated breath, hoping for the best but expecting the worst. It didn’t help either that my anxious mother was waiting just outside the hallway – her dreams of me getting into a Junior College held freshly in my mind – and fellow students were reacting with celebratory clenched fists in the air. This was it. My heart skipped a beat, then sank into a pool of dismay as I looked at the disappointing digits on my paper. Some classmates and I revelled in our bittersweet states at a coffee shop nearby our school after, but no sips of Milo or plates of curry chicken could wash away the misery that day. I ended up taking on a Business Administration diploma in Polytechnic before eventually enrolling for a Media and Communications degree in university – the latter of which was my intention all along, although against the advice of relatives in fear that it would be “too streamlined”. But regrets, I have none. I believe that things worked out the way they were supposed to, so never fear that it’s the end when something doesn’t go as planned. Life might throw you a curveball from time to time, but never forget that it’s always still in your court.

“What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” – Germaine, Editorial Assistant

Dear Germaine, You’re about to be in for a rude awakening. This is the year that you’ll realise that society – and that unfortunately includes some of the closest people around you – is going to do everything they can to put you down. What’s more, you’re going to find out that you’ll have to work a lot harder than you thought you had to, to prove those naysayers wrong. Like every other 16-year-old before you, this is the year that you’ll decide on a career path, and you’ll be excited at all the prospects available to you. See, in a culture that celebrates doctors and lawyers, the career you’ll want to pursue is deemed unconventional. As such, you’ll be on the receiving end of snide comments when other people learn about your career choice. It will hurt, and you’ll learn that not everything in life is all sunshine and rainbows – that’s just the way life is. However, what they don’t tell you is that you’re gonna kill the game. You definitely won’t do it right off the bat, but you’ll succeed eventually. At first, doubt and insecurities will start plaguing your mind. But as they say, what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger, so go forth and embrace whatever’s about to come your way. The best is yet to come.

Beyond The

CLASSROOM School may be out for the big kids, but these Singapore Polytechnic (SP) innovators are striving to make a difference in their spare time. While secondary school students are hitting the books, Polytechnic kids are making the most of their semester break this September – whether to pursue hobbies or simply recharge for the new chapter ahead. But for these Singapore Polytechnic students, it’s also a great time to broaden their horizons. Three student teams from SP ventured out to neighbouring countries, developing innovative solutions to help improve the lives of others. Serving the community while flexing their creative muscles? That’s the way!

SP and UEH students hard at work on building the milk soap prototype!

Soap products made with milk are not new in the market – coconut milk, almond milk, goat milk, you name it – but surplus cow milk? That’s a first, all thanks to the brilliant minds of five Diploma in Chemical Engineering students turned ‘soap makers’. Goh Yu Tian, Lee Shi Er, Lo Jia Jee, Roselle Ong Hui Loo and Tan Wee Keat are the masterminds behind this ingenious idea of repurposing excess cow milk into soap, in a bid to help farmers in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam cope with the ever-growing problem of milk wastage. After researching methods of processing soap and experimenting with different oils, the LeX+ team arrived at the perfect formulation. The result is an

all-natural, additives-free soap that’s environmentallyfriendly and suitable for sensitive skin types. Collaborating with students from the University of Economics, Ho Chi Minh City (UEH), they were also able to understand consumer behaviours in Vietnam and tailored the product to optimise its selling points. As part of their entrepreneurship module, the Diploma in Business Administration students launched the cow milk soap under the brand FAIRE, which will soon be hitting shelves as an artisanal beauty product in both Vietnam and Singapore. “One thing that’s unforgettable was the commitment of the students from UEH. We had to work at a fast pace, but they showed no signs of exhaustion even after long days of discussion and research. The effort that they had shown throughout this trip was the driving force that pushed me during the project.” – Goh Yu Tian, Diploma in Chemical Engineering

The next time you knock over the salt the LeX+ team came up with the shaker, remember that Vietnamese Salt Wheel – a low-cost alternative salt farmers have to deliver 80kg that withstands corrosion caused of wet salt on their backs at a time by salt and can be easily moved during harvest. That’s about to over mushy grounds. Aside from change, as Diploma in Chemical transportation, the wheel is also Engineering students Lee Hui Ting, capable of storing salt. What is LeX+? Ending off their LeX+ trip on a harmonious note with a group photo with the local professors and students.

What do engineering and mushrooms have in common? For third-year students Lim Fang Yi, Loh Kuan Ming, Natalie de Guzman and Navindran Chandran, their background in engineering came in handy when they embarked on a LeX+ project to Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Cultivating mushrooms has never been easier – with Shroom Sense, farmers are now able to water their crops at optimal times by monitoring the humidity and temperature levels. Partnering with Bosch and students from Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta, the

team came up with a prototype of a monitoring system that collects data of climatic conditions, which is then mined to develop sustainable agricultural practices. Each of them also had a part to play in coding, mechanical skills and documentation. Despite early obstacles, this cross-cultural experience has taught them how to work in tandem with different groups of people.

“Creating something and being able to implement it in another part of the world, and seeing how it could help other people made this trip a unique experience.” – Natalie de Guzman, Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Quiz

Are You On Overload? FEELING LIKE A BUNDLE OF NERVES OR A COOL CUCUMBER? TAKE THIS QUIZ TO FIND OUT WHERE YOU STAND ON THE STRESS-O-METER. BY GERMAINE CHEAH

Tick the sentences that best describe you: You clock less than seven hours of sleep a day. You can’t remember the last time you went on a vacation. Your mind constantly focuses on the “what could have beens” instead of the “what has already happened”. You make a beeline for the unhealthiest junk food when faced with pressure. Your schedule is often overpacked that you find yourself double booking appointments.

COOL AS A CUCUMBER What stress? Even in the presence of surmounting school work and exams, you always maintain your cool because you know how to prioritise your responsibilities and keep yourself organised. Hardly anything makes you anxious, but when something does, you exhibit good control over your emotions and are able to handle the situation with a level head. Good on you!

0–5

You’ve had a meltdown while you’re trying to study for an exam. You sometimes find yourself snapping at even the most trivial of matters. You rely on caffeinated drinks to get you through the day more than you should. You worry about other people’s opinions about you. You have random outbursts that your friends and family are used to dealing with.

A LIL’ STRESSED, BUT IT’S NOTHING YOU 5 – 10 CAN’T HANDLE Although you’re generally coping well, there are moments when you just can’t help but feel overwhelmed – and that’s okay. On the upside, you have a good support system around you so don’t be afraid to lean on them when times get hard. Instead of sweating the small stuff, take the time to invest in these relationships and surround yourself with positive vibes.

84

You find yourself falling ill more often than not. You automatically assume the worst when something doesn’t go as planned. You often come home with aching muscles, and you don’t even work out! You get impatient when facing delays (e.g. friends making you wait, bad traffic etc.) You find yourself having trouble concentrating during class.

ARE YOU SURE YOU’RE OKAY?

10 – 15 Oh dear, you’re burnt out, aren’t you? Get a handle on your frazzled nerves by taking time out each day to de-stress – whether it’s confiding in a close friend, writing in a journal or sweating it out at the gym. On top of it all, learn to prioritise your workload so you’ll be able to get things done more efficiently. You’ve got this!
