Sponsorship boost for Tennis Europe the newly created ‘Tennis Europe Fund.’ The Fund will operate independently from the International Tennis Federation and benefit all European member nations for their development and junior activities. Vice President Attila Richter then led a discussion about the European aspects of the upcoming ITF Board elections, which were held later that week. There followed a debate about the importance of regional representation of Tennis Europe members on the Board of the ITF. CEO Thomas Hammerl used his address to point out the importance of the work carried out by all National
Federations for the tennis ecosystem, and mentioned that Tennis Europe aims to stand up for, and restore respect to, the National Federations and their executive and volunteer staff. “It is the focus of Tennis Europe to strengthen and unite the continent and to be a role model for other Regional Associations,” he said. Mr. Hammerl also updated the assembly on the new Strategy and gave an overview of various new projects, including: • Tennis Europe Junior School • Training Academy in Prostejov • Upgraded conferences for the member nations • Increased social media activities • Statistics on European junior tennis Mr. Dmitriev commented, “We are grateful to the ITF for the opportunity to meet here in Lisbon and are happy to see such high attendance from our member nations. 2019 has been a particularly busy year for Tennis Europe with a number of new projects undertaken, and we have been pleased by the feedback so far. We also had a frank and fruitful discussion about this week’s elections, which once again illustrated the importance of a strong and united European tennis family.”

WTA and Tennis Europe team up for player education project Tennis Europe and the WTA have announced plans to collaborate on the Tennis Europe Junior School in 2020. Designed to help prepare young players for their life as professional tennis players, the School is the sport’s first international educational program for the 14 and 16 & Under age groups. Around 500 young athletes have benefitted from onsite classes at eight leading Tennis Europe Junior Tour events in 2019, and learned about topics including:
• Anti-Doping • Integrity in Tennis • Agents and Sponsorship • Tennis Ecosystem
Meanwhile, the current content is also available online in the form of video clips for all the Tour’s 20,000 eligible junior players. Having given its official approval to the project, the WTA can now contribute to the selection and creation of content tailored specifically for young female players, send experts to Junior School classes, and advise on a wide range of topics in the Junior School curriculum. Tennis Europe CEO Thomas Hammerl initiated the project in 2018, and commented, “We are very proud to officially welcome the WTA on board. Both organisations recognise the importance of education for players and furthermore we believe it is vital that players receive consistent messages throughout their journeys, so this cooperation is particularly significant. We are looking forward to working together to ensure that young players from Europe and beyond get prepared for their life on the WTA Tour.” “The WTA is looking forward to collaborating with the Tennis Europe Junior School in 2020 as we look to support these young players and prepare them for a re-
warding and successful career,” said Ashley Keber, WTA Vice President, Member Relations. “The WTA will work closely with Tennis Europe to develop, enhance and educate these players during their formative years, working in tandem to provide training and skill-building along their developmental spectrum with the ultimate goal being a smooth transition to the professional circuit and a healthy and successful career.” Tennis Europe runs more than 400 junior tournaments across the continent across three age categories and provides important rankings for players aged 14 and 16 & Under. Education is a key pillar of the organisation’s strategy and the European Federation is currently working on the creation of new Junior School content to be launched for the 2020 season. The most recent School classes saw three events held simultaneously, in Most (CZE), Moscow (RUS) and Klosters (SUI) at the European Junior Championships. The final class of the year will take place at the Tennis Europe Junior Masters in Reggio Calabria, Italy, in early October. Vojtech Petr of Czech Republic won his fourth title of the year, claiming the European 14 & Under boys title with a 2-6 6-3 6-2 win over Dino Prizmic of Croatia. Meanwhile, Michaela Laki became the first ever Greek winner of the European 14 & Under title, after a 6-3 6-2 win over 2018 Orange Bowl champion Melisa Ercan of Turkey. On route to winning gold, Laki saw off (7) Karolina Kozakova (SUI), Brenda Fruhvirtova (CZE) and #5 seed Nikola Bartunkova (CZE), who had previously seen off top seed Alisa Baranovaska in the previous round. Petr also had impressive wins over Branko Djuric (SRB) and twelfth seeded compatriot Jakub Mensik on his way to the final. As is the case with the 16&U finalists, both winners and runners-up receive invitations to compete at the season-ending Tennis Europe Junior Masters in Reggio Calabria.

The biggest shock of the week was arguably the 6-3 7-5 loss of #2 seed Yaroslav Demin in his first match on Day 2 to Patrick Jozwicki (AUT). The Tennis Europe 14&U #2 ranked player had already made 4 finals appearances this year, taking home two titles. The much-anticipated clash between the top two seeds, Demin and #1 Mihai Alexandru Coman (ROU) will have to wait. The Romanian, for his part, looked only to be growing in might and confidence as the week progressed. As fate would have it, he too was upset by the demure Prizmic in the semis.

the mix. The marquee quarterfinal matchup was that which included the only two seeds facing off, however there were no further upsets as Coman defeated (6) Alexander Blockx (BEL) 6-2 6-1.

It was a similar story for the girls, as the seeds fell by the wayside on day 3 with (4) Anastasiia Gureva (RUS) falling to Brenda Fruhvirtova (CZE), who extended her 2019 win/loss record to 23/5. Also bidding farewell at the same stage were (2) Kristyna Tomajkova (CZE), (12) Jana Stojanova (MKD) and (15) Hanna Tsitavets (BLR). Number 16 seed Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva (AND), the Mutua Madrid Open junior girls’ champion, would have liked to progress further than Round 4, but there are still plenty of good things to come from the promising young player from Andorra.

Sadaoui & Kudermetova on top at European 16 & Under Championships A successful French contingent left Moscow with three singles medals. Mehdi Sadaoui won gold against fellow unseeded Max Westphal 6-4 6-2, with his compatriot being awarded the silver medal. He is now the sixth French 16&U champion this century, following in the footsteps of well-known players such as Alizé Cornet (2005 champion) and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (2001). In the girls’ draw, Polina Kudermetova became the first Russian girl to win this event since Daria Kasatkina in 2013. She outdid Elsa Jacquemot (FRA) 7-6(3) 7-5 in front of her home crowd, winning the gold for Russia, with France obtaining the silver, its third medal in singles.
BOYS Nesterov ended up going down in three dramatic tiebreak slugfests to Westphal, while second seed Popovic fell in an equally arduous quarterfinal duel against (5) Jack Pinnington Jones (GBR). Sixth seed Ainus Sabaliauskas (LTU) and (7) Mili Poljicak (CRO) made surprise exits, but no exit was more shocking than that of #1 Viacheslav Bielinskyi (UKR). Eventual semi-finalist Marko Andrejic (AUT) was responsible for the demise of the top seed, a prolific title winner in 2018, taking out the Ukrainian 7-6(4) 5-7 6-4.

The Day 2 shocks were just as common for the girls as the boys. Second seed Diana Shnaider (RUS), (6) Fatma Idrizovic (SRB), (7) Linda Noskova (CZE) and (5) Laura Hietaranta (FIN) all found themselves on the sidelines,

Stefan Popovic (SRB) respectively. Meanwhile the 16&U winners from 2018, Antonia Ruzic (CRO) and Petr Nesterov (BUL), were also in action.

He had suffered a broken thumb and it took him quite a while to get match-fit again. In Klosters, he definitely was on form, on the Saturday he had already won the doubles alongside Harold Mayot. To make the triumph complete, France also won the Nations Trophy, so the “Marseillaise”, the magic French anthem, was played twice in a few minutes, with Royer, Mayot and coach Olivier Delaitre proudly singing along.

Anna Kubareva couldn’t have wished for a better return to junior tennis after playing only pro events in the last three years. After a somewhat slow start, where she had to go the full distance twice, she improved match by match. She lost only nine games in her next three matches and also started strong in the final. But Caijsa Hennemann wasn’t preoccupied after the quick loss of the first set. After all, she had come from behind several times in the week, including in the round of 16 where she had been trailing 1-6 0-4. She showed her never say die attitude once again and held three set points to force the decider but was unable to convert any of them. In a sea-saw tiebreaker, Kubareva eventually prevailed.

There are definitely worse countries for Royer to play tennis in than Switzerland. The week before the European Championships, he won the Grade 2 event in Oberentfelden for a second straight year, and he followed that by considerably improving on last year’s performance - when he took the bronze medal - in Klosters. “I love to play in Switzerland and am very happy for the support of the fans. Merci, Thank you.”

Czech Republic & Russia on top at Nations Challenge by HEAD
s Chall
Russia (girls) and Czech Republic (boys) are the new champions of the Tennis Europe Nations Challenge by HEAD. This was the Czechs’ third appearance in a boys’ final, and first win, while the Russian girls extended their tally to six titles from twelve editions of the 12 & Under team competition. The Russian boys also fared well, finishing as runners-up to the Czechs, while Slovakia were the girls’ finalists. The final rounds were held in France, with the boys’ teams travelling to Dijon, while the girls played in Ajaccio. A total of 61 national teams had taken part in the qualifying competition a fortnight before. The top two teams from each of the four qualifying groups progressed to the finals, where the eight teams were split into two groups of four in a round-robin format from Thursday to Saturday before Sunday’s final and placement matches.
Boys champions Czech Republic.
GIRLS’ FINAL After qualifying top of their respective round-robin groups, final debutantes Slovakia took on Russia, who were playing in their eighth final. In a dominant performance, the Russian onslaught was unrelenting. Alina Korneeva beat Lucia Hradecka 6-1 6-2 in the opening rubber, after which Mirra Andreeva shut out Renata Jamrichova. Korneeva & Victoria Milovanova made it a clean sweep for the Russians, making light work of Hradecka & Vanessa Novakova in the doubles for a 3-0 win.
BOYS’ FINAL Russia is the only nation ever to have won both the boy’s and girls’ event in the same year (2012), but the boys’ team from the Czech Republic was in no mood to allow a repeat of that feat. The team was in control from the outset, as Jam Kumstat fought off a gallant Ilya Maltsev for a 6-4 7-6(5) win. Maxim Mrva was too strong for Timofei Derepasko, posting a 6-4 6-2 win to secure the trophy. The doubles was won by the same scoreline as Mrva returned to court with Sebastian Chodura to undo Derepasko & Egor Pleshivtsev.

Czech Republic & Switzerland claim 14&U Summer Cups titles

The Czech Republic won this year’s Boys’ 14&U European Summer Cups, beating defending champions France 2-1 in the final in Murcia, Spain to take home the Copa del Sol. This was their second win from as many final appearances, having last won in 2003. Meanwhile, in San Remo, Italy, team Switzerland, playing in its first ever final, won a maiden Europa Cup, seeing off the defending champions in a come-from-behind 2-1 victory. A total of 64 national teams took part in this year’s competition. Both defending champions managed to return to the finals with completely new teams. The Czechs looked especially strong, being the only nation to qualify for both the boys’ and girls’’ final rounds. Such is their might that they were also represented in both finals.

Antoine Ghibaudo started the title defence with a 4-6 6-1 6-1 win over Lukas Velik to put the French boys up 1-0. Vojtech Petr, winner of three Category 1 events this year including Les Petis As, put the Czechs back at 1-1 as he eased past Gariel Debru 6-1 6-1. Petr then teamed up with Jakub Mensik in the all-important deciding doubles rubber. The Czechs got off to a flying start, winning the first set to love. The French boys were in no mood to relinquish their title so easily, however. With more consistent play, they showed plenty of grit and really took the second set to the Czechs. In the end, it was not enough, as Petr and Mensik sealed the match 6-0 7-5 to clinch the title 2-1 for the Czech Republic.
GIRLS - EUROPA CUP Qualifying Rounds
Both Czech Republic and Switzerland came through the same qualifying group Zone B played in Rakovnik (CZE). The Czechs had trounced Slovenia 3-0 and then beat Germany 2-1, while the Swiss girls defeated Israel 2-1 followed by a 3-0 whitewash of Croatia. The qualifying final came down to a championship tiebreak in the deciding doubles rubber, which the Swiss took 10-5, to qualify above the Czechs for the final rounds and ensured that the two nations would be in opposite halves of the draw.
Final Rounds - San Remo, Italy
Coming into the final rounds in San Remo, Russia looked to be in intimidating form, on a 9-0 match winning streak, not having lost one match in any of the qualifying rounds. They were taken out at the first hurdle by the Czechs, however, in the deciding doubles rubber. The Czechs strengthened and full of confidence, then ousted Ukraine 3-0 in the semi-finals. The Swiss dismissed the forlorn host nation 3-0 in the quarters and followed this up with a tense 10-8 championship tie break win in the live doubles rubber over Greece in the semis. their crown. Nikola Bartunkova got things rolling for the Czechs, putting them ahead after the first rubber with a 3-6 6-4 7-5 win over Karolina Kozakova, reversing the result of their tussle in the qualifying rounds. Celine Naef levelled things for the Swiss, exacting revenge on Kristyna Tomajkova 7-5 6-4 in the second singles match. Naef had teamed with Anina Lanz in their earlier doubles win over Italy, but in the final she was to play with Kozakova. The Swiss pair was too solid for the Czech combination of Bartunkova & Brenda Fruhvirtova, taking the match 6-4 6-4 and claiming the tie and the trophy 2-1. The final rounds of the 14&U Summer Cups also serve as European qualifying for the ITF World Junior Tennis competition, which took place in Prostejov (CZE) from 5-10 August. The top 5 boys’ and girls’ teams (*), plus hosts Czech Republic, qualified to compete in Prostejov. France and Russia have won the boys’ and girls’ 16&U European Summer Cups titles. It is the twelfth ‘Borotra Cup’ title for the French, while the Russian girls lifted the trophy for a ninth time. After 64 teams took part in eight qualifying events across the continent the culmination of the event saw the top eight qualifying boys’ and girls’ teams playing for the Cups in Le Touquet and Budapest respectively. France and Belarus successfully defended the 18&U European Summer Cups titles after a week of competition which saw 40 national teams in action across seven qualifying venues. The top eight qualifiers battled for the prestigious team titles at two venues in France over three days.
Boys’ Finals - La Rochelle (FRA) France were three-time defending champions and strong pre-tournament favourites as the top seeds and playing with a home advantage. Since 1991, they have made a whopping fifteen finals appearances, including a total of eight wins and seven runner-up finishes. Italy has won just one title, back in 2013, when they beat who else? - France.
Girls 18&U champions Belarus.
With wins over Germany and the Czech Republic, France made it through to a fourth straight final. They would meet Italy, who had seen off Great Britain and Slovakia to set up a final between the competition’s top two seeds.
FINAL France 2 - Italy 1
The home team got off to a one rubber to nil lead in the final, although it was hotly disputed. Kyrian Jacquet defeated Francesco Passaro 7-5 3-6 6-4. Harold Mayot had an easier win over Matteo Arnaldi 6-0 7-5. With the result beyond doubt, Passaro and Jacquet faced each other again in the doubles partnered by Filippo Moroni and European 18&U Junior Champion Valentin Royer respectively. The French were not able to make it a clean sweep though, with the Italian pair taking the dead rubber 6-4 7-5.
Girls Finals - Granville (FRA) Belarus won their maiden title in 2018, having reached the final on one previous occasion. Slovakia were also one-time champions in 2012, and two-time finalists.

level the tie at one rubber apiece. After two thrilling three-set tussles, all four players came back on court for a mighty battle for the trophy. After a close first set loss, the Belarusians won the second as well as a thrilling championship tiebreak to keep the trophy in their hands for another year, the final score of 5-7 6-4 11-9 indicative of the fighting spirit shown by both teams.
Final Standings
The Slovaks took out Hungary in the quarterfinals and then saw off the challenge of Great Britain, who were coming off an upset of second seeds Russia, in the semi-finals. Although unseeded, Belarus remained on track to defend their title, defeating top seeds France in the quarter finals and then beating third seeds Spain for a place in the final.

In-Albon and Piros triumph at 21&U Invitational Zsombor Piros of Hungary and Ylena In-Albon of Switzerland are the champions of the inaugural Tennis Europe 21 & Under Invitational tournament. The event was held to coincide with the ATP 500 Hamburg European Open in Germany and was a unique cooperation between Tennis Europe, the Hamburg organisers and the German Tennis Federation, designed to give promising young men and women experience of big matches, star treatment, and the chance to win financial grants to help with their career development and travel expenses. In-Albon managed to avenge a five-set defeat at the round robin stage to Ilona Ghioroaie of Romania to take the title. Having taken a first set tie break, she eased to a 4-3(1) 4-0 4-2 win to end the tournament with four wins and one loss.
Winners and runners-up.
Piros swept to victory in a one-sided boys’ final, conceding just two games to Poland’s Daniel Michalski. Michalski had looked impressive in his semi-final against junior world #2, wild card Holger Rune of Denmark, but couldn’t reproduce that form as he went down to the Hungarian for the second time in four days. Having met in the round-robin phase, Piros was well-prepared and dominated for a 4-2 4-0 4-0 victory. Both men and women played best-of-five set matches with a shorter format; sets were played as First to Four games with a tie-break at 3-All, and ‘No-Ad’ scoring (receiver decides). Additionally, the ‘No Let’ rule was in place, and players were able to communicate with their

ITF & Tennis Europe Announce Enhancements to Junior Player Pathway
The International Tennis Federation (ITF) and Tennis Europe have announced an enhanced pathway between the 16 & Under Tennis Europe Junior Tour and the 18 & Under ITF World Tennis Tour Juniors to further opportunities for the best junior talent in Europe.
the transition for juniors within this region, and we are looking to expand this initiative in discussion with our other Regional Associations. We will continue to optimise the structures that will allow our junior players to maximise their potential and talent.”
From 2020, reserved places in the main draws of ITF Junior tournaments in Europe will be available for players based on their Tennis Europe ranking.
Tennis Europe Junior Committee Chair, Eva-Maria Schneider commented: “We would like to underline the importance of a beneficial pathway for our young players. 16 & Under tournaments have traditionally struggled to attract top players as many of them try to jump directly to the 18 & Under circuit. With this project, 16 & Unders are rewarded for playing age-appropriate events, and we are better able to support them on their path to ITF Junior tournaments.”
This system will extend the ITF player pathway within Europe and create a clear link between regional and global competition, while ensuring that junior players are playing at the most appropriate level to optimise their development. The criteria for reserved places will depend on the Grade of tournament and will only be available to players aged 15 and 16 – with players aged 14 and under encouraged to continue playing in Tennis Europe events in the best interests of their long-term development. ITF President David Haggerty welcomed the pathway enhancements, saying: “The ITF is committed to providing a clear and efficient pathway, maximising opportunities for the most talented players to progress. This new partnership with Tennis Europe will support
This announcement comes after the successful introduction of junior reserved places at the $15,000 event level of the ITF World Tennis Tour. Reserved places have allowed junior players who have earned a high ITF junior ranking through their performance at junior level to contest professional events and in many cases helped them to establish themselves at this higher level. So far in 2019, 450 players have taken up junior reserved main draw places with 9 tournament winners and 51 instances of a player reaching the semifinal or better.

European Senior Championships in Pörtschach The biggest-ever edition of the European Senior Championships was held in Pörtschach Austria, where 350 players were in action across all age categories from Over 35 to Over 85. He was pushed to the limit against world #2 Luca Serena (ITA) in the first set of their final before eventually claiming a 7-6(9) 6-3 win. French teams dominated the men’s events, picking up three of the four available titles. The exception was the ‘home’ team from CT Murcia, who successfully defended the Men’s 35s title.

Russia and Italy clinch European Beach Tennis Championship titles Russian and Italian teams dominated the European Beach Tennis Championships in Kranevo (BUL), winning 8 of the 9 available medals on Sunday’s final day of action. World #1 Nikita Burmakin teamed with Sergey Kuptsov to give Russia its first ever European men’s doubles title. The Russian third seeds had strolled through to the semi-finals, where they outlasted top seeds Doriano Beccaccioli & Davide Benussi in the match of the tournament, eventually prevailing with a marathon 7-6(5) 3-6 6-4 win. Playing their second consecutive final, Burmakin & Kuptsov faced Spaniards Antomi Ramos & Gerard Rodriguez, who had ended the run of another Russian team, Nikolai Gurev & Ivan Syrov in their semi. A hotly contested final saw Burmakin & Kuptsov win 6-4 7-6(6) to secure the historic victory. Speaking after the win, a delighted Burmakin commented, “We are very happy to have finally won here - I’ve been trying for seven years. We won the mixed doubles once, but the dream has always been to win the men’s. Last year we got very close, and the scenario was repeated, with a very tough semi-final before we managed to hold on today. After this, we’re looking forward to more victories.” The final marked the first time in the 12 editions of the tournament that no Italian team contested the men’s final. In contrast, the women’s event produced an all-Ital-

Both defending champions were back in the final, but this time on opposite sides of the net as Sofia Cimatti teamed with 2017 champion Gulia Gasparri, while Flaminia Daina paired with Nicole Nobile. Cimatti has now won 4 of last 5 European women’s titles, while Gasparri picks her second win from five consecutive finals. The mixed doubles provided more silverware for Italy, and a measure of revenge for Daina over her victor in the women’s final, as she teamed with Doriano Baccaccioli for a 6-4 6-2 win over Cimatti and Tommaso Giovannini. Italy therefore topped the Nations Ranking at the end of the event, just as it has in each previous edition. However, Russia’s success produced the closest ever chase to the spot, with Spain finishing third. 126 players from 19 Tennis Europe member nations took part in the event, which was hosted by the Bulgarian Tennis Federation from 5-8 September, and was preceded by special junior competitions for the 14 and 18 & Under age groups. Tennis Europe Junior Tour Rankings - Overall Tennis Europe’s junior ranking system is devised to give a unified overall list that shows the relative strengths of all players, regardless of where they achieved their results or picked up points. A player’s overall total includes points from Tennis Europe Junior Tour 16 and 14 & Under events, plus points earned by players in these age categories who participate in ITF Junior Circuit and professional tournaments, all of which are weighted according to their relative strengths. The 14
& Under ranking is still available separately (see next page), as well as being integrated to these overall rankings. For more information on the rankings system, check out the Tennis Europe Junior Tour Rules and Regulations at www.TennisEurope.org. The ‘Race to the Masters’ rankings are also available separately, and include points earned exclusively at Tennis Europe Junior Tour events. Rankings below are as of Tuesday 24th September, 2019 .
