24 Natural History: A Replica Smilodon Skull (†Smilodon populator), a replica skull of Smilodon cat, width 22cm, height 39cm More commonly known as the saber-toothed cat, is member of the Felidae family that went extinct around 10,000 years ago, towards the end of the last ice age. Although, frequently called a “tiger” Smilodon is not actually closely related to modern day tigers, or any modern day cat really. Smilodon fatalis grew up to 5-7 feet long and 3.5 feet high at the shoulder, weighing ~350-600 lbs. Originally, it was thought that the saber teeth were used to grapple and hold on to the prey, however they are not strong enough to do this and would result in a lot of broken teeth. It is now hypothesized that the saber teeth were used to deliver a mortal stab wound while the animal then waited for its prey to die. This skull is moulded from an original saber-toothed cat skull found at the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles California, where more than 2,000 Smilodon individuals have been excavated £80-120 www.tennants.co.uk

367 Taxidermy: An Antique Re-creation of a Great Auk (†Pinguinus impennis), dated 1870, attributed to David Graham (1801-1874), York, Nth Yks, a re-creation of a full mount adult Great Auk with head slightly canted to the right, mounted within a cream painted interior, enclosed within a later single-glass display case, 52cm by 28cm by 64cm Probably one of the oldest known re-creations of the Great Auk produced. Previously offered at auction in 1913 at Stevens Auction Rooms (18201939), 38 King Street, Covent Garden, London, as Lot 319 - “Model of the Great Auk, in glass case”, Stevens Auction Rooms was established by John Crace Stevens (1809-1859), probably in 1831, at 38 King Street, Covent Garden, London. It was concerned with the sale of objects of ‘zoological or scientific interest’. Samuel Stevens (1817-1899), brother of John, joined the company as partner in 1840 and took on the management of the Auction Rooms following John’s death in 1859. Sometime in the late 1890s Samuel’s nephew Henry Stevens became the manager and ran the business until WWII. Post-1859 the business continued to use the name of John Crace Stevens through its advertised sales as if he were still alive. For many years it was the leading London auction house for ethnographic material. Catalogues of many of the ethnographic sales can be found in the library of the British Museum and in the British Library. To include an original letter from G. Salmon dated October 1986 - “During restoration by Mr Sharples at Nottingham Museum, old newspaper, local to York and dated November 1870, was found beneath the false rock. Information obtained from York Museum suggests that the taxidermist may be David Graham (1801-1874). The original case was infested with woodworm and only the glass was retained. The Auk was treated for historic moth attack and re-cased” £3,500-4,500

368 Taxidermy: Rexy The Cockerel (Gallus gallus domesticus), circa 1940-1950, an interesting and unusual Rhode Island cross cockerel which started life as a hen, a full mount stood against a painted faux rock, amidst grasses and fauna, stood upon painted soil groundwork beneath, enclosed within a five-glass table display case, 45cm by 27cm by 56cm, bearing attached newspaper article to interior back glass describing the interesting story - “Rexy’s Got So Much To Crow About, Young Rexy is a rare bird- a bird who began life as a hen but is now a cock and loving every minute of it. “He changed sex but don’t ask me how,” said his owner, Mr Eddie Furse, 62, of Greenfields, Ivybridge, South Devon. “He was laying eggs like my other hens, then one morning he started crowing like any old rooster. He’s certainly got something to crow about”. Mr Furse bought 20 yearling Rhode Island Cross hens about eight months ago. At first they behaved quite normally, all of them laying eggs. “Then Rexy suddenly stopped laying and I noticed gradually he began to walk a bit different, sort a cocky strut like a cockerel,” said Mr Furse. “About three months later he let rip with a cock-a-doodle-doo from the hen house, and he hasn’t stopped since.” Hormones - And that is not the only change in Rexy. Not only does he crow and has developed a comb and tail feathers like a regular cockerel, he is trying his hardest to increase the chicken population. The other 19 hens are all showing signs of wear on their heads and wings, where Rexy has been mating. And some eggs laid by have had blood shots, a sign that they have been fertilised. Mr Furse, who has been farming most of his life, said he had never known of a bird changing sex before. He thought it could be due to hormones the hens may have been given. Mr James Aley, secretary of the Poultry Stock Association in London, said sex-change hens had been known in the past, but cases were rare. It is due to glandular changes and is always hens that change into cocks, he said. When told that Rexy was trying to become a father and had apparently fertilised eggs, he said: “That is very rare” £250-350

Foreward by Carl Church - “I began my first recreation dodo out of curiosity in2006 and was fortunate enough to be able to take measurements from a real dodo skeleton. Working at life size, taking references from books, paintings and other dodos, I began sculpting with modelling wax. When I decided to re-create rather than merely sculpt a dodo, I focused on individual body parts, covering the model with turkey skins and beginning the feathering process from my knowledge of bird anatomy. The dodo gradually took shape, becoming a feathered, life-sized bird £10,000-15,000
