Italy completes sweep of 18 & Under European team events Italy has won the Reina/Soisbault Cup for a second time in four years following an exciting weekend of action at the final rounds of the European Summer Cups event for girls aged 18 & Under at CT Lleida in Spain. Italy showed fighting spirit on their way to the final, being forced to recover from the loss of the first singles rubber against Slovakia in the opening match, and also against Sweden in the semi-finals. On both occasions Alice Matteucci – at #30, the second highest-ranked player in action at the final rounds – levelled the tie before playing a role in the deciding doubles victory. Italy completes sweep of 18 & Under European team events << Their final opponent Romania had had an easier road to the title match. Having caused an upset on the opening day by ousting the favourites for the title, top seeded Croatia, the Romanians blasted past Hungary to score a decisive 3-0 semi-final win. Jasmine Paolini began the final by recording her first singles victory of the weekend, taking control after a close first set to score a 7-5 6-2 win over Irina Maria Bara. Fittingly, Matteucci was then able to secure the title for her team. She followed up her heroics of the previous days by taking just over an hour to post an emphatic 6-2 6-0 win over Ioana Loredana Rosca before leaping into the arms of coach Tathiana Garbin in celebration. The Romanians had been hoping for a first ever title in this age category of the European summer team competitions, while Italy’s victory is their seventh overall, and marks a second team victory under the guidance of Garbin, who also led the 16 & Under squad to the title in Leysin in 2011. Italy’s victory concludes the European junior outdoor team events for another year, and sees them complete a sweep of the 18 & Under events, having also sealed the boys’ title in La Rochelle against hosts France last month. Having also won the boys’ 12 & Under Tennis Europe Nations Challenge by HEAD, Italy won three of the eight available team titles, second to Russia, who were victors of the Girls 12 & Under, Boys 14 & Under and both 16 & Under events. Full draws and results from the final rounds in Lleida, as well as all the other Summer Cups events, can be found here.

Success for ITF/Tennis Europe 14&U Touring Team This year’s ITF/Tennis Europe Grand Slam team for boys and girls aged 14 & under completed a successful summer tour of Germany and Belgium during the months of July and August. The team consisted of nine players; four boys and five girls. The boys included Kaya Gore (TUR), Eleftherios Neos (CYP), Andrej Jokic (BIH) and Zura Tkemaladze (GEO), while the girls were Eliza Omirou (CYP), Oleksandra Andrieieva (UKR), Inci Ogut (TUR), Zinovia Vaneva (BUL) and Nika Shytkouskaya (BLR). The players were accompanied by two coaches, Goran Shevchenko (MKD) and Ana Movsisyan (ARM). The players and the coaches met for the first time in Duren, Germany on July 27th, where they had a short time to train and get to know each other before continuing to the first tournament on their schedule, which was held in the same location. The results of the first tournament indicated some promise for the coming weeks. Oleksandra Andrieieva started the tour in style by reaching the girls’ singles final, where she faced Canadian player Katherine Sebov and lost 6-0 6-7(4) 6-1. There was some consolation in the doubles though; together with her teammate Eliza Omirou, Andrieieva won the title against Sebov and her fellow Canadian Vanessa Wong 4-6 6-2 [10-1]. Zinovia Vaneva also played well to reach the singles quarter finals while Kaya Gore & Eletherios Neos and Inci Ogut & Vaneva reached the semi-finals of the boys’ and girls’ doubles respectively. The tour then continued to Hasselt, Belgium where the Team built on their early success. Inci Ogut showed her potential by reaching the singles semifinals, where she lost to Johana Markova (CZE) 1-6 26. Andrej Jokic and Eleftherios Neos reached their first quarter finals in the singles event, losing respectively to Andres Donayre (PER), a member of the ITFCOSAT team 2-6 4-6 and Lucas Vuradin (AUS) 67(5) 4-6. The ITF/Tennis Europe Team members once again showed that can play excellent doubles; the ITF/Europe/COSAT pairing of Neos/Donayre won the boys’ title against Parikshit Somani (IND) & Wu Yi Bing (CHN), members of ITF/Asia team with a score of 6-4 0-6 [10-5]. The girls’ doubles final was another duel between ITF Teams, with Inci Ogut & Nika Shytkouskaya emerging triumphant over Thaisa Pedretti (BRA) & Stagni Lailla (PAR) 7-6(2), 6-4. On the third week, the team returned to Germany were they participated at the München Junior Open. Kaya Gore showed why he is currently one of the best 14 & Under players in Europe by wining the singles title against Jakub Patyk (CZE) with a crushing 6-1 6-0 defeat. Together with Neos he also reached the final of the doubles, where the pair lost to home 4

favourites Rudolph Molleker & Nicola Kuhn 6-4 6-2. Neos, Omirou and Andrieieva all reached the singles quarterfinals, while Omirou & Andrieieva went all the way in the doubles event, beating teammates Ogut/Shytkouskaya 6-2 6-1 in the semifinals before going on to win their second doubles title on this tour against Francesca Jones (GBR) & Tatiana Makarova (RUS) 6-2 6-2. The tour finished at the prestigious Jugend Cup in Rutesheim/Renningen where the ITF/Tennis Europe players once again recorded impressive results. The girls’ team excelled by having four players in the singles quarterfinals, two of whom ended up contesting the final. Omirou ended teammate Vaneva’s run 6-3 6-3 in one quarterfinal, while Andrieieva outlasted Ogut in a punishing 3-hour match, winning 4-6 6-2 75. In the final Omirou brought her best form, beating Andrieieva 6-3 6-3 to claim the biggest title of her junior career so far. Kaya Gore also had a good week by reaching the semifinals, where he lost to Tarbes champion and European Junior Championships runner-up Samuele Ramazzotti (ITA) 6-1 6-0. The doubles event saw yet more success for the team, with Andrieieva & Omirou and Ogut & Vaneva contesting the girls’ final, where Andrieieva & Omirou won their third title of the tour by a margin of 7-5 6-2. Eleftherios Neos also ended the tour with success by partnering Cypriot compatriot Constantinos Christoforou to reach the final of the 16 & Under doubles event where they lost to the Greek team Christos Antonopoulos & Vasileios Iliopoulos 6-1 6-3. After four very competitive tournaments, the coaches concluded that it had been a very successful summer for the team. The players competed at some of the best European events in this age division and showed great attitude, competitive spirit and work ethic. The players’ desire to improve paid dividends, as they were improved their results and became more competitive as the tour went on, in both singles and doubles events.

Tennis 10s in Iceland The Tennisclub of Kópavogur in Iceland participated recently in two festivals in Iceland with the aim of promoting Tennis 10s. First up was the annual Cultural Weekend in Iceland. Four of the best juniors together with a coach went to downtown Reykjavik and erected 8 mini tennis courts. It was a first time tryout and was a great success, exceeding expectations. According to Jónas Páll Björnsson, who organised the event, “All of the courts were full as soon as we arrived. We were planning to stay from 2-4pm, but people were so happy to try tennis that we prolonged our stay as all of the courrts were busy until 7.” The next weekend team visited a similar but smaller event, Hamraborgarfestival, in their hometown Kópavogur and put up 5 mini tennis courts, where they found that people were as happy to try tennis as
in Reykjavik. “Everyone has been positve towards tennis”, said Björnsson, “Therefore I would say that this is a great way to promote tennis, by bringing tennis to the people!"
Tennis XPress Seminar in Malta The Malta Tennis Federation hosted its latest series of workshops for coaches from 6-7 September. The two workshops were delivered by Mark Tennant from Great Britain on behalf of Tennis Europe. The workshops were attended by 15 local coaches and focused on continuing the development of Tennis 10s programmes on the island, which began with previous visits by experts in the last few years, and also on the launch of the International Tennis Federation’s new Tennis Xpress programme. Tennis Xpress is aimed at introducing tennis to beginner adults through the use of slower balls and smaller courts, and was launched by the ITF earlier in 2013. Claire Arrigo of the Malta Tennis Federation said “I would like to thank Tennis Europe for giving the MTF the opportunity to offer these valuable workshops to our tennis coaches. This improves the level and quality of the coaching which directly impacts the
improvement of our tennis players and in turn increases the participation of tennis on the island.” Tutor Mark Tennant added, “The coaches who attended were extremely positive and receptive in regards to the information that we covered over the 2 days, and I look forward to hearing about the progress which will undoubtedly be made on the island as a result of the workshop”
Tennis Europe Coaches’ Education Conference The Tennis Europe Coaches’ Education Conference is set to take place in Valencia, Spain next week. Around 70 delegates are expected to attend the event, which is intended for those reponsible for coaches education in Tennis Europe’s 49 member national tennis federations. 7
Issue 114 | September 2013
Key topics set to be discussed include competency based education assessment procedures, European standards for club coach competencies, coaches’ education facilitator training, the alignment of federation & university based coaches’ education systems. In the Spotlight: Ana Konjuh We caught up with Ana Konjuh at the European Summer Cups finals in Lleida last weekend. Still aged just 15, the Croatian has had a breakout season, winning two Junior Grand Slam titles, reaching the world #1 spot, going unbeaten in Fed Cup singles action and winning her first professional title. This is what the former European Junior Champion had to say about it all… What’s next on your schedule after the Summer Cups? I’m playing a $25,000 ITF Pro Circuit event in Seville next week, and then I’ll go home for a few days. It’s been a busy few weeks with lots of travelling because after the US Open I went back to Croatia to see the Davis Cup tie. You’ve had a phenomenally successful year. Has there been anything that you feel you could done even better? I don’t think so, I am very happy with my year. Winning two Grand Slams and reaching two other Slam semi-finals were good results, plus I did well at my first professional events, so I am satisfied with that. You won both of the junior Slams that are played on hard courts. Would you say that’s your best surface? Well…in juniors I’ve had great results on hard courts, but so far in professional tennis I had better results on clay, so I suppose I like both the same. I really like grass too; it’s very different to the other surfaces. Wimbledon was definitely my favourite Slam. It must have felt great to see a compatriot win the boys’ event in New York when you won the girls’? I was so happy for Borna [Coric, boys’ champion]; he really wanted that win and worked hard for it. It was a great day for Croatia because it had never happened before that two of our players won the same junior Slam, so we were both very happy that we managed to do it. Hopefully we’ll have some good results in the future too!

Konjuh’ in action for Croatia at the European Summer Cups final rounds in Lleida on September 20th.
Where are you normally based when you’re not on the road? In Croatia I live in Zagreb; I’ve been there for four years now. I train at the National Tennis Centre, and have an apartment there. My parents take turns to come and stay for a week at a time then I travel to tournaments. My family is very supportive. I’m originally from Dubrovnik and I do miss it a bit; all my sisters are there and I don’t get to see them a lot, so it’s great when I get a chance to go on holiday. You’re still only 15. In theory you could continue playing juniors for another two years… But I won’t…it’s time to move on. I really wanted to finish my junior career by winning the title at the US Open; that was my goal when I went to New York, and it’s what I did. I was struggling in the first round and I thought “Oh no! Imagine if I lose in the first round!” but then I managed to get through and played better and better with each round. So it’s all change next year… Yes, I will end the year by playing some $25,000 and $50,000 events and then next season I’ll start with the Australian Open because I have a wild card for the qualies.
Croatian tennis seems to have a bright future…
There will be age restrictions though?
Yes, there’s also Donna Vekic, who’s just a little older than me and she’s already Top 80. She’s really good and we have a very good Fed Cup team so hopefully we can do well there.
Yes, at the moment I can play like ten tournaments per year, then 14 or 16. You have to watch carefully your total number of events so it’s a bit difficult because when you play good you want to carry on playing. >>

In the Spotlight: Ana Konjuh Is doubles a priority for you? Well, I feel like doubles helps to improve certain parts of my game, and it helps me to understand the game better. I’m not playing a lot of doubles, but I think it’s important to do so when you can. What are your short term goals? For the end of this year I would like to break into the Top 200 and then next year my only goal would be to play my best tennis and be happy. Improving is more important than the results; they will come. Which professional tournament are you most looking forward to playing? Wimbledon! I really love how everything is so different and unique there. I really hope that I’ll be able to get into the main draw and to play some top players. You can follow Ana on Twitter and Facebook. Right: Konjuh’s first major international success came winning the European 14 & Under Championships in Pilzen in 2011.

Nadal crowns comeback with second US Open title Rafael Nadal edged closer to returning to the top spot by extending his unbeaten record on hard courts in 2013 to capture the US Open title for a second time. The final was another electrifying battle between the Spaniard and current world #1 Novak Djokovic – their third battle in New York in the last four years – and once again featured tennis of a level that had to be seen to be believed. Nadal had the upper hand early on, playing with the confidence of a player who had won five of his last six matches against his opponent to break twice in the first set. But Djokovic’s confidence grew in the second set, boosted by breaking serve after winning a 54-stroke rally that looks set to feature in highlight reels for years to come. The moral boost was enough to snag the second set for the Serb, but Nadal’s consistency never wavered and by the end of the fourth set, the Roland Garros champion was dominating almost all the rallies. For Rafa, a thirteenth career Grand Slam is the pinnacle of his achievements since returning to the sport seven months ago following a seven-month absence to rest his tortured knees. Rising to #2, his record in 2013 is astonishing; 60 of 64 matches won, 10 titles including 2 Grand Slams and 5 Masters 1000, and a 22 match unbeaten streak on the hard courts that his body so dislikes. He later acknowledged the pressure he was under and credited his opponent for the level of play, saying “It is very, very emotional. All my team knows how much this means to me. Nobody brings my game to its limits like Novak Djokovic.” In the women’s final, world #1 Serena Williams withstood determined resistance from Victoria Azarenka to claim her home Grand Slam for the fifth time in her career and wrap up a second major title of 2013. The defending champion was broken twice when serving for the match in the second set and her Belarusian opponent appeared to have snatched the momentum after edging a tie break to take the match to a final set. Serena appeared nervous having lost their last meeting in Cincinatti in similar circumstances, but the American broke early for a 3-1 lead and never looked back, clinching a memorable 7-5 6-7(6) 6-1 win that saw her earn the biggest pay check in women’s tennis history at $3.6 million, which included a $1million bonus for winning the US Open Series. The American now looks all but certain to finish the year as the world #1 for the third time in her career.

Bob & Mike Bryan fell at the penultimate hurdle in their attempt to become the first team in the Open ear to win a calendar year doubles Grand Slam, beaten by eventual champions Leander Paes (IND) & Radek Stepanek (CZE) in the semifinals. The 2012 runners-up went on to beat the world’s second best team of Alexander Peya (AUT) and Bruno Soares (BRA) for the loss of just four games in the final. The victory was the pair’s second Grand Slam title together, and eighth men’s doubles Slam of 40year-old Paes’ long career. There were Czech hands on the women’s doubles trophy too, as Andrea Hlavackova & Lucie Hradecka went one better than their 2012 runner-up spot to claim a second Slam title. The pair handed a rare loss to Serena & Venus Williams in the semi-finals, and proceeded to break Aussie hearts by ensuring that Ashleigh Barty & Casey Dell’Acqua would end the season as runners-up at three of the four Grand Slams. Not a bad achievement for a team who were playing in just their fifth event together. In the mixed doubles, Hlavackova added to her women’s title by teaming up with Max Mirnyi of Belarus to win their first title together. The pair saved three set points in the opening set before beating home hope Abigail Spears and Santiago Gonzalez of Mexico. The win marks a first mixed doubles Slam for the Czech, while Mirnyi claimed the title for a third time, and is his 10th Slam title overall. The next generation of Croatian tennis looks promising, after Borna Coric and Ana Konjuh doubled up to win both the boys’ and girls’ singles events. Konjuh, the European 14 & Under champion in 2011, continued her rapid progress by adding the US Open title to the Australian Open crown that she claimed in January. In a thrilling match between two 15-year olds, she overcame a stern test from unseeded American Tornado Alicia Black in the final, >>

Nadal crowns comeback with second US Open title << eventually edging the 2012 Les Petits As runner-up by 8 points to 6 in the final set tie break. Borna Coric also had to come from behind to win his first ever Junior Grand Slam title. The 16-year old recovered from the loss of the first set against Australia’s Thanasi Kokkinakis before dominating the latter stages of the match, winning 20 of 22 points at one stage in the final set. The victory avenged a loss in the semi-finals of the Australian Open and was the perfect end to Coric’s junior career. The boys’ doubles went to Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak and his Polish-born American partner Martin Redlicki, who caused a series of sensational upsets on their way to the titles, including wins over #1 seeds Coric & Stefan Kozlov (USA) in the first round and sixth seeds Andrey Rublev (RUS) & Alexander Zverev (GER) in the quarterfinals. In the final match they beat France’s Quentin Halys & Frederico Silva of Portugal in straight sets. Barbora Krejcikova & Katerina Siniakova ensured that the girls’ doubles trophy would be joining the women’s equivalent on Czech soil after brushing aside Belinda Bencic of Switzerland and reigning Tennis Europe Junior Masters champion Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain to win their third Slam title of the season together. The pair also won at Wimbledon and Roland Garros, and later added the European Junior Championships title in Klosters, while Krejcikova also reached the Australian Open final alongside Oleksandra Korashvili (UKR). Many of the top Europeans underperformed in the Big Apple and will keen to make amends as the circuit moves to Asia before coming back to Europe to end the season. Wimbledon champion Andy Murray lost in the quarter-finals and later opted for surgery to his back which will keep him out of the game for the rest of the season, while Roger Federer suffered his earliest exit in New York in a decade in a lacklustre defeat to fellow veteran Tommy Robredo. Maria Sharapova was forced to withdraw from the event and faces an uncertain amount of time on the sidelines whilst resting a shoulder injury, and Agnieszka Radwanska has still to manage to advance past the fourth round in New York after eight appearances. Martina Hingis’ return to Grand Slam doubles action alongside Daniela Hantuchova was marred by bad luck, with the pair drawing the top seeds and world #1s Sara Errani & Roberta Vinci in the first round. But most attention remains on the Top Two, with many commentators now pondering how Djokovic will respond to the current string of defeats to Rafael Nadal. Six consecutive losses to the Serbian two years 12 Issue 114 | September 2013
ago prompted Nadal to make the changes to his game that have seen him reverse the tide and have left him on the cusp of taking away the top ranking. Can Djokovic improve his game even further in the coming months and take their rivalry to yet another level? For fans of the sport, it’s an exciting prospect. Behind the Baseline... Great Britain’s Lawn Tennis Association has announced that Michael Downey will replace Roger Draper as the organisation’s new Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Downey currently heads Tennis Canada and will take on the new role with effect from January 2014. LTA Chief Operating Officer Nick Humby will handle CEO duties from the end of this month, when Mr. Draper steps down, for the duration of the interim period.
The WTA Tournament of Champions, due to be played in Sofia from 29 October – 4 November, has announced wild cards for Ana Ivanovic and Tsvetlana Pironkova.
The 2014 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas draw has been made, with European teams involved in all but one of the World Group first round ties, due to be played from 31 January – 2 February. The draw is as follows (host nations listed first): Czech Republic vs. Netherlands, Japan vs. Canada, Germany vs. Spain, France vs. Australia, USA vs. Great Britain, Argentina vs. Italy, Kazakhstan vs. Belgium, Serbia vs. Switzerland.
Russia’s Igor Andreev has announced that he will retire at the end of the season. Compatriot and former women’s world #5 Anna Chavetadze also announced her retirement with immediate effect earlier this month.
The 2013 event will see an all-European final as Serbia hosts defending champions Czech Republic after the teams scored 3-2 semi-final wins over Canada and Argentina respectively. The final will be played during the weekend of 15-17 November. The ITF has announced that next year’s Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Europe/Africa Zone Group 1 venue will be the Syma Event & Congress Centre in Budapest, Hungary, where the ties will be played on indoor hard courts next April. 17 nations will be in action; Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Great Britain, Hungary, Israel, Latvia, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Tunisia, Turkey and Ukraine. Eurosport launched a new TV service in Germany to coincide with the US Open. Available within Germany on Sky Deutschland, Eurosport 360HD offered multi-court feeds and HD coverage from all five main courts in New York, and will offer a similar service at next year’s Australian Open and Roland Garros events. Craig Tiley is due to take over from Steve Wood as Tennis Australia’s Chief Executive Officer. Andy Murray has undergone “minor” corrective surgery to a long-standing back injury and is unlikely to play again in 2013.
Martina Hingis’ doubles comeback is on hold after the Swiss former world #1 withdrew from forthcoming events and said that she is undecided on playing next year.
Rafael Nadal has confirmed that he intends to focus on clay events during the early part of the 2014 season, and will play the inaugural Rio Open in midFebruary. The Spaniard will begin his season with Mubadala World Tennis Championship exhibition in Abu Dhabi, which begins on 26th December. Lindsay Davenport, Mary Pierce and Conchita Martinez are amongst the nominees for induction to the International Tennis Hall of Fame next year. Novak Djokovic is celebrating his 100th week as world #1, and is the ninth male player to achieve the feat. Rafael Nadal, with 102 weeks, could reclaim the top spot by reaching the final of the Masters 1000 event in Beijing next week. Meanwhile, Djokovic and partner Jelena Ristic have confirmed their engagement. Kim Ciljsters announced the birth of her second child on Twitter last week, a brother named Jack for five-year old Jada. The ATP World Tour has announced a partnership with Proseries, a sports medicine company that manufacturers ice wraps used to control pain, inflammation and aid healing. Stefan Edberg, John McEnroe, Patrick Rafter, Goran Ivanisevic and Tim Henman are amongst the players confirmed to take part in the Statoil Masters Tennis event at London’s Royal Albert Hall from 4-8 December.

Tennis Europe Junior Tour Rankings - Overall Tennis Europe’s junior ranking system is devised to give a unified overall list that shows the relative strengths of all players, regardless of where they achieved their results or picked up points, A player’s overall total includes points from Tennis Europe Junior Tour 16 and 14 & Under events, plus points earned by players in these age categories who participate in ITF Junior Circuit and professional tournaments, all of which are weighted
according to their relative strengths. The 14 & Under ranking is still available separately containing points earned exclusively at Tennis Europe Junior Tour events (see next page), as well as being integrated to these overall rankings. For more information on the rankings system, visit www.TennisEurope.org. Rankings below are as of September 24th, 2013.

Tennis Europe Junior Tour Rankings - 14 & Under Russia’s Amina Anshba has made a massive impact on the 14 & under rankings in the last few weeks, by virtue of winning three of her last four events. She followed up back-to-back Category 1 tournament wins in Velp and Munich by going on to win her first 16 & Under tournament - also a Category 1 - in Warsaw, to establish one of the most impressive win streaks of the season. As a result she enters the Top 10 at #2 and will be amongst the favourites to end the year with a Junior Masters title.
Two other Russians made significant moves in the latest update; Polina Golubovskaya’s runner-up spot and doubles win at the Category 1 16 & Under event in Munich see her break into the Top 10, while Philipp Klimov’s fifth title of the season (forst at 16 & Under level) sees him enter the boys’ Top 5. Britain’s Max Stewart is the only new-entry to the boys’ list following his singles and doubles sweep at the Category 1 event in Barcelona. Rankings below are as of September 24th, 2013.
