Czech Republic sweeps 12 & Under Winter Cups by HEAD titles There was a double celebration for the Czech Republic after the country became just the second nation ever to sweep both the boys’ and girls’ titles at the 12 & Under Tennis Europe Winter Cups by HEAD recently. Playing in Sunderland (GBR), the girls’ team fought their way to victory past the champions of three of the last four editions, easing to 2/1 wins over Russia and Ukraine in their opening matches by winning both singles rubbers each time. Romania emerged as finalists from the other side of the draw, putting in dominant performances to beat Turkey and France 3/0. The opening match of the final would turn out to be key, as Linda Noskova (CZE) recovered from the loss of the first set (5-7) to eventually overcome Alexandria Petric 6-2 6-4 in almost two and a half hours of play. Linda Fruhvirtova then managed to seal victory for the Czechs, accelerating away after a close first set to beat Vanessa Popa Teiusanu 6-4 6-1. There was one more match to go however before the Czech

girls could properly celebrate winning the title for a second time, and Agata Cern joined Fruhvirtova to complete the 3/0 sweep over Petric and Michelle Wetherall in the doubles. Over in Veska, the Czech boys’ team had the benefit of home turf for their final rounds, and it showed in a comfortable 3/0 win over Turkey in their opening quarterfinal match. The semi-final was a nail bitingly close battle for the home fans though. 1-1 after the singles matches, Matthew Donald and Oldrich Vejsicky battled for almost two hours to overcome Cesar Bouchelaghem & Pierre Ngijol Carre 5-7 7-5 11-9 to finally confirm their spot in the final. Sunday’s final was another tough scrap after Russia’s Nikita Bochkarev took the opening singles tie in a two-hour, three set match against Vejsicky. Matthew Donald wasted no time in levelling the score though, conceding just three games to Mikhail Gorokhov to take the match to a deciding doubles rubber. Here Gorokhov was joined by the fresh legs of Konstantin Zhzhenov, but the experienced home pair once again asserted their authority – and maintained their unbeaten streak in doubles in the competition – to secure the match, and the title, in just under an hour of play.

Italy and Ukraine claim 14 & Under Winter Cups by HEAD titles Italy's boys and Ukraine's girls are celebrating impressive victories at the 2016 Tennis Europe Winter Cups by HEAD. The Italian boys won their event in the Romanian capital, Bucharest, while the girls had beaten the Czech locals in Rakovnik on their way to claiming the title. Having come through 2-1 in their earlier matches against Russia and France, the Italians were thoroughly convincing in the final as they defeated the Czech Republic 3-0. ‘The Lorenzos’ sealed the deal for Italy putting the team 2-0 ahead before the doubles. Lorenzo Musetti dispatched Jaroslav Smedek 6-0 6-1 in 58 minutes, while Lorenzo Rottoli recovered from a first set tie-break loss to come back and take the next two sets 6-2 6-3 against European #4 Dalibor Svrcina. Musetti and Smedek then returned to the court to team up with Fausto Tabacco and Kristian Kubik respectively. After just over an hour, the Italians had made a clean sweep of the final with a 6-1 7-5 victory.

As the number one seeds and without having lost a single match along the way, the Ukrainian girls went into the final brimming with confidence. However, the team had to withstand some tough resistance from Slovakia, with the two nations level at 1-1 after two very hotly contested three-set singles matches. Daria Snigur gave Ukraine an early 1-0 lead with a 64 2-6 6-2 win over Nina Stankovska. A shock then came as Romana Cisovska toppled recent 'Les Petits As' champion Marta Kostyuk 6-2 2-6 7-5, setting up a live doubles rubber to decide the winner. The Slovakian players teamed up to face Kostyuk and Dasha Lopatetskaya, but Kostyuk – the Tennis Europe Junior Tour’s current #1 player - would not go down twice in one day. The Ukrainians held firm for a relatively tight 7-5 6-3 victory. Both squads can be extremely proud of their victories. The win was just Italy’s second title in this category, while Ukraine’s girls had never previously won the 14 & Under title. Having also claimed the 12 & Under event last year, the signs are good that the new crop of girls from this nation will continue to fulfil their promise.

Russia dominates the 16 & Under Winter Cups by HEAD Russian teams have once again dominated at the Tennis Europe Winter Cups by HEAD, repeating their 2003 feat of sweeping both the boys’ and girls’ 16 & Under titles in the same year. For a seventh successive year, Ronchin in France was the venue for the boy’s final rounds, where the Russian boys team seemed to get better and better with each tie. Having lost the opening rubber of their match against Bulgaria and been forced to recover for a 2-1 win, the team did not look back for the rest of the weekend. They next overcame Belgium in the semi-finals for the loss of just one set, but were pushed hard by their Dutch opponents in the final. The first rubber could easily have gone the way of the Netherlands as Russia’s Egor Noskin lost the first set to Amadatus Admiraal but then managed to snatch the second set in a tie-break. It all came down to one break of serve in the end, and that was all that Noskin needed to claim the final set 6-4. In the second singles match, Timofey Skatov made light work of Lodewijk Weststrate to secure the title with a straightforward 6-2 6-2 win.

The doubles rubber was hotly contested. Noskin returned to the court to team with Alexey Zakharov for Russia while Weststrate paired with Julian Prins for the Netherlands. It came down to the wire, and eventually the match went the way of the Russians as they came through with a 6-2 4-6 10-7 win. In the Czech town of Veska, the Russian girls can tell a similar story. After easily taking care of the Ukraine in the first round, the Russians had a 1-0 deficit against Switzerland in the semi-finals. They eventually turned things around with two straight set wins to advance to the final against the local girls. Russia was determined to start off well this time around, as hot favourite and long-time Tennis Europe Junior Tour 14 & under #1 Anastasia Potapova won her match 6-3 7-6 against Karolina Berankova. The local crowd were given some hope when Lucie Kankova pulled off a nerve-wracking upset win over Olesya Pervushina 7-6 2-6 7-6 in the other singles match. After some well-earned rest, the same four players returned to the court for the deciding doubles rubber. However, the match turned out to be anticlimax for the home fans, as Czech hopes were dashed with a 6-3 6-0 Russian thrashing. Thus, from being four-time runners up from 20112014, Russia’s girls have now won the event two years in a row. This mirrors their previous period of dominance from 1997-2007, when they appeared in 9 out of 11 finals, winning seven. The boys’ success has been somewhat more intermittent, but impressive nonetheless. In the new millennium, they can add the 2016 title to those won in 2003 and 2013, as well as their 2006 Runners-up trophy.

European Senior Open in Seefeld The European Senior Open in Seefeld once again served as a high-performance curtain-raiser to the European senior tennis circuit as the Austrian ski resort welcomed 574 players for one of the world’s biggest international tennis events. With 22 different age categories in action across men’s and women’s events, the tournament is split between two weeks, with the super seniors taking centre stage during the first of those. Top seeded German Alfred Boeckl enjoyed a successful defence of his Men’s 65 title, repeating last year’s win over the title’s previous holder Peter Marklstofer in the final. Hendrik Andren of Sweden added his name to the Men’s 70 honour roll, beating three seeds on his way to the final match with Vladimir Lacina (CZE). Peter Pokorny continues to be one of the most successful ITF Senior Circuit players of all time, adding yet another European title to his record-breaking tally of 42, and conceding just eight games in five matches on route to the championship, including two in his final round win over Erhard Windisch (GER). The Men’s 80 event saw an all-German final as Gunther Kindermann beat Manfred Kammin, while another German, Hans Mathiak beat defending champion Angelo Sala (ITA) in the semi-finals before going on to claim the 85 title when rival Hermann Thesing was forced to withdraw from the final. On the women’s side, Heide Froeysok caused the biggest upset, ending top seed Heide Eisterlehner’s quest for a 15th Seefeld singles title with a 6-0 6-3 win in their all-German Women’s 65 semi-final. Froeysok then went on to beat another compatriot, Reinhilde Adams, in a tough three-set final. The Women’s 70 event went to a familiar name as record-breaking German Heide Orth extended her tally to 43 major (European or World) titles after a hard-fought 7-6(5) 6-3 upset of top seed Elie Krocke (NED) in the final. There was a home victory in the Women’s 75 as Sofia Garaguly put in a dominant performance, conceding just six games in three matches – including a 6-1 6-1 win over defending champion Elisabeth van Boemmel in the semis – on her way to the final. She was pushed harder in her final match, but accelerated away after a 12-game first set to claim a 7-5 6-1 victory over Inger Delamare (FRA). Brigitte Jung made it three out of four super senior singles titles for Germany, defending her 2015 crown

to retain the Women’s 80 championship with a 6-3 6-0 win over Annemarie Theyson. The second week saw the younger age groups in action, producing a varied list of winners with players from eight different nations winning titles. Martine Stauder was the first of those, scoring a rare European title for Luxembourg by going unbeaten in the round robin Women’s 35 event. For a second consecutive year, Sylva Himper of the Czech Republic upset top seed Ana Salas Lozano (ESP) on her way to the Women’s 40 title, this time surviving a first set tie break before accelerating away for a 7-6(2) 6-0 win over the world #1 in the final. Annemiek Wissink of the Netherlands edged through a marathon battle to claim the Women’s 45 title, eventually triumphing 7-6(2) 6-7(4) 6-3 over top seed Gabi Kirchner of Germany. In the Women’s 50 event, Olga Shaposhnikova of Germany cleanly defended her title, easing to a 6-1 6-1 win over second seed Liselot Prechtel (NED) in the final.

European Senior Open in Seefeld Having suffered disappointment last year when falling at the final hurdle in her attempt to win five consecutive Women’s 50 titles, Austria’s Ingrid Resch got back on track, claiming the 55 title at her first attempt, and losing just two games in the process. Meanwhile, last year’s 55 champion also moved up a category successfully as Renata Tomanova (GER) claimed the Over 60 crown for the first time. On the men’s side, Luca Serena of Italy defended his Over 35 title with a 6-3 6-2 win over Daniel Dolbea (GER). Matthias Mueller was a happy man, finally winning the Men’s 40 title after a run of three successive final losses in previous years. The German beat unseeded Finn Heikki Raevaara in the final. The Men’s 45 saw Sweden’s Jorgen Aberg re-claim the title. The 2014 champion benefitted from walkovers in two of his matches, including the final
against Christoph Back (GER), his victor in last year’s final. Home player Gerald Kaiser won the hotly contested Men’s 50 event, ending the run of Christoph Parringer (GER) in the final after the 15th seed had upset the tournament’s #1, 4 and 7 seeds in his previous matches. Wim Groeneveld of the Netherlands ended Pierre Godfroid’s run as champion of the Men’s 55 event, beating the Belgian top seed 6-3 6-3 in the final. Alan Rasmussen bolstered his increasingly impressive European record in the Men’s 60 tournament, overcoming a second set fightback from Radovan Cizek (CZE) to emerge triumphant 6-0 7-6(8). Special Olympics European Tennis Day Special Olympics celebrated its third annual European Tennis day on 8th March with a number of special events held across the region. In Hungary, more than 60 athletes took part in a star-studded event involving competitions for three different tennis ability levels. A highlight of the day was a unified doubles match in which some of the athletes took part alongside Hungarian celebrities. The day also featured a two-hour practical coaching seminar for teachers of players with special needs, held at Balázs Brothers professional tennis school. Attila Richter, the Hungarian Tennis Association General Secretary, was in attendance, alongside a number of high-profile celebrities and professional sports stars that came along to show their support, including former Hungarian professional tennis players Ágnes Szávay and Zsófia Gubacsi, world champion Kayaker Gábor Kucsera and professional ice hockey player Levente Szuper. A few days later, on 13th March, Special Olympics Ukraine held its own celebrations, hosting a masterclass for 38 athletes with intellectual disabilities. The event represented a first step towards the development of tennis as a Special Olympics sport in Ukraine. Supported by the Ukrainian Tennis Federation, the master-class involved some of Ukraine’s top tennis players. Each of the participants enjoyed the opportunity to play tennis and get professional advice from their famous coaches. The

18 & Under Touring Team This year’s European 18 & Under team recently completed a six-week tour competing in high-level ITF Junior tournaments in North Africa and Europe. The team was comprised of three boys - Nikita Mashtakov (UKR), Kaya Gore (TUR) and Menelaos Efstathiou (CYP), one girl, Daniela Vismane (LAT), and their coach Goran Shevchenko of Macedonia. First stop was the Grade 2 Hammamet ITF Juniors Tournament in Tunisia, which was also the venue for a four-day training camp held prior to the competition. In the boy’s singles event Nikita Mashtakov showed a great level in reaching the final where he lost to Javier Barranco Cosano (ESP) 6-2 6-1. Kaya Gore reached the quarters, where he fell to teammate Mashtakov 6-4 5-7 6-2. In the girl’s singles event, Daniela Vismane reached the semi-final where after a great fight against Sada Nahimana (BDI) she eventually lost 4-6 7-6(0) 7-5. The whole team showed great results in the doubles tournament, especially Gore, who teamed up with Bojan Jankulovski (MKD) to claim the title with a 7-6(2) 36 [10-7] win over Italians Alessandro Coppini & Luca Narcisi. The Grade 2 Tunisia ITF Juniors Tournament was the next event on the schedule. Kaya Gore again reached the singles quarterfinals, losing to Carlos Divar (ESP) 6-3 6-3, while Mashtakov reached the 3rd round after beating team-mate Efstathiou before also falling to Divar in straight sets. Daniela Vismane continued her good form to reach a second consecutive semi-final, where she lost to the eventual champion Julia Rosenqvist 6-1 6-4. In doubles Gore & Jankulovski once again posted the best result, reaching the semi-finals. For the third and fourth week team moved to Moldova for Trofeul D. Sturdza and Lithuania for Siauliai Open 2016 both Grade 2 events where the players were faced with the challenge of adjusting to very different conditions, changing from outdoor to indoor courts, but still made some remarkable results. At the Trofeul D. Sturdza singles event Mashtakov lost in the 2nd round to Nikolay Vylegzhanin (RUS) 6-4 6-7(6) 6-4. The team’s best performances here came in doubles, as Daniela Vismane and partner Paulina Bakaite (LTU) reached the semi-finals while Kaya Gore and Nikita Mashtakov reached the quarters losing to Aliaksandr Liaonenka (BLR) and Vladyslav Lobak (UKR) 7-6(6) 1-6 [12-10]. Goran Shevchenko, the team coach, commented: “This was a great opportunity for the players to compete in very strong events and try to improve their game and gain experience for the forthcoming

Tennis Europe Junior Tour Rankings - Overall Tennis Europe’s junior ranking system is devised to give a unified overall list that shows the relative strengths of all players, regardless of where they achieved their results or picked up points. A player’s overall total includes points from Tennis Europe Junior Tour 16 and 14 & Under events, plus points earned by players in these age categories who participate in ITF Junior Circuit and professional tournaments, all of which are weighted accor-
ding to their relative strengths. The 14 & Under ranking is still available separately (see next page), as well as being integrated to these overall rankings. For more information on the rankings system, check out the Tennis Europe Junior Tour Rules and Regulations at www.TennisEurope.org. The ‘Race to the Masters’ rankings are also available separately, and include points earned exclusively at Tennis Europe Junior Tour events. Rankings below are as of March 29th 2016.

Tennis Europe Junior Tour Rankings - 14 & Under There are some big changes in the rankings lists since our last issue, with several big events being held on the Tennis Europe junior Tour in recent weeks. The 14 & Under girls’ rankings are led by Ukraine’s Winter Cups winners Daria Dnigur and Marta Kostyuk, who have exchanged the top spot in recent weeks and look set to do so throughout the season. China’s Qinwen Zheng has also made a big move, wnning back-to-back Category 1 events in Maia and Sainte Genevieve des Bois.
The new boys’ #1, Harold Mayot of France, has also been in great form, winning singles and doubles at Category 1 Bolton, and establishing a 12-1 win/loss record so far this year. He’s closely followed by Czech Dalibor Svrcina, who already has two singles titles under his belt. Full ranking lists www.TennisEurope.org.
