SUMMER SALE
An Introduction
The Summer Sale includes a fine selection of art and antiques from notable private estates. On offer will be a selection of chattels removed from Aske Hall, sold on Behalf of The Trustees of the late 3rd Marquess of Zetland Will Trust, selected items from the Estate of Martin and Felicity Mackintosh of Harrogate, selected items from Nook House, Jesmond Park East, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, The Property of a Lady, and select items from a property in the Cayman Islands.
Amongst the offering of fine 18th and 19th century furniture is Lot 385 a 19th Century Italian Ebony, Satin Birch, Fruitwood, Stained Fruitwood and Parcel-Gilt Centre Table, further inlaid with ivory and mother-of-pearl. Leading the 18th century furniture is Lot 384 a Louis XV Carved Giltwood Console Table dating from the middle of the century, which was purchased from Malletts in 1963, and it is offered with an estimate of £8,000-12,000.
Lot 245, a good George I Figured Walnut and Featherbanded Bureau Cabinet, made in the early 18th century is offered with an estimate of £4,000-6,000, a George II Figured, Featherbanded and Brass Mounted Walnut Cabinet on Chest, is offered with an estimate of £3,000-5,000, and Lot 294 a George III Carved Mahogany GainsboroughStyle Library Armchair is offered with an estimate of £3,500-4,500.
A white marble plaque with a bas-relief portrait of the Maharajah Duleep Singh, the last ruler of the Punjab and great friend of Queen Victoria (lot 153), will be offered with an estimate of £4,000-6,000. The portrait likeness was taken from a famous bust of Singh, sculpted in Rome by John Gibson whilst the Maharajah was visiting the city with the Prince of Wales in 1857, during the happiest part of his troubled life.
Amongst the collector’s pieces in the Asian Art and Ceramics section is Lot 31, a rare Worcester Porcelain ‘Wigornia’ Creamboat (estimate: £700-1,000). Made circa 1753, the hexagonal jug is moulded with Chinese figures and pagodas and decorated on the interior with blue foliage. This distinctive class of early Worcester creamboats is named after the example in the Museum of Worcester Porcelain, which is marked ‘Wigornia’ in relief on the base, the latinised word for the city of Worcester. Lot 138 a 19th century Japanese Ivory-Inlaid Painted and Gilt Lacquer Kodansu or Table Cabinet in the manner of Ogawa Haritsu is offered with an estimate of £500-700, and Lot 57 a Flight and Barr Worcester Porcelain Mug painted by John Pennington circa 1795 is offered with an estimate of £500-700. It is believed that John Pennington was the first painter to be engaged by the Flight factory after the Chamberlains left to set up their own factory, and his work includes the famous Hope Service, made in 1792 for the Duke of Clarence. The decoration on this mug is typical of the high-quality figure painting which occurs of a relatively small number of recorded examples.

Nine different mouldings have been recorded and in Paul Riley’s paper to the English Ceramics Circle, Volume 13, Part III, 1989, it is noted that there were only two known examples of moulding H recorded, one with polychrome decoration, the other blue and white. This, therefore, is a third example of this rare moulding.

After John Gibson RA (1790-1866): A White Marble Bas-Relief Plaque Worked with a Profile Portrait of the Maharajah Duleep Singh, facing to dexter on a circular ground, titled 50cm diameter
This bas-relief plaque is derived from the famous bust sculpted in Rome by John Gibson whilst the Maharajah was on a trip to city with the Prince of Wales. In her diary Lady Login, the Maharajah’s guardian, recorded the visit to Gibson’s studio on 13th June 1857
The Last Maharajah of The Punjab (1838-1893)
Maharajah Duleep Singh was born in Lahore in 1838, into the affluent court of the Sikh Kingdom. Following the death of his father, the Maharajah Ranjit Singh, the “Lion of the Punjab”, Duleep Singh was declared Maharajah at the incredibly young age of five years old. However, the British East India Company were quick to exploit this situation and the two ensuing Anglo-Sikh wars resulted in the Company taking control of the Punjab.
Following the annexation of the Punjab in 1849, Duleep Singh signed the Treaty of Lahore which saw Singh “resign for himself, his heirs, and his successors all right, title, and claim to the sovereignty of the Punjab, or to any sovereign power whatever”. The still young Duleep Singh was moved from the Punjab to Mussoorie, to be placed in the care of a Scottish surgeon Sir John Spencer Login of the East India Company, where he converted to Christianity and played cricket in an effort to become an archetypal English gentleman.
Anglicisation was soon followed by his move to England in 1854 where he received a pension of £25,000 a year provided he “remain obedient to the British Government”. Queen Victoria was enraptured by Singh and is recorded as saying “[He is] extremely handsome and speaks English perfectly… and has a pretty, graceful and dignified manner”, upon meeting him in 1854.
Despite Queen Victoria’s attempts at matchmaking Singh with other outcast Indian princesses, he married Bamba Muller, daughter of a Coptic Christian Ethiopian and a German Merchant, whom he had met in Cairo. The pair lived on a vast and lavish shooting estate, Elvenden in Norfolk, which was modelled in the Orientalist style. Queen Victoria became godmother to three of Singh’s children, Prince Victor and Princesses Catherine and Sophia, and he would be a frequent visitor to Osborne and Windsor Castle.
His later years were restless as he increasingly became disaffected with the British and reverted to his former faith, Sikhism. Despite his best efforts to reclaim the Punjab, he died in Paris in 1893 after suffering a stroke, but not without reconciling with Queen Victoria who pardoned him for his hostility towards the British Government in his later years.
