Welcome home
T
he Ashland City Times’ annual Fact Book is a peerless resource for all things Cheatham County, offering useful information not only for longtime residents, but also for visitors and newcomers to our community. Cheatham County is a community steeped in history and enriched by family
ABOUT THE COVER (Top photo) Agriculture plays an important role in Cheatham County’s economy; (middle left) Local veterans are honored during the annual Memorial Day program; (middle right) Cheatham Lake holds an annual fishing rodeo in June; (bottom left) Pegram celebrates during the Independence Day celebration; and (bottom right) A scene from the Cheatham County Central High School football Homecoming parade.
and local traditions. It's considered one of Middle Tennessee's best-kept secrets — a quiet county of small towns along the Cumberland and Harpeth rivers, unscathed by the rapid development that has engulfed the Nashville area in recent years. This marks the 27th year for the Fact Book. As always, the information is provided in a handy, easy-to-access manner. Need to contact your county commissioner? See page 20. Need to contact your local fire department? Turn to page 30. Want to know the county's industries to help you with a job search? Check out page 80. The advertisers included in the Fact Book represent the people who do business each and every day in Cheatham County, and we thank them for supporting the publication and making it possible.
The Fact Book is included in a June edition of The Times. It is also available at our office at 202A N. Main St. in Ashland City and various locations throughout the county at no charge. The publication is also available online at www.ashlandcitytimes.com.

Sycamore Academy is a new private school located in Pleasant View, offering care for children six weeks through eighth grade. Sycamore Academy strives to instill in children a passion for learning by specializing in the time-tested, research based educational philosophy of Maria Montessori. The Montessori method allows children to work at their own pace, manipulating high quality, strategically designed materials that introduce even the smallest child to advanced concepts that will be used later in the abstract studies of the sciences and mathematics. Through the Montessori method, Sycamore Academy has designed a safe environment of peace, compassion, respect and accountability where children happily work, learn and acquire life skills. Each classroom is specifically designed to allow children freedom to move about the room, choose their own work, use it appropriately and put it away without constant instruction. Children are guided by Montessori trained teachers who gently direct each child to the answers they are seeking. Sycamore Academy’s goal is to cultivate the skills necessary in their students to create the next generation life learners, movers, shakers, and peace makers.

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION The Cheatham County Community Foundation was established in 1998 to help make Cheatham County citizens’ charitable dreams a reality. By investing in scholarships and unmet needs of the county’s citizens through a permanent pool of charitable resources, the Cheatham County Community Foundation is enhancing the quality of life for the county's residents, now and always. The foundation’s initial priority was to support Cheatham County residents by awarding scholarships, and to date, has awarded 155 scholarships, totaling $149,400. Thanks in large part to the community’s generous support through the annual Cumberland Ball fundraiser, the scholarships are impacting students’ lives. In addition to supporting education for residents, the foundation has met community needs through grant awards to nonprofit organizations in the county, including support through the Cheatham County Disaster Response Fund, established after the May 2010 flood. Past non-profit grant recipients have included The Ark Community Resource and Assistance Center, Bethesda Center/Cheatham County Ministerial Alliance, Cheatham County Imagination Library, Cheatham County Historical and Genealogical Association, Habitat for Humanity Dickson/ Cheatham Division and Pegram Elementary School. Volunteers helped build the fourth Habitat for Humanity home in Cheatham County this year.
The floods of 2010 hit Cheatham County hard. When dedicated Habitat volunteers from the Dickson Habitat teamed up with the Cheatham Long Term Recovery committee to help, the community realized that there was a need for a permanent Habitat presence in Cheatham County. In December of that year, the Cheatham Division of Habitat for Humanity officially opened, bringing the opportunity for low-income families to purchase quality, affordable homes. Cheatham Habitat has now built four homes in the county, with the latest one being completed in June 2015. Habitat homeowners earn their zero percent interest mortgage rate by attending homeownership classes and working on the build site. If you or anyone you know is interested in applying for a Habitat home, contact director Michael Allen at cmallen@habitatnashville.org or call 615-973-6732. Our farm families produce tobacco, livestock, hay, row crops (corn and soybeans) and small-scale fruits and vegetables. The county currently ranks fourth in the state of Tennessee for tobacco production and is known for growing some of the finest quality dark-fired tobacco anywhere in the world. The county also produces 10,000 head of beef cattle and 14,000 acres of hay annually. Seven thousand acres of corn and soybeans are produced annually, primarily in the Cumberland and Harpeth River bottoms. Small-scale fruit and vegetable production is on the increase throughout the county as a growing number of consumers look to purchase locally grown produce. Programs for farmers, homeowners UT & TSU Cheatham County Extension provides research based information through educational programs to farmers and homeowners. These programs cover a wide range of subject matter at various meetings, workshops, on-farm demonstrations, farm visits, tours and field days. Participants are informed of these programs through newsletters, local media, electronic media and social media.

This service may also include speech and hearing screenings. Family Planning Patients receive a complete physical exam and all appropriate lab tests, and are taught about birth control methods and supplied with their chosen method (unless there is a medical reason that would be dangerous). Many infections and other contraceptive problems can also be treated.
