Shop smart, save money

Red tag sales, early/late bird specials, clearance racks — this holiday season, everyone is looking for a bargain. “With the economy being the way it is, everyone is conscious of every penny they have,” says Jeremy Murrin, general manager of Prime Outlets in Lebanon. “And they want to make sure they are getting the most bang for their buck.” To help make your holiday shopping experience a success, check out these helpful hints.

Subscribe to an e-mail list

Be the first to find out about the hottest deals by joining the e-mail list of your local mall or favorite store. By adding yourself to these lists, you may be alerted to upcoming sales or even receive special coupons or invitations to shopping events or promotions. For example, Prime Outlets has dozens of specials and coupons for its stores as part of the “Prime My Closet” program, which is available online at www.primeoutlets.com/locations/lebanon.aspx for consumers who would like to register. Blandon Prowse, executive team leader of human resources at the Charlotte Pike Target in Nashville, says Target also features weekly specials with all kinds of discounts and coupons. These are all available online when consumers sign up for regular e-mail alerts through www.target.com.

Buy early and late

As a way to create excitement and draw crowds, many stores host tremendous early morning or late night sales close to the holidays. By being on the e-mail list of your favorite store or mall, you will likely be alerted to such upcoming events. Prowse says Target will have a massive “Two-Day Sale” event featuring deep discounts. The event will take place on the two days after Thanksgiving, 5 a.m. to noon both days (stores will be open regular hours). Prime Outlets is also planning a Christmas extravaganza sale that will be announced closer to the holidays.

Check the local paper

For the best deals, review the advertisements and coupons available daily within THE TENNESSEAN | AN ADVERTISING SECTION

Save time and money this holiday by shopping smart. ADBUILDER

The Tennessean. You’ll find discounts on everything from holiday turkeys to the latest electronics. Murrin and Prowse say both of their companies offer numerous deals through newspaper advertisements. To find more coupons and deals, Murrin suggests that before you start shopping that you visit your mall’s guest services center, where they may have gift bags and coupons from various stores.

Comparison shop

Murrin says that being organized is crucial to developing a successful shopping strategy. Prowse states that it’s helpful to start a list of items you need to purchase beforehand and watch for ads in the newspaper and in your mall e-mail alerts as early as possible. Then make your purchases wherever you find the best deals or most compelling promotions.

Relive the history of the Titans in Nashville with this hard-bound, full-color book full of photos and highlights. You can remember all the moments, games and players that have defined the team, including the Music City Miracle and a chapter on Steve McNair. ORDER TODAY FOR CHRISTMAS!

Plan trips in advance

To save time and gas money, Prowse says to plan out shopping treks in advance, making trips to stores that are all in the same area. Murrin explains that one of the best ways to save time is to immediately obtain a mall/store map when you arrive. This makes it easier to plan out which shops you want to visit and to create a plan of action. Friday, November 27, 2009 | 15

Handle with care: Shipping holiday gifts Planning on shipping gifts for the holidays? In order to save time, money and possibly headaches, check out these tips. • Plan ahead. Every shipping carrier is slammed around the holidays. In order to save yourself a few bucks, it’s best to mail your presents with plenty of time to spare. “Consumers can save time and money this year by planning ahead and shipping early,” says Sonya Thorpe, senior communications specialist with FedEx Office. “Customers who ship by Dec. 17, 2009, can use FedEx Ground and Home Delivery Services for the most cost-effective delivery.” Most carriers, including the U.S. Postal Service and FedEx, have important dates listed on their Web sites about holiday shipping. Visit usps.com or fedex.com for more information. • Choose the right materials. By its very nature, mail will undergo its fair share of bumps, nicks and thumps, so it’s important to use the right materi-

als when packing your items. For starters, usps.com recommends using a new, sturdy cardboard box that will hold up to mild wear and tear. And don’t forget to review the box’s weight limit. In addition, Thorpe advises shippers to put an address label both inside and outside the box. (In the event that the outer label is ripped off, most carriers will open the box and look for a second address label.) She says you should never wrap the exterior of the shipping box, as this might cause it to get caught on conveyor belts. The postal service also recommends putting a return address on the package, in the event that it cannot be delivered for some reason. • Pack it properly. To ensure that your package arrives safely with its contents intact, Thorpe says you should use the proper padding materials when shipping your holiday gifts. “Newspaper is not the best choice, as it will take a lot of paper to provide proper cushioning, increasing the weight of the ship-

ment. Bubble wrap and/or foam peanuts are excellent, lightweight options for cushioning,” says Thorpe. To seal the package, usps.com recommends that you only use tape designed for sealing shipping boxes; never use string, cellophane

or masking tape. In addition, consolidate your gifts, if possible. For example, if you’re sending gifts to several people in the same home, pack their gifts into one box. Sending a 30pound box usually costs less than sending two sepa-

NO MORE PAIN

Those with chronic back pain can now breathe a sigh of relief thanks to Dr. Eric Ries and his new FDA approved non-surgical technology. Over 11 years ago, NASA discovered that astronauts were relieved of back and neck pain during space travel. In the “zero gravity” state, astronauts gained as much as two inches due to increased disc height and pressure on their spines was eliminated. This discovery led to the development of a treatment that mimics this “zero gravity” state. The SPINA decompression system was developed by a team of back specialists and NASA engineers. Unlike other types

of treatment, spinal decompression repositions the disc and repairs the disc structure. These dramatic improvements are seen on before and after MRI studies. “These treatments have been nothing short of a miracle. After two weeks of treatment, I have been able to resume all sports activities and I feel great!” – Hugh S. “Spinal decompression is a major advancement in the treatment of back pain because it is the only non-surgical disc treatment proven to have lasting results,” says Dr. Eric Ries of Cool Springs Back and Neck Care located in Franklin, Tenn. “Research has shown that in a clinical

Mr. Howard Smithson with Dr. Ries following his Spinal Decompression treatments. Mr. Smithson can now walk without pain. He had suffered from chronic Sciatic Nerve pain.

study, more than 86% of patients treated with spinal decompression were effectively corrected.” Treatment for the patient is extremely comfortable and some patients fall asleep during their 30-minute treatment session. In many cases the pain resolves after the first few minutes of being

on the machine. “Most patients I will see have tried everything from medication to surgery. Thanks to this technology, I am able to help patients quickly without any risks or complications,” explained Dr. Ries.

Enhance enjoyment, savings this holiday season

With the holidays just around the corner, consumers are turning their attention to the annual practices of shopping, wrapping, baking, decorating and getting together with friends and family. We all look forward to these traditions each season, but you can make them even more entertaining and efficient with a few tips. There are many ways for celebrants to enhance their enjoyment of the season with just a little creativity, according to Rochelle Lulow, holiday etiquette expert at American Greetings Corp. Lulow has been with the greeting card company for more than 25 years, working to uncover the intricacies of relationships and traditions and what makes them so important to us. Through this work, Lulow and her team have received some wonderfully useful hints, tips and suggestions on making every occasion more enjoyable, creative and affordable. “Consumers want to keep the fun and togetherness of the season intact, and there are many ways they can do that while still making efficient decisions with their spending” she says. “By

using a little ingenuity and collaboration, you can make the holidays more enjoyable for everyone, including yourself.” Here are Lulow’s tips for having a happy and stressfree holiday season. Make a list and check it twice. Start your preparations by making a master list of everyone you need to shop for, what you got them last year and what you want to get them this year. By making and sticking to your list, you can more efficiently manage your budget and ensure you stay on target. Find your inner early bird. By getting your holiday chores started earlier, you will have even more time to unwind with family and friends later on. A new holiday gettogether. Make gift wrapping and baking more fun, efficient and economical by getting together with friends and family. Hosting or attending a gift-wrapping or baking party will make the annual practices more enjoyable, but it can also help with the thoughtfulness of your presentation as you share ideas and recipes. Neighborhood decorating party. This year, encour-

age a cheerful competitive spirit with everyone in your area by organizing a decorating block party. Encourage everyone to decorate and share decor and lights to ensure brilliant, unique displays. Lighten up gatherings

with a dash of creativity. One of the most enjoyable parts of the holidays is getting together with friends, family and colleagues. This season, make get-togethers even more enjoyable with a few subtle enhancements. Rather than coordinating a

large dinner party, offer appetizers using unique taste combinations and other snacks for refreshments. Your guests will definitely appreciate the light menu after weeks of heavy meals. Cut down on your bar to feature only a few varieties,

and offer seasonally inspired nonalcoholic drinks. With a lighter menu and bar, you can cut your costs, while making the gettogether even more creative and fun for you and your guests. — ARA Content

Spice up your packages with some fresh ideas Tired of the same old gift-wrapping habits? There are all sorts of creative ways to wrap your gifts this season, from festively adorned packages to utilizing colorful gift bags available at large retailers and specialty stores. Even if you prefer a traditional package with holiday wrapping paper and a bow, you can add a little something extra to dress up your packages. “Our events coordinator is really creative and has lots of (wrapping) ideas,” says Amy MacDonald, manager for Michaels Arts & Crafts in Cool Springs. “While we don’t wrap presents for customers, we are happy to give them suggestions.” Arts and crafts stores stock special holiday tins, bags, paper, ribbon and decorative picks that can be used to decorate your packages. Placing gifts in tins, boxes and bags is ecofriendly because they are reusable. You can also use miniature ornaments, craft items, shells or other natural treasures to personalize your gift wrapping. Gift bags stuffed with contrasting tissue paper and ribbons are another easy way to package a gift. Simply add your gift, a bow and tag and the gift is ready to give. Here are some additional ideas

Be creative with holiday wrapping. There are many ways to give your packages a fresh and festive look.

MacDonald offers to add a bit of creativity and imagination to your holiday gift packaging. • Wrap wine bottles with dish towels • Secure gift bags with ponytail holders • Use a jump rope to tie presents for kids • Use newspaper and maps to wrap boxes; it’s a good way to recycle MacDonald recommends using a mailing tube to disguise long items such as a baseball bat or golf club. (Tape two together for a longer item, like a fishing pole.) She also encourages shoppers to look at holiday window displays for ideas. Many more ideas can be found at online craft sites. If you want someone else to do the wrapping for you, many area stores

offer the service for a price. According to Lindy Mullen, spokesperson for CBL & Associates Properties, Wrap City will open in RiverGate Mall (between Auntie Ann’s and Deb) on Nov. 27. This wrapping service will offer a variety of wrapping and package options priced according to size and the type of materials selected. Wrap City will remain open through Christmas Eve. Other businesses may offer free gift wrap with purchase or for a small fee. Check with area retailers to find out what they offer. Whether you choose to creatively wrap your own gifts or have them wrapped at a store or by a service, it’s nice to know that options exist.

’Tis the season of giving. The holidays are traditionally a time for family and celebration, parties and presents, and festivities of all kinds. While it is the season of giving, it’s also a time when area nonprofit agencies see an increase in requests for services. These organizations hope that consumers will remember to give back this holiday season. Regardless of the size of the gift, there are many ways to help. Cash donations are always welcome, but nonprofit agencies also need and appreciate the donation of time, food and goods. With the state of the economy, there are a record number of requests for help in the Metro area. United Way reports that year-todate calls for food assistance are up 75 percent, calls for utility assistance are up 36 percent, and calls for employment and education are up 36 percent. According to Eric Dewey, president and CEO of United Way of Metropolitan Nashville, there are many ways to give back to the community throughout the year, whether it’s a financial gift, advocating on behalf of a cause or volunteering your time to make a difference. “What we’ve been hearing again and again during our campaign is that people want to help — despite how the economy may be affecting them personally,” says Dewey. “It’s important to remember that compassion has not become a casualty during these tough times.” If you’re looking for ways to give back, Rachel Hester,

executive director of the Room In the Inn program, suggests giving time or much-needed items. Room In the Inn provides services to the homeless, including literacy classes, job skills development, and food and shelter. “It is our hope that people never get out of the habit of giving,” says Hester. “You can be as creative as you want; you can donate things like plastic grocery bags, which help people sort their belongings, travel toiletry items or warm clothing. Why not share a talent? You can come play music or sing for our guests. ” Hester suggests having a “sock it to ’em with love” gathering where guests bring new socks for the homeless. According to Hester, because homeless people are frequently exposed to inclement weather, their socks get wet and need to be replaced. “It is important to see how someone else’s situation can be a positive in our own lives,” says Hester. An increased number of people are finding themselves in dire need of food, many for the first time in their lives. Second Harvest

Food Bank of Middle Tennessee has a variety of programs designed to provide food for the hungry. “Hunger Helpers” is a program that allows children ages 7 and up to help sort food on Thursday evenings, 5:30-7 p.m. Adults are needed to sort perishable items, assist in the office, and help prepare and clean up in the First Harvest Café. Volunteers may also contribute by dining at First Harvest Café on Fridays, where the $12 cost goes back to Second Harvest. Food donations are accepted at area grocery stores or at Second Harvest. Don’t forget that fourlegged friends need assistance, too. The Community Pet Food Bank is in need of dry cat food and dog food, as well as flea and tick prevention items, pet shampoo and gift cards to area stores. “We encourage everyone to advocate and volunteer, to live united. It’s the best way to effect lasting change,” says Dewey. Hester says that regardless of what you can give, it will be helpful and appreciated. “Give the best you can; someone will treasure your gift,” she says.
