Tennis Europe Junior Masters New champions have been crowned at the Tennis Europe Junior Masters after an intense final day of competition at the season-ending event for the elite players of the Tennis Europe Junior Tour. Held at the ASD Circolo de Tennis Rocco Polimeni in Reggio Calabria, Italy, the event provides one last chance for the leading players in each age group to compete against each other before many of them advance to new age groups.
With heavy rain forecast for the final day, the unusual decision was taken to play as many matches as possible simultaneously. Kristina Miletic of Serbia was the first player to secure victory, although her win in the Girls’ 16 & under event came in a manner that she would not have wanted as opponent Eva Marie Voracek was forced to retire after losing the first four games. The German was suffering from a stomach bug and tried her best but was understandably unable to offer much resistance.

Miletic was delighted though, and said it would take a couple of days to get used to being the new Junior Masters champion. She was particularly happy with her attitude during the weekend, commenting after that match that “Even though she retired, I felt I was playing very well. I almost had disasters in my other two matches; I even lost my first set here 0-6 on Friday, but getting out of those situations gave me a lot of confidence.” Nicola Kuhn was the next to join the winners’ circle, conceding just four games to Marko Miladinovic of Serbia in the Boys 14 & Under final on Court 1. Miladinovic had battled back from a set down in both of his previous matches, but Kuhn’s solid attacking style meant that the Serb had few chances to do so for a third match in a row. >>

Tennis Europe Junior Masters << The Spanish-based German called it a perfect end to a Tennis Europe Junior Tour season in which he won his first Category 1 title in Bolton, and went on to play on the winning Winter Cup by HEAD and Summer Cups teams, as well as helping to secure the World Junior Tennis title for Germany. “I’m especially pleased because I played better today than in the other matches,” he said. “I felt my level going up during the match, which was good. I wanted to show my best tennis today because it’s an important tournament and it’s important to end the year well, so I was very motivated.” Anastasia Potapova then added the Junior Masters title to the European Championships crown won in July to cap a remarkable season in which she has dominated the 14 & Under circuit. The Russian beat Adela Joldic of Bosnia & Herzegovina 6-4 7-6(3) to claim her sixth title of the year, and secure the season-ending #1 ranking. “This is the best year of my life,” she said afterwards. “This is the toughest tournament, and to win it after winning the Europeans and the World Junior Tennis title is just amazing. I am very proud of myself.” The last of the finals to be completed was also the most competitive, as Mate Valkusz of Hungary

fought back from a set down to outlast Bojan Jankulovski (MKD) and become the first player ever to defend a Junior Masters title. He admitted that the task had been more difficult than he anticipated, saying, “I hoped it would be easier this year. Last time I played against older guys and it was very hard to win, but this year I was the favourite and everyone played their best tennis against me.” “Today’s match was a little strange at times. I was 4-2 up in the first set and I thought I had won it, but then he played some amazing tennis; getting to every ball and hitting some incredible spins. Then in the second set I was losing 4-0 and I was almost giving up the set but something clicked and I managed to come back. I’m very happy. It was a big ambition for me to defend this title, so I’m really pleased.” Despite the loss, during which he was treated by the tournament doctor, Jankulovski will be cheered by the news that he will end the season as the #2ranked player in Tennis Europe’s Race ranking, the first Macedonian ever to end the season so highlyranked. In the play-off matches, Francesca Jones (GBR) beat Selma Cadar (ROU) and Alexey Zakharov beat Daniel Michalski (POL) to win the 14 & Under bronze medals. Csenge Furak overcame Elizaveta Volodko (RUS) to claim the Girls 16 & Under bronze, while Rrezart Cungu (MNE) fought back to beat Vladyslav Lobak (UKR) in three sets to >>

A torrential rainstorm finally arrived shortly after the conclusion of the last match, vindicating the referee´s decision to bring forward the start of play and bringing a premature end to the traditional on-court trophy ceremony. The players and organisers regrouped in the club house to complete the prizegiving, in which trophies and plates were given to the winners and all players received a gift from the host club. Selma Cadar was additionally announced as the recipient of the Fair Play Award by the tournament staff, in recognition of her positive on-court attitude and good sportsmanship, and the day ended with a chorus of ‘Happy Birthday’ for Vladyslav Lobak, who turned 16 on the day of the finals.

ITF/Tennis Europe Educational Forum While the tournament referee was preparing the Junior Masters draws, Europe’s leading 14 and 16 & Under players took a break from practice to take part in the annual ITF/Tennis Europe Educational Forum. The event is devised to provide players with practical knowledge and tips to assist them on their paths to becoming elite junior and professional players. The workshop was chaired by Tennis Europe’s Communications Manager Jonathan Jobson, who was joined by sports media and PR experts Faye Andrews and Sig Watkins of The Emilia Group. The forum examined the roles played by the International Tennis Federation and Tennis Europe in the governance and development of the sport and its tournaments at all levels. Players were also given some all-important guidance on the responsibility of all professional tennis athletes to abide by the sport’s strong anti-doping rules. This included advice on the process of post-match and out-of-competition testing and the procedures to expect should they be tested. The forum then examined the media responsibilities of today’s players, with tips for sensible and productive use of social media, as well as guidance on interview techniques and a study of the how top players harness the media to promote themselves, to service sponsors and to engage with fans. In an interactive session, players were given practical tasks and took part in a mock press conference with 14 & 3

Under player Mihaela Marculescu (ROU), who volunteered to play the role of a Grand Slam champion. Mr. Jobson commented, “Even at this early age, the players here at the Masters have proven that they have the tools to win on the tennis court. Much of their future success will also be dependent on other aspects of their professionalism, so it has been great to see them participating so enthusiastically to the forum, and putting into practice the tips imparted by my colleagues from the Emilia Group throughout the weekend.” The Forum drew to a close with a prize giveaway, after which players, coaches, officials and club staff gathered to celebrate the opening ceremony of the prestigious tournament.

Success for 14 & Under Touring Team This year’s ITF/Tennis Europe Grand Slam touring team for boys and girls aged 14 & Under completed another successful summer tour in Germany and Belgium during the months of July and August. The team consisted of eight players, three boys and five girls. The boys included Daniils Batmanovs (LAT), Nikoloz Davlianidze (GEO), and Anton Magnusson (ISL), while the girls were Adela Joldic (BIH), Daniela Vismane (LAT), Ana Shanidze (GEO), Marija Elenova (MKD) and Vitalia Stamat (MDA). Two coaches, Goran Shevchenko (MKD) and Egor Semichin (MDA), accompanied the players. The players and the coaches met in Duren, Germany on July 26th, where they had a short time to train and get to know each other before competing at the first tournament of this tour, which was held in the same location. The results of this first Category 1 tournament showed the promise of the team, but the results were not so satisfactory. Three players reached the singles third round, where Nikoloz Davlianidze lost to Seon Yong Han (KOR) 6-2 6-4, Adela Joldic to Dalila Said (EGY) 7-5 1-6 6-2 and Marija Elenova to Anastasia Kharitonova (RUS) 3-6 6-2 6-2 The tour continued in Hasselt, Belgium where the Team had a more successful event with some notable achievements. Having missed the first tournament with a knee injury, Daniela Vismane showed that she is one of the best players currently on the tour. In the singles tournament she posted a great 7-5 6-4 win over Argentina’s Maria Lourdes Carle, who had won three consecutive tournaments. Advancing to the semis, she faced another good player in Eliz Maloney, but the Brit was better that day and won 7-5 6-1. In the girls singles, two players reached the third round; Marija Elenova losing to Maloney 6-3 6-7(4) 6-1 and Vitalia Stamat losing to Watsachol Sawasdee (THA) 6-3 3-6 7-5. In the boys singles event, Daniils Batmanovs showed improvement by reaching the quarterfinals before losing to Aidan Mchugh 6-1 6-4. The Brit also went on to beat Nikoloz Davlianidze 6-2 6-0. In the doubles event, Joldic & Elenova reached the semi final but lost to Askarova (KGZ) & Park (KOR) 6-3 7-6(3), while Batmanovs & Egor Noskin (RUS) lost in the final against Colson (BEL) & McHugh (GBR) 3-6 6-4 10-5. On the third week of the tour the team returned to Germany were they participated at the Audi GW:plus Zentrum München Junior Open. This was with out any doubt a girls’ week. Ana Shanidze reached the semifinals before losing to the winner Sofya Lansere (RUS) 3-6 6-3 6-3, while the other semi was a fight between two team-mates. Adela Joldic put in a great performance against Daniela Vismane to win 6-4 3-6 6-3 to book her place in the final, but Lansere was too good on this occasion and won 6-4 6-4. Marija Elenova also 5

posted a good result by reaching the third round, losing to Natalia Boltinskaya 6-3 6-3. Daniils Batmanovs reached the quarterfinals of the boys’ singles, where he fell to Noskin (RUS) 7-5 6-3, while Davlianidze and Magnusson both reached the third round, losing to Niko Hornitschek (GER) 6-3 7-5 and Lukas Tomic (BIH) 6-4 6-2 respectively. In the doubles tournament, Ana Shanidze partnered Maya Chwalinska (POL) to reach the semis, where they lost to Sziedat/Voll (GER) 5-7 6-4 10-8. The tour finished with the prestigious Jugend Cup in Renningen/Rutesheim where the ITF/Tennis Europe players produced their best results of their short tour. The Latvians were the stars of the event and both reached the singles final. Daniela Vismane became the first player to win a singles title by beating Mihaela Lorena Marculescu (ROU) 6-2 6-3. Daniils Batmanovs narrowly failed to mae it 2/2, playing a great match against Egor Noskin but ultimately losing 7-5 6-3. Vitalia Stamat reached the quarterfinals where she lost to finalist Marculescu 6-4 7-5, while Nikoloz Davlianidze lost to Hornitschek 7-5 6-4 at the same stage. Adela Joldic reached the third round, where she fell to to Ann Cathrin Hummel 7-6(1) 6-4. Marija Elenova won the consolation tournament with a 6-4 61 victory against Santa Strombach (GER). The great week concluded with one more win as Elenova & Joldic took the girls doubles crown after a very long and dramatic match over the Germans Sziedat & Voll 4-6 7-5 12-10. After four very competitive tournaments, team coaches Goran Shevchenko and Egor Semichin concluded that it had been a very successful summer for this year’s team. Players competed in some of the best European events in this age division and showed a great attitude, competitive spirit and work ethic. The players’ evident desire to improve paid off, with their results and match wins increasing as the tour went on.

European Senior Club Championships The European Senior Club Championships were recently held at La Manga Club in Spain, where all of the competition’s age categories competed at the same venue for a third successive year. The two week tournament, held from 22-27 September and 29 September – 4 October, saw a total of 331 players in action, representing 64 teams. Week 1 saw the youngest two men’s and women’s age categories in action at the award-winning resort, while the more senior age groups took to the courts the following week. DCADA Hamburg of Germany won the inaugural edition of the Men’s 35s category, scoring a 4-1 victory over Virgin Active Gloucester of Great Britain. TCC Cortina of Italy avenged a 3-2 loss in last year’s final to beat rivals TC Fürstenzell and claim the Men’s 50s title. Led by Manfred Hundstorfer, the ITF #1-ranked player for the age group, Cortina scored an emphatic 4-1 win to secure a first European title. The Women’s 40s title saw a Spain vs. Netherlands final for a second consecutive year. In the absence of last year’s finalists (Chamartin of Madrid and TC Oranje), the Real Club de Tennis Barcelona-1899 ensured that the silverware would remain on Spanish soil with a 2-1 win over TC Cash. CSM d’Eaubonne scored a notable win in the Women’s 50s tournament, claiming a European title for a fourth successive year with a 3-0 victory over Campo Villa de Madrid. Three of their wins came in different age categories, with the previous titles coming in Women’s 40s (2011-2) and Women’s 45s (2013). A one-day break between the two weeks of play became two days following a torrential rain storm, but the super-senior players were soon back in action for the second half of the championships. Last year’s finalists TC Eschborn of Germany went on better, brushing past TC Root (NED) to claim the Men’s 55s title. Italy’s Nastro Verde emerged triumphant from a round-robin competition to take the Men’s 60s, while Grasshopper of Switzerland outlasted TC Siershahn of Germany 3-2 to win the Men’s 65s. CT Palermo continued their impressive run at the Championships by winning the Men’s 70s title for a third consecutive year. Led by the world #1 and arguably the greatest senior tennis player of all time, Peter Pokorny, the club took pole position over Centre Point of the Netherlands in the round-robin event. The win is an incredible eighth consecutive for

the club, with many of the same team members having contributed to the string of Men’s 65s titles in the five preceding years. The 45 Club of Great Britain recaptured the Women’s 60s crown, finishing ahead of compatriots West Hants in the round-robin to re-claim the title last won in 2011. Meanwhile, Lagardere Paris Racing extended their win streak to seven years, claiming a fourth consecutive Women’s 65s title to add to three 60s titles. Led by world #1 Gail Benedetti, the club scored a 2-1 win over Britain’s Bridgewater LTC in a repeat of last year’s final. In the Spotlight: Peter Pokorny Peter Pokorny was one of three senior world #1 players in action at the recent Club Championships. Arguably the most successful senior tennis player ever, his list of achievements pre-dates his entry on to the seniors circuit, having won professional events and represented Austria in the Davis Cup before eventually becoming the national team captain. As the seniors circuit has grown, so has his list of achievements; 14 times named as European Senior Player of the Year, he has accumulated 40 European singles titles and his enthusiasm for the game shows no sign of dimming, as evidenced by his leading CT Palermo to yet another European Club title. We took the opportunity to catch up with him to findout the secrets to his success... The European Club Championships is a slightly unusual event for the top players in action, as there are no ranking points on offer. What is the attraction of the event for you? Well, of course it’s a beautiful venue and the location near the sea is very welcome. The teams and players are always very happy to meet here one more time all together. The social aspect of the competition plays a big role here. What do you think of the surroundings here in La Manga? As I mentioned before, it is an amazing venue with a wide range of sports and leisure facilities. The only problem is that often the participants of the Championships struggle to find the time to use any of the facilities, apart from the tennis club! Earlier this year in Sofia you won your 40th European Seniors singles title, and you have a total of over 100 if we include doubles and mixed titles…how do you stay motivated after so many wins? I’ve been playing tennis my whole life and also I was involved professionally when I was younger. Tennis is my passion and I love it. You could say that it is a very well comparable with a normal job. If you perform well enough to do good business one day, you naturally want to have the same success the day after. What is the secret to your longevity? Apart from being the most successful player the ITF Seniors Circuit has ever known, you already had a long and distinguished tennis career…

Mr. Pokorny post-match at the recent European Senior Club Championships
First of all, I have been lucky not to have had too many serious injuries during my career. Furthermore, I think it’s fair to say that I play an ‘economic’ tennis style, which has been easy on my body, ensuring that I do not suffer too much. You first played in the Davis Cup in the 1960s, and must have witnessed many changes as the sport became professional. Are there any aspects that you miss from those pre-professional days? Everything in life develops and so does tennis, so the game had to change and will continue to evolve in the future. This is true in all sports, not just in tennis. Just about the only stable thing that has not changed during my time is the tennis court measurement! [Laughs] What would you say is your proudest achievement in the sport, and which of your many tournament wins was the most satisfying? Maybe my first win on the Austrian Davis Cup team. It was in 1970, when Austria beat Great Britain in Edinburgh. A while later, in the very early days of prize money professional tennis, I won the German International Indoor Championships in Bremen in 1973 against a Polish player ,Tadeusz Nowicki in five sets. That was very memorable. In 1986 I began with seniors’ tennis, and the rest you know! How has your fitness regime changed over the years? What do you do to keep in playing shape?
tenniseuropenews
In the Spotlight: Peter Pokorny << This is very easy to answer – one simply needs to keep on going, playing tennis, and every day if you can. What are your goals for the coming seasons? Well, once again I am starting to move towards the next age group, so I hope to be able to continue to be as successful as in the previous ones. Do you follow the younger generation of Austrian players? What do you think of the long term prospects for players like Dominic Thiem? From a technical and strokes point of view, Dominic has surely a lot of chances to go on to great things. However there are obviously a lot of other important factors in becoming a great player, so only time will tell.

Tennis Europe Junior Tour Rankings - 14 & Under Several players made significant strides in the rankings during the final weeks of the Tennis Europe Junior Tour season, none more so than Francesca Jones, who leaps from outside the Top 10 to #4 this month. The Barcelona-based Brit won her first 16 & Under event in Torello (adding the doubles for good measure), as well as reaching the semi-finals of the Category 1 event in El Prat.
