The department specialises in Victorian and Edwardian taxidermy by the leading firms of the era, including:

YOUR SPECIALISTS

Robbie Bright is the specialist in charge of the Natural History and Taxidermy sales programme. He joined Tennants in 2007 as a porter in the saleroom and on the transport team, having previously worked in his family’s fine art and antiques delivery business.

Robbie has had a keen interest in taxidermy and the natural world since childhood. His father was an amateur taxidermist and dealer, and Robbie spent many hours helping with the finishing of cased specimens with naturalistic detail. After assisting in the Natural History and Taxidermy department for several years, Robbie was appointed as a specialist in 2015.

Natural History: A Collection of Replica Great Auk Eggs & Skull, modern, a group of six various hand painted replica Great Auk eggs, mounted upon a dark green baize back drop, surrounding a replica Great Auk skull and beak, enclosed within a cream painted single-glass display case, 45cm by 13.5cm by 45cm

Similar coloured authentic Great Auk eggs were previously collected and owned by notable people including Walter Rothchild, Captain James Cook, John Hancock, and the Earl of Derby, names given to oddly coloured examples include Dufresnes Blotched and Green St Malo. Not since 1844 has a Great Auk (Alca impennis) trod the earth. It was a large flightless sea bird, slightly smaller than a goose and more docile. An expert swimmer and diver, its feet hurt so much that it often lay stretched prone on the rocks. The Auk laid only one egg a year but no two eggs were ever alike in size, shape or colour. Contrary to general belief the Auk was not an Arctic bird. It bred and lived in Iceland and on the islands off Newfoundland where French fishermen were responsible for its extinction. Auk hunting was simplicity itself. A gangplank was laid from a fishing boat to a rock on shore. Inquisitive Auks waddled painfully aboard, were knocked on the head and dumped in the hold

Additional image shows the natural birds which donated the two feathers included within this lot

The Huia birds extinction had two primary causes. The first was rampant overhunting to procure huia skins for mounted specimens and their tail feathers for hat decorations. The second major cause was the widespread deforestation of the lowlands of the North Island by European settlers to create pasture for agriculture. Most of these forests were ancient, ecologically complex primary forests, and huia were unable to survive in regenerating secondary forests. It was already a rare bird before the arrival of Europeans, confined to the Ruahine, Tararua, Rimutaka and Kaimanawa mountain ranges in the south-east of the North Island. It was remarkable for having the most pronounced sexual dimorphism in bill shape of any bird species in the world. The female’s beak was long, thin and arched downward, while the male’s was short and stout, like that of a crow. Males were 45 cm (18 in) long, while females were larger at 48 cm (19 in). The sexes were otherwise similar, with orange wattles and deep metallic, bluish-black plumage with a greenish iridescence on the upper surface, especially about the head. The tail feathers were unique among New Zealand birds in having a broad white band across the tips

CARL CHURCH, TAXIDERMIST (lots 262-268)

Carl Church is an established taxidermist and sculptor based in the North of England, who has built an extraordinary career as a self-employed artist for over 20 years.

As a taxidermist, Carl cemented his reputation as a bird specialist, when he obtained his qualification in bird taxidermy in 2002 with the UK Guild of Taxidermists. Shortly afterwards in 2003 he won Best Professional Bird in the World Taxidermy Championships in America, where he was inspired by the best taxidermists in the world. Competing again in 2005, he not only won Best Professional Bird, but also the prestigious Competitor’s Award in the Professional Division. Throughout a successful career as a taxidermist, Carl has provided specimens for some of the greatest collections of taxidermy throughout Europe, and supplied taxidermy to the Natural History Museum in California.

Expanding his repertoire, in 2008 Carl began providing special effects for the film and advertising industries, and exhibited his work at the Baltic Centre in Gateshead.

One of his major achievements has been to write in 2013 a highly regarded manual on bird taxidermy, which has sold over 6000 copies worldwide. He has appeared in numerous media outlets to talk about his work, and in known for his detailed and naturalistic Dodo recreations, produced for the Great Dodo Exhibition at Kendal Museum in Cumbria.

In 2016 Carl began working in other media, such as soft alloys, wood and resin to produce life-size equestrian carvings and hyper-realistic sculpture. With decades of experience under his belt, Carl continues to produce taxidermy of the highest quality, as well as an intriguing body of sculpture enhanced by his detailed knowledge of anatomy.
