The auctions cover a wealth of collecting areas, from prehistoric giant clam shells and mineral specimens, to Victorian collector’s cabinets and historic full mount pieces. The company has a strong reputation in the field and a global client base, and has been instructed by internationally recognised collectors such as Jacques Henrijean, John Willett and Raymond & Annie Hutchison to sell their collections, as well as the Historical Collection of Natural History and Taxidermy from Hodnet Hall. The department specialises in Victorian and Edwardian taxidermy by the leading firms of the era, including: • Rowland Ward • Van Ingen of Mysore • John Cooper • Peter Spicer Once dismissed as being out of fashion, today Natural History and Taxidermy is appealing to a new generation of collectors and interior designers, appreciated and sought after for both its academic interest and its visual appeal.

INDIAN AND EUROPEAN GAME TROPHIES FROM KILBERRY CASTLE, ARGYLL Kilberry Castle, a baronial tower house on the West Coast of Scotland, was home to a branch of Clan Campbell for over 450 years. Built in 1497, Kilberry has had a long and fascinating history, having been destroyed by an English pirate in 1513, besieged during the Civil War, and almost destroyed by fire in the 18th century before being rebuilt in 1844 by John Campbell. Following the sale of the Castle earlier this year, the family collection of Indian and European Game Trophies will be sold at Tennants. Many of the trophies date from the second half of the 19th century, with rare and historical specimens including Asian Water Buffalos, Astor Markhors, Bengal Tigers, Indian Leopards and Himalayan Tahr.

Mitchell. Hedges. at Marlow. 21st Oct.1905. Wgt 4lbs 8ozs’’, taxidermist’s trade label to interior upper right, various photocopies of book entries to verso of case The angler of this prize catch was the Adventurer and author Frederick Albert Mitchell-Hedges, father to adopted daughter Anna Mitchell-Hedges who famously discovered the Crystal Skull found at Lubaantun, in British Honduras, now Belize. Mitchell-Hedges claimed that she found the skull buried under a collapsed altar inside a temple in Lubaantun, in British Honduras, now Belize. As far as can be ascertained, F.A. Mitchell-Hedges himself made no mention of the alleged discovery in any of his writings on Lubaantun. Others present at the time of the excavation recorded neither the skull’s discovery nor Anna’s presence at the dig. Recent evidence has come to light showing that F.A. Mitchell-Hedges purchased the skull at a Sotheby’s auction in London on October 15, 1943, from London art dealer Sydney Burney. In December 1943, F.A. Michell-Hedges disclosed his purchase of the skull in a letter to his brother, stating plainly that he acquired it from Burney. The skull is made from a block of clear quartz about the size of a small human cranium, measuring some 5 inches (13 cm) high, 7 inches (18 cm) long and 5 inches (13 cm) wide. The lower jaw is detached. In the early 1970s it came under the temporary care of freelance art restorer Frank Dorland, who claimed upon inspecting it that it had been “carved” with total disregard to the natural crystal axis, and without the use of metal tools. Dorland reported being unable to find any tell-tale scratch marks, except for traces of mechanical grinding on the teeth, and he speculated that it was first chiselled into rough form, probably using diamonds, and the finer shaping, grinding and polishing was achieved through the use of sand over a period of 150 to 300 years. He said it could be up to 12,000 years old. Although various claims have been made over the years regarding the skull’s physical properties, such as an allegedly constant temperature of 70 °F (21 °C), Dorland reported that there was no difference in properties between it and other natural quartz crystals. While in Dorland’s care the skull came to the attention of writer Richard Garvin, at the time working at an advertising agency where he supervised Hewlett-Packard’s advertising account. Garvin made arrangements for the skull to be examined at Hewlett-Packard’s crystal laboratories in Santa Clara, California, where it was subjected to several tests. The labs determined only that it was not a composite as Dorland had supposed, but that it was fashioned from a single crystal of quartz. The laboratory test also established that the lower jaw had been fashioned from the same left-handed growing crystal as the rest of the skull. No investigation was made by Hewlett-Packard as to its method of manufacture or dating. As well as the traces of mechanical grinding on the teeth noted by Dorland, Mayanist archaeologist Norman Hammond reported that the holes (presumed to be intended for support pegs) showed signs of being made by drilling with metal. Anna Mitchell-Hedges refused subsequent requests to submit the skull for further scientific testing. £400-600

328 Taxidermy: A Cased Reproduction Yellow Kãkãpõ (Strigops habroptilus), modern, a superbly composed reproduction of a very rare and unusual Yellow Kãkãpõ, a full mount adult perched atop a small tree stump, amidst a natural setting of ferns, grasses and dry fauna, set above painted soil covered groundwork beneath, enclosed within a large five-glass wooden framed table display case, 46cm by 36cm by 57.5cm, The original specimen bird became part of the important nineteenth-century New Zealand ornithologist Walter Lawry Buller’s collection, the Kãkãpõ is one of the rarest birds in the World, with only 201 living specimens known as of 2021, a Yellow Kãkãpõ is known to have occurred only once, captured near Cromarty, Fiordland of New Zealand in 1898 and purchased for Buller’s son, who considered it “the most beautiful thing in the bird line that i have ever seen”, this example was created using various donor specimens including Common Buzzard tail feathers. With CITES Article 10 (non-transferable) licence no. 307908/03 Buzzard Tail Feathers used In 1871, 310 bird specimens were purchased by the Colonial Museum, Wellington, from the important nineteenth-century New Zealand ornithologist Walter Lawry Buller. This was the first large and representative collection of New Zealand birds obtained by the national museum, and it originally included type specimens of 11 species and 23 specimens of birds that are now extinct. Most of this collection (77%) was lost or destroyed in the nineteenth century, and today only 70 of the specimens have been located, with none having the locality and date of collection on the original label. Professional jealousy and a desire to conceal his sources may have been one reason for Buller’s failure to label his specimens at the start of his career, although laxity in recording specimen data was prevalent in New Zealand at the time. Subsequently, the museum was unable to care for these specimens properly, mainly owing to inadequate provision by the government for the museum and its collections. This contrasts with the professional care given to Buller’s later collections of New Zealand birds by Rothschild’s private museum in England, the American Museum of Natural History and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. The latter two museums each have over 500 New Zealand bird specimens from Walter Buller, and these collections are well documented and still largely intact. Together they provide a precious record of the decline of most New Zealand endemic bird species during the late nineteenth century, which resulted from the introduction of mammalian predators. In this paper, Buller’s collections are used to document the decline and extinction of endemic New Zealand birds. Analysis of the ‘Second’ and ‘Third’ Buller collections showed a decline in the proportion of juveniles of extinct and threatened birds, which may indicate that predation of nests and young, rather than of adults, was a key step in the demise of many New Zealand mainland species. Buller’s assertion that he built up three separate collections of New Zealand birds is shown to be incorrect. Each of these three ‘collections’ was selected from Buller’s own collection, which was not fully disposed of until his death. The number of specimens collected was relatively small, and no evidence was found of Buller’s personal collecting, or collecting on his behalf, significantly impacting on any New Zealand bird species. Nor did Buller profit greatly from the sales of his bird collections. £600-800

Frequently working in association with museums, private collectors and educational establishments, highlights of the non-selling exhibition programme include curated displays of treasure from the Bowes Museum and fine art exhibitions including 350 Years of British Art and Light & Shadow, showcasing major loaned works from over twenty museums and numerous private collections. Northern Art is championed too, with frequent selling exhibitions. Recent highlights have included Norman Cornish: Bishop’s Close Street and Sally Arnup: Life in Bronze, both of which were staged in conjunction with the artists’ estates.
