Spend less time cleaning, more time enjoying your new home

ouse cleaning is a chore few people relish. And once you’re settled in your new home, the last thing you want is to spend all your spare time on domestic chores. You want to personalize your space, throw a backyard barbecue and settle into a routine. While house cleaning can be monotonous and timeconsuming, ignoring it altogether can leave you with a much larger mess to tackle later. Here are some timesaving strategies to keep the mess to a minimum and give you more time to enjoy yourself.

DO THE DISHES AFTER EVERY MEAL A sink full of dishes can make the kitchen look like a mess, and letting dishes pile up increases the risk of attracting bugs. Though it might seem like a chore, staying on top of dishes actually reduces your workload. If you’re

lucky enough to have an automatic dishwasher, load dishes directly into the dishwasher instead of putting dirty items into the sink. PROTECT YOUR MICROWAVE The inside of the microwave can get dirty rather quickly. Heating up snacks or quick meals may result in spills and splatter. To cut down on cleaning time, stack several paper towels on the turntable. If a spill occurs, just discard the top paper towel for an easy clean up. SWITCH YOUR SOAP Glycerin or liquid soaps do not have traditional binders that are in many bar soaps. Without the binders — which are the primary cause of soap scum — you will have much less

soap scum to contend with in showers and sinks. To further cut down on soap scum, use a small, flexible squeegee to wipe down tile walls and glass doors after each shower. WORK FROM THE TOP DOWN Dust and dirt settles at the lowest levels. Avoid messing up what you have just cleaned by beginning any cleaning task high up and moving downward. Therefore, dust shelves and cobwebs from ceiling corners first, then tackle tables and other surfaces before ultimately cleaning the floors. CONCENTRATE ON ONE ROOM AT A TIME Some people suffer from cleaning attention deficit disorder. This means they’ll begin one task and then go into another room for something and start a new task. Focus on one room at a time to save time. You will do a more thorough job with less frustration. ESTABLISH A DROP ZONE Foyers tend to accumulate a lot of clutter. Organize the space so you’re less tempted to drop items as soon as you come in the door. Keep a recycling bin (or shredder) handy for dealing with junk mail. Have a coat rack for hats, coats and umbrellas. Keep a basket handy so that you can transport items that belong in other rooms in the house.

DO LAUNDRY THROUGHOUT THE WEEK Invest in a hamper that enables you to sort clothing into different compartments, including lights, darks and delicates. This way the sorting is already done when it comes time for washing. Then aim to do a load as often as you can so that you’re not faced with 100 pounds of laundry when the weekend rolls around. EVERYDAY HOUSEHOLD CLEANING PRODUCTS Two kitchen staples — baking soda and vinegar — are the workhorses of many cleaning projects. A mix of baking soda and vinegar can open a clogged drain and lend freshness to towels and linens when added to the wash. A paste of baking soda can often scour tough stains, like marker, while vinegar has been used to neutralize odors from pet accidents. THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX A can of Coca-Cola can be effective at cleaning the ring in the toilet. An unsweetened package of Kool-Aid brand lemonade can be used to freshen and clean an empty dishwasher. The citric acid will scour the inside and get rid of any scaling or hard-water stains. Cleaning is a task that may not be enjoyable, but it is a necessity. Planned growth, an eye on the future With one of the best high schools in the state, a new mass transit plan in the works, a growing health-care infrastructure and a wealth of recreational opportunities, Sumner County has plenty to brag about. This area just northeast of Nashville offers a quality of life that many new-home buyers find attractive. Residents here enjoy the hometown feel of cities like Gallatin and Hendersonville but appreciate the nearby big-city perks of Nashville. EDUCATION The county’s largest city, Hendersonville, is home to Merrol Hyde Magnet School, named the third best high school in Tennessee in U.S. News & World Report’s most recent ranking of America’s Best High Schools. Gallatin (the county seat) is home to Volunteer State Community College, a public two-year college that offers associate degrees, certificates and continuing education opportunities. With more than 70 academic programs and classes offered on site and online, Vol State is an educational and economic asset to Sumner County and the entire region. HEALTH CARE Sumner County is home to three medical facilities: Hendersonville Medical Center, Sumner Regional Medical Center in Gallatin and Northcrest Medical Center in Springfield. Sumner Regional opened a new dedicated pediatric unit in late 2011, and Hendersonville Medical Center kicked off a $3-million expansion of its critical care unit in September of last year. HMC is also accredited to assess and treat chest pain and joint problems. RECREATION The Gallatin area is a sportsman’s paradise; fishing and boating opportunities abound along the county’s many miles of shoreline on Old Hickory Lake, as do lakefront homes. The Gallatin Civic Center has a double gym, indoor pool and racquetball courts. Dog owners can let their pets run free at Triple Creek Park in Gallatin. Hendersonville has an extensive system of greenway biking and walking trails with plans to expand its bike trail system. Several golf courses dot the county, including Country Hills Golf Course and Bluegrass Yacht & Country Club (both in Hendersonville), and The Club at Fairvue Plantation and Long Hollow Golf Course (both in Gallatin). GROWTH The Gallatin City Council has given the green light to a first-of-its-kind community in the area: a transit-ready development. Greensboro North will be a mixed-use community built to offer ready access to Metro Nashville’s regional transportation system, which includes plans for a northeast corridor transit line stretching from Gallatin to East Nashville. Initial plans for the community include a

Vehicle Registration/ Emissions Testing Before a vehicle can be registered in Sumner County, it must first pass an emissions test. Residents are required to bring their vehicles, a current registration or title and a $10 testing fee (cash only, no bills larger than $20) to the Sumner County testing station, located just off Highway 31E/Nashville Pike at 951 Grassland Place. Hours are 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday-Friday, 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Tuesday and 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday. Driver’s License The Williamson County Driver’s License Station is located at 3830 Carothers Parkway in Franklin. Hours are 7 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, with the exception of the second Wednesday of each month, when the station opens at 8 a.m. For information, call 790-5515. Williamson County residents do not have to apply for or renew their driver’s licenses at this station. Tennessee residents may apply for a driver’s license at any driver’s license testing station, not just the one in the county in which they live.

Vehicle Registration, Emissions Testing Before a vehicle can be registered in Williamson County, it must first pass an emissions test. Residents are required to bring their vehicles, a current registration or title and a $10 testing fee (cash only, no bills larger than $20) to the Williamson County Emissions Testing Center, located at 1005 Merylinger Court in Franklin. The center is open 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Tuesday, 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday-Friday and 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays. Registration and Tags Williamson County residents are required to register their vehicles through the Williamson County Clerk of Court. Protect possessions during your move

he average American makes 11.7 moves during their lifetime, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. That’s about one in six people pulling up stakes each year. With so many people on the move to new homes, new cities and new opportunities, it’s important to protect your household items while they are in transit or in storage, says Charles Valinotti, head of product and underwriting with insurer QBE. Your homeowner’s insurance policy will protect personal possessions, whether they’re located in your house or in a moving truck. But Valinotti cautions there may be a time limit attached to the coverage, such as a 30-day period, and your policy may only cover up to certain dollar limits on property being moved or stored. “Ask your agent to explain the level of coverage, what exactly is covered and confirm that your items are insured if you have to store them,” says Valinotti. Other points to keep in mind as you hit the road to your new home: • If you’re using a professional moving company or shipper, verify that they’re insured and bonded to cover damage they may be responsible for. Valinotti says to keep in mind most movers limit their responsibility to basic damage amounts. “You may want to check into buying additional insurance to make sure you’re adequately covered during your move.”

• If you’re packing and moving yourself with a rented truck, take a look at your auto insurance policy. Many policies will cover rental trucks, but only up to a certain weight. “Don’t assume your policy covers you when you’re behind the wheel of a 26-foot, 13,000-pound moving truck,” he says. • If you’re handling the move yourself, careful packing is critical. It’s also necessary to keep your property locked up and secured along the way. • Note the condition of your items being relocated. Then if you have a claim, the condition of your possessions will be documented. • Know the value of high-dollar items that will be making the move. “Make a list of everything,” Valinotti suggests. “Take photos and, if necessary, get appraisals of these items before the move.” Valinotti says before a move is a good time to review your overall insurance coverage to make sure you’re adequately covered and whether you need to increase your limits. “A good look at insurance coverage every couple of years is something everyone should do,” he says. “And you don’t have to wait until you’re ready to pack up and relocate.” — Brandpoint Content
