2159 A SET OF TWELVE VICTORIAN AND GEORGE V SILVER-GILT DESSERT-PLATES BY SYDNEY BELLAMY HARMAN, LONDON, THREE 1899, THREE 1910 AND SIX 1911, RETAILED BY HARMAN, 177 NEW BOND STREET, LONDON each shaped circular and with fluted border, engraved with a crest below a duke’s coronet The crest, ‘a griffin’s head couped with wings expanded or, gorged with a collar arg, charged with three lozenges gu.’ is that of Montagu as borne by the Dukes of Manchester, probably for William, 9th Duke of Manchester (1877-1947) 22cm diameter, 149oz 15dwt, 4,657gr (12) Provenance: Probably William, 9th Duke of Manchester (1877-1947) and by descent to his son Alexander, 10th Duke of Manchester (1902-1977), possibly sold by him Christie’s, 16 March 1949 in advance of the sale of the remaining contents of Kimbolton Castle, conducted by Knight, Frank and Rutley, 18-21 July 1949. William Angus Drogo Montagu, 9th Duke of Manchester was born at Kimbolton Castle, the former seat of the Dukes of Manchester, in Cambridgeshire, the son George, 8th Duke of and Consuelo, a Cuban American heiress who he married in 1876. Styled Lord Kimbolton on his birth and until the death of his grandfather in 1890 and then Viscount Mandeville until he succeeded his father as duke in 1892, Manchester was to follow in the footsteps of both his father and his grandfather in marrying the daughters of wealthy Americans. Unlike either of them, his marriage wasn’t to last and by 1931 the couple had divorced and the duke went to on marry an actress called Kathleen Dawes the same year. Despite the three dukes each marrying into American fortunes each seemed to be inclined to live beyond their means and so by the time of the 9th Duke, described as a spendthrift, the family fortunes were depleted. As such the duke was to spend much of his life abroad trying to hide from his debts. When he died in February 1947 his son Alexander was left with little and so was forced to sell Kimbolton Castle, which had been the family seat of the earls and later dukes of Manchester since 1615. The sales seem to have started by at least March 1949 when it would seem an initial auction of some of the family silver was held at Christie’s. By July of the same year, the sales accelerated with a four-day auction held on the castle grounds by Knight, Frank and Rutley, including everything from family portraits by the likes of Kneller and Reynolds to a mangle by Harrods which had previously been in the laundry at Kimbolton. There was a quantity of silver in the sale, including a rosewater dish and ewer described as Augsburg, circa 1610 but most of what was included in the sale was domestic plate such as cigarette-boxes and table-services and there was certainly nothing to match the description of the present plates. As such it is possible that the present plates were sold in the earlier Christie’s sale.

2174 A VICTORIAN SILVER WAITER BY BENJAMIN SMITH, LONDON, 1849, RETAILED BY BENJAMIN SMITH, DUKE STREET LINCOLN INN FIELDS shaped circular and on four scroll decorated feet, with foliage and flower heightened reeded border, engraved with foliage and rocaille centring an engraved crest, engraved underneath with an inscription The inscription reads ‘To Caroline Mary Victoire Randolph on her Marriage, From Her Godmother H.R.H. The Duchess of Kent 5th December 1849’. 19cm diameter, 7oz 6dwt, 227gr Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg Saalfeld (1786-1861) was born in Coburg, the daughter of Franz Frederick Anton, Duke of Saxe-Coburg Saalfeld and his wife Countess Augusta of Reuss-Ebersdorf. She was to marry firstly Charles, Prince of Leiningen and had two children, sadly the prince was to die in 1814, only eleven years after they were married. She was to go on to marry Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathern in 1818. Prince Edward was the fourth son of George III and as neither he or his brothers had any legitimate issue there was concerns about the succession to the throne. The Duke and Duchess were to solve the crisis with the birth in 1819 of a daughter, Princess Alexandrina Victoria of Kent, who would go on to rule as Queen Victoria following the death of her uncles, firstly George IV and later William IV. On the death of her second husband the duchess decided to stay on in England with the hope that her daughter would indeed inherit the throne. She lived at Kensington Palace, with the financial support of her brother Leopold, King of the Belgians until 1831 when she was finally granted an annuity as Victoria has finally been declared heir presumptive. The duchess died in 1861 and was buried at Frogmore, near Windsor Castle.

2195 A SET OF SIX VICTORIAN SILVER DINNER-PLATES BY PAUL STORR, LONDON, 1838, RETAILED BY STORR AND MORTIMER each shaped circular and with water lily, leaf and reeded border, engraved with a crest above and initial ‘B’ 116oz 3dwt, 3,613gr (6) A number of plates of this unusual pattern, and with the same engraving, have appeared at auction including at Bonhams, Christie’s and Sotheby’s.Interestingly it would seem that the set had previously been very widely disbursed with examples generally appearing in pairs or as singles. The crest is possibly ‘out of a ducal coronet or, a dragon’s head with the wings elevated vert’ as used by the Butterfield family of Hampshire, though the engraving on the present plates does not indicate the tincture so it is impossible to be certain.

2223 A SET OF TWELVE GEORGE III SILVER SOUP-PLATES FROM THE PELHAM SERVICE BY PAUL STORR, LONDON, 1808, POSSIBLY RETAILED BY RUNDELL, BRIDGE AND RUNDELL each shaped circular and with foliage heightened ribbon-tied reeded border, engraved with a coat-of-arms 26.5cm diameter, 273oz 8dwt, 8,504gr (12) The arms are those of Pelham impaling Aufrere, for Charles Anderson Pelham (1748-1823) and his wife Sophie daughter of George Aufrere of Chelsea, who he married in 1770. Provenance: Charles Anderson Pelham (1748-1823), later Baron Yarborough, and by descent. A Lady; Christie’s, London, 31 March 1998, lot 82. Christie’s, 12 June 2002, lot 57. These unusual plates were created by Paul Storr for Charles Anderson Pelham to add to an extensive service which he had originally commissioned, presumably to celebrate his marriage to Sophie, the daughter of George Aufrere, in 1770. The original service was probably designed, at least in part, by William Chambers and produced by the silversmiths John Parker and Edward Wakelin and others. The service is recorded in the Workman’s and Gentleman’s Ledgers which were kept by Parker and Wakelin and are now preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum and included two pairs of large tureens, two pairs of small tureens, ice-pails and comports. One of the tureens was sold by Sotheby’s, 4 June 2008, lot 237. Pelham was born in Broughton, Lincolnshire, the son of Francis Anderson and his wife Eleanor. He was to go on to inherit the estates of his great uncle Charles Pelham (d.1763) of Brocklesby, Lincolnshire and was to take the additional surname Pelham at that time. Pelham was elected to the House of Commons for Beverley in 1768 and remained Member of Parliament there until 1774 before representing Lincolnshire until 1794. He was raised to the peerage as Baron Yarborough and variously served as High Sheriff of Lincolnshire and was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society. On his death at Brocklesby Hall in 1823 he was succeeded by his son Charles who was to go on to be made Earl of Yarborough in 1837.

Jewellery Coloured Stones. It should be noted that gemstones are often treated to improve their appearance. Heating, for instance, can intensify the colour or transparency of sapphires and rubies, whilst oiling can improve the clarity of emeralds. The international jewellery trade generally accepts these methods. Once heated, the colour enhancement is permanent, though there may be some effect on the durability of the gemstone in question. Once a gemstone has been oiled, the process may need to be repeated in the future to maintain the clarity. Certificates. Some lots are accompanied by gemmological certificates which give an opinion on some or all of the gemstones included in that particular piece. These certificates may have been obtained by Tennants or supplied by vendors. It is important to note that the content of these certificates is not guaranteed by Tennants and we cannot be held responsible for any disagreement over the content of certificates after the sale or for a retrospective change in opinion by the providers of any of the certificates.

Watches All Lots are sold as seen, and the absence of any reference to the condition of a watch does not imply the lot is in good condition and without defects, repairs or restorations. Most watches have been repaired in the course of their normal lifetime and may now incorporate parts not original to them. We do not undertake any inspection of any watches prior to any Sale. We make no representation or warranty that any watch is in working order. As watches often contain fine and complex mechanisms, Prospective Buyers should be aware that a general service, change of battery or further repair work, for which they are solely responsible, may be necessary.

Card payments where the card holder is not present will only be accepted for transactions up to £500. Payment can be made and purchases collected during the auction. All accounts must be settled within 14 days of the sale. Accounts not paid within 14 days will automatically be subject to an interest charge of 5% above base rate from the day of sale.

Collection All purchases must be collected from our Leyburn offices, unless stated otherwise, within seven days of the Sale (Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5.00pm).
