A frenetic summer of flagship Tennis Europe junior events has seen new European individual and team champions crowned across all age categories This six-week period from the end of June to mid-August saw 240 nation al Summer Cups teams crisscrossing the region, com peting at 34 qualifying groups in 10 member nations In between, 700 of the continent’s top players were also in action at the European Championships, the Tour’s most prestigious event where 13 former and current world #1s feature amongst the previous champions
Double success for Kovackova & Boogaard at the European 14 & Under Championships
Alena Kovackova’s incredible season continued with the Czech player claiming the most important of her seven titles so far - the European 14 & Under girls’ title in Most – thanks to a win over Mia Pohankova in the final The Slovakian had Kovackova on the ropes early on and se riously threatened to dent the Czech’s seemingly imper vious armour taking the first set, but the home support helped lift Kovackova to a 5-7 6-2 6-4 comeback win . In the boys’ draw, unseeded Thijs Boogaard had become the first player from the Netherlands to reach the 14&U final since Paul Dogger in 1985 and was the first ever Dutch champion of this event He scored a comprehen sive 6-3 6-2 win over German Diego Dedura-Palomero in their final As has been tradition in the 14&U and 16&U events, both winners and runners-up receive invitations to compete at the season-ending Tennis Europe Junior Masters in Monte-Carlo from 26th-28th of October

In the match between the teams’ #1 players, Alena Kovackova added another remarkable achievement to her incredible Junior Tour season . Notably a qualifying group was organised in Ar menia for the first time in the history of the competition Teams from Bulgaria, Germany, Hungary, Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia and Türkiye received welcome gifts from the host nation at the opening ceremony in Yerevan, from where fans could also follow the action live online Tennis Europe thanks the Armenian Tennis Federation for this groundbreaking feat and looks forward to bringing the team competitions to more developing tennis nations in future

The Czech Republic has once again proved itself to be Europe’s dominant nation in junior team competitions, winning the girls’ 16 & Under Summer Cups competition played on home soil in Marianske Lazne against Serbia
Spain won the boys’ title in Le Touquet (FRA) with a stun ning win over Italy which included not one, but two comefrom-behind stints for the champs GIRLS
The Italians took a 1-0 lead in the tie as Lorenzo Carboni held his nerve for a 6-2 5-7 6-3 win over Segado Este ve Number-one ranked Landaluce, recent European Jun ior Championships silver medalist, got things back on Summer Cups titles for Czech Republic and Spain G16 winners Czech Republic.
The Czech Republic fielded a most formidable team com prised of Magdalena Smekalova (#39), Lucie Urbanova (#11) and Tereza Valentova (#4) They had come through to the final rounds as qualifying group A winners, with vic tories over Italy and Bulgaria In the final rounds they de feated Poland 3-0 in the quarterfinals, backed up by 2-1 win over Spain in the semis On the day of the finals against Serbia it was their oppo nents, however, who hit the ground running . Teodora Ko stović beat Smekalova in a tight two-set 6-4 7-6(0) win, giving the Serbs a 1-0 lead Leveling up the tie, the topranked Czech player in the team turned things around in the second rubber with a straightforward dismissal of Mia Ristic, the eighth-ranked European Junior Champi onships gold medalist To the live rubber then, for which the two Serbs returned to the field of battle . They were met by Valentova, who was joined by the fresh and nim ble feet of Urbanova . This might have been what made the difference in the end because despite an easy first set, things did get tighter in the second Nonetheless, af ter one hour and twenty-three minutes, the local players were able to post a 6-1 7-5 victory, sealing the match, the tie and the title

The Tennis Europe Academy in Prostejov (CZE) hosted a group of 20 players from 7 member nations Under the watchful eye of former world #5 Jiri Novak and his team, the group of 14 & Under players made final preparations before competing at the European 14 & Un der Championships in Most Supported by the ITF/Tennis Europe Development Pro gramme, national associations from Albania, Bulgar ia, Croatia, Kosovo, Malta, Slovenia and Ukraine all sent squads to Prostejov, where the Tennis Europe Academy has been based since 2019 This was the first occasion that the Academy was offered as a training base prior to the flagship Championships, and attracted several of the Tour’s top players, among them recent Summer Cups semi-finalist Ziga Sesko (SLO) and Ukrainian #1 Polina Kuznietsova, a three-time run ner-up on Tour so far in 2022 They tried to acclimatise to the conditions in Czech Re public before launching their European Championship campaigns the following week Tennis Europe hosts special Training Camp
We spoke to her to find out more about her motivations and the long-term aims of this important new working group
Well, compared to a lot of other people, my beginning as a play er is a bit different. I come from a different environment. I used to be a little girl with a disability, and I couldn’t play high-level sports. I was never raised to be a professional athlete, I knew I wasn’t made for it, even if I’ve always loved sports. As my dis ability started getting worse, I got to the point that I couldn’t run or walk anymore. I was feeling really down, but somehow, I found out about wheelchair tennis. I saw in this sport a way to reinvent myself and come back to the community. It was a really good way for me to be part of society. I never planned to be a champion or to be a leader, but then I built a career, and I ended up liking it. Once that happened, I wanted others to have the same chanc es as I did. Not only those with disabilities, but also little girls. I believe there is still a lot of discrimination in sports. Even though there are more and more girls picking tennis, there are so many things you can’t see as a little girl. For example, the lack of female coaches, female leaders, and the way we think about female sports in general. I’m now a mother of two little girls, 8-year-old twins, and I want them to choose the sport they want. I want them to be able to perceive sport as any body, to feel they are welcomed.
Since I ended my career back in 2010 after the US Open, I’ve been working in project management and strategy in all kinds of fields, but I’ve focused a lot on diversity and inclusion. When I’m not helping my husband with our bakery, I am the vice president of the French Tennis Federation, a Board Member at Tennis Europe, a speaker, and a writer.
There are many valid reasons behind this. Some women just don’t want to tour, especially when they want to have a
Here at Tennis Europe, we are advocates. We advocate in front of our member nations, the ITF and the entire tennis ecosystem. But that’s the only thing we can do, advocacy. Saying we are here to change the world is very complicated. However, we can change the narrative. If anything of what I’m doing could make something better, that would be to have more women in coaching positions. Not only women coaching little girls, but women coaching every body. Secondly, I want to inspire other women to take leadership roles in different governing bodies. If we were to look at the board of Tennis Europe, we could see that progress has been made, there are women on the board too. Yet, in general, women are several things. Take me, for instance, I’m involved in the French Tennis Federation, Tennis Europe, the ITF, I’m a mother and I work. It’s just not possible to be everything at the same time. And I al ways have this feeling like I’m not doing enough. That is not right

Why do you think there are not that many female coaches?
You had extraordinary results while playing tennis and as mentioned, you’re now the Vice President of the French Tennis Federation. How did this sport change your life and why did you want to stay in the world of tennis?
Tell us a bit about your background… I’m Florence Alix-Gravellier, I am from France, but currently living in London. I am a former wheelchair tennis player. I’ve been world number one in doubles and two in singles and I won two bronze medals at the Paralympic Games in Beijing.
In 2021, Florence Alix-Gravellier was elected to the Tennis Europe Board of Management and quickly took on the role of Chair of the new ‘Gender Equality in Tennis’ committee
Is this why you wanted to chair the Gender Equality in Tennis Committee? It is, yes. I feel like it’s in my DNA, to fight for diversity and a more open society. I think we are on the right track. I see that men are changing, and they want to do more as well, but just saying things is not enough. We have to act; we have to change mindsets and the way we think about sports. We even have to change the way we talk to each other. What are some of your main goals for this Committee?

The second thing is that there are fewer women in sports, in general. Women and men are 50-50 of the global population, so there should not be anything wrong with having the same number of women as men playing tennis. That is an aspect we need to work on from a young age. You need to show little girls that there are many female coaches out there, otherwise they don’t see it as a career opportunity. The last thing and that’s where I believe we can act the most, is that we don’t appoint women for strong positions. They just don’t get the jobs. When Andy Murray started training with Amélie Mauresmo, everyone was shocked and confused. He is definitely one of the champions of diversity and we need to praise him for it. Two of the key projects Tennis Europe has are the 14&U Development Championships and the 12&U Training Camp. In the past few years, it has been strongly encour aged that female coaches be part of the national teams. Have you seen promising results so far? Yes, for sure. The number of female coaches increased im pressively. [Note: from 0 female in coaches in 2018, the number grew to 4 in 2019 and reached double figures in 2021] At Tennis Europe we need to embrace different cul tures. Diversity is seen one way in Denmark, the other in France, and the same goes for countries in eastern Europe. While Denmark is doing great in terms of equality and di versity, we can’t see that in France. I’m not sure if France is sending any women coaches to 14-16&Under events. We all need to address these issues. How do you think gender equality in tennis compares with other major sports? This inequality is not just in tennis, we see it in every sport. We see it everywhere. It’s the way we look at people around us, the way we perceive power and the way you should lead an organization. We’re being given male examples most of the time. For hundreds of years, being a woman meant caring for the household, the children. It’s the same for someone with a disability, or for people of color. In terms of ethnicity, we don’t have much diversity either. With such a long history of domi nation and imperialism, people find it so hard to change their mindset. They will, though. Thankfully we have people like Ka mala Harris and Michelle Obama. People like all these wom en, either Asian, black, or Hispanic, who are fighting their way through the top. It’s not a question of pushing people away from the table, it’s about enlarging the table. That is some thing the Obama family said. We need to take things step by step. Let’s go back to tennis, if tomorrow we have more wom en involved, a bigger variety in terms of gender, sexual orienta tion, and race, we’ll have more participants. We need to make every single kid feel welcome, no matter the sport, no matter the background. How important do you think taking things step by step is? Is that the key?

Men coaches are travelling, and their families are at home, but you don’t see anybody judging or asking them anything about it. But when a woman is in that position, everybody asks – how do you do with your kids? No body ever asks that to a male athlete or coach. I also get that question, and I tell people, well, they do have a father, we are very well organized and that’s our choice as a family.
Nobody’s been to the top of Everest without reaching base camp. There are also major breakthroughs that can be made, and recently we have witnessed many. As I said before, what Andy Murray did by hiring Amelie Mauresmo. The London 2012 Games had great importance for people with disabil ity. The world of politics changed when Barack Obama was elected president, and so on. Part of the responsibility comes from big organizations, like the ITF, the Grand Slams, and Ten nis Europe. It’s also about us taking seriously the responsibility that is ours and making the best out of it. What can I do for the world to get better? That is a question we need to ask our selves. We won’t see the result immediately, but that doesn’t matter. Just do it. What progress do you hope will have been made by tennis in five years in terms of gender equality?
A very important person helped her to regain the selfassurance and strength when stepping on the court: Patrick Mouratoglou, being her head coach since April 2022. “He had the confidence, that I am still able to win titles, he sees many things and it is really good to have a great connection with the coach, because you can improve so much” Halep said after winning her 24th WTA title in Toronto.
Once more and after a tortuous calf injury in 2021, the Romanian came to a turning point in her career this year.
Two special moments on the Centre Court of the Canadian Open in Toronto: Last Sunday Simona Halep won her first title since she began working with coach Patrick Mouratoglou, resulting in her return to the Top 10 in the WTA singles ranking. On the same day and on the same court Patrick Mouratoglou’s protégé Coco Gauff won the doubles competition with fellow American Jessica Pegula, claiming World No. 1 in doubles ranking.
With the amazing achievement of reaching the top of the World doubles ranking, Gauff provided the second highlight for mentor Patrick Mouratoglou this weekend. Brenda Fruhvirtova was responsible for the third one!
The Coach himself was obviously really proud and satisfied with the former No.1 of the WTA singles ranking, declaring Halep’s return to the Top 10 as a “milestone” on Instagram.

Coco Gauff claims No.1 in doubles Rising star Coco Gauff reached a huge milestone this weekend as well! With fellow American Jessica Pegula, the promising talent from Florida won the Canadian Open doubles title. That triumph lifted her on top of the World doubles ranking. The 18-year-old is the second youngest player to reach that spot, after Swiss Martina Hingis with 17 years in 1998. “It feels great! Being No.1 is pretty cool, I have no words and I didn’t know it was coming this week” the American, who joined the Mouratoglou Academy at the age of 10, told the press after her victory.
On Sunday Brenda Fruhvirtova reached her 4th ITF title in Danderyd, Sweden. A sensational achievement for the 15-year-old tennis player. The huge talent from Czech Republic won the final against experienced German player Mona Barthel 6:1, 6:3. Fruhvirtova is now listed on position 271 in the WTA singles ranking, the youngest player currently in the Top 300. Greece is the only country which has seen increases across all metrics, most notably in players where the total number of players has risen from 116,500 to 280,000. The total number of coaches has increased by 13% overall, with Macedonia, Romania and Lithuania noting the highest increases.

14 & Under stars debut at Wimbledon
Tournament Director Jamie Baker explained to wimble don com that the players would not only benefit from the early opportunity to compete on grass but would also en joy “the absolute Wimbledon experience ”
The girls’ draw featured an all-Romanian final between Tatu and Soare While her opponent and very good friend off-court was a runner-up at Roehampton, Tatu ticked two things off her bucket list: her first match played on grass and a Wimbledon title When asked about her experience at Wimbledon, she said, “these last few days have been a dream I still can’t believe I have a Wimbledon trophy with my name engraved on it . It was a challenge, playing on a grass court for the first time, and playing the finals against one of my best friends I guess one of the key elements that got me to this point was that I didn’t put too much pressure on myself I was honestly hoping to win at least one match Now I can’t wait to come back for Juniors”
The inaugural 14 & Under Invitational tournament at Wim bledon has been a long time coming As the name sug gests, the tournament had invited the best players from around the world, 16 boys and 16 girls and there was a buzz in the air among the young juniors as they were more than ready for their first Wimbledon experience as players .
