80 n A Chinese Armorial Porcelain Saucer Dish, circa 1722, painted in famille rose enamels with the arms of Lambert over a scroll with the motto SEGUITANDO. SI. GIUNGE within a floral diaper border and two three-plumed crests and two flowersprays within a foliate rim, 42cm diameter For a discussion of the service see Sanctuary Howard (David) Chinese Armorial Porcelain, pg.206 where it is noted that Sir John Lambert, a wealthy London merchant and director of the South Sea Company, was created baronet in February 1711 and died in February 1723, to be succeeded by his son, Sir John, second baronet. It has been the unvaried tradition that this service was made for the first baronet although armorially there is no reason why the service could not have been made for Sir John’s son. This service is therefore the earliest dateable example of the new famille rose enamels being used on Chinese porcelain influenced by European originals. The order for the service possibly having been despatched in 1720 or 1721 before the full effect of the bursting of the South Sea Bubble was felt.

NON-SELLING EXHIBITIONS AND EVENTS Tennants hosts a busy and varied programme of exhibitions and events, which not only support and enhance the auction programme but provide a diverse cultural experience for visitors and the local community. Frequently working in association with museums, private collectors and educational establishments, highlights of the non-selling exhibition programme include curated displays of treasures from The Bowes Museum and fine art exhibitions including 350 Years of British Art and Light & Shadow, which showcased major loaned works from over twenty museums and numerous private collections. The applied arts have been celebrated with exhibitions dedicated to William Morris, antique quilts and the furniture and furnishings of Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson. Northern Art is championed too, with frequent selling exhibitions. Recent highlights have included Norman Cornish: Bishop’s Close Street and Sally Arnup: Life in Bronze, both of which were staged in conjunction with the artists’ estates.
