European 14 & Under Championships in Pilsen Rudolf Molleker of Germany and Russia’s Anastasia Potapova are the new European 14 & Under Champions after coming through contrasting matches on the final day of the Championships in Pilsen (CZE). Molleker, the second seed in the boys’ event, blasted his way best home hope Tomas Jirousek for the loss of just a single game to claim his second medal of the tournament. Still just 13 years of age, the prodigious German had been in imperious form throughout the week, winning the tournament without conceding a set. The win was also a historic one; his victory enabled him to reclaim the top spot on the Tennis Europe Junior Tour rankings, and he became the first 14 & Under player in over 30 years to win the European Junior Championships and play on the winning Winter and Summer Cups teams in the same season. He also becomes the first German boy since Florian Loddenkemper in 1984 to win the 14 & Under Championship. The victory over Jirousek would have been sweet for the eventual champion, after the third seed had caused double consternation for the Germans on Saturday, ending Nicola Kuhn’s hopes of securing an all-German final and teaming with Ezven Holis to snatch gold from Molleker & Kuhn in the doubles final. Overall the boys’ event went largely with form, with the only unseeded players to reach the quarterfinals being Leonid Sheyngezikht (BUL) and Jake Hersey (GBR), both of whom scored upsets over Top 10 opposition. Anastasia Potapova dominated the girls’ event in equally impressive style, never dropping more than seven games in a match en route to her fourth final of the season on the Tennis Europe Junior Tour. The third seed had looked particularly impressive in a 6-3 6-0 win over #2 Dayana Yastremska (UKR) in the semifinals and picked up where she left off in the final, blasting to a 6-1 first set win over her Winter Cups team-mate Olesya Pervushina. Pervushina has spent most of this season as Europe’s #1 in her age group and used her big match experience to fight back in the second, levelling the match with a 6-2 scoreline. However, forced to play a deciding set for the first time in the Championship, Potapova found an extra gear in the third set and 2

broke at will to emerge triumphant, 6-2. The win means that Potapova leapfrogged her compatriot to take the top spot in Tennis Europe’s 14 & Under rankings, but there will surely be no hard feelings between the two friends and team-mates. Their domination of the event was such that they also teamed up to take the doubles crown. The final match proved to be a seesaw battle against the same Ukrainian players that they beat in the singles semifinals, Kataryna Zavatska and Dayana Yastremska, eventually winning 6-7(5), 6-0, [10-7]. All four European Junior Championship finalists automatically qualify to compete at the Tennis Europe Junior Masters in Reggio Calabria in October. European 16 & Under Championships in Moscow Fanny Stollar and Corentin Moutet continued their smooth progression through the junior ranks to claim the European 16 & Under Championship titles in Moscow. Stollar had a particularly impressive week, claiming both singles and doubles gold medals for Hungary. Seeded second in the singles competition, she remained steady while her fellow seeds succumbed to a series of surprise early losses, advancing to the final without conceding a set in any of her matches. By contrast, her final opponent, home hope Anna Blinkova had fought hard to survive several brushes with disaster, notably outlasting Nikolina Jovic (SRB) in a final set tie break in the quarterfinals and recovering from the brink of defeat to end the hopes of unseeded Hana Mraz (SLO) in the semis, 4-6 7-6(6) 6-2. The final turned out to be a one-sided affair. Once Stollar scored a decisive break to claim the first set she never looked back, with the Russian unable to win another game. Stollar therefore becomes the third Hungarian girl to claim the European 16 & Under title, and first since Timea Babos did so in 2008. A day earlier, Stollar had teamed up Dalma Galfi to win the doubles gold over Russians Anna Kalinskaya & Aleksandra Pospelova. The win must have been particularly satisfying for Stollar, who lost the 2013 gold medal match alongside Anna Bondar.
The win marks the third time in the last five years that a French boy has claimed the 16 & Under title, with Moutet following in the footsteps of Mattias Bourgue (2010) and Enzo Couacaud (2011).
The boys’ singles final turned out to be a battle between the last two winners of the European 14 & Under title as 2012 champion Mikael Ymer of Sweden faced reigning champ Corentin Moutet of France.
The previous day, Kenneth Raisma & Mattias Siimar made history by claiming the boys' doubles crown with a straight sets win over Czechs Patrik Rikl and Alessandro Ricci to become the first Estonians ever to win the title.
Both players were in great form throughout the week in Moscow, and underlined their promise by taking out the top two seeds Mate Valkusz (Moutet, 6-0 64) and Stefanos Tsitsipas (Ymer, 7-5 7-5) in the semi-finals.
Both singles champions in Moscow leapt into the upper reaches of the Top 10 of the Tennis Europe junior rankings following the event. As with the 14 & Under Championships, all four finalists automatically qualify to compete in the Tennis Europe Junior Masters in Reggio Calabria in October.
Moutet had the early advantage, consolidating an early break to lead 4-1 in the first set before Ymer came back to claim the set on a tie break. The loss of the first set seemed to sting the French boy into action though and he reeled off twelve of the next thirteen games to become the first boy since Mats Wilander to claim European Championship titles in two different age categories in successive years. 3

European 18 & Under Championships in Klosters The European 18 & Under titles have gone to Frenchman Quentin Halys and Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo after both players beat rivals from their own country in the final. For a short while, it looked as if the final matches could be played outside. But shortly before players were due on court, the strongest ‘player’ in Klosters this week – the rain - once again denied organisers a punctual start. Both matches were delayed and players, staff and spectators eventually moved to Davos. Of course, it would have been nicer to play outside but the intensity didn’t suffer from the change. Quentin Halys and Corentin Denolly showed tennis of an extremely high level with heavily-favored Halys eventually prevailing 6-4 7-5. The #2 seed was stronger towards the end of each set, and also appeared the fresher player mentally, with Denolly committing two double faults on the final two points. An understandable let down for the in-form player, who was playing in his 27th match of this month. For Halys, who had won the doubles on Saturday alongside standard partner Johan Sébastien Tatlot, a perfect week came to an end. A finalist in 2013, he now leaves the Swiss mountains with two gold medals. “From last year, I knew what to expect and I coped well with the conditions. I definitely couldn’t have asked for more”, Halys said. He is the seventh French winner in Klosters. To top their triumph off, France also won the nations ranking. Sara Sorribes Tormo is only the second female from Spain to lift the trophy after Carla Suarez Navarro in 2006, though Spanish legends Arantxa SanchezVicario and Conchita Martinez each claimed titles in the younger age categories. She defeated her doubles partner and best friend Paula Badosa Gibert 6-4 6-1 to claim the title. The resistance of her younger opponent was broken after Sorribes Tormo took a close first set. Sorribes was competing in Klosters for a second time, having forced top seed Belinda Bencic into a deciding set in the quarterfinal last year, and she also won the 16 & Under Championship in 2012. Already focusing on the professional tour, Klosters was Sorribes’ first junior event since the US Open 2013. Sorribes & Badosa had already claimed one medal by virtue of their runner-up spot in the doubles on Saturday. They were beaten by Britain's Emily Arbuthnott & Freya Christie, who became the first 4

players from their nation to win the title since the very first Championship in 1976. Persistent rainstorms throughout the week meant that a lot of patience was required from all of the participants at this year’s in Championships. In total, four days out of seven were washed out, with players and officials scrambling for indoor courts at neighbouring towns. The organizing team around tournament director Hans Markutt rose to the challenge and received lots of positive feedback for their high-quality work and the extra hours. Klosters will host the 18 & Under Championships for at least two more years, with 2016 marking the 20th anniversary of the first edition of the tournament held in the mountain resort. After this year, better weather is virtually guaranteed! Draws, results and photos from Klosters can be found here.

Italy & Russia defend Tennis Europe Nations Challenge by HEAD titles Italy and Russia have successfully defended their 12 & Under Tennis Europe Nations Challenge by HEAD titles. At the boys’ finals in Alanya (TUR), Italy became the first team to seal a title when both boys won their singles matches against Serbia to ease to an unassailable 2/0 lead. The opening match saw Uros Jovic of Serbia start well, clinching the first set against Lorenzo Musetti on a tie-break. The Italian came back strongly though, showing the form that won him the title in Padova recently to claim the next sets 6-2 6-3 and put his team ahead.
Above: Russia’s girls team in Ajaccio
Italian #1 Fausto Tabacco has become accustomed to winning in recent weeks, taking singles titles in Maglie and Porto san Giorgio in addition to three doubles titles this season, and made short work of Viktor Jovic in the second singles match, winning 6-4 6-2. Tabacco was then joined by Lorenzo Rottoli to complete a 3-0 sweep when the pair conceded just two games to Jovic and Goran Zivotic in the doubles rubber.
out on top earlier this week in the final of the 14 & Under World Junior Tennis event, as well in the singles and doubles finals at the European 14 & Under Championships. Sadly for Ukraine, any hopes of turning the tables on those defeats were short-lived. Russia’s Daria Frayman has won three 12 & Under titles already on the Tennis Europe Junior Tour this season and used her experience to overcome a second set fight back from occasional doubles partner Daria Snigur to claim a 6-2 4-6 6-1 win.
The one-sided final tie was in contrast to the earlier matches of the two teams, with Italy having had to come from a match down to beat Romania and Czech Republic, while Serbia were also taken the full distance by Switzerland and Spain.
Maria Novikova then extended her impressive Tour win streak to 19 matches with a 6-0 7-5 win over Marta Kostyuk to complete her team’s title defence before Kostyuk and partner Dasha Lopatetskaya were able to claim a consolation point in the doubles with a 6-2 6-2 win over Frayman and Alina Chareva.
The girls’ finals in Ajaccio (FRA) saw a battle between Russia and Ukraine, who between them had combined to win all but one of the previous editions of the tournament. Both teams emerged unbeaten from their round-robin groups, with Ukraine sailing past Turkey, Czech Republic and Netherlands for the loss of just one set, while Russia conceded just two more sets in beating Poland, Great Britain and Belgium. The two nations have met often in recent weeks in major junior events, with Russia coming
The bronze medal play-off matches saw Czech Republic beat Spain 2/1 in the boys’ competition and Turkey beat Poland 2/0 in the girls’. In all, a total of 62 national teams took part in the 2014 event. The victories are the third for Italy’s boys and fifth for Russia’s girls in the 8-year history of the competition. France and Hungary claim European 16 & Under team titles France and Hungary have won the 16 & Under Summer Cups titles to complete sweeps of the 2014 European team competitions in this age category and confirm their places amongst the tournament favourites at next month’s Junior Davis and Fed Cup by BNP Paribas finals in Mexico. Hosting the final rounds of the event in Budapest for the first time, the Hungarians made the most of their home support throughout the week, coming from behind to win their opening tie against Great Britain and surviving another decisive doubles match in the semi-final with Belarus. Ironically, the final turned out to be their easiest encounter of the whole tournament. Dalma Galfi put the top seeds ahead with a routine 6-3 6-4 win over France’s Tessah Andrianjafitrimo in a match that lasted just over an hour. Fresh from winning the European 16 & Under Championships in Moscow last week, Fanny Stollar then added another milestone to her increasingly impressive junior career. She was made to work much harder than her team-mate by Lucie Wargnier, who snatched the first set on a tie-break, but came back strongly in the last two sets to emerge a 6-7(4) 6-3 6-2 winner. Hungary’s girls are enjoying unprecedented success in 2014. Having won the Tennis Europe Winter Cups by HEAD in February for a second time, this win represents the first time that the national team has won the Summer title. In addition to Stollar’s European Championships singles win, she and Galfi also teamed up to claim the gold medal in doubles in Moscow.

The runner-up spot also marked progress for the French team, who surprisingly have not triumphed in the Girls 16 & Under event since 1994, and had appeared in the final only once since, in 1996. France also managed a home win by claiming the boys’ Borotra Cup title in Le Touquet with a similarly one-sided win over Germany. >>

France and Hungary claim European 16 & Under team titles << The two teams had contrasting paths to the final. France beat Sweden in their opening match, which included a repeat win for Corentin Moutet over Mikael Ymer, with the two playing for the second time in two weeks after facing off in the European Championships final. The hosts then went on to beat Estonia 3/0 to claim a berth in the final and a chance of earning a record tenth Borotra Cup title. Germany had caused shocked fourth seeds and defending champions Russia in the quarterfinals, reversing a defeat in last year’s championship match, and went on to upset second seeds Italy in the semi-finals. After play was washed out by rain on the final morning, Ugo Humbert put the hosts ahead with a hard-
fought 6-2 4-6 6-3 win over Daniel Altmaier. Moutet then stepped up in his now familiar role of French #1 and showed no mercy to Valentin Guenther, conceding just two games to secure the title and join an elite band of players to win the European individual and team championships back-to-back. The win marks the sixth time that the French 16 & Under team has swept both the Winter and Summer Cups titles in the same season, and the fifth such occasion since 2005. Full results and photos can be found here. The top five boys’ and top six girls’ Summer Cups teams (see table on previous page) qualify for the Junior Davis and Fed Cup by BNP Paribas finals in Mexico next month.

Serbia & Spain triumph at 18 & Under Summer Cups Spain and Serbia have won the 2014 18 & Under European Summer Cups titles, with both teams scoring commanding victories on the final day of the competition. Pedro Martinez Portero gave the top seeded Spaniards an early lead at the boys’ finals in Venice (ITA), surviving a close first set before accelerating away from Poland’s Hubert Kurkacz 7-6(4) 6-2. Junior world #5 and former Tennis Europe Junior Masters champion Jaume Munar Clar then won the battle of the teams’ top players against Kamil Majchrzak by an almost identical score to secure the trophy, 7-6(4) 6-3. The win is Spain’s first at the Galea/Valerio Cup since 2003, and tenth overall. At the final rounds of the Soisbault/Reina Cup in Granville (FRA), Serbia won two tight singles matches against Romania to claim the girls’ championship for the first time in the 49-year history of the event. Nina Stojanovic opened the tie with a morale-boosting win for third-seeded Serbia, coming back from the brink of defeat to Ioana Ducu to emerge a 4-6 76(2) 6-1 winner. Junior world #1 Ivana Jorovic then overcame Ioana Loredana Rosca 6-2 3-6 6-3 to put the tie out of reach of the Romanians. Both teams had reached the final after scoring upsets; Romania ended the hopes of top seeds Czech Republic in the quarterfinals and fourth seeds Slovakia in the semis, while Serbia had beaten defending champions Italy before ending Hungary’s hopes of a sweep of 16 and 18 & Under girls’ titles.

Germany leads race to European Tennis Trophy Germany has opened a commanding lead in the race to the 2014 European Tennis Trophy, having earned more than double the points of nearest challenger the Czech Republic as the season passes its half-way point. The strong position of Germany comes from improved performances in all four contributing categories. Victories for German teams at the Tennis Europe Winter Cups by HEAD and European Summer Cups plus a return to the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas final for the first time in over 20 years have led to the country being ranked second in both Junior and Professional tennis categories. Should Germany go on to claim the overall title, it would be the first time that the country tops the Trophy tables since 1996. Germany typically dominates in senior tennis and this year is no exception. With most of the senior tennis points already allocated, the Senior Tennis Trophy is already secure by a massive margin over second placed Austria. Currently in second place overall, the Czech Republic is still in contention to recapture the overall title that they won last won in 2012, but holds a slim lead over France, Italy and defending champions Russia. Further down the overall Top 10, the Netherlands and Great Britain are neck-and-neck in sixth and seventh position, with the Brits threatening to claim the Wheelchair Tennis Trophy from the Dutch for the first time since the category was introduced in 2001.
Improved performances in international team competitions such as the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas (pictured) have contributed to Germany’s lead.

The first Trophy Race update of 2014 includes all points earned by nations during the first six months of the year. Rankings that use a rollover 52-week system are not included to the point totals at this stage. The final point standings will be announced during the first week of the 2015 season, and the awards presented to national federations at the 2015 Tennis Europe Annual General Meeting, which will be held in Lausanne (SUI) from 26-29 March. European Beach Tennis Championships in Brighton Italian players once again swept the board at the European Beach Tennis Championships, scooping all three available gold medals for a seventh consecutive year. Over 130 players were in action at the event, representing a record-equalling 21 European nations. The tournament was held for a second successive year at Brighton’s Yellowave Centre and hosted by the British Lawn Tennis Association. Hot on the heels of the defence of their World Championships title, men’s top seeds Alessandro Calbucci & Marco Garavini wasted little time in repeating as European Champions. The pair breezed through the event without the loss of a set a beat compatriots Luca Cramarossi and Luca Meliconi 6-1 6-4 to remain unbeaten after two editions of the competition in Brighton. For Meliconi, the defeat meant a fourth loss in the European Championships final, while the win was Garavini’s fourth European title overall. The pair also scored a unique triple, adding the European title to their World Team and Individual Championships titles, and became the first men’s pair to successfully defend the European title. Spain claimed the bronze medal, as Antomi Ramos Viera & Saulo Tejada recovered from a set down to beat unseeded Cyrille Lamy & David Mottin (FRA) 46 6-2 [10-7]. The women’s title was also claimed by the top seeds. World #3 Veronica Visani claimed her first European title alongside 2012 winner Eva D’Elia when they beat fellow-Italians Federica Baccheta & Sofia Cimatti 6-4 6-4, reversing a loss at the World Championships last week.

There was an all-French bronze medal match as fourth seeds Manuela Amiard & Pauline Bourdet edged third seeds Marie-Eve & Mathilde Hoarau by the slimmest of margins, 5-7 6-4 [11-9]. With play originally delayed by several hours on the final day due to stormy conditions caused by the remnants of Hurricane Bertha, the last event to be completed was the mixed doubles, which saw yet another all-Italian final. Hours after securing his first European title, Luca Cramarossa picked up a second, teaming up with Eva D’Elia to outlast Garavini & Bacchetta 6-2 6-7(6) [10-8]. The win is a second European mixed title for D’Elia, who has now reached the gold medal match in four consecutive years. Nikita Burmakin & Daria Churakova of Russia denied Spain a second bronze, conceding just five games to Ramos Viera and his partner Rosa Sitja. Full draws and results from the Championships can be found here.

In the Spotlight: Nicola Kuhn & Rudolph Molleker Nicola Kuhn and Rudolf Molleker are spearheading a memorable season on the Tennis Europe Junior Tour for Germany. Both have spent the year so far ranked firmly inside the 14 & Under Top 10, and the pair has combined to win both European team competitions, the Tennis Europe Winter Cups by HEAD and the Copa Del Sol, as well as a number of individual events. Recently they reaffirmed their dominance when Molleker won the European Junior Championships (Kuhn reached the semifinals) and they teamed up to claim doubles silver medals. We caught up with them in Pilsen to ask them to evaluate their season so far… This year’s Winter Cups win was a big one for Germany; the first in thirty years. How was the tournament for you? Rudi Molleker: Well, it was the first time we’d played together on a team. We’d met before a few times, and had played doubles together, but not at a team event. Once we started to play we felt very good together. We didn’t think that we would win the cup, just because it was our first time together, so it was unbelievable. And after that at the Summer Cups we felt differently, like “OK, so we know we can win this!” Did you feel more pressure at the Summer Cups, knowing that you had won the Winter Cups in Correggio? Nicola Kuhn: Not really. We had to play one match at a time and try to do our best. Of course we had the motivation to win the Summer Cup and be able to win both events, but really there was no extra pressure for us from outside. The Summer Cups also serve as the qualifying for the worldwide 14 & Under team event. What do you expect from the World Junior Tennis finals in Prostejov? NK: Well, we have to play good of course, because the players there are very good – the best in the world. We just have to play one round at a time and not think about the finals too much. [The boys went on the win the championship, beating Canada 2/1 in the final] What have been your other favourite tournaments this year? You have both had some impressive results on the regular Tennis Europe Junior Tour. RM: Mine was definitely Tim Essonne in France, that’s the best I have played this year. I beat three good guys and in the finals I beat the top guy from Russia [Alen Avidzba] 6-0 6-0, which was unbeliev-
12 Issue 120 > August 2014
able. So that was definitely my biggest tournament. NK: Mine was at Tarbes [Les Petits As], where I lost in the final. Everybody was playing there, him also [Molleker], so to reach the final, and play against the French guy in front of a big crowd, was a big thing for me. I won at Bolton the week before, which was also a good result so those were a good two weeks. When you play against each other, who wins? RM: Well, we’ve played only once so far… NK: It was quite a tough match, and he won in the third set. But we’re going to play many, many times in the future, so it won’t be the last one! Nicola, you train at an academy in Spain. How did that come about? NK: I live in Germany normally, but since I was small we would always go to a summer house in Spain for holidays. I was also practicing when I was there and then two and a half years ago, we saw that the academy of Juan Carlos Ferrero [Equelite] was fairly close – not really near, but about 120km from my house, so we thought OK, let’s try to train there and see if I like it. I liked it a lot, and now I’m living there at the Academy and that’s where I train. What’s it like to live away from home at 14? NK: [Laughs] To be honest I feel quite at home everywhere I go! But it’s a very nice atmosphere there. They support us a lot when we travel on social media, and it’s a good motivation. They are doing a very good job; Ferrero is on court with us most of the days, and that’s very helpful. Everybody there supports everybody else. Where do you live and train, Rudi? RM: I stay in Berlin, where I practise with my coach. I’ve been with him since I was 5 so we’ve already come a long way. Sometimes I go to Hannover >>

<< where I play with Nicolas Kiefer and I have like 10 weeks in the year where I can practise there with him, so that helps me a lot. Who would you say are your tennis heroes and inspirations? RM: Mine is Roger Federer. I just love to watch him on the court. He is quiet on the court and focused on his game. It’s unbelievable to watch him, especially his footwork and his technique. NK: Well, it’s quite difficult for me to say because I like Djokovic very much. He fights all the time and produces some unbelievable shots. But most of all, I think I admire Ferrer. Also I know him very well, since I was 8 years old. I have practised with him in Hamburg at
13 Issue 120 > August 2014
What are your goals for the rest of this season? NK: Obviously this week [the European Junior Championships], and the World Junior Tennis finals. Both are important, and we want to have as many as wins as possible, together and separately, because it’s vital for our confidence. At the end of the year maybe the Orange Bowl. The calendars are not fixed yet, you have to be a little bit flexible… Will we see you at the Tennis Europe Junior Masters? NK: I don’t know… RM: It depends. I don’t know if we will qualify…[in fact, Molleker qualified automatically by winning the European Junior Championships, while Kuhn is currently in fifth place in the Race to Masters rankings] NK: There is an Under 14 event at the ATP Valencia Open, so that is also a goal for me. Then afterwards we have to prepare well for the next year, because we will think about Under 16s and starting to play ITF events too. RM: It’s also important to rest and not play too many events. Some holidays are nice, too!

SMS INC. Announces Results of 30th Wimbledon Equipment Census SPORTS MARKETING SURVEYS INC. (SMS INC.), the official partner of Tennis Europe, has recorded the equipment, clothing and footwear used by competitors at The Wimbledon Championships for the past 30 years, not only in the men’s and women’s singles but across all 12 categories including juniors, invitational and wheelchair competitions. Following their 30th consecutive year as research provider to the All England Lawn Tennis Club, SMS INC. has unveiled the results of the 2014 equipment census at The Championships, and has compared these results against the equipment used by Tennis Europe Junior Tour players. The results offer exclusive insight into equipment trends at tennis’ most prestigious event, and the ramifications for brands when worldwide exposure is gained, particularly regarding junior elite players such as those on the Tennis Europe Tour. Offered as part of the complete census are listings of equipment and clothing from racquet, racquet bag and string to shoes, shirt, shorts and skirt. For the 20th consecutive year at The Wimbledon Championships, Wilson was the number-one racquet manufacturer. This year’s event was particularly successful for the brand with 11 racquets in play in the last 16 of the men’s & ladies’ singles – or 34% of the racquets at this stage of the tournament. Continuing its considerable momentum in the sport, Babolat gained market share at The Championships for the sixth consecutive year. No brand has had a longer growth-streak in SMS’ three decades at the event. They are established as the number two racquet brand at the event – and the number one racquet brand among all female competitors with a 33% players’ share. While both Wilson and Babolat can claim to have had successful Wimbledon Championships, HEAD were the brand that gained the highest number of racquets year-on-year, increasing their stable by 20. HEAD also had the highest percentage of winners, with nine Champions including Men’s Singles in Novak Djokovic, completing their most successful Championships for 10 years. SMS INC.’s detailed annual report also documents each brand’s time on the main show courts during the Championships. In the men’s singles competition Tennis Europe partner HEAD, managed to top show court exposure largely thanks to their racquet sponsorship of champion Djokovic who amassed

almost five more ‘show-court hours’ than second placed Roger Federer. The influence of such players is clear to see. The three leading brands Wilson, Babolat and HEAD, are also the top 3 racquet brands used by players competing on the Tennis Europe Junior Tour, accounting for an 84% share, with Babolat claiming top spot with 33% of players. The shoe brands favoured by the pros at Wimbledon were also noted in SMS INC.’s complete report, Nike and Adidas continue to dominate, sharing 70% of the show-court exposure. Similar trends are also witnessed among Tennis Europe Junior Tour players with Nike and Adidas claiming the top 2 ranks albeit with a reduced lead. Asics is the number 3 brand for Tennis Europe players, and combined with Nike and Adidas account for 70% of the share. European Senior Championships in Sofia The third edition of the European Seniors Championships took place from 7-11 July in Sofia, where the tournament was hosted by the Bulgarian Tennis Federation and played at the National Tennis Centre and the nearby Dema Club. Over 200 players took part in the event, including three of the ITF Senior Circuit’s current world #1s and 26 other Top Ten players. The first category to be settled was the women’s 35s, where home player Biljana Pawlowa-Dimitrova successfully defended her title, finishing ahead of Germany’s Jessica Schmidt in the round-robin event. World #4 Daniel Dolbea made a push for the top of the men’s rankings by beating German compatriot Carsten Groeger in straight sets to claim the men’s 35s title. The 40s events saw more success for German men, as Gerhard Fahlke strengthened his position as world #1 with a crushing 6-0 6-0 win over home hope Yuri Donchev. Meanwhile world #2 Ana SalasLozano of Spain put in an equally impressive display in the women’s event, losing just two games to Diane Guns (BEL) to secure the title. The men’s 45s title went to a Finnish player for the second time in three years. On this occasion Alexander Lindholm upset top seed Jorgen Aberg (SWE) in a match between two of the world’s Top 15 players. Defending champion Konstantinos Effraimoglu was forced to withdraw from the men’s 50s event, paving the way for an all-Austrian final in which Manfred Hundstorfer conceded just five games to Alexander Jahn. Ingrid Gutmann-Resch added to the Austrian domination by claiming the women’s title over Barbora Koutna. In the 55s events, Eva Bogar Szabo of Hungary ended the reign of Gunda Weiland (GER), while top seed Pierre Godfroid of Belgium successfully defended his title over Karl Pansy (AUT). Spain swept the Over 60s titles. Javier Lazcano Hernandez scored a series of upsets to take the men’s title, beating the top three seeds and both of the 2013 finalists en route to the title. In the final he beat world #5 and defending champion Bruno Renoult (FRA) 6-2 7-6(7). Last year’s 55s runner-up Encarnacion Gomis Ruiz then claimed the women’s gold medal by finishing above Dagmar Sperneder of Austria in the round-robin.

Men’s 45s doubles gold medallists Jorgen Aberg (SWE) and Michael Braeuer (AUT).
Another run was ended in the men’s 65s, where defending champion Valentin Raus of Romania was outlasted by third seed Gerd Dahmen of Germany in three sets in the final. Heidemarie Oehlsen made it a German double by repeating her win in the 2013 final over Pinuccia Sacchi Caridi (ITA). The70s categories saw two legends of seniors tennis extend their record breaking tallies of European titles. Austria’s Peter Pokorny was made to work hard by Peter Adrigan in a final between the world´s top two players, but eventually triumphed in three sets. Meanwhile, Heide Orth, recently recognised by the ITF for her outstanding achievements in seniors tennis, claimed another title by topping her roundrobin group with ease. Sweden’s Rolf Westman defended his men’s 75s title with a win over top seed Heinz Abernig (AUT), while the most senior of all titles, the men’s 80s, went to the most senior player - Henri Crutchet of France, who conceded just three games to Russia’s Gabriel Ryzhevskiy. Unseeded Ryzhevskiy had beaten defending champion Angelo Sala (ITA) in a match tie-break in the first round. The European Championships is a Grade B1 event on the ITF Seniors Circuit and offers 210 ranking points to the winners, making the event the biggest in Europe in terms of points available. Draws, results, photos and a full list of results and winners can be found here.

In the Spotlight: Heide Orth Germany’s Heide Orth recently extended her record as the most successful female player in seniors tennis history with an incredible 42nd major (European or World Championship) title in Sofia. We caught up with her to ask her to reflect on her achievements… You have been a tennis champion since your days as a junior. What is it about tennis that has kept you playing all your life? Well, tennis is a fascinating sport that offers so many challenges: technically from the kick-serve to the sliced backhand, as well as physically and not least mentally. Personally, I like to compete and, of course, to win. You have played all over the world in all types of events. What has been your favourite place to play? This not easy to answer because over the years there have been so many changes regarding the attractiveness of the different tournaments. But I can say that in my younger years I did like to play the German Internationals at Hamburg. Nowadays I enjoy the friendly atmosphere, the wonderful environment and the good management of Klosters in Switzerland. Most recently I was very impressed by the excellent organization of the European Senior Championships in Sofia where I played for the first but surely not the last time.
Mrs. Orth in Sofia, where she won her 42nd major seniors’ title.
You were recently given an Outstanding Achievement Award by the ITF to add to your Lifetime Seniors Champion Award from Tennis Europe. What do these recognitions mean to you? Both awards have been and still are a great honour to me. Of course, it was an unforgettable experience to be invited to the ITF Champions Dinner in Paris this year and to be awarded by Mr. Ricci Bitti, the ITF President, in front of about 400 former and actual champions as well as important officials from all over the world for being the most successful female senior player in the 100 years´ history of ITF. What are your tennis goals for the future?
We were very happy to have you at the European Senior Championships. How important is this tournament to you?
The most important thing for me is to remain physically in good shape and to have fun on the court enjoying many good matches.
As I mentioned, this year I participated for the first time at the European Senior Championships. It has been a very positive experience for me and it was fun to win another European Championship.
Is tennis a big part of your family life? Do/did you encourage your children and grandchildren to play?
What has been the most satisfying tournament win of your life?
No, actually my family life has not much to do with tennis. My son is playing some tennis but not at a tournament level and my grandchildren are still too young to play tennis seriously.
Maybe I should say it has been the World Championships 2012 in Umag, where I won all my singles in the Individuals as well as in the Cup without losing a set.
If you could play against anyone from the history of the sport, who would you most like to play?
How ‘professional’ is life on the senior circuit? Do you train hard for the events you play at?
This a bit theoretical. However in my younger years Little Mo (Maureen Connolly) was my idol. As she was several years older than I unfortunately there has been never an opportunity to play against her.
In terms of professionalism, you cannot compare life on the senior circuit with the circuit of the real pros. My personal training is what may be the standard for seniors: on-court practicing and doing some physical exercises to stay fit.

Behind the Baseline... The International Tennis Federation has ruled that upcoming Davis Cup by BNP Paribas ties in Ukraine (vs. Belgium) and Israel (vs. Argentina) are being moved to neutral venues as a result of regional conflicts affecting the host nations. The BelgiumUkraine tie will be played at Tallinn’s Tere Tennis Centre (EST), while the Israel-Argentina tie will take place in Florida (USA). Next month’s inaugural ATP Negev Israel Open in Tel Aviv has also been cancelled. Lacoste has announced a two-year extension of its sponsorship of the Barclays ATP World Tour finals. Turkey will host an ATP World Tour event for the first time in 2015, when 250-series Istanbul Open is held from 27 April – 3 May. The singles winners at this year’s US Open will receive a record $3 million each in prize money, an increase of $400,000 on last year’s winner’s cheque and double what the winners were offered in 2008. The total amount of prize money on offer is $38.3 million, which represents an 11.7% rise on last year’s event. First round losers will receive $35,754. The USTA has announced the recipients of wild cards for the final Grand Slam of the season; Ryan Harrison, Tim Smyczek, Marcos Giron, Wayne Odesnik, Jared Donaldson, Noah Rubin, Taylor Townsend, Grace Miinn, Danielle Collins, Nicole Gibbs, Madison Brengle and Catherine Bellis. Reciprocal agreements with Tennis Australia and the French Tennis Federation mean that Bernard Tomic, Jarmila Gajdosova, Michael Llodra and Amandine Hesse will also feature in the main draw in New York. Stan Wawrinka has been elected to join the ATP Player Council. Coaching carousel: Ana Ivanovic has split with Nemanja Kontic and is now working with Dejan Petrovic. Andy Murray and Amelie Mauresmo have agreed to extend their working relationship after an initial trial period during the grass court season.
UNIQLO and the ITF have signed a three-year agreement that sees the clothing brand become the title sponsor of the ITF Wheelchair Tennis Tour and in international sponsor of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters. Maria Sharapova has topped Forbes’ list of the highest-earning female athletes for the 10th successive year, with an estimated $24.4 million banked between June 2013 and June 2014. Seven of the top ten athletes on the list are tennis players. Caroline Wozniacki has announced that she will compete in the New York Marathon in November to raise money for charity. Iveta Melzer (formerly Benesova) has announced her retirement. She reached a career high ranking of No.25 and won two singles and fourteen doubles titles. Judy Murray has confirmed that she will compete in the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing show this autumn. Rafael Nadal will not defend his US Open title next week due to a wrist injury, the second time in three years that the former world #1 has been forced to miss the event. After clinching the Emirates Airlines US Open Series title, Serena Williams will be gunning for a world record $4 million payday in New York. Roger Federer has qualified for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals for a record-breaking 13th consecutive year, joining Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic as the only players to have qualified so far. The first teams have been confirmed for next year’s Hopman Cup, with Great Britain making a return to the competition as Andy Murray teams with Heather Watson. Nick Kyrgios and Casey Dellacqua will represent host nation Australia. Xavier Malisse beat Fabrice Santoro to win the ATP Champions Tour Optima Open title in Knokke-Heist last weekend, his debut on the circuit. The event also saw two former women’s world #1s - Kim Clijsters and Monica Seles - in a mixed doubles exhibition with John McEnroe and Mansour Bahrami.
Belgium’s David Goffin recently established a 20match win streak to claim three ATP Challenger titles, followed by his first ever ATP World Tour title in Kitzbühel. Are you connected?
