The Harlequin Sale comprises the extraordinary collection of the late Michael Raw of Sedbergh, who filled his home with an exuberant array of art and design.
Michael Raw was an erudite, compelling, and muchloved history teacher at Sedbergh School, remembered for his charm, warmth, and wit as well as his old-fashioned eccentricities. Michael was educated at Haberdashers School and Queens College, Cambridge and went on to write for the Cambridge Footlights and Not the Nine O’Clock News as well as playing rugby for the Harlequins before dedicating his life to teaching. At Sedbergh, he tempered his erudite teachings with entertaining and gruesome detail, creating an enviable level of engagement from his pupils. He also taught rugby with great enthusiasm and involved himself in all aspects of school life, including writing and performing in the school’s sketch show A Kick in the Stalls.
Michael was a generous, entertaining and warm host who welcomed many colleagues and former pupils to his home. An evening at one of his successive Sedbergh residences was a richly sought after prize, particularly as it came with viewing rights to Michael’s extensive collection of historic artefacts, modern art and an enviable library. Conversation was lively as Michael brought together friends from different aspects of his life, regaling them with stories of his work on radio and television comedy, and name dropping with ease.
During a stint playing for the Harlequins Michael gained what he described as his ‘cauliflower ears’ as well as a keen sense of sportsmanship. At Sedbergh he coached the First XV from 1987-1991 and later moved to the B1 team with whom he stuck for much of his career.
Sedbergh has benefitted from Michael’s writing and attention to literary detail over many decades, first during his time as editor of the Sedberghian and
latterly as Michael was appointed to chronicle various aspects of the school’s history. Prior to retiring from teaching Michael was invited to write ‘Thread of Gold’, a history of Sedbergh School Football Club. He approached this with his trademark thoroughness, reading every historic issue of the Sedberghian magazine, Captains’ minute book, Governors’ minute book and personal memoir available.
In recent years Michael undertook the substantial role of school historian, seeking to research and write a new history of the school in time for the 500th anniversary. Michael’s diligence and integrity made him the perfect person for this role. He sought to accurately represent the community he served while ensuring that the individuals involved were portrayed compassionately. Michael’s portrayal weaves the events of school life into the context of national and international history in a manner that elevates the book beyond the ambitions of many coffee table school histories. Michael died whilst writing the final chapter. The completist in him would have been slightly frustrated with the premature ending to his career as a writer but the comedian in him would have chuckled at the off beat timing.
Vivid colour ties the whole collection together, exemplified by his collection of quirky works of art and harlequin themed objects, inspired by his childhood in Africa, many travels and years playing for the legendary Harlequins rugby team.
We are grateful to Katy de la Riviere, Archivist at Sedbergh School for assisting with this tribute.

Initialled and numbered 6/15, resin, 140cm high
Awarded her undergraduate degree in Fine Art from Sunderland University in 1995, Beth Carter is a sculptor and visual artist who focuses on depictions of fantasy and mythology. Carter’s work is showcased in collections all around the world, with her award-winning charcoal drawings and sculptures in galleries such as Muskegon Museum of Art, Michigan, the New Salem Museum, Massachusetts, and the Musee d’Art Classique de Mougins, France. Carter’s work contains extraordinary yet digestible narratives that allow viewers to observe the mystical world of her imagination. Wosene Worke Kosrof (b.1950) Ethiopian Word Play
Signed, oil on canvas, 127cm by 122.5cm
Born in 1950, Wosene Worke Kosrof trained at Addis Ababa School of Fine Arts in Ethiopia. There he completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts with distinction in 1972, followed by a Master of Fine Arts at Howard University of Washinton DC in 1980. Kosrof claims to be one of the first Ethiopian artists and sculptors to use a script form called Fiedel, native to Ethiopia and close to his Amharic core. His work is defined by his use of this scripture; dissecting, elongating, and distorting it. Other influences include jazz, with its universal appreciation as an improvised, flowing form of expression. He states that this improvisation is how he works, as he does not plan or sketch prior to using the acrylic he favours. He describes his works as visual compositions and continues to work in California, where he lives.

Jon Buck (b.1951)
“Dancing to Time”
Signed and numbered 2/10, enamelled bronze, 53cm high
Born in 1950, Jon Buck studied at Nottingham and Manchester Art Schools. By 1983 he had become both a Fellow in Sculpture at Cheltenham Art College and the first member of Thamesdown Borough Council as an artist. He is also a member of the Royal West of England Academy, and his work is regularly exhibited in both private and public collections including Gallery Pangolin, London. Jon Buck’s works are considered forms of visual poetry, described as “songs without words” intended to capture both the feeling of elation and the resilience of the human spirit. Buck’s works titled “Without Words” were created in response to a poem
“Everyone Sang” by the anti-war poet Siegfried Sassoon:
“Everyone suddenly burst out singing;
And I was filled with such delight
As prisoned birds must find in freedom, Winging wildly across the white Orchards and dark-green fields; on-on and out of sight Everyone voice suddenly lifted;
And the beauty came like a setting sun: My heart was shaken with tear; and horror
Drifted away … O, but Everyone Was a bird; and the song was wordless; the singing will never be done.”
Buck said that Sassoon’s words resonated with him, expressing “what it is to be free and alive.” For him, “it is the end of the poem that is most crucial: it becomes a timeless declaration of the resilience of the human spirit – feelings beyond words”, a sentiment that inspires his recent works.

Ablade Glover was born in 1934 in Accra, Ghana. He began his career by completing a teacher training course which granted him a scholarship to study textiles at London Central School of Art and Design, where he trained to work at a textile factory planned in Ghana. However, with his degree complete and the factory not yet built, he was sent to teach at a local art college instead. This led to a further scholarship which allowed him to study at Newcastle upon Tyne until 1965, where he found his love for the palette knife that features heavily in his works. He continued his education at Kent State University where he was awarded his master’s degree, followed by a PHD from Ohio State University. He then taught for two decades the College of Art in the University of Kumasi, eventually gaining the title of Associate Professor. His artistic style is described as to “[swirl] between abstraction and realism”, typically within urban landscapes.

All items in this catalogue that are marked with “•” are potentially qualifying items, and the royalty charge (set out below) will apply if the Hammer Price is more than the UK sterling equivalent of €1,000. The royalty charge will be added to purchase invoices, and must be paid before items can be cleared. All royalty charges are paid to either the Design and Artists Copyright Society (“DACS”) or the Artists’ Collecting Society (“ACS”) by the auctioneers, and no handling costs or additional fees with respect to these changes will be retained by the auctioneer.
From 14 February 2006 United Kingdom art market professionals (which includes auctioneers) are required to collect a royalty payment for all works of art that have been produced by living artists, and those who have died within the last 70 years. This payment is calculated on qualifying works of art which are sold for a Hammer Price more that the UK sterling equivalent of €1,000 (the UK sterling equivalent will fluctuate in line with prevailing exchange rates). It is the responsibility of the Buyer to acquaint themselves with the actual Euro to UK sterling exchange rate on the Day of Sale. The actual qualifying threshold will be calculated by the “Artist’s Resale Right Service Hub” based on the “European Central Bank” reference rate published at 2.15pm on the Day of Sale and can be found on www.dacs.org.uk
The royalty charge for qualifying items which achieve a Hammer Price of more than the UK sterling equivalent of €1,000 is as follows:
Up to €50,000 – 4%
€50,000.01 to €200,000 – 3%
€200,000.01 to €350,000 – 1%
€350,000.01 to €500,000 – 0.5%
Exceeding €500,000 – 0.25%
For further information please visit www.dacs.org.uk or www.artistscollectingsociety.org. There is no VAT payable on this royalty charge.
Payment is accepted online via our website. Card payments where the card holder is not present will only be accepted for transactions up to £500.
Payment can be made and purchases collected during the auction. All accounts must be settled within 14 days of the sale. Accounts not paid within 14 days will automatically be subject to an interest charge of 5% above base rate from the day of sale.
All purchases must be collected from our Leyburn offices, unless stated otherwise, within seven days of the Sale (Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5.00pm).
