Make your closet work for you F
or many homeowners, their closet is more than a space that stores shirts and shoes; it’s an organized, well-oiled machine that allows them to conveniently store and access everything they need at the beginning and end of the day - or to get decked out for a special occasions. According to Sandra Sokol, president of Closets by Design in Franklin, for most of her clients it’s all about convenience. “They have very busy lives. When you have a custom closet, everything is where it needs to be, and that allows you to dress quickly and get out the door.” Thomas Mills, president of Closets & More in Nashville, echoes that sentiment. “When you are organized you save time, you are more productive and you feel better,” Mills says. DESIGN When it comes to planning and designing a custom closet,
6 | UPSCALE HOMES BUYERS GUIDE | WINTER 2012
company representatives generally start with an in-home consultation where they question a client to determine their goals for the closet space. “We will measure the closet and also inventory the closet at this time,” says Mills. “We will interview the client to find out how they want their closet to function and what they plan to store in it.” Involving clients in the design of their closet, Sokol says, helps ensure the space meets both their needs and their budget. “We start with the bones of the closet; we then price all of the upgrades and accessories,” says Sokol. “We price those individually and allow [the client] to be in charge of both the final price and the final design.” The bones, as Sokol refers to the basic shell of the closet, includes the basic building blocks of the space: shelves, panels and rods. [The shell] provides complete function, but when you add all
the bells and whistles, it looks completely different.” Custom closet manufacturers offer a variety of features. Sokol says some of the more popular items with her clients are the belt rack, tie rack and valet rod. Mills’ clients favor shelves for shoes and folded items, double hanging spaces, hampers and plenty of drawers. By discussing a customer’s needs, Sokol says the closet space will be laid out so that it’s most functional to that client’s lifestyle. “We try to place accessories in a location that’s going to work for them in selecting an outfit,” says Sokol. MAKING THE GRADE Just like buying a car, a custom closet comes with a set of standard options, but the buyer can build on the basics to upgrade their purchase with better materials, hardware and aesthetic upgrades. These choices take the basic functional closet to another level. With options for color, woodgrain, molding and more, closet shelves go from boring to breathtaking. In addition to those items, clients have a number of other choices to choose from. They can add an island or sitting bench with drawers, include a jewelry drawer or opt for a security drawer. Add slanted shelves for shoes, a tilt-out clothes hamper, mirror, ironing board, and plenty of doors and drawers, and you have a space that is highly functional for storing all of your clothing and accessories. Drawers, it seems, are a popular feature with Sokol’s clients. “A lot of people are trying to eliminate furniture in the bedroom. Including plenty of drawer space in the closet increases their living space in the bedroom. It makes the bedroom feel much larger,” says Sokol. Both companies we spoke to offer a basic line as well as upgraded lines with more features. With Closets by Design, pricing begins with the basic white units with flat-paneled doors and drawers in the company’s Everyday collection. “We offer three different collections: Everyday, Classic and Regency,” says Sokol. Everyday is basic, Classic adds some upgrades and the Regency collection is the top of the line.” Sokol says clients may opt for raisedpanel door and drawer fronts — or even glass door fronts — plus choose from
woodgrain or wood veneer in a variety of color choices, from maple and oak to chocolate apple, walnut and cherry. The addition of crown molding and base molding creates an elegant and luxurious look. By upgrading from standard hardware to pulls and knobs made of leather or oil-rubbed bronze, the elements of your custom closet become pieces of fine furniture. At Closets & More, clients have similar options: a choice of melamine laminate or real wood veneer available in 22 laminate color choices and eight veneer choices. Other options include raised panels, bead board, glass door and drawer faces, plus a variety of trims, molding and fluting. Custom closet units may be floor-based or wall-hung. Closets & More offers both types, while Closets by Design sells floorbased units that are anchored to the wall. COST AND MORE While prices do vary, a custom closet is an affordable luxury that you can’t afford to be without. “We have a minimum of $500, but we’ve done closets for over $50,000,” says Sokol. Most installations can be completed within a day, and Sokol notes all her workers are employed by Closets by Design; she doesn’t hire subcontractors. According to Mills, a walk-in master suite closet from Closets & More will range anywhere from $1,500 to $20,000 or more. In addition to closets, both companies also handle designs for hobby rooms, the garage, pantry, home office or entertainment room. So, whether it’s the bedroom closet or the kitchen pantry, companies like these can organize your life and help daily activities to run more smoothly. As Mills puts it, these systems offer a space “where there is a place for everything and everything is in its place.”

Put your house in the spotlight W
e all love the sight of bright holiday lights illuminating the darkness of a cold winter night. And as we drive past these displays during the holiday season, it’s easy to forget all the work that goes into stringing and arranging those many watts of glowing cheer. But you don’t have to risk a Clark Griswold fiasco (à la Christmas Vacation) in order to put on a spectacular show from your lawn. Just call the pros. Several local companies offer holiday light design and installation services, including Red Nose Lighting and Nashville Holiday Lights (a division of PM Lighting). Tom and Jennifer Barlow run Red Nose Lighting, with offices in Franklin and Nashville. Holiday lighting is a service that has grown by leaps and bounds from the days of hiring a guy with a pickup truck to climb on your roof. The Barlows talk about their work with great enthusiasm. In fact, to Tom, stringing lights on a house is almost like putting paint on a canvas. “It’s an art form,” Tom says of his work. “You can do an awful lot with a string of lights. You can do things that people might not have thought of.” In business since 2007, the Barlows got into the holiday lighting trade when they realized their own personal need for this emerging service. “For a few years we actually didn’t have time to put up Christmas lights; we thought, ‘Someone needs to offer this as a service,’” says Tom. For Terry Lawrence of Nashville Holiday Lights, offering a Christmas lighting service was a natural extension of his successful landscape lighting business, PM Lighting, which has been doing business for almost 20 years. 10 | UPSCALE HOMES BUYERS GUIDE | WINTER 2012

DESIGN In this line of work, every job is a custom job that requires a discussion with clients to develop a plan. “The first step is to meet with the client at their home or business for a consultation where we can see the property and discuss the client’s goals and objectives,” says Lawrence. Lighting professionals will go over the different options available, take measurements and help homeowners devise a lighting plan that works for them and fits their budget. “Sometimes people need inspiration,” says Tom. “Other times they know exactly what they want. We get a lot of people who just really like the classic look.” OPTIONS From lights, wreaths and garlands to topiaries and animated figures, there are a multitude of options for your holiday lighting display. Other than lighting your roofline and shrubs, there are numerous lawn decorations: giant candy canes, nutcracker characters, snowmen, Santa’s sleigh and reindeer or an entire tree wrapped in lights. “Clients can choose from numerous styles and colors of products for lighting the roofline, add an array of lighted lawn decorations in 3D or animated versions, and even include motion light drops in trees that appear to be beautiful ice drops melting from the limbs,” says Lawrence. He notes, of course, that “traditional greenery such as wreaths and garland and miniature lights on shrubbery and trees” are still the top choice of many clients. But some clients prefer a bolder look. “We had a customer last week who wanted all blue lights,” says Tom.
What about over-the-top displays with laser shows and music? “People ask, but they never follow through on it. We could certainly do that,” says Tom. “We work with several other companies who offer those services.”

ith Thanksgiving just days away, now is the perfect time to start planning that big holiday event. But with a busy household to run, work to do and other seasonal events to attend, who has time to plan and execute their own spectacular event? The good news: you don’t have to. With the able services of caterers and party planners, you can pull off a holiday cocktail event, Christmas brunch or decked-out dinner party — and still have time to enjoy the festivities and engage with your guests. The recipe for the perfect party has several basic ingredients, but the most important is planning. An experienced caterer or party planner can help you conceive a vision for your event. “Other than the obvious queries like the number of guests, time, style of food and service, etc., I ask my clients to give me their overall vision and objective for their event,” says Jim Hagy, owner of the Chef’s Market in Goodlettsville. “Perhaps it’s an employee appreciation holiday party, an open house to welcome new neighbors, or a Yuletide cocktail celebration for a newly engaged couple. As a caterer, knowing the client’s end objective helps us stay on track with our planning.” Angela Proffitt, who runs Events by AP,
a full-service event planning business in Nashville, helps clients set a theme and consider what their priorities are. “How do you want your guests to feel when they leave,” asks Proffitt. “What are the top three adjectives you want your guests to think of when they leave your party?” There are many options for a holiday gathering, from a Christmas breakfast or holiday brunch to a formal seated dinner or cocktail party. “Afternoon cocktail parties are typically just a couple of hours, so they are a great way to entertain,” says Hagy. “They are a great COURTESY OF JOE BUISSINK last-minute option, because guests may have other holiday commitments on the same day but can begin a great holiday evening with you.” “A seated dinner will be the most expensive of these,” says Hagy. And that’s not necessarily for the cost of the food; a seated dinner requires additional service and culinary staff, plus the cost of renting dishes and tables. While food is important, it isn’t the most important ingredient in your party. We asked several professionals for suggestions on creating a memorable experience for party guests; they offered the following ideas.
12 | UPSCALE HOMES BUYERS GUIDE | WINTER 2012
Child care: Proffitt suggests a babysitter to look after kids and entertain them with activities like a Wii or PlayStation. “They can have their own little menu and specialty drinks,” she says. “If you don’t want kids to attend, communicate to the guests that this is an adult party.” Valet parking: Murphy Thomas of Valet 1 in Nashville says offering valet service will “add that extra flair” to your event. Coat check: Proffitt generally uses members of her staff to oversee the collection of coats and purses. Shoe valet: Proffitt admits it “might sound crazy,” but she notes that ladies who spend an evening dancing in their expensive high heels are prone to want to kick them off. A shoe valet ensures that a guest knows exactly where to find her shoes when she’s ready to re-heel. Music & entertainment: Whether you choose live music, a DJ to “spin” tunes or just pipe in a playlist via your home sound system, music adds another layer of extravagance to your event. For a truly upscale affair, Proffitt recommends live music over the iPod. Activities: Hagy cites an intimate dinner party hosted by a local celebrity couple. “There were retro games, like Pin the Tail on the Donkey and musical chairs, and over-the-top prizes,” he says. For a holiday event, Proffitt suggests a tree-trimming event (good for those who’ve just moved into a new home) or photos with Santa. Over-the-top: Proffitt recalls a party where the hosts installed an ice skating rink in the backyard. Other options for a winter dinner party include a snow machine or the use of a projector to give the appearance of snow falling.
Other luxury options: Send a paper invitation instead of an e-vite, says Proffitt, and opt for china and silver over disposable tableware and cutlery. “An open bar versus a limited bar is a bit more upscale,” says Proffitt, who also recommends greeting guests with a specialty drink. Whether you host a sit-down dinner or a buffet-style event, Hagy says a bigger party doesn’t necessarily mean a better one. “Some of the most rocking parties are intimate holiday impromptu soirées,” says Hagy. In fact, Hagy adds, some of his customers don’t want the formality of a staffed event; they simply order from his take-away menu. “The key is to make it easy. Do as much as possible the day before or sooner. Ideally, arrange to pick up your favorite fare from your caterer the day of,” says Hagy. RESOURCES Hagy says the biggest mistake people make when Chef’s Market Café & Takeaway hosting an event is taking 615-851-2433 on too much of the work www.chefsmarket.com themselves. “Your guests will sense Events by AP when you’re stressed, 615-480-7980 because orchestrating the www.angelaproffitt.com details of even a small affair can be overwhelming,” says Valet 1 Hagy. 615-742-9002 The most important thing, www.valet1.com he says, is to have fun.

make sure the display is going to be truly exceptional.” So what if there’s a problem? Say the lights don’t work, stop flashing or bulbs burn out? Both companies we spoke to said they will promptly handle any issues with your display. “Fortunately, by using LED lighting, the life of our products is very long. Typical issues are usually simple fixes such as resetting the ground-fault,” Lawrence says. COST It’s difficult to draw price comparisons or give estimates for this type of service. With so many variables (the type of lights used, the pitch of the roof, a one-story versus a two-story house), no two jobs are alike. But companies will work with clients to produce a display that suits their price range. “[The client] can add or remove items to meet their budget,” says Tom, whose minimum for a lighting job is $750. Some of his residential customers spend as much as $10,000. One local celebrity paid approximately $17,000 for a holiday light display. Lawrence says the minimum cost with his company is $500, but some clients pay $5,000 or more. It is worth noting that some companies offering this service sell the lights while others rent them. There are pros and cons to each method, so it’s up to the consumer to weigh the differences and decide which option is best for them. Red Nose Lighting rents their lights; Nashville Holiday Lights sells them. Whether you choose to buy or rent your lights, your installer will likely store your lights until the following season. “We do store the client’s lights for them after they purchase the

products, and if the client moves, we return the lights to them if we are no longer going to provide their holiday lighting service,” says Lawrence. According to Barlow, his company will store your lighting items in containers marked with your name. “You’re certainly under no obligation to use them again. We can save them and put them into general inventory,” says Barlow. NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT Neither Lawrence nor the Barlows have a cut-off date for accepting a request for a holiday light display, though earlier is generally better. “My suggestion would be to call sooner rather than later,” says Jennifer. “Don’t be shy about calling early. Our season starts around September or October.” If you wait, Lawrence adds, suppliers may run out of stock on some items and your options may be limited. “Most clients want to have their Christmas lights LEARN MORE installed and ready to turn Nashville Holiday Lights on right after ThanksgivAshland City, Tenn. ing, so holiday lighting 615-792-0033 planning is started as early NashvilleHolidayLights.com as August or September,” says Lawrence. Red Nose Lighting If you haven’t yet started (with offices in Franklin & the process, Lawrence Nashville) says there is still time to 615-264-4556 get a stunning display for rednoselites.com this holiday season.
