Three way battle for European Tennis Trophy honours Germany last won the Overall Performance title in 2014 - its first such prize in 18 years – and has already secured the Senior Tennis title. Such is the German dominance in this category that no other nation has ever won the award, and the country already has more than four times as many points as second-placed Austria. France won the most recent of its four Overall Performance titles in 2010 and is in a strong position to reclaim the top spot, sharing the Professional Tennis leadership with Fed Cup by BNP Paribas final rivals Czech Republic, and holding a strong secondplace in the Wheelchair Tennis category. 2015 winner Russia is currently adrift of the leading pack, with just over half the points of the Czechs. However, the nation’s strong performances at the recent summer junior team events are likely to see
the winners of the Junior Tennis Trophy for the last five years make up considerable ground. Indeed, all is not yet lost for any of Tennis Europe’s 50 member nations. A bumper crop of points is available in this Olympic and Paralympic year, meaning that big changes can be expected during the coming weeks and months. The first Trophy Race update of 2016 includes all points earned by nations from January to June. Rankings that use a rollover 52-week system are not counted in the point totals at this stage. The final point standings will be announced during the first week of the 2016 season, and the awards presented to national federations at the 2017 Tennis Europe Annual General Meeting. Tennis Europe Nations Challenge by HEAD Bulgaria and Croatia have each won Europe’s summer 12 & Under team competition – the Tennis Europe Nations Challenge by HEAD – for the first time. At the girls’ final rounds in Ajaccio (FRA), the Bulgarian team topped their round-robin group, winning matches against Croatia, Czech Republic and Romania to set up a final with the winners of Group B, Belarus. Of the two teams, Belarus had been arguably the more impressive in the early stages, dropping just one match as they came from behind to defeat Russia on the second day of competition. Bulgaria seized control early on in the final however, as Stela Peeva scored a routine 6-3 6-3 win over Evialina Laskevich to put her team ahead. Katerina Dimitrova then secured the tie – and the winner’s trophy – by defeating Aliona Falei 6-4 6-2, securing an unassaible 2/0 lead. The Belarusians managed to score a consolation point in the doubles, Laskevich and Ilaryia Grudino recovering from the loss of the first set to score a 3-6 6-3 [10-6] win over Dimitrova and Denislava Glushkova. Bulgaria thus becomes just the fourth nation to the win the girls’ competition, with Russia (5 titles), Ukraine (3) and Romania (1) having accounted for all previous editions. The boy’s final rounds were held at the Mouratoglou Academy in Biot (FRA), and saw Russia emerge to face Croatia in the final. The Russians had gone unbeaten in singles on their way to the final, losing dead doubles matches to Bulgaria and Czech Republic, and scoring a 3-0 rout of Italy in the first three days of the competition. Croatia also advanced serenely to the final showdown, winning both singles against Great Britain before completing 3/0 wins over Belgium and Romania.

As could be anticipated, the final proved to be hotly contested. Croatia’s Mili Poljicak scored first for his team with a 6-3 7-5 win over Konstantin Zhzhenov. The two #1 players were next onto court, and Russia’s Mikhail Gorokhov proved to be the stronger, as he dismissed Dino Prizmic for the loss of just three games to level the tie. The four players returned to the court for the deciding doubles match, which went right to wire. After splitting the first two sets 6-4, a tense champions’ tie-break followed, with the Croats eventually securing a 10-8 win, enabling them to lift the European 12&U team title for their country for the first time. European Summer Cups Russia has become the first nation ever to win all of Tennis Europe's 16 & Under team competitions in the same year, having scooped both the boys’ and girls’ 16 & Under European Summer Cups titles. The top seeded Russians were forced to come from behind to secure victory at the boys’ finals in Le Touquet, France. Despite having lost their two previous matches on the Tennis Europe Junior Tour, Tomas Machac put their Czech rivals ahead with a three set win over Alen Avidzba in the first rubber. The top seeds dominated the two remaining matches though, with Timofey Skatov conceding just two games to Ondrej Styler to level the tie. Avidzba then returned to the court alongside Alexey Zakharov to beat Styler and Evzen Holis 6-3 6-0 to seal the Borotra Cup title for a third time. The team lost just one match in the entire competition, a dead doubles match in their opening tie against France before going on to beat Slovenia, Romania, Austria, Switzerland and Czech Republic. The Russian girls’ team was even more dominant at their finals in Budapest, keeping up an incredible streak that saw the team go through the entire competition without losing a single match. Having seen off Croatia and Italy 3/0 in the qualifying rounds before receiving a walkover against Great Britain in the final qualifying match, the team picked up where they left off by blasting past Romania in the quarter finals for the loss of just eleven games in three matches. The semi-final against Czech Republic proved to be

European Summer Cups The final match against Poland saw Potapova ease to a 6-1 6-4 win over Maja Chwalinksa before Pervushina beat recent European Junior Championship silver medallist Iga Swiatek 6-2 6-4 to secure Russia’s fifth win in this age category since 2009, and ninth overall. Added to their wins at the Tennis Europe Winter Cups by HEAD in February, the victories mean that Russia becomes the first nation ever to win all four 16 & Under European team trophies in the same season. The 16 & Under Summer Cups also serve as the regional qualifying for the Junior Davis and Fed Cup by BNP Paribas competitions, the finals of which will be held in Budapest from 27 September – 2 October. Marvin Moeller had opened the tie by giving the top seeded Germans a 1/0 lead thanks to a comfortable 6-3 6-3 win over twice European champion Corentin Moutet. In the second singles, Geoffrey Blancaneaux levelled the encounter with a straight sets victory over Louis Wessels. With the stage set for a deciding doubles match, Moeller & Wessels faced Moutet and French #3 Elliot Benchetrit. First blood went to the Germans, who claimed the first set, but the fresher legs of the French pair sprang to life in the second, the second seeds taking it 6-3. A marathon 22-point champions’ tie-break followed, with the French pair eventually sealing victory 12-10. Bronze medals went to Russia, who won both their singles matches to beat Belgium. The 18 & Under girls’ Summer Cups finals are still to be played, and will take place in Lleida, Spain, during the weekend of 16-18 September where teams from Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Moldova,

European Junior Championships Tennis Europe’s flagship junior event – the European Junior Championships – has once again drawn to a close after a week in which almost 500 participants battled for the prestigious title at three venues, and across three age categories. 14 & Under Helene Pellicano has once again etched her country into the record books, this time by becoming the first Maltese player ever to win the European Junior Championships. The final match in Pilsen (CZE) was relatively straightforward; after a hard-fought first set, the top seed won eight of the last nine games to seal a 6-4 61 win over Czech fourth seed Denisa Hindova, a small measure of revenge for defeat at the hands of the Czech in the doubles quarterfinals earlier in the week. The win was a fourth straight sets victory of the week for Pellicano, whose only struggle came in a marathon semi-final against Croatia’s Noa Krznaric, in which she was forced to battle back from the brink of defeat before securing a 2-6 7-6(4) 6-4 win. Last October, Pellicano became the first player from her country ever to win a Tennis Europe Junior Masters title, and earlier this year became the first to reach the Tennis Europe Junior Tour’s #1 ranking, a position she holds once again following victory in Pilsen. Hindova still leaves the Championships with two medals, having secured the doubles gold on Saturday alongside Kristyna Lavickova. The pair upset top seeded Russians Daria Frayman & Avelina Sayfetdinova in the final. In Sunday’s second singles Dalibor Svrcina claimed a second gold medal for the host nation, surviving a tight first set before accelerating away from unseeded Italian Lorenzo Musetti 7-6(6) 6-3. The current Tennis Europe Junior Tour #1, top seeded Svrcina was in strong form throughout the week, winning all six of his matches without conceding a set, and also reaching the semi-final of the doubles event.

His conquerors in the doubles semis – Arthur Cazaux & Lilian Marmousez – went on to win the gold medal for France, beating Musetti and Italian team-mate Lorenzo Rottoli in the final.

European Junior Championships National Tennis Centre in Moscow for a tenth year, Olga Danilovic of Serbia won the battle of the top two seeds to proclaim herself as European Champion for the first time. The second seed put in a dominant performance to beat Poland’s Iga Swiatek for the loss of just four games as she emerged a 6-3 6-1 winner, and becomes the first ever European champion for Serbia in this age category. Swiatek had been hoping to join an elite band of players to have won multiple European Junior titles, having won the 14 & Under competition in Pilsen last year. The Pole should not be too disappointed, however, having added a silver medal to the doubles gold that she secured the previous day alongside Maja Chwalinska when the pair rushed to a 6-0 6-0 win over Russians Varvara Gracheva & Vlada Koval in the final. Carlos Sanchez Jover staged an astonishing fightback to beat his friend and team-mate Rafael Izquierdo Luque in the first ever all-Spanish boys' singles final. Izquierdo was unstoppable in the first set, racing through the first six games before Sanchez managed to get on to the scoreboard early in the second set. From there the match was level, with Sanchez holding his nerve to claim a second set tie-break before accelerating away for a 6-2 final set win. Both unseeded, the Spanish pair had each impressed throughout week, with Sanchez accounting for the 2nd and 13th seeds while Izquierdo despatched the event’s #1, #6 and #12 seeds on route to the final. The previous day, eleventh seeds Jake Hersey & Aidan McHugh became just the third pair of Britons ever to win the 16 & Under boys’ doubles title, edging to a 7-6(1) 7-5 victory over Greece’s Petros Tsitsipas & Aitor Zerdilas Herrera. As in the 14 & Under competition, the four 16 & Under singles finalists – Sanchez Jover, Izquierdo Luque, Danilovic and Swiatek – are also confirmed as the first four Tennis Europe Junior Masters qualifiers. 18 & Under At the European 18 & Under Championships, which were held for a 20th time in Klosters, Switzerland, Stefanos Tstitsipas and Amina Anshba claimed the singles titles, though there was an unfortunate and controversial ending to the boys’ event. Stefanos Tsitsipas was well on his way to earning the

title in a high-level match when at 7-6, 5-3, 30-0 he was two points away from glory. A well-deserved glory, as the tall Greek proved worthy of his number one seeding and ITF ranking at all times, he was clearly the best player in the draw. At this crucial stage in the match, his opponent Corentin Moutet was unhappy with the chair umpire’s decision not to check a mark and decided to shake his hand before completion of the match. The Frenchman had had his chances earlier in the match when the highly gifted lefthander was unable to convert two set points in the tiebreak. Later, he received two warnings. European Junior Championships ment’s history. And the winner was delighted to be able to lift the heavy trophy after last year’s close semi-final loss, saying, “I am simply happy.” The winner had also been the crowd’s favourite. In every free minute he had played either tennis on a mini court or football, including with the locals and kids. Moreover, on social media, he delivered one PR post for Klosters after another during the week. And he confirmed how much he likes the resort: “It’s fantastic here,” he said. “I can’t think of a more beautiful spot to play tennis. I am speechless.” Plenty of other winners of this event went on to leave their mark on the ATP tour. This isn’t likely to be different in his case: Tsitsipas has already climbed to number 359 in the ATP rankings and went on to impress at a challenger event in Scheveningen in the Netherlands the following week. “I’d love to be soon in the Top 200 and to be able to play the qualifying event at the Australian Open,” he said, when asked about his upcoming goals. Moutet’s undignified exit from the tournament denies him the chance to join Mats Wilander as the only player to win European Junior Championship titles in all three age categories – 14, 16 and 18 & Under – but he will no doubt be back stronger as he continues to progress into the professional game.
ning streak after having beaten Swiss favourite Rebeka Masarova in the semis. She prevailed in the first all-Russian final in Klosters by upsetting topseed Olesya Pervushina 6-4 2-6 6-2 and became the first Russian winner of the title since Anna Kournikova 21 years ago. Anshba proved to be a true ‘marathon woman’, coming through from the quarter finals onwards in three sets every time. And she is earning a reputation as a tough competitor, having now won her last ten three-set matches in a row. “I have no secret, I just fight for every point”, she said. She also has a clear next goal, stating that she would like to become #1 in the ITF ranking. The goal is now closer than ever, after her points from Klosters were added to the rankings, leaving her on the edge of the Top 5. The doubles gold medals in Klosters went to teams from Poland and – for the first time ever – Norway. The Polish combination of Piotr Matuszewski & Kacper Zuk made short work of their Russian opponents Artem Dubrivnyy & Pavel Kotov whereas Norwegians Astrid Wanja Brune Olsen & Malene Helgo defeated Italians Federica Bilardo & Tatjana Pieri, claiming the trophy after two tight sets. ITF/Tennis Europe 16 & Under Touring Team in Italy and Tunisia This year’s ITF/Tennis Europe 16 & Under touring team recently took part in a 5-week tour of Italy and Tunisia. The stint began on 26th May with a training camp held at Circolo Tennis Foligno where the team of four girls - Iveta Daujotaite (LTU), Eleni Louka (CYP), Ksenia Yersh (BLR), Mariam Dalakishvili (GEO) - and four boys - Lukas Tomic (BIH), Andrej Andreevski (MKD), Nikoloz Davlianidze (GEO), Martin Borisiouk (BLR) were able to get to know each other and their coaches Kenan Malicbegovic (BIH) and Egor Semichin (MDA) before going on to compete at two high level Category 1 Tennis Europe tournaments in Italy and two ITF Grade 4 tournaments in Tunisia. The tour began with the Tennis Europe 16 & Under Category 1 tournament that was held in Foligno, Italy where the team had some success. Mariam Dalakishvili played the semi-final of the girls’ singles event, losing to Carlota Martinez Cirez (ESP) 6-1 76(6). Eleni Louka also reached the semi-final and lost to Maria Camila Osorio Serrano (COL) 6-1 6-3. In the boys’ singles main draw, Martin Borisiouk reached the quarter-final where he lost to Alessio De Bernardis (ITA) 6-3 3-6 6-2. The girls dominated the doubles event, taking up all four final spots. The stronger team was Dalakishvili & Yersh who won against Louka & Daujotaite 3-6 6-3 11-9. In the boys' doubles Borisiouk & Davlianidze reached the semifinal but fell to the Italian team of De Bernardis & Tommaso Lippi 3-6 6-1 10-4. The team then continued to the next Tennis Europe Category 1 event, the 52° Torneo dell' Avvenire, held in Milan, Italy. In the girl’s main draw, Yersh, Dalakishvili and Daujotaite all reached the second round, with Borisiouk also reaching the second round of the boys’ tournament. After three weeks in Italy, the team moved to Tunisia for two ITF Grade 4 tournaments. First up was a tournament held in Kelibia. Mariam Dalakishvili was the most successful of the players, reaching the semifinal before losing to the eventual champion Dalila Said (EGY) 6-4 6-1. Said also accounted for Ksenia Yersh in the quarter finals. In the boys’ main draw Nikoloz Davilanidze reached the quarter-final and lost to De Carvalho Cardoso Alves (BRA) 6-2 6-0. The girls’ doubles event again saw the two teams meet each other, but this time in the semi-final. Dalakishvili & Yersh once again came out on top, beating teammates Louka & Daujotaite 7-6(8) 6-1. In the doubles final Dalakishvili & Yersh once again came unstuck at the hands of Dalila Said, who teamed with Miranda Ramirez (USA) for a 1-6 6-3 10-6 victory. The final ITF tournament was held in Mahdia, where Nikoloz Davlianidze posted his best result of the tour,

In the girls’ main draw Iveta Daujotaite reached the quarter-final, losing to Maria Camila Osorio Serrano (COL) 6-1 6-1. Dalakishvili & Yersh again reached the semi-final but lost a close match to Polish team Weronika Falkowska & Wiktoria Rutkowska, 3-6 6-2 10-6. ITF/Tennis Europe Team coach Kenan Malicbegovic commented; "This year's members of the ITF/Tennis Europe Team have shown great team spirit, a high level of tennis and clear motivation to improve their game. The players have learned new skills and were open to discover new ideas. Together with my collegue Egor Semichin we shared our experience and knowledge, informing the players about hydration, rituals, doubles game tactics, and many other areas. We are sure that these five weeks will help the players to be even more successful in future".

Henceforth, Hingis will team with Coco Vandeweghe, while Mirza will play alongside Barbora Strycova.
France will host the Czech Republic on an indoor hard court in Strasbourg for the final of the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas on the weekend of 12-13 November. The Czechs are bidding for a fifth title in the last six years, with the two nations tied at 3-3 in Fed Cup encounters.
Ille Nastase has been awarded the prestigious ‘Star of Romania’ by the Romanian government, in recognition of his lifelong services to the sport.
Next month’s US Open will offer the biggest total prize fund in the history of tennis, with the men’s and women’s singles champions each earning $3.5 million. A total of $46.3 million will be on offer at the final grand slam tournament of the season, an increase of $4 million on the 2015 event. This year’s tournament will also feature a retractable roof for the first time, with construction finally completed on the cover for the Arthur Ashe Stadium. Amongst the names receiving US Open wild cards are Olympic silver medallist Juan Martin del Potro, mixed doubles gold medallist Bethanie Mattek Sands and mixed silver medallist Rajeev Ram. Andy Murray’s second Wimbledon triumph was seen by a peak audience of 13.3 million viewers on British TV. The world #2 this week became just the 24th player to reach 600 match wins on the ATP Tour, just 116 matches on from his 500th match milestone. 34-year old Paolo Lorenzi of Italy became the oldest ever first-time titlist on the ATP Tour with a victory in Kitzbuhel recently. Petra Kvitova has signed a deal to become an ambassador for Czech jewellery brand ALO diamonds. Three leading WTA stars have celebrated weddings recently; Tsvetana Pironkova married boyfriend Mihail Mirchev, Dimonika Cibulkova married Miso Navara and Ana Ivanovic tied the knot with Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Timea Bacsinszky has been appointed by UNAIDS as a Global Advocate for Young People, working to ensure that they have access to information and services related to HIV/AIDS. Coaching carousel: Goran Ivanisevic is no longer working with Marin Cilic, and has joined Tomas Berdych’s coaching team. Meanwhile, Cilic has announced that he will be coached by Jonas Bjorkman. Bob & Mike Bryan have announced that they will no longer be coached by David MacPherson, ending an 11-year professional relationship. Former Top 5 player Nicole Vaidisova has retired for a second time, abandoning her comeback as a result of injuries. Marat Safin, Justine Henin and Amelie Mauresmo have been inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka has announced that she is pregnant, and intends to return to the sport following the birth of her first child. Former Top 20 doubles player Eric Butorac has been appointed as the USTA’s new Director of Professional Tennis Operations and Player Relations, a role which he will undertake from October. Victory in Cincinatti this week would see Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber oust Serena Williams from the world #1 spot, a position the American has held for 183 consecutive weeks.

Tennis Europe Junior Tour Rankings - Overall Tennis Europe’s junior ranking system is devised to give a unified overall list that shows the relative strengths of all players, regardless of where they achieved their results or picked up points. A player’s overall total includes points from Tennis Europe Junior Tour 16 and 14 & Under events, plus points earned by players in these age categories who participate in ITF Junior Circuit and professional tournaments, all of which are weighted accor-
ding to their relative strengths. The 14 & Under ranking is still available separately (see next page), as well as being integrated to these overall rankings. For more information on the rankings system, check out the Tennis Europe Junior Tour Rules and Regulations at www.TennisEurope.org. The ‘Race to the Masters’ rankings are also available separately, and include points earned exclusively at Tennis Europe Junior Tour events. Rankings below are as of August 17th 2016.

Tennis Europe Junior Tour Rankings - 14 & Under With the reigning #1s both emerging triumphant at the recent European Junior Championships, there have been no changes at the very top of the 14 & Under rankings this month. China’s Qinwen Zheng leads a plethora of equally impressive perfomances further down the list though, having recently won her fourth Category 1 singles event of the season at the BNP Paribas Cup in Paris.
On the boy’s list, Lorenzo Musetti has reached the singles or doubles final at every event he has contested so far in 2016, claiming two European Championship silver medals, and playing on the winning Winter Cups by HEAD and Summer Cups teams as well as two Category 1 doubles and one singles title. Full ranking lists can be found at www.TennisEurope.org. Rankings below are as of August 17th 2016.

Polar Training Tips: Add hill running to your training regimen Incorporating hill training into your conditioning plan will improve your performance and muscle fitness when on court. Here are some reasons why hill training is good for you. 1. Hill training improves general endurance and speed Hill training forces your muscles to work differently and disrupts your body’s homeostasis. Hill repeats also add strength and intensity to your training. Additionally, maximizing oxygen uptake is easier up a hill than on an even-levelled surface. 2. Running on uneven terrain makes muscles develop more naturally uneven terrain. It is also a good idea to do some hill training on rough terrain, as running on roads and level surfaces places a monotonous strain on your legs and your musculoskeletal system will not develop as optimally as on
