HARRY EPWORTH ALLEN 1894-1958 Harry Epworth Allen was a prolific artist known for his distinctive stylised landscapes, and examples of his work can be found in the collections of the British Museum, the Government Art Collection, Hepworth Wakefield and Sheffield Museums. Harry Epworth Allen was born in the Broomhall district of Sheffield, the son of a steel maker. In 1911 he started work as a clerk at Arthur Balfour Steelworks before enrolling at the Sheffield Technical School of Art. Following the outbreak of the First World War, he enlisted in the Army and was posted to France as part of the British Expeditionary Force where he became an assistant to the Observation Officer, sketching enemy equipment and locations in the field. After being posted to the frontline, Allen was gravely injured saving the life of a superior officer; he lost a leg but was awarded the Military Medal for conspicuous gallantry. After being discharged from the Army in 1918, Allen returned to work in Sheffield and became an active member of the thriving arts societies in the region. However, it was not until he was made redundant in 1931 that he became a full-time professional artist. Part of the Yorkshire Artists group, he would go on to have 39 paintings accepted to show at the Royal Academy over 23 years. His work focused on the landscape, often with figures at work chopping wood or bringing home cows, or at leisure at sheepdog trials or working on allotments. Typically depicting the Pennines around Sheffield and North Derbyshire, Allen also frequently painted in Ireland, particularly along the West Coast. Often described as ‘surreal’, Allen’s distinctive painting style is rather a simplified and highly stylised view of the landscape with an emphasis on linearity over naturalistic depth and detail. His use of tempera for many of his paintings resulted in a matte finish to his work, which further flattened form. Instead, the layers of the landscape are defined by exaggerated rolling hills and undulations, and criss-crossing networks of walls and hedges. Lots 579-587 presented here are all from the artist’s studio and were purchased by the current vendor some 20-25 years ago from the artist’s widow, Lucy.

1043 Two London Bulldog Society Bronze Plaques, 19th century, of rectangular form, bas-relief with a standing bulldog, 5cm by 5cm, in leather cases; A George V Silver and Blue Enamel Badge, Birmingham 1923, cast with the head of a bulldog and inscribed THE AIREDALE AND BULLDOG CLUB - WON BY TOMMY TRADDLES 21.11.23; A Similar Plaque, won by SELINA SNODGRASS; A White Metal Medal, inscribed Presented to the Bulldog Club London by the Queensland Bulldog Club Australia; and Eleven Badges, inscribed THE BULLDOG CLUB CORP FOUNDED 1875 and with various presentation inscriptions (16) Following the banning of bull-baiting in 1835 the demand for bulldogs declined, however a small group of enthusiasts got together to try and perpetuate the breed. The first bulldog club was founded in 1864 and introduced the first set of standards for the breed; following the failure of this first club a second club was formed in 1875, this is seen as the forerunner of all dog clubs. The London Bulldog Society was formed shortly after.

1044 An Ivory Cased Portable Diptych Sundial, probably by Charles Bloud, circa 1680, of rectangular form, the hinged cover with engraved dial, the inside with pewter lunar volvelle and rotating disk and with silvered compass rose with elliptical scale, the base with volvelle engraved with a perpetual calendar, 8.5cm by 8cm With purchase receipt from E T Biggs & Sons Ltd, dated 16 December 1955 This type of magnetic azimuth dial was specific to makers in Dieppe in the latter half of the 17th century, and is purported to have been designed by Charles Bloud. The principle by which these sundials works is based on a variation in the magnetic declination of the area around Dieppe which existed for only a short period of time in the 17th century, beginning about 1666. Similar examples are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Science Museum in London, and Snowshill Manor in Gloucestershire (National Trust)
