POST Greenland’s 2014 Stamp Programme by Per Svendsen, Managing Director
Ukiortaami pilluaritsi. Happy New Year! I am happy to present the 24 stamps that POST Greenland will issue in 2014. As always, the stamps are split into three yearly subscription despatches in January, June and October. However, in March we shall also issue two Norden stamps that will be included with the subscription despatch in June. 20th January: Regional Greenlandic Songs, Sepac, EUROPA, Additional Value and Mining. An entirely new series of Greenlandic stamps starts in 2014. Camilla Nielsen has painted two beautiful and characteristic landscapes inspired by regional Greenlandic songs. The series commences with songs and designs from Eastern Greenland and Southern Greenland. The stamps will be issued in complete sheets. The Sepac-stamp from POST Greenland depicts a photo taken by photographer John Rasmussen. The joint Sepac-theme in 2014 is “Flowers”. As always the stamp can be purchased in the joint Sepac souvenir folder “Beautiful Corners of Europe”. Although the stamp is issued in January the souvenir folder will not be issued until October. This is due to the other Sepac countries issuing their respective stamps on alternative dates during 2014. The EUROPA series in 2014 will be issued with the theme ”National Musical Instruments”. The artist Frederik “Kunngi” Kristensen has created both designs for POST Greenland’s contribution to the series. As is our tradition, the Greenlandic EUROPA-stamps will be issued in a complete sheet, mini sheets and in a self-adhesive stamp booklet. The additional value stamp of the year will be issued in support of the homeless in Nuuk. The stamp will be drawn by Niels “Mo” Motzfeldt and issued in complete sheets and also a beautiful souvenir sheet. The January issues are completed with two stamps in the series about the history of Greenlandic mining again with impressive designs created by Ina Rosing. This is the fifth installment in the mining series. As in

the last four years, the mining-stamps will only be issued as self-adhesive stamps.

17th March: The Norden-Issue 2014. The joint Nordic series “Life by the Sea” will be ended in 2014 with new stamps from each of the eight Nordic post services. The Theme this time is “Life at Sea – Ships at Sea”. Miki Jacobsen has created the designs for the final two POST Greenland stamps in the series. The stamps will be issued as complete sheets and also in a souvenir sheet. 11th June: Contemporary Greenlandic Art, Greenlandic Agriculture, 80th birthday of Prince Henrik. The June stamp issues start off with three stamps in the series “Contemporary Greenlandic Art”. Young talents, Sissi Møller, Lisa Kreutzmann and Isak Brandt are the artists who have created the three designs. As always, these art-stamps will be issued in both complete sheets and also in a beautiful souvenir folder. The attractive series about modern Greenlandic agriculture offers two new designs from the scenic and lush Southern Greenland. Both stamps will be issued in complete sheets. The June stamp issues end with a joint issue with POST Danmark and Posta Faroe Islands. 2014 sees the 80th birthday of the prince consort, which will be marked on a stamp from each post service in the Royal Union. The stamp will be issued in a complete sheet, souvenir sheet and also a joint souvenir folder. 20th October: Hunter’s life, Greenlandic Aviation, Joint Issue with New Zealand, Greenlandic Expeditions – and Christmas in Greenland. The last stamp issues in 2014 commence with two stamps in a new series that pay homage to the importance of hunting for the Greenlandic culture and identity. Ivalo Abelsen has painted the first two designs in the series, which will end in 2015. Both stamps will be issued in normal complete sheets. One new stamp in the series “Greenlandic Aviation” will be issued on the same day. Once again the avi-
ation designs have been created by the legendary engraver Martin Mörck. The stamp will be issued in complete sheets. Jointly with New Zealand Post, we shall issue a stamp in complete sheets and a souvenir sheet. The souvenir sheet from both post services may also be purchased in a beautiful souvenir folder with the theme “From Pole to Pole”. Martin Mörck has also drawn and engraved the twelfth and last part of the series about important Greenlandic expeditions. Danish Ludvig Mylius-Erichsen’s leadership and participation in the fabled Danish Expedition 1906-1908 is honored on these stamps, which will be issued in both complete sheets and a souvenir sheet. As is our tradition, two Greenlandic Christmas stamps will be issued as both stamps on gummed paper and in a self-adhesive booklet. Lisbeth Karline is the lady artist who has created the Christmas stamp-images that celebrate the popular televised Christmas transmission: “Christmas Greetings from Greenland”. Finally the 2014 stamp year is closed with the year pack, in which all the Greenlandic stamps and souvenir sheets are included. May you enjoy the stamps in 2014.

able to increase the virility of men, prevent premature ejaculation and increase the sex drive of both sexes. The positive effects are attributed to a high content of Phenol, which probably activates the metabolism and works as an antioxidant.
It has traditionally been used as a medical plant in Iceland, France, Russia and Greece and it is mentioned as early as the first century A.D. by Dioscorides. Rhodiola has also been used in traditional Chinese medicine, where it is called Hong jǐng tian.
The root of the Rhodiola also contains a group of formerly unknown components that are not found in other plants. These include resin, rosavin and rosarin. Each of these has been investigated and it seems they are an important contribution to the excellent anti-stress capabilities of the plant.
In Greenland, Rhodiola is primarily used as both a spice and in salads. The leaves are used as salad and spinach, the stem is eaten as asparagus and the root is eaten raw or boiled. The dried roots smell of roses and are said to keep away moths and other harmful insects. Rhodiola is said to have a number of positive effects. For instance, it is said that the substances in the plant can help with stress, depression, fatigue, headache, cholesterol, help failing concentration and even lead to weight loss. Furthermore the plant is said to be

The picture on the stamp shows Rhodiola with half ripe seed capsules. When the flower itself withers the seeds appear. Initially they are greenish, but later they become yellow-orange and the ripe seed capsules are deep red. The plant on the stamp was photographed on the southern end of the island Tuttutooq with Narsaq Bay in the background.

2014 EUROPA-Stamps – Musical Instruments By Frederik ’Kunngi’ Kristensen. Translated from Greenlandic by: Malînánguaq M. Mølgaard The Drum The sizes of the drums vary. The largest are more than one metre in diameter, for instance in Nunavut, Yukon and in the inner parts of the country. The smallest stem from the Thule region and are very light and not completely round but more oval in shape. It is either made from wood or bone, has a handle and as drumhead and either skin or the skin of a seals testicles is used. The handle is often decorated because it is believed the decorations protect the drum.
Violin and Accordion Before Hans Egede introduced Christianity, the people who came to the country were mostly whalers and they, without a doubt, played the music they liked the most such as song and dance music. For instruments they mainly used the violin, accordion, harmonica and wind instruments. From the book: Nipilersorninngoortaraaq Atuagaq 3, Sixteen Nordstrøm & Per Rosing
…The drum of the East Greenlanders can be seen as something important and, when it was made by the father or grandfather of the owner, it is said to possess a special power. The growth rings on the drum must be straight and alike and there cannot be cams in it, as alien spirits might settle there. It was told that if the handle was touched by a stranger the spirit would be stolen. On the other hand it could be lent out as transportation of the drum, for instance from settlement to settlement, could be difficult and time consuming. From the book: ”Dit lysende indres stemme” in Inuit written by Ole Jørgensen.
About the Artist Frederik „Kunngi“ Kristensen (b. 1952) Kunngi’s works range from naturalistic depictions to abstract and non-figurative compositions, often with the square as a central element. In 1974 Frederick „Kunngi“ Kristensen, was one of the first students in Graphic workshop, the forerunner to the art school in Nuuk. In the Danish art context Kunngi, a.k.a. Frederick Kristensen, is a blank chapter. In Greenland, he is king! A name that has stuck to him since his birth, when King Frederik IX visited Greenland and took the baby boy in his arms.

Together we will make a better life for the homeless
ELSESDAG
In collaboration with the homeless, the association has many events including communal dinners, Christmas get-togethers and boat trips to experience Geenland’s nature.
GIV
It is a fact that many homeless have trouble with addictions – They are honest about this – but it takes a lot of will power to fight with the problems, when you also have no place to stay.
•
The association would like to create further focus on homelessness problems, make people aware of this social problem through events and remove the stigma that is felt by many homeless in the local communities.
FIA
It is a harsh experience to be homeless in Greenland. It is not just the cold winters, but also because the local community often has no appreciation for their situation. The homeless are often stigmatised as alcoholics, drug addicts or thieves.

By Allan Pertti Frandsen Homelessness is a social problem in Greenland too! Quite naturally, the problem is largest in Greenland’s capital Nuuk, where it is estimated that there are between 40-60 real homeless people. In Nuuk there are two organisations of volunteers who directly support the town’s homeless: Café Kialaarfik, which is also a hostel and the association NoINI. In addition, it should be mentioned that Café Manna, situated in the colonial harbour, arranges Christmas for the homeless of Nuuk every Christmas Eve.
Café Kialaarfik / Shelter
The homeless are the first to feel the cold. Protected from the snow, Hans Peter Ananiassen stands at the entrance to Brugsen and sells “Hus Forbi”. - I look forward to there being a new place for the homeless. It will be good for all of us, says Hans Peter Ananiassen, who is the spokesman for the homeless.
The hostel was opened in December 2007 and has in the past six years been the place for some of the town’s homeless. In April 2010 Café Kialaarfik opened and was connected to the hostel on Ceresvej close to the middle of Nuuk. Because of redevelopment, the building housing Café Kialaarfik and the hostel will be knocked down during 2014. Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq therefore plans to find a new place for the hostel and café for the homeless.
01106531 Souvenir Sheet: Additional Value, Homeless Value: DKK 44.00 Date of issue: 20th January 2014
However, the hostel lacks funding for more activities for the homeless. One of the most important functions of the hostel is for the homeless themselves to take part in the work in Kialaarfik. The keyword in Kialaarfik is: “Help to self-help”.
The additional value of DKK 1.00 for each additional value stamp sold will go, undivided, to the work of these mentioned organisations in support of the homeless.
At the same time, the hostel would like to participate in creating focus on the homeless problems in Nuuk and, through events, create awareness about this social problem.
With the issue of these stamps, POST Greenland hopes to increase awareness of the conditions of the homeless, so that they can be improved.

Finally, after almost 20 years standstill, it has been beneficial to Greenland that the new owners of the licence consider reopening the mine by re-establishing the cableway, which made underground mining possible from the beginning. The new owners have called themselves: Black Angel Mining A/S.

Nordmine continued for no less than 40 years until 1991, as it was decided to continue the mineral exploration in Eastern Greenland. Through its lifetime, the company sifted through the concession in Eastern Greenland in search of useful minerals. For instance a comprehensive search for the metal molybdenum in the nearby mountain called Malmbjerg was begun. However, this resource was not explored thoroughly until far later - around 2008 - by a Canadian mining company. The exploration continues after the acquisition in 2012 of the licence by a polish company.
’The Black Angel’ mine risked closure in 1986 due to low prices for zinc and limited reserves. However, Boliden Mineral AB took over Greenex A/S from Cominco and rationalised the operation, keeping the mine going until the ore had been extracted. Mining at the lead zinc mine ‘The Black Angel’ ended in 1990 after 17 years in operation, where most of the ore had been mined. When the mine closed it had produced lead, zinc and silver. In total 11.3 million tons of ore with an average grade of 12 % zinc, 4 % lead and 29 grammes of silver per ton had been extracted. Therefore, it was also a silver mine, from which no less than 325 tons of silver had been produced.
Q AT U L E R F
In 1963 the lead-zinc mine at Mestersvig was closed when the ore had been depleted. All in all, 545,000 tons of ore with an average content of 9 % lead and 10 % zinc had been mined, and the proceeds from the operation were just enough to pay the costs of the approximate 10 years that the mine had been active.

The Lead Mine at Mesters Vig The lead mine at Mesters Vig was opened at the mountain ‘Blyklippen’ (The lead cliff) in the autumn of 1952, due to findings made in 1948 by the geologist Lauge Koch. The concession was issued to the newly started Nordisk Mineselskab A/S (Normally known as Nordmine) for exploration for minerals in an area of 118,000 km2 for a period of 50 years in central Eastern Greenland. The concession was the first of its kind after the war that covered all minerals - and the state held 27.5 % of the stocks. However, the concession did not include Cryolite or radioactive elements. From the beginning, comprehensive work had to be done to build an entire town (‘Mestersvig’) and also a runway. The mining was underground in three levels at the site located a couple of kilometres from Mestersvig.
The Black Angel The lead-zinc mine ’The Black Angel’ at Maarmorilik started its ore production in 1973. At the start there had been a number of interest groups prospecting after the initial find in 1937. This find was made by an employee at the nearby marble quarry. Prospecting undertaken by a number of companies, with the Danish-Canadian prospector Niels Ægidius Andersen as the anchorman, led to clarification of the position and extent of the ore. In 1971-1972, calculations were made on the amount of ore connected to the structure of the mountain known as ‘Black Angel’ which is situated on the opposite side of the fjord. The mining area was placed 600 metres above sea level and access to the area was with a 1.7 km long cableway from the earlier marble quarry. The work force the first year consisted of 250 men. Operations were carried out by the company Greenex A/S, which had been established as early as 1964 with Cominco Ltd. as its main stockholder. The establishment of the mining town and cableway was created in only 15 months in those years, after which time the mine could be opened.
UL
In this fifth part of the Mining history on Greenlandic stamps, the activities are focused on the exploitation of the so called base metals – lead and zinc, which led to the two new issues.

About the artist: Born in Denmark 1965. Grew up in Greenland and Denmark. Ina Rosing is the artist who created the designs in the complete series of the mining stamps. Since her stamp debut in 1996, Ina has painted 26 stamps for POST Greenland. These two mining stamps will, therefore, be numbers 25 and 26. As an artist, Ina Rosing is heavily influenced by her childhood years and later time as a youth, which she spent in Greenland. Ina says: I always long for the open expanse and the strong feeling of being connected with the all-dominating arctic nature. When I paint this powerful feeling of connectedness combined with the colour and texture of the paint, is the prime element in my art.
Norden by the Sea III, ships Eventhough the common Nordic culture has changed through the centuries and the Nordic countries follow individual paths, some important common denominators remain, such as ships. Today, as in the past, the sea both separates and links the Nordic countries and continues to be important for the development and growth in areas such as the fishing and oil industries and for transport of passengers and cargo. We all benefit from the sea and the possibilities it offers us. The sea surrounding the Nordic countries is also a constant source of inspiration and recreation. In their free time many take to the sea to enjoy the tranquility, but also to be astonished by our occasionally harsh nature. Ships Unique to our harsh and vast country is the absence of a road system between our cities and villages. It means that a visit by a cargo ship from Royal Arctic Line or a passenger ship from Arctic Umiaq Line never goes unnoticed. Norden stamps, this year created by artist Miki Jacobsen, reflect not only the joy but also the curiosity of a ship’s arrival in the cold Arctic winter.
Since 2003, POST Greenland has had self-adhesive stamps in its product range, for instance the annual Christmas stamp booklet. However, while the Christmas stamps can be bought as traditional stamps with gum on the back, which need moisture before the stamps can be attached to the letters, the stamps of this series are different. They are only available as self-adhesive stamps. This is also the case with the two mining stamps G532 and G533, which will be issued on 20th January 2014. This initiative with two yearly stamps, which are only available in self-adhesive format, has been made to fill an increasing postal need for self-adhesive stamps in Greenland. The two stamp designs have been created by Ina Rosing who, once again, has been able to combine the historic and the modern in her artwork.

About the artist Miki Jacobsen was born in 1965. His art is often characterised with a powerful expression that takes the spectator back deep into Greenland’s cultural history. He is able to follow the mythical track and give it new life in his art, thus bridging the gap between past and present. The importance of the Greenlandic cultural heritage is transmitted by the artist to his art; his works often have a special aura of monumental timelessness. Meanwhile, his work is of particular importance for the Inuit self-understanding since Miki Jacobsen in his art raises the question: Where do we come from and who are we?

News from POST Greenland Great Success on the Stamp, Letter & Postcard Exhibition 2013 in Frederiksberg By Hjørdis Viberg
It was a great experience for us to participate in this exhibition, where our philatelic manager Allen Pertti Frandsen had the great honour of opening the exhibition, which also celebrated our 75th anniversary. We had brought all the issues from 2013 and some from 2011 and 2012 for the occasion. The stamps caused great enthusiasm and soon long rows of eager collectors, who wanted to buy the stamps, formed in front of our booth. The customers also had the opportunity to get the signature of the artist and engraver, as Bertil Skov Jørgensen visited the booth on both days of the exhibition. It was therefore two active days for us at the booth and it was a great joy to see the enthusiasm of the collectors for our unperforated anniversary souvenir sheet. We were very happy to be able to celebrate our anniversary with the collectors at the exhibition.
Greenlandic stamps for more than 100,000 Chinese By Pertti Frandsen
China is the market of the future even for stamps. Therefore POST Greenland came to Beijing, when the doors were opened to one of the world’s largest stamp and collection exhibtions “China International Collection Expo 2013”, which took place 26th to 29th September 2013. It was the fourth time that POST Greenland participated in a large international stamp exhibition in “the middle Kingdom” . We are happy to see that the Chinese continue to show great interest in the stamps from the world’s largest island. As in 2012, POST Greenland shared a booth with the seven other Nordic postal services. The booth drew in many interested Chinese collectors. Just before the exhibition closed, the Chinese organisers honoured the booth with a prize. China Post justified the prize by pointing out that the Nordic postal services had worked diligently together to create a large and beautiful booth, which was better than the average booth. The purpose for POST Greenland in participating in the exhibition in China is partly to create contacts for future joint stamp issues with other postal services as well as promoting the Greenlandic stamps to the Chinese collectors and also to evaluate possible sales channels in China. Therefore POST Greenland will be participating again the next time a large international stamp exhibition like this is held in China.
Corrections to the article about Carl Petersen In Greenland Collector No. 3, September 2013 we had an article about the Danish polar hero Johan Carl Christian Petersen. Unfortunately the article contained some errors: In the first line an ’A’ was missing in the name of the polar hero’s first name, so the name became ’John’ instead of ’Johan’. He did not come to Greenland in 1832 but in 1833. Furthermore he did not visit Upernavik in 1845 but in 1840 and the family did not go to Denmark in 1960 but in 1855. POST Greenland apologies for these errors.

Franking Labels
On 20th January 2014 POST Greenland will change its franking labels for the second time. In August 2009 POST Greenland issued the first Greenlandic franking labels. The second set from 2011 is therefore replaced now. The new designs which adorn the four franking labels have all been selected from beautiful Greenlandic scenery.
For You, the Collector
POST Greenland offers these new franking labels to our philatelic customers too. Four different franking labels are available however, only in set or multiple sets of four. You can order them mint and/ or cancelled, either first day cancelled (3913 Tasiilaq) or day cancelled (3913 Tasiilaq). You can also buy the four franking labels on a First Day Cover. Or you can buy four First Day Covers, each franked with the different franking labels. These FDCs will only be available until 6 months after the launch. All values between DKK 10.00 and DKK 100.00 are available. Note: Collectors’ orders for franking labels are produced on the office franking machine called “Frankie”, not in post-self-kiosks. Franking labels from the latter requires personal appearance and the use of a creditcard. Please also note that the franking labels are not part of our normal stamp programme. Therefore, they are not included in our Year Pack. However, you can take out a subscription for the franking labels. The franking labels cannot be ordered from the Greenlandic TELE-POST Centres (post offices). All orders for these franking labels are therefore to be sent to: POST Greenland, Filatelia, PO Box 121, 3913 Tasiilaq. Of course they can also be ordered online at www.stamps.gl.
