Rune & Lopatetskaya claim European 14 & Under Championship titles Top seed and number one ranked Holger Rune is the new European 14 & Under Champion after a straightset dismissal of second seed Hamad Medjedovic of Serbia on the final day of the event, which was held in Most, Czech Republic. Unseeded Ukrainian Dasha Lopatetskaya upset the Russian number one seed Oksana Selekhmeteva to become the girls’ champion. She was instrumental in this year’s Winter and Summer Cups success for the Ukrainian team, and has now won her biggest individual title. There were no major surprises in the 14 & Under boys’ event, as the top two seeds met in the final. The number one seed, Rune, progressed easily without dropping a set on his way to the final. This was especially impressive as he overcame two in-form seeded players in the quarterfinals and semi-finals, Jack Pinnington-Jones (GBR) and Aristarkh Safonov (RUS) respectively. Rune’s opponent in the final had a slightly more arduous trek on route to the final, being pushed to three sets in the fourth round by the Danish player Elmer Moller and scraping through a tough 7-5 third set battle with unseeded Swede Michael Minasyan in round three. Regrouping well, he defeated number three seed Luca Nardi (ITA) in straight sets to book his place in the final. Sadly, the final was a short-lived experience for the Serb, as Rune came out firing and never let up throughout, posting a 6-2 6-1 victory.

In the girls’ draw the top seeded Russian also made her way to the final after getting off to an easy start in the tournament. She was pushed and had to resort to a third set tiebreak to overcome Italian eleventh seed Lisa Pigato in the quarterfinal. The unseeded Lopatetskaya was burning up the draw, losing just five games on route to the final, and posting not one but two double-bagel victories before the semi-final. There, she met stronger resistance from Belarusian fourth seed Jana Kolodynska, but came through in straight sets nevertheless after a close first set. In the final however, Lopatetskaya was in blistering form, completely shutting out the European #1 for a 6-3 6-2 victory in their first ever meeting.

There were two fairly one-sided doubles finals. Briton Jack Pinnington-Jones is having a great year, having captured three singles and five doubles titles. Teaming again with his compatriot Joel Pierleoni, they easily defeated Daniel Rincon & Carlos Alcaraz Garfia of Spain 6-1 6-3, becoming the first British pair to claim the title in 22 years.

There was some consolation for Selekhmeteva in the girls’ doubles. As top seed, she played with fellow Russian Maria Timofeeva, to dash the hope of locals Daria Vidmanova & Katerina Mandelikova 6-2 6-2. This marks the first time since 2012 that one of the doubles titles at the 14 & under event has not been won by a Czech team.

Skatov & Chwalinksa triumph at the European 16 & Under Championships Timofey Skatov and Maja Chwalinska have been crowned as the winners of the European 16 & Under Championships, which have been held in Moscow for an eleventh consecutive year. It was a relatively easy day at the office for Skatov, backing up his claim to the top spot on the rankings and overcoming third seeded Romanian Nini Gabriel Dica in front of his home crowd. While Chwalinka was tested in the first set, she breezed through the second against unseeded Swede Caijsa Wilda Hennemann. In the boys’ draw, the top seed Skatov proceeded seemingly unhindered right through to the final after having a bye in the first round. He systematically took out his opponents in straight sets - in the second round the Romanian Matei Georgescu, in the third round the Georgian Saba Purtseladze, and in the fourth round Chris Rodesch (LUX) heading into the quarterfinals. There, he had a tougher time against the Pole Wojciech Marek, and was also put to the test in the semi-final against Bulgarian 16th seed Adrian Andreev. His opponent in the final was Romanian Nini Gabriel Dica the number three seed who has had a fantastic year, winning four singles and two doubles titles, and was in fine form, having upset second seeded Czech Dalibor Svrcina in the semi-finals.
Swedish player Hennemann wreaked havoc throughout the draw knocking out seeded player after seeded player on her straight-set giant-killing spree. After a first-round bye, she took out Britain’s Gemma Heath, followed by Slovenian eleventh seed Elena Milovanovic and Finnish eighth seed Oona Orpana. The unseeded Romanian Carmen Manu put up a three-set fight and offered more resistance in the quarterfinals, but another straight set win in the semi-final over Elisabetta Cocciaretto of Italy, secured her spot in the gold medal match. Hennemann showed just why she had made it thus far, pushing Chwalinska to a tiebreaker in the first set. After that, it was a sprint to the finish line for the Pole, as she posted a 7-6(1) 6-0 victory for the biggest win of her young career. There was also a wide array of flags flying on the doubles podium, with winners and runners up hailing from four different countries. Unseeded Moritz Hoffmann & Justin Schlageter of Germany took the title defeating Italians Marco Furlanetto & Michele Vianello, also unseeded, 6-3 7-6(4). In the girls’ doubles top seeded Russians, Daria Frayman and Vlada Koval, were outdone in the final by Viktoriya Kanapatskaya & Anna Kubareva of Belarus 6-2 6-1.

It was all one-way traffic in the final, however, as the local favourite proved too strong for his Romanian opponent. Spurred on by the crowd, and with increasing confidence, Skatov went from strength to strength in his 6-3 6-1 win over his nearest rival in the Tennis Europe Junior Tour rankings.
The girls’ draw was comparatively full of surprises. Top-seeded Czech Denisa Hindova was taken out in the fourth round by Spanish player Gemma Lairon Navarro. She then managed to overcome thirteenth seeded Tennis Europe Junior Masters champion Helene Pellicano of Malta before going down to Maja Chwalinska in the quarterfinals.

Juvan and Piros score European 18 & Under Championship wins The numerous spectators were treated to two high quality title matches on Sunday at the European 18 & Under Championships in Klosters, with Kaja Juvan and Zsombor Piros triumphing to take the Gold medals. The Slovenian beat Marta Kostyuk of the Ukraine 6-3 1-6 6-4 to win the girls’ title, while the Australian Open champion from Hungary won a battle of extremely skilled players against top seed Corentin Moutet 6-4 7-5. In the girls’ final a change of the outcome was looming when Kostyuk fought back with her never-say-die attitude to recover from 2-5 to 4-5 in the final set. But Juvan held her nerve, sticking to a simple strategy: “I only focused on the next point.” She becomes the second titlist from Slovenia after Nastia Kolar, who took the crown in 2011.

The boys’ final matched the quality of the girls’ game. Piros once again displayed his complete and smart all-round game and Moutet his tremendously fast hands. However, as in last year’s final, he had trouble keeping his cool as things weren’t going smoothly. But the young French star fought to the end, saving three match points at 4-5, before eventually having to con-

Despite her disappointment, Kostyuk could leave Klosters happy, as she had won the gold on Saturday in the doubles alongside Viktoriia Dema with a straight sets-win over Jule Niemeier & Lara Schmidt of Germany. Later, the Ukraine anthem was played for a second time as the team was confirmed as the winner of the nations’ trophy. Boys doubles champions Jakub Paul & Damien Wenger (SUI).
gratulate his opponent two games later. “I wasn’t patient enough”, he later conceded. Piros was enormously happy: “It is a very big win for me.” He is the first Hungarian ever to win the crown in the 18 & Under category. Also tournament director Hans Markutt was very satisfied with the event, saying, “I am already looking forward to next year”. The home crowd had reason to celebrate when Jakub Paul & Damien Wenger got the better of Russians Egor Noskin & Alexey Zakharov to claim the doubles title. The Swiss pair had stressed their supporters. In the semi-final, they were trailing 6-7 1-4 versus Marvin Moeller & Henry Squire before they launched an impressive comeback. Now, they are the first Swiss to win the doubles title in Klosters since Roman Valent & Stéphane Bohli back in 2001. Overall, the host nation has been very successful in this altitude: this was their 24th medal in 21 editions of the tournament in the mountain resort of Klosters.

Russia, France and Czech Republic score Summer Cups wins Russia emerged as the big winner at the European Summer Cups, claiming both the girls’ 16 and 18 & Under titles at last month’s final rounds. Hosts France won the boys’ 18 & Under championship, while the boys’ 16 & Under trophy was taken home by the Czech Republic. Russia, France and Italy highlighted their might, being the only nations to be represented in all four events at both the boys’ and girls’ 16 and 18 & Under finals. Their strength was further displayed by their subsequent performances, with at least two of those nations, if not all three, placed in the top four in the final standings in three of the four events. A total of 96 national teams of players had earlier taken part in the qualifying rounds of Europe’s outdoor team events. The 16 & Under European Summer Cups also serve as the regional qualifying competition for the Junior Davis & Fed Cup by BNP Paribas, with the top five teams advancing to join hosts Hungary at the final rounds in Budapest last week.

Girls 18 & Under champions Russia.
Boys’ 18 & Under - La Rochelle, France France won a fifth title overall in this age category, overcoming Russia in a tight 2-1 tussle, having earlier defeated both Portugal and Belgium 3-0 to progress comfortably to the final. Russia’s approach to the final was only slightly more complicated, with an early 3-0 win over Hungary followed by a 2-1 defeat of Great Britain.

Russia came out on top again this year to claim their third win in a row, and seventh overall, in this event. They came through to the final stage with a win in all ties and only giving up two rubbers. Elena Rybakina was instrumental for the Russian team, winning all her singles rubbers as well as doubles, partnering Anastasia Kharitonova. Trouncing Romania in the first round 3-0, and with a 2-1 win in the semi-finals over the Czech Republic, the Russian team met the Italians in the final. They had come through in a sensational form, overcoming Spain and then Belarus without dropping a match in either tie. The final went the way of the Russians, claiming victory 2 to 1, and leaving the Czech Republic to overpower Belarus in the playoffs for third and fourth place.

In the final, Artem Dubrivny defeated Matteo Martineau to put Russia ahead, but recent European Junior Championships silver medallist Corentin Moutet got the French even at 1-1 with his own straights sets win over Alexey Zakharov. As the four players stepped back on court for the deciding doubles, it was the French who were able to assert their dominance and prevail yet again in straight sets. In the bronze medal play-off, Belgium defeated Britain 2-0 .

Girls’ 16 & Under - Budapest, Hungary In one of the few draws that fell into place for the seeded teams, we saw the top four face off in the semi-finals, with Russia defeating Hungary 3-0 in the first semi-final, and France overcoming Italy in the second by the same score line.

The final was locked at 1-1 after Clara Burel defeated Kamilla Rakhimova in a gruelling three-set win. Number 10-ranked Daria Frayman made light work of Yasmine Mansouri to make things even. The Russians then combined for a straight sets win over the French in the doubles to claim their second win in a row in the event, and their sixth since 2009. This left Italy to do battle with and defeat Hungary for third place.

This was a draw full of upsets, as the number one seeds Romania were taken out in the first round by the eventual champions. Likewise, the third seeded Russians, followed by the second seeded Italians were defeated by Croatia, thus producing a final between two unseeded nations. Jonas Forejtek and fourth-ranked Dalibor Svrcina gave the Czechs an unassailable 2-0 lead after posting wins in their singles matches. Forejtek then teamed up with Jiri Lehecka for a 10-5 championship tiebreak win over Roko Horvat and Admir Kalender to seal a 3-0 win for the Czech team. After suffering defeats at the final hurdle in 2003, 2009 and then again last year, this has been a long-awaited return to victory for the Czechs, who last won this event in 1999. There was some consolation for the second seeded Italians, as they claimed third place in the playoffs with a win over Belgium.

Croatia and Czech Republic claim Nations Challenge by HEAD titles
s Chall
Croatia’s boys’ team and the Czech Republic girls’ team have been crowned as the new summer 12 & Under outdoor team champions of Europe, following a busy two weekends of action that saw participation from 58 national teams. At the boys’ final rounds, which were held at the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy in Biot, southern France, a confident and relatively experienced Croatian team came from behind to recover for a 2-1 win over the Czech Republic, defending its title in the process. Czech #2 Petr Vojtech got the tie off to the best possible start for the Group B winners, overcoming a lapse in the second set to outlast Patrik Jurina 6-1 0-6 6-2. The second singles match was not nearly as competitive as Dina Prizmic – a veteran of the winning 2016 team – conceded just one game to Jakub Mensik. When the four players duly returned to the court for the deciding doubles rubber, both teams had reasons to feel confident: the Croatians had not lost a match in the whole of the final rounds – a run which included wins over Romania, France and the Netherlands – while the Czech players had already won the 12 & Under Winter Cups by HEAD together earlier in the year. On this occasion though the match was taken comfortably by the Croatian pair, who secured the tie with a 6-4 6-3 win. The victory is Croatia’s second in the eleven-year history of the competition and saw the team block what would have been a sensational double victory for the Czechs, who later in the day emerged triumphant at the girls’ final rounds in Ajaccio. That final turned out to be equally hotly contested. The opening singles match, between the #2 players of each team, provided a fairly routine win for the Czechs over their Belgian opposition, as Krstyna Tomajkova beat Amelia Waligora for the loss of just three games, 6-2 6-1. The second match was a classic though; Sofia Costoulas of Belgium fought hard to recover from a 4-6 first set loss

and stood at the brink of defeat in the second before taking a twelve-game set over Brenda Fruhvirtova. The final set went to the wire as the pair eventually separated by a deciding tie-break, which the Belgian eventually claimed 7-4. The final doubles match was tense, but perhaps the fresh legs of Lucie Havlickova, who joined Fruhirtova to face Costoulas & Waligora made the difference. After edging past the Belgians to claim a 7-4 first set tie break, the Czechs secured a crucial break in the second and sealed the match with a 7-6 6-4 win. Having just failed to become the second nation ever to win both Nations Challenge titles in the same year (following Russia in 2011), the Czechs will be extremely pleased nonetheless, picking up a first title from a total of five final appearances. The win for the Czechs also demonstrates the strength in depth of the country’s 12 & Under squads, with only Havlickova having played on the team that finished as runner-up at the Winter Cups in February.

The team consisted of nine players - four boys and five girls. The boys were Danilo Raicevic (MNE), Photos Photiades (CYP), Tsotne Dzimistarishvili (GEO) and Aleksa Krivokapic (MNE), while the girls were Arina Gamretkaia (MDA), Milena Gevorgyan (ARM), Patricija Paukstyte (LTU), Klaudija Bubelyte (LTU) and Jana Stojanova (MKD). The players and the coaches first met in Duren, Germany on July 29th where they had a short time to train and get to know each other before continuing to the first event of this summer’s tour in Duren. The performances in the first tournament were promising. In the singles events, after losing in the first round of the main draw to the eventual quarter finalist, Danilo Raicevic won the consolation event against the ITF/Asia team member Divesh Gahlot (IND) 4-6, 6-0, 6-1. In the girls doubles event Patricija Paukstyte and Klaudija Bubelyte reached the quarterfinal where they lost to the Korean team BoYoung Jeong & Yeon Woo Ku 6-3 6-0. During the first week, the team showed high professionalism and effort in achieving their goals and getting ready for the second week of Hasselt. The tour duly continued to Hasselt, Belgium where the team posted some more successful achievements. In the singles event, the boys performed particularly well. After winning against his teammate Tsotne Dzimistarishvili 7-5 5-7 7-5 in quarters Danilo Raicevic faced Joel Pierleoni (GBR) in the semi-final and lost 6-1 4-6 6-2. Photos Photiades and Aleksa Krivokapic both reached the 3rd round. In the girls’ event Arina Gamretkaia reached the quarters where she lost to the Canadian Darija Tomashevskaya 6-4 6-2. The Asian team was on a roll, having own their last four tournaments, and took the contest 6-3 6-4. For the third week, the team moved to Renningen/Rutesheim, Germany, to play at the Jugend Cup. Danilo Raicevic underlined his great improvement and reached the singles final where he won an extended battle against the German Max Hans Rehberg 7-5 4-6 6-3. Photos Photiades reached the quarters before losing to the Russian, Robert Korelov 6-3 6-1. In the girls singles, Arina Gamretskaia again reached the quarters and faced the Italian Chiara Fornasieri, losing 6-2 6-3. Aleksa Krivokapic, Patricija Paukstyte and Milena Gevorgyan all reached the 3rd round. Raicevic & Dzimistarishvili reached the semis and lost to the Italians Gabriele Datei & Enrico Lanza Cariccio 6-3 4-6 10-4. The tour finished with the BMW Junior Cup in Regensburg, Germany where the players had some remarkable results. Jana Stojanova in the 12 & Under age group showed a great level to reach both singles and doubles finals. In the singles event after a long and dramatic match, she lost to Cara Maria Mester (ROU) 6-2 5-7 6-2, while in doubles she won the title with her partner Leticia Tarocco (CRO) against Lola Radivojevic (SRB) & Arina Arifullina (RUS) 6-4 6-2. The other players also had some good results. In the boys’ 16 & Under singles, Photos Photiades reached the quarters before losing to the German Sven Thiergard 6-7(4) 6-3 6-2, while Aleksa Krivokapic, Danilo Raicevic and Tsotne Dzimistarishvili all reached the third round. In girls 16 & Under category Arina Gamretkaia again reached the quarters and lost to Russian Anastasia Sizova 7-6(1) 6-2 while Milena Gevorgyan, Patricija Paukstyte and Klaudija Bubelyte also all reached the third round. In doubles, the boys had their highlight where Aleksa Krivokapic partnered Marino Jakic (CRO) to the final, where they were outclassed that day by Germans Benedict Kurz & Nicolas Turtl 6-0 6-0, while the girls’ pairs of Patricija Paukstyte & Klaudija Bubelyte and Arina Gamretkaia & Milena Gevorgyan reached the semis, losing to Nicole Palecek (CZE) & Anastasia Sizova (RUS) and Denise Hrdinkova & Nelly Knezkova (CZE) respectively in champions’ tie breaks. After four very competitive tournaments, team coaches Goran Shevchenko and Darija Deskovic Miskovic concluded that it had been a very successful summer for this year’s team. The trip benefits the players in showing them the importance of a proper diet, improving their game and fitness but also giving the possibility to have a chance to compete against the best players of Europe and the other continents. The tour provided a great opportunity for all the players who will be able to use this experience for their future development.

Italy reasserts dominance at European Beach Tennis Championships Italian teams once again swept the board at the European Beach Tennis Championships in Sozopol, Bulgaria, walking away with all three major titles and adding the three junior titles for good measure. The men’s event saw 2016 champions Luca Cramarossa & Marco Garavini successfully defend their title, with a hard-fought win over top seeded compatriots Michele Cappelletti & Luca Carli, a repeat of last year’s final. Everything hinged on a tight first set tie-break, which the second seeds eventually claimed 9-7 before securing a break in the second set to emerge as 7-6(7) 6-4 winners. The win marked a second and fourth men’s gold for Cramarossa & Garavini respectively, neither of whom have ever lost a final at these championships. For Carli the result meant a third consecutive silver medal to add to his gold from 2012, while Cappelletti also holds four medals, including golds from 2012 and 2015. The bronze medal went to Spanish pair Antomi Ramos & Saulo Tejada, who beat Nicolo Bombini & Alvisa Galli of San Marino 6-0 7-6(4). The all-Italian women’s final produced the match of the tournament, as second seeds Federica Bacchetta & Gulia Gasparri recovered from a second set lapse to eventually overcome top seeded compatriots and defending champions Flaminia Daina & Sofia Cimatti 6-4 4-6 7-6(5). The match was a third consecutive three-set encounter for the champions, who had also dropped sets against Capucine Rousseau & Catherine Henuzet of France in the quarterfinals and Darya Churakova & Irina Glimakova of Russia in the semis. The Russians went on the claim the bronze medal with a straight sets win over Elodie Vadel & Magalie Garnier of France in the play-off match. Bacchetta therefore becomes the first woman to win four European Beach Tennis Championship titles, adding to wins in 2010, 2012 and 2015, while Gasparri – a beaten finalist in the past two editions – claims her first.
For a second straight year, Italian pairs won all six junior and professional European Beach Tennis Championship titles. The mixed doubles event saw further joy for Bacchetta & Garavini as they paired up for a marathon 6-4 3-6 10:6 win over 2016 champions Cimatti & Cappelletti. The junior events, which were inaugurated in 2016, showed that the future remains bright for Italy. Played in a round-robin format, the boys’ event saw Guiseppe Attolino & Mattia Spoto finish ahead of compatriots Marcello Zanon & Gianmarco Palmieri. A similar story emerged in the girls’ singles, where Ninni Valentini & Giulia Trippa edged ahead of Greta Giusti & Camila Spadoni to claim gold. And in the junior mixed event, Valentini & Attolino beat Giusti & Zanon 7-6(5) 6-2 in the final. In total, players from 19 nations took part in this tenth edition of the European Beach Tennis Championships, which were hosted by the Bulgarian Tennis Federation in Sozopol at the Santa Marina Holiday Village for a second consecutive year.
Italy’s winning teams celebrate.

Tennis Development in Norway: a success story In 2015, Norway became the 13th European nation to achieve gold level recognition from the International Tennis Federation (ITF) for its coach education system. Oivind Sorvald, Director of Sports at the Norwegian Tennis Federation (NTF), explains to us how the national association took a great leap forward in recent years...
“The journey began in 2006, with a visit to Miguel Crespo at the ITF offices in Valencia. We were looking to start a new era of coach education in our country and were met with great enthusiasm and support. The ITF provided all kinds of materials and guidelines for how we should proceed. At this early stage, coach education was not even in our budgets, so we began to work on a detailed plan for implementation in Norway. The first steps involved establishing a framework, increasing contact hours with coaches, and educating tutors. By 2010 we were running new Level 1 and Level 2 courses. We established many partnerships, to ensure that we were offering great courses and to help us deliver tutor training and continuous education. These included the Olympic Centre, Oslo Sport University, the PTR and the Confederation of Sport in Norway. By 2015 we achieved the Gold Standard of ITF recognition, and today we have 340 certified coaches, with 95 members of our coaching association. Today, the Norwegian Tennis Federation educates 90% of all coaches through its courses, and runs 2 Level 1 courses, 2 Level 2 courses, 1 Level 3 course, 1 Coach conference and 8 continuous education courses per year. Through the partnership with PTR, we are also able to arrange workshops and conferences with tutors from their staff, and to benefit from external coach developers.”
Play and Stay “Our kids program ‘Tennisskolen’ was launched after some visits to the ITF and LTA in 2006, and in 2007 we signed BNP Paribas as a sponsor for the program. This

Coach Education
partnership gave us a kickstart to focus more attention on grassroots tennis, and ran for three years, during which time we implemented Red, Orange and Green programs in all Norwegian clubs. In 2012, we established a new team tournament format under the program, with a Red Tour, Orange Tour, and Green Tour. This year we also introduced a Yellow Tour, a participation-oriented program targeting players in the 13-19 age group.”
Player Development “Historically, the federation had focused mainly on the 16 and over age group, but by 2009 we understood that any new plan for player development must chime with what we say and do in coach education. The new plan starts with the Kids Program, and ends with Davis and Fed Cup teams. We believe that we must do a better job than our competitors, and could not simply play the ‘numbers game’. So, we asked for support and competencies, and we invited coaches from the ITF, LTA, PTR, Belgium and France, in order to learn from them. From 2011 to 2015, the federation built a competency centre for players that wanted and needed more than their clubs could offer, assisted by Carl Maes. Since 2015, the federation has been increasingly focused on national teams, and cooperates with an academy that is responsible for the day to day training. The federation provides technical and tactical screenings, documentation and physical checks. The Norwegian Tennis Federation aims to be a high-tech organization, and over the last year has built an app for players and coaches. We’ve already seen beneficial effects, with our players getting better international results and increasing numbers of players staying in the game.”
© Espen Hildrup
The Future These days we are working on a Long-Term Athlete Development Plan, which will focus on performance and participation. The plan is inspired by Tennis Canada and their success both in top international level and club level tennis. Our goal is to build a culture for the future generations, and make tennis known in Norway as a ‘Sport for Life’.

US Open World number one Rafael Nadal cruised past South African Kevin Anderson 6-3 6-3 6-4 to win his third US Open trophy and sixteenth major title overall at the final Grand Slam event of the season in New York. American Sloane Stephens was in dazzling form throughout the two weeks, and thrashed close friend Madison Keys 6-3 6-0 in their all-American final. Coming off foot surgery and extensive injury lay-off, much has been made of Stephens’ remarkable ascent after having dropped to #957 in the WTA rankings. With the greatest win of her career, she collected a cheque for a cool US$3.7 million and will move back into the world’s Top 20. Nadal played in his third grand slam final of the year, claiming his second and cementing his place as the dominant player atop the ATP rankings. The final weekend proved to be a rewarding climax to a tournament that began reeling from the absence of some of the game’s biggest drawcards. Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Stanislas Wawrinka, Kei Nishikori, Milos Raonic, Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka were just some of the stars that were sorely missed in New York.
THE WOMEN
With both players in their maiden Grand Slam final, it was a battle of nerves (and fitness), won by Stephens.
FAST FACTS FROM FLUSHING MEADOWS IN 2017 Nadal won without facing any top 25 player - the first time that has ever happened in a Grand Slam. South African Kevin Anderson was the first man from his country to make a grand slam final since 1985. Defeat for Roger against Juan Martin del Potro means that the New York crowd is still yet to see a Federer-Nadal encounter. This was the first time since Wimbledon in 1985 that there have been four American women semi-finalists at a major. Entering the tournament at #83, only three other players have ever won a Slam being ranked lower than Sloane Stephens. By virtue of her fourth round appearance and Pliskova’s capitulation one round later to Coco Vandeweghe, Spain’s Garbine Muguruza rises to number one in the rankings, becoming the first female player from her country to hold the top spot since Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario 22 years ago. With Nadal, and now Muguruza, perched atop the ATP and WTA rankings, it is the first time ever that players from Spain concurrently hold the top spots.
She is the first unseeded player to win the U.S. Open since 2009, when Kim Clijsters came back from retirement and pregnancy. This was Stephens’ best performance since having made the semi-finals of the Australian Open in 2013. 30 unforced errors for Madison and just six for Sloane told the story of the match. Although Keys seemed to be hampered by injury, she would not let this be an excuse, as she was outclassed by her best friend on tour. The pair shared a long, warm embrace after the match - encapsulating sportsmanship and friendship in the enduring image of the tournament. There were many upsets in the first week, with newly returned Maria Sharapova being responsible for one of them, claiming the scalp of the second seeded Romanian Simona Halep in a blockbuster first round night session match. Other seeds that fell by the wayside early on included Agnieszka Radwanska and Angelique Kerber, still struggling to find the form that brought her the title and the #1 ranking last year. For all the buzz, Sharapova herself then stumbled in the fourth round losing to 14th seed Anastasija Sevastova.
THE MEN
Nadal’s second Grand Slam win of the year means that he has split this year’s majors 2-2 with Roger Federer. Despite all the talk of the ATP Next Generation, the new stars have still yet to breakthrough at Grand Slam level as Dominic Thiem, Alexander Zverev, Grigor Dimitrov and Nick Kyrgios all failed to live to expectations in New York. Andy Murray’s eleventh-hour withdrawal due to injury opened up the bottom half of the draw nicely. Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta took his brilliant play all the way to his first ever Slam semi-final appearance. And while the Flushing Meadows crowd was eagerly anticipating a Federer-Nadal semi-final showdown, they were yet again prevented from seeing this match-up live in the Big Apple. Federer was taken out in the quarterfinal by his apparent New York nemesis, Juan Martin Del Potro, having also lost to the Argentine in the 2009 final. Del Potro’s
18
US Open run continued, even taking the first set off Nadal in the semi-final, but in the end the Spaniard proved too strong.
Jean-Julien Rojer & Horia Tecau defeated Feliciano Lopez & Marc Lopez in the men’s doubles final, 6–4 6–3.
As much as Nadal may have liked to play his countryman, it was not to be, as South Africa’s Kevin Anderson made his way to his first grand slam final at 32 years of age. In fact, it was the first time he had ever progressed past a Slam fourth round, and was a well-deserved berth after a tough victory over in-form American Sam Querrey and an easy win over giant-killing up-and-comer Borna Coric. The Croatian had earlier upset fourth seed Alexander Zverev and was touted to go far.
JUNIORS
DOUBLES
At almost 37 years of age, ‘Swiss Miss’ Martina Hingis added two more Grand Slam titles to her tally. Teaming with Chan Yung-Jan, she defeated Katerina Siniakova & Lucie Hradecka 6-3, 6-2 in the women’s final. Jamie Murray played with Hingis to beat Chan Hao-ching & Michael Venus 6-1, 4-6 (10-8) in the mixed doubles final. Hingis has now amassed a grand total of 25 Grand Slam titles (5 singles, 13 doubles, 7 mixed). Meanwhile,
There was great news for European junior tennis, as Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk won the girls’ doubles title with Olga Danilovic of Serbia. Kostyuk is a former champion of the prestigious Petits As tournament in France, and adds this junior doubles crown to her Australian Open junior singles crown from earlier in the year. It is also Danilovic’s third junior slam doubles win of the year, having won in Paris and Wimbledon with different partners. The pair defeated Lea Boskovic (CRO) & Wang Xiyu (CHN) 6-1 7-5. In another all-American female singles final, Amanda Anisimova stormed to a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Cori Gauff for her first junior Slam. Wu Yibing (CHN) beat top seed Axel Geller (ARG) in the boys’ singles final 6-4, 6-4. He adds this to the doubles title he won with Hsu Yu-Hsiou of Taiwan, and becomes the first Chinese player to win a junior event at Flushing Meadows.
FAST FACTS A third of European junior elite tennis players have bought a tennis racquet because it was used by a Pro Player they admired.

Tennis Europe Junior Tour Rankings - Overall Tennis Europe’s junior ranking system is devised to give a unified overall list that shows the relative strengths of all players, regardless of where they achieved their results or picked up points. A player’s overall total includes points from Tennis Europe Junior Tour 16 and 14 & Under events, plus points earned by players in these age categories who participate in ITF Junior Circuit and professional tournaments, all of which are weighted according to their relative strengths. The 14
& Under ranking is still available separately (see next page), as well as being integrated to these overall rankings. For more information on the rankings system, check out the Tennis Europe Junior Tour Rules and Regulations at www.TennisEurope.org. The ‘Race to the Masters’ rankings are also available separately, and include points earned exclusively at Tennis Europe Junior Tour events. Rankings below are as of 25th September 2017.

Tennis Europe Junior Tour Rankings - 14 & Under Tennis Europe’s junior ranking system is devised to give a unified overall list that shows the relative strengths of all players, regardless of where they achieved their results or picked up points. A player’s overall total includes points from Tennis Europe Junior Tour 16 and 14 & Under events, plus points earned by players in these age categories who participate in ITF Junior Circuit and professional tournaments, all of which are weighted according to their relative strengths. The 14
& Under ranking is still available separately, as well as being integrated to the overall rankings.
