A RARE VICTORIAN SILVER TABLE-SERVICE BY WILLIAM THEOBALDS; JOHN SAMUEL HUNT; GEORGE ADAMS; FRANCIS HIGGINS OR JOHN EDWARD BINGHAM, LONDON, 1840 TO 1877, EACH FURTHER MARKED WITH BRITISH GOVERNMENT BROAD ARROW Admiralty pattern, most pieces engraved with a crest, comprising: 6 table-spoons 15 table-forks 8 dessert-spoons 12 dessert-forks 8 teaspoons 3 sauce-ladles 111oz 14dwt, 3,475gr (52) Provenance: by family tradition acquired, either as a gift or a purchase, from the Royal Navy by Rear-Admiral Hugh Webb Faulkner (1900-1969) and by descent. The crest, ‘upon a pheon a plover close, holding in the beak an ear of wheat’, is that of Allsopp, as borne by the Barons Hindlip. Henry Allsop (1811-1887) was created Baronet in 1880 and 1st Baron Hindlip in 1886 so the absence of an engraved coronet on the present service doesn’t rule out the crest engraved on the present service belonging to them. The family however doesn’t have any obvious naval connections so it is equally possible the crest has been assumed by another family in this instance. The rare pattern, depicting a fouled anchor below the Royal crown and within scrolls, was first made for use of Royal Naval officers in the early 19th century, with the earliest known extant pieces being hallmarked for 1838. As the present service shows it was produced by various makers through the 19th century, apparently being discontinued around the First World War. Ian Pickford notes that serving officers at the time were allowed to purchase services, though pieces are still in use in Royal Navy messes (I. Pickford, Silver Flatware English, Irish and Scottish 1660-1980, Woodbridge, 1995, p.98. £3,000-5,000 www.tennants.co.uk

2089 A PAIR OF WILLIAM IV OLD SHEFFIELD PLATE WINE-COOLERS, COLLARS AND LINERS APPARENTLY UNMARKED, CIRCA 1830 tapering melon fluted and on foliage and flower cast base, with openwork scroll and rocaille handles, engraved with a coat-of-arms, with conforming collar and liner 26cm high (2) Provenance: Almost certainly Sir Richard Brooke, 6th Baronet of Norton Priory (1785-1865). Tennants, 18 November 2017, lot 535. The arms are those of Brooke, almost certainly for Sir Richard Brooke, 6th Baronet of Norton Priory (1785-1865). There have been six baronetcies created for families with the name Brooke, with the first created in December 1662 for Henry Brooke of Norton Priory, Chester (d.1664). Despite being a Parliamentarian during the Civil War Henry was created 1st Baronet of Norton Priory by Charles II. The coat-of-arms on the present pair of wine-coolers show only the coat-of-arms of Brooke without a further clue to indicate exactly who they are engraved for but it seems most likely they were made for Sir Richard Brooke, 6th Baronet of Norton Priory (1785-1865). He was the son of Sir Richard, 5th Baronet, who died in 1795 so the arms certainly cannot relate to him. As the 6th Baronet didn’t die until 1865 it would also seem unlikely that the arms are those of his son, another Richard, who succeeded him as 7th Baronet. Sir Richard matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford in 1804 and was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Laws in 1810. He acted as Sheriff of Cheshire in 1817 and 1818. He married, in 1809, Harrriot, daughter of Sir Foster Cunliffe, 3rd Baronette and Harriet Kinloch, in 1809 and together had eight children. On his death in 1865 he was succeeded by his eldest son, and sixth child as 7th Baronet. £700-1,000

A Victorian Cake Plate, painted after Landseer
The inscription reads ‘To Amos Ingham Esq MD in Remembrance of True Friendship and the Good Professional Services Rendered to Her Father the Late Rich’d Shackleton Butterfield Esq JP DL During Many Years and with Best Wishes of the Viscountess Montauban, Woodlands May 15 1873’. Richard Shackleton Butterfield, along with his brothers, was a successful mill owner with transatlantic ambitions, having opened offices in Philadelphia and later New York. Sadly his desire to build a family fortune was to leave him with a reputation as a cruel man. Having purchased Bridgehouse Mill and Woodlands house in Haworth Butterfield was to demand long working hours from his staff and require them to work two loops simultaneously. This was something of a common practice at the mills in Haworth and a practice which was to attract the attention of the government, after a significant lobbying effort by Patrick Brontë, father of Charlotte. This resulted in the sending of Benjamin Herschel Babbage to Haworth in 1849 to make an inspection. His report led to significant improvements, though Butterfield was not pleased and continued to oppose any changes to improve the lot of his workers. This resulted in a strike in 1852 which Butterfield tried to quash by having the ringleaders arrested and brought to court. The proceedings didn’t go in his favour and so he was forced to back down and the men were freed. It would seem that both Patrick and Charlotte Brontë were pleased with this outcome with Charlotte noting in a letter to her father “.... I cannot help enjoying Mr Butterfield’s defeat - and yet in one sense this a bad state of things - calculated to make working people both discontented and insubordinate.” (M. Smith, Editor, Charlotte Brontë, Selected Letters, 2010, p. 204). Dr Amos Ingham (1827-1889) was a Haworth surgeon from 1852 and, besides administering to Richard Shackleton Butterworth saw to Charlotte Brontë in February and March 1855 during her last illness and signed her death certificate. A portrait of him is in the Brontë Parsonage Museum. The original version of Bolton Abbey in the Olden Times remains in the collection of the Duke of Devonshire at Chatsworth, having been painted by Sir Edwin Henry Landseer in 1834. The image must have been immediately popular as by 1836 Samuel Cousins produced an engraving of the original which was to be widely circulated with examples in the Victoria and Albert Museum (E.277-1970) and in the Royal Collection (RCIN 815137), to name but two. The image was also copied in oil such as an example in the Mercer Art gallery and another at the Beacon Museum in Whitehaven. While making prints or copies after an original painting was relatively commonplace in the 19th century it was more unusual for the same to happen with the decorative arts. The image chased on the present jug is immediately recognisable as being after Landseer, as is the painting on the Victorian papier-mâché cake plate illustrated above. With non-transferable standard ivory exemption declaration number 56WBCGNS. £700-1,000

Sir Edward Blakeney (1778-1868)
2103 A VICTORIAN SILVER FOUR-LIGHT CANDELABRUM BY JOHN MORTIMER AND JOHN SAMUEL HUNT, LONDON, 1840 on tricorn base with three shell, foliage and scroll-cast feet, the sides similarly applied, one of the plain sides engraved with an inscription, the baluster stem with foliage and flowers on a matted ground, the detachable arms with three scrolling foliage-cast branches, each with tapering fluted socket with reeded nozzle, with a further detachable central branch with conforming socket and nozzle 63.5cm high, 138oz 2dwt, 4,295gr The inscription reads ‘Presented to Lt General The Right Honble Sir E. Blakeney K.C.B & G.C.H. by a Few Friends Dublin 1841’. Sir Edward Blakeney, G.C.B., G.C.H. (1778-1868) was born in Newcastle in March of 1778, the fourth son of Major William Blakeney (d.1804) and his wife Sarah Shields. Sir Edward’s father served in the British Army at the Battle of Rheinberg, and later the Battle of Bunker Hill during the American War of Independence. He was wounded during both battles and so retired in 1779. He was to go on to sit in the Irish House of Commons. Given his father’s military background it was perhaps inevitable that Sir Edward, as he would later come to be known, would follow him into the British Army, first with the 8th Light Dragoons and shortly thereafter the 121st Regiment of Foot where he was promoted to lieutenant and then a captain of the 99th Regiment of Foot. Having first joined in 1794 by 1809 he had seen action in Dutch Guiana, Santo Domingo as well as the Battles of Alkmaar, Castricum and Copenhagen. Having been promoted to lieutenant colonel by 1808 he was involved in the capture of Martinique and was garrisoned in Nova Scotia. Despite those successes, he was probably most known for his services during the Peninsular War when he joined Sir Arthur Wellesley, late Duke of Wellington, in Spain in 1810. During his time in Spain he commanded his troops at numerous battles and was injured on at least two occasions, first in the thigh during the Battle of Albuera and later at the Siege of Badajoz. In recognition of his services he was promoted to Colonel in 1814 and appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath, as noted on the present candelabrum, the following year. Sir Edward continued his rise through the ranks of the British Army, eventually ending up as Field Marshall in 1862. In 1836 he was sent to Ireland as Commander-in-Chief and slightly later Lord Justice of Ireland. The same year he was also appointed a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Guelphic Order. Back England he was to go on become Governor of the Royal Hospital Chelsea by 1856. He had married Maria Gardiner, the daughter of Colonel Gardiner of the East India Company in 1814 and they were to retire, childless, to Richmond House in Twickenham. £5,000-8,000

2126 A VICTORIAN SILVER TRAY BY WILLIAM GEORGE CONNELL, LONDON, 1900 shaped oblong, with Art Nouveau style decoration 46cm wide, 50oz 10dwt, 1,571gr Provenance: Fellows and Sons Limited, Birmingham, 10 December 2012, lot 6. The history of the William George Connell can be traced back to 1817 when the firm was recorded at 22 Myddleton Street, Clerkenwell. In the early years, the company would seem to have been mostly involved in the sale of watches, by 1846 for example, being recorded as chronometer and watchmaker to the Royal Navy. It was apparently his son, William George, whose mark appears on the present tray, and his grandson George Lawrence Connell who were to champion the sale of Art Nouveau style, or, as recorded in 1902 on the death of William George Connell ‘... one of the pioneers of modern artistic silverware.’ (a quoted J. Culme, The Directory of Gold and Silversmiths, Jewellers and Allied Traders 1838-1914, p.94). Besides silver marked with the distinctive Connell mark of WGC mark in a trefoil the company sold the work by others, including items designed or made for example by Kate Harris, William Hutton and Sons and later A. E. Jones. £1,200-1,800

2161 AN ELIZABETH II SILVER TABLE-SERVICE BY VINERS, SHEFFIELD, 1966 AND 1967, DESIGNED BY GERALD BENNEY with Fiddle pattern handle, the knives with tapering handles, each with a double row of spirals, comprising: 12 table-forks, 1967 12 soup-spoons, 1966 12 dessert-forks, 1966 12 dessert-spoons, 1967 and the following with stainless steel blades and filled handles: 12 table-knives, 1966 12 cheese-knives, 1966 with twelve original Viners cardboard boxes and twelve ‘Treasure Wrap’ anti-tarnish wraps 92oz 1dwt, 2,862gr (72) As discussed by G. Hughes, Gerald Benney Goldsmiths The Story of Fifty Years at the Bench, Alfriston, 1998, pp. 155-159, Gerald Benney was an astute businessman. Perhaps nothing provides better evidence of this than the royalty he negotiated with Viners of Sheffield, for whom he designed between 1957 and 1969. While he was earning a salary of some £2,000 a year the 1.5% royalty brought him in as much as £60,000 annually, earning him more than the chairman of the company. Besides designing flatware, as well as other items, for Viners he involved himself in improving manufacturing techniques to avoid the wastage which had previously been the norm in the industry. The bulk of his commission was from four stainless steel flatware patterns, Chelsea, Studio, Design 70 and Sable. Each was typified by shallow bowls which allowed automatic robot polishing. The present pattern, which is sometime referred to as Guild, the name inscribed on the boxes in which the present service is contained, doesn’t seem to be among the published patterns, but instead seems to be a variation of Design 70, which has the same truncated Fiddle pattern handle but which is lacking the distinctive swirls which make the present pattern stand out. £2,000-3,000 www.tennants.co.uk

The reference 105.003 is a rare example which was only in production for around three years from 1963 and then superseded by the ‘professional’ reference version 105.012 which, famously, was worn on the moon landing in 1969. Typical features of the “Ed White” pre-moon Speedmaster are the straight lugs, no crown guards and just signed on the dial Omega Speedmaster without the professional signature. This example also has the original dot over 90 tachymeter bezel and original Omega bracelet. £7,000-9,000 82

Condition Reports We are happy to provide Condition Reports to Prospective Buyers, but would welcome your request as soon as possible, preferably at least 48 hours before the Day of Sale. A Condition Report is an honest expression of our opinion, not a statement of fact and is provided as a service to the Seller. We accept no liability for the opinions expressed in any Condition Report. Caveat Emptor The principle of caveat emptor applies to the sale of all goods sold at auction by us. Furthermore, we have no control over the condition of any item offered for sale. Additional Images Requests for additional images of items in the sale can made up to 48 hours before the Day of Sale. AML Due Diligence We conduct appropriate Due Diligence checks to comply with current Anti Money Laundering regulations for any buyer exceeding the threshold of £8,000. We reserve the right to withhold the purchased lots until such checks have been completed. Agency We act as agents for the Seller, whose details remain confidential. If you buy at auction your contract is with the Seller, not us. Jewellery Coloured Stones. It should be noted that gemstones are often treated to improve their appearance. Heating, for instance, can intensify the colour or transparency of sapphires and rubies, whilst oiling can improve the clarity of emeralds. The international jewellery trade generally accepts these methods. Once heated, the colour enhancement is permanent, though there may be some effect on the durability of the gemstone in question. Once a gemstone has been oiled, the process may need to be repeated in the future to maintain the clarity. Certificates. Some lots are accompanied by gemmological certificates which give an opinion on some or all of the gemstones included in that particular piece. These certificates may have been obtained by Tennants or supplied by vendors. It is important to note that the content of these certificates is not guaranteed by Tennants and we cannot be held responsible for any disagreement over the content of certificates after the sale or for a retrospective change in opinion by the providers of any of the certificates.
Watches All Lots are sold as seen, and the absence of any reference to the condition of a watch does not imply the lot is in good condition and without defects, repairs or restorations. Most watches have been repaired in the course of their normal lifetime and may now incorporate parts not original to them. We do not undertake any inspection of any watches prior to any Sale. We make no representation or warranty that any watch is in working order. As watches often contain fine and complex mechanisms, Prospective Buyers should be aware that a general service, change of battery or further repair work, for which they are solely responsible, may be necessary. CITES Regulations/Ivory Act 2018 CITES-restricted items and Ivory Exempt items will be accompanied by a current CITES Article 10 licence/Ivory Exemption Declaration where applicable and the licence/exemption declaration number will be displayed within the original catalogue description (required by UK law). Both CITES Article 10 licences and Ivory Exemption Declarations are non-transferable and buyers must apply for a new Article 10 licence/Ivory Exemption Declaration in their name if they wish to sell to a third party. It is the sole responsibility of the buyer and/or contracted shipping agent to have in place the correct CITES re-export and import licences into the buyer’s chosen country before shipping can be undertaken. CITES regulations are given on www.ukcites.gov.uk or may be obtained from: The Animal and Plant Health Agency Centre for International Trade Horizon House Deanery Road Bristol BL1 5AH
