2179 2179 A THREE-PIECE CHINESE EXPORT SILVER TEA-SERVICE WITH CHINESE CHARACTER ARTISAN MARK FOR YI TAI, RETAILED BY LUEN WO, SHANGHAI, LATE 19TH CENTURY each piece of gourd or melon form, applied with chrysanthemums and foliage, with bamboo-cast handle, comprising: a teapot, the hinged cover with realistic melon or gourd stem-cast finial, the handle ivory-insulated; a cream-jug and a sugar-bowl, in fitted wood case with sliding cover; TOGETHER WITH: an associated pair of sugar-tongs, apparently unmarked, applied with prunus flowers and foliage the teapot 24.3cm wide over handle, the case 35.6cm wide, total gross weight 29oz 8dwt, 914gr (4) This service compares in form and decoration to another by Luen Wo which is illustrated by A. von Ferscht in his extensive work Chinese Export Silver 1785-1940 The Definitive Collectors Guide, 4th Edition, 2015, unpaginated. That service is described by von Ferscht as ‘…. Undoubtedly one of the finest late 19th-century Chinese silver sets I’ve ever seen’. He notes that the gourd was associated in Chinese culture with fertility and that such services were given as wedding gifts. The finial on this teapot presents a departure from those on many other Chinese examples, including the above-mentioned example, in that it is more realistically cast than other examples, which are usually more basically realised. The wood box also helps this service to stand out. Of a service by Lao Tian Bao which also includes a box von Ferscht notes ‘Often these cases were as much an art piece as the tea set they contained; this particular one should be perceived as a rare piece of folk art as this box tells us much about the aesthetic mindset of the period.’ Tennants are grateful to Adrien von Ferscht for his assistance in identifying the marks. £1,200-1,800

If you buy at auction your contract is with the Seller, not us. Jewellery Coloured Stones. It should be noted that gemstones are often treated to improve their appearance. Heating, for instance, can intensify the colour or transparency of sapphires and rubies, whilst oiling can improve the clarity of emeralds. The international jewellery trade generally accepts these methods. Once heated, the colour enhancement is permanent, though there may be some effect on the durability of the gemstone in question. Once a gemstone has been oiled, the process may need to be repeated in the future to maintain the clarity. Certificates. Some lots are accompanied by gemmological certificates which give an opinion on some or all of the gemstones included in that particular
piece. These certificates may have been obtained by Tennants or supplied by vendors. It is important to note that the content of these certificates is not guaranteed by Tennants and we cannot be held responsible for any disagreement over the content of certificates after the sale or for a retrospective change in opinion by the providers of any of the certificates. Watches All Lots are sold as seen, and the absence of any reference to the condition of a watch does not imply the lot is in good condition and without defects, repairs or restorations. Most watches have been repaired in the course of their normal lifetime and may now incorporate parts not original to them. We do not undertake any inspection of any watches prior to any Sale. We make no representation or warranty that any watch is in working order. As watches often contain fine and complex mechanisms, Prospective Buyers should be aware that a general service, change of battery or further repair work, for which they are solely responsible, may be necessary. CITES Regulations CITES-restricted items will be accompanied by a current CITES Article 10 licence where applicable and the licence number will be displayed within the original catalogue description (required by UK law). CITES Article 10 licences are non-transferable and buyers must apply for a new Article 10 licence in their name if they wish to sell to a third party. It is the sole responsibility of the buyer and/or contracted shipping agent to have in place the correct CITES re-export and import licences into the buyer’s chosen country before shipping can be undertaken. CITES regulations are given on www.ukcites.gov.uk or may be obtained from: The Animal and Plant Health Agency Centre for International Trade Horizon House Deanery Road Bristol BL1 5AH
