Elite players end season in style at Tennis Europe Junior Masters Four new champions have been crowned at the Tennis Europe Junior Masters in Reggio Calabria following a hard-fought but friendly weekend in which the Tennis Europe Junior Tour’s top players faced each other for the last time this season. With the finals streamed live online, the first match to be completed was the boys’ 14 & Under final, which saw Radu Papoe of Romania beat fourth seeded Dane Holger Rune 6-2 6-4. Unseeded Papoe, a late addition to the tournament following the withdrawal of Serbia’s Viktor Jovic, was naturally delighted with his win. “I was hopeful, but I didn’t really expect to win when I came here. This is definitely my best tournament of the year,” said Papoe after the match. Ranked 25th before the tournament, Papoe subsequently shot into the (continued on Page 2)

Elite players end season in style at Tennis Europe Junior Masters 14 & Under Top Ten as a result of his win, which included victories over top seed Oleksiy Shestakov and Elmer Moller, and saw him progress to the title without the loss of a set. Federica Sacco brought a partisan centre court crowd to its feet in the Girls 14 & Under final, producing a controlled and consistent display to beat Russia’s Maria Timofeeva 6-4 6-3. Like Papoe, the win was just Sacco’s second Tennis Europe Junior Tour title of the season, and came on the biggest of stages. The 14-year old from Napoli also becomes the first Italian girl to win a Masters title since Lisa Tognetti in 2000. “When I came here I definitely didn’t expect to win; I just hoped to win one match, and then the second match. But when I reached the final, I said, ‘OK, let’s really try to win this!’”, she smiled. Mariam Dalakishvili has had an even more productive season, with four singles titles under her belt prior to the Masters. She kept up her good form to defeat Serbia’s Tamara Malesevic 7-6(4) 6-3 and claim the most important title of her junior career so far. “My goal all year was just to qualify for the Masters, so it’s just a perfect feeling to win this tournament. Knowing that players like Nadal won this tournament makes me feel like I have a pretty good future,” she said. Her immediate future is also bright, with the Georgian #1 now poised to break into the 16 & Under Top Ten for the first time. The last match to be completed was the Boys 16 & Under final, a high quality and tense battle between

Elite players end season in style at Tennis Europe Junior Masters middle of the second set (including a reflex backhand lob winner followed in the next point by a tweener) got the crowd on his side and he managed to break back to force a tie-break. Krainer held his nerve though, serving out for a 6-4 7-6(5) win that made him the first ever Austrian Junior Masters champion. “In the second set I started to think about winning, and it affected my timing,” he explained. “But now I’m so happy, I can’t even describe the feeling.” The matches were followed by a lavish prize-giving ceremony, during which representatives of the host club, CT Rocco Polimeni, awarded the traditional ‘Fair Play’ prize to Ziva Falkner. The Slovenian was recognised for her excellent conduct during the tournament, and for her enthusiasm in conducting a hitting session with a disabled player. The Tennis Europe Junior Masters is a season-ending event for the elite players of the Tennis Europe Junior Tour, with the top eight players of the 14 and 16 & Under age categories invited to compete. Former champions include top players such as Belinda Bencic (2011), Rafael Nadal (2000) and Kim Clijsters (1997), while Andy Murray (2001), Agnieska Radwanska (2003) and Flavia Pennetta (1997) feature amongst the other notable players to have competed at the event.

As Patrick [Mouratoglou] said, this is just the beginning, and we are looking forward to working closely with the Academy as a base for our events, players and coaches in the coming years. Already this year, the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy has served as the venue for two successful Tennis Europe Junior Tour events, the 12 and 16 & Under Mouratoglou Cups. This event also marked the celebration of the 2nd edition of the annual gala diner in favor of the Champ’Seed Foundation, founded in 2014 by Patrick Mouratoglou, which has the mission of supporting the best junior players from all over the world who do not have the financial means to pursue a professional career.

Mouratoglou Integration Weekend As is tradition at the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy, the new school year kicked off with the Integration Weekend. All of the 164 student/athletes were taken to the Lac de Saint-Cassien, located approximately 45 minutes away from the Academy, to partake in two days of intense physical activity. On Monday 12th September, students were divided into teams, each led by several of the fitness and tennis coaches. Each team took part in the 25kms (15 kms for the youngest students) orientation race around the lake, followed by a nautical orientation race later on that afternoon. The following day included a succession of fun sporting activities located on the camp site of the lake. These activities included: a giant size football game, a mini mountain bike course, an army style boot camp, a nautical relay race across the lake and a tug of war. All in all, the Initiation Weekend proved

Tennis Europe to launch new promotional tools for event organisers Tennis Europe is poised to launch a range of innovative new tools to assist tournament organisers in the promotion of Tennis Europe Junior Tour events. Working together with leading international design agency Designroom Sport, the European federation has created a series of customisable assets, which it hopes will increase brand awareness of the Tennis Europe Junior Tour, whilst strengthening the connections between events, sponsors and stakeholders. Tournament organisers will be able to choose from a selection of player images and layouts, add logos from partners and sponsors and add event details. The range of assets include templates for posters (as shown), magazine/brochure articles, social media posts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram), leaflets/flyers and e-mail footers. The full materials, and further information will be sent to all tournament directors, free of charge, in the coming weeks. Having celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Junior Tour last year, Tennis Europe continues to invest in its

growth and development, in this instance using funds from the organisation’s reserves to finance the project. In 2016, the Tour consisted of a record 374 events, and has seen around 13,000 players in action. A total of 31 world #1 players played in Tennis Europe events as part of their pathway to the top of the game. Launching the tool, Tennis Europe Chief Executive Officer Olli Mäenpää said, “We know that the promotion of junior tournaments is something that can be very expensive and time consuming – two resources that event organisers do not always have. In creating these easy-to-manage tools for events that are part of the Tennis Europe Junior Tour, we hope to assist with the provision of high quality, professional content for organisers, while simultaneously increasing the brand identity and servicing the partners and sponsors that contribute so much to these tournaments.”

European Beach Tennis Championships Italian teams once again dominated the European Beach Tennis Championships, accounting for all of the titles on offer at the Santa Marina Holiday Village in Sozopol, where the event was hosted by the Bulgarian Tennis Federation. As early as the penultimate day, it was clear that Italian teams would take home the lion´s share of the silverware, with both the men’s and women’s finals being all-Italian encounters. The first of the finals to be decided was the men’s, which saw second seeds Luca Cramarossi & Marco Garavini upset the defending champion Michele Cappelletti and new partner Luca Carli, by the score of 6-1 7-5, ending hopes of a World/European Championship double for the world’s top two players. The win marks Garavini’s fifth men’s title at the European Beach Tennis Championships, while Cramarossi picks up his first crown. Carli & Cappelletti have now lost in the final on three occasions, with Garavini proving to be the stumbling block each time. The women’s final also saw the second seeds upset the world’s two best players, as Sofia Cimatti & Flamina Daina eased past Eva D’Elia & Giulia Gasparri 6-3 6-2. The win marked a successful title defence for Cimatti, who won the tournament in 2015 alongside Federica Bacchetta, while Daina improved on her runner-up spot from last year. There was consolation for D’Elia in the mixed doubles, where she helped Cramarossa claim his second title of this year’s championships. The top seeds were pushed all the way by Irina Glimakova & Ivan Syrov, but eventually managed to prevent a second successive Russian victory in the mixed championships with a 6-4 7-6 win, ensuring a clean sweep of titles for Italy for a ninth time in ten editions of the Championships.

Guiseppe Attolino & Andrea Banci claimed the boys’ title, while Greta Giusti & Veronica Casadei topped the girls’ league. Banci also teamed with Ninny Valentini to take the mixed doubles crown. In all, a total of 20 Tennis Europe member nations were represented at the senior event, with 120 players forming 92 doubles teams.

European Senior Club Championships at La Manga Club The 2016 European Senior Club Championships were held at La Manga Club in Spain last week, where players competed across six different age categories at the same venue for a fifth successive year. The event took place at the award-winning resort from 19-24 September and saw almost 200 players in action, representing a total of 38 teams. The events were played in a round-robin format, with new champions crowned in each of the categories. A Women’s 35 event was played for the first time and proved to be popular, with eight teams battling for the inaugural honours. British club Taunton eventually emerged victorious, having topped their group and beaten Group B winners TC de Hout of Netherlands in the final match. The match was all over after the singles rubbers, but both matches proved to be epic battles. Kate Brown gave the Brits a lead after recovering from a set down to outlast Caroline De Vries 6-7(4) 7-6(2) 6-3. Claire Raddan then sealed the victory after an equally tight 6-2 67(4) 7-5 win over Marjolein De Langen-Oudegeest. The Men’s 35 event saw victory for a home club, as Cercle Sabadellés 1856 (ESP) went unbeaten to edge BLTC Bastion Baselaar for the title. TV 1846 Alzey of Germany also went unbeaten in claiming victory in the Men’s 45 event, a first European title for the club. The team edged out last year’s champions, Vichy of France, to secure the top spot. The Women’s 50 event also saw the reigning champions fall at the final hurdle, as St. George’s Hill of Great Britain were beaten in the final by CC Villa de Madrid of Spain. Ana Almansa and Beatriz Pellón scored singles wins over Christine French and Karen Cass respectively to assure a 2-0 win. The Men’s 50 competition saw Italy’s ASD II Quadrifoglio beat Germany’s TC Blau Weiss Fürstenzell into second place, winning their match

3/2, and decisively beating Leicestershire LTC and LTV Leusderpark on route to victory. There were more silver medals for TC Blau Weiss Fürstenzell in the Men’s 50 event, as they were beaten in the final by ASD Nuovo Circolo Tennis Augusta. The Italians reversed a loss in the round-robin stages by winning all three of their singles match to clinch the title. Paolo Moscelli and Leonardo Panarello scored straight sets wins over Horst Engel and Fritz Tschernuth respectively, while Gaetano Longo recovered from the brink of defeat to squeeze past Hubert Freudenstein 1-6 7-6(4) 6-1. Two coaches, Goran Shevchenko (MKD) and Irena Chichmarova (BLR), accompanied the players. The players and the coaches met in Duren, Germany on July 23rd where they had a short time to meet, train and get to know each other before continuing to the first tournament of this summer’s tour in Duren. The results of the first tournament gave the players every reason to be optimistic about their trip. In the singles event, Viktoriya Kanapatskaya reached the final, where she was defeated by the Russian Darya Astakhova 6-3 7-6(3). Antreas Djakouris reached the semi-final and lost to Natan Rodrigues (BRA) 6-2 6-0. In the doubles tournament Kanapatskaya showed another great performance and with her partner Oksana Selekhmenteva (RUS) won the tournament against Weronika Baszak (POL) & Nina Stankovska (SVK) 6-4 6-1. singles, Bruzas fell in the final to Daniel Siniakov (CZE) 6-1 6-2. The Czech also bested Ozolins 7-5 6-3 in the quarterfinals. Great results were achieved in doubles events, too; Curmi & Avetisyan won the 14 & Under tournament against Czechs Petra Csabi & Klara Novakova 57 63 [10-8] while Kanapatskaya & Ristevska won the 16 & Under tournament against the Russian team Sofiia Likhacheva & Noel Saidenova 6-3 7-5. Jankulovski & Ozolins reached the boys’ semi-final, losing to the Bulgarians Alex Ganchev & Anthony Genov 7-5 6-0.
The tour continued in Hasselt, Belgium where the Team once again achieved excellent results. The girls’ singles featured some particularly strong performances; after winning against her teammate Renata Farima 6-1 6-1 in the semi-final, Kanapatskaya faced another teammate Francesca Curmi. The Maltese was more motivated and won a thrilling match 6-4 46 6-0. In the boys’ singles, Djakouris reached the quarters but lost to the eventual champion, Noah Martens (BEL) 7-5 6-3. The doubles events were also very fruitful, with an all-ITF/Tennis Europe Team final in girls doubles, which Kanapatskaya & Ristevska won against Curmi & Avetisyan 6-3 6-1. On the boys’s side, Djakouris & Bruzas reached the final, losing to Dev Javia (IND) & Ilya Snitari (MDA) after the champions had also ended the hopes of Jankulovski/Ozolins in the semi-finals.
The tour finished at the prestigious Jugend Cup in Renningen/Rutesheim, where the ITF/Tennis Europe players again stood out from the opposition. Kanapatskaya again led the way, coming from a set down to beat teammate Avetisyan in the semi-finals 36 6-1 6-3 to reach her fourth final of the Tour, where she fell to Russia’s Avelina Sayfetdinova 7-5 6-3. Bruzas reached the quarterfinals with a comefrom-behind win over teammate Jankulovski 5-7 7-5 61, ultimately losing to Oleksiy Shestakov (UKR) 6-4 76(3). The doubles event again saw success for Ozolins & Djakouris who reached the final had to forfeit the match due to Ozolin’s injury. Meanwhile, the girls concluded the tour in style, with four team members reaching the final. Kanapatskaya & Ristevska went on to win their third consecutive third title, beating Curmi & Farima 6-4 7-5.
For the third week the team moved to Eching, Germany participating at the Bavarian Junior Open. Tennis Europe Junior Tour Rankings - Overall Tennis Europe’s junior ranking system is devised to give a unified overall list that shows the relative strengths of all players, regardless of where they achieved their results or picked up points. A player’s overall total includes points from Tennis Europe Junior Tour 16 and 14 & Under events, plus points earned by players in these age categories who participate in ITF Junior Circuit and professional tournaments, all of which are weighted accor-
ding to their relative strengths. The 14 & Under ranking is still available separately (see next page), as well as being integrated to these overall rankings. For more information on the rankings system, check out the Tennis Europe Junior Tour Rules and Regulations at www.TennisEurope.org. The ‘Race to the Masters’ rankings are also available separately, and include points earned exclusively at Tennis Europe Junior Tour events. Rankings below are as of October 18th 2016.

Tennis Europe Junior Tour Rankings - 14 & Under A strong finish to the season sees Daria Frayman of Russia reclaim the 14 & Under girls' top spot for the third time in six months, thanks to some impressive performances at 16 & under events in Barcelona, where she won two Category 1 doubles and one singles title as the summer drew to a close. A runner-up in Barcelona, Frayman's compatriot Avelina Sayfetdinova crashes into the Top 10 at #6, leapfrogging Oksana Selekhmeteva to become the
Russian #2. There is greater movement at the top of the boys' rankings, where two of the Junior Masters stars champion Radu Papoe and finalist Holger Rune - both break into the Top 10. They are led by another new entry, Vitek Horak of the Czech Republic, who reached his third final of the season at the recent 16 & Under Sarajevo event. Full ranking lists can be found at www.TennisEurope.org. Rankings below are as of October 18th 2016.
