Justin Taylor Freeman and Ashlyn Blake Carter By Hollie Deese For Sumner County Publications

Justin Freeman, 23, and Ashlyn Carter, 22, may have grown up just miles apart — she as a student at Westmoreland High School, he at Portland High, but it took a University of Tennessee vs. University of Alabama game in Knoxville in October 2012 where she was a student for the two of them to meet. And, of course, they were rooting for different teams. But the rivalry didn’t stop them from making a connection and a few months later when she was back home from school for Thanksgiving they made plans to eat at Cheddar’s and go bowling with friends. They began dating, but since she had to go back to school their relationship progressed miles apart from each other. “We would talk and then eventually we started Skyping because I had to finish school and he was back here working,” she says. “We did long distance the majority of our dating.” The two were set to spend Valentine’s weekend together in Knoxville. He told her she could make plans the first night, but to leave the second night to him. “So he told me to get really dressed up and we left and he put a blindfold on me,” she says. “We get out of the car and I am still blindfolded, walking up all these hills and stairs in heels. And I take the blindfold off and we are in front of the Sun Sphere and he is down on his knees.” After she graduated school in May she moved back to the area and the couple were able to tie the knot in November 2014 in front of 175 guests. After the wedding, which was on one of the coldest days of the year, the couple honeymooned in Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. Now she works as a lab coordinator at Hoeganaes in Gallatin while he is a lineman for Nashville Electric Service, and the couple is enjoying building a life together instead of video chatting long distance. “It is really different, but it is a good different,” she says.

Tye Fishler and Hilary Barnes By Hollie Deese For Sumner County Publications

After Tye Fishler, 32, met fellow fitness fan Hilary Barnes, 28, in the summer of 2013 through mutual friends, the pair began a Facebook friendship that involved encouraging each other with their training. But when Fishler, owner of personal training company Body By Tye in Hermitage, invited her to work out with him, she warned him right off the bat they could work together, but he couldn’t train her. “Of course I knew my own thing about working out,” she jokes. So the pair exercised together, and afterwards spent three hours outside the gym on a bench just talking. “It is history from there,” she says. When he proposed, he recruited her sisters and arranged to surprise her during one of their regular girls’ days out. “We all decided to go to the Aquarium Restaurant in Opry Mills,” she says. “He said he was going to have a guys’ day with my brother and stepdad at my mom’s house.” Instead, Fishler and his 9-year-old son met her sisters at the restaurant. Usually, Barnes is the first one to arrive when meeting her sisters. But this time when she showed up they were all already there, and had even already placed orders for drinks and appetizers. Barnes was a bit miffed, but not for long. “And then my husband comes out with the waiter and appetizer and he proposed to me right there,” she says. “And the rest of my family had snuck in the back of Aquarium and we all had dinner afterward. His son was holding a little bouquet, and it was pretty neat.” On Sept. 6, 2014, the couple were married in front of 110 guests at Epic Event Centre in Gallatin, the historic venue giving the bride the rustic look she was going for without the risk of having an outdoor barn wedding. After, they spent their honeymoon in Cancun before returning to Middle Tennessee to run the personal training business together. “We both knew what we wanted and what we were looking for, and we clicked from the start.”

Sarah Hibbs and Ryan Williams By Hollie Deese For Sumner County Publications

Sarah Hibbs and Ryan Williams were both students at Middle Tennessee State University in 2008 when they first met — he was playing softball and she was watching and hanging out with some friends. After exchanging numbers the two exchanged friendly texts for more than a year before a run-in on Old Hickory Lake put them both in the right place at the right time. “We both are lake lovers and he runs a marina in Hendersonville,” she says. “So we were on the lake that day and he texted me ‘I see you,’ and I looked over and there he was. We hung out that whole entire day and have been inseparable ever since.” It wasn’t until July 2013 when they were on a family vacation in Flordia when he proposed to her. Three days into their trip, the two finally had some alone time on the beach with their boxer and some serious moonlight. “He was going to do it on the first night but he wanted the right moment and he wanted it to just be us, so he waited,” she says. On Sept. 27, 2014, the couple tied the knot in front of 350 guests on Bottom View Farm loaded with special touches. “It was an awesome day,” she says. “I think it was really special that my mom sang for me, and it was a big dance party. We danced all night.” After, they left in dramatic fashion at the end of the night in the Channel 4 weather helicopter. “It was pretty insane,” she admits. “I had never been in a helicopter before and they dropped us off at the airport. We had a limo pick us up from there and take us to Opryland Hotel. I don’t think we spoke much on the ride because we were just in awe. The weather was perfect and we got to fly over Nashville.”

Melissa Hoeppner and Ethan August By Hollie Deese For Sumner County Publications

When Melissa Hoeppner and her fiancé, Ethan August*, knew they were going to be relocating to the area just a few months before they wanted to get married, they decided to just go ahead and plan a ceremony in Middle Tennessee. Of course, that is easier said than done. “It was definitely a challenge,” Hoeppner says. “I am from New York and Ethan is an Army brat and has lived all over. No one lived here at all really, so it was kind of crazy. I think the most difficult part was coordinating with all of the vendors.” Doubling up their home search with a venue search when they visited the area, they chose Epic Event Centre in Gallatin to have their ceremony and reception for 100 loved ones — none of whom lived here either. “That was one of the first places I looked at, and we knew that was it,” she says. “We loved the venue and loved the rustic feel of everything.” Hoeppner put her faith in the hands of her planner, Melissa Benter at Epic, as well as on-site caterer Chef Christopher. No easy feat considering the diversity of dietary restrictions and preferences that needed to be met. After all, she’s a vegan, he loves meat and there were also some shellfish and nut allergies in the group. But they still wanted traditional Southern fare. “My husband and I had to have a meeting of the minds ourselves, so I am impressed with how hard Chef Christopher worked to accommodate both of our requests,” she says. “He made me a vegan mac and cheese, which was really awesome of him to do, so he really went above and beyond.” Hoeppner relied heavily on Pinterest, and sharing ideas and images via email when she really wanted to be there in person to plot out her vision. “I think the hardest part was not being able to have any sort of face-toface interaction with people for an extended period of time,” she says. “It is not like I could just show up at the venue and have a conversation with somebody. A lot of times when you are trying to plan something this epic and this important, having a face-to-face conversation can really go a long way.” And even when the young couple did move to the area, they were still about an hour from the venue and their time was then spent finding accommodations for all of the incoming guests,

which posed yet another challenge for the young couple who looked for places close to both Gallatin and downtown Nashville so they could make a vacation of Music City. “We wanted them to experience Nashville and enjoy our wedding,” she says. “So we had the whole other separate challenge of trying to find a hotel that was close enough where you could take a cab to get there, close enough where you could get to downtown but not too far for the shuttle to come. But in the end, we ended up figuring it all out and no one wanted to leave.” Still, there are still things Hoeppner thinks she would have done differently had she been local when planning

things out, like choosing more songs or having a shot list for pictures. “I was really laid back about the whole thing because I didn’t want to drive myself crazy,” she says. “I also used to work for theknot.com, so I was really familiar with how psycho people can get. But I think the downside of me not being super organized, I felt like I missed a few things.” Hoeppner thinks brides should just trust their instincts, no matter where they live when planning the wedding. “I urge people to go with your gut instinct and do the best you can when putting your details together,” she says. (*For military security reasons, Ethan could not provide his last name.)

Couples have wealth of venue options By Hollie Deese For Sumner County Publications

A flip through any of the latest bridal magazines or carefully-curated Pinterest pages devoted to the topic and it is clear the trend of a rustic wedding at one with nature has not lost any of its appeal from last season. And Sumner County brides are lucky enough to have many gorgeous options right here. For any bride, the venue is a very important decision, and often one of the first things that needs to be decided so every other design, food and style decision can fall in line with the locale. The venue sets the tone for the entire wedding, and according to TheKnot.com’s annual Real Weddings Study of nearly 13,000 brides across the country in 2013, the average amount spent just on the venue was $13,385, up from $12,905 from the previous year.

OUTDOOR CHARM Barn-inspired weddings with exposed wood, mason jars and wildflowers rule, and brides have their pick of farm-based venues dedicated to showing off the absolute best Middle Tennessee has to offer. Amulet Farm (9539 Upper Station Camp Creek Road, Gallatin) hosts weddings, commitment ceremonies, or vow renewals in front of a charming barn, beside the expansive tree grove, in the farm’s field, or even on a stage in the fields under the moonlight. Animal lovers will enjoy the setting at The Barn on Willis Branch (1249 Willis Branch Road, Goodlettsville), a rustic, original horse barn that sits on seven acres of serene land. At the private Pick Inn (550 Zieglers Fort Road, Gallatin), owned by bluegrass legend Jesse McReynolds, guests can watch couples exchange vows in front of a hilltop cabin overlooking Old Hickory Lake. And at the nearby Rock Creek Farm (475 Dry Fork Creek Road, Gallatin), the bride can prepare for the day in a private two-bedroom guesthouse with full kitchen before tying the knot on the 35-acre functioning farm.

VINTAGE-INSPIRED Brides who like sweeping romances in a historic setting have just as many options, with old mansions drawing people from far beyond the area to take advantage of what we have right here. Hendersonville’s antebellum Hazel

The Barn on Willis Branch offers a rustic venue for weddings and receptions.

Path Mansion (105 Hazel Path Court, Hendersonville) was built in 1857 and features the original chandeliers shipped from Paris. The building was restored to its original condition in the early 1980s and is now on the National Register of Historic Homes. Nearby, Rock Castle (139 Rock Castle Lane, Hendersonville), people can take advantage of the 18-acre home on Old Hickory Lake, along with its stunning views at sunset. In Gallatin, The Grand Inheritance (198 Hix Lane, Gallatin) is just one of many historic homes available for couples to use for their weddings, a federal mansion among rolling hills.

HOTELS/CLUBS Of course, not every bride wants to take her chances with the elements and

an outdoor wedding, so indoor venues hold plenty of appeal of their own. And many of them still take advantage of lake views. Not only will people booking events at The Club at Fairvue Plantation (981 Plantation Blvd., Gallatin), still have the backdrop of the lake, but also have use of the 20,000-square-foot clubhouse. At the Bluegrass Yacht and Country Club (550 Johnny Cash Parkway, Hendersonville) there is also a lake setting with the safety of indoor facilities, and The Lighthouse ( 133 Sanders Ferry Road, Hendersonville) also offers lakeside celebrations. Of course, these are just a sampling of everything there is. See our list on the next page for more options from Hendersonville to White House.

Food trends for 2015 Food can be one of the most memorable and personal parts of a wedding — or it can be a forgettable plate of food that falls flat with guests. Here are a few trends we’ve noticed: BARBECUE BUFFETS Oozy macaroni and cheese, pulled pork barbecue, sweet cornbread rolls, braised greens — when local couples want to really show their loved ones the best of Middle Tennessee they are opting for traditional regional fare, sometimes with an upscale twist. FOOD TRUCKS Funky and fun couples are supplementing buffet stations with popular area food trucks , serving hungry guests with tasty tacos, wraps, cupcakes and more. MIDNIGHT SNACKS A few hours into a reception when guests are winding down from dancing and partying, couples have taken to passing out snacks before guests pack up and go home — think burger sliders and mini milkshakes or warm chocolate-chip cookies with flavored milk. THEME BARS Whether it’s a whiskey sampling station showing off some of the region’s best liquors, a candy bar extravaganza with tons of sweets, or even a mashed-potato table with tons of toppings and mix-ins, couples are personalizing their food tables with treats they truly love and want to share.

Delicious wedding trends

LAYERS OF LOVE Cakes and sweets for weddings, birthdays, showers and more.

CASTALIAN SPRINGS

Patty Russell Owner of the Gallatin-based Patty Cakes shares the top trends.

1. The Naked Cake or Barely There Cake. “The Naked Cake has frosting only between the layers and the Barely There Cake has a thin coating of frosting on the outside so that the cake shows through,” she says. Think beautiful golden cake layers with just the vibrant frosting in between showing through. 2. Metallics. The shiny stuff is very big right now, and not just in fashion — in icing, too. “An antique gold is the metallic of the moment, but copper is going to be a big color this year as well,” she says. 3. Cakes totally covered in sugar flowers. Perhaps inspired by Kim and Kanye’s wedding wall of flowers, Russell says the flowers can be sugar paste which is a bit more expensive, or simply piped on rosettes. Or even a mixture of both. Just be sure the buds cover the entire cake. 4. The end of fondant. Russell finds this one especially exciting. “I have always maintained that while fondant is beautiful — you simply cannot get a cake perfectly smooth without using fondant, though I get really close — a fluffy buttercream or cream cheese frosting is so much better on the palate,” she says. “Where fondant is stiff and chewy and sometimes even difficult to cut, a buttercream frosting melts that buttery and sugary goodness all inside your mouth!” — Hollie Deese

Italian baker’s desserts might upstage cake By Hollie Deese For Sumner County Publications

Laura Grassi grew up in Tuscany, Italy, helping out her father at the family bakery. It was a family tradition that went back in her family more than 100 years. And she would have stayed in Italy, too, but when her only daughter moved to Middle Tennessee with her husband and children, Grassi followed suit three years ago. Now, Grassi is settled in Gallatin and has resumed the family business, baking up sweet treats at home for lucky locals to purchase for pickup or delivery for more than a year now. “Once here, I felt like I wanted to share some of the things I had over there that I was used to making in our family as our traditions,” she says. That includes many of the more known Italian desserts like cream puffs, cannoli and tiramisu, both classic and with a spin. For instance, Laura’s Special Tiramisu is made with homemade meringues, profiteroles, creamy mascarpone and chocolate pieces and her torta di mela is the Italian version of classic apple pie. And people are really getting to know her Italian wedding cake, saker tarts, breads and focaccias, all made with Type 00 flour imported from Italy and fresh, local ingredients as much as possible. Like her family’s bakery in Tuscany where her father serviced area restaurants and pizzerias, Grassi sells wholesale, too, but isn’t quite going through the 3,000 pounds of flour her father did at the height of his business. Maybe if she opens a storefront her volume could change, and she admits it is something she thinks about. “I would love to have that and it would be so much easier because I just have so many different things that I make and everything I make is fresh,” she says. A storefront would also allow her to sell her sweets in smaller portions. For now, people need to order a minimum batch of each item, which makes it perfect for catering parties, special events and showers. And, they can order online for pickup or delivery. “People are into getting something that is not chain, more homemade and really good quality. To know that everything they get is really fresh and made locally. And not something that is frozen for weeks,” she says. “Just a really good product.

Booking a photographer who fits your style By Hollie Deese For Sumner County Publications

People put a lot of pressure on themselves to make sure they get the best pictures on their wedding day, and for good reason. It is probably going to be one of the more pricey affairs they’ll ever have on a day they look absolutely incredible. Good photographic documentation is necessary. Choosing a photographer whose work you love is easy — just look at their portfolio. But finding one who you won’t mind being around for maybe 8-10 hours, shooting intimate moments of the big day from getting dressed to first kiss, is another matter. That’s why meeting in person before booking is key to getting it right. “Communication with your photographer is the most important part of figuring out what you want and what you can expect,” says Anjeanette Ridner Hoer of Anjeanette Illustration Photography in Hendersonville. “See the photographers portfolio, meet up with ones you like, ask questions, just get to know them.”

In-your-face shots With the rise in popularity of candid shots, photographers can get pretty up close and personal with the couple and their guests. This can result in some incredible shots, but the sometimesaggressive style also can cause some seriously cranky guests. It’s best to know up front what to expect. “Each photographer will have their own shooting style, so it’s important to find out what will work with your wishes,” says Ridner Hoer. “Weddings are serious affairs as well as the largest parties of your life. Because of the emotional and serious nature of the commitment two people are making before their families, I do feel my job is to be a silent observer. I am there to record your memories and as such should not be in your face or conspicuous.” She will, however, make her-

self known when it comes time to wrangle groups together for the necessary posed shots and suggests groups get as many done before the service as possible in order to maximize celebration time. “I will potentially use my ‘mom’ voice so that your time is handled smoothly and efficiently and you can be on your way to a cake and dancing,” she says.

Cell phone use Over the past decade there has been a new and highly invasive guests at weddings, and that is cell phones. Love them or hate them, they are not going away, although some brides are asking guests to not use them during the ceremony, some even going so far as to have guests check their phones. Some want guests to be present in the moment. Others don’t want social media flooded with images before the reception even starts. But many more couples are realizing that a guest with a cell phone can ruin any number of key moments from the wedding, a wedding they are paying a

decent amount of money to a professional to capture for them. “Many memories have been ruined with excited relatives snapping away with camera flashes,” she says. “I may not be able to Photoshop out a large pink bedazzled iPad from the front of your first kiss.” She has even shot a wedding where a well-meaning relative videotaped the entire ceremony with his phone — by standing directly behind the officiant. “There was no way for me to discreetly ask him to shift a bit, and so he is in every single ceremony photo,” she says. “His phone is literally right between their heads.” Instead, she suggests guests save the camera phones for the reception when all the action happens and the photographer can’t possibly catch it all.

Preparing a Plan B Even the best laid plans can be derailed, and the weather can be the top wild card for brides who attempt an outdoor affair. That’s why it is important to

choose a photographer who can quickly adjust. “Check with your venue for rain or inclement weather spots and double check that there are also various spots for wedding photos and ceremony areas that you like,” Ridner Hoer says. “Another outdoor concern is bright sun and harsh shadows if you get married at high noon. Make sure your photographer has experience with a variety of weather and indoor or outdoor lighting conditions.” She says to ask for photo samples from weddings in similar situations to yours and take into account the time of day for the ceremony. If all else fails, she comes equipped with pretty umbrellas and a positive attitude. “Know that something weird will happen on your day,” she says. “Some little thing may not work, or someone may be late. The schedule is probably going to run over somewhere at some point. A candle may not light. Deep breaths — it’s all going to be beautiful. Remind yourself that nothing silly like that is going to destroy your wedding.”

BREEZY BALL GOWNS

UP-TOP DRAMA

CLEAN CHIC For many brides, less is so much more, especially if wedding day dreams never included a princess-like ball gown. Once relegated to destination beach weddings, simple and modest will be found at all kinds of ceremonies in 2015. Strapless long chiffon dress with ruched bodice, $149 at David’s Bridal.

Shoulders, necklines, capelets — anything to draw the eye closer to the face will work. This year details and necklines are strong with embellishments, but still sleek and sophisticated. Do not expect a return of the ’80s shoulder poufs. Truly Zac Posen Collection lace and tulle ball gown with illusion neckline, $1,350 at David’s Bridal.

Ball gowns are not going away, and this year they will be fluffier than ever, with more air incorporated into the material for an even more ethereal effect. White by Vera Wang tossed tulle ball gown with embroidered bodice, $1,398 at David’s Bridal.

COLOR-TINGED CROP TOPS No, we are not talking inches of skin and a visible belly button. Bridal looks this season are taking a page from Taylor Swift’s more modest approach to showing off the midriff. Flattering on many women, just a peek like the one on this new DB Studio Collection two tank crop and fit n’ flare skirt, $229 at David’s Bridal, is just enough.

White and ivory are certainly always going to be the go-to choices for most brides, but more and more women are opting for soft hues that are a nod to their independent ways. It’s probably the only occasion soft pink can be looked at as a bit subversive. White by Vera Wang taffeta ball gown with contrasting tulle overlay, $899.99 at David’s Bridal.

Bridal hair is all Now THIS is my about romance kind of PARTY!

By Hollie Deese

For Sumner County Publications

For most women there is no day more romantic than their wedding day. A culmination of childhood dreams and real-life love, the event is marked with beautiful moments that will live on in memories and photos for years. And there is nothing more beautiful

than the bride herself, her hair an integral part of the look. “This year I expect to see a lot of similarities in hair styling as last year,” says Tara Steele of Cheveux Salon and Spa in Hendersonville. A bride herself in 2013, Steele says brides are opting for less done looks and instead choosing more relaxed, pretty styles. Here’s her top four picks for 2015:

BOHO WAVES

As long as they are relaxed and not too severe, brides still love updo’s this year. “I expect to see a lot of updo’s mimicking those of the Golden Globe red carpet,” she says. Sleek styles stay relaxed with tousled bangs or sleek or loose chignons.

“Unlike past years, the fixed perfect, large barrel waves are phasing out,” she says. “A more tussled natural look is more desired.” Steele says this goes for color, too.

ROMANTIC WAVES

“From bling to boho, I expect to see more wearing them on the forehead to the crown,” Steele says. And it isn’t just brides opting for the style. “Along with headbands, bridal parties and brides are sporting flower crowns of every size,” she says.

Think 1940s flair with loose curls that hug the face in an “S” or finger wave. “This is accented beautifully with an heirloom broach or pin in the hair,” she says.

Celebrity brides lead 2015 bouquet trends By Hollie Deese For Sumner County Publications

All eyes are on the bride on her wedding day, as it should be. And that is especially true for celebrities who have every trip to the supermarket analyzed, much less her big day. So when it comes to details like bouquets, their choices can cause a ripple effect for brides the following year. There were lots of high-profile nuptials that took place in 2014 that are sure to influence bride style in 2015. Here are some of the best.

BOLD RED Love or hate radio host and comedienne Jenny McCarthy, when she married actor Donnie Wahlberg outside Chicago on Aug. 31, her bright, bold bouquet of all-red roses stood out in a very good way against her sharp white gown. It’s a return to a classic look that has taken a back seat in recent years.

ALL WHITE When longtime bachelor George Clooney became engaged to refined lawyer Amal Alamuddin, she went from anonymous to ubiquitous in a snap. On her September wedding day, she lived up to all the attention in a custom-designed Oscar de la Renta gown — one of his last creations before dying in October just weeks after their wedding. Her all-white bouquet was just as refined and classic.

FLOWING GREENS Singer Solange Knowles was in no way in her sister Beyonce’s shadow when she got married to Alan Ferguson in New Orleans on Nov. 16. Everyone, guests and wedding party included, all wore different shades of white along with the bride, and the bouquet she attached to her bicycle was full of loose neutral blooms and cascading greens.

Jessa Duggar had a toned-down pop of color, like this Vera Wang Bouquet from FTD.

RUSTIC PASTELS Jessa Duggar and Ben Seewald’s November wedding in Bentonville, Ark., was captured for the cameras of TLC’s hit show “19 Kids and Counting,” and even though it won’t air until next month, fans have all been privy to pictures from her rustic wedding, including her bouquet with different shades of peaches and neutrals mixed with greens for a wildflower feel.

Whether you need a little help or a lot By Hollie Deese For Sumner County Publications

If you want your event to go as smoothly as possible — and without any family members having to pitch in on the big day — it is best to hire an event planner who knows exactly what to do to ensure a problem-free party. So while you focus on the vision, let them focus on the details and together the day will be picture perfect.

If you’ve ever been put to work at a wedding for a loved one when you were only prepared to enjoy yourself as guest, you can probably bet the happy couple didn’t invest in a wedding planner. But you don’t have to have a big budget to afford help making your wedding day as smooth as possible. A wide variety of services are available in Sumner County, from a company that will take care of everything to someone who can step in to coordinate your hard work come wedding day.

VENUE SERVICES Most local venues will help coordinate everything from florists to party essential rentals, and many will have preferred vendors they will offer up for you to choose from, or is some cases insist you use. And all of the coordination is handled in house. At The Lighthouse Wedding and Event Center on Old Hickory Lake in Hendersonville, they handle rehearsal dinners, weddings, receptions and special parties and events on a four-acre property dedicated to hosting big affairs, so they have wedding day details down to a science. They handle their own catering and have a variety of preferred vendors to choose from but allow couples to book their own with an additional fee. At Rock Creek Farm in Gallatin, wedding packages for 100 guests start at $14,300 for 2015 and includes all the planning, food, cake, flowers, lighting, flowers, cleanup, take-down and more. Basically, pick your preferences and show up on the big day.

CHURCH OFFERINGS Many area churches offer wedding coordination services for their members when they use their facilities for the reception, some even offering in-house catering and more. When you get engaged and want to involve your church, find out what they offer. However, there are even churches in the area who don’t require membership to be booked for your big day. At Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in Hendersonville, non-members have the opportunity to book the beautiful building for their wedding. The chapel seats 80 and their reception hall can seat 200.

be a bonding experience among loved ones as women and their friends sit around the night before the wedding putting together bouquets. It may seem like you can take everything on yourself, and when it comes to the prep work that may be true. But even brides who do all the planning themselves before the

big day can hand off everything to someone to make sure the vision comes together on the day of the event. And make sure the bride’s cousins aren’t plating food that was just dropped off. By enlisting help — and far enough in advance — your special day is sure to go off without a hitch.

Registries a mix of experiences, items By Hollie Deese For Sumner County Publications

As the national average age of couples continues to rise — a 2013 report from the National Marriage Project put the median age for women at nearly 27; for men, almost 29 — people enter into a union not needing to register for the typical household necessities younger couples just out of college haven’t even thought about needing yet.

EXPERIENCES What loved one wouldn’t want to help create some of your earliest memories as a couple. Websites like sokindregistry.com and bettereverafter.com allow couples to register for things like dancing lessons, event tickets, wine tastings and hot air balloon adventures either on their honeymoon of after they get back. Couples can even register for the honeymoon itself. ELECTRONICS Thanks to rapidly-evolving advances in technology, everyone has a television or two that needed to be upgraded years ago. Now’s the time to pick out the best because sites like theknot.com help guide couples in setting up a page so multiple people can chip in on a pricey gift. EXTRAS Sure, you’ve got silverware and plates, but what about serving platters and bar carts? Now is the time to pick out a few key pieces you can use as you entertain family and friends more often. Vases, trays, towels and more are items that add layer to your décor. Couples should have a wide range of options for their guests to choose from, with plenty of items in the $25 range. Many people hang on tradition and won’t want anything to do with going in on a flat screen and love the idea of getting something to help start newlyweds in their new home together. Plus, it’s fun to get your fiancé, grab the retailer’s scanning gun and just go to town scanning items. Scan more than you think you’ll need. It won’t look greedy — guests really do love options.

PAYING FOR THE BIG DAY By Hollie Deese, For Sumner County Publications

Couples who get married in Sumner County spend between $18,809 and $31,349 on average, according to CostofWedding.com. The wedding site, which also found that nearly half of the couples getting married spend less than $10,000, bases its survey on samples from nearly 4,000 weddings from across the country the previous year. This average wedding cost is based on a guest tally of 149-169. Each additional guest can add between $142 and $174 on average. And the cost in many cases falls on the parents.

»BUDGET FROM 24

AREA AVERAGE WEDDING DAY COSTS

In fact, Paula DeBerry, Sumner County president of Commerce Union Bank, says that in her experience most wedding loans are to the parents of the bride or groom and normally run $25,000-$50,000. “Most parents will set up a line of credit secured by a second mortgage on their home, so they can have longer terms to pay out the debt,” she says. “Most sit down with their children at the early planning stages and set a maximum budget.” DeBerry says that if the couple plans to pay for the wedding themselves determining a budget may depend on how they plan to pay. “Credit cards are not normally a good option because the rate is so high and very little of the monthly payment goes toward reduction of the principal amount,” she says. Instead, DeBerry says the bank has other options. “If they go to a bank for an unsecured loan the normal payback period for most banks is 24-36 months. Because there is no collateral involved, the term is shorter,” she says. DeBerry says to qualify for an unsecured loan the credit criteria is normally more stringent, meaning higher credit scores and lower debt to income be required. If people apply to a bank for a secured loan, the term of the loan would be determined by the collateral. “For example, pledging real estate as collateral will get you longer terms, and if you pledge a vehicle the term will be based on the age of the vehicle up to 60 months,” she says.

CURRENT RATES DeBerry says rates on consumer loans at most banks are set monthly, but can change daily, and are based on the collateral. Second mortgage loans can start at 4.25 percent and unsecured loans can go as high as 12 percent. DeBerry says it is better to save than to take out a long-term loan for a one-time event. “If it is hard to save for the event, it will be as equally as hard to make a payment,” she says. “We see people save for specific events all the time such as a Christmas club account or college fund. The reason most of these type accounts work is because they are specific and normally they have something set up automatically coming out of their paycheck. Also, these accounts normally have more rules and it is harder to withdraw except at specific times, so you tend to save more.” Figuring out what you can really afford is the only way to start.

GETTY IMAGES/ISTOCKPHOTO

“Sit down, make a budget of your monthly expenses now or how they will increase once you are married,” she says. “Once all these are paid each month look at how much spendable income will be left for an additional debt service.” With that number, you can then decide if a big wedding is worth another large additional monthly payment, of if

a smaller wedding with smaller expenditure is better. “Couples that go through this thought process normally determine for themselves how much they are willing to spend fairly quickly on a wedding,” DeBerry says. Ultimately, good credit is a gift couples will never regret giving each other since it will help them achieve dreams far beyond the wedding day.

“For couples starting out, protect your credit history and credit scores by paying on time and not over extending because throughout your lifetime you will buy a lot of cars, homes, etc. and having a good credit history will definitely help you achieve all your dreams.”

For those interested in local architecture while searching for a venue to hold a small event like a shower or anniversary party, Thistletop Inn Bed and Breakfast in Goodlettsville offers just the thing. and large, wood beams set on an 11-acre property. Current owners Fred and Mary Jane Peace were so charmed by the property on a visit to Nashville from Atlanta in 2006 they had to buy it. “It’s a work of art and we decided we had to live here a while,” Mary Jane Peace said of Dixon’s work, which is nationally celebrated. “He spent two years building it so he put a lot of love in this house, and it’s one of his favorite properties.” For a while Thistletop was just a home for them, but in February 2009, they opened two rooms in the house for

guests, in addition to a carriage house out back and barn-turned-music studio, making Thistletop a favored retreat for actors and musicians. “We could easily have more than that, but our intent for the bed-and-breakfast is to really keep this private,” she said. “We really wanted this to be almost a spiritual experience, which it is for a lot of people.” Not your typical bed-and-breakfast, the house is made all from reclaimed materials and built in perfect balance with nature, bringing the outdoors in

While they don’t host weddings, they do accommodate small private parties and celebrations for groups around 15 people, making it an intimate space for a baby shower or anniversary party, and some local businesses have come to love using the on-site meeting spaces to shake up the usual brainstorming sessions. For instance, the wood-and-stone Mesa Room features a table for 12, sofa and chairs for six, a media center with flat screen TV and DVD and Wi-Fi and has its own outside entrance and half bath. The separate Elysian carriage house is bordered by 40 acres and makes a great retreat for couples who want to celebrate a special anniversary. “The property is just magical, it really is,” she said. “This is your escape from the world. This is where you come to recharge. And I think everyone does leave this house feeling that they have accomplished that. We really love our guests and that we want them to have the best experience ever.”

‘Frozen’ still tops girl party themes By Hollie Deese For Sumner County Publications

It has been more than 15 months and countless You Tube covers of “Let It Go” since the release of Disney’s animated “Frozen,” and Sumner County kids still can’t get enough of the winter-themed film. Luckily, they can celebrate their birthday just like Anna and Elsa in Gallatin, sans the snow, of course. Amanda Morel, owner of Giggles Cuts for Kids Mini Spa and Salon in Gallatin, started hosting “Frozen” princess children’s parties in November and never thought they would become as popular as they are now. “We started doing “Frozen” makeover parties in the salon to introduce the new party theme. Now, every party that I book has been ‘Frozen,’ ” Morel says. “We did one, and then did two more and every event I did sold out in a couple of hours after announcing it, and it was just crazy. We did three ‘Frozen’ parties last Saturday, we have three more this Saturday, and there are six more we booked in the last week.” At Giggles, like any party place, booking at least two to three weeks out is preferred as is encouraging everyone to RSVP as she has seen plenty of hosts surprised in the past by extra children who did not RSVP. “We never thought we would be doing so many parties,” Morel says of the children’s salon and spa. “They love the themes, they love the events, they love the parties, they like the social aspect. It is a group thing going on where they can all be together, socialize and have fun.” And why wait for a birthday to celebrate? Launching next month is a Friday night pajama party drop from 6-9:30 p.m. where parents can bring their kids by Giggles in their pajamas and leave them there for pizza, karaoke and a movie while they leave to go spend some adult time for a few hours without the kids. “We will have pillows and blankets and feed them pizza, cupcakes, drinks,” she says. “They can get their hair done, makeup, and then we will do karaoke and then watch a movie. I am really excited about that and think it will be a ton of fun.”
