2005 Annual Report
2
PRESIDENT I take pleasure in presenting to you the 26th Annual Report and financial statements of Tennis NT Inc. for the period January – December 2005. Last year I reported that we were witness to, and important participants in, significant change that will guide the future development and growth of our sport at the National, State and Territory levels and 2005 has certainly been a year of challenge and change for Tennis NT as the National direction has progressed. Throughout 2005 we have worked closely with affiliates to ensure that, despite the changes that have been brought about predominantly by decreased funding, we are maintaining our commitment to the programs that support the fundamentals of our sport and development in our regions. We have also progressed a review of our constitution again with input from our affiliates. This review was prompted by a change in NT Legislation and by changes to the governance structure that are being proposed by our national body, Tennis Australia. I recently reflected to the Tennis NT Board that I have appreciated the various perspectives affiliates and Board members have each brought to the table during this difficult year. As President I have come to enjoy, and to some degree take for granted, a high level of quality participation from everyone and as a consequence our collective efforts at continually striving for openness, transparency and trust is also driving success for our sport. Change is inevitable and a continuous process, and whatever 2006 may bring we need to maintain the focus on providing pathways in our sport for Territory athletes. To this end we will continue to work closely with our affiliates, strategic partners such as the Northern Territory Government, the Northern Territory Institute of Sport and Tennis Australia. A special thank you to our network of sponsors, coaches, volunteers, officials and administrators who contribute their time and effort to supporting the sport of tennis within the Northern Territory. It is important to acknowledge the continuing support provided to Tennis NT by Tennis Australia, Kids Tennis Foundation, our State and Territory colleagues and the Northern Territory Government.

ADMINISTRATION PLAYER DEVELOPMENT 2005 saw Tennis NT confronted with both unexpected, and also some expected challenges. These challenges were met by a resolute tennis community who maintained the best interests for the future of the game. In summary, the overriding objectives of Tennis NT continue to be administration, development and promotion of tennis from the position of a peak body, whilst maintaining consultation with stakeholders and service providers. To achieve these objectives a number of initiatives including a structured player development program, regional development support, a comprehensive marketing plan and a detailed events calendar have been developed. It is pleasing to note some success stories from 2005 which include: a continued increase in participation in tournaments and events; increased registrations; player development programs that yielded promising results, plus the financial test of markedly reduced funding was appropriately managed to ensure a viable future, at least in the short to medium term. Helen Coburn continued to add to the recorded history of tennis in the Northern Territory. This is a thankless task, but an important one and I acknowledge Helen’s work. I am also pleased to recognise the assistance of Luke Bosio, a past junior and more recently a coach in Alice Springs, who completed the early history of the ITF Junior Circuit Champions Honour Roll. It was exciting for the Northern Territory to pilot the first Tennis Australia Advanced Coach Course and I acknowledge the contribution of presenters Craig Morris and Travis Atkinson from the national Coach Education unit. Regrettably the locally scheduled Development Course did not eventuate due to a lack of participants and available presenters. As mentioned earlier, 2005 was an exacting year financially as the impact of the MA Size Index, introduced nationally on 1 July, began to unfold. Fortunately Tennis NT’s January to December fiscal year created a ‘buffer’ to the full potential of the funding decrease. Late in the year the Northern Territory was able to position itself to attract a one-off extraordinary grant of $50,000 This grant will be provided by Tennis Australia in 2006 in an effort to minimise the impact of the funding decrease. Early in the year all NTIS Sport Agreements were recalled and new submissions sought from all sports to fit a revised ‘framework’ developed by the NTIS under direction from the Northern Territory Government. This additional project significantly impacted on the administration. Tennis reviewed its presentation and was again successful in maintaining its position in the NTIS although with reduced services. This changed result tested the player development program with program delivery promises already having been made. The Northern Territory continues to struggle with its cultural avoidance of registration. With national sponsorship opportunities and government grants reliant on registration data this attitude must change so that the Northern Territory is positioned to attract potential funding from all available sources. It should be noted that Tennis Australia has a number of nationalisation initiatives it is investigating in conjunction with its Member Associations: national membership is one of them. We need to be on board. Coach Education has emerged as a crucial component of future success in the Northern Territory. Tennis NT will assume a leadership role in course coordination and professional development workshops to meet this need. In closing I take this opportunity to thank the Board for its guidance and commitment, and express my gratitude to the staff for their diligence and professionalism in advancing tennis in the Northern Territory. Di MacDonald General Manager 2005 Annual Report

COMMUNITY TENNIS PLAYER DEVELOPMENT Facility Development Since 2003 one of the major projects for Tennis NT has been, and still is, the ‘Territory Tennis Centre’ concept and ongoing lobbying for its realisation. Briefly, research into the project was undertaken in 2003 and a submission was made to the NT Government in November of that same year. To date tennis has not been given any solid commitment although anecdotally has been told it is being “considered”. Under advice from the Minister of Sport a separate submission was made to the Federal Government late in 2005 which proved to be unsuccessful. Work continues on this important project and its priority is uppermost. Its realisation will help the Northern Territory to maintain, and more importantly improve its position to host major events, expand player development opportunities and support the growth of tennis. $50,000 has been set aside to conduct a feasibility study once government has allocated an allotment of land.
Club Development Two Club Development Workshops were conducted during the year. One with Darwin Tennis Association on 5 May with a focus on registration and insurance implications, plus major event relationships with Tennis NT. The other Workshop was with the Gove Peninsula Tennis Club on 7 November. This meeting was convened to assist the club develop its 2006 Business Plan and clearly identify roles and responsibilities between club and the Regional Development Officer. Insurance The Honans NT Insurance Program continued to value-add to affiliation with Tennis NT. All members joined this program and benefited from the savings negotiated by Tennis NT. Cover was made available for Public Liability, Professional Indemnity and Directors and Officers Insurance with the optional availability of Personal Accident Insurance. The Honans program has been renegotiated for 2006 with a more comprehensive package. 2005 Annual Report
7
COMMUNITY TENNIS PLAYER DEVELOPMENT Gove Peninsula Tennis Club became the first affiliate to embrace the Personal Accident Insurance component with almost all their members signing up. Indigenous Tennis Program
The Indigenous Tennis Program was conducted in the Northern (Yirrkala), Central (Borroloola & Mataranka) and Southern (Hermannsburg, Mitijulu and Tennant Creek) Regions. Tennis NT acknowledges the tremendous support from the office of Sport & Recreation Indigenous Sport Unit and also the Australian Sports Commission through Tennis Australia. The funding provided ensures outlying communities are ‘touched’ by tennis and supports the visiting coaches who do an outstanding job. Wilson sponsored equipment as an added incentive for communities to continue their tennis on completion of the organised program. In 2006 the program will change dramatically with Tennis NT outsourcing the service delivery, coordination and promotion. Membership and Player Registration As the Northern Territory continued its struggle to embrace registration, a new initiative was introduced in 2005. Briefly the new program offered affiliates the option of paying a per person Registered Player fee or a Court Fee to try and convert participants to Registered Players and provide details to build the membership database that is sadly inaccurate. The implementation of these two options saw marginal success as is demonstrated in the numbers portrayed in the table on the next page. Additionally Tennis NT offered Direct Membership. This option was in response to club, centre and individual demands. This change will make way for a variety of options for participants into the future.

Regional Development Program This program continues to deliver success stories. The hardworking individuals that lead the regional development of tennis in remote Territory tennis centres are commended. Nicky Mayer (Northern), Steven Merker (Central) and Matthew Roberts (Southern) all continue to support their clubs with a variety of programs, competitions, tournaments and outreaching programs that enhance the tennis opportunity in the Northern Territory.
Highlights include the successful Indigenous Tennis Program in the Northern Region; the emergence of Tennis Borroloola as a going concern which was a direct result of the Central Regional Development Program and the success of Southern Region’s impact in Tennant Creek and Yulara. All these outreaching programs continue the diversification of the Northern Territory tennis community, adding to its interest. It would be remiss not to name the clubs that support this program. Ace Tennis 5,395 primary school students (2,854 boys + 2,541 girls) participated in Ace Tennis in 2005. The clubs and centres that supported this program are to be congratulated for its success. Unfortunately this program will not be coordinated by Tennis NT in 2006 but will be managed by the clubs and centres. School Sport NT 2005 MILO Bruce Cup From the School Sport NT Primary Exchange a group of 14 athletes were selected to represent the NT at the MILO Bruce Cup which was conducted in Darwin from 13-20 August. The 2005 team produced the Territory’s best ever result in the NT’s six-year history, by placing in 5th position and recording convincing wins over the ACT and Tasmania as well as being very competitive against a number of the other states. The team from New South Wales won the 2005 MILO Bruce Cup, successfully edging out defending champions Queensland, who finished in second position. PLAYER DEVELOPMENT 2005 witnessed the Tennis NT Player Development program achieve results of National and International significance. A national singles title, two national doubles titles, an athlete ranked 234 in the world for juniors, a best ever result in the Bruce Cup and three athletes selected into National Camps. It truly has been a pivotal year for our program and with that I am proud and honored to present my State Coach report for 2005. 2005 Squad Programs Swinger Enhancement Program (SEP) 10 athletes were selected from four affiliates. Affiliates involved were Alice Springs Tennis Association (3), DTC Sports (4), Darwin Tennis Association (2) and Katherine Tennis Club (1). This was Katherine’s first athlete selected into the SEP program. This program was again extremely successful with the technical picture changing positively with each athlete over the course of the year. MILO Project 12s - Clubs This program included the affiliates of Alice Springs Tennis Association, DTC Sports, Darwin Tennis Association, Gove Peninsula Tennis Club and the Katherine Tennis Club. During the Darwin July tournaments an invitation was extended to all MILO Squad athletes competing in the tournaments to tour the NTIS at Marrara and to attend a nutrition lecture conducted by the NTIS nutritionist. MILO Project 12s Squad Seven athletes were selected. They came from three different affiliates: Alice Springs Tennis Association (2), DTC Sports (4) and Darwin Tennis Association (1). The program this year was conducted in line with the SEP program. All athletes in the program attended the Up2U Camp in July. All seven athletes were invited to the 12/U National Claycourts with five athletes taking up the opportunity to travel with the NTIS, and some State Squad members. Up2U Squad 11 athletes attended the 2005 camp. It was conducted as a lead-in to the National Points event in Darwin during July. The athletes involved in this program were given a taste of all aspects of what an NTIS athlete undertakes throughout the year. The camp was extremely successful and many thanks must go to the coaches who assisted. They were: Sarah Andrews, Mark Pead and Khia DeSilva. State Squad This program had six athletes: two from Alice Springs and four from Darwin. Athletes competed at National Points tournaments throughout the year. These tournaments included Gosford, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast (January), Alice Springs (April), Brisbane & Cairns (June/July), Melbourne (September) and Adelaide (October).

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT NTIS Program Seven athletes were selected into the 2005 program and are identified elsewhere in this report. These athletes collectively have produced the best ever results for tennis in the Northern Territory. Between them they have traveled to tournaments in the following interstate places: Gosford, Bendigo, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Melbourne, Perth, Cairns, Adelaide and Canberra. Internationally, one or a number of athletes have traveled to: New Zealand, Fiji, New Caledonia, Denmark, the Netherlands and Malaysia. 2005 Highlights Ashlee Brown

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT Professional Development Workshops Seven coach education workshops were conducted in Darwin and three were held in Alice Springs. The SEP and Milo Project 12s camp also provided the opportunity to work with eight different coaches from across the Territory. Four coaches also attended the Indigenous Cross Cultural Awareness Course. FIT (Future in Tennis) Camp This was again a great success with eight participants selected. The participants were Jeremy Borgas and Jamie Toyne (Alice Springs), Anthony Trudgen (Gove), Aaron Dennien, Sam Giess, Alex Humphrey, Arlo Meehan-Tilley and Jason Vieira (Darwin). The camp provided sessions on coaching, court supervising, restringing, TMS, careers in sport, club management. This year saw former NTIS athlete and current University of Michigan State athlete Sarah Andrews present to the participants on college in America. This program continues to see former participants progress to coaching and working at clubs within the Territory. A number of participants have gone on to successfully achieve their Development Coach accreditation since their attendance at the FIT Camp. Regional Development It is quite evident the regional programs of Alice Springs, Gove and Katherine are developing and improving with each year, which is a testament to the commitment and professionalism of the coaches in these areas. I traveled to Alice Springs on four occasions where I worked with State Squad members, Milo Squad athletes, SEP athletes and other individuals. A camp was also held for Alice Springs athletes in Darwin between the Darwin and NT Open. A visit was also made to Katherine to assist athletes traveling away in January of 2006. A SEP session was also conducted. Tennis Australia An integral component of the Tennis NT Player Development Program is the support and assistance provided by Tennis Australia. The success of Ashlee Brown this year has been assisted by the additional tours she has been able to attend with Tennis Australia.

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT WANT (Western Australia/Northern Territory) Program A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between Tennis NT and Tennis West. This arrangement has been beneficial for all with regards to Player Development. The sharing of human resources, training and traveling activities has greatly helped our athletes achieve the results they have. Special thanks must go to Tennis West State Coach, Milo Bradley for his commitment and coach assistance to NT athletes in 2005.
NTIS athlete Adil Hakeem
Acknowledgements A number of people need to be thanked for their commitment and dedication to our athletes in 2005. The following people volunteered their time to travel with NT athletes this year: Andrea Calley, Brendan Higgins, Sarah Andrews, Pat Coburn and Warren Foote. A special thank you must go to Liz Grylls who volunteered nearly two months of the year to travel with Northern Territory athletes. NTIS Strength and Conditioning coach Vanessa Paun went above and beyond the call of duty consistently throughout the year. Kim Cardile helped our distance education athletes with their schooling. Jaki HillConnolly volunteered her time to ensure our Yoga program in Darwin ran smoothly and her efforts with our State Squad Gym program were greatly appreciated. Finally a sincere thank you must go to my fellow colleagues at Tennis NT for their incredible commitment and professionalism towards Player Development. Our fantastic year on the court is a testament to the whole staff. Where to Now More athletes with WTA/ATP rankings; to increase the number of athletes with ITF rankings and to increase the number of nationally competitive athletes at the 12/Under and 14/Under level are all objectives for 2006 which are realistic. To achieve this in the future, continued change is inevitable and the role of Player Development in the NT must move with this. I will finish with a quote that I believe sums up our future: “You will never stub your toe standing still. The faster you go the more chance there is of stubbing your toe, but the more chance you have of getting somewhere.

MARKETING & EVENTS Annual Workshop The MILO Tennis Over Australia Annual Workshop hosts stakeholders from the Territory tennis community providing them with the opportunity to participate in an interactive information sharing experience. The Workshop is now recognised as a major event on the Events Calendar and has been positioned to create an environment of support and inspiration leading into the busy ‘Dry Season’ tennis period. The theme for the 2005 Workshop was “Our Network to Success”. Topics included an overview of insurance trends, a special presentation from leading Australian risk management company, RiskPro Pty Ltd. The combination of these two presentations provided the platform to create a safe environment for tennis activities across the Northern Territory. Tennis NT’s major Community Tennis sponsor Wilson, was represented by Michael Sayer who delivered a presentation on Wilson’s global position and their Territory partnership with the Indigenous Tennis Program and Tennis in Schools. Pat Coburn delivered a succinct historical analysis leading to the present day environment of tennis participation and player development activities. His challenge to the forum was to take collective responsibility and ownership of tennis’ future and the potential for success. The forum enthusiastically workshopped this topic. The end result produced a committed tennis network operating across the Territory.

MARKETING & EVENTS July Junior Circuit
Tennis NT acknowledges the generous support of the major sponsors of the ITF Junior Circuit tournaments. The July Junior Circuit comprises the Darwin ITF Junior Championships, Northern Territory ITF Junior Championships, Darwin Age Titles and Schweppes NT Age Titles. Darwin City Council continued as the Naming Rights Sponsorship of the ITF Circuit, comprising the Darwin ITF Junior Championships and the Northern Territory ITF Junior Championships. Their three-year commitment is commendable. For the first time in the history of the Darwin ITF tournaments’ the girls’ draw attracted more entries than the boys’ draw. This is quite remarkable considering entry numbers for most tournaments are dominated by male entrants. Tennis NT acknowledges the support of corporate sponsors, players, coaches, volunteers and Tennis Australia. Tennis Australia continues to support the tournaments both financially and in human resources. Rohan Lawton, Tennis Events Coordinator, provided substantial pre-tournament administration support. Tennis Australia also absorbed a great deal of administrative and financial responsibility for hosting the tournaments. Marcia O’Shea was fantastic as the tournament referee for both the Darwin ITF Junior Championships and Northern Territory ITF Junior Championships. Peggie Stubbersfield was once again unbelievable as the Sports Trainer. Peggie has been involved with the July Junior Circuit for the past ten years and her efforts are very much appreciated by the tournament staff and players. New Zealand’s Shona Lee in action

MARKETING & EVENTS Territory Tennis Talk Tennis NT’s bi-monthly publication, Territory Tennis Talk, continued to keep the Territory tennis community informed with all the latest local tennis news, programs, events and tournament information. Australian Tennis Magazine The bi-monthly Grassroots section in Australian Tennis Magazine provided Northern Territory tennis with the opportunity to promote its programs, activities and achievements to a national audience, as well as providing exposure to the Asia-Pacific region. The Senior Points Circuit was promoted through the March edition with a catchy advertisement in the ‘Grassroots’ section. The promotion proved successful with Tennis NT receiving numerous phone calls from interstate competitors enquiring about the senior events. Media The regular circulation of media releases to local and state media outlets proved beneficial in gaining exposure for tennis. Exposure through local print media outlets increased considerably due mainly to consistent high performances by athletes involved in the Player Development Program. Events, programs and especially tournaments that had a national or international component attracted a greater response than that of local events and competitions. Power and Water NT League Since its inception in 2002, the NT League has provided the Territory’s elite senior and junior players with the opportunity to regularly compete at a high level. Power and Water joined forces with tennis as the naming-rights sponsor of the NT League. Their commitment to supporting the local community showcased the Territory’s premier player’s battle for supremacy over the eight-week competition. Tennis NT acknowledges the support from team captains and team members who ensured the NT League operated efficiently for the duration of the season. Tennis NT would also like to acknowledge the support of the two venues namely DTC Sports and Gardens Tennis Complex. The teams are fortunate to play in facilities of this calibre. Due to a reduction in funding and resources Tennis NT have suspended the running of the NT League for 2006.

MARKETING & EVENTS Honeycombes Hyundai NT Open Championships
The 2005 Honeycombes Hyundai NT Open Championships provided 157 tennis enthusiasts with a memorable Queen’s Birthday weekend. Tennis NT’s events team worked tirelessly to host an exceptional NT Open Championships. The event ran extremely smoothly thanks to the fantastic efforts of our volunteer staff that assisted in the tournament office and with court supervising duties. The Group 1 Senior Points Circuit event proved to be an outstanding success attracting visitors from most parts of Australia and a strong Northern Territory contingent. In total, 157 competitors competed in 29 events held at the Gardens Tennis Complex and DTC Sports Coconut Grove. The Open events attracted some of the highest quality fields assembled in the Territory providing crowds with a plethora of close matches and some inspirational tennis. Finals Day was no exception with both the Men’s and Women’s singles finals pushing the sizable crowd to the edge of their seats. The VIP area proved a popular position for our distinguished guests to witness the intense on-court action. The Men’s Singles Championship offered a host of potential winners with defending champion Ben Howen, of Alice Springs, awarded the top seeding following a successful campaign at the Darwin Open. Howen faced some strong opposition from two-time NT Open Champion Matt McMahon and fellow South Australian Scott Robertson, winner of the DTC Sports Open two weeks prior. McMahon eventually met Robertson in the semi-finals in a battle between youth and experience. In a tight contest it was the fitness and exuberance of Robertson that overcame McMahon’s tennis smarts to set up a finals showdown with Howen who cruised through to the final without dropping a set. In a final that was only separated by a few points it was Robertson who made the most of his opportunities to claim his first Parap Cup, 7-6(9) 7-6(3). In the Women’s Singles Championship West Australian Donna Blackwell was favoured to collect her fifth NT Open singles title and after a tight three-set match against former NTIS athlete Sarah Andrews she progressed to meet current NTIS teenage tennis sensation Ashlee Brown. Brown, seeded 2 and the only Territory resident in the draw, completely dominated the first set before losing the second set to a determined Blackwell. Brown, 16, regained her composure to close out the match in style, winning the Barden Trophy 6-1 3-6 6-0.

MARKETING & EVENTS Officials Tennis NT conducted Court Supervisor courses in Alice Springs, Katherine, Darwin and Gove throughout 2005. These courses were extremely valuable in building the base of Officials across the Territory and we hope that more people will feel inclined to become involved as an Official as we continually strive to improve the quality of our events. Kym Nixon continued in the role of Chair of the Officials Committee, providing outstanding support coordinating a dedicated group of volunteer Officials for a range of Northern Territory events.
Tennis NT tournament staff Sean Barrett and Di MacDonald with ITF Referees Lisa and Marcia O’Shea ,
Holdfast Presentation Dinner The 2005 Holdfast Presentation Dinner provided the highlight of the Northern Territory tennis social calendar. The Dinner, held at Darwin’s SKYCITY Casino, proved to be an outstanding success with a record attendance of 140, with strong representation from each of the Darwin affiliates, plus regional representatives from Alice Springs, Borroloola, Gove, and Katherine all helping to provide the Dinner with a strong Territorian atmosphere. The Dinner provides the tennis community the chance to band together and recognise the achievements of those who have significantly contributed to the development of tennis across the Northern Territory. Darwin junior Ashlee Brown was the recipient of the Austin Asche Trophy (Junior Tennis Award). The perpetual trophy was donated by Tennis NT’s patron, Austin Asche AC, in 1998 and recognises a player’s sportsmanship, interstate performances and the contribution they have made to tennis in the Northern Territory. Congratulations go to the Alice Springs Tennis Association (ASTA) who picked up the prestigious Club of the Year award. The award recognises ASTA’s strong achievements in fostering player registration, the links formed with local community groups, including many of the local indigenous communities, and the wide variety of programs and competitions designed to satisfy the needs of a growing membership base. A major focus of the Dinner is to recognise the valued efforts that volunteers provide to tennis throughout the year. Volunteers form the lifeblood of many Australian sporting clubs and organisations, therefore it is imperative that tennis recognises these efforts. Tennis NT would like to congratulate the following affiliate Volunteer of the Year award winners:

Lyle Lee was awarded Tennis NT Life Membership. Lyle has been involved with tennis in the Northern Territory since the 1960’s. Over this time Lyle has filled a magnitude of roles ranging from a player, coach, volunteer, and administrator. Lyle was instrumental in the founding of Tennis Veterans NT in 1987, now known as Tennis Seniors NT, and held the Secretary position for this organisation until late in 2004. Tennis NT would like to extend its gratitude to Lyle for his efforts over the past 40 years in growing the game of tennis throughout the Northern Territory. Thank you to all who attended the evening, the support for tennis in the Northern Territory is greatly appreciated. Finally, special mention must be made of the Tennis NT Regional Development Officer who again established himself as the king of the dance floor. We hope you continue to entertain us with your vast variety of dancing talents at future tennis events.
Ryan Popovsky receives his award at the 2005 Dinner
Senior Points Circuit The 2005 Senior Points Circuit provided increased playing opportunities across the Northern Territory’s metropolitan and regional areas with a record number of tournaments included in the circuit. The addition of the DTC Sports Open and the Gove Open Carnival in 2005 added new dimensions to the Senior Points Circuit creating a ‘mini metropolitan circuit’ that attracted interstate visitors to Darwin for a three-week period and expanding into new regions of the Territory. The Senior Points Circuit quickly became a one-horse event in both the Men’s and Women’s with Alice Springs’ Ben Howen and Darwin’s Ashlee Brown establishing early leads following their success at the Mac’s Hire Katherine Open. Although missing the DTC Sports Open, Howen established a strong lead after winning the Kerry’s Mazda Darwin Open and finishing runner-up at the Honeycombes Hyundai NT Open Championships. Brown, 16, continued her run of success taking the Women’s singles championship at the DTC Sports Open, Kerry’s Mazda Darwin Open and Honeycombes Hyundai NT Open Championships ensuring her first Senior Points Circuit title.

MARKETING & EVENTS MILO Tennis Over Australia The MILO Tennis Over Australia program entered into its final year of operation. The program is a partnership between MILO, Tennis Australia, Tennis NT and the Australian Sports Commission. Clubs involved in the program must be a recognised member of the ASC Club Development Network. Members of the Club Development Network gain access to a range of educational resources designed to improve club administration and promote continuous improvement. The program enables Tennis NT to provide funding to clubs/affiliates who in turn are required to carry out a series of fun days, junior/senior tournaments and attend the Tennis NT Annual Workshop. Club Development Workshop This component is incorporated as part of the Tennis NT Annual Workshop. Each club involved in the MILO Tennis Over Australia program must be represented at the workshop. Fun Days Each of the clubs involved with the program in 2005 conducted a ‘Tennis Fun Day’ at their club/facility. The fun days provided clubs/affiliates with a fantastic opportunity to promote the game of tennis within their region. Clubs/affiliates have the flexibility to determine whether they market tennis to the mass audience or alternatively they may choose a segment from the market and focus their efforts towards this segment.
Tennis Borroloola provided a range of activities for participants at their 2005 MILO Fun Day

INDEPENDENT AUDIT REPORT
TO THE MEMBERS OF TENNIS NT INC Scope I have audited the attached special purpose financial report of the Tennis NT for the year ended 31 December 2005. The Association’s Board of Management is responsible for the preparation and presentation of the financial report, and the information contained therein, and has determined that the accounting policies used are consistent with the financial reporting requirements of the entity’s constitution and are appropriate to meet the needs of the members. I have conducted an independent audit of the financial report in order to express an opinion to the members of the Tennis NT on its preparation and presentation. No opinion is expressed as to whether the accounting policies used are appropriate to the needs of the members. The financial report has been prepared for distribution to the members for the purpose of fulfilling the Board of Management’s financial reporting requirements under the Association’s constitution and the Associations Act. I disclaim any assumption of responsibility for any reliance on this report or on the financial report to which it relates, to any person other than the members, or for any purpose other than that for which it was prepared. My audit has been conducted in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. My procedures included examination, on a test basis, of evidence supporting the amounts and other disclosures in the financial report, and the evaluation of accounting estimates. These procedures have been undertaken to form an opinion as to whether, in all material respects, the financial report is presented fairly in accordance with the basis of accounting described in Note 1 to the financial report and the requirements of the Associations Act. These do not require the application of all Accounting Standards. The audit opinion expressed in this report has been formed on the above basis.
Qualification The Association only records amounts received for fundraising, donations and function receipts when these amounts are banked, as it is not practical to establish control over such income prior to its initial entry. My audit relating to such income was therefore limited to ensuring that the amounts banked are properly recorded in the accounts. Qualified Audit Opinion In my opinion, subject to the matters referred to in the above qualification paragraph, the financial report presents fairly in accordance with the accounting policies described in Note 1 to the financial report and the Associations Act, the financial position of the Tennis NT Inc. at 31 December 2005 and the results of its operations for the year then ended. FINANCIAL NOTES NOTE 7. TENNIS AUSTRALIA GRANTS 2005 saw significant changes to funding delivery by Tennis Australia (TA). TA introduced the MA (Member Association) Size Index which determines the level of funding State and Territory associations receive. The Index is calculated using a number of factors including population, number of registered players and number of affiliated clubs. Fortunately the NT has a different financial year which created a ‘buffer’ in 2005 and the impact will not be felt in its severity until 2006. The Administration Support is now paid monthly, as opposed to bi-annually, which explains the significant increase compared with 2004. TA’s new CEO, Steve Wood was instructed to review the three smaller Member Associations in the latter part of the year and make a recommendation, or not, for additional funding in 2006. The NT benefited from this review with a further $50,000 This was announced after TA’s AGM on 24 October 2005. For the foreseeable future Tennis Australia will provide funding in the following areas: Administration Support; Community Tennis; Indigenous Tennis; the two Darwin ITF tournaments and Player Development. NOTE 8. NT GOVERNMENT GRANTS Grants from the NT Government are provided in a general framework and are to be used by the recipient organisation so that it achieves the objectives set out in its grant application. ** Debt for outstanding Player Registration Fee written off. NOTE 10. COACH EDUCATION Tennis NT was able to retain the income from the Tennis Australia conducted Advanced Course due to it being a pilot course. Tennis NT was still responsible for some of the expenses attributable to the course. NOTE 11. TRAVEL CONTRIBUTIONS The significant increase in miscellaneous travel contributions is directly related to the Memorandum of Understanding Tennis NT has with Tennis West which was established to enhance the Player Development Program. Both associations share administrative responsibility of elite athlete travel management which inflates incomes. Additionally there were two Elite Indigenous Travel and Accommodation Assistance Program (EITAPP) subsidies paid by the Australian Sports Commission through its Indigenous Sport Program. NOTE 12. PREMISES This figure is inflated due to the provision for painting identified in the Balance Sheet. NOTE 13. FACILITY DEVELOPMENT This figure is inflated due to the provision for the feasibility study identified in the Balance Sheet.
