Tennis Europe launches Tennis CoachEd.com << Taking the employment theme a step further, Tennis Europe has teamed up with leading tennis recruitment platform OrangeCoach to present the ‘Jobs & Recruitment Zone’, offering access to the career platform which connects coaches and tennis employers such as managers, tennis parents, resorts, academies and clubs from all around the world. The ‘Conference Zone’ provides details of all further education and training opportunities for coaches held across Tennis Europe’s 49 member nations, whilst the final ‘Academy Zone’ (still under construction) comes in response to popular demand and will eventually be a complete one-stop directory for information on all European tennis academies and schools; an essential tool for players, parents and federations alike. Tennis Europe’s Chief Executive Officer Olli Mäenpää commented; “Tennis CoachEd was born of a desire to provide greater services to our coaches, who are key to the continued success of our sport. As the project has developed, we have incorporated many interesting new features for the tennis industry. I am sure that it will not only serve to further unite Europe’s coaching community, but will become a

vibrant hub for anyone searching for opportunities, information and advice.” CoachEd.com will be a companion site to the organisation’s existing TennisEurope.org, which had traffic of 7 million individual visitors and more than 60 million page impressions in 2014.

2015 European Tennis report to be published The third edition of the ‘European Tennis Report’ will be published by Tennis Europe later this month. The new-look report builds on the work of the previous editions to provide comprehensive statistical analysis from Tennis Europe’s 49 member nations. Features include an expanded reference section, federation contacts, participation and facility facts, three-year trends and comparisons of key categories including players (total, club members and licensed), clubs, courts and coaches. The report also tracks the progress of all international events held in Europe over the last eight years, from junior to professional, senior to wheelchair and beach tennis.

The report is available for pre-order now with special offers and tailor-made packages available. Please refer to the next page or contact Keith Jenkins (keithj@tenniseurope.org) for further information. Tennis Europe Chief Executive Officer Olli Mäenpää said; "We are very proud of this new edition of the Report, which offers a complete snapshot of the state of European tennis. The Report is essentially an encyclopaedia for tennis in Europe and is an indispensable tool for anyone involved in the industry, being the only available source of much of the data contained within. I would like to thank the many staff of our member nations that have helped us with the challenging task of collecting the data in recent months."

Key findings of the report include: - Overall European tennis participation rates steady - Slight declines in the numbers of tennis clubs and courts across 49 nations - Stable participation in the five markets that each claim over 10% of European players (France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Spain) - Fastest growing nations in terms of tennis participation are Armenia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovenia and Ukraine - Significant growth in the numbers of international tournaments and professionally-ranked European players

Germany leads race to European Tennis Trophy Germany is in pole position to defend the European Tennis Trophy for overall performance as the season reaches its halfway point. There is fierce competition for the award this year, with several nations still in contention to claim the title, which is given to recognise the performances of players and teams representing national tennis federations across four disciplines of the sport throughout the season. Germany won the Trophy last year for the first since 1995, and is looking to defend the title for overall performance for the first time since 1993. The nation once again dominates the senior tennis category, which accounts for the lion’s share of its points earned so far. Currently fourth in professional and fifth in junior tennis, the 2014 champion stands just 150 points ahead of Russia, but with the majority of professional and junior tennis points still to be added, the overall top spot is likely to be hotly contested during the closing stages of the season. Russia’s current #2 spot is largely thanks to performances in professional tennis – the national team will contest the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas final against Czech Republic in November – and junior tennis, where the nation’s teams have won three of the six international team events to have been contested on the Tennis Europe Junior Tour so far in 2015. 2012’s overall champion Czech Republic is also performing strongly, leading the professional tennis category that it is has won for the last three seasons, and currently trails France in fourth place by just 40 points.

Germany’s winning 16 & Under boys’ Winter Cups by HEAD team has contributed to their nation being in pole position as the season reaches its half way point.

For the first time in the 15-year history of wheelchair tennis’ inclusion to the trophy, the dominance of the Netherlands is threatened. Great Britain’s success at the World Team Cup propels them to the top spot with an equal number of points as the 14-time defending champion, and to fifth place overall. The first Trophy Race update of 2015 includes all points earned by nations during the first six months of the year. Rankings that use a rollover 52-week system are not counted in the point totals at this stage. The final point standings will be announced during the first week of the 2015 season, and the awards presented to national federations at the 2016 Tennis Europe Annual General Meeting. Full results from last year can be found here, while the Top 5 in each category so far in 2015 are shown in the table below:

Spain and Russia win 14 & Under Summer Cups titles << The Croatian player won their first meeting indoors in Bolton, but Alvarez Varona gained a quick revenge at the Winter Cups three weeks later. History repeated itself when the pair met for a second time in a European team event, with the Spaniard scoring a 6-4 7-5 win to put the hosts ahead. Carlos Gimeno Valero then became the hero of the Spanish team, conceding just five games in the second match against Stipan Madzar to secure the Cup and give Spain a fourth Copa del Sol title overall. A dead doubles rubber was also played, and saw Alvarez Varona joined by Pedro Vives Marcos to beat Ajdukovic & Madzar to complete a 3-0 sweep with a 6-2 6-2 win. The Spanish team went undefeated in the final rounds, adding 3/0 wins over Switzerland and France to victories over Poland, Czech Republic and Hungary in the qualifying competition. At the girls’ Europa Cup finals in Loano, Russia won a record ninth title thanks to a 2/0 win over 2013 champions the Czech Republic. Both singles matches were tight affairs, with the Russians weathering second set fightbacks to score three-set victories. Vlada Koval did well to extend her Summer Cups win/loss record to 5/1 with a 6-4 2-6 6-4 win over Ivana Sebestova in the first match before European #2 Taisya Pachkaleva took on #12 Vanesa Nikolovova, matching the result of her team-mate with a 7-6(1) 4-6 6-0 win. Russia had been unseeded in the final rounds after going down to surprise loss in their last qualifying match against Italy, who fell to the Czech Republic in Saturday’s semi-finals.

Both the boys’ and girls’ events saw a record 35 nations entered, with special pre-qualifying events held in order to cope with demand. The 14 & Under Summer Cups also serve as the European qualifying event for the ITF World Junior Tennis competition, the finals of which will be held in Prostejov (CZE) in early August. European Senior Championships in Sofia The fourth edition of the European Seniors Championships took place from 6-11 July in Sofia, where the tournament was hosted by the Bulgarian Tennis Federation and once again played at two venues; the National Tennis Centre and the nearby Dema Club. Around 200 players took part in the tournament, including four of the ITF Senior Circuit’s current world #1s and many other Top Ten players. A plethora of defending champions managed to retain their titles, with a total of seven repeat winners claiming the highest spot on the podium. World #3 Daniel Dolbea of Germany beat France’s David Goncalves for the loss of just four games to defend his Men’s 35s title. The pair also teamed up to win the doubles event. The Women’s 35s saw Alina Camelia Striou win a first European title, as she finished ahead of Romanian compatriot Daniela Shoppmeyer in the round-robin event. There was further success for Germany in the Men’s 40s event as world #1 Gerhard Fahlke overcame Britain’s Sebastian Jackson in two hard-fought sets 7-5 7-5 to defend his title. Last year’s women’s champion in this category, Ana Salas Lozano of Spain, then followed suit by topping her round-robin group. Alexander Windisch made it three out of three for Germany in the Men’s 45s, blasting past home hope Blagovest Petrov (BUL) to claim his third ITF Senior Circuit title of the season. In a battle between two of the world’s top three players, Jurate Hardy of Lithuania claimed a first Sofia title with a 6-1 6-2 win over Lucie Schwab (AUT). The Men’s 50s event saw Manfred Hundsdorfer of Austria defend his title with a three set win over Germany’s Christian Greuter, while there was further success for Austria in the Men’s 55s, where Karl Pansy went one better than his 2014 runner-up spot to claim the title, reversing last year’s loss to Pierre Godfroid (BEL) in a nail-biting 4-6 6-1 7-6(7) win that was a highlight of the tournament. Also a runner-up last year, Gundula Wieland of Germany went on to claim the Women’s 55s title, while Nora Blom of the Netherlands breezed past Radomila Martinicova (CZE) for the 60s title. Spain’s Javier Lazcano Hernandez retained his Men’s 60s championship with a 7-6(3) 6-1 victory over second seed Harald Hellmonseder (AUT). The Men’s 65s event saw two defending champions

beaten in their final matches. France’s Bruno Renoult ended the reign of Gerd Dahmen (GER) 6-4 6-1, while the women’s competition saw Annemarie Haeringer oust German compatriot Heidemarie Oehlsen 6-3 64. Three higher men’s categories were played; each of which saw the eventual champions adding to a long list of senior circuit achievements. Germany’s Peter Adrigan claimed the Men’s 70s title, conceding just three games to Levente Bakonyi of Hungary. Peter Pokorny of Austria extended his lead as the player with most European titles by winning the Men’s 75s competition on his debut in the age group, while Henri Crutchet of France successfully retained his Men’s 80s title. The European Championships is a Grade B1 event on the ITF Seniors Circuit and offers 210 ranking points to the winners, making the event the biggest in Europe in terms of points available. Wimbledon Championships 2015 Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams underlined their dominance once again by adding to their increasingly impressive Grand Slam tallies at Wimbledon 2015. Djokovic put the heartbreak of another Paris final defeat firmly behind him by stamping his authority over Roger Federer to claim a third Wimbledon title. Federer had been in imperious form throughout the event, losing his serve just once on route to the final and placing himself in prime position to add to his record 17 Grand Slam titles. But it would turn out to be Djokovic that gave a masterclass in clutch serving, saving six of seven break points during the match, two of which came on set points to Federer in the opening set, a disappointment from which the Swiss was unable to recover in time to salvage the subsequent tie break. The second set was equally tense, and produced tennis of equally astounding quality. The world #1 held a set point for a two-set lead but Federer raised his level, producing some outstanding play to force another tie break. History looked set to repeat itself as the Serb established a 6-3 lead, but with the crowd behind him the seven-time champion eventually levelled the match at a set apiece after an unforgettable 22-point breaker. As so often in his career, Djokovic wrested control of the match after a moment of adversity, breaking early in the third and fourth sets to seize the initiative from his opponent. The shortest of rain delays was not enough to interrupt his rhythm or concentration, and on the return it was Federer who looked the less fresh of the two as the world #1 served out to defend his title. One day earlier, Serena Williams had etched her name once more into the record books with a superlative Wimbledon win that served to further underline her claim to be the greatest female player of all time. The 33-year old withstood a spirited challenge from opponent Garbiñe Muguruza to claim her third Grand Slam title of 2015, and sixth Wimbledon title overall. Battling nerves throughout the fortnight as the prospect of becoming the first player since 1988 to achieve a calendar year Grand Slam draws ever closer, the world #1 had a tough road to the final. In the third round she stood two points from defeat against Britain’s Heather Watson and also had to come from a set down against Victoria Azarenka in the quarterfinals, though she had less trouble in matches against sister Venus and fourth seed Maria Sharapova. Playing in her first Grand Slam final, Muguruza’s best moments came at the start and end of the match, breaking her opponent and serving out for a 2-0 lead 8

Issue 125 > July 2015

in the first set, and recovering from a 1-5 deficit to break serve twice. But Serena was ultimately in control, capitalising on an error-filled final service game from the 20th seed to complete a 6-4 6-4 win. The victory will keep the pressure on Williams as she continues to chase history, though not in terms of ranking, with the American now holding more than twice as many points as second-ranked Sharapova. For her part, Muguruza became the first Spanish player to reach the Wimbledon final since Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario in 1996, and as a result joins her doubles partner Carla Suarez to ensure two Spaniards in the WTA Top Ten for the first time in almost as long. Doubles Martina Hingis proved to be the star of the doubles events, winning both of her events to secure her seventeeth and eighteenth Grand Slam titles, and the third of this remarkable third phase of her career. Hingis teamed with her regular Indian partners for both victories, helping world #1 Sania Mirza to claim a first Grand Slam title in the women’s event (pictured overleaf), and following up on her Australian Open mixed doubles victory last January with Leander Paes. The two finals contrasted in style, with a mixed doubles rout of Timea Babos (HUN) & Alexander Peya (AUT) lasting just 40 minutes, while the previous day’s battle with Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina was one of the longest doubles finals on record, with the top seeds eventually triumphing 5-7 7-6(4) 7-5 after two and half hours of play. The men’s title went to Jean-Julien Rojer (NED) & Horia Tecau (ROU), who ended the host nation’s hopes of a home win with a straight sets win over Jamie Murray and his Australian partner John Peers. The win was fourth time lucky for Tecau, who had fallen at the final hurdle on three previous occasions in SW19.

Wimbledon Championships 2015 Juniors Unseeded American Reilly Opelka had a breakthrough week in the boys’ singles, stringing together a number of impressive performances on his way to a first Junior Slam title. After surviving the qualifying competition and saving a match point during a 13-11 final set in his first round match against Alex De Minaur (AUT), he went on to beat three seeds, including #1 Taylor Fritz in the semis and former European 14 & Under Champion Mikael Ymer of Sweden in the final. Opelka almost had the perfect tournament, but just failed in his quest to claim two trophies when he fell in the doubles final to Nam Hoang Ly of Vietnam and Sumit Nagal of India alongside Japan’s Akia Dantillan. Russian players dominated the girls’ singles event, where Sofya Zhuk eventually beat Anna Blinkova in the first all-Russian final since 2002, when Vera Dushevina outlasted Maria Sharapova in three sets. Zhuk had earlier beaten the Tennis Europe Junior Tour’s 14 & Under #1 Anastasia Potapova, who reached the quarterfinals despite being the youngest player in the draw. The doubles event went to last year’s European 16 & Under Champions Dalma Galfi & Fanni Stollar, who became the first Hungarian team to win the title (both Timea Babos and Agnes Szavay are previous winners, having teamed up with partners from other nations). With just one Grand Slam event left to play this season, a number of intriguing questions are raised. Can Andy Murray ride his recent improved performances to break the Djokovic/Federer duopoly and reclaim the New York title? Will Rafa Nadal recover from the loss of form that has seen him on the cusp of leaving the Top 10 this season, and can Marin Cilic retain the title he won so spectacularly last year? And can Serena Williams withstand the pressure in New York to turn her ‘Serena Slam’ into a calendar-year Grand Slam, emulating Steffi Graf - the last player to do so, and drawing level with the German as the most successful player of all time? The clock is ticking...

Tennis Europe Junior Tour Rankings - 14 & Under There are lots of changes in the 14 & Under rankings this month with several Category 1 events in recent weeks offering big points to the best performers. Amongst those have been Ukraine’s Anna Laguza, winner of the BNP Paribas Cup in Paris, and Helene Pellicano, who becomes the highestever ranked Maltese player on the Tennis Europe Junior Tour. Pellicano has been in fine form throughout the season, racking up a total of five singles tournament

wins so far, including the Category 1 event in Messina and a singles/doubles sweep at her debut 16 & Under tournament in Crema. Duje Ajdukovic is the highest new entry to the boys’ Top 10 following a win in Zagreb and a spot on Croatia’s second-placed Copa del Sol team. All players mentioned are also in the Top 10 of the Race to Masters rankings, which determine the field for the season-ending Tennis Europe Junior Masters in Reggio Calabria, Italy. Rankings as of July 14th, 2015.
