-Nickname: yanadhyana; -Age: 25 years old; -Country: Russia; -Studies: Fine Arts; -Tools: isograph (technical pen), ink, color pencils, watercolor, tempera

“I was very fond of painting since childhood, and I devoted all my free time to this occupation. At the age of ten my parents sent me to a children’s art school. At 16 I entered the University of Fine Arts. Getting art education has become for me a solid foundation in my development as an artist.”

Spirit of the Forest: in this work I have put emphasis on the rhythmic structure of the composition. I wanted to combine a decorative background with a realistic depiction of the face of the forest creature that hides under the “mask” of femininity. In this work I used my favorite color palette.

11

Varvara: I am often looking for inspiration in old fairy tales and folklore, this female character was created based on the old fairy tale “The Varvara beauty - long braid. I really love working using traditional techniques, especially I like to combine different materials, as it is the case of this work.

12

White Lady: the second work in the series “Duality. White femininity represents generosity, whose shadow appears unprincipled. The work is in private collections in Austria.

13

“Every artist chooses an instrument that best suits his spirit, his character. A lot of my work is done using traditional techniques because it develops my basic skills, which are one of my main areas of interest

14

Ghost of the Forest: I have always had a passion for drawing forest mystical creatures. This work was drawn specifically for a small competition “Ghosts”.

Foxtails - Disturbing Dream: the first work in the series “Duality” was inspired by a dream I had.. Fox tails and autumn leaves, a mask that hides a face without a look and shadow - a disturbing omen.

“There are a handful of people wondering and yearning to know the meaning of what they see in my works: stroke by stroke. I hope that they are able to make stories of their own, although, of course, it is my job to lead them to it. Therefore, that is why my drawings only have the minimum amount of information, the title 20

micael lopes http://micaelopes.deviantart.com http://about.me/micaelopes

-Age: 23 years old; -Country: Portuguese but living in Spain; -Studies: Fine Arts; -Tools: pastels, watercolors, acrylics and pencils.

“I would like for once and for all that people could understand that when an artist draws he is working with his mind; hands, mouth or feet are just a channel. Drawing must be valued as it is: an intellectual process of assimilation and creation. Artists are not robots that draw things from thin air <<with the grace of god>>”

She dreams with moons: a late birthday gift for my friend. I made it with love though. She’s very lovely, so I can’t quit loving her. In her dreams it often appears the elements of the sea and multiple moons. We love to talk about our dreams.

23

24

Nature’s Servant: he is from an inferior class. He is the loyal servant of Mother Nature, like many others like him. His horns are not extendible, but his arms are instead. He’s not wearing clothes, his body is like frosty, pointy wood.

Micael: it’s full of symbolism and allusions to my inner self.

“For me, the power of art, the power of dreams and the symbology are very similar. You can materialize and innovate concepts with a unique power. This is the magic and beauty that I admire in art” Mother Nature: as the Mother Nature, she’s like a goddess and has many loyal servants at her disposal. All her branches from head to “legs” are extendible at her own will. She’s able to produce moss from the tip of her fingers too.

25

Frank and Mika: I was thinking on doing a battle between Gengar and Chandelure, two of my fav ghosties, but later I’d thought everyone was drawing Gengar and it was too common, so I choose to draw this more paced scene with Frank, my Golurk from my PokÊmon Black Version, and Mika, my alter ego as a girl on the game.

26

Mika’s dream: a representation of myself in a specific scene from a heart-touching and weird dream I had a few months ago.

27

28

-Nickname: knight-of-sand; -Age: 19 years old; -Country: Poland; -Studies: self-taught; -Tools: watercolour, acrylics, coloured pencils, pencils, pastels.

Dying Ophelia: we were reading only a chapter from Hamlet at school but I was so fascinated with Ophelia that I decided to read it from cover to cover. And I loved this story!

Milky Way: I have always appreciated the beauty of nature, especially at night. The Milky Way is one of the most beautiful wonders of the world. I wanted to capture it since I live in a city where I can hardly see any stars.

“The thing that caught my attention from traditional art was the diversity of medium you can use to create masterpieces. You can choose from watercolour through oils and pencils. And this is like creating the new, better worlds, the worlds from your imagination 30

Chinese lanterns: when I saw Noc Kupały in Poland I was totally impressed by this event. Hundreds of Chinese lanters are flown away into the night sky and they just look like shooting stars.

31

-Nickname: Kirara Alex; -Age: 17 years old; -Country: Vietnam; -Studies: self-taught; -Tools: pencil, gel pen or staedtler pen, color pencil, watercolor and markers.

“When you think that it’s a nice drawing, it must be, it suits your taste, and sometimes you can just feel it and see it, it’s like love at first sight”

You II: sometimes you will find a character that you design yourself really inspiring, I just drew the character I love.

32

33

Art trade with Achikun: I really love the work of this artist, so I asked her to trade art, where we could draw what each other wanted. She wanted her character with my white-thingy (like a friendly ghost) and lots of notes characteristic of my drawing style, so I did.

34

Happy day: sometimes the joy you experience when you draw just carries you away. I just draw what I feel, and what I want is for others to experience that joy with me.

35

Stay with me: this drawing is about a girl who finds herself a peaceful place. I drew the little girl first and then thought about the character that she would need to protect her, someone she could rely on, and I simply just doodle it and there he is, a friendly friend that will always stay close to her, to keep her safe and that ... the story continues in my drawing.

“To create art it doesn’t matter what kind of material you use, it depends on what you want to draw, how you draw it and the message you want to transmit” 36

Jar of hearts: this is easier, I was inspired by the tittle of the song Jar of hearts. When I first heard it I didn’t understand it right away. Then the tittle really made me feel like, yes, I want to draw a giant jar of hearts where our feelings and emotions are kept inside.

37

lovepeaceshue http://lovepeaceshue.deviantart.com/gallery

-Age: 21 years old; -Country: Vietnam; -Studies: self-taught; -Tools: pencil 2B ,leningrad watercolor and canson paper.

“When I see something made with traditional art I can feel the artists, their breath, their dreams.

Season of birds: Spring comes and warm wind will bring love together with the melody of the birds singing with all their soul.

39

Mermaid: a simple mermaid with traditional flowers from Vietnam, the lotus.

“Painting is my dream when since when I was a child, and now it will be forever Gold Fish: I wanted to draw something with koi gold fish, of Japan, using traditional elements.

40

41

Let Rose: some people think it same “Beauty an the beast but i think why a lady can have a glamour rose or dream for it?

42

“I think that with traditional art, you make colour dance in your hands, right in front of your eyes 43

jessica allain http://enchantedwhispers.deviantart.com

“My inspiration can come from anywhere, a song, a movie, other pieces of art, but most of the time I get my inspiration from the stock itself I use

-Nickname: EnchantedWhispers -Age: 32 years old; -Country: Canada; -Studies: self-taught; -Tools: Photoshop elements 8 and a Bamboo tablet.

Believe: came together quite easily, as soon as I saw this stock I knew that I wanted to turn her into a fairy and the rest just fell into place.

44

Photomanipulation

46

The Crow: came to mind when I saw a skull stock. I wanted to create something dark but also something with a bit of light, the light being the roses.

“I want to continue learning and improving my skills and I want to always keep in mind that art and creativity should be fun and not a chore

Rest in Peace: came to mind when looking at some beautiful stocks of graves. To add a bit more interest to the piece I added the lamp.

Set my Heart Ablaze: came about because I always wanted to work with fire elements but could never find the correct model to work with, so once I added the wings, I thought fire would be a nice touch.

47

Free as a Bird: really started just with the model, the cage and the birds came later.

jessica dueck http://starscoldnight.deviantart.com/ http://www.jessicadueck.com/ http://www.facebook.com/Starscoldnight

-Nickname: StarsColdNight; -Age: 23 years old; -Country: Paraguay; -Studies: self-taught; -Tools: Photoshop and Wacom tablet.

“When I have a specific idea, I start right away working on the image. I start by cropping and putting all the layers together. When I see that all fits, proportions and composition, I work on the finishing touches, such as hair, color tone and extra details, like magic and light effects”

50

Breaking Inside: Underneath the shadow of mistakes I made Cause I feel like I’m breaking inside I don’t want to fall and say I lost it all ‘Cause baby there’s a part of me to hit the wall Leaving pieces of me behind And I feel like I’m breaking inside Out here, nothings clear Except the moment I decided to move on and I ignited Disappear into the fear You know there ain’t no comin’ back When you’re still carrying the past (Shinedown lyrics)

“The novels I love the most are from Christine Feehan, so the emotions and feelings from them, inspire me deeply. Other times I like to portray something or someone I long for or wish to be in. Like a novel or story about me

52

An Ocean in my Heart: It was only the sound Of your heartbeat alone! Oh darling, hear my soul and heed my cry Cause all my crying may flood An ocean in my heart (Fairy Tale lyrics by Shaman)

Frozen in Time: she was the light, instead He created darkness.

53

Requiem for the Fallen: I’m so tired of being here Suppressed by all my childish fears And if you have to leave I wish that you would just leave Your presence still lingers here And it won’t leave me alone These wounds won’t seem to heal This pain is just too real There’s just too much that time cannot erase When you cried I’d wipe away all of your tears When you’d scream I’d fight away all of your fears And I held your hand through all of these years But you still have All of me (Lyrics by Evanesence - My Immortal )

nikki luijben http://Yewrezz.deviantart.com

-Nickname: Yewrezz; -Age: 17 years old; -Country: The Netherlands; -Studies: self-taught; -Tools: Wacom Bamboo fun tablet and Photoshop CS3.

“I started with photomanipulation because of a Dutch horse forum. I really admired the artists there and wanted to try it myself. Of course I really sucked at it in the beginning but now, after three years, I’m really happy where it’d brought me” This monster: a friend of mine wanted to start writing again, so we created this character together and in the end I couldn’t help making a manipulation of him. This is Faelan with his sparrow companion named Sparky. He had been head over heels for Morrow, which is a character of mine, since they where little foals. But due to certain circumstances he had to turn into a bad guy in order to save her life. She never found out why he had done what he did, and hated him afterwards with her whole heart. Their tale turned into a forever one-sided love story, especially because the mare lost her memory some time after the incident and disappeared.

57

58

Perfectly still: who doesn’t love unicorns? That - and the fact that at that time I really just wanted to make something for fun, made me make this image.

Floating wanderer: as you might notice I love manipulating my own story-characters. Here you see Amiya, the sweet and loving mare. She led a live full of hardships and losses and had never known real love. Until at the very end of her story she and her best friend decided that after all they’d been through together, there would never be someone else who would be able to understand them better than they could. So she stayed with him for the rest of her life.

New breath: this one is actually a pretty old one. I was told that the character I portrayed here was beautiful, serene and sweet so I tried to let those characteristics reflect in this work. I really love the green with the white in this piece. It somehow gives me a refreshing, peaceful feeling.

59

“Don’t expect to be as good as those superpopular artists right away. Don’t lose faith in yourself and keep going. Create your own style by being your own inspiration, do what you think looks awesome and hold on to that!”

60

Fantasy that I wanted: morrow is a princess of a far away land, but when she was little a magical fish made her memories disappear. She forgot who she was and ran away. She found herself in a new land and met new souls, but no place felt like the home she didn’t remembered, so she kept searching...

Renu Sharma http://thedarkrayne.deviantart.com www.facebook.com/thedarkrayne www.thedarkrayne.com

-Nickname: thedarkrayne; -Age: 27 years old; -Country: India; -Studies: self-taught; -Tools: Photoshop CS5/CS6 and Wacom bamboo graphic tablet.

“In my early days, I used to be more into drawing portraits with charcoal. As I explored the world of art a bit more, I came across p h ot o- man ip u lat i o n art

Valkyrie: in Norse mythology, a valkyrie is one of a host of female figures who decide which decide which soldiers die in battle and which ones live.. The idea of having that kind of power really intrigued me. I wanted to create a majestic after battle scene to portray the power and regalness of a Valkyrie.

62

From Hell: this is an artwork portraying a female form of devil. She is fierce and rules the land of fire and of the underworld. Hence here she is made of fire and smoke. All the souls who have sinned go to her. The bones beneath her feet portray that.

Autumn again: I love the autumn season. As India is a hot country, the heat starts to lessen during this season, yet there is a comfortable warmth in the weather and it is kind of breezy too. I wanted to convey that feeling in this artwork, the magical season of autumn.

“So far I had been working on improving my techniques, so a lot of my work has been just practice. Now I am thinking deeply into it and taking a lot of risks in terms of concepts and their execution. I want to be able to tell a story through everything I create, touch people on a deeper level Fairy of the Forest: as the name says, this is about a fairy who lives in the forest. There is an entire fairy colony who lives here. They live in tree houses and nurture the nature around them with their magic. I wanted to create a magical atmosphere in this artwork.

65

Angel of Darkness: tThis is based on the cartoon character of the same name. Jessica is one of the most famous sex symbols on the animated screen. I wanted to capture her glamourous and seductive persona in this artwork.

66

Angel of Darkness: this is an artwork portraying a fallen angel. She has sinned and has been banned from angel’s side, so now she has to live in the darkness. Darkness brings a lot of loneliness and grief too. Muted color tones were used to portray a melancholic atmosphere.

3D Art

Michael Inconstant http://mickytroisd.deviantart.com https://www.facebook.com/micky.troisd

“At beginning is difficult, but with a little bit of practice, the results are surprising. In terms of software, I would recommend DAZ, it might be less powerful than others, but its easier to use”

-Nickname: mickytroisd; -Age: 40 years old; -Country: Belgium; -Studies: self-taught; -Tools: Daz Studio and Poser.

Tinuviel: means “daughter of twilight”. This is again an image for a contest I entered where I had used this environment. I worked the light according to the name of my heroine.

71

Estelle: is an image made for a contest (DAZ3D Forum). I wanted to give the character the look of a contemporary Geisha.

72

Princess Aura: is a gift to a friend. She asked me to make the character of her avatar on devianART. I just added wings to her and named her Princess in reference to Flash Gordon.

73

Asteria: I wanted to make a image with a “vintage sci-fi style (like Flash Gordon) and I was pretty happy with the result.

74

Observatory: is a tribute to one of my favorite creators : Alfaseed (the armor of the young woman). There is always a lot of creativity going into these creations.

75

-Nickname: CordobezWeee; -Age: 24 years old; -Country: Argentina; -Studies: Graphic Design; -Tools: Photoshop CS6, Vue, C4D, Sketchup and After Effects.

“I started working with 3D as a necessity to create matte painting scenes that only using photos I could not achieve. This combination also gives more realisms to the scenes 76

Nicolรกs Zuriaga http://cordobezweee.deviantart.com/ www.cordobezweee.com.ar https://www.facebook.com/DigitalMattePaintingNicolasZuriaga

City: I really enjoyed doing this scene. I always wanted to do something futuristic with tall buildings. In this case 3D programs helped me a lot (like VUE). I think the outcome is pretty good and I loved how the final composition looks.

77

78

Alburnos: one of my first attempts to create a 3D landscape with VUE. The first thing was to arrange the mountains into a composition I liked. Once happy, I finished the image in Photoshop where I played with colors, illumination and details.

“In my own experience, I think that the best program to start working with is Sketchup, it’s easy and you can do really nice things. Then if you want to learn more, I recommend moving to 3dsMAX o C4D”

Spacial: another work done mostly in VUE. This Sci-Fi Landscape is done with an spacial environment. I like how the effect of the blue light shinning as a rising star looks.

79

Palacio: is very different from my other works, the finished look is distinct. All the structure was done in VUE. I was trying different angles and it took a lot of time to decide which one I liked the most, after some trials I chose this one. Textures and details were made with Photoshop.

“I work creating buildings and the things I like the most about 3D is setting the illumination and render. Create complex materials is one of the most difficult things in 3D and one day I would love to learn this” -Nickname: Nicuspocus; -Age: 24 years old; -Country: Spain; -Studies: Industrial design and multimedia engineering and a 3D concept art and animation master degree; -Tools: 3ds Max, VUE xStream, Mental Ray, Poser and Photoshop.

“I’m not someone who likes to try all the new programs that are released to the market. However, if I have to recommend one, I think that Sculptris is easy and fun, I’m sure a lot of people know about it” New building

“Zbrush is a real revolution. You can model using Zspheres, Dynamesh, Decimation Master and a thousand tools more that have simplified the work, and although boring, are a useful thing to have in 3D modelling

“At some point I realized that if I wanted to see my dreams become true I needed a lot of courage and sacrifice a lot of things. It was at that moment that I decided to become an illustrator or at least die trying” Nancy in Hell: a nice girl must always keep her working tool clean. Illustration included as a pin-up in the comic Nancy in Hell on Earth by El Torres.

87

88

Shara. Darkness Spectrum: illustration done for the playing cards Épica, Edades Oscuras. I was the art director of the project responsible for a large part of the graphics. The illustration shows an assassin with the magic power of splitting herself into several copies to distract enemies. Every clon takes a sword from her back.

“For me art represents everything. While working it’s like time stops and everything else just disappears, there is nothing else you want to do and you want that moment to last forever”

Satashia. Blood Spirit: this illustration was also done for Épica, Edades Oscuras. She is one of the heroes from Oni’s Clan (demon’s clan) in her unleashed shape, a Blood Hybrid, a cross between human and demon. Each clan is represented by a color, and Oni´s is red.

89

Sharra Nirthanbei: a character from the rol game Aventuras de la Marca del Este. She is a very skilled and agile mercenary killer, always in the shadows.

“It is truly difficult to be fully happy with the outcome of your illustrations, but this dissatisfaction will push you to outstrip, learn and evolve Red Sonja: illustration for the rol game Aventuras en la Marca del Este. It was conceived in grey scale as the book illustrations are all in grey. But when I finished, I decided to make another version in color. I love the combination of black, red, white and grey because it is the most representative color of Red Sonja.

Tempation: is an allusion to the temptation par excellence: Eve and the snake. It has a symbolism that I find particularly fascinating and which I have faced several times: what attracts me most is not the religious significance, but the psychoanalytic!

“I watched lots of tutorials and practiced a lot. Sometimes I used to loose my confidence during those times, but I never gave up studying. I don’t think that there is an artist that followed a different path other than practicing a lot and experimenting to develop artistic skills. Shaman: I was always influenced by the shamanic spirituality, charm and healers. I think this is because I was a keen follower of Conan comic series. Their will to use and attribute meanings to animal bones in their rituals and outfits, their scary looks, and their ability to read the nature and unguessable tempers, made them indespensable in my imagination. In this painting I tried to synthesize all the examples that I liked the most.

99

Dwarf: I saw the “Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” just a week after it came out, and I liked it very much. I don’t know why but I felt the desire to draw a dwarf. After a few sketches I chose the best. This was my first serious work in Zbrush. I sculpted the embossed faces on the statues and belt. Initially the figure had his hands on an axe resting on the ground, but the fur on the shoulders was blocking the viewing angle of the portrait. Since the pipe is an important part of dwarves, I did not want to miss it.

100

Dude: actually I was trying the new brushes that I installed in Photoshop. It really got into shape quickly. The process was entertaining for me.

101

Hot persuit: the first sketches that I experimented with for this painting were of a species that can’t fly; Andalgalornis. But I wasn’t satisfied with any of them. So I ended up with a raptor like hybrid species that has manes and fur. A rider and a victim was needed to fit with it’s nature, and that is how “Hot Pursuit” came to life.

102

“I think that both disciplines (traditional and digital) have their own difficulties. In digital art there are a lot of tools that you can use to achieve your goals. Is this too simplistic ? I think it is. In traditional methods there is a bond with your work that is imprinted in the soul of the final result, and this is an important fact 103

faruk hussain http://farukhussain.deviantart.com/

-Country: United Kingdom; -Studies: self-taught; -Tools: Photoshop CS5 & Wacom 3 A4 tablet.

“I observe my surroundings a lot. I appreciate nature but also find beautiful things down the gritty urban streets of London city. Other times my imagination is stimulated by flicking through a magazine, newspaper, looking at a movie poster or whilst watching a movie or TV show” Concetta Warrior: Concetta Mazza is an Italian Model. I was playing around with the idea of painting a beautiful and strong female fighter when I saw Concetta’s photograph under DA’s popular listing of the day. I could perceive her wearing armor and carrying a sword. For me this was still early days painting with a digital tablet. I constantly changed the painting the whole way through- adding different backgrounds and changing her armor. After 40 odd hours I was pretty satisfied with what I had.

104

Artic Wolf: this painting began as an experiment. I was learning how to paint fur. I looked though hundreds of images of furry animals for reference, and tried out different brushes and settings in Photoshop. It was a pleasant learning experience drawing this beautiful animal.

“It is a lot faster to create a digital painting. No mixing colour, no waiting for paint to dry, no washing brushes, but the fundamentals of what you learnt as an artist are still applied

106

“I admire a lot of artists. From the magnificent Leonardo Da Vinci, to the fantasy worlds of Feng Zhu. They have skill, but also powerful minds. I find their vision and level of creativity, extraordinary Lady with Horns: this painting slowly generated from speeding painting faces, and adding fantasy elements to characters. I start off painting this way with a lot of my artwork. If I like a sketch I elaborate on it.

107

The Deep: I often do sketches before bedtime. This was a quick 3hr sketch mostly drawn with CS5 hard round brush – to me the ultimate brush. Beginners often think one of the secrets to digital art is a special brush or brush set. I always stick to the default CS5 hard brushes and this image was painted mostly with that brush.

“What I like most is to draw fantasy. When I have a creativity crisisI take a break for a few weeks in any beautiful fantasy-MMO game. For methis is like taking a fairy tale journey from the comfort of home

For Ginger: a portrait of my friend. I painted the face from reference, but then I turned it into a romantic spring image.

111

Yorida: I did this for an avatar. I tried to convey the personality of the character that was asked.

112

Dark Elfess: my character from the game Lineage2. I did this drawing for a contest within the game and got an award for it. For the figure, I did not use any photos or screenshots from the game, and I changed the armour to my taste.

113

Latrodectus mactans: there is no plot or story behind this image. It is just a fantasy idea that I came up with.

114

Autumn Fairy: fantasy portrait of my friend’s girlfriend. I painted the face from photo references of her. The rest comes from my own imagination.

Pixie Game Card: colored the Pixie card for the upcoming Ancient Dreams game.

The Bridge House: okay, so I just got inspired to do some sort of house thingy. As I love buildings and houses and really don’t draw them as much as I would like to, I did this picture here. From start to finish all the work was done on the computer and just for fun. So who would like to live here ? I sort of would, except that I’m a bit scared of heights.

Underwater Escape: my interpretation of a place to escape. A place away from everything, but still surrounded by beauty and life.

Water Nymph: I worked on this picture a bit here and there and before I knew it, it was pretty much finished. It just needed the final touch.

Lonely Nymph number 2: okay, so I finally did a second lonely nymph. I got inspired the other day and this is what ended up coming out in the end. I’m glad I got around to coloring this one. Yay.. I’m slowly but surely squeezing out some personal pieces of artwork.

http://ethevian.deviantart.com With a net’s world: this illustration started as a simple idea in which I tried to show the elegance of royalty with some Art Nouveau style. I decided to achieve it with a background of spider webs. Last, I highlighted the shape of the character by giving her a light and uniform colour different from the background.

Ferae Cover Colors: this work was challenge I set myself. I took the work of a professional artist nicknamed MarioWibisono, in particular Ferae, and did my own interpretation. It took me over 60 hours to complete. I usually just work with human figures, but for this work I had to develop a scenario and a wolf, and was a tough work. I learnt a lot during the process, using mainly online tutorials and advice from other artists. 129

Digital art tutorial of: “nancy in hell” María del carmen ruiz moreno

I started this image with a pencil sketch. The reason why, is not just that I feel more comfortable drawing with pencil and paper because I have been doing it all my life and feel more secure about it, no, the reason is that I enjoy drawing in a traditional way. In some occasions, if it was up to me, I wouldn’t even add colour to the lines, I love drawing just with a simple pencil. It makes me sad that sometimes people don’t give credit to the real value of this, and do not even consider it as a finished work. For this tutorial, I made a sketch in blue and added some details and finished shapes with an oil pencil.

One of the first things is to add a paper texture to the background using a neutral color (in a different layer). This will help to set the base for mixing colours later. In another layer, under the drawing, I started applying colours to the different important elements in the illustration. These colours will help too to the colour mixing steps that will come later.

The first thing is to establish is the kind of illumination you will use, if it is day or night light, if there is a single point of light or several, etc... I think that a very important element to add to the scene is more realism, this will let you establish the right modelling for the elements in the scene. In this occasion the illustration has one point of light that I will place on the blade of the chainsaw, therefore I darken the top and bottom of the image with a gradient layer. For the light, I made a sketch in blue and added some details and finished shapes using an oil pencil.

I love doing portraits and faces, that is what motivates me, so I start working with the characater’s face. I think that the sculptor’s side of me helps me a lot to see the three-dimensional aspect of objects and how the light interacts with them. If I have problems with this, the best thing to do is to use models. Creating volume is magical, your image goes from 2D to 3D but still lives in the 2D world.

I continue modelling the different elements of the figure by always keeping in mind the direction of the light. I mix all the colours in the same “canvas” but without using the Photoshop tool. The tool I use the most is the colour piker with the brush at around 34% opacity. The background colour, the base colour, the line colour and the light are all the ingredients used to model the character. I always try not to lose the drawing.

Some elements need a lot of playing around with before I consider them finished. I always do all the tests in separated layers, for example like with the blood of her body and clothes. I used splatter brushes, and played with modifying them, adding transparencies and other brushes. For some of the splatters, because of the specific shape or volumen, I didn’t use “pre established brushes and instead I created my own. For the splatter shapes you need to know the volume as well as the surface where they are, sometimes is not enough just playing with merging layers.

Illustrating goes by parts, at some point you need to know the shadows that the different elements will project and what shapes they will have. Some elements will be completely in the dark, in these cases I use just a glimmer to give volume to the elements in the dark zones where there is no light. You also need to know which elements will reflect light, the whole process is almost like a game where you use all the ingredients you have to define the shapes and put the different elements into the scene.

If the shapes are far away and you want to create some kind of atmosphere, these shapes must get lost or merged with the background. In this illustration, the lines of the demon that are far from the viewer are blurred. You can also add the background color to some parts of it merging the form. I could call the illustration finished at this point, but it needs something more in the background. So I finished by I adding some ethereal corpses floating from the dead demon. The same as for the blood splatter, the corpses need some experimenting with, so I drew them in a separated layer. I used the blur filter, merged some layers, used low opacity and soft brushes and a lot of testing until I got what I wanted. I always put at the bottom of my layers those with the farthest objects and the upper layers I save for the objects closest to the viewer. 134
