2190 A George II and a George III Silver Tea-Caddy, in Rosewood Caddy, The First Apparently Unmarked, Possibly 1750s, The Second by William Troby, London, 1814, The Rosewood Caddy Circa 1814 the silver tea-caddies each oblong, the sides engraved with foliage on a matted ground and within trelliswork, the hinged covers similarly engraved and with stepped bezel engraved with scrolls and cinqfoils, each with lock plate and lead-lined, in fitted oblong rosewood caddy with foliage-cast brass handle and with cut-glass bowl the caddy 30.5cm wide, the silver tea-caddies each 11.5cm high, gross weight of silver 31oz 15dwt, 988gr (3)

2190 These distinctive tea-caddies are very much in the style of known examples produced by Edward Wakelin in the 1750s. Examples, though with slightly more elaborate engraving, include a pair, along with a sugar-box, which are marked for London, 1758 and sold from an Important Washington D.C. collection (Christie’s, New York, 7 April 2021, lot 64) and a single example, marked for 1752, which was ordered from Wakelin by Sir Edward Winnington, Bt. (Bonhams, London, 15 March 2002, lot 211). The latter example is listed in the records of Edward Wakelin, known as ‘Edward Wakelin’s Gentleman’s Ledger’ which are preserved at the Victoria and Albert Museum and provide a fascinating record of silver production in the 18th century. This form of caddy was to continue being produced into the 1760s by other silversmiths such as Pierre Gillois, for example one marked for 1768 now in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum (museum number M.320-1962) and a pair of gilt examples (A. Stevens, et al., The Story of British Tea Chests and Caddies, Woodbridge, 2022, p. 310, fig 17.21).

The later iterations of the form lack the stepped bezel on the hinged cover which would seem to have been a feature of the earlier Edward Wakelin examples, suggesting that the present examples are more closely related to the examples from the 1750s, rather than the later examples. The difference in the actual weight of the unmarked example compared to the engraved scratch weight, 15oz versus 13oz 7dwt respectively, is probably explained by the existence of the original lead lining inside the body. This lining is very likely that which was applied when the caddy was created. The ledger entry for the example made for Sir Edward Winnington includes a charge of £3 3s for ‘making the lock, graving the mosaick [sic] and lyning [sic]’, along with the charge of £6 1s for the making of the caddy itself and a further charge of 10s for making a case. While we normally associate these caddies as being made in pairs this last charge is interesting as it shows that this was not always the case. Winnington opted for a single, cased, caddy and presumably the original owner of the present example also purchased a single example. It can only be assumed that the greater use of different types of tea by the 19th century necessitated the creation, in 1814, of a matching silver caddy which was cased, along with the cut-glass mixing bowl and all contained in the present brass-bound rosewood caddy. £600-800 2190 (alterate view) www.tennants.co.uk

2245 A Victorian Silver ‘Manchester New Race Course’ Badge or Token, by Isaac Simmons, Sheffield, 1846 oval, the front engraved ‘Manchester New Race Course Association’ on a garter and further engraved ‘Established 1847’ within, the back engraved ‘Mr John Greenwood’ 50mm wide, 18dwt, 29gr Various venues were used for horse racing around Manchester from at least the middle of the 17th century, though none of the courses were actually in Manchester itself. The course for which the present token or badge is engraved was on a site known as Castle Irwell, having been leased from the Member of Parliament and owner of the Pendleton Colliery John Fitzgerald. The course was located on an area of flat land near of the river Irwell and was described as being ‘damp and boggy, prone to mist and the going was heavy’. There was a 1000 seat stand which offered a view of the entire course. The initial lease expired after 20 year and the Fitzgerald’s son, who had now inherited the estate, declined to renew it and so the course was closed and moved to New Barns, Weaste. The John Greenwood whose name is engraved on the reverse is very probably the one born in 1788 and who is known for being a transport entrepreneur and a keeper of a toll-gate in Pendleton, on the Manchester to Liverpool turnpike. He was to go on to purchase a horse and carriage to be used for an omnibus service between Pendleton and Manchester, a service which did not require prior booking. He died in 1851 and left a successful business to his son. Another example of this badge, though without a name engraved on the reverse, was sold at Noonans, London, 13 December 2016, lot 3218. £250-350

2246 A Victorian Silver Vinaigrette, by Alfred Taylor, Birmingham, 1861 oval, the hinged cover engraved with a view of the International Exhibition of 1862, opens to reveal a flower and foliage pierced and engraved grille, the base engine-turned and centring a vacant shield 47mm wide, 13dwt, 20gr The 1862 International Exhibition opened in London in May and was visited by some six million visitors by the time it closed in November. It had been the original intention that the building, on a site of what is now the Natural History Museum, would be kept. Unfortunately the government of the day declined to fund the purchase so the structure was instead dismantled with the many of its constituent materials being used in the construction of the Alexander Palace. The present example is almost certainly engraved after a design published by A. Park of 7 Leonard Street, Finsbury Park and interestingly varies from the final design, presumably as it, and the vinaigrette, were produced in advance of the completion of the structure and in anticipation of a great demand when the exhibition opened. BUYERS’ INFORMATION Buyer’s Premium

Absentee Bidding

A Buyer’s Premium of 24% on the first £999,999 of the Hammer Price and 20% on the amount thereafter, plus VAT, is payable on each lot.

Whilst reasonable endeavours will be made to execute absentee bidding up to the Day of Sale, Tennants will not be liable for any default or neglect in connection with this service. All such arrangements therefore are made entirely at the Prospective Buyer’s risk.

Condition Reports We are happy to provide Condition Reports to Prospective Buyers, but would welcome your request as soon as possible, preferably at least 48 hours before the Day of Sale. A Condition Report is an honest expression of our opinion, not a statement of fact and is provided as a service to the Seller. We accept no liability for the opinions expressed in any Condition Report.

VAT Value added tax or any equivalent tax chargeable in the UK or elsewhere. AML Due Diligence

Caveat Emptor The principle of caveat emptor applies to the sale of all goods sold at auction by us. Furthermore, we have no control over the condition of any item offered for sale. Additional Images Requests for additional images of items in the sale can made up to 48 hours before the Day of Sale.

We conduct appropriate Due Diligence checks to comply with current Anti Money Laundering regulations for any buyer exceeding the threshold of £8,000. We reserve the right to withhold the purchased lots until such checks have been completed. Agency We act as agents for the Seller, whose details remain confidential. If you buy at auction your contract is with the Seller, not us.

Online Bidding We offer an online bidding service via our own platform Tennants Live Bidding at www.tennants.co.uk. Items purchased via this platform will be subject to an additional 1.5% commission charge plus VAT at the prevailing rate. We also offer online bidding via www.the-saleroom.com for prospective buyers who cannot attend the sale. Items bought via this platform will be subject to an additional 4.95% commission charge plus VAT. By completing registration on www.the-saleroom.com and providing your credit/bank card details and unless alternative arrangements are agreed with us, you; (a) authorise Tennants, if they so wish, to charge the credit/bank card given in part of full payment, including all fees, for items successfully purchased in the auction via www.the-saleroom.com; and (b) confirm that you are authorised to provide these credit/bank details to Tennants through www.the-saleroom.com and agree that Tennants are entitled to permit the shipping of the goods to the card holder and card holder address provided in fulfilment of the sale.. We do not accept any liability for any losses, however arising, as a result of a prospective buyer’s use of www.thesaleroom.com. Use of www.the-saleroom.com is subject to separate terms and conditions which do not form part of these conditions. Telephone Bidding Requests for telephone bidding must be registered at least one hour prior to the close of the View Day. We will not accept requests on the Day of Sale. Telephone Lines are booked on a first-come, first-served basis and are subject to a minimum lot value of £500 for Fine Art Sales and £200 for all other sales.

Jewellery Coloured Stones. It should be noted that gemstones are often treated to improve their appearance. Heating, for instance, can intensify the colour or transparency of sapphires and rubies, whilst oiling can improve the clarity of emeralds. The international jewellery trade generally accepts these methods. Once heated, the colour enhancement is permanent, though there may be some effect on the durability of the gemstone in question. Once a gemstone has been oiled, the process may need to be repeated in the future to maintain the clarity. Certificates. Some lots are accompanied by gemmological certificates which give an opinion on some or all of the gemstones included in that particular piece. These certificates may have been obtained by Tennants or supplied by vendors. It is important to note that the content of these certificates is not guaranteed by Tennants and we cannot be held responsible for any disagreement over the content of certificates after the sale or for a retrospective change in opinion by the providers of any of the certificates. Watches All Lots are sold as seen, and the absence of any reference to the condition of a watch does not imply the lot is in good condition and without defects, repairs or restorations. Most watches have been repaired in the course of their normal lifetime and may now incorporate parts not original to them. We do not undertake any inspection of any watches prior to any Sale. We make no representation or warranty that any watch is in working order. As watches often contain fine and complex mechanisms, Prospective Buyers should be aware that a general service, change of battery or further repair work, for which they are solely responsible, may be necessary.

CITES Regulations/Ivory Act 2018 CITES-restricted items and Ivory Exempt items will be accompanied by a current CITES Article 10 licence/Ivory Exemption Declaration where applicable and the licence/exemption declaration number will be displayed within the original catalogue description (required by UK law). It is the sole responsibility of the buyer and/or contracted shipping agent to have in place the correct CITES re-export and import licences into the buyer’s chosen country before shipping can be undertaken.
