Tennis Europe Annual General Meeting in Budapest A record number of member nations were in attendance for Tennis Europe’s 44th Annual General Meeting, which was hosted by the Hungarian Tennis Association in Budapest from 22-24 March. A packed agenda ensured that the 112 delegates from 42 European nations were busy throughout the meeting, at which Tennis Europe President Vladimir Dmitriev presented a strong financial result for 2017 and introduced a new business strategy for the organisation. The first day’s Open Session saw International Tennis Federation President David Haggerty provide an update of ITF matters before chairing an open and extensive debate between all member nations on the proposals for reforms to the Davis Cup. Following that, detailed information about the new ITF Transition Tour was given. The session continued with the unveiling of Tennis Europe’s new business strategy, which was presented by Chief Executive Officer Thomas Hammerl. He presented a strong campaign to strengthen and support the 50 European national federations, which was described as the primary aim of the new leadership of Tennis Europe.

The new strategy for 2018-2023 will see Tennis Europe focus heavily on three key pillars: Competition, Development and Promotion. A major priority will be a renewed emphasis on development, working in close cooperation with the ITF. The organisation will continue to upgrade its flagship competitions and the Tennis Europe Junior Tour, while also launching new initiatives to boost participation. The new strategy received the backing of the assembly, who were able to provide further input and feedback at interactive working group sessions.

Tennis Europe Strategy 2018-2023 Tennis Europe’s newly-announced business strategy is the result of a comprehensive review and audit of the organisation’s activities, priorities and obligations, carried out in 2017 in conjunction with Reflection Marketing under the supervision of the President and Board of Management. The investigative process included consultations with a panorama of stakeholders, including staff and Board members, tournament organisers, national tennis associations and the International Tennis Federation, amongst others. The resulting strategy is devised to be consistent with that of the ITF and aligns with the successful 2017 election manifesto of President Vladimir Dmitriev. The review findings showed that Tennis Europe’s activities clearly fell into three main categories, taken as ‘pillars’ on which the new strategy is based: Competitions, Development and Promotion. As a result, a long-term ‘360º’ strategy has been introduced, which will significantly boost Tennis Europe’s

activities in all three pillars. The regional association will substantially increase its involvement in development, working closely with the ITF. It will also work to strengthen its current tournament portfolio, particularly in relation to the flagship events and the Tennis Europe Junior Tour. The approach also includes plans to launch promotional programs aimed at boosting participation across the continent. In the first phase of the implementation of the new strategy (2018-2020), the organisation will place a primary focus on development. More precise information will be published in due course. Tennis Europe’s Chief Executive Officer Thomas Hammerl explained, “Tennis Europe’s new strategy was unveiled at the 2018 Annual General Meeting in Budapest, where member nations were able to shape the policy and unanimously supported the proposed focus areas. The goal of the strategy is not just to boost our organisation, but also to provide increased benefits and representation for all 50 of our member nations.”

2018 ITF/Tennis Europe Development Championships Players from the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia dominated the ITF/Tennis Europe 14 & Under Development Championships, winning 7 of the 8 available titles at the unique two-week event in Antalya, where it was hosted by the Turkish Tennis Federation. A closed tournament comprised of two consecutive Category 2 Tennis Europe Junior Tour events for invited players from ITF Tier 1 nations, the Development Championships saw a total of 22 boys and 20 girls in action. Aleksandra Simeva was the undoubted star of the tournament, claiming both singles and doubles titles (alongside Jana Stojanova) at both events. The compatriots faced off in the singles final in Week 1, with top seed Simeva conceding just five games on her way to victory. In Week 2, Iulia Gherman of Moldova upset the form book, coming back from a set down to post a 5-7 6-4 6-3 win over Stojanova. Sadly for her, she lasted just one round longer, beaten in the semi-finals by fourth seeded Suana Tucakovic (BIH). In her semi, Simeva had decisively beaten Divna Ratkovic (MNE), who had been the only player to take a set from her the previous week, and was in no mood to concede another as she downed Tucakovic 6-2 6-4. Simeva’s compatriot Kalin Ivanovski got within a whisker of repeating her feat in the boys’ events, sweeping the singles and doubles (teaming with Boris Mrkev) in Week 1, and winning the singles again in the second week. His opponent in both finals was Moldova’s Maxim Cazac. Both events proved to be remarkably similar: in each event the two singles finalists

ITF Development Officer for Europe Vitor Cabral with boys’ champion Kalin Ivanoviski (MKD).

progressed to their showdown with relative ease only to see Ivanovski dismiss the second seed for the loss of just one game. Both players will see healthy rises in their Tennis Europe Junior rankings when the lists are updated on Tuesday. Week 2 saw a surprise in the doubles, as local players Cem Atlamis & Atakan Karahan posted a shock win over the top seeds and winners of Week 1 Ivanoviski & Mrkev in the quarterfinals. They followed this up with wins over the third and fourth seeds – coming back from a set down in the final against Mihailo Popovic & Matija Samardzic (MNE) to become the only players from a nation other than Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia to claim a trophy. Alongside the first week of the tournament, a 12 & Under training camp was held in Antalya. The players

2018 ITF/Tennis Europe Development Championships then had the opportunity to taste life on the Tennis Europe Junior Tour, as they went on to compete at the GD Tennis Cup. The Development Championships were first held in 1996 and was devised to give leading players from developing tennis nations the opportunity to travel to compete at Tennis Europe Junior Tour events against players of a similar standard. Over the years, players such as Victoria Azarenka, Simona Halep, Grigor Dimitrov and Marcos Baghdatis have been amongst those to benefit from participating in the event. The ITF Development Officer for Europe, Vitor Cabral, attended both tournaments and commented, “It was

very important for me to witness the full event, getting the necessary in-depth experience to evaluate the potential impact of this programme. Also, this was a privileged opportunity to connect to coaches of different nations and get their perspective on many important subjects related to development. The organization was excellent, with good quality and availability of courts and top-level accommodation, catering to all the needs of the teams. This is a great opportunity for the players to compete, and also for selection to the 14 & Under Touring Team. The 12 & Under training camp was also a great success, providing the players perfect preparation for the 12 & Under tournament held in the 2nd week. It is clearly an excellent programme that we will probably expand and develop further in 2019.

Tennis Europe and KNLTB launch Padel Nations Cup In 2017, Tennis Europe responded to increasing demands from its constituent member nations for greater involvement in Padel Tennis with the creation of the Padel Task Force, which has since overseen research on the sport’s fastest-growing offshoot and delivered several key recommendations. The research found that while many countries were keen to activate Padel, 12 of Tennis Europe’s members currently include Padel to the activities of their national tennis federations, including France, Italy, Netherlands and Belgium. At the Tennis Europe Annual General Meeting in Budapest, and with the endorsement of the International Tennis Federation, the assembly was informed of plans to become more active in this field in order to coordinate pan-European projects, to support the national federations that have requested assistance, and to provide a Padel platform for our member nations. One of the first proposals of the Padel Task Force to be adopted is the creation of the ‘Padel Nations Cup’, a team event for European countries that are active in Padel Tennis.

1st Padel Nations Cup

The inaugural event will be held in Nijmegen, Netherlands, from August 20th-25th, where it will be hosted by the Royal Dutch Lawn Tennis Association (KNLTB). An invitational event, all players will be accommodated at the official hotel and will receive hospitality from the organisation.

The event will be played at the TPV Dukenburg club in Nijmegen, with an additional show court due to be placed in one of the busiest squares of the city centre, ensuring the best possible promotion for this relatively new sport and its players. The tournament format will see all teams play matches on all days. Beginning with a round robin format for groups of three or four teams, the group winners will subsequently be placed together to fight for positions 1-4, while the runners up will battle for positions 5-8, and so on. Tennis Europe member nations can enrol a team by sending an email to padel@knltb.nl. Team nominations can be made later (deadline to be confirmed), and will consist of 2-3 men, plus 2-3 women. Friday August 25th will additionally see the KNLTB and Tennis Europe organise a one-day conference for all member nations to share information about Padel. The programme will include topics such as ‘Activation of Padel by Tennis Federations’, ‘How to Start Education of Padel Coaches’, ‘Good Practices of Club Activations’, and many more. Attendance is free of charge, and further information will be sent to member nations in due course.

Job Opportunity

Tennis Europe is currently looking for a Padel Manager to join the organisation from July 2018. Click here for more information.

12 & Under Tennis Europe Junior Tour – 2019 Restructure Tennis Europe is delighted to announce the completion of a detailed review of the 12 & Under Tennis Europe Junior Tour. The organisation is now ready to implement changes to the Tour to ensure that the junior game is ideally structured and operates in the optimal way to provide appropriate opportunities for all current and future players. Tennis Europe has responded to the need to diversify the opportunities available for players and organisers of 12 & Under events. By establishing different levels of hospitality and offering more matches for our young players through innovative formats, we will boost the geographical distribution of tournaments. More nations will be able to create events, while existing tournaments are able to maintain (or even boost) their stature. In a competitive marketplace with new commercial entities offering international tennis playing opportunities, the dynamism of the Tennis Europe Junior Tour’s 12 & Under age group is key to its success.

Surveys were conducted to canvass the opinions of national associations, tournament organisers, referees, players and parents. At the 2017 Tennis Europe Junior Tour Conference, the 12 & Under Tour was discussed extensively by participants, and a consultative Coaches’ Working Group was also formed. The Tennis Europe Junior Committee has evaluated this data, and thoroughly investigated the major issues facing organisers and competitors. Their findings led to a Tennis Europe Board of Management decision and subsequent announcement of the new structure at the 2018 Tennis Europe Annual General Meeting in Budapest, Hungary. As a result, from 2019 onwards the 12 & Under Tennis Europe Junior Tour will implement two tournament categories instead of the one that is currently in place. The table below further highlights the current structure as has been in place from 2000-2018 and the changes that will be carried out when the new structure is introduced from 2019 onwards.

Development Officer visits Tennis Ireland Tennis Ireland was delighted to welcome to Ireland, ITF Development Officer for Europe, Mr. Vitor Cabral this week. During his visit, Vitor engaged with the Tennis Ireland staff, meeting them over 2 days, to hear of the progress Tennis Ireland is making and to provide input into future projects and plans. The visit also focused specifically on how the ITF and Tennis Europe will be able to assist in the implementation of these plans. The areas of discussion included Facility Development, Coach Education, Growing Participation, Player Support, Special Projects and Tennis Ireland’s soon to be launched Strategic Plan for Tennis in Ireland. A meeting was also held with the new Chief Executive of the Olympic Council of Ireland, Peter Sherrard, to discuss areas of interest relating to support for our current top players, our emerging talent and coaches. Vitor also visited Sutton, Portmarnock and Malahide Tennis Clubs and was clearly impressed, not only with the facilities, but the activities taking place during his visit. Speaking about the visit, Richard Fahey, Chief Executive of Tennis Ireland said, “We were delighted to welcome Vitor to Ireland this week. Since my appointment I have made the development of closer relations with the ITF a priority and I’m glad to say that the ITF, under the leadership of Dave Haggerty, have significantly improved the

support and assistance available to Federations. I also recently met with Luca Santilli, Director of Development for the ITF, and was really impressed with his commitment to supporting smaller nations through the provision of guidance and financial support”. Vitor outlined, “It was a priority for me to come to a nation like Ireland, which has really started to engage more with the ITF and the assistance programmes that are available. Ireland as a tennis nation has significant potential, in my view, and I was particularly pleased to see that their future plans clearly align with those of the ITF. A good example of this was the recent renewal of the Gold Level for Coaches Education where Ireland are one of just eighteen countries in the world to have achieved this quality standard.”

S2A Project Concludes “Developing Sport Administration in Europe is a process in the making and we should be proud to have pioneered some offers during the S2A-Sport project. The interest from the sector has clearly been demonstrated and together we have developed a solid foundation. The time is now for us all to work on next steps towards sustainability and future actions.” It is with this message that the S2A Sport partners, including Tennis Europe, closed the 30-months EU-funded project.

Competitors will be allowed 60 seconds from the time they walk on court to meet at the net for the coin toss, and then five minutes to warm up plus another minute before the first serve. The ITF has launched a new programme, ‘Empowering Female Leaders’, to improve gender equality in leadership positions within tennis on a worldwide basis through a variety of educational opportunities. Introducing... Joe Beaton As part of our series of interviews in which we meet some of the personalities that make up the Tennis Europe Junior Tour, we spoke to Joe Beaton, organiser of the Category 1 Kungens Kanna & Drottningens Pris event in Stockholm, Sweden.

How long have you been organising the tournament, and what motivates you to do it? KLTK have been organising this event for 117 years, and as a Category 1 Tennis Europe event since 2012. Myself and the Kungens Kanna & Drottningens Pris team all love tennis, and we feel incredibly proud of our event. We aim to inspire the next generation of professional tennis players. As the years go by we see some good results from past participants; if we have been a small part of their ongoing success, then this is all the motivation we need. How many people are involved in the running of the tournament? Our committee is a small group of key people; some are club employees and some club members volunteering. We are generally between 6 - 8 people on this committee. During the event itself, we are grateful to our club members that volunteer and work hard on this event year after year. 80 - 100 are needed for us to execute the tournament appropriately. When do preparations start? With this event, there are always improvements to be made and our team never “shuts off”. The club staff is working continuously year-round, and we have already had our first committee meeting for 2019, and the event volunteers are engaged as from a week before the event. The ‘Kungens Kanna’ (the King’s Pitcher) is one of the world’s longest-running tournaments. Tell us a bit about its history. This event has a long and excellent history we are very proud of. It was first held in 1901 at the initiative of Crown Prince Gustaf, who persuaded his father King Oscar II, to donate the winning trophy. Since then, the Royal Family continues the tradition of giving the first prize of the tournament. In 1950 a prize for women

was added, making it possible to compete for the Drottningens Pris (Queen’s Prize). From the very beginning, the men’s tournament had a very strong reputation around the tennis world, and many of the world’s best players came to Stockholm to attend. For example, in 1908 Arthur W. Gore from Great Britain was the winner and also the Wimbledon champion. Jaroslav Drobny and Bjorn Borg are two more Wimbledon singles champions who also triumphed in the Kungens Kanna. When the women’s tournament began in 1950, it instantly received similar status to the men’s tournament among the world’s elite players. In 1958 Angela Mortimer from Great Britain stood as the winner of the Drottningens Pris. She won three Grand Slam titles during her singles career (French Open, Australian Open, Wimbledon) and was ranked No. 1 in the world in 1961. How do you keep improving your tournament? Over the years we have slowly been adding small improvements, for example, name signs on every court from round 1, live match streaming on four courts from the first round, a players’ party with a magician, the tournament website. This year we extended the main draw to 64 players, this was an improvement we will continue with. We try to make each event a little bit better than the one before, a bit more fun and exciting for the players, coaches, parents and spectators. This year, the Tennis Europe Junior Committee met during the tournament. How important was this for you? It was an honour to welcome the Tennis Europe Junior Committee to Stockholm and to our tennis club. We have enjoyed this collaboration immensely over the years. This was an opportunity for us like all the other years, to show what we can do. It was much appreciated, and we hope to welcome them again shortly.

Introducing... Erika Andreeva & Nadezda Khalturina Erika Andreeva and Nadezda Khalturina have established themselves as one of the leading doubles partnerships on the Tennis Europe Junior Tour, winning three tournaments together, including the Cat.1 Kremlin Cup earlier this year. We spoke to the young Russians about their recent run of form…

Congratulations on winning the Category 1 Kremlin Cup! How did it feel to win a big doubles title in your own country? EA: Thank you! In your country, you are always very excited to play, and a little nervous, so it is doubly nice to win at home and please your fans. Erika, Tell us a bit more about yourself. When did you start playing? EA: I was born and live in Russia, in a big Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk. It’s at a distance of 4000 km from Moscow! I first came on court at 5 years old. My first tournaments started when I was 6 years old and since then I have never stopped training and playing. Mom, Dad and my younger sister Mirra always help me and support me. My goal is to achieve the highest results in tennis. To do this, I train a lot and gain experience in tournaments. Nadezda, 18 times, you have been either winner or finalist in many different countries in doubles events. What’s the secret to this success? Tell us a bit more about your background… NK: I really love to play doubles because I like teamwork, also because I like to volley. As for myself, I was born in Moscow. Now I live in Moscow Region with my parents and my sister. Recently I have moved to China to train with Carlos Rodriguez. Did you enjoy this winning run? EA: Nadia and I played 4 tournaments together and won 3 tournaments in a row. So, when we play the same tournaments, we are happy to play in doubles. Unfortunately, at Les Petits As Mondial Lacoste our winning streak of matches ended. NK: I enjoy playing with Erika because she is a good player, and also as a doubles partner. We played together on 4 tournaments and 3 times we were the winners.

Why do you think you combine so well in doubles? EA: A doubles game is not only a technical and physical opportunity. It is important to have a good relationship with your partner. I can say that we have a fighting atmosphere on the court. We are friends on the court and outside the court, we do not put any pressure on each other, only support each other. This is the success of our partnership. NK: Before the Kremlin Cup we didn’t play doubles together for long time, so in the first matches we were trying to achieve a teamwork and good connection. But with every next match we were playing better and better. I think that we had a good game together. She has a really good serve, so after her serve I can finish the point with a volley. You both have great results in singles and doubles. Which do you prefer to play? What are the biggest differences that you see between them? EA: Of course, singles is always my priority. A doubles game in the tournament for me is always a chance to relax, to enjoy the game and this is a special drive when you play without stress. In a singles match I’m counting only on myself, you cannot undo the stress and strain for two, but you do not divide the victory, it’s all mine! NK: I like to play both but for me more important are singles matches. Doubles is also important but it’s more fun for me. In singles you are alone and you should do everything by yourself. And in doubles, even if it’s not your day, your partner can help you to win the match. Are you planning to play more tournaments together? EA: Of course, if there is such an opportunity, we will definitely play as a team. I think that together we can get some more excellent results. NK: For sure I would like us to play more tournaments together!

With this philosophy (carried by Patrick Mouratoglou himself) in mind, we’re working to bring the best out of people that are all different. Some of our core principles are to focus on strengths rather than on weaknesses, and showing up at every practice as if it was a competitive match.

Spotted at the academy

news

“At the Academy, every player is a project on its own.“

With the European swing about to kick off at Monte-Carlo, plenty of top ATP players came over to the Academy in April to get some clay-court practice. The likes of Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev, Lucas Pouille, Tomas Berdych and David Goffin were seen sharing the court before plenty of marveling eyes — those of the Academy’s youngsters.

Still on his way to recovery, Andy Murray also spent a week practicing and taking advantage of the Academy’s sports medicine center. The climax of his stay was reached when a court was officially named after him in presence of Patrick Mouratoglou and more than a hundred student-athletes!

Every week of the year, you will be able to make the most of a wide range of options. For those of you who seek match play and competition, our intensive camp with tournaments (consisting in a minimum 15-day ultra intensive tennis camp meant for competitive players of all levels, from 11 years old onwards) is tailored-made for you.

Tennis Europe Junior Tour Rankings - Overall Tennis Europe’s junior ranking system is devised to give a unified overall list that shows the relative strengths of all players, regardless of where they achieved their results or picked up points. A player’s overall total includes points from Tennis Europe Junior Tour 16 and 14 & Under events, plus points earned by players in these age categories who participate in ITF Junior Circuit and professional tournaments, all of which are weighted according to their relative strengths. The 14

& Under ranking is still available separately (see next page), as well as being integrated to these overall rankings. For more information on the rankings system, check out the Tennis Europe Junior Tour Rules and Regulations at www.TennisEurope.org. The ‘Race to the Masters’ rankings are also available separately, and include points earned exclusively at Tennis Europe Junior Tour events. Rankings below are as of Tuesday 24th April.

LINES YOUR GAME. IN YOUR HANDS. THE HEAD TENNIS SENSOR Back in January HEAD launched the next big innovation in Tennis. The HEAD Tennis Sensor powered by ZEPP fits seamlessly into most HEAD tennis racquets and comes with a free Android and IOS app that allows tennis players to analyze their every move on the court, track their performance and compare their stats with friends or rivals. The HEAD Tennis Sensor offers four unique modes: play, train, compete and 3D serve. PLAY mode allows users to monitor every shot, tracking information on ball speed, spin, sweet spot and more. In TRAIN mode, players can improve their game using a growing database of exercises provided by the HEAD coaches. Players can also challenge up to three rivals in COMPETE mode, comparing their performances in singles and doubles matches. Additionally, the animated 3D SERVE mode helps players improve their serves by analyzing swing and sweet spot. The intuitive user interface of the HEAD Tennis Sensor app was developed in partnership with ZEPP, an expert in sensor technologies and app design. The HEAD Tennis Sensor is compatible with a wide range of HEAD Graphene XT and HEAD Graphene Touch racquets. It’s also water repellent and equipped with the latest Bluetooth standard technology.

Learn more about the HEAD Tennis Sensor or check out the full list of compatible racquets at www.head.com/sensor
