European 14 & Under Championships in Pilzen Corentin Moutet and Evgeniya Levashova continued their excellent form of 2013 by winning the European 14 & Under Championships titles in Pilzen. French #1 Moutet arrived in the Czech Republic in confident mood, fresh from victory at the BNP Paribas Cup in Paris and continued to sweep aside all opponents. The fourth seed reached the final without losing a set, notably ending a three match losing streak to European #1 Artem Dubrivnyy (RUS) in the semi-finals. His final opponent was Les Petits As champion Samuele Ramazzotti of Italy, who had scored an impressive 6-0 6-0 victory over Serbian second seed Miomir Kecmanovic in his semi-final. The championship match itself was over quickly; Moutet wasted no time in extending his Tennis Europe Junior Tour win streak to 13 matches, dropping just three games to join the likes of Yannick Noah, Sebastien Grosjean and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on the list of French European Junior Champions. The win is Moutet’s fourth tournament victory of the season, with the other three all being Category 1 events (Bolton, Ste. Genevieve des Bois, Paris) and saw him complete his ascenscion to become the new European #1 when the post-tournament rankings were released. A day earlier, the two singles finalists had also faced off in the doubles final, where the result was reversed. Ramazzotti teamed up with Andrea Trapani to survive a perilously close match, beating Moutet and partner Matteo Martineau 3-6 7-5 [10-7] to claim the gold medal for Italy. The girls’ singles final was a battle between the two top seeds but also turned out to be a one-sided contest. European #1 Evgeniya Levashova was in unforgiving mood against home hope Marketa Vondrousova, conceding just two games in each set to secure her first European Championship title. Levashova was in dominant form throughout the week, winning all six of her matches without coming close to losing a set. The Russian has now won five singles titles this season, including Category 1 events in Paris and Stockholm, and also went unbeaten in team event play at the Winter and Summer Cups. Despite the loss, Vondrousova left Pilzen with two medals, having won the doubles title on the penultimate day alongside Magdalena Pantuckova (interes2

The doubles final was an all-Czech affair and marked the first time in the 37-year history of the European Junior Championships that two teams from the same nation had contested the final. The greater experience of Vondrousova & Pantuckova showed in the final as they beat Lucie Kankova & Monika Kilnarova for the loss of just four games. All four singles finalists from the European Junior Championships have automatically qualified to compete at the Tennis Europe Junior Masters in Reggio Calabria (ITA) in October. European 16 & Under Championships in Moscow Russian players swept the singles titles at the European 16 & Under Championships in Moscow as Darya Kasatkina and Andrey Rublev each claimed the biggest titles of their junior careers so far. Darya Kasatkina became the first Russian girl to take the title since Ksenia Pervak in 2005, scoring a straightforward 6-3 6-3 win over Switzerland’s Jil Belen Teichmann in the final. Seeded second, Kasatkina had been made to work hard during the week, recovering from a set down to beat Spain’s Paula Badosa in the fourth round, and repeating the trick before surviving a final set tie break against Kristina Schmiedlova (SVK) in the quarterfinals. Tenth seed Teichmann also endured some tough battles, outlasting Slovakia’s Katerina Stresnakova (conqueror of top seed Iryna Shymanovich) 6-3 67(3) 6-3 in the quarters before sealing a final berth with a 7-5 2-6 6-3 win over Nina Potocnik (SLO). The final marked the second occasion this season that the pair had met in a major championship final, with Kasatkina having beaten Teichmann in the final of the Tennis Europe Winter Cups by HEAD in February (Switzerland went on to win the tie 2-1). Both players will automatically qualify for the Tennis Europe Junior Masters in Reggio Calabria in October, where they will have the chance to renew their rivalry. There was some consolation for Teichmann later on, as she returned to the court with Chiara Grimm to win the doubles title. The second seeds beat Hungary’s Anna Bondar & Fanny Stollar 6-1 6-4 to claim a second European Championship medal for each player (Grimm also won the 14 & Under doubles gold alongside Belinda Bencic in 2011). Bondar also claimed a bronze medal for reaching the semi-final of the singles competition. A home sweep of singles titles was assured after Kasatkina’s win, as the boys’ final would be between compatriots Andrey Rublev and Roman Safiullin, seeded second and third respectively. The pair had met on just one previous occasion on the Tennis Europe Junior Tour, with Safiullin handing a three-set loss to his Winter Cups team-mate in the Category 1 Maia final two years ago. The roles were reversed on this occasion though as Rublev weathered a second set fight back to emerge 3

as champion after a lengthy 6-3 4-6 6-3 battle that sees him become the first Russian boy to win the 16 & Under event since Andrei Cherkasov in 1986. The dual wins for Kasatkina and Rublev mark the first time that Russia has ever won both singles at the same European Championship event. Bronze medals went to the last two champions of the boys’ 14 & Under event, Mikael Yemer (SWE) and Bogdan Borza (ROU). The boys’ doubles went to Spain’s second seeds Jaume Munar Clar & Pedro Martinez Portero, who outlasted unseeded Danes Benjamin Hannestad & Christian Sigsgaard 7-5 3-6 [10-6]. Both players also reached the quarterfinals of the singles event. Full results, plus a photo gallery from Moscow can be found here.

European 18 & Under Championships in Klosters Karen Khachanov has become the first Russian boy to win the European 18 & Under Championships title since Andrei Cherkasov in 1987. Seeded sixth, Khachanov breezed through the early rounds before coming back from the brink of defeat during a memorable quarterfinal with second-seeded French player Johan Sebastein Tatlot, eventually winning 3-6 75 6-3. In the semi-finals he ended the run of unseeded Spanish giant-killer Adam Sanjurjo Hermida in straights sets to set up a championship decider with France’s other hope, Quentin Halys, who had beaten Kamil Majchrzak (POL) 6-4 6-3 in his semi. 16-year old Halys was appearing in his first ITF Junior Circuit final of 2013 but showed no sign of nerves early on as he took the first set 6-3. Khachanov held his nerve though, and just as in their first meeting earlier this season, fought back strongly to claim the remaining sets 6-3 6-4 and a second medal of the Championships. Khachanov also reached the boys’ doubles final alongside compatriot Daniil Medvedev. The pair stretched top seeds Filippo Baldi and Lucas Miedler to a champion’s tie break, eventually won by the Italian/Austrian pair 6-3 4-6 [10-5]. The win marked a second consecutive European Junior Championship title for Miedler, who claimed the 16 & Under singles title last year. For Baldi it was the third medal of his European Junior Championships career, having claimed silver medals in singles and doubles at the 14 & Under event in 2010. Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic dominated the girls’ events, ending the hopes of home player Karin Kennel with a straight sets defeat in the final of the singles. Local fans had been hoping to see a home player triumph for the first time since Martina Hingis’ win in 1994, but Krejcikova single-handedly ended any such dreams. In the semi-finals, she interrupted the 35-match ITF Junior Circuit unbeaten streak of world #1 Belinda Bencic with a 6-1 7-6(4) victory over the recent junior Roland Garros and Wimbledon champion. Seeded seventh, Kennel had staged an impressive comeback in her semi-final, recovering the loss of a 7-5 first set to concede just one more game against Elise Mertens (BEL), conqueror of second seed Ana 4

Konjuh (CRO). There was to be no such revival in the final though; the Czech player was always in control, easing to a 6-2 6-4 win in just over an hour of play to claim her third ITF Juniors title of the season. It was a perfect week for the 17-year old, who had earlier claimed the girls’ doubles title with Katerina Siniakova to become the fourth Czech pair to win the 18 & Under girls’ doubles since 2006. The top seeds beat Romania’s Ioana Ducu & Ioana Loredana Rosca 6-4 6-1 and Siniakova earned the rare distinction of having won European Junior Championship titles in successive years, having claimed the 16 & Under doubles crown last year in Moscow. Meanwhile, Krejcikova becomes just third third girl in the history of the 18 & Under Championships to win both singles and doubles in the same year, following in the footsteps of Hana Strachonova of Czechoslovakia (1979) and Jana Cepelova of Slovakia (2010). Italy & Russia win Tennis Europe Nations Challenge by HEAD titles Italy and Russia have been crowned as the new champions of the Tennis Europe Nations Challenge by HEAD 12 & Under team competition following a fortnight of action across Europe. Italy beat Belarus 2-1 at the boys’ final rounds in Antalya (TUR) to claim the title for a second time, and first since their home win in 2008. Filippo Moroni gave his team the best possible start, edging a long first set before accelerating away from Kirill Yarmoshuk to score a 7-5 6-0 win. Above: boys’ finalists in Antalya

Marco Furlanetto had won all five of his previous matches at the final rounds, but had a tough task against Alexander Zgirovsky. The two players have been amongst the most prolific on the 12 & Under Tour this season, each having won three singles titles so far. In a reversal of the first match, it was the Belarusian player that eventually won the first set before asserting his authority in the second, levelling the tie with a 7-6(3) 62 win.

Slovakia and Ukraine with a 2-0 final win over Poland. Ekaterina Makarova gave the team its first point, conceding just two games to Nikola Okopniak in exactly one hour of play. The second match, between Anastasia Potapova and Iga Swiatek, lasted just nine minutes longer, with Potapova achieving the rare distinction of playing on the winning 12 & Under team for a second successive year with a 6-4 6-0 v.

The four players returned to court after a break for the deciding doubles match, which turned out to be less competitive than the previous singles battles. Regular partners Furlanetto & Moroni were in control throughout the encounter, easing to a 6-3 6-2 win in just over an hour; the third time in four matches at the final rounds that the Italian pair had clinched a decisive doubles victory.

Both Makarova & Potapova also represented Russia during their run to the Winter Cups title in February. The national girls’ team has been especially dominant in the last two seasons, having won both the indoor and outdoor team competitions in both 2012 and 2013.

Belarus was competing in the final of the competition for the first time, and also finished as bronze medallists at the boys’ 12 & Under Tennis Europe Winter Cups by HEAD in February.

The new win is Russia’s fourth victory in seven editions of the competition and is another high point in a remarkable season for Makarova and Potapova, who between them have claimed eleven singles and eight doubles so far.

Russia stormed to the girls’ title at their final rounds in Ajaccio (FRA), following up 3-0 dismissals of Germany,

Russia sweeps European 16 & Under team events Russia has become the first nation in 21 years to win both boys’ and girls’ 16 & Under Summer Cups titles in the same year. The girls’ team was the first to clinch gold by winning the Helvetie Cup title for the fourth time in five years with a decisive victory over Hungary at the final rounds in Leysin, Switzerland. The final was decided after less than two hours of play, with both singles players scoring quick wins. Veronika Kudermetova gave the Russians an early lead, handing Fanny Stollar her first singles defeat in team competitions this season by scoring a 6-3 6-2 win in just 55 minutes. Europe’s new 16 & Under Champion Darya Kasatkina then took on Anna Bondar for the chance to seal the tie. The match was a re-run of their semi-final at the European Championships in Moscow just 10 days ago, and the result would be the same as the Russian conceded just four games. The dead doubles match was more competitive. Both teams drafted in the fresh legs of their third players. Aleksandra Pospelova accompanied Kudermetova while Rebeka Stolmar teamed up with Anna Bondar for the marathon match, which the Russians eventually claimed 7-6(4) 6-7(8) 6-4 after two and a half hours of play to complete a 3-0 sweep. Russia was never in danger at the final rounds, having earlier scored 3-0 victories over Great Britain and France. The team lost just one rubber in the entire competition, as European #4 Iryna Shymanovich of Belarus stunned Kasatkina with a 0-6 7-5 6-3 win in the last round of qualifying.

Above: The Russian team celebrates in Leysin

The result equals Hungary’s best-ever performance in the competition, with a runner-up spot to Slovakia in 2000 being their only previous final in any of the girls’ Summer Cups events. Russia will next year attempt to become the third country in the history of the competition to record three successive wins, following Sweden (19791981) and Slovakia (1998-2000). Russia then went on to complete a sweep of Europe’s 16 & Under Summer Cups titles by beating Germany to claim the Borotra Cup boys’ competition in Le Touquet (FRA). Seeded #1, and having reached the final without the loss of a match, the Russians started in confident style by fielding their #3 player Evgeny Tyurnev for the first time at the final rounds, as he faced Fabian Fallert. Tyurnev wasted no time in making an impression, breaking at will to race to a 6-4 6-2 victory.

Russia wins second Borotra Cup title The second match was a battle between two of the top three-ranked European players as Russia’s newly-crowned European Junior Champion Andrey Rublev took on Alexander Zverev, a former 14 & Under Tennis Europe Junior Masters winner. Rublev had not conceded a set throughout the entire competition but was make to work hard by his top-ranked opponent, who recovered from the loss of the first set 6-4 to level up by winning six of the next seven games. The fiery Rublev maintained his posture though, extending his Tennis Europe Junior Tour win streak to 14 matches and sealing the victory for his country with a 6-4 final set. Rublev later returned to the court alongside the player he beat in the recent European Championships final, Roman Safiullin, to complete their fifth consecutive 3-0 win of the tournament. Tim Sandkaulen partnered Fallert for Germany, but despite a close match they were not able to secure a consolation point, going down 7-5 7-6(4). Russia and Germany also contested the finals of the Tennis Europe Winter Cups by HEAD in February, which also ended in a 3-0 win for the Russians. This new win marks just the second occasion that Russia has won the outdoor competition, with their only previous victory coming in 2008. Russian teams have been particularly successful in 2013, winning three of the six Winter Cups categories and three of the five Summer Cups titles to have been decided so far. The last nation to win both the Helvetie and Borotra Cups in the same season was France in 1992. A total of 58 European nations took part in this year’s qualifying competition which was played at seven Euriopean venues; Rakovnik (CZE), Hatfield (GBR), Curtea de Arges (ROU), Trani (ITA), St. Petersburg (RUS), Vinarós (ESP) and Ankara (TUR). The 16 & Under European Summer Cups also serve as the regional qualifying event for the 2013 Junior Davis & Fed Cup by BNP Paribas. The top six nations will each advance to the final rounds of the worldwide competition, which are due to be held in San Luis Potosi in Mexico from 24-29 September. Italy wins first Galea/Valerio Cup title in 27 years Italy has claimed the 18 & Under boys’ Valerio/Galea Cup team title for the first time in 27 years, following a victory over the top seeds and defending champions France in La Rochelle. Matteo Donati put the visitors ahead by overcoming a rankings gap of 71 places to upset French #2 Enzo Couacaud in the opening match. Donati looked to have the match in hand after breezing through the first set 6-1, but Couacuad levelled by taking the second set 3-6. The Italian held his nerve though to clinch a 12-game deciding set, handing the advantage to his team-mate Filippo Baldi. Ranked #8 in the world, Baldi had been one of the star players of the tournament and had not lost a match en route to the final. His opponent, Maxime Hamou, had a similar record and is ranked just five places lower than the Italian. Everything hinged on the first set, which Baldi squeezed through after a tie break before going on to secure a break in the second set and seal a 7-6(4) 6-4 win that would put the tie out of reach of the tournament hosts. With the match already decided, the dead doubles match was not played. Having also served on the winning Italian 16 & Under team last year and the victorious 12 & Under Nations Challenge by HEAD team in 2008, Baldi will end his junior career alongside a handful of players to have won European team events across three different age categories. He also won silver medals in both singles and doubles at the European 14 & Under Championships in 2010. Italy’s last victory at the event marked the end of a

The Swedes were struck with misfortune as Jonathan Mridha was forced to retire after losing the first set of his match with Johannes Haerteis. Hannes Wagner then outlasted Elias Ymer in three sets to clinch the medals. A total of 27 national teams entered the event, which saw qualifying rounds held in Opava (CZE), Venice (ITA), St Petersburg (RUS) and Piestany (SVK). Full draws and results can be found here. European Seniors Open 35+ German players dominated the recent European Seniors Open 35+, which was held in Baiersbronn from 31st July – 4 August. The men’s final saw world #1 and defending champion Daniel Dolbea take on second seed Christian Schaeffkes, the German Over 40s champion. Schaeffkes took control from the end of the first set, winning 7-5 6-2 to complete his fourth tournament win of the year – all of which have been achieved without the loss of a set. Schaeffkes also claimed the notable scalp of former third seed Andrey Cherkasov in the semifinals. The Russian former ATP Top 20 player had accepted a wild card invitation to compete at a European Open event for the first time in what was his first appearance on the ITF Seniors Circuit since 2007. The women’s draw was also dominated by Germans, with third seeded wild card Angelika Roesch improv10 Issue 113 > August 2013

In the Spotlight: Jaume Munar Clar After winning the 16 & Under Tennis Europe Junior Masters last October, Jaume Munar Clar of Spain ended the season ranked as the European #1. This year his appearances on the Tennis Europe Junior Tour have been limited to representing his country at team events, and to competing at the European Junior Championships, where he recently won the doubles gold medal alongside Pedro Martinez Portero. We caught up with him to find out how his junior career is progressing. Congratulations on becoming a European Champion. How would you evaluate your week in Moscow? It was a good experience for me, both in singles and doubles. Any chance you get to play against the very best players is good. I think that the whole week was very positive; I learned some things and having won the doubles and done well in singles, I am happy with the results. Is doubles important to you? Of course! Some people might think that doubles is not as important as singles, but I don’t look at it that way. Singles is more popular and always has a bigger audience but doubles has its appeal too; if you can achieve notable results in doubles it’s just as impressive to me. Do you see yourself continuing to play doubles when you become a professional?

important thing is to play high-level events, and I think that that has been the case in all of the tournaments that I have played.

Well, it’s difficult to say because as a professional you have to consider your calendar. Sometimes it’s not possible to combine singles and doubles at every event, especially if you go deep into the tournament. But apart from that, if it was just down to my own personal choice, it would be perfect to always play doubles because I love both events.

At last year’s Tennis Europe Junior Masters, you were one of three Spaniards to win titles, along with Eduard Güell and Sara Sorribes. Having won a gold medal in Moscow with Pedro Martinez and competing in the Borotra Cup alongside him and Alvaro Lopez, do you feel like you are part of a particularly strong generation of Spanish teenagers?

This year you have played a wide variety of events; 16 & Under, 18 & Under, team events, even your first ITF Pro Circuit tournaments. Have you noticed a big difference in quality when switching between these levels?

I think it’s a bit early to talk about generations when we are only 16 years old and we are all still a long way from being successful professional players. But in terms of juniors I do agree that Spain is very strong at the moment, there is a very high level and there are many players that are performing very well. All I can tell you is that it’s an honour to play alongside them, and I hope that we can all continue to progress and end up being professional players together.

Well, the only 16 & Under events that I have played have been the European Championships, both individual and team. Those events already have an incredible standard, with all the best players taking part. Many of them are also already playing Under 18s, so I haven’t really noticed a big difference there. All of the different circuits have different things to teach you, and you have to learn from these experiences and move on to the next challenge. The most

In the Spotlight: Jaume Munar Clar he’s one of the greatest players in the history of the sport and I felt very, very lucky to have such a chance. The whole time I tried to give 100% and play my very best…it was incredible. Did he have any advice or words of wisdom for you? Nothing special really, but of course I paid a lot of attention to everything he said! Of everything that you have achieved so far in the sport, what has been the most special moment for you?

Munar Clar (left) and partner Pedro Martinez Portero celebrate their doubles success in Moscow.

I’m not sure that it’s anything more than a happy coincidence to be honest. Of course there are several very good tennis schools, but you can find thousands of those all over Spain. When Nadal was preparing his comeback earlier this year, you were invited to train with him in Mallorca. What was that like? I was on my way to Barcelona when they told me that I had the opportunity to train for a week with Rafa, it was incredible! It was an unforgettable experience;

I think that the win that made me happiest was my first 18 & Under tournament in France [Munar won eight consecutive matches to win the Grade 3 Saint Cyprien event as a qualifier] at the end of last year. It was a great way to end my best season so far, and since then I’ve seen a great change in my tennis. What are your objectives for the rest of the season? I don’t have any concrete objectives. The most important thing for me to continue to learn, to give my best efforts on a daily basis and to continue to prepare for the future, because things will only get tougher and I will need to put in even greater efforts to keep progressing.

European Beach Tennis Championships Italian players retained their vicelike grip on the European Beach Tennis Championships, winning all three gold medals for a sixth consecutive year. Over 120 players representing 20 European nations were in action at the three-day event, which was hosted for the first time by the British Lawn Tennis Association at Brighton’s Yellowave Centre. The men’s event went with form, with the world’s top four-ranked players advancing to contest the final. Three of the participants were fighting for the gold medal for a second successive year as defending champion and world #1 Marco Garavini teamed with world #2 Alessandro Calbucci to face 2011 champions Michele Cappelletti & Luca Carli. The final result was a repeat of the most recent match between the Italian foursome, which came in the finals of last week’s World Championships in Moscow. Garavini & Calbucci maintained the upper hand throughout a close contest to force a 6-4 7-5 win that earned them their second major championship title in a fortnight. The win marks a first European title for Calbucci, who finished the event as runner-up in 2009 and 2011, and a third for Garavini, who won in 2008 and 2012 alongside Tazzari. The bronze medal went to Russian team Nikita Burmakin & Igor Panin, who survived a comeback

from Patrice Band & Pascal Herve (FRA) before triumphing in a champion’s tie break, 6-4 5-7 [10-5]. The women’s title also remains in Italian hands, though the event saw a few surprises along the way. World #1 Eva D’Elia and partner Giulia Curzi had high hopes for the title given D’Elia’s status as defending champion, but their progress was derailed in the semifinals by third seeded Germans Dorothee Bereth & Carina Blank. Already assured of Germany’s first ever medal at the European Championships, Bereth & Blank put up a strong fight in the final against second seeds Flamina Daina & Michaela Zanaboni, taking the pair to a tie break in the second set before capitulating 6-2 7-6(0). D’Elia & Curzi earned the consolation of a bronze medal, scoring a 6-4 7-5 win over San Marino’s Alice Grandi & Camila Zafferani. The final match of the day was an all-Italian mixed doubles final, with Flamina Daina & Marco Garavini adding to their doubles titles by beating top seeds Eva D’Elia & Luca Carli to claim their second gold medals of the championships. Alice Grandi & Willian Forcellini beat Russia’s Gulnara Fattakhetdinova & Nikita Burmakin 6-3 6-4 to claim the bronze medal for San Marino, a second career bronze for Forcellini. The Championships will remain in Great Britain for a second year in 2014. Full draws and results can be found here.

Behind the Baseline... Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli has shocked the tennis world by announcing her sudden retirement from the sport, citing recurring pain and injury concerns. The WTA Tour has launched a global sponsorship deal with enterprise application software company SAP under which the organisations will collaborate to develop tools to “analyse performance and optimise strategy and better service the media”. As part of the deal, SAP has signed up as an official sponsor of the season-ending WTA Championships, to be held in Istanbul from October 21-27. This year’s US Open champions will receive a record $2.6 million in prize money. The sum represents a 37% increase on the amounts awarded to last year’s winners. The runner-up prize will increase from $950,000 to $1.3 million, while the prize money awarded to first round losers increases from $23,000 to $32,000. The USTA previously announced that the total prize money will increase to $50 million by 2017. New York City councillors have approved a $10 million renovation plan for Flushing Meadows. Serena Williams has been confirmed as the first player to qualify for the WTA Championships in Istanbul. Maria Sharapova has ended her coaching relationship with Tomas Hogsted in order to work with former world #1 Jimmy Connors. The Russian also recently topped Forbes’ list of the highest-paid female athletes for a ninth consecutive year, ahead of Serena Williams, Li Na and Victoria Azarenka. Tennis players account for seven of the top nine places in the list. Former British #1 Anne Keothavong has announced her retirement from professional tennis and will now work as a tennis commentator for new British satellite channel BT Sport. Milos Raonic this week became the first Canadian ever to reach the singles Top Ten. The same rankings update also marked the first time that no American players appeared in the men’s Top 20. Monica Seles will be inducted into the US Open

Court of Champions at a ceremony before the women’s final on September 8th. European players won a string of medals at the Deaflympics tennis event, which was held in Sofia recently. Gobor Mathe (HUN) won the men’s singles gold; Heike Albrecht (GER) won the women’s and also teamed up with compatriot Urs Breitenberger to win the mixed doubles. Breitenberger in turn partnered Hans Toedter to win the men’s doubles, while American pair Emily Hangstefer & Laura Chapman claimed the women’s doubles gold. Novak Djokovic is attempting to become the first player ever to win all nine ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titles this week in Cincinatti. Martina Hingis will re-enter the WTA Tour doubles rankings Top 200 next week after winning at least one match in all three tournaments played so far in her comeback. The British Royal Mail has commemorated Andy Murray’s historic Wimbledon win with the issue of a special set of souvenir postage stamps. The Brisbane International and China Open have been honoured with the ATP International Group Best Fan Experience Award, as voted by ATP World Tour members. Brisbane’s ATP World Tour 250 tournament, which attracted more than 90,000 fans for a second straight year, also won the award in 2012, while the ATP 500-series China Open welcomed 116,000 spectators to its venue, which employs space-age air-cooling technology to benefit players and spectators, and features four show courts. British #1 Laura Robson has confirmed that she intends to work with Miles Maclagan until at least the end of the season. Next month’s Davis Cup by BNP Paribas tie in Antwerp between Israel and Belgium will be played on Thursday, Friday and Sunday (12-15) in order to allow the Israeli team to observe Yom Kippur on the Saturday. Both semifinals will see European teams take on visitors during the same weekend. Serbia will host Canada in Belgrade while the Czech Republic will face Argentina in Prague.

FAST FACT 2013 Men’s singles champion Andy Murray spent 18 hours on the Wimbledon show courts this year - 2 hours 10 minutes less than in 2012 when he was runner-up. Source: SPORTS MARKETING SURVEYS INC. Wimbledon Census 2013.

Tennis Europe Junior Tour Rankings - 14 & Under The new European Junior Champions have also settled into the top spots on the Tennis Europe Junior Tour rankings as they continue their impressive seasons. Ebgeniya Levashova leads an incredible seven Russian girls to feature in the Top Ten. One of those is new entry Tatiana Makarova, who recently claimed her fourth singles title of the year so far at the Category 2 event in Ulm, Germany.

Ulm semifinalist Karl Friberg of Sweden is the newest addition to the boys’ Top Ten, having won back-to-back tournaments in Maribor (Category 2) and Copenhagen (Category 3, as a qualifier) earlier in the summer. The only other player to climb on the boys’ list is new #1 Corentin Moutet, who has won 37 of 41 matches so far this year, racking up three Category 1 titles in addition to his European Championships win.
