1037 John Dalby of York (1810-1865) Group portrait of Lord Durham, Ralph Lambton and Billy Williamson riding to a meet (by repute) Signed, oil on canvas, 29cm by 44cm All three men were members of northern hunts and enthusiastic Meltonians. Ralph Lambton, son of William Lambton (one of the first Meltonians), was a particularly celebrated hunting figure: in 1795 he took over the pack assembled by his brother, Henry Lambton and from 1809 he hunted hounds himself. Roger Longrigg commented: ‘He lived at the kennels and, like Lord Darlington, practically in them’ (The History of Foxhunting, 1975, p.108). Both George Lambton, 2nd Earl of Durham, and Ralph Lambton were also patrons of John Ferneley, who depicted Ralph Lambton and Billy Williamson (brother of Sir Hedworth Williamson, M.P. for Durham) with the Sedgefield Hunt in 1832 (Thirsk Hall, North Yorkshire). 1140  Laurence Stephen Lowry RBA, RA (1887-1976) Yachts at Lytham St Anne’s Signed and dated 1951, oil on panel, 21.5cm by 34cm Provenance: Bonhams London, 20th century British and Irish Art, 30 May 2012, lot 19 The Waddington Galleries, London Private Collection, UK Yachts at Lytham St Anne’s is a fine example from the series of pictures Lowry painted in Lytham over a thirty year period, beginning in the 1930’s and lasting well into the 1950’s. Lowry began visiting Lytham and making drawings as early as 1915. In stark contrast to Blackpool its noisy neighbour five miles down the coast, Lytham exudes a peaceful Edwardian, uncommercial elegance and its proximity to the sea, plethora of sailing clubs and unobstructed varied views looking out from the harbour, provided Lowry with endless source material. Yachts and the sea are a constant theme throughout the series, as is the fact that they all look optimistically outwards. This particular work is delightfully complex and has significantly more boats than we normally see. Our eye is drawn out across the bay to where the sky meets the sea and Lowry’s use of white adds scale, light and distance to the view. In the absence of figures, Lowry’s gift of adding movement to his paintings, is transferred here to the Yachts as they appear to us to scud about across the bay, producing an active, yet calm and peaceful composition. We are grateful to Jonathan Horwich for his assistance with compiling this catalogue entry.

Droit de Suite/ Artists’ Resale Rights

Collection

All items in this catalogue that are marked with “” are potentially qualifying items, and the royalty charge (set out below) will apply if the Hammer Price is more than the UK sterling equivalent of €1,000. The royalty charge will be added to purchase invoices, and must be paid before items can be cleared. All royalty charges are paid to either the Design and Artists Copyright Society (“DACS”) or the Artists’ Collecting Society (“ACS”) by the auctioneers, and no handling costs or additional fees with respect to these changes will be retained by the auctioneer.

All purchases much be collected from our Leyburn offices, unless stated otherwise, within seven days of the Sale (Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5.00pm).

From 14 February 2006 United Kingdom art market professionals (which includes auctioneers) are required to collect a royalty payment for all works of art that have been produced by living artists, and those who have died within the last 70 years. This payment is calculated on qualifying works of art which are sold for a Hammer Price more that the UK sterling equivalent of €1,000 (the UK sterling equivalent will fluctuate in line with prevailing exchange rates). It is the responsibility of the Buyer to acquaint themselves with the actual Euro to UK sterling exchange rate on the Day of Sale. The actual qualifying threshold will be calculated by the “Artist’s Resale Right Service Hub” based on the “European Central Bank” reference rate published at 2.15pm on the Day of Sale and can be found on www.dacs.org.uk
