In 17th century Russia the work of goldsmiths was, to some extent, organised by the ‘silver row’ and the Oruzheynaya palate The former was a term coined due to the fact that the silversmithing trade was set up in a row on the marketplace. These were the only areas where silver could be sold and applied to both Moscow and further afield. The Oruzheynaya palate was connected to the armoury of the Moscow Grand Dukes. Outside of Moscow various workshops were also set up, including at Solvychegodsk, where the Strognov family set one up based on the organisation in Moscow, housing specialists and masters (A. von Solodkoff, Russian Gold and Silver, London, 1981, pp. 1920).
Items such as the present charka derive their form from wooden utensils of the countryside. In the early part of the 17th century there were made in plain silver but as the century went on the decoration became richer. Initially enamelled using the cloisonné technique but by the end of the century, especially in Solvychegodsk, the cloisonné was giving way to fields of surface enamel with filigree interruptions (op cit., p. 52). The technique that the masters in Solvychegodsk were to champion, which was to become known as Usolsk enamel, featured ‘A ground of white enamel is overlaid over the whole surface, on which exuberant drawings are painted with fine strokes in black, mostly of large tulips, camellias, cornflower, and sunflowers. These are coloured in with liquid enamel in yellow, red, blue and pinkish violet’. Von Solodkoff goes on to describe that besides flowers ‘... there are also animals and birds which include the swan, the pelican, the lion, the bear, the stag, the fox and the sheep.’
The decoration was not limited to charka but was applied to all manner of items, including bowls, see for example one at the British Museum, dated to 1654 (1878,1230.661) and another from the second half of the 17th century (1878,1230.660). Flowers feature heavily on both of those examples as they do on another bowl of the late 17th century (Christie’s, London, 23 November 2020, lot 187) and a pair of scent bottles (Rostropovich-Vishnevskaya: The Private Collection, Sotheby’s, London, 28 November 2018, lot 3).

The crest is that of Fincham.
While the original ‘Royal Adelaide’ was broken up in 1877 a scale model of it exists in the collection of the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich (SLR0209). The catalogue entry for the model notes that the original was ‘… literally a miniature version of the 36-gun frigate `Pique’ as designed by the Chief Surveyor of the Navy, Sir William Symonds. It was built to the order of King William IV for the use of the royal princes on Virginia Water as a yacht and for sail training.’ As commemorated in the engraved inscription on the present service the ship was built at Sheerness in 1834 by John Fincham. Measuring some 50 feet in length it has to be taken apart and reassembled on Virginia Water where it was re-launched in the presence of the Royal family. Among the surviving sections of the ship is the figurehead which is now at the National Museum of the Royal Navy at Portsmouth and the cannon which were donated by the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, to Cowes Castle.

An Indian Silver Hot-Water Jug, Possibly by Raghavji Mawjee (Mawji) or Oomersee Mawjee (Mawji), Burj, Kutch District, Late 19th Century baluster and with ivory-insulated lizard cast handle, the neck chased with foliage scrolls and flowers populated by birds and on a matted ground, the lower body chased with fruiting grapevines on a matted ground, centring eight medallions, four with foliage scrolls and four with scenes of animals, comprising a lion attacking a deer; two leopards attacking a horse, with the fallen rider underneath; a lion attacking an elephant and a leopard attacking a man, with acanthus borders, the hinged cover similarly decorated and with a lion cast finial 25cm high, gross weight 26oz 19dwt, 838gr
Both Raghavji Mawjee (Mawji) and Oomersee Mawjee (Mawji) are known to have used versions of the distinctive cast lizard handle as on the present jug. The former for example produced a threepiece tea-service in the typical Kutch-style with lizard handles. On that example, however, the insulators run through the legs of the lizard rather than through the body as on the present example (from the collection of Harish K Patel, see http://silverfromindia1850-1920.blogspot.com/p/indiansilver-from-kutch-gujarat.html). Raghavji also uses the same motif on a drawing for a two-handled cup and cover which also includes similar animal scenes to those here, which are a recurring theme in the work of both Mawjee silversmiths. Another example, perhaps more comparably to this hotwater jug, is a wine-jug by Oomersee from the collection of the British Museum (museum number 2011,3014.74).

Cartier and Rock Crystal
With an esteemed reputation dating from 1847, the now-international Cartier brand requires little introduction. Innovative in their use of materials and metals (their pioneering use of platinum in jewellery is well documented), and forward thinking in design, some exceptional items have been created in the Cartier workshops.
By 1900 Cartier was no longer “just” a retailer, and in the early 20th century had three branches: in Paris, London and New York, each with a manufacturing arm as well as the retail store. With Royal clients alongside the wealthy and the well-known, the brand name was (and is) synonymous with style and quality.
In the early 1900’s Cartier pieces often featured tassels, wreaths and swags, details derived from jewellery from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. In stark contrast were their pieces that would come to be known as Art Deco, with clean geometric lines, simple settings and, towards the 1930’s, monochromatic hues. Cartier had a trend in combining diamonds and pearls when elevated with the fine settings that platinum allowed, created fluidity of movement and a light, elegant feel.
Cartier embraced the use of pearls with subtle hues – as with the light grey pearls in this lot. Using alternating rows of grey and cream pearls is in keeping with the monochromatic look popular at the time.
Rock crystal became a more popular material within the firm’s designs from about 1910, and carved or engraved pieces were used increasingly frequently. However simply polished pieces as seen here were also incorporated to great effect.
Onyx or black enamel were first listed in Cartier’s records as being used alongside diamonds in the first decade of the 20th century. Originally it appears that they were paired for use as mourning jewellery and as time went on became a popular combination for daytime jewellery.

Jewellery
Coloured Stones. It should be noted that gemstones are often treated to improve their appearance. Heating, for instance, can intensify the colour or transparency of sapphires and rubies, whilst oiling can improve the clarity of emeralds. The international jewellery trade generally accepts these methods. Once heated, the colour enhancement is permanent, though there may be some effect on the durability of the gemstone in question. Once a gemstone has been oiled, the process may need to be repeated in the future to maintain the clarity.
Certificates. Some lots are accompanied by gemmological certificates which give an opinion on some or all of the gemstones included in that particular piece. These certificates may have been obtained by Tennants or supplied by vendors. It is important to note that the content of these certificates is not guaranteed by Tennants and we cannot be held responsible for any disagreement over the content of certificates after the sale or for a retrospective change in opinion by the providers of any of the certificates.
Watches
All Lots are sold as seen, and the absence of any reference to the condition of a watch does not imply the lot is in good condition and without defects, repairs or restorations. Most watches have been repaired in the course of their normal lifetime and may now incorporate parts not original to them. We do not undertake any inspection of any watches prior to any Sale. We make no representation or warranty that any watch is in working order. As watches often contain fine and complex mechanisms, Prospective Buyers should be aware that a general service, change of battery or further repair work, for which they are solely responsible, may be necessary.
