Heritage & Strategic Theme 2008 - 2012
Tennis NT Heritage Tennis NT was established in 1980 under the incorporated name of the Northern Territory Tennis Council. The organisation changed its identity in 2005 to Tennis NT Incorporated and trades simply as Tennis NT. Its establishment was the shared vision of the founding President, Mr Max Horton OAM and a small group of interested tennis players. Their vision foresaw the need for a ‘parent body’ to assume a role of guidance along with the benefits of establishing relationships with the Northern Territory Government and Tennis Australia. Tennis NT Values Conduct business in an open transparent manner providing equal opportunity. Tennis NT Strategic Intent Champions More champions and depth across all levels • Identify and provide opportunities for talented athletes • Train talented athletes to become champions • Attract, develop and retain the best coaches • Offer the best competition environments to develop champions Infrastructure More and better infrastructure • Support commercially-operated facilities and guide volunteer-based facilities • Improve the quality of the experience delivered by tennis facilities • Source funding opportunities for facilities to improve tennis infrastructure • Encourage and support the development of new facilities where they are needed most • Monitor, maintain and improve court and equipment standards Grassroots Building and delivering (more) effectively to ‘grassroots’ • Adopt an appropriate national registration program • Increase the number and depth of engagement of active players • Increase the number and depth of engagement of devoted fans • Monetise both devoted fans and active players Governance Effective policy, finance and administrative structures • Ensure organisation is compliant with NT Associations Act • Provide an environment that will retain human resources • Build key stakeholder relationships • Ensure ‘best practice’ financial management is conducted 3

President Report
Why is slamming a ball with a racquet so obsessive a pleasure for so many of us? It seems clear to me that a primary attraction of tennis is the opportunity it gives to release aggression physically without being arrested for felonious assault.1 In 2009 we had the great fortune to experience Pro Tour tennis in the Top End. Darwin was fated with two men’s and two women’s international events. We were privileged to witness the comeback of Alicia Molik, who put it all together in the first event and took out the final against Sally Peers. In the second event, one of our cousins from across the ditch, Sacha Jones, defeated Bojana Bobusic. In the men’s, the first event went to Dayne Kelly, who defeated Scotland’s Jamie Baker. However, Jamie took his revenge in the second event by defeating Queenslander John Millman. In 2010, the Pro Tour returns to Darwin and Alice Springs. Our NT juniors continue to go gangbusters with top-flight efforts in the “Nationals”. Our own ‘Chooky’ Dunser pulled off the singles and doubles titles in the 14’s Girls Grasscourt Nationals, won the
doubles in the Claycourt Nationals and was runnerup in the singles. Emily Webb won the 14s doubles in the Winter Nationals. In the boys, Ben Lye and Kaelan Bates made their first final on the grass in Mildura. In the “wheelies”, Tom O’Neill-Thorne did us proud by finishing equal fourth in the Australian Paralympic Youth Games. On a personal level, it was a great thrill to referee most of the local events this year. On the facilities front, it is great news to hear Gove and Alice Springs turning Aussie Open Blue. In closing, my thanks go to the very professional staff at Tennis NT, the wonderful volunteer officials and the army of mums and dads who do all the catering for our tournaments. Warren Martin President 1

Manager Report
Tennis NT has delivered a healthy surplus for the 2009-10 reporting period. This position was achieved because of additional sponsorships, a 20 per cent increase in the NT Government Grant, and further distributions from Tennis Australia that had not been budgeted. This level will reduce in the next reporting period relevant to structural changes and additional program delivery.
The development of a fully ITF-compliant centre that can house Tennis NT’s administration and become a home for major events remains our facility priority. Tennis NT has its eye on the old netball site at Parap, and is engaging the relevant stakeholders to make this vision a reality.
The budget is designed to deliver a wide range of services to meet the needs of our isolated tennis community and improve the capacity of its service providers.
Gove Peninsula Tennis Club became the first Territory club to lay the Australian Open colour ‘blue’ courts and access Tennis Australia’s National Court Rebate Scheme. The Alice Springs Tennis Association followed shortly after, with the announcement by Sports Minister Karl Hampton and Alice Springs Town Council that their centre would be upgraded to host the 2010 Alice Springs Tennis International. ASTA President Tony Jennison and his team rose magnificently to the challenge of the project, and now boast a redeveloped ‘blue’ facility, all completed within 12 months from concept to delivery. Well done Alice Springs!
It is pleasing to note the 18.85 per cent increase in participant registrations – we will be aiming to maintain this trend as well as improve our communication to all of our stakeholders.
Construction should start on the tennis facility in Palmerston by November after lengthy negotiations with Government to ensure it met community tennis requirements.
Kassandra Dunser continues to fly the NT flag both nationally and internationally. Kassandra is a credit to herself, her family and the coaches who have nurtured her along her journey. Kassandra has truly earned her featured front cover of this report!
Tennis Australia’s introductory program, MLC Tennis Hot Shots, is gaining traction in the NT with four registered deliverers. Nationally the program has exceeded all expectations by reaching more than 169,000 children. This is a great success story for tennis.
The subsequent increase in reserves will contribute to tennis’ bargaining position when negotiating its new centre. Tennis NT considers the interest from its reserves is its only fixed income, and therefore these reserves are an important aspect of the organisation’s risk management policies.

Manager Report
With the welcome addition of a new staff member, Tennis NT undertook a comprehensive review of its organisational structure and individual responsibilities. Jamie Stefanato joined us in May as part of Tennis Australia’s initiative to put ‘feet on the ground’ across the country to fast-track the promotion of our sport. Jamie hit the ground running, and enthusiastically absorbs the tasks thrown his way. Tennis Australia’s investment is applauded – it has already made an impact in the Territory.
I am energised by the “team” that is now Australia wide. I have been a sports administrator since 1982, most of that time with tennis in a formal capacity. I believe I can comment with a fair amount of experience that I have never seen the structure and depth more solid across the country. The rewards will be reaped. I urge patience and solidarity from the tennis population and its stakeholders. Di MacDonald Manager
Mark Pead continues to grow in his role as it evolves around the many structural changes necessitated by both staff and program changes. After 10 years of loyal, inspiring and intuitive service, Robyn Stanley resigned to pursue her triathlon dreams on the world stage. Thankfully Robyn remains part of the tennis team on a ‘casual’ basis, slotted between the gruelling triumphs of 3.8km swims, 180km cycles and 42km runs – the ingredients of her triathlon passion.

National Academy Partnership Tennis Australia continues its support for Northern Territory player development through a Service Agreement arrangement with Tennis NT. This Agreement ensures Territory athletes have access to the National Academy Program. These services are provided by the Adelaide Academy and are conducted by Athlete Development Manager, Rohan Fisher. Rohan visits regularly to work with players, consult with coaches and parents, and also provide services to talented players through the VAP (Video Analysis Program). This program is aimed at 8-11 year olds.
Rohan Fisher
Rohan works closely with the NTIS to deliver the Institute program. His passion for the success of Northern Territory athletes is evidenced by his continuous hard work. Northern Territory Institute of Sport (NTIS) The NTIS is the NT Government’s Centre of Sporting Excellence for the identification, development and support of the Territory’s talented athletes and coaches. The aim of the NTIS is to develop Northern Territory athletes into champions. Tennis’ application was successful for inclusion into the 2009-2013 Program that commenced on 1 July 2009. The Tennis Program, launched in 1996, represents a major success story for Northern Territory sport. This achievement acknowledges the talent and commitment of the tennis athletes and their families, Athlete Development Manager Rohan Fisher, and the coaches and clubs who support and conduct the underpinning programs that "feed" players into the NTIS. The squad members are selected on the basis of meeting stringent selection criteria combined with Tennis NT’s Selections Committee decisions. There is a demanding training schedule that is individually designed and can see players on the court for up to 21 hours a week, as well as a gym program. The combined skills of the tennis community and the NTIS sports scientists create an environment that develops committed young athletes into individuals who are able to achieve their tennis potential. The following group were selected as the 2009-10 NTIS Athletes.

Many thanks go to Belinda Colaneri from Tennis Australia’s Coach Education team, who contributes so much to the success of the education of our future coaches. Belinda is tireless in her endeavours to ensure there are successful conclusions for the course participants. Belinda is a Club Professional Coach who is currently undertaking her High Performance Coach qualification. Tennis NT acknowledges Club Professional Coaches Benita Bittner and Warren Foote, who delivered the OTC courses in Alice Springs and Katherine respectively. Six Professional Development Workshops were also conducted for coaches. A total of 51 coaches participated in these Workshops. Craig Gallagher from Alice Springs travelled on a regular basis to Adelaide to complete his Club Professional Coach qualification. Craig successfully completed the course.
Matt Ansell, also from Alice Springs, travelled to Adelaide to participate in the JDC Course, and was supported by Tennis Alice Springs and the Indigenous Sport Program through Tennis NT. Eight members of the Northern Territory tennis coaching fraternity travelled to the 2010 Australian Grand Slam Coaches Conference. This is an extraordinary representation from our small tennis community, and Tennis NT acknowledges these coaches for their personal commitment and their thirst for knowledge. Pat Coburn, DTC Sports, continues to sponsor the host venue for coach education courses. His support and flexibility in the use of his centre is greatly appreciated.

Nationally, there is a training pathway for officials which can ultimately take individuals to a full-time career in officiating. The following is a quotable quote from chair umpire Tom Sweeney: “Tennis officiating is now my full-time profession. Events Calendar The NT had another busy tournament schedule which was enhanced by the sudden and unexpected opportunity of hosting two Pro Tour tournaments in September 2009. These additions to our calendar certainly ‘shone’ the spotlight on tennis in our region. An analysis of Australian Ranking tournaments conducted in the Northern Territory is being undertaken. It should be noted that there is growing concern regarding the reducing competitor numbers. A review of formats, events within tournaments, pricing and timing will be undertaken leading into 2011 to try and rectify this trend. Analysis The following table indicates the number of entries each level of tournament attracted. A total of 982 points opportunities were accessed.

Pro Tour The Pro Tour is a series of professional ATP and WTA tournaments conducted in Australia that act as a springboard to the global tennis stage by providing vital World Ranking Points and experience for the tennis stars of tomorrow. In its first year on the Australian Pro Tour Calendar, the Northern Territory conducted two back-toback tournaments in Darwin during September 2009. These tournaments launched the Australian Pro Tour Circuit for 2009 and attracted 246 competitors. Countries represented included Australia, China, Germany, Great Britain, Indonesia, Japan, New Zealand, Solomon Islands, Switzerland and the United States of America. Northern Territory competitors were Kassandra Dunser, Tarlina Tipungwuti, Emily Webb, Nicholas Munro and Ryan Palfrey. Tennis NT acknowledges the generous support of the Northern Territory Government and the investment of Tennis Australia in bringing these tournaments to the Top End. A three-year deal was negotiated between the two parties that guarantees the two tournaments will remain in the Northern Territory up to and including 2011.
Special thanks go to the small but loyal team of locals and Tennis Australia officials. All worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the tournaments. The local group included: Jordan Goldberg, Kay Field, Warren Foote, Gordon and Pierrette McGregor, Warren Martin, Sandra Smiles and the many ball kids who assisted through the finals series. Our congratulations are extended to all. The OJT is an umbrella tour that provides a competition pathway for aspiring junior tennis players. These tournaments offer Australian Ranking Points across the 12/U, 14/U and 16/U age groups with selected tournaments also offering points in the 18/U age group. In 2010 OJT was re-branded similar to the AMTs into five levels, Platinum (also known as the Optus National Junior Championships), Gold, Silver, Bronze and White. The Northern Territory conducted one Silver, four Bronze and five White OJT tournaments during the reporting period. Of these 10 OJT tournaments, 16 events offered Australian Ranking Points across the four age groups. A total of 514 entries were received in these tournaments.

Power and Water ITF Junior Circuit
Principal sponsor Power and Water combined with co-sponsor Darwin City Council, plus a number of minor sponsors (acknowledged in Our Partners section of this report), to host the last ITF Junior Circuit tournaments conducted in the NT. 2009 heralded the end of an era for the two tournaments. Introducing an ITF Junior Circuit tournament to Darwin in 1990 was the brain-child of a former Vice-President of Tennis NT and President of the Darwin Tennis Association, Mr Horry Kneebone (now deceased). His inspiration in establishing a Grade 5 ITF Junior Circuit tournament through direct contact to the ITF eventually transitioned to two Grade 3 tournaments. Horry would have been pleased with this result.
Many, many people along the way contributed to the success and evolution of the tournaments. In the early days, the single tournament struggled, but with persistence and dedication of volunteers, it eventually grew in status and popularity and achieved Grade 3 status with an added back-toback tournament. Various marketing tools were used over the years to achieve this result.
In 2001, Tennis Australia came to the assistance of Tennis NT by providing a Tournament Director from their staff. This was in response to the growth of the tournaments and a tightening of the rules and regulations by the ITF. Thus began the partnership between Tennis Australia and Tennis NT which continued until the final tournaments in 2009. As always the dedicated team of volunteers, officials and staff ensured at the conclusion of the tournaments, the players went away wanting to return! These people are acknowledged: Referees Court Supervisors
Marcia O’Shea Lisa O’Shea Jordan Goldberg Leonie Lewis Pierrette McGregor Gordon McGregor Pip March Rachel Webb Warren Martin
As this is the last report for these tournaments, it is important that special acknowledgement goes to the O’Shea family from Melbourne. Marcia became the Referee in 2002 and remained in that position to the finish. This is probably not extraordinary to those who know Marcia. However, the value-added benefits to the Northern Territory tournaments were her family’s involvement. Husband Mark and daughters Lisa and Donna became the mainstays of support for the eight years that Marcia refereed. The local NT contingent that was involved over those years knows we could not have done it without them. Tennis NT acknowledges the O’Shea family for becoming bona-fide Territorians for two weeks in July each year and always going beyond expectations. We thank them.

131008 Darwin Radio Taxi Darwin & NT Age Titles With vital Australian Ranking points on offer in these back to back tournaments, the Darwin Age Titles and NT Age Titles attracted 114 competitors from across the Northern Territory and interstate. Attracting interstate players is always beneficial for our local juniors to provide a varied competitive and social environment. Tennis NT would like to acknowledge the support of naming rights Sponsor, 131 008 Darwin Radio Taxi, and appreciates the support of this new partnership. Cornucopia Museum CafĂŠ continued as co-sponsor for the second year. We thank these two companies for their support of junior tennis. DTC Sports Manager Pat Coburn continued in his role as Tournament Director, while the role of Referee was shared between Warren Martin and Sam Giess. Tennis NT acknowledges their tireless efforts.

Infrastructure
The Northern Territory had a busy year with advancement of facility developments in Northern, Southern and Metropolitan Regions. The Gove Peninsula Tennis Club created two firsts: the first Territory club to receive Tennis Australia’s National Court Rebate Scheme grant, which then enabled the club to be the first to lay the Australian Open coloured blue courts in the NT. Club coach Nicky Mayer reported an amazing response to their first tournament played on the new courts. Clearly the “blue” has enhanced the awareness of tennis in the small mining town of Nhulunbuy.
Day 3
Congratulations to Nicky and the club for pursuing this redevelopment, which also included a dedicated Hot Shots court. This is the transformation.

Infrastructure
Following closely behind Gove, tennis was most grateful to Sports and Recreation Minister Karl Hampton, who announced in April 2010 a major redevelopment of the Alice Springs Tennis Association (ASTA) courts to upgrade their 10 courts to the “blue” Plexipave surface. This was a $400,000 project undertaken by ASTA, led by President Tony Jennison. The funding partnership included ASTA, the Alice Springs Town Council, the NT Government, Tennis Australia and Tennis NT. Construction started in June 2010 and was completed a month ahead of schedule enabling Tennis Alice Springs management, Craig Gallagher and Adrian Scholtes to ‘get back to business’ in preparation for their heavy tournament schedule that includes a Pro Tour event, Masters Games and the Red Centre Open. The new courts will be a major boost to the tennis community in Alice Springs.
It would be remiss not to acknowledge the efforts of Adam Renfrey, Tennis SA’s Community Tennis Manager, whose guidance and assistance led to the connection with Lynton Franzi from SPORTDEV AUSTRALIA who managed the project. ASTA and Tennis NT are grateful for this expertise and the generous nature in which it was offered. Not to be left out, the Metropolitan Region was represented by Palmerston in the infrastructure drive. Negotiations continued to try to find a compromise for the Palmerston tennis/ netball facility off the back of the 2008 Election Commitment made to tennis. With a consultation process convened by the NT Government, the outcome for both sports was a great result. Tennis eventually secured seven dedicated tennis courts and a clubhouse capable of housing a combination community/commercial operation that will benefit tennis in Palmerston. Tennis NT continues to lobby for a home and headquarters for tennis that provides a facility that is ITF-compliant and capable of hosting major events plus house its administration. This campaign has been on the books since 2003. It will stay there until our vision is realised.

Grassroots
Tennis Australia supports Grassroots Tennis across the Country The Board of Tennis Australia announced a program to fund the appointment of additional development staff across the country to increase ‘feet on the ground’ to deliver Community Tennis activities. Tennis NT benefited from this program and subsequently appointed Jamie Stefanato from Adelaide to the position of Development Coordinator. Player Registration The registration trend continues to improve (18.85 per cent increase on last year’s figures), which is a pleasing result. It is extremely important that tennis promotes its participation accurately as this information is always considered by our major financial contributors, in particular the NT Government and Tennis Australia.
Historically, it has always been difficult to capture the individual’s personal details. The administration and usefulness of the data then becomes challenging.
Centre Managers Workshop Arguably one of the most successful workshops was conducted in early March 2010, with 15 participants over the two days. The forum was informative as well as being interactive. The networking provided an opportunity for the group to exchange ideas, review current programs and receive some professional development. Craig Tiley, Tennis Director Tennis Australia, attended which created an engaging session. Craig was able to simplify tennis’ goals into what he called the “four C’s” of tennis: “courts, competitions, coaches, champions” The group acknowledged the meaningful simplicity of this statement, but acknowledged the complexity of its delivery. Perhaps the fifth “C” is the challenge. The NT is up for it!
Centre Managers Workshop
At the end of this reporting period, Tennis NT had not gone ‘live’ with My Tennis, which is the new national platform for registering participants. This software is expected to be operational within the next few months. 36

Regional Development Program
The Power and Water Corporation generously supports the Regional Development Program. Permanent signage acknowledging this partnership has been erected at DTC Sports, the Gove Peninsula Tennis Club, Katherine Tennis Club and Alice Springs Tennis Association. Craig Tiley officially launched the program while in Darwin in March 2010. Tiley said: “This program enables regional clubs to value-add to their development models which ultimately provide tennis opportunities for young people across the Northern Territory.
The Northern and Southern Region MOUs have produced very pleasing results, including activities in outlying areas around Gove and Tennant Creek respectively. Unfortunately, the Central Region MOU had to be revoked due to poor performance by the coach. The Katherine Tennis Club is to be applauded at the way this issue was handled. The Committee, led by President Kathy Brummitt had to make some hard decisions to ensure the club could return to its former happy environment. This objective was achieved using great resolve and resilience. Thereafter, Tennis NT undertook a series of development activities and programs, outsourced to various coaches, to service the Central Region. As part of a Regions Roadshow, DTC Sports Club Professional Coach Pat Coburn and Tennis NT Development Coordinator Jamie Stefanato travelled to Jabiru and Katherine to deliver MLC Tennis Hot Shots and provide some professional development for the local deliverers. As reported elsewhere in this report, Warren Foote presented an Orientation to Coaching Course to eight Katherine Tennis Club members and followed up with a mentoring program a month later.
Launch of Power and Water Parnership
Accountability for the program delivery partners is managed by way of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). Three MOUs were signed during the reporting period with obligations including participant registration, MLC Tennis Hot Shots delivery and indigenous and disabilities tennis activities.

MLC Tennis Hot Shots This is Tennis Australia’s official starter program and is aimed at children 5 -12 years of age. Smaller courts, nets, racquets and low-compression balls make learning easy and give younger players the chance to play the game of tennis. Tennis NT is pleased to announce there are four MLC Tennis Hot Shots deliverers in the Northern Territory. Metropolitan: Pat Coburn Northern: Nicky Mayer Central: Lisa Alexander Southern: Craig Gallagher There were 932 participants in the program for the 2009-10 reporting period. The NT is looking to blitz these figures in 2010-11 with the added resources provided by Tennis Australia including promotional material and, most importantly, someone who is dedicated to coordinating the program, namely Development Coordinator Jamie Stefanato. Jamie has been instrumental in piloting a lunch-time MLC Tennis Hot Shots program in schools supported by Pat Coburn and Ben Milner. This initiative has proven to be an outstanding success and has been well received by both teachers and students. Clearly the benefit is that the students who really want to participate are the ones who take part.
The MLC Tennis Hot Shots program has been used as a promotional activity to co-exist with major events in the NT. This format will be more heavily promoted going forward.
MLC Tennis Hot Shots
Indigenous Tennis Program Tennis Gove’s Nicky Mayer continues to include Indigenous Tennis programs in her schedule, both locally and remotely in Tennis NT’s Northern Region. Nicky has established an ongoing relationship with the Yirrkala School, where approximately 20 students regularly participate in tennis activities both at the club and at school.

An Indigenous Tennis Program grant was received from Tennis Australia to conduct tennis activities on Groote Eylandt. Due to the court redevelopment at the Gove Peninsula Tennis Club, Nicky was unavailable to travel. This program has been deferred to the next reporting period. Club Professional Coach Dennis Scrutton conducted another program at the Sanderson Middle School in Term 2 2010 which will be completed in Term 3. Between 10 -15 girls aged 12-13 years participated. The Sanderson Middle School program eventuated because of the cancellation of the St John’s College program, where the interest could not be sustained. The program was pitched at girls in a deliberately separate environment.
As reported under “Coach Development”, Matt Ansell was supported through the Indigenous Tennis Program to attend the JDC Course in Adelaide. Darwin’s Nathan Hawke now attends Box Hill Senior Secondary College in Victoria as a recipient of the Evonne Goolagong Scholarship Program. Nathan was awarded the Scholarship after impressing both Evonne and her husband Roger at the Goolagong National Development Camp in January. Nathan and his family are strong supporters of tennis at the Gardens Tennis Complex.
Nathan Hawke Indigenous Tennis - Sanderson
The Indigenous Tennis Program was further extended to include an elite coaching program that was funded by the Australian Sports Commission Indigenous Sport Program. DTC Sports’ Stephanie Long was the recipient of additional coaching. This certainly paid off for Stephanie as she was a direct acceptance into the 2010 Optus Winter Nationals in Brisbane. Stephanie performed very well with two singles wins in the Consolation draw.
Four other indigenous athletes from NT attended the Development Camp with Nathan. They were: Tarlina Tipungwuti and Stephanie Long from Darwin, and Jessica Ah Chee and Kyle Hampton from Alice Springs. The camp was held in Melbourne in the lead up to the Australian Open.

Disability Tennis Program Two programs were conducted that enabled opportunities for participation both nationally and locally. Tom O’Neill-Thorne benefited from some additional coaching, equipment and travel support to enable him to compete in the Australian Paralympic Youth Games held in Melbourne in October 2009. Tom was one of seven athletes competing, and he finished the competition in fourth position, narrowly missing out on a bronze medal by only two games. This was Tom’s first experience playing at a national level against athletes of a similar age and standard.
Coaching program for five to eight participants during Terms 3 and 4 2009 and Term 2 2010. The program proved to be a great success which was evidenced by the enthusiasm of the group to participate each week. Nicky said “ … their skill level was quite remarkable given their disability”.
Tom is coached at DTC Sports and plays in the Saturday morning junior competition. It is testament to the centre’s visionary thinking that Tom competes in the mainstream competition and is embraced by all the juniors. Tennis Gove’s Nicky Mayer conducted an ID

tennis.com.au/nt The website is used as a means of communication and marketing specifically relating to successes, and also program and events promotion. On average 623 hits were recorded monthly over this reporting period, compared to the 2008-09 monthly average of 547, an increase of 13.9 per cent. This medium will be improved once Tennis Australia introduces the new website platform. It is anticipated the new format will be more user friendly and less ‘busy’.
Australian Tennis Magazine At the start of 2010, Tennis Australia purchased the Australian Tennis Magazine. Four contributions were made by Tennis NT to the ‘Grassroots’ section of this magazine, however this section ceased at the end of 2009 and was replaced by a monthly feature ‘Club of the Month’ which saw 2008-09 NT Club of the Year, DTC Sports featured in its second issue. The publication provides opportunity for the tennis community in general to submit articles.
Territory Tennis Talk (e-newsletter) Five e-newsletters were circulated to an ever increasing database of Tennis NT registered players. On average 1,159 e-newsletters were delivered. Territory Tennis Talk gives a brief overview of current news and information. It is hoped the continuation of this e-newsletter will strengthen our marketing of programs and events, and acknowledgement of achievements. Tennis Partners Christmas Function On Tuesday 1 December 2009, a Christmas Function was conducted at Tennis NT to thank the numerous businesses and organisations for their generous contribution to tennis. Media The regular circulation of media releases to Territory media outlets proved beneficial in gaining exposure for tennis, with 146 articles recorded in the pages of the NT News, Sunday Territorian, Katherine Times, Centralian Advocate, Palmerston Sun and the Arafura Times. Print media outlets continued to provide considerable tennis exposure primarily due to commendable performances from NTIS athletes. Events, programs and international tournaments produced greater interest from a variety of media sources, most notably the Pro Tour, when radio and television were engaged.
TV Commercial Southern Cross Television continues to air Tennis NT’s ‘participation’ commercial on its regional network. They value-added to their sponsorship by updating the commercial - at their cost - to meet tennis’ national branding guidelines. The partnership with Southern Cross continues to benefit the sport at a community level, albeit only to the Metropolitan Region because of the station’s ‘footprint’. We are working on this issue.

Notes to and forming part of the Financial Statements for the year ended 30 June 2010 Note 1 Summary of Accounting Policies The accounting policies adopted by the Association are stated in order to assist in a general understanding of the Financial Statements. These policies have been consistently applied except as otherwise indicated. The Association’s financial year end was changed from December to June and therefore the comparative accounts were prepared for the financial period being January 2008 to June 2009. Reporting entity The Association is not a reporting entity because in the Board’s opinion there are likely to exist users who are able to command the preparation of reports tailored so as to satisfy all of their information needs, and these accounts are therefore "special purpose accounts" that have been prepared solely to meet the requirements of the Constitution and the Associations Act. Accounting policies The Financial Report has been prepared under the historical cost conventions and does not take into account changing money values except to the extent that they are reflected in the revaluation of certain assets. In order for the Financial Report to present fairly the state of affairs of the Association and the results of the Association for the year, Australian Accounting Standards have been adopted to the extent disclosed in this note. Government Grants Government Grants are brought to account as income when the Association receives them. Unspent Grants are transferred to an appropriate liability account. Assets There was a change in accounting policy whereby asset purchases that have a life of greater than one year be capitalised and depreciated over the period of the estimated useful life of the asset. Previously all asset purchases were expensed. The estimated useful life for the assets purchased is three years for computer and IT equipment and five years for plant and equipment. Employee Entitlements The amounts expected to be paid to employees for their pro rata entitlement to annual leave and long service leave are accrued annually at current pay rates. Income tax The Association is of the opinion that it is not subject to income tax.

Note 2 Investments Tennis NT’s investment portfolio was transferred from Australian Central Credit Union to the Bendigo Bank during this reporting period due to better interest potential. An additional $50,000 was added to the investment bringing the total to $550,000. Note 3 Loan Alice Springs Tennis Association Incorporated received a loan of $15,000 to assist its facility upgrade. A Loan Agreement has been exchanged. The Loan will be repaid within 10 years. Note 4 $2,000 $1,000 $4,000
Income Received in Advance DTC Sports Nationals Incentive Sponsorship Deferred as part of the commitment to an Indigenous Program totalling $5,000 Intra-Territory Travel Subsidy not expended
Note 5 Officials Development Fund Tennis NT was successful in securing $2,845.60 of ‘unclaimed monies’ from the dissolved Northern Territory Tennis Umpires Association. This group ceased to function during the period 1996-97 and the remaining funds in their bank account was surrendered to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission that manages ‘unclaimed monies’ in 2004 where it has sat ever since. The money will be held in trust for Officials Development. Note 6 Feasibility Study - Territory Tennis Centre $50,000 was committed in 2005 to continue to advance the development of a Territory Tennis Centre. This commitment followed the submission in 2003 made to the NT Government seeking assistance for tennis to realise this vision. Note 7 Painting – Lease Agreement A requirement of the Lease Agreement for Tennis NT’s premises is that they be painted. Note 8 TCA-NT Scholarship Fund On its dissolution in 2006 TCA-NT instructed that its residual funds be given to Tennis NT on the provision that the funds be held in trust as a scholarship fund, specifically for coach education and development. Note 9 Current Year Surplus/Deficit The surplus was generated by un-budgeted Tennis Australia (TA) funds including an IT allocation of $20,000 plus funding for the Development Coordinator position that started 1 January. Due to recruitment challenges an appointment was not made until 24 May. The pro-rata amount was offered back to Tennis Australia who generously declined the offer. Furthermore additional sponsorship was gained and salary expenses were decreased with the resignation of the Administration Officer.
