TAKE HOME A PIECE OF

Wine Country

WITH KING BARREL OF OLD TOWN TEMECULA By Katrina McBreen Moses and Monique Briseño have been designing and building gorgeous furniture in Old Town Temecula for the past four years. But this husband and wife duo are not making your run of the mill home décor—all of their pieces are made from real wine and whiskey barrels. “Every single barrel is unique with its color and patina,” Monique adds, “We love that each piece is one of a kind.” After some experimentation with the strong, beautiful oak barrels, King Barrel started out making simple items such as planters and pet beds. Once they became more comfortable and familiar with the uniqueness of the material, and got a good team together, the possibilities became endless. From chairs and tables to light fixtures, bars, cabinets, and even fire pits—it is truly incredible the things that can be made from a repurposed wine barrel. To make your barrel décor even more special and unique, they can customize your piece by size and stain, and can even add engraving! Well-made and durable, every piece is handmade at heirloom quality—perfect to pass down to future generations. In addition to their residential customers, King Barrel has also sold their décor to well-known commercial clients such as Knott’s Berry Farm, California Pizza Kitchen, and various other restaurants and businesses across the country. If you are having a party or an event, ditch the generic plastic white chairs and tables, King Barrel can provide rental options for the optimal party décor. Living in wine country definitely has its perks. Bring a piece of wine country into your

A NOTE FROM THE

editor

Temecula Valley Vibe was started with the intention to bring an incredible community even closer together. We live in an amazing area with sensational wineries, delectable restaurants, killer nightlife, and strong local businesses. Temecula Valley is quickly becoming a mecca for good food, good drinks, good vibes—and most of all— good people. My hope for this magazine is that it holds a mirror up to our community. I would love nothing more than to showcase the bright and inspiring people who live in this city—along with the local businesses that thrive because of them. Combined with the latest in food, health, beauty, business, fitness, and family, I hope this is a magazine that you will want to read cover to cover. Happy Reading!

15TH ANNUAL TEMECULA WINE & MUSIC FESTIVAL By Kate Derr | Presented by Apaulo Productions The lovely Hawk Ranch was all a bustle on Saturday, May 25th as both jazz and wine-lovers gathered to revel in the festivities. The smooth sounds of local and international artists combined with the rustic atmosphere made for a perfect pair. Speaking of pairing--guests were able to taste an array of delectable wines from near and far. Among the wineries present at the event were impressive crafters like award-winning Riboli Family Wines. Originating in Los Angeles, their four generations of wine-making became apparent while savoring their flavorful reds. Serving natives since 2000, wine-enthusiasts turned wine makers, Falkner Winery, represented Temecula well with both deeply sultry and delicately sweet blends. Yet another master of vino who made an appearance during this event was Francis Ford Coppola Winery. This was a fan favorite indeed with flavors so decadent and fruitful, they defied the taste buds. Some of the other tastings were provided by local winery Wilson Creek, Murder Ridge, as well as exclusive bottles made for the event--sporting colorful, jazz and R&B inspired labels. Guests were also able to enjoy an ice-cold brew from Chihuahua Cervesa, eats from a few tasty food trucks, and a complimentary photo inside vehicle-turned-photobooth “The Pixel Bus. Local artisans displayed their goods for passers-by as well. From jewelry to cork art, there were plenty of bobbles for purchase. A personal favorite had to be Savor Gourmet Jerky. Who can resist a free sample, right? After the first taste, you are hooked. Residing in Temecula Valley, their tender and sumptuous flavors of turkey and brisket jerky were undeniably delicious. Guests were also invited to join a live and silent auction with all of the proceeds benefiting the Boys and Girls Club of Southwest County. After making a few rounds of tastings and shopping, locals posted up near the main stage. Oodles of talented musicians filled the venue with life and brought event-goers to their feet. Funky and fabulous sounds from artists like Pablo Cruise, Hiroshima, Patrice Rushen, and Barbara Morrison flowed through the entire crowd. Sax players Michael Paulo and special guest from Japan, Kanzaki, showed their seasoned talent as the duo riffed in perfect harmony. Many other fantastic artists took the stage during the festival to showcase their skills and keep the groove going into the evening. The Temecula Wine & Music Festival was an intimate event where guests could sip, eat, and enjoy exquisite entertainment. Local favorites presented themselves with a dash of flavor from around the world. It was a pleasant blend of heavenly wine, lush surroundings, and brilliant artistry. l

Toast the Glow!

Temecula Valley’s 36th Annual Balloon and Wine Festival By Katrina McBreen

Every year, people travel from near and far to celebrate two of Temecula Valley’s most famous attractions: our incredible wines and our magnificent hot air balloons. This year was no different. Lake Skinner recreation area was transformed to accommodate the thousands of visitors that flocked to the 36th Annual Temecula Valley Balloon and Wine Festival to take in the sights—and to take part in the good wine, good food, good music, and overall good vibes. Each day started out with an early morning hot air balloon launch, if fog permitted. Onlookers watched with awe as the giant balloons came to life with the roar and glow of the fire from

the

burners.

Festival

go-ers

were able to buy tickets for a balloon ride or a tethered ride in a balloon that took them about 60 feet in the air where they could hover over the early morning festival grounds to take in the sights. Over 20 local wineries were represented at the festival along with some of our favorite local breweries. With the purchase of drink tickets, guests of the festival were able to taste and sample their fill of wine and beer as they listened to amazing music coming from two different stages. Local—and traveling—vendors displayed their wares to the festival goers, from candles handmade from liquor and wine bottles to custom flower crowns, hats and clothing. The festival food court was an amalgamation of rich, decadent smells, and mouth-watering sights. Many local food trucks and restaurants were represented, as well as some classic festival favorites. The sweet smell of

10

Kettle Corn and bacon wrapped hot dogs permeated the air, while food vendors shouted food orders over the noise of the crowd. All the fair fan favorites were available, including churros, pulled pork sandwiches, deep fried everything, snow cones, nachos, and towers of crispy French fries. As the adults played in their playground of music, food, and wine, kiddos were able to have their own fun in the Watering Hole Game Zone. The most daring among them could choose to ride on the festival’s zipline for a bird’s eye view of the crowd or head to one of the three different bouncy houses—or take a roll around the ring inside a giant inflatable ball! Every

could take in a live animal show presented by Wild Wonders Hands-On Animal Education in the “Walk on the Wild Side” staging area. The two music stages were a revolving door of incredible musicians—including Shannon Rae & 100 Proof, Chase Bryant, and A Thousand Horses on Friday, 3 Doors Down, Soul Asylum, and Dishwalla on Saturday, and Coffey Anderson, Russel Dickerson, and Big & Rich rounding out the weekend on Sunday with a day full of country music. Music lovers of all genres had a great time as they danced and sang along to their favorite songs. As the sun started to set over the Lake Skinner Recreation Area, the hot air balloons made another appearance for the beloved Balloon Glow. The

sponsor Pechanga, Bimbo, Toyota, and others were inflated and filled the evening air with a gorgeous display of roaring burners that seemed to dance across the glowing balloons. With wine and beer glasses in hand, guests were able to “Toast the Glow” and show their gratitude for an incredible weekend of fun under the Temecula Valley sun. l

Loving Life in La Cresta

The

Behrens

Family

By Pax Ansley

“Temecula Valley is Southern California’s best kept secret. My family and I have lived here since 2005, and we absolutely love it”, Shelly Behrens explains to a happy couple--new to the area--looking for their dream home. Shelly is not your typical real estate agent. Her warm smile and big laugh will make anyone feel like they have known her for years. For the Behrens family of La Cresta, doing what they love--with the ones they love—has simply become a way of life, and they sure have fun doing it. Bill Behrens, originally from Palos Verdes, has always had a passion for tennis. The son of an actual rocket scientist, Bill inherited both his father’s intelligence and drive. He played professional tennis on the ATP tour for 8 years--during the era of legendary tennis pros Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi—and faced some of the greatest tennis pros the globe had to offer. In the height of his career, he was even ranked among the top 100 tennis players in the world. Shelly Hannah grew up in and around the Pacific Northwest. She spent time in Olympia, Vancouver, and Seattle before she gave up on the rain in the early 90’s and followed the sun down to idyllic Redondo Beach in Southern California. Shelly got started in finances and banking in her early California years and followed a natural progression from mortgage into real estate. She eventually developed an escrow division within her business, Team Home Sales, allowing her to control the escrow on her listings. One chilly day in February of 2001--on a blind date at a sushi joint set up by some friends--Shelly and Bill’s paths crossed

for the first time. Shelly says with a smile, “I remember seeing him for the first time. He was so good looking. I mean dropdead handsome.” There were eight other people on that night out on the town, but to Bill and Shelly, it was only the two of them. They laughed, talked, and danced for hours. Safe to say, they were hooked. They moved into a Redondo Beach pad together in the fall of the same year and were married in August of 2003. After years of playing tennis, Bill really found his niche in teaching. “He is one of the best coaches in the world, bar none,” his proud wife Shelly adds, “His talent to help kids progress at tennis is uncanny. His students absolutely rave about him.” When Bill’s Huntington Beach tennis academy closed, the couple decided it would be a perfect time to pick up roots and relocate.

MEMOIRS OF A By Vanessa Gibson

Stylist

In the 20 years I’ve been styling, I’ve been regularly questioned on a multitude of “What should I do, what shouldn’t I do with my hair, what products are the best for my texture, and can I really pull off this haircut?” And, of course, all of them are valid questions--but every single person‘s head is completely different! In fact, most times I see a regular client, their hair is going to have changed some since their last visit. Every slight variable, I’ll see it in those tresses. Depending on where they’ve been (tropical vacay--yup, sun brightens), what new products they’ve used, internal changes, fluxes in hormones, adding new medications--it will all filter out in your follicles. I strongly believe in listening and really hearing my client. It will make for a long lasting relationship in the chair and beyond. One thing I always ask before a service is, “What are you looking to achieve?” It’s super when a client walks in with a photo of a celebrity haircut or Pinterest pic of a color they'd adore to try. It’s a reference point for me where their head is headed. It’s important not to make any leaps too quickly in one direction or another. Cutters’ remorse is real! Although, it is fun to discuss a transition from one color to another, or options for a more extreme change. I am typically more on the more conservative edge when going for a new haircut. You can always take more off later but putting it back on can be quite a process. Something simple as adding some low darker blonde lights to a very pale blonde could be a huge difference--creating dimension and the appearance of a fuller head. There’s just so many options! With a fair amount of misinformation out there, people don’t always know what they need. Not every person’s ends demand a trim every six weeks, nor does every head need a daily wash, it just depends on you. I just want anyone seated in my chair to know-yes, you’re in good hands. Dreaming

Once you are seated for dinner, you will be able to peruse Wine Ranch’s incredible menu. From delectable starters and fresh, colorful salads, to tasty flatbreads, juicy burgers and fries, steaks, and seafood, Wine Ranch really does have something for everyone. We had the pleasure of dining here on a beautiful Friday night. Bustling, but not overly crowded, Wine Ranch has a very welcoming atmosphere. Owner Doug was there making the rounds, greeting regulars and meeting new guests— wine glass in hand, while his wife Debbie chatted with friends and guests at their stunning industrial concrete bar top. With such a charismatic and friendly duo behind this spot, there was no surprise that the vibe of their place says, “We are all friends here”. Walking up to the wine barrel host stand, you will immediately notice the gorgeous repurposed wine barrel light fixtures— made by Doug himself. We started with the incredible Maple Bacon Lettuce

Local Artist

Spotlight FROM MOSCOW TO TEMECULA— ART BY INNA PANKRATOVA By Pax Ansley Relatively new to the local art scene, Inna Pankratova—originally from Russia—moved to beautiful Temecula wine country in 2018. Her journey into the art world began in Moscow in 1999 when she was discovered by world renowned artist Ekaterina Grigoryeva. As her only student, Inna is honored to continue her legacy through her own work. She looks at her gorgeous canvases as a way to share her vision of the world using vibrant colors and unique textures. Inna reveals “Every one of my paintings reflects my feelings at a particular moment in time. For myself, painting is an escape. For my soul, it is an outlet to express both joy and grief. May my canvases bring to you happiness and joy.” Inna Pankratova artbyinna@hotmail.com | artbyinna.com

DAMN DIRTY APES…ARE DAMN DIRTY GOOD.

By Victorio Chachareebalo

I had the pleasure of seeing this electrifying rock-n-roll trio called Damn Dirty Apes at Luke’s on Front Street in Temecula. Every song they played, from Pink Floyd to Stone Temple Pilots, The Doors to Van Halen, was serious ear-candy. The primate triangle began in 2008 when Tim Santo (guitarist/lead singer) moved to Temecula where he met Chad Lashelle (drummer/singer). They jammed with a few local bass players but nothing clicked until they met Jeff Miller (bassist/backup singer) and the rest was history! Their onstage chemistry and live sound is overwhelmingly awesome. Being a guitar player myself, after watching Tim shred his Ibanez’s fret playground with utter ease, first thing I did when I got home was grab my guitar and work on scales. Their bassist Jeff has a very natural rockstar look and presence, which is a nice bonus to his impeccable bass playing. The most impressive element though, was Chad singing lead on a few songs while killing it on the drums, which was all carried with a vicious head bang. If anyone has ever tried to sing well and play drums at the same time, you no doubt know there aren’t many in the musical world that can do it. Phil Collins would’ve definitely given Chad a high five after watching him NAIL the vocals on “Roadhouse Blues” by The Doors. It’s simply pure, big-time talent. If you love rock music from the 60’s to the 90’s and beyond, they’re your band. Tim Santo 310-528-5047 | FB: damndirtyapesrock.
