Remarkably little seems to be known about the maker of this extraordinary 18ct gold service. The maker’s mark ‘ES&Co’ does not seem to be recorded in any of the standard hallmark reference books though online sources seem to all conclude that it belongs to E. Silver and Co. who are recorded at 81 New Bond Street, working from 1930 to 1952. One such online source further suggests they were selling silver and gold produced by Mark Tyzack and Sons, which suggests, as does the address on New Bond Street, that they were more likely to have been retailers rather than working gold and silversmiths, though again there seems to be no published records of such a silversmith. What is clear from the known extant works is that the items they were producing were of the highest quality and design as shown in the present service. One such example is a threepiece tea-service, referred to as ‘the flying tea-service’. Made in silver and in a similar modernist style to the present service it is now in the Pearson Silver Collection (see J. Andrews and D. Styles, Designer British Silver from Studios Established 1930-1985, Woodbridge, 2015, pp. 528-529.
The early provenance of the service is unfortunately not known. Family history suggests a connection to King Farouk. The Palace Collections of Egypt, as sold in a number of sales by Sotheby’s in March 1954, certainly contained luxury items such as this service and so that is certainly a possibility, though as yet unproven. E. Silver and Co. were certainly patronised by the very wealthiest clients. Another client who was buying from them was J. Paul Getty. He was known to have owned a gold service which was subsequently sold by the J. Paul Getty Museum at Christie’s, New York 19 April 1990 as lots 43-48. The group, in 18ct and 22ct gold, included twelve gold dessert-plates, 11 various dishes and a pair of ashtrays. Together the items weighed over 13kg and, as it happens, were each hallmarked for 1947, the same year as the present service.

In medieval France, ladybirds were held in high regard, known as “the animal of good God”. It was believed that they had an important role in protecting roses in particular, a valued flower, and it was thought that they sheltered from winter at the foot of crucifixes. They were considered then, and have continued to be, symbols of good luck.
Cartier first used ladybirds in jewellery in 1935. Set with coral and diamonds with black lacquer, the more precious examples have diamonds set in the head and feet as well as across the wings. They have adorned Cartier brooches and earrings, as well as more unusual objects like cigarette lighters and a candlesnuffer.

By the 1500’s it was fairly well-established practice for a bride to wear a tiara or circlet on the head. No longer the preserve of Royalty, gem set tiaras now signified the importance of the bride on her wedding day, and the stones and designs had their own symbolism. Diamonds have long been associated with eternity: to mean forever, everlasting. This example is typical of the mid-late Victorian period. The diamonds set in silver settings on gold backing, commonplace prior to the development of platinum working techniques (which allowed for finer, lighter settings). In addition, the versatility that allows this to be worn not only as a tiara but also as a necklace is characteristic of the innovative Victorian period.

Provenance: Property of a Lady. Gifted to the vendor on her wedding day in 1952 by Italian Princess/Marchesa Maria Nunziante di Mignano.
Suzanne Belperron (1900-1983) began her career in jewellery design at the House of René Boivin in 1919, after completing her studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Besançon. She worked as a designer there throughout the 1920’s before leaving to become the chief designer at Bernard Herz in 1932. After the death of Herz, she took over the company and re-named it Herz-Belperron, and continued to lead the designs. Developing a customer base that came to include the Duchess of Windsor, Elsa Schiaparelli, Josephine Baker and Frank Sinatra, amongst many other high-profile figures, she enjoyed working with gem materials that would be regarded by many as non-precious: agate, rock crystal and chalcedony (as featured in this lot) to name a few. She is known for minimising the use of metal in her blue chalcedony designs, to accentuate the effect of the precious gems almost clinging to the sculptural chalcedony.
The lapidary work sometimes required innovation to meet her designs, and Adrien Louard was responsible for much of this work. On occasion he had to create a new technique or tool in order to provide a stone that would fit the brief.
She never marked her pieces and famously quipped “my style is my signature”.

Coloured Stones. It should be noted that gemstones are often treated to improve their appearance. Heating, for instance, can intensify the colour or transparency of sapphires and rubies, whilst oiling can improve the clarity of emeralds. The international jewellery trade generally accepts these methods. Once heated, the colour enhancement is permanent, though there may be some effect on the durability of the gemstone in question. Once a gemstone has been oiled, the process may need to be repeated in the future to maintain the clarity. Certificates. Some lots are accompanied by gemmological certificates which give an opinion on some or all of the gemstones included in that particular piece. These certificates may have been obtained by Tennants or supplied by vendors. It is important to note that the content of these certificates is not guaranteed by Tennants and we cannot be held responsible for any disagreement over the content of certificates after the sale or for a retrospective change in opinion by the providers of any of the certificates.

All Lots are sold as seen, and the absence of any reference to the condition of a watch does not imply the lot is in good condition and without defects, repairs or restorations. Most watches have been repaired in the course of their normal lifetime and may now incorporate parts not original to them. We do not undertake any inspection of any watches prior to any Sale. We make no representation or warranty that any watch is in working order. As watches often contain fine and complex mechanisms, Prospective Buyers should be aware that a general service, change of battery or further repair work, for which they are solely responsible, may be necessary.
