Tennis Europe Coaches Conference in Minsk The 2019 Tennis Europe Coaches Conference took place from 22-25 May in Minsk, where it was hosted for the first time by the Belarus Tennis Federation. This year’s event was the 11th edition of the ‘Specific Theme Conference’, a biennial two-day meeting focusing on a particular topic. For this edition, Tennis Europe chose the issue of ‘National Training Centres.’ The host federation was able to showcase the facilities at its new National Tennis Academy, which is one of the driving factors behind Belarus’ many recent successes on the junior and professional circuits. The meeting itself was opened by Tennis Europe’s Professional Tennis Committee Chair Allar Hint and saw Dermot Sweeney of the International Tennis Federation present an overview of the ITF’s National Training Centre and Facility Programme, as well as a selection of best practices and national showcases from around Europe. The Programme encourages member nations to apply for funding to maintain or extend national training centres, with the aim of increasing facilities and encouraging participation. Also among the line-up of expert speakers were Carl Maes, coach to former world #1 Kim Clijsters and current Director of the Clijsters Academy, renowned coaches Cyril Genevois (FRA), Garry Cahill (IRL), Piotr Unierzyski (POL) and Demetris Herodotou (CYP), plus ITF Development Officer for Europe Vitor Cabral. Cahill and Herodotou were joined by Portuguese Davis Cup Captain Rui Machado during the Nations Showcase. Mr. Cabral commented, “The Specific Theme Conference is a great opportunity to connect with delegates from the federations about very precise topics. In devising the programme, we were also keen to touch areas in which we have development projects. The National

Tennis Europe Coaches Conference in Minsk Training Centre is a very interesting topic and I am particularly happy with the exchanges and discussions we had these two days. I speak on behalf of all the delegates when I say I was also very impressed with the facilities that the Belarus Tennis Federation provided us. We were able to visit a number of top-level venues that gave the conference a very high level of quality. I would like to thank Anton Yuspa and all the staff of the Belarus Tennis Federation and the Belarus NOC for their extraordinary support, and I hope that we achieved our goal of promoting tennis in the country”. Belarus Tennis Federation General Secretary Anton Yuspa said, “It has been an honour for us to host the Tennis Europe Coaches’ Conference. These were very productive, informative and useful days for the representatives from European tennis family in Minsk. The topic of National Training Centres is very important now due to the ITF recognition program currently taking place. I’m sure that we need to share experiences at such important international forums as this conference in order to move forward in the development of the Eu-

ropean tennis. Once again thank you very much to the all participants, speakers and Tennis Europe for coming to Belarus and this opportunity to show our wonderful capital - Minsk in the time before the II European Games that will open the doors for the European Olympic family in the next month.” The event was streamed live on YouTube [Day 1 | Day 2] by the host federation, and is still available for those wishing to catch up.

Tennis Europe is pleased to report an agreement between the sport’s governing bodies which restores ranking points for professional players competing in entry-level tennis events. Tennis Europe works with its 50 member nations to sanction, manage and support almost 600 ITF World Tennis Tour professional tournaments for men and women with a total prize money fund of approximately $12 million each year.

For tournaments to increase from 32-player to 48-player Qualifying Singles Draw sizes, the integrity implications of moving from seven to eight-day events were fully discussed with the Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU). The TIU recognise the benefits of a balanced calendar that provides additional playing opportunities, which along with other measures, will contribute to an improved integrity environment for players.

The press release issued by the ITF reads as follows:

To provide continuity to players, ITF ranking points will be awarded in $15,000 and $25,000 qualifying rounds and a player’s ITF ranking will continue to be valid for acceptance purposes after ATP or WTA ranked players. Three reserved places in $15,000 tournaments for ITF top 100-ranked juniors will continue to facilitate entry into professional tennis for the best-performing players at junior level.

“The ITF (International Tennis Federation) has today announced an agreement with the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) and the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) to optimise the structure of men’s and women’s professional tennis. This will provide additional competitive opportunities and a clear and fair pathway for talented players. The agreement includes the allocation of ATP and WTA ranking points at $15,000 ITF World Tennis Tour tournaments, additional ranking points at men’s $25,000 tournaments, as well as increased playing opportunities with 48-player qualifying singles draws. Players’ rankings will be updated with the new points allocations on 5 August 2019. These points will be applied retroactively to all tournaments played since August 2018. Updated men’s and women’s ATP/WTA rankings will be used for acceptances into ITF World Tennis Tour events plus ATP Challengers and WTA 125K tournaments beginning the week of 26 August 2019. ATP ranking points are to be awarded according to the following points table (singles and doubles): Semi- Quarter- Round Winner Finalist finalist finalist of 16

The ITF’s agreement with the ATP and WTA has been reached to achieve the key objectives of a clearly defined group of professional players and a structure that allows for smooth mobility. Steve Simon, WTA CEO and Chairman said, “The WTA is pleased to work with the ITF in the shared goal of developing a clear structure and pathway to provide for the competitive opportunities and rewards needed for a Player to transition through the ITF World Tennis Tour in their quest to compete on the WTA Tour.” David Haggerty, ITF President said, “Collaborating further with the ATP and WTA, our goal is to ensure the professional pathway from juniors to professional tennis is fit for purpose. It is vital that players have the opportunity to play and progress and nations can afford to host events in their countries at both professional and transitional levels. These additional reforms to the pathway will further strengthen the new structure introduced in 2019, that in turn will create a true professional group of players, increase playing opportunities at all levels of the game, and help widen the number of nations hosting professional tournaments so that tennis can remain a truly global sport.” Chris Kermode, ATP Executive Chairman and President, said: “We are pleased to have reached this agreement

04

ITF, WTA and ATP deliver optimised Professional Tennis structure with the ITF which we believe will lead to significant enhancements to the player pathway and the way in which the ITF World Tennis Tour links to the ATP Challenger Tour. Structural reform has been necessary as we look to increase opportunities and achieve a balanced calendar for the sport. We will continue to closely monitor the latest changes to ensure that they are working as designed for the players, and for the benefit of the sport as a whole.” In summary: • Allocation of ATP and WTA ranking points across the ITF World Tennis Tour will provide one ranking system for men’s and women’s professional tennis and a smoother transition for players who will move up the system due to their achievements on court. • There will be three reserved places in ITF $15,000 tournaments for ITF top 100-ranked juniors; no reserved places will be offered at any other level. • Doubles acceptance at $15,000 tournaments is amended, to be based on a player’s singles or doubles ranking, whichever is higher, with no requirement to

have been accepted into the Singles competition, and therefore opening up opportunities to more players. Subject to consultation with National Associations and key stakeholders, a new more affordable level of development tournament is currently under review for introduction below the ITF World Tennis Tour, between $15,000 tournaments and the ITF Junior Circuit, to ensure players from as many countries as possible have the opportunity to join the player pathway. These tournaments will offer ITF ranking points and enable all players, including those from college tennis and other pathways, to progress to professional tournaments based on results. The ITF World Tennis Tour is a long-term project to secure the future of professional tennis. The ITF, ATP and the WTA have worked closely to deliver a comparable model for both men and women and will continue to monitor and adjust to ensure the optimal structure is provided. The ITF Board has approved these measures following consultation with the ATP and WTA, Player Representatives, and acknowledging feedback from ITF National Associations, tournaments, coaches and players.

Notes from Tennis Europe A Tennis Europe Regional Meeting will be held prior to the ITF Annual General Meeting in Lisbon, Portugal, on Tuesday 24th September. European Beach Tennis Championships to return to Bulgaria Tennis Europe has announced that the thirteenth edition of the European Beach Tennis Championships will be staged in Bulgaria later this year. The event - which returns to Bulgaria for a fourth time - will be held in Kranevo over a four-day period from 5-8 September, and will be played in the same format as in previous years ahead of a transformation for the 2020 edition. The European Championships is a closed regional championship event on the ITF Beach Tennis Tour, at which players representing Tennis Europe’s member nations compete for men’s, women’s and mixed doubles titles.

This year’s event will also feature not one but two ‘Beach Tennis Championships for Juniors’ side-events. The tournaments will be held prior to the main event (2-4 September) with competitions for players aged 14 & Under and 18 & Under. “We are really looking forward to welcoming the players of the European Championships back to Bulgaria for a fourth time. We’re currently finalising all the plans and want to make sure that this is the best edition yet,” commented Tournament Director Katerina Guenova. Last year’s competition saw a total of 136 players from 21 countries in action. Theo Irigaray & Mathieu Guegano of France backed up their sensational semi-final win over world #1s and defending champions Luca Cramarossa & Marco Garavini to become the first ever non-Italian winners of a men’s European Beach Tennis Championship title. The women’s final was another re-match of a 2017 final, but saw the result reversed as Sofia Cimatti & Flaminia Daina eased past compatriots and top seeds Federica Bacchetta & Giulia Gasparri. At the 18 & Under event, all three gold medals were claimed by Italian teams. The complete list of player nominations will be revealed at tenniseurope.org in due course.

European Senior Club Championships to be held at La Manga Club Tennis Europe has announced that the European Senior Club Championships will return to La Manga Club in Spain later this year. Europe’s premier team event for tennis clubs, the Championships are held for men and women of all age groups, from 35 & Over to 75 & Over, and are open to clubs from all Tennis Europe member nations. Entries are encouraged from all clubs with ambitions of winning a prestigious European title. Priority is given to the winners and runners-up of national club championship events, though additional clubs can also enter, subject to eligibility.

The award-winning destination offers a wealth of facilities including a range of accommodation options, three 18-hole golf courses, fitness, spa and wellness facilities and top class gastronomy. Entries opened on Friday 26th April. For further information about the Championships, please contact Nadja Koran

This year’s event will be held over two weeks: Age groups 35 to 55 & Over will play during the week of 16-21 September, while the most senior age groups (60 – 75 & Over) will compete from 2-7 December.

LINES THE PERFECT SHOT FOR EVERY OCCASION: HEAD LAUNCHES NEW GRAPHENE 360 RADICAL RACQUET SERIES From now on, there is no shot you can’t play: with its unique combination of technology and engineering, HEAD’s new Graphene 360 Radical racquet series is built to adapt to the individual needs and preferences of the versatile all-court player. The secret to the series’ versatility comes from the unique combination of a dynamic string pattern, a tapered beam design, and overall well-balanced specifications, which makes the series the perfect all-round weapon for all-court players. Thanks to the new Graphene 360 technology, the series also provides greater stability and optimized energy transfer resulting in more power and consequently more ball speed. In addition, a new radical design identity with asymmetrical color-blocking of Eruptive Orange und Ash Grey makes these racquets a true eye-catcher. Available in six different models (PRO, MP, MP LITE, S, LITE, PWR), the new Graphene 360 Radical racquet series is sensor-ready and available now at selected retailers and online.
