Payola & Oh claim titles at 50th Avvenire tournament Julia Payola of Spain and Korea’s Chan-Yeong Oh have been crowned as champions of the 50th edition of the Torneo Avvenire. The Category 1 event is held at the Tennis Club Ambrosiano in Milan, Italy, and is the oldest tournament on the Tennis Europe Junior Tour

Seeded 10th, Payola breezed through the competition without losing a set, including impressive wins over #16 Magdalena Pantuckova (CZE) and #12 Olga Danilovic (SRB) in the quarter and semi-finals. In the final, she faced Ludmilla Samsonova, a Russian player that has based in Italy for several years and consequently had plenty of support from the crowd. >>

Tennis Europe, CAT & FFT sign cooperation The Presidents of Tennis Europe, the African Tennis Confederation (CAT) and the French Tennis Federation (FFT) signed a proclamation of agreement at Roland Garros on Wednesday 4th June. Jacques Dupré, Tarak Cherif and Jean Gachassin were joined by International Tennis Federation President Francesco Ricci Bitti for the meeting, where they pledged to work together on a long-term basis in order to improve the development of tennis in Africa and Europe. The FFT has committed to sharing knowledge and human resources to assist with the project, particularly in the area of education of coaches, teachers and managers. Erik Keller Tennis Europe is sad to report the recent passing of Erik Keller, who died on May 17th at the age of 65. A popular figure in the international tennis community and a regular attendee and contributor at Tennis Europe meetings, Mr. Keller served for over 8 years as

Vice-President of Swiss Tennis and was responsible for overseeing the running of the Davis and Fed Cup team competitions. He will be greatly missed, and Tennis Europe sends condolences to his friends, family and colleagues.

21 nations to compete at European Beach Tennis Championships A record-equalling 21 nations have so far confirmed their entries for the seventh European Beach Tennis Championships, which will return to Great Britain when they are held in Brighton on the south coast of England from 8-10 August. Around 140 players are expected to take part in the event, which consists of men’s, women’s and mixed doubles competitions.

The national entry list is led by Italy, whose teams have dominated the past editions of the tournament, winning the gold and silver medals in the men’s and women’s events at all previous events. The world's top four-ranked players contested last year's men's final, with Marco Garavini & Alessandro Calbucci adding the European title to their ITF World Beach Tennis Championships win a fortnight previously. Second seeds Flamina Daina & Michaela Zanaboti claimed the women's title, while Daina & Garavini also teamed to win the mixed doubles.

Israel will compete at the Championships for the first time, whilst teams from Belarus and Turkey return to the event after a break.

Payola and Oh claim titles at 50th Avvenire tournament << The Spaniard was in no mood for concessions though, racing to a 6-2 6-3 win to pick up her first 16 & Under Tennis Europe Junior Tour title, having previously excelled at both the 12 and 14 & under age groups. Payola’s victory came in her first appearance on the Tennis Europe Junior Tour since winning the Sanchez-Casal Cup in Barcelona almost two years ago, and she becomes the fifth Spanish girl to triumph at the event. “Winning here is fantastic,” she said after the match. “I also won the Under 14 tournament in Rome, and I feel great playing in Italy.” In the boys’ final, top seed Chan-Yeong Oh fought back from the loss of the first set to overcome reigning Tennis Europe Junior Masters champion Mate Valkusz of Hungary 3-6 6-3 6-0. The luck of the draw saw Oh have to defeat Italian players in four of his five matches, but made up for it by teaming with home player Enrico Dalla Valle (his singles semi-final victim) to win the doubles title on Saturday. Oh etched his name into the record books in some style, become the first Asian player ever to win the boys’ championship at Avvenire, as well as the first player in seven years to win both singles and doubles. “I am very pleased with this success,” he said, “I won in a beautiful setting and in a beautiful city.” The week also saw some strong performances from the visiting ITF Touring Teams from Europe

and South America, who were able to test their level against many of the world’s top players in the age group. The COSAT Team did particularly well in the boys’ doubles, where Andres Ciurletti & Juan Otegui (ARG) reached the final, falling 0-6 4-6 to Dalla Valle and Oh. Inci Ogut (TUR) and Eliza Omirou (CYP) starred for the Tennis Europe team, beating home pair Martina Pratesi & Lucrezia Stefanini to claim the girls’ doubles title. Since the first edition in 1965, the Avvenire event has come to be regarded as one of the world’s toughest 16 & Under tournaments. Former champions include Grand Slam champions and world #1s including Ivan Lendl, Stefan Edberg, Juan Martín del Potro, Conchita Martinez and Martina Hingis.

In the Spotlight: Giorgio di Pietro We spoke to the tournament director of Avvenire, Giorgio di Pietro, to find out the keys to the continued success of the Tennis Europe Junior Tour’s oldest event. Why do you think that this tournament has lasted so long? The tournament has been growing since day one, and it became very prestigious; not only for the players but also for the members of the club. Without their support it would be impossible to stage the event, because it’s not always possible to balance the expenses. But everybody recognises the importance of the event. Many of our members come every day to go around the courts and discover new talents and to see the quality of players, which is of course very high. And this enthusiasm has been maintained from one generation to the next.

How did you come to be involved in the tournament? Well, I have been a member of the club for 40 years now. I have been quite active and am a member of the board. Each board member has a role according to what they like to do, so apart from this tournament, I am in charge of all the competitions of the club, and also the teams. Category 1 tournaments have a lot of requirements. As an organiser, how do you manage these? Yes, these events are very expensive, particularly the hospitality. And if you think about all of the other costs; staff, transport, promotional materials, it all adds up. We can meet some of these costs through sponsorship and small contributions from the local authorities, but it is very difficult to balance everything. But in my opinion if there is a shortfall, say of 25%, then you have to consider that this is made >>

In the Spotlight: Giorgio di Pietro << up for by the value and recognition that the club receives for hosting a prestigious tournament like this. You can’t really hope to make a profit from a junior tournament, and for this reason not many last as long as Avvenire has. For example, I know the organisers of another junior event in Italy, and six or seven years ago they decided to stop and instead offer a professional event. They told me that they find it easier to manage the tournament – even when having to pay the prize money - because more sponsors are ready to work with them. So it is a challenge. How many people work for the tournament? Usually we have four or five girls working in the players’ desk, plus a couple of drivers who support the transportation team, as the players all arrive in bus. It’s great experience for them, because they are young and get to use their languages and learn some skills. Then obviously there is me, the referee and the people who normally work within the club, whose attention is focused on the tournament throughout this week. How much preparation goes in to each event? After the end of the tournament there is some work, collecting the materials, evaluating and giving feedback to sponsors and so on. But then we take a good break. Everything starts when we get confirmation from the federation of the next date, and the fact sheet to fill in, which comes towards the end of the year. We try to maintain contact with our sponsors as well, but the big efforts usually start around February. The list of former players of this tournament is very impressive. Has the tournament ever tried to headhunt players and convince them to play? Yes, years ago this would happen, but not normally with players directly, more with their federations. Now everything is done online by the player but we used to have to convince federations to send their players. I remember many years ago the USTA did not want to send a squad and our president at the time tried to persuade them. Eventually Jennifer Capriati came – we

had a very good relationship with her and her family – and she won. We still have a battle sometimes to convince players to play. Some federations believe that their very best players of this age should be playing the junior Grand Slams. But the passage to professional tennis is getting harder and harder, so tournaments like this one are very valuable for a player. The club has big plans for expansion in the coming years. Can you tell us about that? Yes, a few years ago we won a bidding process to create a new tennis museum in Italy. So we are working with the local authority on the construction of a new building. In fact the Milan public authority is the owner of the club, and we have a renewable 20-year lease. It has been a long road to get this far, with a lot of paper work, but finally we have the green light and things are moving, as you can see [construction has already begun, with a large crater currently occupying the space next to the club, where the foundations are being laid]. We plan to be finished in the first months of next year, to coincide with Expo in Milan, which starts in April. So it should all be ready by the next edition of Avvenire. The museum sounds particularly exciting. What will it contain? Well, the building will have several facilities, including a state of the art gym. The top floor will be a museum of 900m2. We are very excited about the museum. Obviously it will be filled with historical artifacts and exhibits, but we are taking care to make it as appealing as possible for the young generation, using the latest technology to make it an interactive experience. Through touchscreens and video walls, the visitor will choose what he or she is interested in seeing. Typically you go to a museum once, but we want to ensure that people come and visit us time and again. It’s a very exciting project for us, and we will cover all aspects; the history of this tournament, of the club, of Italian tennis, and tennis in general. Hopefully we will have something on Tennis Europe too!

European Summer Cups Preview Tennis Europe has published details of the first of this year’s European Summer Cups competitions, which kick off with the 14 & Under qualifying events from June 29 - July 1st. A total of 173 national teams have entered the competitions across the three age groups. Each event will see teams split into qualifying groups of up to eight teams, from which two will progress to the final rounds. Russia has the task of defending three titles, having won the boys 14 & Under and swept the 16 & Under categories in 2013. Italy won both 18 & Under events last year, while Czech Republic claimed the Girls 14 & Under title and will open their defence at home in Rakovnik. The 14 & Under Summer Cups also serve as the European qualifying event for the ITF’s World Junior Tennis competition, while the 16 & Under events double up at the European qualifying for the Junior Davis and Fed Cup by BNP Paribas competitions. Also now online is the information relating to the summer 12 & Under team competition, the Tennis Europe Nations Challenge by HEAD. 62 national teams have entered the tournament, which will be held from 24-27 July (qualifying) and 7-10 August (finals). France and Netherlands retain World Team Cup titles Hosts Netherlands claimed an incredible 27th women’s title at wheelchair tennis’ flagship team event, the BNP Paribas World Team Cup. The defending champions were made to work hard for victory, eventually overcoming Great Britain 2-1 after coming from behind in the tie. World #10 Lucy Shuker scored an upset in the opening rubber by beating #6 Marjolein Buis 4-6 6-0 6-3. Aniek van Koot then levelled the tie for the hosts, dropping just five games to Joanne Whiley to set the stage for a deciding doubles tie, which the hosts won 6-4 6-1 to wrap up a fifteenth consecutive title for the Dutch in the women’s event. On the men’s side France also extended its win streak, securing a third successive title by beating the hosts 2-0 in singles action. Nicolas Peifer gave the defending champions an early lead with a routine 6-2 6-2 win over Tom Egberink, and world #2 Stephane Houdet then wrapped things up with a 6-3 6-2 win over the sixth-ranked player Maikel Scheffers to give the French a fourth win in six years.

The deciding doubles went to a match tie break with the Brits eventually scoring a sensational win over the three-time Paralympic gold medallists, 6-1 2-6 [10-7]. Russia claimed the junior title, weathering a determined fightback from Spain to earn a first-ever title for the nation at the World Team Cup.

Bronze medal matches saw Japan beat Germany (women’s) and Great Britain beat Japan (men’s). Belgium earned promotion to the 12-nation elite men’s World Group by winning the World Group II competition with a 2-1 win over Brazil.

Ildus Shaikhislamov reversed a loss to Feliz Garcia Perez in the round-robin stages of the competition to give the Russians an early lead before Martin de la Puente levelled the tie with a 6-3 6-1 win over the girls’ world #1 Viktoriia Lvova.

Great Britain secured the quad title for a fourth time, ending the reign of defending champions USA by the slimmest of margins.

The deciding doubles saw the Russians withstand a second set drubbing to emerge victorious with a memorable 7-6 0-6 [10-3] win.

Each team earned a decisive singles victory, with Jamie Burdekin of Great Britain conceding just one game to Nick Taylor and USA’s David Wagner beating world #3 Andy Lapthorne by the same score.

Special Olympics European Tennis Day The inaugural Special Olympics European Tennis Day took place across Europe on Monday June 16th. With more than 2,000 players with intellectual disabilities participating in 200 events across nine countries, European Tennis Day was backed by Tennis Europe and a host of national tennis federations and professional players. European Tennis Day was celebrated in Austria, Finland, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Luxembourg, Romania and Turkey. Many European tennis stars signed up to support the day including Hungary’s Agnes Szavay, Russia’s Anastasia Myskina and Mikhail Youzhny, and Alex Lisiecki, coach to Luxembourg’s Gilles Müller. Many people with intellectual disabilities lose chances to participate in tennis due to being seen by their peers as ‘different’ or ‘without ability’. The Special Olympics European Tennis Day brings the European tennis community together to create more opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities in the sport as well as celebrating the athletes’ abilities. Unified Tennis® matches and experiences served as highlights of the day giving young people with and without intellectual disabilities the opportunity to compete together and enjoy the benefit of friendship on and off the court. Regional President of Special Olympics Europe Eurasia, Mary Davis said: “European Tennis Day provides a fantastic opportunity for everyone involved in tennis to promote respect, acceptance and inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities. As we prepare to enjoy Wimbledon this month, European Tennis Day is a timely opportunity for all to show their support for Special Olympics athletes. Some of the events to take place on 2014 European Tennis Day included: Special Olympics Ambassador Agnes Szavay was joined by Gergely Kisgyörgy and four other Hungarian stars to spend the day participating in clinics and Unified Tennis experience with Special Olympics athletes in Budapest. The day ended with a free concert with Hungarian star Anita for all the athletes. In Luxembourg, Alex Lisiecki teamed up with Gilles Muller’s Luxembourg Davis Cup team mate Jacques Radoux, to lead an open tennis day on the courts of TC Stade inviting athletes with intellectual disabilities to try the game. It was followed by a Unified Tennis experience with Luxembourg tennis stars Alex Knaff, Eden Change, Nina Radioux and Lou Thomé pairing up with Special Olympics athletes in doubles exhibition matches. In Moscow, Russian tennis stars Anastasia Myskina, Mikhail Youzhny and others participated in a celebrity unified tennis tournament with Special Olympics athletes in a day of activities supported by the Eltzin Foundation. In Istanbul, similar events took place on the courts of the Swiss Hotel on the shores of the Bosphorus while in Israel, six tennis centres across the city of Tel Aviv will host Special Olympics athletes for tennis competitions and celebrity unified matches. Roland Garros 2014 The second Grand Slam event of the season was a triumph for European players, who walked away with all but one of the professional and junior titles on offer. Sunday’s highly anticipated men’s final saw the top two players in the world renew their already legendary rivalry. Novak Djokovic was desperate to win the only Grand Slam title to elude him, while Rafael Nadal was equally keen to salvage what had been – at least by his exceptional standards - a disappointing clay court season so far, as well as to make amends for the crushing disappointment of his loss in the Australian Open final in January. Early in the match, an upset seemed possible as Djokovic took a nine-game first set and looked ready to capitalise on his momentum. But Rafa eventually edged a particularly hard-fought second set and never looked back, running out a 3-6 7-5 6-2 6-4 win in three and a half hours of play in which both players had seemed to be affected by the hot conditions. Nadal’s statistics continue to defy logic; the win is his fifth consecutive Roland Garros title and ninth overall. He becomes the first man to win a Grand Slam in ten successive years and edges closer to catching Roger Federer’s record tally of Grand Slam titles, levelling with Pete Sampras at 14. The win is his 45th career clay court title, and moves him one behind alltime leader Guillermo Vilas. The women’s tournament saw a series of early shocks, with the top three seeds all having exited by the middle of the first week for the first time in the history of the event, each losing to a promising up and comer making their Slam breakthrough. Arguably the most impressive was Garbiñe Muguruza’s 6-2 6-2 second round demolition of defending champion Serena Williams, which the 19year old Spaniard followed by reaching the quarterfinals before giving Maria Sharapova a three-set scare. Indeed Sharapova was forced to three sets in each of her last four matches, but never more spectacularly so than against Simona Halep, who produced some inspired play in what was her first Grand Slam final. After conceding the first set 6-4 and an early break in the second, Halep enjoyed a golden half hour, eventually levelling after a tense tie break in which her Russian opponent gifted some uncharacteristic errors as the finish line loomed. Sharapova later paid tribute to the Romanian, who will now rise to #3 in the world, saying that the match

had been the toughest of the nine Grand Slam finals she had played. After sinking to her knees to kiss the court after match point, she expressed her delight and bewilderment that Roland Garros would turn out to be her most successful Slam at this point in her career, saying “If somebody had told me at some stage in my career that I'd have more Roland Garros titles than any other Grand Slam, I'd probably go get drunk.” Doubles Julien Benneteau & Edouard Roger-Vasselin thrilled a partisan home crowd by beating Marcel Granollers & Marc Lopez to take the men’s doubles title. Having beaten the Bryan brothers earlier in the week, the Spanish pair was heavily favoured to win their first Grand Slam title, having previously won the World Tour Finals in 2012, but went down in straight sets to the French pair to the delight of the Philippe Chatrier crowd. The world’s top pair, Hseih Su-Wei and Peng Shuai, became the only non-European players to take home the Parisian silverware with a 6-4 6-1 win over 2012 champions Sara Errani & Roberta Vinci of Italy. The Taipei/Chinese pair cement their recentlyattained #1 status, though the Italians may be able to reclaim the top spot with a good performance at Wimbledon next month. Anna-Lena Groenefeld (GER) and Jean-Julien Roger (NED) fought back from a set down to claim the mixed doubles title over Julia Goerges (GER) & Nenad Zimonjic (SRB). The win marked a first Grand Slam title for Rojer, while Groeneveld claimed the Wimbledon title in 2009 alongside Mark Knowles.

Roland Garros 2014 coming months, Sharapova now looks set to join Halep in pressuring Serena Williams for the top spot by the end of the year. On the men’s side, Andy Murray’s return to the Paris semi-finals, and the recruitment of new coach Amelie Mauresmo will boost his confidence as he attempts to defend his Wimbledon title, while few would bet against a 43rd chapter in the story of Nadal vs. Djokovic being written in the coming weeks.

Juniors The junior competitions saw the reigning European 16 & Under champions confirm their potential with a perfect transition to junior Grand Slam tennis. Darya Kasatkina fought back from a set down to oust top seed Ivana Jorovic of Serbia in what she said would be her final match as a junior. Andrey Rublev has been busy of late, winning his first ITF Pro Circuit title the week prior to Roland Garros, and he continued his good form by reversing a loss to former Tennis Europe Junior Masters champion Jaume Munar Clar of Spain earlier this year. Both 17year olds were appearing in their first Junior Slam finals, and Rublev achieves the notable feat of becoming the first Russian boy to win in Paris since 1966. The girls doubles showed that the future for Romanian remains bright beyond the immediate success of Simona Halep as Ioana Ducu and Ioana Rosca edged past Catherine Cartan Bellis of the USA last year’s European 14 & Under silver medallist Marketa Vondrousova (CZE) in a 20-point champion’s tie break. The boys doubles gave the home crowds something to cheer as Benjamin Bonzi and Quentin Halys teamed up to beat Lucas Miedler (AUT) & Akira Santillan (AUS) for the loss of just six games. It will be interesting to analyse the significance of results at this year’s French Open throughout the rest of the year. Many talented players, including muchheralded names such as Taylor Townsend, Kristina Mladenovic and Ernests Gulbis, enjoyed potentially career changing performances, but as the Tour makes its annual sudden change to grass, maintaining that form is an extra challenge. At the top of the tree, and with comparatively few points to defend in the

Behind the Baseline... The annual ITF World Champions Dinner was held during Roland Garros and saw awards given in recognition of some outstanding achievements. Australian doubles legends Mark Woodforde and Todd Woodbridge were given the ITF’s highest honour, the Philippe Chatrier Award, while Heide Orth of Germany received the second ITF Seniors Award in recognition of her status as the most decorated senior women’s player in history. Aso receiving awards were the 2013 World Champions Novak Djokovic (men), Serena Williams (women), Bob & Mike Bryan and Sara Errani & Roberta Vinci (doubles), Alexander Zverev and Belinda Bencic (juniors) and Shingo Kuneida and Aniek van Koot (wheelchair). The draw for the 2015 Fed Cup by BNP Paribas is as follows (home teams listed first): Canada vs. Czech Republic, Italy vs. France, Poland vs. Russia, Germany vs. Australia. World Group II is as follows: Netherlands vs. Slovakia, Romania vs. Spain, Sweden vs. Switzerland, Argentina vs. USA. Ties will be played during the weekend of 7-8 February, with play-offs and semi-finals to follow on 18-19 April. Eurosport recorded impressive viewing figures at the recent French Open, with the average 3.8 million viewers during the final between Maria Sharapova and Simona Halep making it the channel’s mostwatched women’s tennis match ever. The men’s final between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic fell just shy of the record 4.2 million viewers that viewed the match between the same players in Australia earlier this year. Players at the recent F12 $10,000 ITF Pro Circuit event in Bol, Croatia got together to organise a charity event to benefit those affected by the recent flooding in Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia (pictured, below). Between them, the players, coaches and referees took part in a wide range of activities and raised around €1,000 for the fund.

Australian Bob Brett has been announced as the new player development director at Britain’s Lawn Tennis Association and will oversee the organisation’s high performance program. The WTA has announced a pre-Wimbledon grass court event to be held on the Spanish island of Mallorca in 2016. The Junior Davis and Fed Cup by BNP Paribas finals will be played at the Caja Magica in Madrid from 2015-2017. The WTA season-ending championships, due to be held in Singapore for the first time in October, will be rebranded as the WTA Finals. Grigor Dimitrov became the first player this year to win ATP World Tour titles on three different surfaces by claiming the Queen’s Club tournament last week. Frenchman Michael Llodra drew the curtain on his singles career at Roland Garros, but will still compete in doubles. Injury watch: Tommy Haas will miss the rest of the season due to an ongoing shoulder injury. Laura Robson says she expects to start hitting sponge balls in mid-August as she continues rehabilitation following wrist surgery. Romanian #1 Victor Hanescu launched the third edition of his ‘Every champion has a beginning’ campaign recently in Craiova, supplying tennis and sports equipment to over 100 talented youngsters. The player (pictured below) also took part in a question-and-answer session with the young players and their parents. The campaign, which aims to promote the sport and offer further opportunities to inspire young players, will move on to 7 other Romanian cities in the near future.

Tennis Europe Junior Tour Latest Everyone at the Tennis Europe Junior Tour was saddened by the tragic news that 16 & Under player George Gougouris of Cyprus was fatally injured in a traffic accident on Saturday 3rd May. Gougouris had been due to compete at the Tennis Europe Junior Tour event at his home Eleon Tennis Club that week, and the news came as a terrible shock to the organisers and competitors at the tournament, which began a day late as a mark of respect for this talented young player and to allow his friends and teammates to attend his funeral. Fact sheets and national entry lists for the European Junior Championships are now online. The 14 & Under event will be held in Pilzen (CZE), the 16 & Unders visit Moscow (RUS), and the 18 & Under event will once again be held in Klosters (SUI). Rudolf Molleker and Yshai Oliel have been engaged in a quite a battle for the 14 & Under #1 ranking in recent weeks. Oliel became the first Israeli player since Dudi Sela to hold the spot recently after winning back-to-back 16 & Under tournaments in his native Israel. Winter Cups winner Molleker soon took over, winning his second consecutive Category 1 event in Piestany, before reaching a 16 & Under final of his own, in Maribor. Just five points currently separate the two players; could the European Championships be the decider in their impressive season? Tamara Arnold shot up 50 places in the 16 & Under rankings by sweeping the singles and doubles titles at the Grawe Open in Maribor. She beat Germany’s Carmen Schultheiss for the singles title but there were no hard feelings as the pair then teamed up to take the doubles title afterwards. The ITF/COSAT 16 & Under Touring team has been having some great success in recent weeks. Genaro Olivieri of Argentina began the six-week stay in Europe by winning the singles and doubles (with compatriot Camilo Ugo Carabelli) at Category 1 Biella. The following week in Foligno, Ugo Carabelli reached the singles final while Olivieri fell at the semifinal stage. Fellow Argentine Melany Krywoj teamed up with Camila Romero of Ecuador to win the girls’ doubles. This week, the team moves on to the Category 2 event in Crema. Adela Joldic of Bosnia & Herzegovina is currently enjoying one of the longest win streaks on the Tour. Last weekend she wrapped up her third consecutive singles title at the 14 & Under Category 3 event in Mostar.

Timofey Skatov (RUS) won back-to-back tournaments in Montenegro recently, following up a victory in Ulcinj with singles and doubles victories (alongside Rail Ibragimov) in Niksic. This week sees the Tour’s only combined 12, 14 and 16 & Under event - the Riga Open - take place in Latvia. The tournament also has a simultaneous ITF Juniors 18 & Under event, making it one of the world’s busiest junior tournaments! Race to the Masters update: Three Italian boys are currently in contention to qualify to compete at the Tennis Europe Junior Masters in Reggio Calabria, with Federico Bertolucci, Riccardo Balzerani and Giovanni Fonio all ranked in the 16 & Under Top Ten. Russians also figure prominently, with Anastasia Potapova, Olesya Pervushina and Tatiana Makarova currently occupying the Top 3 spots on the Girls’ 14 & Under list and Ekaterina Vishnevskaya at #1 in the 16 & Unders. Only the top six players in each age group are guarenteed a spot at the Masters, with spaces also reserved for the winner and runner-up at the forthcoming European Junior Championships.
