TOCK COMS

Spend less time cleaning, more time enjoying your new home

H

ouse cleaning is a chore few people relish. And once you’re settled in your new home, the last thing you want is to spend all your spare time on domestic chores. You want to personalize your space, throw a backyard barbecue and settle into a routine. While house cleaning can be monotonous and timeconsuming, ignoring it altogether can leave you with a much larger mess to tackle later. Here are some timesaving strategies to keep the mess to a minimum and give you more time to enjoy yourself.

DO THE DISHES AFTER EVERY MEAL A sink full of dishes can make the kitchen look like a mess, and letting dishes pile up increases the risk of attracting bugs. Though it might seem like a chore, staying on top of dishes actually reduces your workload. If you’re

lucky enough to have an automatic dishwasher, load dishes directly into the dishwasher instead of putting dirty items into the sink. PROTECT YOUR MICROWAVE The inside of the microwave can get dirty rather quickly. Heating up snacks or quick meals may result in spills and splatter. To cut down on cleaning time, stack several paper towels on the turntable. If a spill occurs, just discard the top paper towel for an easy clean up. SWITCH YOUR SOAP Glycerin or liquid soaps do not have traditional binders that are in many bar soaps. Without the binders — which are the primary cause of soap scum — you will have much less

14 | TENNESSEE HOMES | JUNE - JULY 2013 | www.Tennessean.com/TNHomes

soap scum to contend with in showers and sinks. To further cut down on soap scum, use a small, flexible squeegee to wipe down tile walls and glass doors after each shower. WORK FROM THE TOP DOWN Dust and dirt settles at the lowest levels. Avoid messing up what you have just cleaned by beginning any cleaning task high up and moving downward. Therefore, dust shelves and cobwebs from ceiling corners first, then tackle tables and other surfaces before ultimately cleaning the floors. CONCENTRATE ON ONE ROOM AT A TIME Some people suffer from cleaning attention deficit disorder. This means they’ll begin one task and then go into another room for something and start a new task. Focus on one room at a time to save time. You will do a more thorough job with less frustration. ESTABLISH A DROP ZONE Foyers tend to accumulate a lot of clutter. Organize the space so you’re less tempted to drop items as soon as you come in the door. Keep a recycling bin (or shredder) handy for dealing with junk mail. Have a coat rack for hats, coats and umbrellas. Keep a basket handy so that you can transport items that belong in other rooms in the house.

GET TY IMA GES

DO LAUNDRY THROUGHOUT THE WEEK Invest in a hamper that enables you to sort clothing into different compartments, including lights, darks and delicates. This way the sorting is already done when it comes time for washing. Then aim to do a load as often as you can so that you’re not faced with 100 pounds of laundry when the weekend rolls around. EVERYDAY HOUSEHOLD CLEANING PRODUCTS Two kitchen staples — baking soda and vinegar — are the workhorses of many cleaning projects. A mix of baking soda and vinegar can open a clogged drain and lend freshness to towels and linens when added to the wash. A paste of baking soda can often scour tough stains, like marker, while vinegar has been used to neutralize odors from pet accidents. THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX A can of Coca-Cola can be effective at cleaning the ring in the toilet. An unsweetened package of Kool-Aid brand lemonade can be used to freshen and clean an empty dishwasher. The citric acid will scour the inside and get rid of any scaling or hard-water stains. Cleaning is a task that may not be enjoyable, but it is a necessity. By keeping on top of the mess, you can save time in the long run and have more time to do what you really enjoy. — Metro Editorial Service

R = Reward schools. Reward schools are made up of the top 5 percent of schools in the state for performance—as measured by overall student achievement levels—and the top 5 percent for year-over-year progress—as measured by gains in student achievement. These 10 percent of schools receive recognition for their success under the accountability system. P = Priority schools. Priority schools are in the bottom 5 percent of overall performance across tested grades and subjects. These schools will receive one of four types of supports: • Placement in the state-run Achievement School District • Turnaround under the governance of a district-led Innovation Zone • Turnaround through one of the federal School Improvement Grant plans, subject to state approval • District-led school improvement planning processes, subject to direct ASD intervention in the absence of improved results. F = Focus schools. Focus schools are the 10 percent of schools across the state with the largest achievement gaps between groups of students. This designation does not indicate low achievement levels. In fact, focus schools may be highperforming schools that show significant year-over-year gains, but fail to close gaps between groups of students. Focus schools will address underperforming groups by: • Implementing programs targeted at specific subgroups of students • Applying for competitive Focus school grants aimed at closing achievement gaps • Using state resources, if necessary, to help fund programming to spur subgroup growth.) O = Other. The 75 percent of schools in the middle of the scale. Note: Reward, Priority and Focus schools represent 25 percent of Tennessee schools. Schools labeled as Other are not in the top 10 percent of schools (Reward), nor are they in the bottom 5 percent (Priority). They also are not among the 10 percent of schools in the state with the highest achievement gaps (Focus).

SUMNER

Planned growth, an eye on the future With one of the best high schools in the state, a new mass transit plan in the works, a growing health-care infrastructure and a wealth of recreational opportunities, Sumner County has plenty to brag about. This area just northeast of Nashville offers a quality of life that many new-home buyers find attractive. Residents here enjoy the hometown feel of cities like Gallatin and Hendersonville but appreciate the nearby big-city perks of Nashville. EDUCATION The county’s largest city, Hendersonville, is home to Merrol Hyde Magnet School, named the third best high school in Tennessee in U.S. News & World Report’s most recent ranking of America’s Best High Schools. Gallatin (the county seat) is home to Volunteer State Community College, a public two-year college that offers associate degrees, certificates and continuing education opportunities. With more than 70 academic programs and classes offered on site and online, Vol State is an educational and economic asset to Sumner County and the entire region. HEALTH CARE Sumner County is home to three medical facilities: Hendersonville Medical Center, Sumner Regional Medical Center in Gallatin and Northcrest Medical Center in Springfield. Sumner Regional opened a new dedicated pediatric unit in late 2011, and Hendersonville Medical Center kicked off a $3-million expansion of its critical care unit in September of last year. HMC is also accredited to assess and treat chest pain and joint problems. RECREATION The Gallatin area is a sportsman’s paradise; fishing and boating opportunities abound along the county’s many miles of shoreline on Old Hickory Lake, as do lakefront homes. The Gallatin Civic Center has a double gym, indoor pool and racquetball courts. Dog owners can let their pets run free at Triple Creek Park in Gallatin. Hendersonville has an extensive system of greenway biking and walking trails with plans to expand its bike trail system. Several golf courses dot the county, including Country Hills Golf Course and Bluegrass Yacht & Country Club (both in Hendersonville), and The Club at Fairvue Plantation and Long Hollow Golf Course (both in Gallatin). GROWTH The Gallatin City Council has given the green light to a first-of-its-kind community in the area: a transit-ready development. Greensboro North will be a mixed-use community built to offer ready access to Metro Nashville’s regional transportation system, which includes plans for a northeast corridor transit line stretching from Gallatin to East Nashville. Initial plans for the community include a

Through careful planning and sustained economic growth, Sumner County continues to build on its existing assets, which helps it attract more workers, more residents and more business. It’s easy to see why home buyers and builders find this an appealing place to live, work, play and do business.

Open floor plans appeal to new home buyers

T

he Spring Hill housing market remains on the upswing, and John Maher Builders continues to lead the way as the developer of the city’s best-selling community: Wade’s Grove. Having sold more than 1,700 homes in the Spring Hill area — more than twice as many as any other builder in Spring Hill — John Maher Builders is at the forefront of what is trending to be another housing boom for the city. According to company President John Maher, homes with open floor plans — like those available in Wade’s Grove — have found appeal with a wide range of buyers in recent months. “When buyers walk in the door, they want to experience that open feel, and our Wade’s Grove homes certainly offer that,” says Maher. “No matter the square footage, the space is completely maximized with an open floor plan. The rooms feel spacious and open. Maher says prospective buyers can easily imagine themselves living life in the open space these homes provide. From comfortably hosting large gatherings for friends and family to everyday activities like cooking, doing homework or watching television, these floor plans allow families to manage activities

The kitchen in this John Maher home is designed to accommodate modern lifestyles. Floor plans like the Brady, pictured here, offer open space where family members and guests can interact while carrying out a variety of activities. SUBMITTED

together — in the same space. Wade’s Grove homeowner Stephanie Anderson is pleased with the kitchen space in her home. “I love that I can be in the kitchen preparing a meal and still feel like I am a part of the activity,” says Anderson. “Having a kitchen that opens to the great room is ideal.” Another Wade’s Grove resident, Danielle Spencer, says she was able to host holiday festivities with ease. “We must have had 15 people in our home over the holidays,” says Spencer. “The great space planning in the layout of the kitchen and great room allowed us all to be together comfortably.” In order to accommodate the growing popularity of the Wade’s Grove community, John Maher Builders has added several selections to the company’s offering of floor plans. Open floor plans like the Kaylee, Brady and Litton are popular with buyers. The Kaylee features four bedrooms with the master and at least one other bedroom on the first floor. It also offers a large bonus room upstairs and a tucked-away play or study room adjacent to one of the upstairs bedrooms. The Brady plan includes four bed-

rooms, with the master suite and an additional bedroom on the main floor. The plan features a vaulted great room that opens to a spacious kitchen and a breakfast nook with a beautiful bay window. The second floor of the Brady offers a cozy loft, large guest suite, additional bedroom with bonus storage and a generous bonus room. With a spacious front porch and optional screened back porch, the Litton plan offers outdoor living space in addition to the open interior. “Our Wade’s Grove home plans are all about livability,” says Maher. He says the homes offered at Wade’s Grove are designed to perfectly complement the lifestyle of today’s homeowner. “The homes in this community offer the very best value in plans that will adapt to the changing needs of our buyers,” says Maher. Wade’s Grove homes include standard features like sanded and finished hardwood floors in the main living areas, stainless appliances and granite kitchen countertops. Wade’s Grove also boasts wonderful community amenities, including wide sidewalks and — at 30 by 60 feet — one of the largest community pools in the Spring Hill area.

“We really believe in designing a community from a comprehensive standpoint,” says Maher. “Every decision is made with the community as a whole in mind. The recently completed amenities of Wade’s Grove give residents opportunities to form a real community here.” John Maher Builders develops masterplanned communities in Spring Hill and Thompson’s Station. New homes are now available in Benevento, Bridgemore Village, Spring Hill Place and Wade’s Grove. Prices range from the low $200,000s to $500,000. Custom single-family homes — most with masters down — are available with three, four or five bedrooms and bonus rooms. Exteriors include all-brick, stone, natural wood and wood shutters. The open floor plans with cutting-edge designs are perfect for empty nesters or growing families. Select home sites are also available for custom builds in premier communities.

Protect possessions during your move

T

he average American makes 11.7 moves during their lifetime, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. That’s about one in six people pulling up stakes each year. With so many people on the move to new homes, new cities and new opportunities, it’s important to protect your household items while they are in transit or in storage, says Charles Valinotti, head of product and underwriting with insurer QBE. Your homeowner’s insurance policy will protect personal possessions, whether they’re located in your house or in a moving truck. But Valinotti cautions there may be a time limit attached to the coverage, such as a 30-day period, and your policy may only cover up to certain dollar limits on property being moved or stored. “Ask your agent to explain the level of coverage, what exactly is covered and confirm that your items are insured if you have to store them,” says Valinotti. Other points to keep in mind as you hit the road to your new home: • If you’re using a professional moving company or shipper, verify that they’re insured and bonded to cover damage they may be responsible for. Valinotti says to keep in mind most movers limit their responsibility to basic damage amounts. “You may want to check into buying additional insurance to make sure you’re adequately covered during your move.”

• If you’re packing and moving yourself with a rented truck, take a look at your auto insurance policy. Many policies will cover rental trucks, but only up to a certain weight. “Don’t assume your policy covers you when you’re behind the wheel of a 26-foot, 13,000-pound moving truck,” he says. • If you’re handling the move yourself, careful packing is critical. It’s also necessary to keep your property locked up and secured along the way. • Note the condition of your items being relocated. Then if you have a claim, the condition of your possessions will be documented. • Know the value of high-dollar items that will be making the move. “Make a list of everything,” Valinotti suggests. “Take photos and, if necessary, get appraisals of these items before the move.” Valinotti says before a move is a good time to review your overall insurance coverage to make sure you’re adequately covered and whether you need to increase your limits. “A good look at insurance coverage every couple of years is something everyone should do,” he says. “And you don’t have to wait until you’re ready to pack up and relocate.” — Brandpoint Content

Come home to pastoral living If you’re looking for peaceful country living that is just a stone’s throw from the city, look at Cheatham County. With wooded hillsides, open farmland, and scenic rivers and lakes, the area offers an attractive and pastoral setting. The communities of Kingston Springs, Pegram, Pleasant View and Ashland City provide residents with a neighborly feel despite the county’s rapid expansion. Plentiful, affordable housing is found throughout the county, with choices of suburban or rural settings. Residents have the best of both worlds: a serene setting with easy access to city life and jobs. Sidewalks and lighting have given downtown Kingston Springs a sleek new look. Local restaurants include Red Tree Coffee. Because of numerous community events, residents have many opportunities to meet throughout the year. Pegram is a great place to raise a family and is quaintly referred to as “The Pretty Little Town of Pegram.” The town has its own special treasures.
