M

iddle Tennesseans love mainfloor living, and with today’s new builds and renovations, more and more people are embracing the best staying on the same level has to offer. Perfect for multi-generational living, people who invest in renovating their homes to accommodate more use on the first floor know they will be able to stay in the same place for years to come.

2

While some argue that after years of popularity open-concept layouts are on their way out, Sumner County homeowners can’t get enough. Sick of being closed off from family and friends when they have to prepare food, main levels are becoming wide open spaces with many different roles. “Most people are looking for open concepts, so we have kitchens flowing into living rooms, and in the foyer and

Sometimes divided by columns or something similar to delineate different living spaces, visually when you first walk into an open-concept home you will have a nice, open space just right for entertaining. The only main floor rooms that are really closed off from the rest are the master bedrooms, sometimes two, and bathrooms. “Most people are trying to open it up from the kitchen area to a hearth room or den area where, when people come over, everyone congregates in the kitchen,” says James Wallace with Wallace Custom Builders in Gallatin. “They are trying to get the kitchen and the hearth or family room closer together where everyone can intermingle at the same time.”

slowed down — mainly because you can stick a 65-inch TV just about anywhere — that doesn’t mean people are less concerned with at-home entertainment. It just revolves around more interaction than watching a movie will allow. “Everyone seems to be concerned with being able to entertain, so we are doing a lot of large kitchen islands to accommodate seating around the island and that form of entertainment,” Pettis says. That means more talking, less tech immersion. Of course, that doesn’t mean people aren’t investing in spaces to enjoy some of the latest at-home equipment on the market completely, as well as spaces to stay fit. And with people reinvesting in their homes again, they are thinking about what would make them happy, not just resale value. “People are spending more,” Wallace says. “People, myself included, are back to as busy as they were before the downturn in the economy. Everything has picked up and is moving right along.”

Freshen up with new color By Hollie Deese For Sumner County Publications

When it comes to color, soft and muted is having a moment. And according to Hendersonville-based designer Baylor Bone of Baylor Bone Interiors, one neutral is really standing out. “Gray is still the most popular base color,” she says, and suggests adding it too walls for a modern, fresh starting point that is really inexpensive thanks to paint’s low prices. From there, you can start to layer personal favorites. “You can also add colored pillows to a sofa and art with color,” she says. “This will give you an instant update.” Bone finds inspiration everywhere, especially once the weather warms up, and suggests homeowners do the same. And instead of following trends, they should just choose colors you actually really like when giving any room in the house a fresh coat of paint. “Flowers, fashion, nature — color is everywhere,” she says. “Whatever catches your eye and inspires you, select colors that you love to be surrounded with. For spring, it needs to be your favorite color because you are living in the home.”

COLORS TO TRY Guilford Green Benjamin Moore has revealed their color of the year, and it is a far cry from Pantone’s morose Marsala. Guilford Green, part of their Historic Color collection, is refined, elegant and traditional and sets a very soothing tone reminiscent of a citrus grove. “We chose Guilford Green as our 2015 Color of the Year because it can be the hero or the highlight in any room, enhancing the architectural identity of a space,” said Ellen O’Neill, creative director at Benjamin Moore in a release. “Guilford Green is the perfect thread to connect nature, spaces and interiors with color schemes that signify fresh energy and growth.” Also hot for 2015, they have tapped four specific color families — green, blue, blush and berry — and then suggesting people layer other hues from the same family for a monochromatic look that allows for a fresh approach in designing a room as a single

hue. Using a variety of paint sheens creates another layer of texture. “Homeowners are ready to experiment with color and are more confident with making unique design choices for the home,” added O’Neill.

Fruit Shake Part of Benjamin Moore’s bold and saturated Color Preview collection, Fruit Shake is a perfect berry shade.

Province Blue Also part of Benjamin Moore’s bold and saturated Color Preview collection, Province Blue is a shade to try if going for a blue-hued room.

Area rugs, accent floors all the rage this season By Hollie Deese For Sumner County Publications

S

ince 1988, Michael Foster of Foster’s Floor Covering in Gallatin has been helping homeowners choose the right area rug for their rooms. And with the continued demand for wood floors, he has been doing brisk business. “With the popularity of hardwood floors, area rugs have come into vogue so to speak,” he says. “And they are putting area rugs in every room — kitchens and entry halls and dining rooms and great rooms.” Area rugs come in a variety of sizes, but not the typical 2’ x 4’, 3’ x 5’, 8’ x 6’ sizes we are typically used to. “In rugs you almost have to have a Middle Eastern mindset because everything is about 8’ x 10’, 8’ x 11’.

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2015 | HOME IMPROVEMENT

Everything is approximate.” Foster says people are welcome to come to the showroom with pillows or fabrics or photographs of the rooms, which ultimately helps them choose the right rug. But sometimes a homeowner needs to see how it actually plays in their room before making the final purchase. “We certainly go out for color consultations quite a bit to help folks get the right rug for the room,” Foster says. “The thing about a rugs is that each rug will help the room look a little different. Even though it is color correct, if you roll one rug out it is going to make the room have a distinctive feel as opposed to another rug. So you want the right rug in the room to make the room come off the way you want it to look.”

Wood still reigns as flooring options abound By Hollie Deese For Sumner County Publications

W

hen it comes to flooring trends, homeowners just can’t get enough of hardwood. And what’s not to love? People love their clean look, don’t trap dust and are easier to maintain than in years past. You can pretty much dry dust them and once in a while put a spritzer of a cleaner/conditioner on them,” says Barbara Foutch of Gallatin Floor Fashions, which has been open since 1978. “The floors of today are not like grandma’s floors, because back in those days they had to be waxed and buffed. Now they are just as easy as can be.” Plus, if you are thinking about resale, buyers typically prefer hardwood over carpet. “It usually increases the value of your home,” Foutch says. “And, of course, it is just the trend, with the biggest trend being hand-scraped woods and wider planks.” For people who want something that has a similar look but for less money, Foutch says luxury vinyl tile that looks like hardwood is super durable for people with pets and kids. And don’t count out carpet either — people still love stepping on something soft, especially in their bedrooms. “Carpet has really come up, too,” Foutch says. ‘There are next generation yarns that are really strong in the carpet industry. There are some that are antimicrobial, some that are pet proof, and it just goes on and on.”

Changing wasted space to needed storage By Hollie Deese For Sumner County Publications

and their cabinets — are whisked away. Islands that were once a mere 24” deep are now being built twice that deep with cabinets on the backside, so what was once a finished panel is now a functional door offering easy access to the pressure cooker. “We try to take advantage of every aspect of the layout as much as we can and make it very functional, but also very practical,” says Jack McDonald with McDonald & Crews Custom Cabinetry.

s there a worse sound in the world than the loud and aggressive clanking of a pan being roughly pulled out of an over-jammed kitchen cabinet? Maybe, but more and more people are turning to smart storage solutions to make their kitchen cabinets much more user-friendly. “Usually when people come to us it is because they have gotten to the point where they are fed up with how difficult it is to access things,” says Charlie Rose with Shelfgenie of Nashville and Huntsville. “Clutter lends directly to stress, and if you can declutter and get rid of some of that stuff, then the day is a little smoother. And that is what we want to do, is make life a little simpler.” With kitchens continuing to be the anchor of popular open-concept floor plans, people are turning to their islands to find more storage as walls —

And homeowners don’t actually need quite as many cabinets now that they have the option of adding storage solutions within the ones they do have to make them function better. “There are a lot of different accessories you can put inside your cabinets to make them more efficient,” says Leslie Hartman with Kitchen Tune-Up in Hendersonville. “You can do cabinet roll

You pull it out and it will have a base organizer so you could put different things like oil and vinegar bottles.” McDonald agrees drawers are on the rise whenever he and his crew work on custom cabinets. “Putting in drawers that give them more storage, that is a big part of our business,” he says. Of course, what each homeowner needs is different so it’s best to start each project knowing exactly how the space isn’t working for you now and go from there. “Our designs are really based around the content that our clients have so there is really no one solution fits all,” Rose says. “It just boils down to how big it is, how wide it is, what you intend on using the space for, will it need to be adaptable for future use. So we really think not just for the immediacy of the moment but for long term.”

Homeowners have smart solutions for storage.

Bathtub face-lift adds aesthetic value By Hollie Deese For Sumner County Publications

o one likes an old tub. Sure, they may function fine, but when the materials are faded, scratched, chipped or dated, they are not exactly the first thing you want to get into each day. If a total bathroom rehab is not feasible anytime soon, a simple facelift might do the trick. “All of our products are made of high-grade acrylic that is scratch resistant, mold resistant, nonporous material, and in many style options,” says Marianne Werner with Bath Fitter in Madison. The business, which has been in the area for about 15 years, will come to the customer with options so people can see how they will look in their home. There, measurements can be done for the custom-made bathtub liner and wall system. Along with replacing existing tubs, Bath Fitter also renovates showers and does tub-to shower conversions. “Any size will pretty much fit because we custom make and manufacture all of our own products,” Werner says. “Along with kitchen remodeling, it is one of those projects where you will get your return on investment for it.” And at American Home Design in Goodlettsville, bath and shower wraps are also an option, as is a full bathroom renovation, tub replacement, shower conversion and even walk-in tubs with grab bars, slip-resistant floors and seats that are in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

f you think Clark Griswold had the right idea when he dreamed about installing a pool for his family, you are not alone. According to the Association of Pool and Spa Professionals, there are currently 9 million in-ground and above-ground residential pools in the country, with nearly 220,000 installed in 2013. “Last year was probably the best year we have had in our business since 1968,” says Jay Tucker with Swim World Pools in Gallatin. “And this year, it is starting out to be that way as well.” Incorporating pools into their updated landscaping schemes, finding ways to fit them into any space, it’s clear people are embracing the backyard feature as another way to enjoy the square footage they have. “There are a lot more pools being put in, a lot more landscaping around pools and people adding the outdoor

living areas between the house and the pool, somehow drawing it all together,” says Jared Crain with Crain’s Lawn Care. “It is what a lot of people are doing. Even if they are on the lake, it seems people are putting in pools more and more.”

About the experience Today, pools are so much more than a leaf-catching status symbol. Middle Tennessee families are installing pools to enhance the at-home living experience for their families and entertainment options for their friends. “A lot of people are understanding it is not just about a pool,” Tucker says. “It is a backyard, an extension of the home. People want to have a place where family and friends can gather and reinvest in their homes as well.” And pools are just one more option » OUTDOORS, 15

homeowners have when making a backyard oasis tempting enough to curb a few vacations. “We are doing nice kitchens and fire pits and pergolas and make it an outdoor living space,” Tucker says. “It is what more and more people are doing these days, and with the way rates are and money available, people are putting money into the home.”

Renovate the old Tucker says the influx of people moving to the area from out of town means many pool rehabilitation projects have kept him busy as well as he helps new owners find new life in an older pool. “We come in and do some nice stone work or resurface it, redo some decking to make it blend and modernize it some more,” he says. And many homeowners, whether they have owned a pool in the past or are experiencing their own for the first time, are realizing they are not as high-maintenance as they once were.

Outdoor spaces top home upgrades list

“Pools aren’t like they used to be,” Tucker says. “Sometimes someone had a pool 15-20 years ago and think it is a lot of work and would never want a pool again. But with the appropriate equipment installed right, 30-40 minutes max a week is all you need to tend to a pool these days.” Even people with small spaces can have their own pool. Tucker and his crew use 3D animation to plan pools that fit into even the smallest spaces.

By Hollie Deese For Sumner County Publications

Big project Homeowners who want to be splashing around this summer need to be making plans now, and really consider how big of a project installation can be. Add in design time and the approval of a homeowners association and it could take months. “Sometimes, what folks don’t think about is that this is a construction project, and sometimes 6-8 weeks is what it takes to build a pool depending on the complexity of it,” Tucker says. “It can be a little bit less or sometimes even longer. If you wait until April and you have a couple of months of construction, they don’t get the full use out of it. So now is the perfect time.”

hile our neighbors to the north and east are busy shoveling snow, lucky Middle Tennesseans are spending more time than ever enjoying life outside. Thanks to relatively mild temperatures, practically no snow and a renewed desire to reinvest in homes, outdoor living spaces are still one of the top renovations in the area. “Outdoor living is extremely popular,” says Trey Pettis with Pettis Builders. “People want a space that can function as an indoor and outdoor space, and contrary to the cold we have right now, it is something you get to use a large portion of the year.” And he is not the only local builder seeing the trend continue to grow. “There is a lot more outside living » PATIO, 16

ith weather like ours, living life in the backyard is practically mandatory. But with lives as busy as they have gotten, many people just don’t have the time to handle the maintenance it can take for a picture perfect garden. “I have had a lot of customers in the past show me a picture out of Southern Living with a beautiful English garden and say that is what they want their yard to look like,” says John Puryear with Puryear Farms in Gallatin. “And I agree, it is

beautiful, but it is our job to educate people that those things generally require a much higher degree of maintenance. And they are also very seasonal.” Instead of hard-tocare-for foliage, homeowners are instead going toward innovative hardscape options, which can be as subdued as a pathway of classic stone pavers, or as exciting as a 20nozzle splash pad for kids to romp. “It was big business last year,” Jared Crain of Crain Lawn Care in Gallatin says of hardscapes. “There are a lot of people doing that instead of just a deck. They are putting out

the fire pits, and the fireplaces and the covered patios. They are really just trying to create more square footage outside.” Crain says homeowners are looking to make special places outside that appeal to their desire to spend time with family, and that means bench seating out of retainer walls so they can huddle together and roast marshmallows. People are definitely taking it from the inside to the outside, but Tennessee is a good climate for that until about July and August,” Crain says. “And then you just put in a splash pad.”

space where you have people doing outdoor grills, patios, fireplaces and stuff like that,” says James Wallace with Wallace Custom Builders. Pettis says they have been doing a lot of covered porches, which offer homeowners a gate to the outdoors without leaving them exposed to the elements. Many times they will be threesided, with an acidstained floor and bead board ceiling. “It is a true indoor/ outdoor space, and a lot of people are looking for large French doors or accordion doors so in nice weather they can open that up and have one large space that connects into the home,” he says.

that people are beginning to understand it is not really about the cooking, it is about creating an environment,” says John Puryear with Puryear Farms. “It is a lot preferable to keeping the festive environment going rather than having to excuse yourself to have to go to the kitchen for this and that.” That’s why people now are asking for firepits with intimate seating areas, raised bars with cocktail seating and other extras to create a place people want to gather.

The right furniture Eddie Gibson with Gibson Furniture and Patio in Gallatin says as people are installing pools and doing extensive outdoor work, they are looking for new furniture as well. “The economy is coming back,” he says. “The patio is a luxury item, so it is not something you have to have, and I am seeing people more willing to spend money on their patio now. You don’t want to spend a lot of money on your outdoor furniture if you haven’t updated your inside.”

» NURSERY, 17 Gibson says many people come to him looking for wicker items because it is a material that most everyone is familiar with, However, there are new options in vinyl or resin that reduce weathering and wear from the elements. “I see people now buying the cast aluminum because it is more comfortable and it really will last a lot longer than the wicker,” Gibson says. “Everyone knows wicker because it has always been around, so when they come in they are not aware of the cast aluminum product but will end up going with it over the wicker because of the comfort level.” Across the board, the fact homeowners are ready to reinvest in their outdoor spaces shows consumer confidence is much higher than previous years. “We are very busy and poised to have one of our best years, if not our best year,” Pettis says. “This year is looking really strong in terms of not only new construction building, but also larger renovations where people are putting quite a bit of money into their existing homes.”

Add color Of course, if you just have to have plants there are still plenty of options, starting with the old standby — trees. “Ornamental trees and flowering trees are going to be your biggest bang for the buck with the lowest maintenance,” says Puryear. “Ornamental trees are a great investment for people who want landscaping but don’t want the high degree of maintenance.” Tommy Cantrell from Tommy’s Garden Center in Portland agrees, and says people who want low maintenance plants should go for green velvet boxwoods or dwarf boxwoods. “They are low maintenance and don’t get as big so they don’t have to trim all the time,” he says. “They are just easy to take care of and are hardy.” For flowering plants, he says azaleas and abelias add color without needing constant attention.

Plus, it couldn’t be a better time of year to get inspired by home renovation. “It is right on the cusp of when we start getting that pretty weather and trees are just starting to bud, so people are getting that itch to do something since they have been cooped up too long,” Morren says. “It is a nice time to get out and scratch that itch you have had all winter, and hopefully when spring comes around you can get those ideas out there and do them.”
