SHAKESPEARE IN THE VINES’ PRODUCTION of MEASURE for MEASURE B Y:
KATRINA
McBREEN
Nestled among the vines of Baily Winery in Temecula Wine Country sits an intimate stage— perched gently above a combination of round-table ground seating and theater-style seating. Upon this stage, Shakespeare in the Vines’ theater company is making the words of the bard come to life all summer long. With three Shakespeare plays and one by the beloved Jane Austen in their repertoire, the summer season of this local troupe is packed with laughs, tears, and a whole lot of witty banter. We had the pleasure of attending SITV’s production of Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure. It was a beautifully crisp summer night under the stars in wine country, but we were able to keep warm and snuggled up with the use of complimentary blankets and a nice glass of rosé while we enjoyed the show.
Set in a hypothetical modern-day city—"overrun with sex and vice”, SITV’s understated set design combined practicality and subtleties to complement the story unfolding on stage without distracting from it. The cast did an incredible job of delivering the words of the famous playwright, while adapting the story to their modern setting— through body language and stage presence. Stand out performances include the playful and layered Duke Vincentio, portrayed by Raphael Berglas, and the emotive and passionate nun-in-training Isabella, played by Kailey Bosna. One of our favorite characters from the show— which offered the perfect comedic relief from a show with some pretty heavy topics—was the dim-witted and hilarious police officer, Elbow, portrayed by the talented Johnny Thunder. From the moment we walked up to the friendly box office, purchased our glass of wine, and took our seats, this was a theater experience unlike any other. Be sure not to miss the last show of the season, Shakespeare’s Comedy of Errors, playing September 5th-21st. F

Patients are often fearful of having a facelift. This is because of the unwanted “over pulled” appearance they see in patients. Dr. Newman performs a deep lift, which distributes the tension. This technique helps avoid these unnatural appearances. Facelifts generally take two to three hours to complete. Facelift recovery is rapid with minimal bruising and swelling. Swelling decreases by the third day. Patients can shampoo their hair in three days, wear makeup and take long walks by the fifth day. So don’t wait until you feel unhappy about your skin.

NOTE FROM THE
Editor This issue is all about Education, Enrichment, and Empowerment. Most of the time when you hear these words, you’ll think of school-age activities such as 6th period art class, baby gymnastics, high school band, or JV flag football. And while these are all fantastic options to aid in the development of young, fresh minds—this time, we want to focus on you—because, in our opinion, kiddos shouldn’t get to have all the fun. We are here to show you that for those of us over 18, there is a world of opportunity right here in Temecula Valley for enrichment and empowerment—and yes, even a little education. Having a hobby can change your life. If you can find something you love to do, you’ll have the opportunity to meet some incredible people, gain new skills, and develop passions that will last the rest of your life. Sometimes, we are so busy caring for those around us that we forget to care about ourselves. From young adults fresh out of school with a suddenly wide-open schedule, to first-time empty nesters looking for new purpose in life, we want to give you the tools to find the activity that lights your fire. In this issue, you’ll read about the incredible Temecula Valley native Sydnee Michaels, an LPGA golfer who didn’t let her career-threatening back injury rock her world. Instead, she rallied her strength and traded in her clubs

for a pageant crown—and is spreading her message of resilience and strength all the way to the Ms. America. Another strong Temecula Valley resident, Dr. Gloria Tumbaga, didn’t let her modest beginnings in the Hawaiian foster care system dictate her path. She used education and the empowerment she received from it as a tool to rise up out of her circumstances. Now she’s helping her patients in the Valley take control over their own lives in order to look and feel their best. We hope you’ll enjoy meeting our cover family, the Peltzers of Temecula Wine Country. They’ve been opening their home to residents and visitors of our Valley since 2004, and now they’ve opened their home to us. From their beginnings as Temecula’s favorite pumpkin farm to the thriving winery they are today, you’ll read their real story— at home with them beyond the vines. We’ve added a few new sections we just know you will love, including Temecula Valley Vine, a recurring section with a map of wine country alongside a more in depth look at one of our favorite wineries—Lorimar. Our newest mother-daughter chef team, Chow Bella, will be bringing you some incredible seasonal recipes, courtesy of our very own Temecula Olive Oil Company. Happy reading!

A fifth-generation farming family, the Peltzers have been farming in Southern California for over 100 years. In 1913, Charlie Peltzer’s great-great grandfather, Charles, moved his family from Kansas to Orange County— where they started their citrus farm in the sparsely populated city of Anaheim, California. After selling the plot to a business man named Walt Disney in 1954, the Peltzer farm would go down in history as a part of the land that would become “the Happiest Place on Earth”. However, this was not the end of Peltzer Farms--the family’s relocated citrus farm thrived. When Charlie’s dad, Charles I or Chuck, joined in the family business, they launched their first Pine Tree Farm in Orange County—which is still providing Southern California residents with a Christmas tree experience unlike any other. When Charlie and Carrie met in their early 20’s in Orange, California, the seeds of a brandnew kind of Peltzer farm began to grow. The pair quickly realized all the things they had in common—including a zest for life and a love of family. Charlie knew he wanted to follow in the footsteps of his hard-working farming family, so he decided to plant a pumpkin farm on one of the family’s pine farms in Orange. “We had a lot of fun together,” Carrie remembers, “We started our first pumpkin business in 1996 and got married in 1998 at my parents’ house.” Once their son, Charlie Jr. (Charles III) or “Jr.” as his family calls him, arrived on the scene in 2000, the pair knew they needed to find a home for their growing family and some land to call their own. Determined to find a place in Southern California where they could find the 25 acres they needed to continue their pumpkin business, the Peltzers journeyed southeast of their home
in Orange to the up-and-coming city of Temecula in 2002. The moment the family stepped onto the plot of land on Calle Contento in the rolling hills of Temecula’s young wine country, they knew that this was it. After purchasing the land and developing it for two years—on which they built a house and planted their pumpkins--the Peltzer family picked up their Orange County roots and made the move to Temecula in 2004. In that same year, Charlie Jr.’s brother Max was born, and the Peltzers of Temecula Wine Country were finally complete. Before the vines, Peltzer Pumpkin Farm operated as Temecula’s favorite pumpkin farm— with a wonderful community festival to celebrate the harvest every year—where they aim to invite families to join in on their favorite family traditions. By the time they opened their crush house years later, the Peltzer name was already very familiar to their Temecula Valley neighbors. With Carrie’s incredible eye for design and Charlie’s ability to “build anything”, the Peltzer Family Cellars became a gorgeous industrial farm-chic testament to the style and history of this talented couple and their proud family roots. Carrie, a gifted designer, has been in the design industry for almost 20 years. She has worked in the design of model homes and skilled nursing hospitals, but now that their winery is in full swing, Carrie plans to spend more time closer to home—working on the dream they are building as a family. “We have many fun things planned and I get very involved in the design and building. It’s my favorite part!”, Carrie reveals. Charlie is a farmer at heart, like his fathers and grandfathers before him. With the number of projects and new endeavors on the property, Charlie certainly has his hands full every day. With the vision of his artistic wife in mind, Charlie is always building, planting, harvesting, and lovingly tending the grounds of their beautiful farm and winery. Proud wife Carrie says of her husband, “He is creative and works well with his hands. As we say, ‘I design it and he builds it.’” All elements of their gorgeous winery have been painstakingly thought out and built by the family--from the repurposed aluminum siding of the crush house, to the vintage tractors actually used by Charlie’s family years ago, that serve as a constant reminder of this fifth-generation farming family’s roots. Charlie Jr., now 18 years old, is studying to carry on the family business—albeit from a slightly different angle. He is studying Wine and Viticulture at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. “We wanted him to get out there and go to college,” Dad Charlie continues, “Growing up on a farm, this life is all you know. We wanted to give him a chance to find his own way. If he wants to come back here and work on the winery side, at least we know that it was his choice.” Younger brother Max is starting high school at Temecula Valley

This active 14-year-old loves water polo and is a passionate member of the mountain biking team. Growing up on a farm definitely has its advantages. With the wide-open space of their 25-acre property, Charlie Jr. and Max’s upbringing was quite a bit different than their school friends. With the ability to drive into town in less than 10 minutes, the brothers were able to experience the freedom of country living with the convenience of a more metropolitan setting. “We love this area,” adds Carrie, “We love the ‘small town’ feel. We’re always looking for ways to engage with our community and create an opportunity for them to create lasting memories.” As much as Charlie and Carrie love meeting the visitors to their winery and reaching out to the community, this playful, lively bunch loves their time away from home. They love to travel— especially to their favorite place, their home away from home: Mexico. Though they don’t get to their little Mexican beach casita as much as they wish, the Peltzers love traveling up and down the Baja peninsula—toes in the sand, sipping tropical drinks, and enjoying their time away together. “We work hard and play hard,” Carrie reveals, “When you live on the property that your business is on, you tend to want to vacate when it gets really busy. If we don’t get out of here every so often, all we do is work.” Between their bustling winery—booked with weddings, events, pop-up marketplaces, food trucks, and a plethora of projects—the Peltzer family still finds a way to give back to the community. They hold multiple charitable events at the winery each year and team up with tons of

local charities to give back and further their mission of impacting the community. The next time you stop by Peltzer winery, you might just get lucky enough to see Duke and Stella running around, chasing rabbits, playing with their beloved soccer ball, and living the best life two dogs could dream of. A brother and sister border collie team, these farm dogs hang out at the winery daily—and have even gathered quite a following on Instagram (@peltzerpups)! Once you walk into the striking crush house, you will notice right away the love and care that goes in to creating a unique atmosphere like the Peltzer Family Cellars and Farm. You might even see Charlie, usually dressed in his signature baseball cap and farming attire, working on the farm’s next big project. Or, perhaps you will find Carrie, envisioning and chatting about the next big design project for their little slice of heaven. One thing is sure—when the sun goes down, all the guests leave for the day, and the crush house is locked up for the night--that is when Charlie and Carrie are able to grab a glass of their delicious wine, look out over all they’ve created, and really enjoy the thing they like to do best: front porch sippin’ with the ones they love. Join the Peltzer Family at their annual Peltzer Pumpkin Farm starting this year on September 28. From pumpkins and gourds for purchase, to train rides, pony rides, face painting, carnival games, a petting zoo, gem panning, John Deere mini carts, and pig races, this is a beloved fall festival you won’t want to miss it. In their own words, “Happy Harvest, y’all!”F

Dale Peck, the Craft Distiller of
Galway Spirits B Y K AT E D E R R
A
s Temecula Valley grows, more and more talented souls rise to the surface. Sometimes, it’s easy to get caught up in today and forget where you came from. In this issue, we’re getting to the roots of Dale Peck, the craft distiller at Galway Spirits of Temecula. As we spoke with Dale, we found out just how much his connection with distilling and family bonds are truly intertwined.
Dale began his journey with something that most entrepreneurs are familiar with: curiosity. His brother had dabbled in wine-making, and after working with and tasting wine that was “not up to par”, Dale suggested a switch to brandy. Little did he know, what had started as an idea for a hobby after retirement ended up growing into something much bigger than he could ever have imagined. Six years ago, Dale and his wife, Jackie, settled in Temecula where they began to speak with wineries about creating a line of brandy. Once the couple acquired the necessary licenses and retired, they soon realized that the brandy business wasn’t at all what they expected. With local distilleries creating a buzz, they knew they needed to reevaluate the market. After a 5-year process of planning, permitting, and weighing the options to develop their products, they decided they couldn’t do it alone. After meeting and negotiating for five months with Ken Smith, owner of Galway Downs, Dale and Jackie became a part of the Galway Downs family. We now know their collaboration as Galway Spirits. After their good fortune of starting this venture, they soon learned that distilling and innovating was in their blood. In the 1860s, Dale’s great-great grandfather owned an oil company that he later sold to a Mr. John D. Rockefeller—around the same time that he acquired multiple still patents. “Seems to be in my DNA”, says Dale with pride and a chuckle. To top it off,
Jackie had a great grandfather that sent out bottles of alcohol alongside his dairy farm milk deliveries during the prohibition era. While they were unknowingly carrying on family legacies, Dale and Jackie now look back at these discoveries with a smile. Dale’s love for what he does translates into some of the purest liquors around town. When asked what his personal favorite formulation was, he says that their flavored vodkas are very popular and best of all, gluten-free. Some upcoming fall favorites, he adds, are their Peppermint Bark and Pumpkin Spice vodkas. As a bit of advice to aspiring distillers, Dale says “It’s fun, it’s expensive to start, but it’s rewarding.” When he thinks about how these experiences have impacted his life, he lets out a good laugh and remembers thinking he was just picking up a hobby after retirement. However, he and Jackie are now busier than ever. “We don’t mind the work, but we will never truly retire. We have fun spending time with family and sharing this venture together. Before, we spent our time working apart, and now we’re working and playing together.” He also touches on the rewards of his practice. “You catch a bug which makes you want to do more,” he says. This labor of love comes full circle when he and his wife witness their crystal-clear finished product, and experience the joy of watching Galway Spirits guests react to their creations. F

Originally a Sous Chef, Chef Anila has seen this spot evolve over time into what it is now—a mouthwatering selection of dishes from burgers and pizza to their delectable homemade pastas—labeled as an allencompassing “California fusion” grill. We dined at Bar Meets Grill on a beautiful Thursday evening. Though most of the tables are filled—including the large, impressive bar in the front of the restaurant—we’re seated right away at a table near the beautiful open-air kitchen. Chef Anila immediately comes to our table to introduce herself, as she tries to do with guests as much as she can, and her passion for her work is evident right out the gate. “Tonight, I will cook for you. What do you like to eat?” she asks us

excitedly as she takes our menus off the table. The moment we mention seafood, her eyes light up and a huge smile crosses her face. “I love seafood!”, she says as she begins thinking up and mentioning all the dishes she wants to prepare for us. Our mouths water as she heads back to the kitchen—cooking up a culinary game plan for the meal in her head as she goes. The first dish out of the kitchen that night is an incredible charcuterie plate. Plated on a gorgeous wooden board, the dish consists of delicious Manchego and goat cheeses, different cuts of salami, delectable grilled eggplant cooked to perfection, amazing marinated mushrooms, grapes, walnuts, and dark chocolate with nuts—a beautiful presentation, and the perfect amount of food and blend of flavors. The next dish Chef Anila brings us is her famous homemade spinach and cheese ravioli in red sauce. Made fresh daily inhouse, please believe us when we say that this is the best ravioli we have ever tasted.
After the ridiculously flavorful raviolis, the seafood dishes start to make their way to our table. The first of them, a grilled—not fried— calamari, presented with an amazing, almost bruschetta like mixture of tomato, basil, and garlic. After we’ve practically licked the plate clean of Calamari, Chef Anila brings out a truly beautiful grilled octopus salad—set over a bed of greens with a balsamic glaze. The freshness of the seafood is evident with every tender bite. Our stomachs grow fuller by the moment, as Chef Anila brings out the main event: a huge plate full of Cioppino with homemade linguini—overflowing with lobster tail, jumbo shrimp, calamari, mussels, clams, and Chilean sea bass—
19
followed by a jumbo shrimp with fresh pasta and a white wine, butter, and garlic sauce. The flavors of these two dishes tantalize our taste buds as we attempt to eat as much of these ample servings as our stomachs will allow. Just when we think we cannot possibly eat another bite, Chef Anila brings us a perfectly assembled Affogato for dessert— Kahlua, espresso, ice cream, and pistachio crumbles— presented beautifully in a martini glass and topped with a macaroon and dark chocolate straw. If there was anything that could give us the perfect finish to a perfect meal, it was this masterpiece. On this incredible night to remember, we felt completely special, pampered, and taken care of— and Chef Anila’s talent and hospitality radiated in every interaction we had with her. There are no words to fully describe the night we had at Bar Meets Grill—so you will just have to go experience it for yourself. F

rt really is a universal language. Staring at a painting or listening to a song can help us to communicate the way we are feeling, without saying a word. Pain, happiness, sorrow, elation, excitement, hopelessness—all of these emotions, and more, can be related through a single work of art. Sometimes, at the height of our emotions, this is the only way we can communicate the way we feel to the world. For Crystal McFarlin, art has changed her world completely—and it has given her a way into the heart and mind of her child. “After our daughter was diagnosed with Autism at the age of 2, back in 2009,” Crystal remembers, “our lives were forever changed.” Throughout her early childhood, her young daughter grew increasingly frustrated as she desperately tried to communicate her thoughts and feelings to her mother but was unable to connect using typical spoken language. After years of ABA therapy, sign language, speech therapy, and more, Crystal still felt a disconnect in her daughter’s progress, like there was something missing. And to this incredibly loving and devoted mother, that was truly heartbreaking. Completely committed to finding her daughter the tools she needed to develop and find her way, Crystal quit her desk job and dedicated herself to her daughter 24/7. One day, after what seemed like a constant struggle, Crystal had the idea to buy her daughter a journal to help her express herself—and as she watched her sweet girl start to blossom with the doodles and coloring in her book, she knew she was on the right track. “I watched as she focused on her scribbles, shapes & colors. I would talk to her about them, explaining emotions and feelings. It seemed to click with her. It became a part of our daily routine. She brought it everywhere.” From that moment, Crystal’s daughter began to thrive. She was instantly taken with drawing in her journal, and eventually, painting. Now, she has so much to say through art, and Crystal could not be happier. Recently, Crystal was presented with an opportunity to embark on an incredible journey that would allow her to combine the power of art with a way to support the local Autistic community that has supported her and her daughter—and with that, Pretty Paints Mobile Studio was born.
Temecula’s premier mobile arts studio, Pretty Paints travels all over the Temecula Valley, offering fun paint workshops for adults and children. From Paint & Sip Parties at local wineries, breweries, and restaurants, to private parties at your home or office, Pretty Paints is committed to bringing the fun and freedom of expression through art to all who are interested. You can find them at local favorites like Peltzer Winery, 1909, Masía de la Vinya, Wine Ranch, and many more. Check out their upcoming schedule and purchase tickets on their facebook, @prettypaintsparty. Of course, it isn’t all just fun and games, this mobile art studio creates with a purpose. Crystal and Pretty Paints have teamed up with Our Nicholas Foundation—an incredible resource in the community to families of kids and young adults with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder)—to create the new Autism and the Arts Initiative. Fifty percent of the proceeds from every Pretty Paints class will be donated to this incredible cause. “This is an Initiative that we created with Our Nicholas Foundation, which provides free art classes, camps and other courses for local children with ASD!” Crystal explains, “The classes will focus on fine motor skills and creative expression. ALL children are welcome, which is great for social skills, and families that want to send their children to class with their siblings & friends. It gives children on the spectrum a creative outlet and provides ALL students the opportunity to express their feelings.” Everyone should have an outlet to express how they feel—especially when words just don’t seem to cut it. An old English author once said that the pen is mightier than the sword—and according to this inspiring business, it seems to be true of a paint brush as well. F

ydnee Michaels moved to Temecula with her family when she was 8 years old—right around the time she first started playing golf. From the moment she began taking lessons, this passionate young girl set her ambitious little sights on the ultimate goal: to play on the LPGA tour. After playing throughout her time at Linfield Christian School and four years in college at UCLA, Sydnee was finally ready to compete in the big leagues, and she made her transition to play with the best of the best in the LPGA tour. She was able to travel the world with the tour, and with all her dreams coming true around her, laser-focused Sydnee worked hard to be the greatest golfer she could be. When Sydnee began suffering from back pain in her most recent seasons, she took a deep breath and played through it— convinced that it was just the normal wear and tear common among avid golfers. By Kat rina McBreen
You can’t always help the hand that is dealt to you—but you can always control what you do with it. Dr. Gloria Tumbaga is living proof of that. Now a successful doctor with a thriving wellness practice and medispa in Temecula, Gloria’s start in life was far less glamourous. With the drive, determination, and curiosity that helps any student thrive in a school environment, Gloria used the power of knowledge and education to power through the tough times in her life—to seek and bask in the light at the end of the tunnel. Gloria Tumbaga grew up on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. Born into a family of little means, Gloria and her siblings did not have much in the way of resources while they were young. When she was still a young child, tragedy struck her family that would change the course of her life forever. Gloria’s mother passed away right before her eyes. The doctors informed her family that it was pneumonia that took her young mother too soon. It wasn’t until Gloria was older, in the Hawaiian foster care system, that she started to ask the question: “Why?” Why had her mother succumbed to this treatable illness, and why had there been no one to help her mother when she needed it? Young Gloria soon realized that due to the socioeconomic class her family was in, there was simply no resources that her mother knew of to get the treatment she needed. Instead of letting this heartbreak make her a victim, Gloria began to harness the one thing that would empower her the rest of her life: she turned to education. Gloria began breaking statistics
the second she graduated high school. For kids in the system, simply graduating is a feat that many fall short of. Once Gloria received her high school diploma, she knew she needed to continue learning. With a drive to empower people in the same situation her own family had been in, Gloria entered Nursing School in Hawaii, in the hopes that she might be able to give all people access to the resources, care, and knowledge that could save their lives.
“I WANTED TO MAKE AN IMPACT,” GLORIA REMEMBERS, “I WANTED TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO PEOPLE WHO WERE LIKE ME—SO NO ONE WOULD HAVE TO EXPERIENCE WHAT I DID WHEN I WATCHED MY MOTHER DIE.” After becoming
a registered nurse, this life-long learner wanted more, and decided to go for her doctorate. Always resilient and eager to learn, Gloria Tumbaga finally became Dr. Gloria Tumbaga. With the help of several mentors that helped her get

through, and her own determination to overcome adversity, Dr. Tumbaga was finally able to look back at how far she had come. “Sometimes I don’t give myself enough credit,” she adds, “Life is a journey, and in each moment, you are exactly where you are supposed to be. Relish each moment and champion your accomplishments daily.” After she received her doctorate, Dr. Tumbaga embarked on medical missions and charity work, all the while inspiring people to take control of their health— and their lives. In 2010, Dr. Tumbaga left the islands to begin her next adventure on the mainland—and the rest of Gloria’s story is still being written. With a thriving practice in Temecula called Wellness Diagnostics and Medispa, Dr. Tumbaga is helping people in Temecula Valley to feel good inside and look good on the outside. When she looks back on her life, Gloria has this to say, “Don’t wallow in sorrow. Whatever is given to you, no matter where you start in life, you can always—always—pull yourself up and rise above.” F TEMECULAVALLEYVIBE.COM

don’t forget to have some fun By Pax Ansley

veryone needs something to light their fire. Some people find that passion and fulfillment in their spouse, children, or career—but what happens when that foundation of happiness is removed somehow? How does a person define themselves when the very source of “who they are” is stripped from them? What happens when the stay-athome mom whose world has revolved around her children for 18 years becomes an empty nester? What of the career business man that suddenly loses his job? When we let one single thing define who we are, we shortchange ourselves from a world of possibility. Finding a hobby—something outside of the people and jobs we love—can be the difference between futility and purpose, worthlessness and meaning. When we are kids, we are pushed into this extracurricular or that one— our parents and teachers encourage us to become well-rounded and to find something that we are good at to get us
through our schooling years. They stress the importance of sports and music, debate and art—but what about life after your diploma? When there are no more grades to be given, no more GPA or transcripts, or potential scholarships to dream colleges, that is when the signup sheets for band and football disappear. You will find no more zealous student recruiters trying to sign you up for cooking class, young entrepreneurs, or glee club. Adults tend to be neglected in the way of hobbies. Fun often takes a backseat to things like responsibility, duty, and other “grown-up” worries. But who says kids get to have all the fun? Here is our challenge to you: every week, do something just for the fun of it. Dust off those golf clubs you haven’t picked up in years and head to the driving range. Attend a Paint & Sip class to get in touch with the right side of your brain for a while. Sign up for an adult Karate class or a fencing lesson at a local studio, or test your poise and rhythm with a tap or jazz dance class. What is
stopping you? You have nothing to lose and everything to gain from finding something new to engage your brain. Join a book club to meet fellow bibliophiles in the area, or hook up with a Moms’ Fitness Group to get in shape as you have a blast chatting with people like you. Ever tried axe throwing, fencing, or archery? We can guarantee you will never feel quite as empowered as chucking an axe or shooting an arrow across the room at a target. Search for an adult sports team—ultimate frisbee, soccer, kickball, roller derby, even dodgeball—there is no telling the experiences you will have and the lasting friendships you will make. Whatever you do, try to leave your “grown-up” worries at the door for just a little while—trust us, they will be there for you when you leave. And maybe— just maybe—you might get a little inspiration to lighten up a bit and relish the moment a little more. After all, life moves too fast. Don’t get so caught up that you forget to enjoy yourself. F

your house need an upgrade? Whether you are just moving in to a “fixer-upper” or have been dreaming of an update for years, one of the best places to start is the kitchen. The kitchen has always been the heart of the home—a gathering place for making memories with your friends and loved ones. In terms of cost effectiveness for a home makeover—essentially getting the most bang for your buck—starting with your kitchen can make a world of difference in the look and feel of your house. And before you start envisioning sledgehammers tearing down walls, exposed pipes, and going for months without the use of your kitchen, read on for some remodel tips from a true professional. We sat down with Gary Davider from Capital Counters and Cabinets to get the truth about kitchen transformations. A great place to start in a kitchen remodel is your kitchen cabinets. Refinishing, refacing, or replacing your cabinets is a great way to give your kitchen a fresh new look, without breaking the bank. If you are happy with the existing layout of your kitchen, and the doors of the cabinets themselves are in good shape, refinishing is the perfect option. Instead of ripping everything out and starting over, a fresh coat of paint or stain can make a world of difference. A fresh color and a new set of knobs on your cabinets can change the whole style of your kitchen. Going for a beautiful farmhouse style kitchen? A coat of white paint on your cabi-
cupboards completely out of reach, or maybe you are scratching your head questioning the rationale of one small pantry in a large and spacious kitchen. Whatever your storage woes, fully rebuilding your cabinetry can completely transform your kitchen—giving you space where there was none, and ultimately, putting your cabinets exactly where you want them—with the look you desire. To take the revamp a step further, replacing countertops is the perfect way to modernize your kitchen—and finally replace those outdated 1960’s laminate countertops. With gorgeous luxury options like quartz, natural stone, and even the less-pricey (but still stunning and high-quality) prefabricated granite and quartz, you can update your countertops and quickly take your home into the 21st century. Everyone knows—new countertops and a stunning new backsplash go together like general contractors and hardhats—you just can’t have one without the other. While you are deciding on your elegant new countertops, be sure to keep a new tile backsplash in mind. With beautiful color schemes and tile patterns—modern subway tile to earthytoned glass tile with a pop of color—your backsplash is the perfect way to express your style and design preferences. Although home renovations—especially in such an important room as the kitchen—can seem overwhelming, finding the right people for the job is the first step to a hassle-free, seamless experience. For those with a taste for something a little more modern, vivid blues or yellow can make your cabinets the statement, or focal point, of your space. If you are happy with your layout and storage space, but wish you could incorporate a different style door to your cabinets, refacing is the way to go. Choose from thousands of different options in Capital Cabinets gorgeous Temecula showroom, with tons of designs and textures, you can find exactly the style you are looking for. You can achieve that beautiful contemporary kitchen you desire, or the perfect Mediterranean warm wood cabinet faces to accompany your Spanish revival style. Counters, you can visit their expansive showroom to be involved in every step of the process of design, with no surprises. If you are having trouble visualizing your completed project, Capital Cabinets and Counters have professional designers on staff to steer you in the right direction. Not only will this designer create a custom-made sample color/texture/pattern board for your project, but they can actually create a 3D rendering of your space—to show you exactly what your finished project will look like. The moment you step into their unique and well-organized showroom, you are sure to be impressed with their all-star team. Once decisions have been made on color, design, and style—that’s when the fun begins. You will be kept informed throughout every step of the project as you watch your space transform in as little as two weeks. Of course, the specifics of each job will vary, but Gary promises, “For less intensive projects, we are usually done in two weeks. Most major renovations projects can be completed in two to six weeks. But we will be there every step of the way until completion, we guarantee that.” So, what are you waiting for? Don’t be embarrassed to invite people to your home. Turn your kitchen into something you are proud of. Your kitchen is the heart of the house, it’s time to show it some love. Viva Halen!
Ohh ohhh ohhhhh, Jamie’s cryin’! Viva Halen - one word ENTERTAINING! This David Lee Roth era Van Halen tribute band is seriously talented, energetic, enjoyable and very engaging. It’s obvious they have a passion for not only Van Halen’s music, but for putting on a GREAT show. I had the satisfaction of watching these musical studs at the beautiful Lorimar Winery, located in the heart of Temecula’s wine country. I had no clue that so many dancing Van Halen lovers could pack the area in front of Lorimar’s stage. The band is led by Steven Lee on vocals, with Frank Rodriguez on guitar, Rob Lontonk on bass, and Jeff Page on drums. They crossed paths for the first time while playing the famous Los Angeles music scene. From there, Viva Halen was born! Steven’s voice is purely spot-on, and definitely does Roth justice. However, he also delivers high energy and custom dance moves with that voice! The complete package! Moving on to Frank, there’s no question his guitar playing would make Eddie Van Halen proud—big time; especially since he’s respectfully shredding the EVH Frankenstein Striped Series Signature guitar! Next, Jeff on the drums was like watching Alex Van Halen—two sticks in a blurry fury that sounds oh so good— not to mention just simply cool-looking! Last but not least, there’s Rob on bass. The thumps he was producing definitely solidified the band’s captivating sound. And there’s no doubt that Michael Anthony would tip a glass of old No.7 whiskey Rob’s way, for him playing a Jack Daniels bottle bass guitar—the ultimate respect. If you’re in the mood for an eruption, or runnin’ with the devil, or you simply just have the hots for a teacher, then make sure you’re front and center at their next show! BY VICTORIO CHACHAREEBALO

ucked away in the rolling hills of the Santa Ynez Valley is the quaint little gem of a wine town called Solvang--just a scenic four hours or so drive up the California coast. Known for their Danish architecture and incredible local wines, Solvang is the perfect destination for those with a taste for the grape, tasty beer, local handmade goods, and delicious food. And if you are anything like us, having a local RV resort to stay at is definitely a plus. Right outside of Solvang is the wonderful little town of Buellton, California. While it was their split pea soup that put them on the map (a stop at Anderson’s is definitely a must!), Flying Flags RV Resort and Campground is definitely our favorite attraction. This Highway West Vacations property has definitely earned the title of “resort”. With plenty of roomy RV spots—with full hookups—the comfort and convenience of these premium sites trump any that we have stayed at before. But these sites are just the beginning. For those without a rig, Flying Flags offers brand new cottages and cabins with all the modern luxuries you could ask for. With full kitchens, fenced patios, BBQ stations, and fire pits, these little bungalows are perfect for a large group where not everyone has an RV or trailer. Plus, these adorable modern cabins are upscale and elegant and come in different sizes, with access to all the same amenities as the RV sites. For those with a taste for “glamping”, Flying Flags offers Airstream Row—a line of permanent Airstream trailers for rent—each with their own fenced in outdoor area, BBQ station, and fire pit. They also have Safari Tents for rent, so you can feel like you are on safari in Africa, but with all the comforts of a hotel. Check out their website for a full list of accommodations and availability (highwaywestvacations.com/properties/flyingflags). During the warmer months, you can find a spot or rent a cabana at one of their two gorgeous pools. Because, trust us, you’ll be back. On day two of our adventures in the Santa Ynez Valley, we decided to hit up some of the local wine tasting rooms. (Of course, if wine is not your bag, you’ll also find Figueroa Mountain Brewery and Firestone Walker Brewery within a short bike ride from Flying Flags). After a short Uber ride into Solvang, we started with an old favorite—Wandering Dog Wine Bar. This pooch friendly tasting room is a collaboration of many local wineries—you can sample the wines of the Central Coast with a glass or a flight paired with charcuterie or chocolate truffle, the perfect way to get a bit of everything. Owner Charles walked us through some of their local favorites and ended us off with two wines of their own label—the easy to drink 2014 No Leashes Mourvedre and the rich and indulgent 2014 “Abby” Syrah. The next stop on our tasting tour took us to visit the hilarious and unapologetic Brent, owner of Lucky Dogg Winery. Those without a sense of humor need not stop by—consider yourself warned. With wines such as “2014 Doggy Style Syrah”, “2017 LPD (Liquid Panty Dropper) Chardonnay”, and the “2017 Lucky Cougar Chardonnay”— all with tasting notes to match—this is the perfect stop for those who aren’t afraid to find the fun in wine tasting. While Brent had us rolling with his one-liners, he was also a wealth of knowledge on his wines and the process of winemaking. This guy knows his stuff— and he’s got a shelf full of awards to prove it. We loved his “Doggy Style Syrah” so much that we walked away with a bottle, although we wish we would have bought one of his “I love Doggy Style” shirts to go with it. After a nice stroll down Solvang’s main drag, we came to the beautiful beach-themed Dana V Wines. A contrast to the more traditional tasting rooms of Solvang, Dana V’s tasting room is bright and airy—featuring gorgeous mermaid-vibe tiles along the back wall, modern clear polymer barstools, a glimmering sea glass bar top, and a wine tap built right into the wall. When weather permits, Dana V offers a patio out front of their tasting room to take in the views of people passing by and the large gorgeous trees that line Solvang’s streets. The service was incredibly friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable, and the wines were fantastic—overall a gorgeous and unique spot! The last stop on our wine adventure through Solvang was Sort this Out Cellars. This retro themed tasting bar—and tiki lounge!!— was completely different from anything we had seen before. The tasting room manager Alana looked the part with a signature pin-up girl style that fit in perfectly with this totally hep, rockabilly-influenced spot. With the movie Swingers playing on a loop, and a full-on tiki lounge in the back (try their wine-based tiki drinks), the charm of Sort this Out Cellars comes from its nostalgia of 1950’s pin-up culture. With vintage Viva Las Vegas memorabilia decorating the space, and Bettie Page and other pin-up art on the labels, this is one wine bar in Solvang you won’t want to miss. While you are there, be sure to try their incredible warm Bettie Page Spiced Mulled Wine—we picked up a bottle of this stuff and might not be able to wait until the weather cools down to open it. It’s just about time for a vacation. Forget about costly flights and long boring plane rides, hop in the car or RV, hook up the trailer, pack the bicycles, don’t forget the kids, and set off for the beautiful little wine town on the Central Coast of California. We had an incredible time in the Santa Ynez Valley, and we know you will too. F

With entertaining and fitting references to movies and pop culture, you can try the 2018 Viognier that is “feminine yet fierce like the famed princess from Alderaan”, is perfectly suited for “raising the rebellion”, and would be a fantastic pairing to “Drunken Noodles, Irish Cheese, and Roasted Turkey”. If red is more your taste, sample the 2016 Cabernet Franc that tastes like “sprawling out on your bearskin rug with a fireplace crackling by your side. Imbibing on aromas of sassafras, crunchy black cherry and orange zest; you whisper, ‘Jeeves, bring me my Cabernet Franc!’” With a description like that, how could you possibly go wrong? Within their stunning 22-acre estate vineyard, Lorimar will give you a little taste of Tuscany with their iconic and distinctive winery. Their courtyard in the rear of the building features an intimate stage to house the many musicians, local and traveling, that come through their place. Peruse the artistry—with the taste of some luscious white or bold red still on your lips—while the rocking sounds of a local band float in on the Temecula Valley breeze. Heat panini grill or heavy bottom pan to medium high heat. Cover two pieces of bread with a generous amount (about 1 ½ tbsp.) of spread. Add about 3 slices of brie (depending on the size of your bread, a single layer to the edges) on one half. Next, layer apple slices across the cheese and follow with a few pieces of arugula. Cover with the other half of the bread (spread side in). Brush one side of the sandwich with the olive oil and place oiled side down on panini grill, oil the other side of sandwich and close panini maker. If using a pan, cover with another pan and place a heavy can or object to press it down. *Cook for about 3-4 min or until golden and cheese has melted. *If using a pan, flip halfway through cooking and press again.
