There are two main elements that give color to a textile product. One of these elements involve the use of textile chemicals, the other is the finishing aspect. The use of smart chemicals in the textile industry in conjunction with developing technology increases the durability of the fabric and serves as wear prevention. Textile products manufactured with these chemicals also prevent the wearer from feeling chilly in winter and from sweating in the summer. The main factors “dye, finishing and printing” that is to say textile finishing, are what make the product appealing. Textile finishing is the industry that makes or breaks the fabric. In other words it can be said that the principal factor that shall carry the Turkish textile and ready to wear garment industry to a point where it can compete in world markets is the finishing industry. Turkey, thanks 962 thousand tons of textile production it has the biggest textile finishing capability of Europe; it is also the best country in the world in terms of treatment of natural fibers such as cotton and viscose. Textile finishing is indispensable for textile and ready to wear garment industry and with 600 factories in this field Turkey comes second place in the world following China. When taking into consideration the chemical and finishing aspects of this industry we can see that this is of paramount importance to the environment and human health. Dyeing plant industry in Turkey has a deeply rooted past and is closely following the technological developments in this regard. Aside from the technological substructure aspect, the industry is taking into account environmental and human health to the utmost level during production. Especially as of 2015, as a result of pressures regarding the environment in terms of textile finishing we are face to face with a new era in this respect.

This new and patented technology consists of a new polymeric material with colorimetric properties, which changes colour in the presence of biogenic amines. The amount of biogenic amines in fish is an indicator of product microbial spoilage, as well as its optimum state for consumption. FIS also reports that the researchers who developed this technology emphasize its versatility in design and employment.

Smart tags may have different formats, depending on the needs, allowing the coating with other polymeric and non-polymeric materials by conventional methods, such as printing, according to the Burgos University. Although the proponents of this initiative mainly focus on food quality and safety of packed fish for the consumer and the food industry to reliably control fish products, the researchers state that the technology developed enables the manufacturing of smart textiles to determine biogenic amines in work environments, avoiding possible contamination from the place of origin of food packaging.

of the Board of Directors of Migiboy Textile and President of Turkish Textile Finishing Industry Association, Mr. Vehbi Canpolat gave the following information regarding to the industry. How important is textile finishing? By implementing finishing process, how does this contribute towards the value and features of product? “Textile finishing is the dynamo and the biggest power of the industry. The most important section of textile is the finishing industry in terms of its capability to transform knitwear and woven fabric into fashion of the moment and quality products.” Concerning finishing process, there is a need for machinery and chemicals. At this stage what are your expectations from the producers of machines and chemicals? “One of the most important aspects of the textile finishing industry is the advanced modern machines and the required dye –chemicals. Even though the textile machinery industry in our country is not developed enough, especially for the last few years, machinery such as Ram Stenter machines together with dyeing machines have been successfully developed and thereby meeting the requirements of the industry. We do hope that other machines shall begin to be produced in our country as well. Unfortunately as regards dye and chemicals we are still dependent on other countries.”

When we consider the World finishing industry, what can you say about the Turkish finishing industry? “When we observe the World textile finishing industry, in terms of capacity we can see that China is world leader and Turkey comes second in line, as for products made from finishing natural fibers we are first in place in the world. Turkey also holds an important position in the world concerning product development and speedy production. Turkish finishing industry is the owner of the most number of machinery parks in the world thanks to the development of digital printing machines in order to keep up with the advent of technological developments. Regarding the countries situated geographically near to our country, the sole country from where they can purchase fashionable fabric is Turkey in order to meet promptly the growing demand for fashionable products of the garment industry continuously in evolution. The primary factor of the aforesaid is based on the power of the textile industry that has 600 factories. Over the last 10 years, purchase perception in the world has changed and thereby so called Pronto fashion or Fast Fashion has come to the limelight with fast changing fashionable products and at less numbers. Store shelves are changing every 15-20 days. In order to be able to achieve this we need to produce fashionable fabric at a fast pace. The country that is best capable of meeting this demand is Turkey, with its big, powerful textile finishing industry. The significance of this industry shall be more apparent in the future years. Regarding our goal of achieving an export figure of 500 billion dollars in 2023, out of this figure the 80 billion goals for textile and garment exportation as well as products required for domestic consumption, these products shall have to pass through the ram stenter-dye-printing machines of the textile finishing industry”.

Therefore, chemicals are being used in all the steps in textile production.’’ What should be done about environment and human health? What is sustainability for you? ‘’ Sustainability has a great importance for AkKim. We can say that we, As Ak-Kim, are in a leading position in this field in chemistry sector. Particularly, we are giving importance to environmental sustainability and aiming at producing new environment-friendly products so as to reduce chemical consumption. We, as Ak-Kim, are making some work without stopping in order to increase energy efficiency by following the most current technology in our production processes. These work’ being made systematically is very important for us. Therefore, a different body has been founded under the name of ‘Energy Management Body’ in order to develop the projects which increment energy efficiency, following and interpretation of electric-vapour-natural gas consumptions of Ak-Kim in a monthly or yearly basis and it is maintaining its work actively. As a transparent and sustainable company, Ak-Kim has made a lot of work in this field and is maintaining its reporting regularly within the frame of United Nations Global Principles Convention, signed in 2007 by Ak-Kim. Ak-Kim is the member of Global Compact for 7 years and has been entitled to get an approval in A level in the result of ‘Fourth Progress Report’ it has prepared in line with international reporting standards: GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) at the beginning of 2014. What is sector’s condition from the aspect of qualified employee? What is your opinion and what should be done about this subject? ‘’It is clear that there is a difficulty in finding a qualified employee in sector. Even, we are having difficulty in finding non-qualified workers. A great deal of operations wants to employ and train a non-qualified employee, but they cannot find. Young people should learn both the theory and the practise in various operations of industry branches together with the school for the sake of protection and development of country industry. Besides, founding campuses and workshops according to the branched with the support of the employer and government will make a contribution to this problem’s solution. In spite of all these disadvantages, our advantage, as a company, is to be affiliated to Harput Holding, powerful both financially and a body open to innovations. This is giving a power to us that we can easily attract the attentions of qualified employees like a magnet.’’ In which league is our Turkish chemistry industry taking place when we take World chemistry industry into consideration? What are the trends in textile chemicals? ‘’The most important problem is chemistry sector, a mass sector from the aspects of capital and technology, is the supplement of raw material. %70 of the used raw material is being important and the other %30 is being provided with domestic production. Surface-active and enzyme and so on raw materials, which are important inputs, is based on importation and this condition lead to the formation of foreign trade deficit in the chemistry sector at the utmost level. As a company, one of our goals is to reduce external dependence by designing more reactional products.’’

How do you evaluate the sector in the following period? The most powerful aspects of the sector for 2015 year are production flexibility, capacity to develop environment-friendly products, highness of enterprising understanding, and awareness of the need for making investments. The blind sides are capital accumulation inefficiency, planning inadequacy, the shortness of technological accumulation and know-how inefficiency. When all of the factors are being taken into consideration, we are hopeful that the sector will grow comparing to the last year in 2015 to the extent that we produce know-how and technology in chemistry sector in 2015 year, minimize the import input dependence of the sector and giving priority to the production of the chemicals with high added value and take precautions and make investments in order to reduce the production cost.’’

What are your thoughts on this topic and what should be done? “Due to an increasing need of technical service in textile chemistry sector, there is a high demand for well-educated and experienced employee. However the sector has a hard time finding engineers that are well-educated with knowledge in textile and chemistry. Therefore the engineering departments of the universities must be in contact with the industry more and they should increase their cooperation. In addition to that, the companies that operate in textile sector must create more job opportunities for the newly graduates and pay attention to the contentment of the staff. Textile industrialists with Organized Industrial Zone must conduct joint projects in education and thus starting the training from high school will decrease the need for the middle intermediate staff. Tekay Kimya, whose founder was in the textile sector since the year 1972, has been providing service for the textile sector for 21 years. Having come to a certain position especially in dyeing and printing, Tekay Kimya has the aim to maintain its place within the market and increase its market share more without compromising its quality standard. Tekay Kimya General Director Kayhan Ünsal shared the improvements made in the sector with us. As being one of the leading companies of our sector, can you briefly tell us about your company and your works? “In the beginning of last year we underwent a commercial change. We got divided into two companies as dyeing and chemicals. According to this, textile dyes and printing chemicals get to the customers through Tekay Kimya while textile chemicals through Tex-Tek company. But we only got separated in a commercial sense. Structurally there is no difference between

Tekay Kimya and Tex-Tek. Our goal in that is to provide faster technical service to the factories. So there is no such thing that the person working at Tekay Kimya is only responsible for the dye while the person working at Tex-Tex is only responsible for chemicals. Tex-Tek company is a new company for us in name and commercially. Our goal is to get to somewhere in chemicals just like in dyeing and printing, and to decrease the costs via quality standards which is complained by the dye houses a lot. For this, we made a serious investment in terms of R&D.”

Can you tell us about the new products your company released into the market and their qualities? “We have very detailed works in the subject of dyeing and especially concerning repeatability. One of the most important things in dyeing is to be able to dye without adding the same color each time. And to have that, we are choosing dye groups that will be affected by the changes of the conditions even though the operation conditions change and dye groups that are in conformity with each other. Thus we can increase our production efficiency in dyeing and also the dye houses can save money on water, time and energy by providing an advantage on washing. If we are to talk about each product of chemicals one by one, we can never end this interview. The important thing is to provide the standard quality and achieve the production of same quality each time. What we really focus on is the special chemicals that save water, energy and time. We have serious R&D works on that and the results we got from the dye houses in practice are quite positive.”

What kind of contribution do textile chemicals add in textile products? Where do chemicals stand in textile sector? “There can be no dyeing without chemicals. In order for a dye to attach to the fabric correctly it needs the help of a chemical. Also, chemicals are important for fashion. The conducted chemical studies lead the fashion in terms of appearance and attitude.”
sector and the reason for it is that they can find a less tiring job with same salary. Besides, textile is a business line that needs heavy follow up and unfortunately majority of the young people choose marketing branches; thus not having qualified employees for especially the lower positions, it causes much more problems to find employees in the future. The costs of employees can increase.”
What should be done for environmental and human health? What does sustainability mean for you? “Nowadays the environmental awareness is increasing in textile as well as in every sector and it should be so. If we want to leave our kids a clean world, we have to do this. Already, all the works we are doing are in parallel with this. All the raw materials we use and productions we make are in compliance with eko standard. The most important point here is the audit of all the companies that produce or just create mixes by the state. There is no equality as long as this does not happen. Sustainability is of course fundamental for future. In order to leave a better future for our children, it is our main duty to use the limited resources we have wisely and without destroying them, by reproducing them and using them without creating burden for the nature or others.”
When we consider the world chemical industry, where does Turkish chemical industry stand? What are the trends in textile chemicals? If we say that Turkish textile industry is on the top list, then we are fooling ourselves. We still receive know-how especially from Europe; but of course when we look back there is big advancement. We will get to a better place but it is important that we get state’s support and incentive for this to happen. Unfortunately because these incentives are shared among the affiliates or other connections and people are favored, the companies that deserve it cannot benefit from it.“ How do you see the sector in the forthcoming period? “Turkey is in a great place in terms of finishing part of the textile, and it will be among the leaders in terms of knowledge and experience in the future. Textile will never end in Turkey but I think people that give importance to brand and work really hard at it must get better in return.”

What is the qualified staff condition of the sector? What are your thoughts on this and what should be done? “It is a fact that it is difficult to find qualified employees and unfortunately this is not a problem special to our sector only. It will be very classic but it can be solved through education and actually it is a subject that you can have long-term feedbacks.”

When we consider the world chemical industry, where does Turkish chemical industry stand? What are the trends in textile chemicals? “Even though Chemical Industry constitutes an important part of our economy, it does not get its deserved place due to being a developing sector that is dependent on importation. It is
56
TEKSTİL TERBİYE VE KİMYASALLARI TE TILE FINISHING AND CHEMICALS
important especially for Turkey to start supporting the works on producing high value added chemicals that cannot be produced in Turkey and imported. We think decreasing its share in importation, increasing its share in exportation and producing chemicals with high price per unit and with high added value.” How do you see the sector in the forthcoming period? “I can say that we are in the vaguest periods in this matter. While political developments change in the geography we live in fast enough to surprise the politics experts, long term anticipations cannot be more than mere wishes. Stillness in the western economies, political unrest in the other neighboring countries as well as the countries we trade with, subjects in our country such as elections and peace processes create an equation with multiple variables. It is certain that the upcoming period will be more difficulty; therefore we will need to pass it with products of high added value, creating new job opportunities with least damage and act more dynamically. The time flies more expensively and faster than ever before.”

What is the importance of textile finishing? What kind of value and quality does finishing process add to the product? “We call the altogether processes of getting the fabric or yarn ready for dyeing, printing, finishing etc. as finishing. In order to ready the textile products for usage, finishing is required for every step. During the finishing process the appearance of the fabric (dye, print, polishing, lubrication), attitude of the fabric (softening, thickening, enlivening) and usage characteristics (non-shrink, non-wrinkling, nonflammable, flammability, endurance etc.) are developed. Even though finishing process is applied for every step, the majority is done in the fabric form. With the finishing process of the fabric you can enrich your presentation and get into prominence. Thanks to the finishing processes, you can have fashionable and value added fabrics.”

on manpower and textile at the same time. This creates the main source for problems. While machinery producers produce their machines, they must provide us with the easy and understandable technologies that will decrease the needs of as many people as possible. They must improve their automation systems and ensure standardization in production. The state must support the local machinery producers and us in this matter. Incentives must be given. Our foreign dependency must be decreased. If we want to have a say in textile sector in the world, we are expecting them to work on minimum energy, maximum repeatability. Other side of this job is the chemical producers. We are actually part of a chain. Whatever we expect from the machinery producers, we expect the same from the chemical producers. Having perfect production lot continuity. Instead of working on the classical sense of chemicals we know, they must work on the chemicals that will save time and energy for the facilities. I believe that they should be working on chemicals with less harmful waste load, chemicals and processes that will combine the processes, chemicals that will require lower temperature etc.” Do we have the sufficient know-how for the finishing of different fabric and yarns with desired quality? What are the conditions of finishing businesses? “The world became globalized. This made accessing the information much easier. Work-

ing merely on researching can be sufficient if you have the necessary technology. We have been doing the textile business in Turkey for many years now. We have experienced staff of low and high levels. As I mentioned above, we made a significant progress towards machinery, dye, chemical production. When I look at the investments made in yarn, knit, dye house businesses, I find them positive.”

. A What should be done for the environmental and human health? The world can no longer carry the pollution burden. I think the recent amendments made in legal regulations of Turkey concerning the environmental and human health are sufficient. However, I find that the application of these regulations problematic. I think the environmental awareness and the safety of human health are related with culture. The education about these topics must start from the kindergartens. Sustainability means humanity’s meeting the needs without jeopardizing the future generations and also continuing to improve.”

What is the qualified employee condition of the sector? What are your views on this and what should be done? The number of textile and engineering faculty graduates increased, and this caused a decrease in the department points. Newly graduated young engineers do not want to work at the production lines. They prefer jobs that require less effort and time. I had a chance to interview the senior year students of textile engineering of one of the successful universities in Turkey. All of them were all improved, well-educated young individuals that could speak foreign languages, and for all of them what I mentioned above was valid. They look at the sector desperately. The biggest work to do is to explain ourselves to these young people, we must show them that the sector is not finished and the investments made. We should be giving seminars and conferences at the end of semesters if necessary. The most important way to transfer our investments for the future generations is to look after these young people.”
. What would you like to say about the future of our finishing industry? “Turkish finishing industry must move from making money through contract works to direct exportation. In order to get to this level, it needs to create designs and change itself. It means to be a candidate in place of Italy. Turkish producers already started replacing Italians in the fairs abroad.”

A dyestuffs company with a new name but a long history wants to help clothing companies on their way to eco-conscious fashion, with a range of products created from agricultural waste. And it is embracing the latest in communications technology to enable transparency of the supply chain to consumers. Archroma, a global leader in color and specialty chemicals, is combining the old and the new in a range of “biosynthetic” dyes for cotton and cellulose-based fabrics EARTHCOLORS - which are derived from almond

shells, saw palmetto, rosemary leaves, and other natural products. EARTHCOLORS make use of agriculture waste products that would otherwise be sent to landfill. They can be used to provide rich red, brown and green colors to denim and casualwear. Wearing its heart on its sleeve, so to speak, Archroma is providing brand owners with the possibility of transparency along the complete supply chain for EARTHCOLORS. And it is also offering to make that transparency available to clothes shoppers – just as long as they have a smartphone with them. Archroma will put all the information about individual batches of color on hang tags to be attached to each item of clothing. Each hang tag incorporates a chip with all the information on it, and that information can be accessed by the prospective buyer in the shop using Near Field Communications (NFC) technology incorporated into their phone. Archroma believes that this is the first time that NFC is being used in this way. NFC is a relative of RFID, or Radio Frequency Identification, which many retailers already use for tracking products. But NFC is more sophisticated and more consumer friendly. Archroma is hoping that it will provide shoppers with a more “involved” buying experience. “Our aim is to give consumers a choice,” says Alan Cunningham, Head of Textiles Dyes Marketing at Archroma. “We all should have the possibility to choose the fashion option with the least environmental impact and to be safe in the knowledge that there is substance behind what is claimed on the label. With EARTHCOLORS, we allow just that.” The chip can contain information such as the mill which dyed the fabric and where the garment was laundered, as well as the source of bio-based raw material. They have the overall performance of the company’s existing range of sulfur dyes made from conventional raw materials. Archroma describes this new development as a step-change in dyes manufacturing and coloration technology. To make EARTHCOLORS, Archroma transforms biomass from waste products of the agriculture and herbal sectors in a patent-pending process. “Not one square meter of land is set aside to grow the raw material for these dyes, so there is no competition for arable land,” says Cunningham. The new range is produced near Barcelona, Spain, with all raw materials sourced from within a radius of 500 km. “At Archroma we are dedicated to developing the latest technologies to deliver fashion trends in the most sustainable ways possible,” says Cunningham. “We aim at helping brand owners and textile mills by letting them know how our colors are made, and how and where our raw materials are made. We are more than happy to share that information, not only with our customers, but also the final consumer.”

What is the importance of finishing in textile? What kind of value and qualities are added to the product with the finishing process? “All the links are very important in every sector. For the textile sector, fiber, yarn, knit, color-finishing, confection and of course marketing – merchandizing each have importance. The importance of finishing comes from the complexity of the job, and its direct impact on the processes before and after. There is not a single field of specialty like the other jobs in the dye house. If 30% of the job necessitates textile and its engineering, the other 70% necessitates chemistry, machine and business administration along

with the engineering. Improving / polishing or worsening / darkening the previously made works are directly the work of finishing sector. The job is not over only through investments, it needs an attention and follow up for 24/7. As one of the businessman among the leaders of the sector; while there is a potential to build a yarn factory in every city and operate them, one color – finishing business may take most of your time. The success of one country’s textile sector is determined upon analyzing consciously or unconsciously but directly through finishing sector. There are many confection facilities in Russia as well, but nobody talks about the success of Russia in textile sector because they do not have finishing sector and supporting sectors.” There is a need for machinery and chemicals for the finishing process. What are your expectations from machinery and chemistry producers at this stage? “What makes one sector successful is the success stories of its sub/supporting sectors as well as their own success story. The supports of the finishing sector are machinery and chemistry sector. Both sectors have written their own success stories throughout the years. Machinery sector became a sector that operated mostly abroad for majority of the fields. Of course, it is not possible to expect the opposite from this sector of 100 year-long with providing minimum of 50 years for the textile sector. However, there are many things to do in terms of marketing and product choice. The ability to produce ma-

chines better than the ones built by Italians and Germans in Turkey exist in the bosses of this sector as well as its manpower and substructure. Selling the same machine you sell abroad, for a more expensive price for a local company 10 kilometers away from your factor “hurts the trust”. I think that everybody’s trying to create only dying machine or stenter, and being dependent on abroad for products like topstitch and mercerized do not befit neither Turkish industrialists nor Turkish mechanics. Similarly chemistry sector is based on bringing the raw material to Turkey and diluting it instead of finding something new. In that case, it is dye houses’ responsibility to use the machines and chemicals found and developed by others and to produce the products needed again abroad relatively cheaper in Turkey. Everybody knows that there are many things to do in textile through cooperation, but unlike rest of the world the logic that “it can be small as long as it is mine” cannot be erased from our genes. Our fabrics are still tested by foreign institutions; our certificates are still given to us by foreign institutions. The study to determine the possibility of giving different results for the same fabric observed among these institutions from time to time, causes very delayed results regardless of the intensive dialog seeking conducted by the related trade bodies.” Do we have sufficient know-how for the desired quality finishing of the different fabric or yarns? What are the conditions of finishing and our dye houses? “Turkey has made a huge progress in the finishing sector in the past 20 years. This is of course very much related with the kilometer that was created. Just like when we are having a heart surgery we trust an operator that has conduct-

ed this special operation many times, finishing sector also gained a lot of experience due to the decrease of focus that took place in this sector in Europe. Until the last 10 years, the retired textile businessmen of Switzerland and England used to come to Turkey and gave consultancy by sharing their knowledge and experiences. In the recent years we do not hear of such things because Turkey started transferring know-how to countries like Uzbekistan, Syria, Russia and Algeria. It learned to become victorious after many defeats. Today the majority of the dye houses we have got much higher above the middle scale with their new equipment pool.”

What should be done for the environmental and human health? What needs to be done here is regulated in our country through laws and legislations. The subject to pay attention to here is to organize the transmission very well and not to give in the competition supremacy for no one by avoiding the exaggeration. Environmental and human health awareness has risen in every part of the society and everybody is aware of the world they live in. We constantly encounter the concept of sustainability. The terms majority of us did not know 10 years ago are now given as assignments for the elementary school children. The correlation between the economic progress

What is the qualified employee condition of the sector? What are your views on this subject and what must be done? “As I stated earlier, the more operation the doctor performs much better he makes progress in that field. We made a big advancement concerning the staff. The problem is no longer about having a qualified employee but the mentality has to change. Bosses, managers must keep their staff open for innovations. We must stop thinking like Turks. We can stick to our traditions but we have to change the operational systematic. Of course there are habits within our genes, we can always listen to the person “brining new wines into the old bottles”, we can protect the one leaving the flock from the wolf and we can listen to the ones thinking differently. Otherwise “innovation” “development” cannot be more than a fantasy spoken in the Universities, institutions like TÜBİTAK or televisions spoken by the statesmen.” When the world finishing industry is considered, what would you like to say about the future of Turkish finishing industry? “When we consider the market, manpower and substructure, alternative to Turkish finishing sector cannot be found.”

In addition to the end products it provides such as plastic, cosmetics, medicines and dyes, chemical industry has an important role in economy as a sector providing byproducts and raw materials to many sectors. 70 % of the raw materials used in the sector (organic, inorganic chemicals, dyes and pigments, industrial gases, medical chemicals, rubber, plastic etc.) are obtained through import and 30 % are through domestic production. Chemical industry is aiming to have a leading position in the world with its products of high added value, sensitive to environmental and human health in a sustainable and competitive way by improving the balance of foreign trade in favor of its country. We talked with İstanbul Chemical Materials and Products Exporters Unions (İKMİB) Chairman of the Executive Board Murat Akyüz, who continues his works within this framework.

Tekstil kimyasalları, tekstil ürünlerine nasıl bir katkı sağlıyor. Kimyasallar tekstil sektörünün neresinde yer alıyor? Ü
Can you briefly talk about the development of Turkish Chemical Industry? “Turkish chemical industry has a key role in our economy. It has entered almost all industrial branches and it provides the by product. It owns important sub sectors such as mineral oils and fuels, plastic products, dye, cosmetics, medicine and pharmaceutical products and medical products. Within the period of 10 years, there was a fast growth in all of our sub sectors. When we consider it in terms of exportation, we see that the sector exportation, which was 4 billion 995 million dollars in the year 2004, reached 18 billion dollars in the year 2014. Chemistry has reached a position that appeals to byproducts and became the input of many of the sectors.” What are your targets for the forthcoming future as İKMİB (İstanbul Chemical Materials and Products Exporters Unions)? “Our union, which operates under the roof of İMMİB (İstanbul Chemical Materials and Products Exporters Unions), is working to get Turkish chemical industry powerful in the foreign markets and to increase its exportation. It guides the exporting companies in the chemical industry and works hard for the solution of the sector’s problems. International Fairs and Sectoral Trading Committees, which is organized by our union, play an important role in helping the Turkish exporters’ access to new markets. With the info and national participation fair organizations held in the leadership of İKMİB, works conducted within the scope of UR-GE, trades and initial committees, 415 sector companies traveled 373 thousand kilometers in the last year. In addition to the new market operations we are informing our companies in order to protect their share in the current markets. We are giving support for the creation of new projects that will increase the competitive power of chemical sector against other sectors. We, as chemical industry, aim to reach an exportation worth of 50 billion dollars in the year 2023. All of our operations and works move forward towards this aim. As İKMİB, the works we will conduct with trading and purchasing committees, national participation fair organizations within the scope of UR-GE continue non-stop. We will try to balance our exportations with neighboring countries, which were interrupted due to especially the environmental and geopolitical problem, with other markets we accessed such as Far East and Asia, South America and Sub Saharan Africa.”

What should be done for the environmental and human health? What does sustainability mean for you? “One of the most important topics of today is helping the sustainability of the world and environment. In terms of sensitivity towards environment and humans, Turkey is at the same level with Europe and other developed countries. Many of our companies partaking in the sector produce by taking environmental and human sensitivity into consideration. Innovative products, technology and R&D investments gain importance at this point.” How do you see the sector in the forthcoming period? “Due to the shrinking we observe in our exportation markets, euro-dollar parity and decreasing petroleum prices, there were some recessions in our chemical exportation within the first month of the year. Our sectors, which have important place in the exportation of plastic, rubber and cosmetics, have losses in their exportation. When the chemical exportation is considered on the basis of numbers, it is seen that there was an exportation worth of 1,1 million tons in the same month of last year while this year the amount is 1,4 million tons. Despite all the negativities and exportation loss, chemical industry increased by 20% in the first month of the year. We continue to enlarge our foreign markets. We will feel the impacts of this recovery in the upcoming months.” When the world chemical industry is considered, where does our Turkish chemical industry stand? “Turkish chemical sector is among the fastest developing and growing sectors of the world market. There are significant developments in our sub sectors. For example, plastic industry got to the second place with the increase both in exportation and in production. Our country is expected to become the biggest plastic producer in the year 2016. We are also in a good position in many of the product groups within the cosmetic sector. We are in the first three in the world in soap and hair products, and we are the second biggest wet wipes producers in the world. There are serious developments in dye sector as well. Turkish dye sector is the 6th biggest dye producer within Europe. The sub production areas of dye sector are also in a fast growth. All these improvements are promising for the future of the sector.”

opment Manager Muharrem Altıntaş talks about the solutions they presented in the fair: “Due to the very fast entrance of textile sector into digital, color works came into an important position. As you know the companies obtain transfer print and digital printing tools because of their small circulation and boutique printing needs. Therefore, digital printing became a sector fast accelerating within textile sector and a sector that companies invest in swiftly. Therefore the subject of color management, which the sector was not familiar with it so much before, became more prominent. Due to the necessity that departments prior to printing feel for seeing the color to be printed correctly on the screen, especially pattern design workshops and rehearsal screens with high color sensitivity became important. Advertising agencies, printing press and newspapers are more conscious about this subject. Proof monitors are a solution that have been known and used by printing presses and advertising agencies for many years. Textile sector is at a point that has been researching about this subject and searching for a product in order to find a solution for the past year. We as World Information Technologies started to give service to the sector with our solutions since the Printekk fair with the NEC brand. Prior to printing, we have a significant experience of many years in the subjects of, color calibration and color matchin (color management). We made a great effort in helping another brand to exist in the color management field and to create the brand recognition. At the moment we are using our knowledge and support to strengthening the place of NEC brand within the sector. NEC has advantages concerning this point. It has a more corporate structure and operates as NEC Turkey; it has its direct support. At the same time the product distribution is realized by Heidelberg Turkey. Due to having a very serious establishment behind, it acts with a more powerful and down-to-earth attitude in the market. We

undertook the main distribution of NEC brand and especially the SpectraView series screens. These screens have a wider color population in comparison to its competitors because of the panel technology. Thus, they are products that enable the companies see the printing colors correctly on the screen in the color matching and color management works. Apart from the graphic, EC also has industrial products such as dual screens and large scaled touch screens. We as World Information Technologies provide service to our customers that are after high quality products with color consistency through World Information Technologies. We have been active in textile since the last year, however there is a serious demand and agenda in question. CORRECT MONITOR SELECTION Stating that they received positive feedback in the fair, Muharrem Altıntaş adds also the sector is getting increasingly aware and therefore they started to look for new products concerning the color management. Altıntaş continues: “The interest in digital sector increased in a textile sector such as FESPA, and being in a fair that presented a product for it was important for us. Although the interest in fair was lower than expected, we managed to get in touch with the customers to a large extent. In this sense, it was a beneficial fair for was though it was our first. In textile design, the patterns on the fabric are either drawn with the special pattern design software or new pattern variants are produced with the repetition of a sample print if there is any. These variants can be thought as different color options of the same pattern. Therefore they need to see whether the different pattern designs are printed the way they wanted through the current printing system they have. In this sense, it is important that they use correct screen. The main factor here is to have the pattern they designed to be printed correctly. That is why the pattern design workshops are always looking for a screen where they can see the correct color.” TEXTILE SECTOR IS ADVANCING FAST Emphasizing that textile sector operates much more dynamically and swiftly than the printing press sector, Muharrem Altıntaş adds: “Though digital came to paper printing earlier, it cannot accelerate as much. The textile sector in this sense is more active and dynamic. Within the past year there is a significant rise in demand although we provided the sector with products. Therefore I think that there is a huge potential for companies like us that sell supporting products.”

If our cotton could speak, it would describe the extraordinary people behind its growth and cultivation. Our farmers are passionate: about their work, their crops and their communities. They are devoted to transforming an element from the earth into a fiber of our lives. They see a singular vision of the crop’s connection to what matters every day, and its embrace of all. To convey this spirit, Cotton USA is excited to present its new “Love My Cotton” global advertising campaign at Texworld, Paris, 2015. The campaign, which highlights key cotton looks, will be brought to life through images and videos, and will be rolled out throughout the year across a range of platforms- from glossy magazines to social media, events and promotions. The clean modernity of the campaign emphasizes U.S. cotton qualities. It is pure and clean, of the highest quality, and grown and farmed responsibly: a living ingredient born in the USA from seed, sun and soil. We continue to bring such energy and passion to Texworld Paris and invite show-goers to visit our newly designed booth to discover the Cotton USA Marketing and Licensing program, which operates globally and offers a wide range of benefits and services. In addition, the Cotton USA Sourcing Program can help develop and nurture business relationships along the entire supply chain by connecting buyers and sellers around the world.

Cooperation with FKT to promote body compatible textiles. ”Cooperation with Lenzing is an important step to establish the FKT label in the textile industry,” Prof.Dr. Michael Doser, Board Member of the Fördergemeinschaft Körperverträgliche Textilien, explains. “The FKT label is a reliable quality characteristic for strictly scientific and independently tested textiles,” he says. FKT awards the label “MEDICALLY TESTED - TESTED FOR TOXINS” which is a reliable quality label for textiles that don’t release any chemicals that may irritate the skin or damage a person’s health. This unique combination of tests for harmful substances and for sensitive effect-based body compatibility provides double tested safety. The manufacturers of high-quality textiles use this scientific certification to verify their quality standards and build a high degree of confidence with their end customers. These high-quality testing standards ensure that the TENCEL® fiber meets the strictest skin compatibility tests in line with the approval criteria for medical devices. This generates trust and transparency in and for the end consumer and offers considerable influence when it comes to the decision to buy the textile.

With the introduction of the rotating tangle unit RoTac3 at the Domotex 2015 in Hanover, the Oerlikon Segment Manmade Fibers paved the innovative way to the future of BCF technology. Oerlikon Neumag’s highlight enables substantial energy savings and creates many further advantages for the production of BCF carpet yarn with the 3-end plant S+. The tangling or intermingling plays a decisive part in the production of BCF yarns. Through the tangle knots, loop formations are prevented when tufting and weaving the carpets. Furthermore, they also define the colour mixtures of tricolor yarns and thus enable a homogenous appearance of so-called tricolor carpets. The constant increase of productivity respectively, the process speeds implicated increasing demands on the tangling, resulting in higher air pressures and a double tangling unit. The compressed air consumption significantly increased. Additionally, so-called tangle dropouts occurred at very high process speeds. “The RoTac tangle unit has been the effective solution for the single-end BCF plant Sytec One since 2012. In the meantime, practically all Sytec Ones are sold with the RoTac. However in order to use this technology for our flagship S+, a considerable amount of detailed work was necessary“, stated Mathias Stündl, Head of BCF Development at Oerlikon Neumag. RoTac3: A further plus for the S+ The new RoTac3 is perfectly tuned for the 3-end BCF plant S+. In comparison to conventional tangle units, the RoTac technology forms the tangle knots with a pulsating instead of a continuous air

current. The core element of the RoTac is a rotating nozzle jacket which has several holes with a corresponding spacing according to the required number of knots. If a hole is positioned over the compressed air opening, an air blast is released and tangles the yarn. Therefore compressed air is only consumed if a tangle knot is to be formed. The necessary volume flow and therefore the energy consumption are significantly reduced. In comparison to conventional tangle units, the compressed air consumption is reduced by up to 50%. Therefore the RoTac3 has been granted the e-save label for particularly energy-efficient and eco-friendly technologies. This principle enables the RoTac to generate tangle knots with defined distances and controllable strengths. Tangle dropouts are reduced and down streaming performance improved. A very gentle yarn treatment reduces the yarn tension. The resulting, better process stability is very beneficial for future trends such as fine deniers and demanding polymers. RoTac3 is immediately available for the BCF plant S+ and can be retrofitted in already existing S+ plants. Virtual Reality Show for main exhibition subjects: S+ und Sytec One Furthermore Oerlikon Neumag also showed their BCF product portfolio: S+ and Sytec One, at the Domotex 2015. The three-end S+ produces high-quality BCF yarns and serves a very wide titer range (600 to 4000 dtex). All polymers, from polyester to polypropylene up to polyamide 6, can be processed on these multi-polymer plants without conversions being necessary, whereby the machine utilizes the applied raw material to 99%. VarioFil R+ reduces spinning process for one step PET has become the primary material for beverage packaging, billions of PET bottles are used worldwide each year. This huge quantity of PET bottles, usually disposed as waste after initial use, is a perfect source of raw material for the sustainable production of synthetic fibers. Furthermore, the reutilization of resources and raw materials, along with energy saving production processes, are becoming increasingly popular. The VarioFil® R+ concept combines all these trends. It uses PET bottle flakes as a raw material, which avoids the additional pelletizing of bottle flakes into rPET chips. This leads to a significant advantage in terms of investment and energy costs. It also provides the latest technology for dope-dyeing, which is the most resource-saving dyeing process. Hence, the development of VarioFil® R+ underlines the trend of increasing demand for textiles made from yarns which have a ‘sustainable background’. It also provides the possibility for recycling companies to sell high-quality yarns instead of bottle flakes, therefore generating added value. Downstream with Oerlikon Barmag’s eAFK texturing machine proves yarn quality Further Open House attractions were the live presentation of the texturizing process, converting the manufactured rPOY into DTY on Oerlikon Barmag’s eAFK texturizing machine, as well as BBE’s brand-new cleaning system for melt filters, known as White Filter Cleaning WFC. WFC allows the cleaning of melt filters, but also of other melt-contaminated parts without any chemical solvents and is a good complementary system for the VarioFil R+ line to clean its filtration equipment. A virtual tour through the new VarioFil® R+ line as well as an impressive insight into the winder assembly department of Oerlikon Barmag, the origin of the famous WINGS POY winder, and several technical presentations covering the fields of recycling, yarn production from recycled feedstock and dope-dyeing all made the Open House an informative day for all participants. BB Engineering GmbH (BBE) is a joint-venture between the world’s largest manufacturer of manmade fiber equipment, Oerlikon Manmade Fibers / Oerlikon Barmag, located in Remscheid, Germany, and the market leader in film stretching lines, Brückner Group, located in Siegsdorf, Germany. BBE provides extrusion equipment such as extruders and melt filtration systems and the VarioFil turnkey spinning lines for the flexible production of POY, FDY and IDY yarns.

Contract furnishing fabrics specialist, Tavelmo Movelta’s, replacement Montex stenter increases speed of production and provides improved quality at its Belgian finishing operation. Consolidating its two business operations, Belgium’s contract furnishing fabrics specialist, Tavelmo Movelta, replaced its two stenters with a single Monforts Montex stenter; ensuring faster production speeds and improved quality; ordered through local Monforts representative Le Clair & Meert. “Advanced finishing is at the heart of everything we do here,” said Frans Hellyn, owner of the highly successful Tavelmo Movelta Group, one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of contract furnishing fabrics, “and the Monforts Montex stenter is at the heart of our finishing operations.” Two previously separate businesses within the group have been consolidated at a state-

of-the-art, integrated weaving and finishing plant in Nijverheidslaan, between the Belgian cities of Lille and Ghent. Both yarn and piece dyeing are carried out at a separate plant in nearby Sint-Niklaas. The Movelta brand has been well known for many years for its ranges of woven velvets, while the Tavelmo name is equally renowned for flat wovens and cheniles. Home textiles for sofas, curtains and bedding are exported to more than 60 countries and the group also supplies materials extensively to manufacturers of caravans and mobile homes, boats and outdoor furniture. With the merging of the two operations at the Nijverheidslaan plant, a six chamber Montex stenter with a working width of 1.8 m has been installed to replace two older machines. “It does the jobs both were previously handling much faster and with much better uniform quality results,” said Mr Hellyn. “Everything we produce here goes through the stenter at least once, and often twice. If we mercerise the fabrics, they then go through the stenter again, and if we coat or print them, stentering also follows.” He added that a conscious decision was made to focus on added-value wet and dry finishing operations and to invest in the best machines available for each process.

cy and even chlorine resistance for the marine market have to be accurately applied and their effectiveness guaranteed. Specific products within the company’s vast range demand especially sensitive handling, such as polypropylene-based outdoor fabrics where precise temperature control is essential, or the latex back-coating of caravan fabrics. In the treatment of face-to-face velvets, meanwhile, the even backing applied on the Montex stenter is essential for achieving accurate pile anchorage. “We are lucky to have a highly-experienced team here who can get the most out of the machines,” Mr Hellyn said.
the discolouration is perfect.” Another new development which is attracting a lot of interest – and is also particularly demanding on the company’s technicians and the stenter - is the new Easy Clean finish, developed in collaboration with a chemicals supplier. With Easy Clean, stains on furnishing fabrics including ink, tomato sauce and red wine can be easily removed with water and unlike other treatments, its effectiveness is permanent. “The difference,” Mr Hellyn observes, “is that we are embedding the coating deep within the fibres of the fabrics, which took a lot of research and development work to achieve.”
New developments Tavelmo Movelta received the 2014 Blue Drop Award at the MOOD (Meet Only Original Designs) trade fair held in Brussels, for its development of a special velvet quality, based on bamboo polyester. “The company succeeded in creating a kind of pelt, similar to fur,” said MOOD trends co-ordinator Niek De Prest of the development. “The ultimate softness obtained with the naturally antibacterial bamboo fibre is unrivalled and even
Third generation Tavelmo Movelta was founded in 1948 by Mr Hellyn’s father. Today his son Olivier and daughter Charlotte run the business with him as the family-owned firm looks towards its third generation success. “It’s not possible today to compete as purely a weaver of fabrics,” he concluded. “We are running against the wind in producing in Europe, which is why we have to specialise and have made heavy investments in our finishing equipment.”

RECENT PRICE MOVEMENT Global cotton prices were mostly stable over the past month, with NY futures, the A Index, and the CC Index virtually unchanged. Indian prices moved slightly lower; Pakistani prices moved slightly higher. • Prices for the March New York futures contract were largely unchanged. Despite testing levels above 61 cents/lb during holiday trading, values returned to the range between 58 and 61 cents/ lb that they had been in since early November. • The A Index has been steady at levels between 67 and 70 cents/lb. • After falling throughout November, the CC Index was stable in December. In international terms, values for Chinese cash prices held near 100 cents/lb. In local terms, the CC Index declined marginally, dropping from 13,900 RMB/ ton to 13,600 RMB/ton. • Prices for the most-actively traded May contract in China’s ZCE futures market increased slightly over the past month (from 95 to 97 cents/lb or from 12,900 to 13,100 RMB/ton), but continue to predict a slight decline in Chinese prices in coming months. • Indian spot prices for the Shankar-6 variety drifted slightly lower in local terms, falling from 33,100 INR/candy in early December to 31,900 INR/candy in early January. In international terms, values decreased from 68 to 65 cents/lb. • Pakistani spot prices increased from 56 to 59 cents/lb in international terms and from 4,650 to 4,900 PKR/maund in local terms last month. SUPPLY, DEMAND, & TRADE There were few large revisions in this month’s USDA report. At the world-level, the production estimate increased by 189,000 bales to 119.2 million and the consumption estimate decreased by 365,000 bales to 112.2 million. The combination of a larger harvest projection and a lower forecast for mill-use generated a 559,000 addition to the global ending stocks figure. At its current level, world stocks are expected to reach 108.6 million bales at the conclusion of the 2014/15 crop year. This volume is only slightly

below projected mill-use (3.6 million bale difference). Correspondingly, the stocks-to-use ratio is estimated to be nearly 100% (96.7%) and climb to a level more than double the average throughout the modern era (47.6% between 1960/61 and 2013/14). At the country-level, the most significant revisions to production figures were for India (-500,000 bales to 30.5 million), Tanzania (+100,000 to 400,000), the U.S. (+161,000 to 16.1 million), and Pakistan (+400,000 to 10.2 million). The only notable revision to country-level mill-use figures was for China (-500,000 to 36.5 million). In terms of trade estimates, there were changes for Pakistani imports (-400,000 to 1.0 million), Indian exports (-300,000 bales to 4.7 million), and Tanzanian exports (+100,000 to 275,000).

PRICE OUTLOOK While harvesting is nearing completion in most northern hemisphere cotton-producing countries, supply-related focus is shifting to planting for the 2015/16 crop year. The National Cotton Council’s survey of U.S. cotton producers is underway. Results that will be released February 7th could be expected to predict a decline in acreage for the 2015/16 season. In terms of production, a decline in U.S. plantings may be partially offset by improved growing conditions in West Texas. Rainfall in the region was higher than average during the 2014 calendar year, and if rain continues to fall in 2015, lower abandonment rates and higher yields could be possible in that part of the cotton belt. The USDA will release a preliminary set of estimates for 2015/16 supply, demand, and trade on February 20th. An early forecast from Beijing Cotton Outlook suggests that Chinese cotton acreage could drop 15% next season, with much of the decline occurring outside of Xinjiang province and in the areas where government support has diminished. Such a decline in Chinese acreage should solidify India’s position as the world’s largest cotton producer. Due to yields below the world average, India was only recently able to surpass China in production despite consistently being home to the world’s largest cotton area. India was able to increase yields significantly in the 2000s with the adoption of seed technologies. Even though the time period following the improvement in yield included years when cotton prices were less competitive, there has not been a single significant year-over-year decline in Indian acreage since then. Instead, Indian acreage was either flat or moved higher. The trend has been definitively upward. India’s acreage in 2014/15 was more than 50% higher than the average in the early 2000s. In the current environment of lower prices, an important question for the global supply situation next crop year is whether India will decrease its acreage for 2015/16. The importance of this question relates to India’s position as the world’s second largest exporter. For the past several crop years, stocks in exporting countries have been held at relatively tight levels due to the increase in Chinese import demand that accompanied aggressive purchasing by China’s reserve system. Chinese reforms, and their increased emphasis on the use of domestic supplies, are expected to reduce global import demand for the next several years. Consequences are already being felt in the current season, with stocks in many exporting countries projected to increase. Lower acreage and production in 2015/16 may inhibit further increases in stocks in certain exporting countries next crop year. Since India’s acreage has only been flat or higher in recent years, India may prove an exception. Given limited Indian warehousing capabilities, the more Indian cotton that is produced and in search of buyers, the greater the downward pressure there may be on both Indian and world prices.
