2011 Stamp programme from POST Greenland I am delighted to present POST Greenland’s stamp programme for 2011. Next year we shall issue 22 new stamps. This is 2 stamps more than in 2010. As has been customary since 2001, the Greenlandic stamps will be dispatched by subscription three times a year: in January, May and October. 17th January 2010: Communications in Greenland, Forests, Additional value and the artist association KIMIK The first 3 stamps issued in 2011 have the title ”Communications in Greenland”. Anne-Birthe Hove has interpreted the theme beautifully on three stamps which will be printed in offset. The three stamps each depict an era of communication in Greenland: Kayak Post, The newspaper AG’s 150-year anniversary and the submarine cable Greenland Connect. In addition to being issued in whole sheets, beautiful souvenir sheets will also be available. This year’s two Greenlandic stamps in the EUROPA series will be issued with the theme ”Forests”. Bodil ’Buuti’ Pedersen from the South Greenlandic town Qaqortoq has designed both Greenlandic EUROPA stamps. They will be issued in whole sheets, in miniature sheets of 8 identical stamps and also in a self-adhesive booklet with 2 x 6 identical stamps. Next year’s Greenlandic additional value stamp will be sold for the benefit of the artists’ association KIMIK. The stamp was designed by Ivalo Abelsen. This will be Ivalo`s second stamp for POST Greenland and it will be issued in whole sheets and also in a souvenir sheet of 4 stamps. Rowan berries and mountain cranberries adorn the two stamps that represent the beginning of a new series designed by Nina Spore Kreutzmann. The series ”Greenlandic herbs” will continue over the next three years in which a total of six stamps will be issued featuring delicious local herbs. The stamps will be available in whole sheets but there will also be a nice recipe booklet featuring the two types of berries. On 2nd May 2011 four new franking labels will be issued. Just as the first ones from 2009, the stamps will be self-adhesive in format. The four new franking labels will be issued along with a new first-day cover with a first-day cancellation. The franking labels and first-day cover will be included in the subscription dispatch of 9th May along with the stamps now described: 9th May: New definitive series, Aviation series, Comics and Contemporary Art. The current definitive series which began back in 2000 with the portrait of Queen Margrethe, will be replaced on 9th May 2011 with a new definitive series, also depicting the portrait of her Majesty the Queen.

GREENLAND COLLECTOR

The new stamp portrait has been drawn and engraved by the Norwegian artist Martin Mörck. The photograph used in the new stamp series has been taken by the Royal Court photographer Steen Brogaard. The Greenlandic civil aviation history from 1960 until today is the title of a new stamp series. The series has also been designed and engraved by Martin Mörck and will include a total of 12 stamps with designs of the aircraft that have been used in civil aviation in Greenland. The stamps will be issued in normal sheets and will, in future years, be completed with a beautiful and exciting book about the Greenlandic civil aviation history. The Greenlandic legend about Kaassassuk (The Orphan) was published as a comic a few years ago. It was designed by the young Christian Fleischer Rex from Nuuk. This stamp featuring Kaassassuk will represent the third and last part of POST Greenland’s stamp series on Greenlandic comics. As with the previous two cartoon stamps from 2009 and 2010, this new stamp will also be published in whole sheets and as a beautiful souvenir sheet. This will be Christian Fleischer Rex’s first stamp for POST Greenland. The subscription dispatch of 9th May is rounded off with three new stamps in the series ”Contemporary Art.” They will reproduce three very different works of art, respectively, by Julie Edel Hardenberg, Naja Rosing-Asvid and Anne-Lise Løvstrøm. The stamps will be issued in whole sheets and also in a souvenir folder entitled ”Contemporary Art V”. 28th July: Expeditions IX This issue includes one stamp, produced also in whole sheets and as a beautiful souvenir sheet. This is the ninth issue in the series ”Greenland Expeditions.” Once again, it is Martin Mörck, who has designed the stamp. In 1978 Naomi Uemura, a native of Japan, undertook a perilous crossing of the ice sheet from north to south. The stamp and souvenir sheet will be issued on the opening day of the Japan World Stamp Exhibition 2011 “PHILANIPPON 2011” in Yokohama. The stamp and souvenir sheet will be dispatched, however, as part of the subscription on 17th October.

Small European Postal Services will each issue a stamp with the title ”Scenery”. POST Greenland’s choice fell upon a beautiful photograph of an icy landscape from northern Greenland. Latvian-born Ivars Silis from Qaqortoq took the photograph. He, hereby, has his stamp debut. The stamp will be issued in whole sheets and will also be contained within a souvenir folder together with all 12 SEPAC stamps from 2011. The stamps and the souvenir folder will be shipped to our standing order customers on 17th October. 17th October: Mining II, 2011 Christmas Stamps and the 2011 Year Pack On this date, the next two stamps in the series ”Greenland’s mining” Will be released. The series is continued with two new self-adhesive stamps issued in whole sheet format. Again featuring designs by Ina Rosing who, once again, has managed to get the historical and the modern to meld together into a higher artistic unity. It is Camilla Nielsen, who has designed the two Greenlandic 2011 Christmas stamps. Camilla Nielsen was born in Denmark but has been living in Nuuk for years. The 2011 Christmas stamps will be issued, as always, in whole sheets and also as a self-adhesive stamp booklet with 2 x 6 stamps. The 2011 Year Pack with all the years 22 stamps and 4 souvenir sheets will complete the year. The new postage rate table for 2011 can be downloaded in PDF format on www.stamps.gl. Have fun with Greenlandic stamps. We look forward to sharing them with you. Best regards, Per Svendsen, Managing Director

The Additional Value stamp prize in 2011 goes to KIMIK - The Association of Artists in Greenland On 26th April 1995 the Greenland artist association was formed. Initially under the name KNEK which, later, was changed to KIMIK. The association of artists perform essential work as a focal point for Greenlandic art. POST Greenland is proud that the additional value stamp prize 2011 goes to KIMIK.

The Chair of KIMIK, Bodil ’Buuti’ Pedersen, is an artist whose name many of our collectors and readers will recognise as she, amongst others, has designed a number of highly acclaimed and well known stamps; she has sent us her comments:

KIMIK By Buuti Pedersen, Chair

KIMIK means ”force” in Greenlandic. It is an indication that we shall have strength and be strong in our expressions as Greenlandic artists. The artist association was formed 15 years ago, with the aim to strengthen the cooperation and unity amongst Greenlandic artists for mutual pleasure, inspiration domestically and to show the world that here is an exciting and viable culture that has much to offer.

The purpose of the association is to defend the members’ professional, economic, legal and social interests, not least to get artists to come together jointly to safeguard their common interests and be visible and, thus, influence development. When you live dispersed in a large country with an area as large as from Norway to northern Africa and which is only populated by approximately 55,000 people, the type of community network that KIMIK offers is important. Thanks to modern communications, we can be in contact regularly with each other and exchange views on our working conditions and tasks. KIMIK, which today consists of 20 artists with ages spanning over approximately 40 years, has gradually found its place in the cultural life within Greenland. The annual joint exhibition is a welcome opportunity for the individual artists to meet up and present their current work and, in a globalised world, the cohesiveness and community spirit that KIMIK offers is very important.

01106461 Souvenir Sheet, Additional Value 2011 KIMIK Value: DKK 32.00

The members of KIMIK are, as mentioned, scattered across the entire country with the majority of the artists living in Nuuk. Here, there is a joint workshop which many enjoy. We work closely together with the Nordic artists with whom we feel a community spirit and we are working together to expand the cooperation. But it is a project that takes time to develop and the work needs care in order to create new exciting projects together. KIMIK has for years enjoyed a close cooperation with POST Greenland, where many members have had the pleasure to create some of the beautiful stamp designs that characterise POST Greenland much to the delight of collectors worldwide. To become a member of KIMIK a solid artistic education is required. A list of individual members is available at the association’s website www.kimikart. com.

Communications in Greenland By Pertti Frandsen Photo: John Rasmussen, Narsaq Foto

The first 3 stamps in 2011 will be issued under the heading ”Communications in Greenland”. Anne-Birthe Hove has beautifully interpreted the theme into three stamps, which will be printed in offset and issued in whole sheets. The three stamps will each depict their own era of communication in Greenland.

Kay mail was the common way to transport mail in the old days – this was, of course, as a supplement the dog sledge transport. The kay mail letters were folded in a certain way so that they would fit into a kamik, the traditional Greenlandic boot. A few of the kay mail letters, back from the 17th and 18th centuries, are preserved in private collections today. During the 1950s and 60s, as motor boats were more common in Greenland, the need for kay mail disappeared gradually. In 1994, POST Greenland printed a modern day kay mail letter which was very popular. The last of these reprints were sold at POST Greenland’s booth during the fair “Frimærkeforum” in Roskilde in November 2010. In 1861, the newspaper Atuagagdliutit, was found ed. The Danish geologist, Inspector H.J. Rink started the newspaper in Nuuk. H.J. Rink believed that the population of Greenland was losing its cultural identity. The newspaper Atuagagdliutit was,

GREENLAND COLLECTOR

from its conception only printed in the Greenlandic language. During the Second World War there was also printed a Danish-language newspaper in Nuuk with the name “Grønlandsposten”. In 1952 Atuagagdliutit and Grønlandsposten were merged into a single two-language newspaper. In everyday language the newspaper is therefore called ”AG”. On 1st January 2010 AG’s corporate fund merged with the fund for Sermitsiaq, the other contemporary bilingual Greenlandic newspaper. The two newspapers are published separately, respectively, on Wednesdays and Fridays. The newspapers have a combined headquarters in Nuuk. POST Greenland’s holding company, TELE Greenland A / S, established during the period 2006 – 2009,

the submarine cable Greenland Connect, which began operation on 23rd March 2009. For large parts of Greenland, the submarine cable enabled a much faster IT and telecommunications link in and out of Greenland than the previous satellites. With the submarine cable, large parts of Greenland were now connected to what is popularly known as broadband. The cable goes from Newfoundland in the west across Greenland, to Iceland in the east, from which the submarine cable is powered. All these stations only supply green energy. The submarine cable has improved communications between Greenland and the rest of the world considerably. The submarine cable Greenland Connect contributes significantly to fulfilling TELE Greenland’s vision ”Greenland in the centre of the world”. And the Greenlandic IT and telephone customers can consume with a clear ‘green’ conscience.

Green forests in Greenland By Kenneth Høegh, Master of Agriculture Greenland is usually a country that is not associated with tree growth but, instead, has low tundra vegetation, ice and snow ... But not all of Greenland is a part of the Arctic zone; in the southwest of Greenland there is a sub arctic area, a climate zone immediately below the arctic climate zone. The natural birch forests The mountain birch (Betula pubescens ssp. czerepanovii) is mainly prevalent in the country’s southernmost municipality Kujalleq in protected valleys in the inner fjord areas. Farther north, up to about Paamiut, they are also present although not as small trees as one would see further south. The primary birch scrub forest areas are found in Tasermiut fjord, the Vatnahverfi area between Igaliku and Alluitsoq fjords, in the hinterland behind Igaliku village and in the inner Tunnuliarfik inlet. The Greenlandic mountain ash (Sorbus groenlandica) is to be found here in the scrub. Notwithstanding its name, the Greenlandic mountain ash has, moreover, its main area of growth in the North American coniferous forests of Labrador and Newfoundland. The tallest trees are found in Tasermiut fjord, with tall tress up to 10 metres high but, also around Qorlortorsuaq and Jespersens Dal behind Igaliku fjord, some tall trees can be found. The mountain birch are to be found all across the municipality Kujalleq except near the outer coast and highlands, mostly as shrubs measuring between half and one and a half metres in height, though sometimes quite flat to the ground. For example, at the town of Qaqortoq the mountain birch is mostly prevalent as shrubs growing to a height of one metre or slightly more, on sheltered south-facing slopes. In the town there are planted mountain birch from Iceland and Scandinavia, which seem to grow higher than the local mountain birch. The Greenland birch scrub forests are at the westernmost outpost of the mountain birch forest, which stretches from northwest Siberia to South West Greenland. The mountain birch meets in southern Greenland, the North American dwarf birch, the resin birch (Betula glandulosa), and many of the birch types are hybrids between these two species. Yes, actually the birch scrub and scrub forests averages a swarm of crossings between the two birch species - and Southwest Greenland is the only place in the world where these two species meet - and this is why the Greenlandic mountain birch is genetically unique. For this reason also the Greenland mountain birch deviates GREENLAND COLLECTOR

somewhat in leaf shape from other region’s mountain birches and this hybridisation is expressed in a variety of Autumn colours in all shades between red and yellow. The plantations The trees depicted on the stamp with the denomination of DKK 10.00 are the oldest exotic trees in Greenland and have their origin from the Danish botanist Rosenvinge’s experiments with seeding in 1892, at Qinngua at bottom of Tunulliarfik fjord at Narsarsuaq. The trees sprouted the following year in 1893, so now they are 117 years old. The pines, which are Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) have their origin in all likelihood from northern Norway. Scots pine can be very old and they can be expected to grow for up to 300-500 years. The trees, which now are 5-6 metres high, have in recent years of milder climate undergone a renaissance, as to say they have been rejuvenated with a new peak. The reason lies, to better climatic conditions in the past 15 years, but also to the nearby younger, but higher, larch forests which provide good shelter from the Foehn winds The future The milder climate we are experiencing these days will allow for more tree growth in southwest Greenland, and there have been planted some trees in the southern towns Qaqortoq and Narsaq and by sheep farms and in Narsarsuaq. It is, primarily, the feltleaf arrow (Salix alaxensis) and black cottonwood (Populus balsamifera ssp. trichocarpa) that you see in sheltered spots, especially the black cottonwood which evolves into beautiful trees. Yes, the trees in Greenland have a future with good growth... For an extended version of Kenneth Høegh’s report, please log on to www.stamps.gl.

Greenlandic Herbs on Stamps Over the next three years a total of six stamps will be issued in this series. All stamps are created by Nina Spore Kreutzmann who, among other things, also drew the designs for our Edible Fungi series 2004 – 2005. Greenland Mountain Ash and Arctic Mountain Cranberries adorn the first two stamps in this new series. These are two very tasty berries, which have for centuries been part of the Greenlandic cuisine. The stamps come in normal sheets – and in a beautiful souvenir folder with recipes for dishes including the two types of berries. By Anne Sofie Hardenberg Greenland Mountain Ash can grow in particularly favorable areas to a small tree height of 3 - 4 metres. But, usually, it is a small shrub with several ascending branches. berrylike fruits are eaten by birds, which spread the seeds. In the warm inland areas from Cape Farewell to Paamiut (Frederikshaab) the mountain ash grows amongst willow scrub and brush. The fruits are sour but suitable for jams, jellies and baked foods. Arctic Mountain Cranberries are a subspecies of mountain cranberries, which grow wild in Arctic North America and Greenland. The shrub grows up to 15 cms tall and has sour, red, edible berries. It can be grown in acidophil soil at a not too wet planting site. The plant can be found in western and southern Greenland where it is common in heaths and marshes between Nuuk Fjord and Disko Bay. But, otherwise, it is rare. Harvest time for mountain cranberries is between August and early Octo-

ber. The plant has been known for thousands of years, but it is rarely grown nowadays. Recipes for tasty dishes with Greenland Mountain Ash and Arctic Mountain Cranberries are available in the souvenir folder “Greenlandic Herbs I”. The recipes were written by Anne Sofie Hardenberg, born 1948. As an ’ambassador’ for Greenlandic cuisine, Annso, as she is nicknamed, is an avid writer and lecturer on the Greenlandic cuisine - both traditional and innovative. Annso has, among other titles, published the cookbook ”Igaassat - Recipes” in order to promote knowledge of Greenlandic cuisine. In 2008 the book won third prize in the prestigious competition ”Gourmand Awards” in London.

This year’s stamp exhibition, ”Frimærkeforum ’10”, was held in ”Roskilde Hallerne” in the city of the kings, Roskilde. Again this year, it was lovely to see so many happy people who showed up when the exhibition was opened at 10am on Friday 5th November by the mayor and the Postal orchestra. During the weekend the visitor count reached 3,050 philatelists and curious visitors. Once again there was a lively rush on POST Greenland’s exhibition stand by happy people who came both to buy Greenlandic stamps and to say ‘hello’ to our Greenlandic artists Ina Rosing, Nuka Godtfredsen and Thue Christiansen who told them about their exciting work creating the subjects for the Greenlandic stamps. Furthermore we had the pleasure of an authentic Greenlandic drum dance by Jens Davidsen every. During the exhibition, Administration & Logistics Manager, Dennis Fromberg revealed POST Greenland’s stamp programme 2011, showing many exciting and beautiful stamps.

Greenlandic stamps sought after at ”2010 Beijing International Stamp & Coin Expo” By Pertti Frandsen. Photo: Per Svendsen

GREENLAND COLLECTOR

Most industries and postal services around the world have their eyes on the ”Middle Kingdom”. This also applies to POST Greenland. And not without reason, since the Chinese currently are building one of the world’s strongest and fastest growing economies. In the past 30 years some 500 million Chinese people have been lifted out of poverty. This means that more Chinese today are able to afford to have a hobby, e.g. a stamp collection. And stamps are popular in China - very popular despite, or perhaps because of modern technology and all kinds of flashing electronic media. From 7th – 10th November 2010 POST Greenland had four very busy days at ”Beijing International Stamp & Coin Expo.” POST Greenland participated for the first time in this stamp and coin exhibition which takes place every two years in China’s capital.

We had the pleasure of sharing the exhibition arena with our colleagues from the postal services of Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Along with a handful of local sales assistants, the latter with good language skills in both English and Chinese, so we had our hands full, as the many thousands of Chinese collectors bought Greenland stamps. When the four exhibition days were finished, POST Greenland could delightedly report they were all sold out. And when the organizers closed the exhibition, the total number of visitors amounted to just over 100,000. An impressively high figure for a collector’s fair which does not have the status of an international exhibition. POST Greenland would like to thank the many thousands of visitors whom came to our exhibition arena in Beijing. See you soon! Huítóu Jian!
