Tennis Europe & Mouratoglou Tennis Academy sign partnership << after celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2015, and recently hosted the first of two events scheduled at the Mouratoglou facility in 2016, the 12 & Under Mouratoglou Cup (a 16 & Under event will also be held in September). Several of the Tennis Europe Junior Tour’s current top players, including Croatian 14 & Under #6 Borna Devald, Noa Kznaric and 2015 ‘Les Petits As’ winner Chun Hsin Tseng already train at the Mouratoglou Academy, while Junior Tour alumni including Novak Djokovic, David Goffin, Jeremy Chardy and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova are regular visitors. The agreement also raises the possibility for the Academy to provide expertise and resources to assist with Tennis Europe’s coaching activities, including future European Coaches Conferences, training camps and other events. Tennis Europe Chief Executive Officer Olli Mäenpää commented, “The name Mouratoglou has been synonymous with tennis of the highest performance in recent years and we are delighted that we will be able to bring the benefits of the expertise, knowledge and facilities of the Mouratoglou Academy to our member national federations, coaches and to the participants of the Tennis Europe Junior Tour.”

S2ASport project partner meeting in Copenhagen On 23rd and 24th of May 2016, the S2ASport project (led by EOSE and funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Commission)* organised its second full partner meeting in Copenhagen gathering 15 representatives of the 12 official partners, with Tennis Europe amongst those in attendance. The event, hosted by the International Sport and Culture Association (ISCA), gave the opportunity to the whole partnership to discuss the progress made since the kick-off event in November 2015 and to move forward the implementation of this ambitious EU funded project focusing on the area of Sport Administration that will run until February 2018. The partnership is using and following the Lifelong Learning Strategy for sport and active leisure, also known as the 7 Step Model, to define and specify the precise knowledge and skills sport administrators need to perform effectively within sport organisations and to produce an adapted training programme handbook that will be piloted in the second part of the project. The discussion in Copenhagen focused on the first 3 steps of the overall model and more particularly on the draft versions of the Research Report (Step 1), the Occupational Map (Step 2) and the Occupational Descriptor (Step 3), the three of them forging the basis to provide a concise overview of the targeting area of sport administration as well as the context and background for development of occupational standards and education content. In particular, the main findings of the online European consultation survey carried out in April 2016 and which gathered a total of 347 answers
from the sector were presented. Overall it is expected that the draft documents will now be amended and revised by each package leader so that they could be signed off by the end of June 2016 following a series of consultations. On day 2, participants got some energisers through MOVE week activities in the street of Copenhagen as well as in the ISCA office. The meeting concluded with each partner having action points to be completed ahead of the next full partner meeting that will be hosted by the Lithuanian partner in Vilnius on 24/25 of October 2016. *EOSE is the leader of this EU funded project entitled S2A Sport: “From Strategy to Action: Supporting the professionalisation of sport organisations through the definition of work-based competencies and the development of fit-for-purpose training for Sport Administrators”. Don’t get stuck on the same workout... As you probably already know, conditioning is an essential part of tennis. Running is one of the most efficient ways to build up stamina and prepare you for the decisive moments of the season’s most important match. Your heart rate is one of the best indicators of how hard your body is working during a workout. And unlike a purely subjective evaluation of the workout intensity, your heart rate is a trackable number, just like frequency and duration. Train at different intensities and reap the benefits later. If you want to learn more about training with heart rate, check out Polar's article about heart rate zones.

European Senior Championships in Antalya The fifth edition of the European Seniors Championships took place recently at the Ali Bey Resort Sorgun in Antalya, Turkey, where the tournament was hosted by the Turkish Tennis Federation and organised by Patricio Travel. Almost 200 players took part in the tournament, including five of the ITF Senior Circuit’s current world #1s and many other Top Ten players. Many of the defending champions managed to retain their titles, with a total of nine repeat winners returning to stand at the highest spot on the podium. The men’s events saw particularly strong performances from the Senior Tour’s most established players, with an incredible eight of ten titles being successfully defended by their reigning champions from 2015. Of the new winners, Germany’s Marc Brill claimed the Men’s 35 title on his debut in the competition, dominating his round robin group with four wins. A more familiar name is Men’s 60 champion Harald Hellmonseder, who never dropped a set in claiming his first European Senior Championships win, having fallen at the final hurdle in 2013 and 2015. The repeat winners were plentisome; Men’s 40 top seed Gerhard Fahlke won his third title in a row with a 6-1 6-2 win over Benoit Coppens of Belgium. Germany compatriot and world #2 Alexander Windisch held on to his Men’s 45 title with a 6-2 6-2 victory over Macedonian wild card Zoran Shevchenko. A pair of Austrian world #1s won the next categories, as Manfred Hundstorfer repeated the result of last year’s final to beat world #2 Christian Greuter (GER) 6-0 75 for the Men’s 50 and Karl Pansy beat second seed Florian Ebner (GER) 6-0 7-5 for the Men’s 55 title. Familiar names also reigned in the super-seniors categories: France’s Bruno Renoult held onto his title despite stiff opposition from Germany’s Peter Marklsdorfer, who extended the world #1 to a third set before capitulating. Peter Adrigan also defended his Men’s 70 title, benefiting from a walkover provided by opponent Johannes Muehlenburg of Austria in the final. Peter Pokorny of Austria then extended his lead as the player with most European titles by defending the Men’s 75 title that he won on his debut in the age group last year, running off to a 6-1 6-4 win over Hans Koller of Germany. In the most senior event, Henri Crutchet of France s retained his Men’s 80s title, topping his round-robin group over Herbert Althaus.
11 Issue 129 > June 2016
Men's 65 runner-up Peter Markltorfer (GER), winner Bruno Renoult (FRA) and bronze medallist Alfred Boeckl (GER).
The women’s singles events proved to be somewhat less predictable, with just one player – Lithuania’s Jurate Hardy – managing to defend her title from last year, the Women’s 45 championship. There was no shortage of big names from the ITF Senior Circuit in contention though. The Women’s 35 event saw a battle between two Top Five players as second seed Svenja Weidemann upset top seeded German compatriot and world #3 Stefanie Kolar for the loss of just one game. The Women’s 50 event saw top seed Liselot Prechtel of the Netherlands in dominant form, dropping just five games in three matches, including a 6-0 6-0 win over Poland’s Malgorzata Andrzejczuk in the final. Spanish world #2 Encarnacion Gomis Ruiz has been a prolific Senior Circuit winner in recent years and kept up her good running, winning the Women’s 60 roundrobin event. The Women’s 65 saw Susanne Schweda score an impressive win over world #1 Heidi Eisterlehner before following up with victory over another German compatriot, Sylvia Balkow to seal the title. Germans also dominated the remaining categories, with current world #1 Sylvia Bauwens fighting back from a set down to claim the Women’s 70 title over Barbara con Ende (5-7 6-3 6-2), and Ingrid Kaminski outperforming Renate Grund to top the Women’s 75 round-robin group. The European Championships is a Grade B1 event on the ITF Seniors Circuit and offers 240 ranking points to the winners, making the event the biggest in Europe in terms of points available.

Djokovic & Muguruza claim landmark Roland Garros titles The Fairytales The women’s final was a display of tenacity and commitment. Garbiñe Muguruza becomes the first Spanish woman to win the title since Arantxa Sanchez Vicario in 1998. Muguruza was on a mission and there was nothing that Serena Williams could come up with to stop the onslaught. Although Williams had appeared sluggish in the previous round, there were no signs of nerves on her part in the final. In fact, the match was a showcase of powerful and precise shot-making. “She came to win,” claimed Serena after the match. And that she did. A lob winner on match point secured a 7-5 6-4 win, a rise to number 2 in the rankings and a place in history. After the match, a teary Muguruza proclaimed, “I can’t explain with words how much this day means to me. You work all your life to get here!” Their head to head record now stands at 3-2 in favour of Williams, both of whose losses to Muguruza have been on the clay at Roland Garros. Steffi Graf’s name will continue to be mentioned until Serena equals or surpasses her tally of 22 Grand Slam titles. Serena remains on 21 for at least a while longer and her next chance will come in a month at Wimbledon, where the surface has traditionally favoured her game. She may meet Garbiñe in the title match, the same player she defeated in last year’s final. Could this be the dawn of an exciting new rivalry at the top of the women’s game? Tennis writers are running out of superlatives to describe Novak Djokovic, so perhaps facts and stats might serve as the best way to bring the point home. This was his 12th time at Roland Garros and coincidentally his 12th Grand Slam win, bringing him to within five of equalling the record set by Roger Federer. Djokovic’s first French Open title completes his very own “Nole Slam”, making him the first player since Rod Laver in 1969 to hold all four Grand Slams simultaneously. He also joins the select few who have completed the career Grand Slam. By reaching the French Open semi-finals, he has already guaranteed himself a spot at the end of year championships, the earliest in the season this has ever been achieved. He has more ranking points than the number 2 and number 3 player combined and only seems to be getting stronger. This is his 203rd week as world number one, 99 weeks short of Federer’s record of 302 weeks in the top spot. In the eagerly anticipated final, Andy Murray came out of the blocks ready to bring it to Djokovic and stunned him with some aggressive play to take the first set 6-3. Djokovic was nonplussed and seemed to move up a gear effortlessly. Harder, faster and
15 Issue 129 > June 2016
more accurate shots, combined with a seeming wane in Murray’s self-belief led to a 6-1 6-2 6-4 shutout of the Scot in the ensuing sets. The fact that he was able to overcome the first set blip and able to so easily brush aside the number 2 player is testament to his confidence and dominance. After the match the Serb teared up, thanked the crowd for their love and support and claimed that it was the biggest moment of his career. The Hits Dominic Thiem’s Grand Slam breakthrough came in impressive style. The 22-year old former European Junior Champion entered the event on a hot streak, having won in Nice the previous week, and continued his form in Paris, taking out three Spaniards plus the in-form Alexander Zverev and David Goffin on his way to a first major semi-final and a spot in the world’s Top Ten. Australian Sam Stosur seems to play some of her best tennis on clay. Feeling no pressure whatsoever, unlike when she plays in front of her home crowds, the 2010 finalist progressed to her fourth semi-final here. On the way, she took out world number 6 and 2014 runner-up, Simona Halep of Romania, and will now be back in the top 15. Dutch 55th-ranked Kiki Bertens also made a run all the way to the semis, only to be denied by Serena Williams. American Shelby Rogers (world number 108), Yulia Putintseva (55) of Kazakhstan and Bulgarian Tzvetana Pironkova (108) were all surprise quarter-finalists, along with unheralded Spaniard Albert RamosVinolas (55) in the men’s draw. The Misses The second Grand Slam event of the year got off the ground without two European powerhouses, Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova. After the news about Federer and local showman Gael Monfils, who was also sidelined due to injury, living claycourt legend Rafael Nadal added to the disappointments,

Djokovic & Muguruza claim landmark Roland Garros titles announcing his withdrawal from his beloved tournament before his third round match, citing a left wrist injury. Adding to this was the carnage of the seeds in the women’s draw during the first week. Injury hampered the recent comeback of Belarussian Victoria Azarenka, forcing her to eventually pull out of her first round match. German Angelique Kerber failed to repeat the brilliant form that took her to victory in Melbourne, going down in three sets at the first hurdle to Bertens. Double Wimbledon champ and top ten staple Czech Petra Kvitova also lost early, although the clay has never been her favourite surface. Crowd favourite Ana Ivanovic was only able to show off her eye-catching new look for three rounds, as she was sent home by Ukrainian up-and-comer Elena Svitolina.
nance of European players looks set to continue well into the future, judging by the results in the Juniors’ tournament, as its players dominated the draws and honour rolls. The Titles
Another miss was the weather. Delays and damp conditions hampered progress of the event and made playing conditions less than favourable, as spectators rugged up in the stands. In cold and soggy conditions that sorely tested the spirits of the players, fans and tournament organisers, Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland and Romanian Simona Halep lost their rain-interrupted matches beneath dark skies and before a virtually empty stadium. The Doubles There was more silverware for Spain as Feliciano Lopez and Marc Lopez teamed to win the men’s title. The pair saw off the fancied Bryan brothers in a tough three set final, thus winning their first ever Grand Slam title. Much to delight of the local crowd, French pair Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic won the women’s doubles title, their fourth tournament victory of this clay court season. In the mixed doubles, the Swiss Miss Martina Hingis teamed with Indian Leander Paes to take the crown in a super tiebreak over her doubles partner, Sania Mirza of India and Croatian partner Ivan Dodig. Notably, Hingis’ feat now completes her set of victories in all Grand Slam events in Doubles and Mixed Doubles. Were it not for her loss to Iva Majoli in the 1997 singles final, or to Graf in the infamous 1999 final, she would have a career box set of Grand Slam titles. The Juniors French boy Geoffrey Blancaneaux was victorious in the boys’ event, while Rebeka Masarova of Switzerland took the girls’ trophy. Yshai Oliel (ISR) and Patrick Rikl (CZE) won the doubles crown, while that of the girls went to Paula Arias Manjon (ESP) and Olga Danilovic (SRB). The strength and domi-

Beyond the Baseline... The French Tennis Federation has announced that the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas final between France and defending champion Czech Republic will be played in Strasbourg on an indoor hard court during the weekend of November 12-13. The grass court season will be even bigger in 2017, with the addition of a new ATP World Tour 250 Series event in Antalya, Turkey. After a two year absence, the men will also return to Eastbourne, Great Britain for another 250-Series grass court event. Brad Parks was awarded with the International Tennis Federation’s highest honour, the Philippe Chatrier Award, at the organisation’s annual World Champions Dinner in Paris during the French Open. The recognition was given to the founder of wheelchair tennis on the 40th anniversary of its creation. UK broadcaster BT Sport has renewed its role as rights holder to broadcast WTA Tour events for the next three years, and will cover 52 live tournaments from 2017-19, a massive expansion of its current 21 events. Meanwhile, Sky Deutschland has won exclusive rights to show ATP Masters 1000 events, the ATP World Tour Finals and select 500-Series events in Germany and Austria. Former world #2 Tommy Haas is the new tournament director of the Indian Wells tournament. Tennis features prominently in Forbes’ annual list of the world’s highest paid athletes. Roger Federer is fourth, with a reported $67.8m, followed by Novak Djokovic at sixth with $55.8m. Rafa Nadal (21st), Kei Nishikori (29th), Serena Williams (40th), Andy Murray (74th) and Maria Sharapova (88th) also feature in the Top 100. The ITF has launched a new Officiating Education website, designed to improve the level of knowledge for officials around the world. The site, which contains articles, presentations, tests and courses, is available to registered officials via the existing ITF Officiating portal. Injury watch: Two-time former champion Rafael Nadal was forced to withdraw from Roland Garros mid-tournament due to a left injury that will also see the Spaniard skip Wimbledon. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga – also forced out of the French Open mid-tournament – has also withdrawn from the pre-Wimbledon warm-ups.

Coaching carousel: Milos Raonic, now working with Carlos Moyá and Riccardo Piatti, will add another former world #1 to his team during the grass court season, as John McEnroe lends a hand. Andy Murray has reunited with Ivan Lendl, who led him to win two Grand Slam titles during their first stint together. Stan Wawrinka, meanwhile, is working with 1996 Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek during the grass court season. Petra Kvitova is working with former men’s doubles specialist Frantisek Cermak as she prepares her attempt to win a third Wimbledon crown. Nicolas Mahut has become the third doubles player to reach the world #1 spot for the first time this season, following hot on the heels of Jamie Murray and Marcelo Melo. Former world #1 Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario is the new ambassador for the season-ending WTA Finals in Singapore. Wimbledon men’s singles wild cards have been announced for Dustin Brown, Radek Stepanek, Liam Broady, Alex Ward and James Ward. On the ladies’ side, Daniela Hantichova, Marina Melnikova, Laura Robson, Tara Moore and Katie Swan are all confirmed recipients of the invitation to compete. Three more wild cards are still pending in each category. IBM and the All-England Lawn Tennis Club have announced a raft of new digital features for this year’s Wimbledon Championships. These include a brand new Apple TV app that will allow users to engage with Wimbledon from their own homes, while a new smartphone app will be responsive to all screen sizes, providing multi-content personalised feeds. The new apps also provide an enhanced experience for visitors onsite at Wimbledon, including personalised messaging, and the opportunity to create their own Wimbledon Story, allowing fans to capture and share their day at the tournament. There will be some eye-catching exhibitions at the Croatia Open in Umag next month. 1992 Wimbledon finalists Andre Agassi and Goran Ivanisevic will renew their rivalry, while newly-married and recently retired 2015 US Open champion Flavia Pennetta will face Croatia’s Donna Vekic. The pair will then return for a mixed doubles match, as Pennetta teams with husband Fabio Fognini while Vekic pairs with Ivanisevic.

Tennis Europe Junior Tour Rankings - Overall Tennis Europe’s junior ranking system is devised to give a unified overall list that shows the relative strengths of all players, regardless of where they achieved their results or picked up points. A player’s overall total includes points from Tennis Europe Junior Tour 16 and 14 & Under events, plus points earned by players in these age categories who participate in ITF Junior Circuit and professional tournaments, all of which are weighted accor-
ding to their relative strengths. The 14 & Under ranking is still available separately (see next page), as well as being integrated to these overall rankings. For more information on the rankings system, check out the Tennis Europe Junior Tour Rules and Regulations at www.TennisEurope.org. The ‘Race to the Masters’ rankings are also available separately, and include points earned exclusively at Tennis Europe Junior Tour events. Rankings below are as of June 14th 2016.

Tennis Europe Junior Tour Rankings - 14 & Under Following a slew of big events in recent weeks, there have been some massive changes at the top of the Tennis Europe Junior Rankings. One of the most significant is Helene Pellicano’s ascent to the top of the 14 & Under rankings, thanks - at least in small part - to her victory at the Category 1 16 & Under event in Biella. This makes the reigning Junior Masters champion the first player from Malta ever to top the Tennis Europe Junior Rankings.
The boys’ 14 & Under list also has a new #1, with Category 1 Piestany singles and doubles champion Dalibor Svrcina of the Czech Republic replacing Harold Mayot. Lorenzo Rottoli is a high new entry to the Top Ten, following some big performances at 16 & under events in his home country of Italy. Full ranking lists www.TennisEurope.org.
