New champions have been crowned at the Tennis Europe Junior Masters in Reggio Calabria after an intense but friendly weekend in which the Tennis Europe Junior Tour’s leading players faced each other for the last time this season.

Fatma Idrizovic of Serbia was the day’s first winner. After sealing a titanic first set in a tie break, a battle which lasted well over an hour, she accelerated away from Katerina Dimitrova, breaking the Bulgarian twice in the second set to secure a 7-6(5) 6-2 win. The European #6 becomes the first Serbian winner of the girls 14 & Under title and ends the season with a 45/12 win-loss record, which reaped five singles titles including Category 1 wins at both the 14 and 16 & Under level. “It was an amazing final,” she told Tennis Europe. “I played well and I’m so happy that I won.”

wasn’t my best match of the tournament…I am happy to be the champion though; I love it so, so much!” The girls’ 16 & Under final was an all-Croatian battle between the top two seeds, Tara Wurth (#1) and Antonia Ruzic (#2). The pair had met once before on the Tennis Europe Junior Tour and a total of three times in all competitions with Wurth winning on each occasion, but this time Ruzic took the initiative and withstood a spirited fightback from her friend and compatriot in the second set to hold on for a 6-4 7-6(5) win. “I feel great. I am very happy. All of the work that I put in is paying off now,” she smiled. Ruzic becomes the first Croatian girl to win the title since Ana Konjuh in 2011.

Konstantin Zhzhenov is the new 14 & Under boys’ champion. The Russian had a slight upper hand throughout the match with Czech Hynek Barton, with one break in each set being enough to clinch a 6-4 6-4 victory for his fourth title of 2018, and the biggest of his young career so far. Despite the win, the perfectionist wasn’t totally satisfied with his game, saying “I played good, but it

Petr Nesterov survived a second set fightback from Daniel Linkuns-Morozovs of Latvia to win the boys’ 16 & under title in the day’s last match. The Bulgarian was the more consistent player early on, taking the first set 6-2. Linkuns-Morozovs blasted back in the second set, overpowering his opponent to level the match 6-4. Nesterov was able to recover his poise in the third set, eventually closing out a 6-2 win to become the first player from his country to win this category. “I’m very happy with this title,” he said. “I fought very hard for it, and I will never forget this tournament.”

The bronze medal play-off matches were some of the hardest fought battles of the entire tournament. Matthew Donald (CZE) edged top seed Mili Poljicak 4-6 7-5 6-3 in the boys’ 14 & Under event, while Aliona Falei of Belarus also recovered from the brink of defeat to get past compatriot Evialina Laskevich 1-6 7-5 6-4.
Girls 16 & under champion Antonia Ruzic (CRO).
The 16 & Under competition saw Klaudija Bubelyte (LTU) outlast Anna Panchartek (CZE) 6-4 6-7(7) 6-4 to claim bronze in a three-hour marathon, while Petar Teodorovic benefitted from a walkover as Serbian compatriot Stefan Popovic was forced to withdraw due to illness.

Masters players attend Junior School classes
NI
R MAST
The 32 Tennis Europe Junior Masters qualifiers attended a special educational forum today ahead of the season-ending tournament in Reggio Calabria, Italy. The class was part of the new Tennis Europe Junior School initiative, which is due to be implemented for the 2019 season. The programme saw presentations from Tennis Europe’s Communications Manager Jonathan Jobson, who informed the athletes about the broader work of the organisation and how the Junior School will help to prepare them for life on other circuits on the journey to becoming professional tennis players. Faye Andrews, Director of sports media consultancy The Emilia Group, then led the players through a brief media workshop, with video contributions from ATP and WTA players such as Thanasi Kokkinakis and Elena Makarova, who shared their advice for juniors on dealing with media responsibilities. The players were then split into small groups for ‘Brain Games’ tasks in which they competed against each other to see who knew the most on a wide range of topics, including nutrition, integrity, sponsorship and the tennis ecosystem. In 2019, the Junior School will be calling in on a number of the Tennis Europe Junior Tour’s biggest events, and will see the launch of an online education platform featuring videos for players, coaches and parents, ensuring all junior players understand the pathway from junior to professional player.

Tennis Europe Junior Tour Season-End rankings released The biggest-ever edition of the Tennis Europe Junior Tour concluded last week with the celebration of the season-ending Junior Masters in Reggio Calabria, Italy. The elite competition brought together the top players after a record-breaking year that saw a total of 372 tournaments held across 46 of Tennis Europe’s 50 member nations. The year-end rankings have now been released, with many of the Masters participants making significant moves after the final event. Joining the likes of Novak Djokovic, Martina Hingis and Justine Henin in ending the season in the top spot, are the 2018 #1s: Girls 14 & Under: Boys 14 & Under: Girls 16 & Under: Boys 16 & Under:
Linda Noskova (CZE) Mili Poljicak (CRO) Antonia Ruzic (CRO) Petr Nesterov (BUL)

• 3 players from non-European countries ended the year in the Top 20
• 13 Czech players appear in total, the most of any nation • 9 players are from Russia • 8 are from Serbia • 7 are from Ukraine • 6 are from Poland • 5 are from France • 4 are from Croatia (including two #1s) and Latvia

A total of 81 nationalities across the globe are reflected in the 4,997 players to appear in the rankings. International representation is extremely diverse, with players from countries as far afield as the United States, the Dominican Republic, Mauritius, South Korea, Botswana and Argentina represented. Some intercontinental players even managed to crack the Top 20, headed by Alexandra Eala (PHI), Chloe Tang (AUS) and He Ziheng (CHN). Owner of an incredible 8810 win/loss record since her European debut and winner of four Category 1 titles this season, Eala is perched at #6 on the girls’ 14 & Under year-end ranking. Tang comes in at #14 on the girls’ 16 & Under ranking, while Ziheng sits at number 13 on the boys’ 14 & Under list. Tennis Europe Chief Executive Officer Thomas Hammerl commented, “We’d like to congratulate each and every player that took part in the Tennis Europe Junior Tour this year. Every player has a different goal, but for many our circuits represent the first step on the path to one day becoming a professional and competing on ATP/WTA Tours and at the Grand Slams. The Tour continues to grow and 2019 will be no exception, with a host of new features, tournaments, and learning tools for player development coming soon.” The season-ending rankings take into account exclusively performances at Tennis Europe Junior Tour events throughout the year. The overall junior rankings also include points earned at ITF Junior and Pro Circuit tournaments. Tauson & Forejtek claim European 18 & Under titles
Adhering to the motto ‘save the best for last’, Frejtek and Adrian Andreev battled for almost three hours in the gruelling sun for the most coveted continental prize in junior tennis. It was clear that neither player would give in, having both already staged impressive comebacks in their semi-finals. Their previous match - in May in France - had ended in a final set tiebreaker, an indication of the drama that was to come.

In the girls draw, top-seeded 15-year old Clara Tauson lived up to her reputation. She was mostly in charge of the match against the crafty Maja Chwalinska, who had been forced to expend lots of energy in some lengthy battles the previous days. Tauson was especially effective when

It was a successful end to his first week of collaboration with Jiri Novak. The former Top 5 player, who now oversees the Czech boys, can be described as ‘Mr. Switzerland’. Three of his seven professional titles were won in Gstaad and Basel, and now he can add another Swiss achievement to his resume.

Throughout the early stages, the Bulgarian Andreev held a slight advantage and even got as far as match point in the second set tiebreak. Forejtek however saved it with a courageous dropshot and from then on gained momentum as he powered through the final set to seal a 6-7(1) 7-6(6) 6-3 win. “I am very happy to have won this title, I didn’t have too many expectations when I got here”, the Czech said in the on-court interview.

European Junior Championships had been hoping for a unique fourth European Junior Championship title in successive years, having won the 14 & Under doubles title in 2015, the 16 & Under doubles title in 2016, and the 16 & Under singles title last year. On Saturday, the doubles titles were won by Filip Cristian Jianu & Stefan Palosi of Romania, who defeated Erik Grevelius & Gustaf Strom of Sweden, while in the girls’
event Italians Elisabetta Cocciaretto & Federica Rossi came back from a set deficit to beat another Romanian pair; Selma Stefania Cadar & Andreea Prisacariu. Sunday’s victories for Tauson and Forejtek drew to a close the 22nd edition of the event in Klosters, where the contract has been extended up until 2022. “We are looking forward to more great years of tennis in the mountains”, said tournament director Hans Markutt.

Alcaraz & Bartone victorious at European 16 & Under Championships
Having come into the tournament as slight outsiders, both champions were on form in Moscow. The boys’ winner, Alcaraz, did not have an easy draw by any means
and was made to work for his trophy. He was pushed to seven games in both sets in the first round, but

Carlos Alcaraz (ESP) and Kamilla Bartone (LAT) have added their names to an illustrious list of winners that includes the likes of Simona Halep, Grigor Dimitrov, Daria Kasatkina and Fabio Fognini at the 16 & Under European championships in Moscow. Alcaraz becomes the second Spaniard in three years to win the title while Bartone is the first Latvian to lift the trophy. There was to be victory in the doubles for the girls from Belarus, as Victoryia Kanapatskaya, the winner last year, and Jana Kolodynska took the title. To cap off a weekend where the trophies went to winners from different nations, Michael Frank and Lukas Neumayer were the first boys’ winners from Austria in 40 years.

managed to pull through. His round of 16 match against Egor Agafonov (RUS) was a topsy-turvy threeset tussle, and in the following round, the quarter final, he halted top seed Holger Rune’s quest to become just the third player ever to win the European 14 and 16 titles in successive years. His straight set dismissal of the fifth-ranked player gave him great confidence moving on to the semi-final, where he outdid Jerome Kym of Switzerland for the loss of six games. His opponent in the final was Rune’s countryman Elmer Moller. As the seeds in his half of the draw fell by the wayside, the only seeded player he encountered on route to the final was in the third round. Except for a three-set win in the semi-final over Italian Luciano Darderi, Moller was in dominant form, winning all other matches in straight sets. The final was another relatively straightforward match, however, and Alcaraz claimed the title by defeating Moller 6-4 6-3. Alcaraz was half of last year’s 14&U doubles runner-up team in the European Junior Championships and can now proudly add this winner’s trophy to his collection.

Eyeing over her list of match wins on route to the final, Bartone’s scoresheet reads most impressively. Her fantastic summer form was clearly on display in the Russian capital, as she swept through the field without dropping a set the whole week. Coming in as the
sixth seed she had some great wins along the way, including over Avvenire runner-up, Asia Serafini (ITA) as well as what was arguably her match of the tournament, in which she completely (falta palabra) outplayed the number two seed Elina Avanesyan, gifting the Russian just one game. As no previous champion had come from Latvia there would definitely be one this year, as both finalists hailed from the Baltic nation. Although the top seed, Kanapatskaya, was ousted in the first round, Patricija Spaka for her part, made fantastic inroads, dismissing promising names such as Ziva Falkner (SLO) and, in the semi-finals, Tara Wurth (CRO) on her way to the match against her compatriot. Spaka was hoping to add to her recent win at the Toyota Cup, but it was not to be, as Bartone was too strong and won the title 6-1 6-3. It was a great result for Spaka nonetheless, who vastly improved on her second round result here last year. For many tennis fans doubles is just as exciting, if not more, than the singles. The draws and the potential matchups in Moscow were quite intriguing. In the top half of the draw the top seeded Russians Egor Agafonov & Alibek Kachmazov were taken out by the eventual finalists, Peter Fajta & Zsombor Velcz of Hungary. Curiously, in round three in the bottom part of the draw, Alcaraz along with his partner Mario Gonzalez, defeated the Danish pairing of Rune & Muller - both of whom he defeated individually to capture the singles crown. However, the Moscow double was not to be for Alcaraz as the Spaniards were then taken out by the eventual champions in the quarterfinals. The Austrians had to come through some gruelling matches but showed their mettle by surviving their second championship tiebreak decider to qualify for the final, where they again needed an always nerve-wracking decider to beat the Hungarians. Frank & Neumayer deservedly lifted their trophies after a 6-4 2-6 10-2 win, having shown great fight throughout the tournament.
08
European Junior Championships The Russian girls’ top seeds Polina Kudermetova & Maria Timofeeva advanced to the final without dropping a set on route. Their opponents in the finals were to be the team from Belarus, made up of Kanapatskaya & Kolodynska, who had had a couple of tough victories on the way to the decider. Though their two
preceding matches were decided in tight championship tiebreaks, the final was less dramatic and went the way of the Belarusians. The final score was a close 6-4 7-6(6) win for the Belarusians, and the second successive gold medal in doubles here for Kanapatskaya.

Cuenin and Noskova crowned European 14&U Champions
In the girls’ draw there were comparatively few big shocks - until the final! In any case the top seeded European #1 Shnaider proceeded to the finals in methodical fashion not dropping a set throughout the entire tournament. In the quarterfinals all players were seeded, save for Belgium’s Hanne Vandewinkel, making for a rather even draw. Her compatriot Sofia Costoulas, had been in great form recently winning the Pont des Generations and the BNP Paribas Cup, but was defeated in the last eight by Noskova, who then advanced to the final after Anastasiya Soboleva (UKR) had to retire injured. In a tournament full of upsets, it was fitting that an unseeded player would win the trophy. Mouratoglou Tennis Academy protégé and Development Championships winner Kalin Ivanovski of Macedonia took out the Russian top seed, Mikhail Gorokhov, in the third round. In the other half of the draw, the number two seed from Cyprus Constantinos Koshis retired injured in the third set against the eventual champion. Ivanovski’s fantastic run continued as he proceeded to defeat the
thirteenth and fifth seeds before falling to Poljicak in the semi-final. Cuenin was on a similar tear in the top half of the draw, upsetting three seeds on route to the final showdown. The gold medal decider between the French boy and the Croatian was surprisingly one-sided, going to Cuenin 6-2 6-3, and earning him a second big title of the year, having also won at the Category 1 TIM Essonne tournament.

Czech players were represented in three of the four finals at the European 14 & Under Championships in Most, sweeping both girls’ events in a productive tournament for the local players on home soil. Linda Noskova took out the top seed Diana Schnaider of Russia in the girls’ final, while the boys’ trophy went to unseeded French player Sean Cuenin, who defeated fourth seeded Croat Mili Poljicak. Victory in the doubles also went to Noskova & Linda Fruhvirtova while Poljicak also earned more silverware, teaming with Dino Prizmic to win the boys’ title.

Unfortunately for Soboleva, still injured, she and her partner Olga Molchanova had to withdraw from the doubles semi-finals after having fought through some very tough matches to reach that stage. Therefore, their Czech rivals received a walkover into the final which they took full advantage of. The Belarusian pairing of Aliona Falei & Evialina Laskevich came into the final after a hard fought semi, but went down 6-4 6-3 in the gold medal match to Noskova & Fruhvirtova, The win made Noskova the 11th player in the 43-year history of the event to win both 14 & Under titles in the same year, an exclusive list of former champions that includes the likes of Steffi Graf, Justine Henin and Manuela Maleeva. and his partner Konstantin Zhzhenov were upset in the quarterfinals. The doubles event, however, did serve as some sort of consolation for singles finalist Poljicak, as he and Prizmic won the final, 6-4 6-2, and in doing so prevented the pairing of Hynek Barton & Matthew Donald from claiming a third title of the weekend for the host nation. In doing so, they became just the third Croatian team ever to win the title, and first since 2003.

Belarus, France and Russia claim Summer Cups titles Belarus has claimed the nation’s first ever European Summer Cups title, with the girls’ 18 & Under team defeating Russia 2-1 in the final. The Russian 16 & Under girls’ team, however, went one step further than their elder counterparts, repeating as champions thanks to a 2-1 win over Ukraine. There is little doubt that France’s boys have a bright future ahead of them, having swept both the 16 and 18 & Under boys’ titles to add to the 14 & Under championship won earlier in the summer.

after a nervy second set eventually went the way of the Belarusians 6-2 7-6(6). It was a great tournament for green and red, as they had come through the semi-finals undefeated against Slovakia, having chosen not to contest the dead doubles rubber - one which they lost against Spain on Day 1. The French boys faced their first test and first real moment of uncertainty and tension in the final against longtime rivals Spain. Clement Tabur set the French boys up with a 6-4 7-6(2) win over Nicolas Alvarez, but this advantage was lost as Carlos Lopez pegged the tie back to 1-1 after stunning Hugo Gaston 7-6(0) 3-6 6-3. Coming in as the top seeds, the favourites put all doubts to rest in the doubles. The four players stepped back on to court, but it was France who eased to a 6-4 6-3 win, and in doing so took home their third consecutive title. France extends its record as the nation with most titles in this age category to 14. Spain remains second with 11.

Later, #2 and 2016 European Junior Championships doubles champion Arthur Cazaux had to fight harder to subdue Luciano Darderi 6-2 7-6(2). All players returned to court, with the exception of Cobolli who was replaced by the reigning Tennis Europe Junior Masters 14 & Under champion Luca Nardi. The Italians were to be disappointed however, as their hosts shut them out with a straightforward 6-3 6-3 win to claim France’s first title at the final rounds in Le Touquet since 2014. Spain later beat Hungary in a champion’s tie break in the deciding doubles match to secure the bronze medals.

Belgium & Czech Republic crowned Nations Challenge by HEAD champions
s Chall
Belgium (boys) and Czech Republic (girls) have won this year’s 12 & Under Tennis Europe Nations Challenge by HEAD. Playing in Biot, France, the Belgians overcame the defending champions Croatia in the final play-offs. In Ajaccio, Corsica (France), the Czech girls successfully defended their title, keeping Latvia at bay in their final.
Group Stage A total of 63 national teams had taken part in the qualifying competitions, which were held from 26th-29th July across Europe. Two teams from each of the four groups qualified for the final rounds, played over the past four days, and were grouped as follows:
Boys Group A: Belgium, Great Britain, Italy, Turkey. Group B: Croatia, France, Romania, Ukraine.
Girls Group A: Czech Republic, Great Britain, Italy, Serbia. Group B: Latvia, Netherland, Russia, Ukraine. Each team played against other nations from the same group in a Round Robin format, with the winners of each group facing off in a final play-off. After the Round Robin stage, Belgium and Croatia ended

up undefeated in their groups, and thus advanced to play each other in the boys’ final. The Czech girls romped through their group undefeated (in ties and rubbers) and thus qualified for the final, where they were joined by Latvia.
Finals
The first match of the boys’ final was a cracker and went the distance. Sebastian Cauhape survived a second set thrashing to grind home a 7-5 1-6 7-6(3) victory for the Belgians over Fran Rakonic to put them up 1-0. Louis-Lou Langenaken had an easier time in his 6-4 6-0 win over Antonio Voljavec. The doubles match was not played, with Cauhape & Louis Maurau handed a walkover and thus a 3-0 finals win for Belgium. On day one, they had defeated Turkey 2-1, clinching the tie in the doubles. On Friday, the Belgians whitewashed the Brits 3-0 and then set themselves up for the final with a 2-1 win over Italy. Croatia defeated Romania 3-0 on Thursday and then saw off both Ukraine and France 2-1 to advance to the finals. The win over France ended the host nation’s hopes of becoming the first ever country to win all four European summer team competitions (12, 14, 16 and 18 & Under) in the same year, and was a first-ever Nations Challenge title for Belgium. In the girls’ final, the Czechs were simply too strong for their Latvian counterparts, relinquishing a maximum of three games in each match. Sara Bejlek got the Czechs off to a strong start with a 6-1 6-2 win over Elizabete Brutane. Nikola Bartunkova kept the momentum going, posting the same scoreline in her victory over Valerija Maija Kargina. Bejek & Tereza Valentova sealed the deal with a 6-3 6-0 routing of Brutane & Marina Markina to complete a 3-0 win for the Czech team and ensure that the title would remain in Czech hands for a second successive year.

Both Latvia and Russia had lost a match each in the Round Robin stage. Although Russia got the better of Latvia 2-1 in their encounter on Thursday, Russia lost to Ukraine 1-2 on Friday and then defeated Netherlands 3-0 yesterday. Latvia, however, beat both Netherlands and Ukraine 3-0. Latvia advanced to the final instead of Russia, despite having lost to them, by virtue of a better win-loss percentage. Although the Latvians were already leading 2-0 in their other ties, they fought out nailbiting championship tiebreak wins against both Ukraine and Netherlands to end up winning both rubbers 3-0. The Czech girls were in scintillating form throughout the four days, failing to give an inch in any of their ties, coming through with 3-0 victories in all of them. Italy was the first to be beaten 3-0 on Thursday. On Friday it was Great Britain’s turn in the firing line, while on the Saturday Serbia also capitulated 3-0 to the Czechs. Latvia’s route to the final was fraught with peril, as they had to rely on mathematics to get them through.

France and Italy celebrate European Beach Tennis Championship victories Theo Irigaray & Mathieu Guegano of France backed up a sensational semi-final win over world #1s and defending champions Luca Cramarossa & Marco Garavini to become the first ever non-Italian winners of a men’s European Beach Tennis Championship title. In the final they faced Russian third seeds Nikita Burmakin & Sergey Kuptsov, who were coming off their own semi-final upset, having outlasted Michele Cappelletti & Luca Carli in the match of the tournament, a 7-6 5-7 7-5 victory that took almost three hours. There was nothing to separate the two teams in the early stages of the match, but once the French pair edged a first set tie break 7-5 there was no looking back, a single break in the 10th game of the second set was enough to clinch the title and a famous victory for the French pair.
Women’s Doubles podium.
In a rematch of last year’s final, Cramarossa & Garavini later dropped just two games against Cappelletti & Carli to claim the bronze medal, 6-1 6-1. The women’s final was another re-match of a 2017 final, but saw the result reversed as Sofia Cimatti & Flaminia Daina eased past compatriots and top seeds Federica Bacchetta & Giulia Gasparri 7-5 6-0. The victory marked a second European title for the pair, who also won in 2016, and keeps alive Italy’s streak of having won gold at all previous editions of the women’s tournament. The mixed doubles final produced a titanic battle between four Italians in what was arguably the best match of the final day. Michele Cappelletti & Giulia Gasparri emerged triumphant after a 20-point champion’s tiebreak to claim the gold medals over Garavini & Daina
Irigay & Guegano celebrate their momentous win.
7-6(5) 0-6 [11-9]. The win ensured that despite the surprise victory for the French men, Italy would finish top of the Nations Ranking once again. A total of 122 players from 21 nations were in action at this twelfth edition of the European Beach Tennis Championships, which was hosted by the Latvian Tennis Union in Jurmala. For a third consecutive year, a junior event was held alongside the main tournament, with all three gold medals claimed by Italian teams. Unseeded Giacomo Gabellini & Andrea Nuti ousted Riccardo Manenti & Andrea Reginato 6-4 7-5 to claim the boys title, while top seeds Greta Giusti & Giulia Trippa beat Russians Yana Lavrenteva & Veronika Pershina 6-2 7-5 to win the girls’. The victory was a second for each player, with Giusti having won in 2016 and Trippa last year. Manenti later teamed up with Camila Spadoni to claim the junior mixed title over Gabellini & Giusti.
Team Italy again captured the Nations Trophy.

European Senior Club Championships This year’s European Senior Club Championships event saw an incredible eight of ten winning clubs breaking through to secure their first ever European titles. ton finished their round-robin group ahead of Spain’s Real Zaragoza to pick up a maiden win at the championships, while Byfleet Lawn Tennis Club also pipped Spanish opposition to the women’s title, in the form of Club de Campo Villa de Madrid. Week Two was much busier, with eight titles up for grabs. Incredibly, six of the eight titles went to teams who won first-ever Europeans titles for their clubs. 2015 runners-up Murcia Club de Tenis 1919 provided local winners for the Men’s 35 event, and ensured at least one Spanish winner at the event for a sixth consecutive year. The two exceptions were both German clubs. TC BlauWeiss Fürstenzell has won two Men’s 50s titles in the past four years and this time stepped up for a first Men’s 55s title. The team from SC Rot-Weiss Remscheld also continued its impressive story. Having made its debut in the competition last year, the club remains unbeaten, topping their Austrian rivals to retain the Men’s 45 title.

Pörtschach to host 2019 European Senior Championships level events in Pörtschach, with a Grade A ITF Senior Circuit event expected to be played the preceding week (3-9 June). The European Senior Championships is Europe’s most prestigious in terms of ranking points. Played on clay courts, the tournament will see all men’s and ladies’ age categories in action (35-85), plus doubles and mixed doubles events. Singles events will also offer consolation competitions. The long-term aim of Tennis Europe is to upgrade the European Championships and ensure that it retains and enhances its position as the highlight of Europe’s senior tennis calendar. As part of the plan to grow the event sustainably, Tennis Europe hopes to obtain a fixed week in the Senior Circuit calendar in order to assist the players with their annual planning in future. Tournament director Gernot Dreier highlighted the rich tennis history and many tourist attractions of the region,
including the Pörtschach bay, the castle of Velden and the Pyramidenkogel tower. “The aim of the Carinthian Tennis Association is to make this tournament an exemplary event for seniors,” he said. “Our key words are ‘Stylish and dignified, familiar and friendly, a tournament with competition and feel-good character.’” Entries will be open, via IPIN, in due course.

France claims inaugural Padel Nations Cup France has beaten Italy 2/1 on an exciting final day of competition to win the first edition of the Padel Nations Cup. The French exacted revenge for a defeat earlier in the week during the round-robin stage of the competition to outlast the favourites in a thrilling final mixed doubles tie. Julien Maigret & Benjamin Taison gave the French an early lead thanks a tight two-set win over Daniele Cattaneo & Simone Cremona, 7-5 7-6. Italy’s ladies’ pair of Chiara Pappacena & Giulia Sussarello then levelled the score, sensationally reversing a straight forward defeat on Thursday to concede just two games in a 6-1 6-1 rollover of Lea Godallier & Melissa Martin.
Final Standings
The stage was set for a deciding mixed doubles match which didn’t disappoint the fans as Martin & Tison fought back from a set down to eventually outlast Cremona & Sussarello 3-6 6-3 6-4.

Tennis Europe appoints Padel Manager Tennis Europe has announced that Marta Conean has been recruited for the new position of Padel Manager. Conean, 44, is a former tennis professional and a leading Padel instructor in her native Italy. She has already begun work and one of her first tasks was to oversee Tennis Europe’s inaugural international Padel event, the Nations Cup, which was held in Nijmegen, where it was hosted by the Royal Dutch Lawn Tennis Association (KNLTB). The Padel Manager position was created in response to demand from Tennis Europe’s constituent 50 national tennis federations, many of which already incorporate Padel to their national calendars. Marta’s main task will be to take on the communication between these nations in their dealings with Padel. Ms. Conean commented, “I’m very proud to join Tennis Europe and am very happy that the organisation has decided to work on the development of Padel. Padel is the fastest growing sport in Europe - it’s easy to play, great fun and playable by everyone. It has enormous potential and I want to help tennis federations and clubs to benefit from its
growth. Padel can bring social and economic benefits to all member nations and is not a rival to tennis, but a complementary sport that reflects the modern way of life.” Tennis Europe President Vladimir Dmitriev commented, “We are very pleased to welcome Marta to the team and look forward to working with her to further our involvement in Padel. The position received great interest and I’d like to thank all of those who applied. Marta has a wealth of experience and I am sure that she will do an excellent job on behalf of our member nations.”

ITF/Tennis Europe 16 & Under Touring Team in Italy and Denmark The 2018 ITF/Tennis Europe 16 & Under Junior Grand Slam Touring Team spent the early summer period on a tour across Europe, where they took part in two Tennis Europe Category 1 16 & Under tournaments in Italy before travelling to Denmark for two ITF Grade 4 and 5 events. The team consisted of 4 girls and 4 boys and was accompanied by the ITF coaches Anna Britton (GBR) and Goran Shevchenko (MKD). The girls’ team was comprised of Selin Sepkin (TUR), Daniela Glanzer (AUT), Pola Wygonowska (POL) and Beyda Baykal (TUR) and the boys were Mans Dahlberg (SWE), Marko Andrejic (AUT), Maximilian Kasnikowski (POL) and Peter Kalocsai (HUN). After gathering together in Rome, the team first had a short training camp at the club in Foligno where they had some hard court sessions ahead of the tournament there. The training focused on tactical play, doubles pairings and patterns of play for the upcoming events. Foligno proved to be a good competitive start to the tour. On the girls’ side in singles Daniela Glanzer reached the quarter final losing out to another team member Selin Sepkin 3-6 0-6. Sepkin then lost in the semifinal to the very consistent Linda Fruhvirtova (CZE) 3-6 0-6. The other female team members Beyda Baykal and Pola Wygonowska had to play each other in the semifinal with Pola Wygnowska coming out on top 6-0 6-2. This was Wygonowska’s first Category 1 final and she put up a great fight with some incredibly long rallies and a great standard even though ultimately the scoreline did not reflect it. Of the two 14-year olds Fruhvirtova proved the fitter player, winning 2-6 1-6. In the girls’ doubles Glanzer & Sepkin paired up and came through in the quarterfinals against Sofia Pizzoni & Maria Properzi (ITA) 6-2 7-6(4) before losing a very tight semifinal 6-3 6-7(5) (10-7) to the strong COSAT doubles pairing of Guillermina Grant (URU) and Nalanda Da Silva Teixeira (BRA) 6-3 6-7(10-7). The other paring of Baykal & Wygonowska came through matches to line themselves up in the final against Grant & Da Silva Teixeira, but lost 3-6 3-6. On the boys’ side Peter Kalocsal lost in the singles quarter final against COSAT player Pedro Boscardin Dias (BRA) 4-6 0-6 and Maks Kasnikowski made it through to the semis before also falling to Boscardin Dias 3-6 1-6. The boys pairing of Kasnikowski & Marko Andrejic made it through to the quarter final losing out in a double tie break thriller to Alejandro Turriziani Alverez & Daniel Rincon (ESP) 6-3 6-7(4) 5-10. After travelling across Italy by train the team reached Milan and having been greeted by the very welcoming
tournament team proceeded to the prestigious Torneo Avvenire. Selin Sepkin won through 3 matches at this strong tournament and made it through to the quarter final before losing to Asia Serafini (ITA) 2-6 6-3 6-2. In doubles, the pairing of Wygonowska & Baykal beat Antonia Ruzic & Tara Wurth (CRO) 7-6 6-4 and then having done well to get to the final had another match up with the COSAT pairing of Guillermina Grant and Nalanda Da Silva. After yet another close game had to settle for second place once again, losing 6-3 6-4. The boys draw for this Category 1 tournament was incredibly strong and the boys notched up some good doubles results with Kasnikowski & Andrejic making the quarter finals. The other pairing of Peter Kalocsai & Mans Dahlberg proceeded to the semifinal before falling to Mario Gonzalez Fernandez & Mario Mansilla (ESP) 3-6 4-6. The next stop was the shift to the ITF G4 in Odense, Denmark. After being hit with incredibly bad weather, with the conditions being cold and windy the transition proved to be a difficult test for most players. Sepkin and Wygonowska made it through to the girls’ quarter finals where they ended up playing each other, with Wygonowska coming out on top 6-3 6-1. Unfortunately, she was struggling with illness and lost her next match to the eventual winner Klara Milicevic (SWE) 6-4 6-0. On the boys’ side, Maks Kasnikowski proved to be ready to have another great week after Foligno and reached the semis where he lost to the eventual winner Elmer Moller (DEN) 4-6 4-6. Peter Kalocsai proved himself with another good doubles result, reaching the quarter final alongside Przemyslaw Zalubski (POL). For the final week the coaches organised the group back onto the trains and headed over to another city in Denmark, Aarhus this time for the ITF Grade 5 event. This tournament turned out be stronger than the week before, despite its lower grading. In Aarhus, three of the girls team reached the quarter finals. Beyda Baykal lost to the previous weeks winner Milicevic 6-1 3-6 6-1, Pola Wygnowska was feeling a little jaded having never previously played at this level for four consecutive

ITF/Tennis Europe 16 & Under Touring Team in Italy and Denmark weeks as she is still only 14. After reaching three finals in previous weeks, she managed to make the quarters where she again had to face Sepkin. This tume the Turk came out on top, winning 7-6(4) 6-2. Sepkin then faced Christina Mayorova Bakhtina, a relatively experienced Spaniard who already holds a WTA ranking, and although Sepkin used some good tactical play to give her opponent some problems she came up short losing 4-6 3-6, and her opponent went on to win the tournament. In the girls doubles draw Sepkin paired up with Darila Monakhov (RUS) and found herself again in the quarter final, once again falling to the inbeatable COSAT pairing of Grant & Teixeira da Silva. Glanzer and Wygonowska paired up again and made it through to the quarter final where they had some chances but lost against the Spanish pair of Mayorova Bakhtina & Maria Pages Meres in a tight match 6-3 5-7(4-10). This week Marko Andrejic showed that he can perform at a good level after 3 weeks of drawing the eventu-
al winners or finalists in the early rounds, he made it through to the quarter final in singles, eventually losing to Linus Halldon Carllson (SWE) 6-3 6-7(5) 5-7 in a very tight match that lasted 3 and a half hours. For the boys doubles to freshen things up for both the European and COSAT teams there was a crossover making four new doubles partnerships. Peter Kalocsai eventually reached the semifinal with Matias Iturbe (ARG). Mans Dahlberg had a successful week making it to the deciding match with Francisco Llanes (URU) before losing to Patrik Kosinski & Przemyslaw Zalubski (POL) in a nail biting final 3-6 7-6(4) 10-12. The tour then finished with a final day of training before the teams headed to Copenhagen and their respective journeys home. The players felt like they learned a lot throughout the tour, gaining technical and tactical help to move them forwards in their future pathways. This was also the first time the players had played four weeks of consecutive tournaments and it gave them an insight on how physically and mentally prepared they need to be for the tour. Overall the team reached five finals. It was a great tour with many lessons learned, one of which was how to adapt quickly to playing doubles with different partners and their styles. Coaches Britton and Shevchenko said the players were great to work with, listened well to instructions and working eagerly on all the tactical and technical goals that were set. There was a great collaboration and friendship development with the COSAT team, both coaches and players, which helped push the players to achieve more. We are looking forward to seeing how these young players develop in the coming years.
ITF Development Officer for Europe visits Belarus The ITF Development Officer for Europe, Vitor Cabral, visited the Belarus Tennis Federation recently. The country’s capital Minsk has three high level tennis facilities where the local federation manages the national teams and the country’s most promising talents. Under the command of Vladimir Voltchkov, a team of coaches, fitness experts and a competent staff prepares the future of top-level players that the country hopes will challenge the leading nations. The government of the country has made significant investments in these tennis facilities and with a team of very experienced coaches including Tatiana Poutchek, Belarus just needs a small push – and a lot of hard work from all stakeholders - to reach its goal of becoming one of the top nations in tennis.
Support has been secured from the local National Olympic Committee for more important projects, which will be implemented from early 2019. The federation can count on continued support from the International Tennis Federation and Tennis Europe in this process.

COACHING CAROUSEL Lots of coaching changes on the WTA Tour ahead of the off-season: Angelique Kerber has ended her successful partnership with Wim Fissette. Johanna Konta is working with Dimitri Zavialoff on a trial basis. Elena Svitolina has begun working with Nick Saviano. Maria Sakkari is no longer working with Thomas Johansson.
INJURIES Having clinched the end of year #1 spot, Simona Halep has withdrawn from her remaining tournaments this season to rest a herniated disk. Juan Martín del Potro is unsure as to whether he will compete again this season following a fracture of his right kneecap in Shanghai.
MINI TENNIS Former world #1 in singles and doubles Martina Hingis, and former doubles #1 Elena Vesnina have both announced that they are expecting their first children. Meanwhile Yaroslava Shvedova (twins) and Anna Chakvetadze have both welcomed their first born.

Introducing... Giovanni Capachietti Giovanni Capacchietti is the long-time organizer of one of the Tennis Europe Junior Tour’s more unique events – the 12 & Under Lampo Trophy, a team event which attracts entries from around the world. He is also responsible for a qualifying round of the official European 12 & Under team competition, the Nations Challenge by HEAD. We caught up with him to ask about his passion for events of this age group. In addition to organising junior events, you sometimes play on the ITF Senior Circuit. Where and when did your fascination with tennis begin and how have you kept it alive for all these years? My passion for tennis started very young, at the age of 8 in the street. Then, I started playing on tennis courts and I became one of the best players in my home town. In order to keep this passion alive I decided in 1996 to organize an international Under 14 team event, which was a great success. Today, I have been organising the Lampo trophy for the last 17 years which also helped me keep this passion for tennis. I believe that this tournament is one of the best-organised Tennis Europe tournaments, which is why I intend to continue in July 2019. Can you tell us a little bit more about yourself and your career? Originally, I am a physical education teacher/trainer and also a tennis coach. You are particularly enthusiastic about team events. Is this a reason why you chose to organize a qualifying round of the Tennis Europe Nations Challenge by HEAD over the last few years? Yes, it has indeed motivated me. It can also be noted that I was actually the tournament director of the first edition of the Tennis Europe Nations Challenge by HEAD in 2007 and did this for the first four years. This year was the second year that we started again organizing it. I am passionate about organizing tennis tournaments, which I always try to do in the best possible way. Indeed, I always try to improve the organization from one year to another. For example now, when players and coaches arrive in the tournaments’ town, we offer them a lot of presents including local products (wine, oil, pasta) which are of very high quality level.
Nations have come from all over Europe and even further afield (Canada, Mexico) to compete in the Nation Trophy. What is your favorite part about organising the event and what are the challenges? I really like having a high level of tennis in my tournament and having international teams helps to improve the level. As an example, Canada came with a team made of very strong players and Mexico, which have been participating for two years now also showed an incredible level of tennis. The main challenge is that it is difficult to bring international tennis teams because of the cost it implies for the national federations. Additionally, for me, the relationships with the coaches are very important as they are key to have their opinions regarding tennis tournaments organisations, especially considering their experiences around the Tennis Europe Junior Tour. You must have a large team working on the Lampo Cup – Nation Trophy. How much do you enjoy this aspect and are there people to take over if you ever have to take a back seat? Yes indeed, I am working alongside a very professional team. The success of this event is also thanks to them. For example, the Bulgarian team that came to play the Nations Challenge by HEAD this year really enjoyed the organization of the event, which pushed them to sign the entry form for 2019 only one day after the end of the competition.

Introducing... Linda Fruhvirtova Linda Fruhvirtova of the Czech Republic recently topped the European 14 & Under rankings for the first time after an amazing year in which she compiled a 36-4 win/loss record on the Tennis Europe Junior Tour. The Mouratoglou Tennis Academy pupil’s run included Category 1 titles in both 14 and 16 & Under age categories, as well as a gold medal in doubles at the European Championships in Most.
You had a phenomenal start to 2018, in both singles and doubles, winning at the Winter Cups and at a host of big tournaments – Les Petit As, Kungens Kanna, TIM Essone, Torello. How do you feel about this? Thank you! I think I have had a good start last winter with reaching the finals at Eddie Herr and winning the Orange Bowl as a result of a good preparation where I don ‘t play many tournaments and I try to concentrate more on good quality training. What did you enjoy the most to play? Singles or doubles? I enjoy playing both singles and doubles, but my focus is on singles. I have enjoyed a lot the matches in the Winter Cups. How do you prepare yourself for matches? I am trying to take the matches as any other day with tennis – the only difference I feel is the concentration and I am trying to concentrate the most on a match day.
There is always something new. Most difficult usually is the beginning of the tournament before getting into the match rhythm. It must be quite competitive in the Fruhvirtova household with your younger sister, Brenda, also playing on the Tennis Europe Junior Tour. This must be a special experience – do you feel you can give tips and advice already? With my sister we are trying to help each other as much as we can. Of course, I share all my experience with my sister and she helps me at the tournaments sometimes, with warm ups and so on.
What inspires you? Do you have any idols? My biggest inspiration is the sport itself because it gives me the opportunity to go to new places and to meet many interesting people. I don ‘t really have any idols, I just want to be myself. How did you start playing tennis? What does it mean for you? I did gymnastics when I was younger, but I didn‘t really like the competition in this sport, which is ruled by the referees only. That’s why I decided to play tennis where I can compete more for myself and decide the points. In a tournament, what do you enjoy the most? Which is the most difficult part for you? In a tournament I enjoy most a new place I ‘m playing at.

Tennis Europe Junior Tour Rankings - Overall Tennis Europe’s junior ranking system is devised to give a unified overall list that shows the relative strengths of all players, regardless of where they achieved their results or picked up points. A player’s overall total includes points from Tennis Europe Junior Tour 16 and 14 & Under events, plus points earned by players in these age categories who participate in ITF Junior Circuit and professional tournaments, all of which are weighted according to their relative strengths. The 14
& Under ranking is still available separately (see next page), as well as being integrated to these overall rankings. For more information on the rankings system, check out the Tennis Europe Junior Tour Rules and Regulations at www.TennisEurope.org. The ‘Race to the Masters’ rankings are also available separately, and include points earned exclusively at Tennis Europe Junior Tour events. Rankings below are as of 16th October 2018.
