YOUR SPECIALIST

Robbie Bright is the specialist in charge of the Natural History and Taxidermy sales programme. He joined Tennants in 2007 as a porter in the saleroom and on the transport team, having previously worked in his family’s fine art and antiques delivery business.

Robbie has had a keen interest in taxidermy and the natural world since childhood. His father was an amateur taxidermist and dealer, and Robbie spent many hours helping with the finishing of cased specimens with naturalistic detail. After assisting in the Natural History and Taxidermy department for several years, Robbie was appointed as a specialist in 2015

With CITES Article 10 (non-transferable) licence no. 349180/04 - Buzzard Tail Feathers used

In 1871, 310 bird specimens were purchased by the Colonial Museum, Wellington, from the important nineteenth-century New Zealand ornithologist Walter Lawry Buller. This was the first large and representative collection of New Zealand birds obtained by the national museum, and it originally included type specimens of 11 species and 23 specimens of birds that are now extinct. Most of this collection (77%) was lost or destroyed in the nineteenth century, and today only 70 of the specimens have been located, with none having the locality and date of collection on the original label. Professional jealousy and a desire to conceal his sources may have been one reason for Buller’s failure to label his specimens at the start of his career, although laxity in recording specimen data was prevalent in New Zealand at the time. Subsequently, the museum was unable to care for these specimens properly, mainly owing to inadequate provision by the government for the museum and its collections. This contrasts with the professional care given to Buller’s later collections of New Zealand birds by Rothschild’s private museum in England, the American Museum of Natural History and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. The latter two museums each have over 500 New Zealand bird specimens from Walter Buller, and these collections are well documented and still largely intact. Together they provide a precious record of the decline of most New Zealand endemic bird species during the late nineteenth century, which resulted from the introduction of mammalian predators. In this paper, Buller’s collections are used to document the decline and extinction of endemic New Zealand birds. Analysis of the ‘Second’ and ‘Third’ Buller collections showed a decline in the proportion of juveniles of extinct and threatened birds, which may indicate that predation of nests and young, rather than of adults, was a key step in the demise of many New Zealand mainland species. Buller’s assertion that he built up three separate collections of New Zealand birds is shown to be incorrect. Each of these three ‘collections’ was selected from Buller’s own collection, which was not fully disposed of until his death. The number of specimens collected was relatively small, and no evidence was found of Buller’s personal collecting, or collecting on his behalf, significantly impacting on any New Zealand bird species. Nor did Buller profit greatly from the sales of his bird collections.

Natural History: A Collection of Replica Great Auk Eggs & Skull, modern, a group of six various hand painted replica Great Auk eggs, mounted upon a dark green baize backdrop, surrounding a replica Great Auk skull and beak, enclosed within a cream painted single-glass display case, 45cm by 13.5cm by 45cm

Similar coloured authentic Great Auk eggs were previously collected and owned by notable people including Walter Rothchild, Captain James Cook, John Hancock and the Earl of Derby; names given to oddly coloured examples include Dufresnes Blotched and Green St Malo. Not since 1844 has a Great Auk (Alca impennis) trod the earth. It was a large flightless sea bird, slightly smaller than a goose and more docile. An expert swimmer and diver, its feet hurt so much that it often lay stretched prone on the rocks. The Auk laid only one egg a year, but no two eggs were ever alike in size, shape or colour. Contrary to general belief the Auk was not an Arctic bird. It bred and lived in Iceland and on the islands off Newfoundland where French fishermen were responsible for its extinction. Auk hunting was simplicity itself. A gangplank was laid from a fishing boat to a rock on shore. Inquisitive Auks waddled painfully aboard, were knocked on the head and dumped in the hold

Taxidermy: A Re-creation of The Most Celebrated of Great Auk Specimens - Bullocks Papa Westray Auk (†Pinguinus impennis), circa 1870, a period re-creation of a full mount adult Great auk, sat upon a seashore rock, adorned with grit and sea shells, mounted above simulated sea water lapping against the rock, set against an oil painted shoreline backdrop, featuring an anchored sailing ship, a six-oared rowing boat in motion amongst the waves, enclosed within a period ebonised three-glass display case, 58.5cm by 31.5cm by 71.5cm

This cased example of a Great Auk was originally inspired by the most celebrated of Great Auk specimens - Bullocks, Papa Westray Auk. In 1812 William Bullock travelled to the Orkney Islands, specifically the island of Papa Westray to secure a Great Auk for his London museum. Bullock pursued the Auk in a sixoared rowing boat, but the birds speed was so great that the chase was ultimately abandoned. The following year the Auk was shot on rocks near Fowls’ Crag and was sent without haste to Bullock in London. This legend has been recreated within an oil painting upon the back board to this case, depicting the rowboat leaving the mother ship to pursue its prized Auk, (see “The Great Auk”, Errol Fuller 1999). In 1885 Symington Grieve in his book “The Great Auk or Garefowl” wrote “because Great Auk specimens were so hard to obtain (they were extinct by 1844) imitations were being produced using the skins of Guillemots and Great Northern Divers”. This specimen seems to have been reproduced in such a way, circa 1870

Taxidermy: A Cased Pair of Extinct New Zealand Huias (†Heteralocha acutirostris), circa late 19th century, by James E. Whiting, Naturalist 19 Heath St, Hampstead, London, a pair of superb quality full mount adults, the female perched slightly above the male, both perched upon a centrally positioned simulated tree branch, three colourful hummingbirds to the centre, upper right, and left, mounted amidst enhanced natural flora, grasses, ferns and fauna, above painted faux rocks to the groundwork, set against a graduated blue and pink sky backdrop, enclosed within a four-glass table display case, 46.5cm by 21cm by 53cm, bearing taxidermist’s full paper trade label to interior lower right.

The Huia birds’ extinction had two primary causes. The first was rampant overhunting to procure huia skins for mounted specimens and their tail feathers for hat decorations. The second major cause was the widespread deforestation of the lowlands of the North Island by European settlers to create pasture for agriculture. Most of these forests were ancient, ecologically complex primary forests, and huia were unable to survive in regenerating secondary forests.

It was already a rare bird before the arrival of Europeans, confined to the Ruahine, Tararua, Rimutaka and Kaimanawa mountain ranges in the south-east of the North Island. It was remarkable for having the most pronounced sexual dimorphism in bill shape of any bird species in the world. The female’s beak was long, thin and arched downward, while the male’s was short and stout, like that of a crow. Males were 45 cm (18 in) long, while females were larger at 48 cm (19 in). The sexes were otherwise similar, with orange wattles and deep metallic, bluish-black plumage with a greenish iridescence on the upper surface, especially about the head. The tail feathers were unique among New Zealand birds in having a broad white band across the tips. The last confirmed sighting of a huia was in 1907, although there was a credible sighting in 1924
