2004 Annual Report
2
PRESIDENT I take pleasure in presenting to you the 25th Annual Report and financial statements of the Northern Territory Tennis Council Inc. trading as Tennis NT, for the period January – December 2004. As the 2001 – 2004 Tennis NT Strategic Plan expires it is an opportunity to present five major successes that summarise the collective achievements of the Northern Territory tennis community over this exciting and challenging period. From a base of one qualified Referee residing in the Northern Territory in 2000, we have facilitated training and development opportunities that has realised in 2004: two ITF White Badge Referees; eight Level 1 Referees and 31 Court Supervisors. One of our referees who played a primary role in this remarkable achievement is Ross Connolly (White badge) who has presented numerous Court Supervisor courses in a voluntary capacity. Wayne Spencer, Tennis Australia Chief of Officials has also supported this program from its inception. In conjunction with TCA - NT we have provided an Advanced Coach course for four participants; facilitated access for three participants to a distance education Advanced Coach course with TCA Queensland plus provided Development Courses that have attracted 30 participants. TCA - NT gained national recognition of the standard of coaching in the NT with Pat Coburn being awarded the Tennis Coaches Australia National Advanced Coaches Award of Excellence. Pat was also the recipient of the NT Sports Awards Coach of the Year for 2004. The tennis community gained support from the Northern Territory Government for a new tennis facility in Darwin and support from the Alice Springs Town Council for redevelopment of the facility in Alice Springs. Our juniors are consistently appearing in the semis and finals of interstate national points events. Emergence of talent through our indigenous programs and the ability of Tennis NT to support an individual’s development pathway. The efforts of Tennis NT in introducing tennis into remote indigenous communities of the Northern Territory in collaboration with Kids Tennis Foundation, the Katherine Tennis Club and the Red Centre Tennis Academy bore fruit with the establishment of Borroloola formally affiliating with Tennis NT. Tennis NT also acknowledges the support of the Northern Territory Departments of Employment, Education and Training and Sport and Recreation for their commitment to and support for, our programs. I would like to personally acknowledge the efforts of the Northern Territory tennis community who demonstrate a wealth of goodwill, enthusiasm and commitment to our sport giving freely of their time and support. It is equally important to thank our staff for their efforts in creating an environment that encourages ongoing innovation. The extra effort and hours worked do not go unnoticed. Late in 2004 we are witness to and important participants in, significant change that will guide the future development and growth of our sport at the National, State and Territory levels. It is imperative that Tennis NT maintains its focus of striving to demonstrate outcomes relevant for both the Northern Territory and national direction. To this end my commitment as President will be to secure the immediate future of Tennis NT, that is to maintain its current level of resource and at the same time to explore and build alternative income sources to ensure long-term viability and sustainability. A special thank you to our network of sponsors, coaches, volunteers, officials and administrators who contribute their time and effort to supporting the sport of tennis within the Northern Territory. I take this opportunity to acknowledge the support provided by the Northern Territory Government and Tennis Australia and look forward to strengthening both partnerships well into the future. ADMINISTRATION After some careful consideration a restructure took place early in 2004 encompassing all facets of the business. The restructure program included changes to staff objectives, reporting and the financial chart of accounts. The aim was to streamline Tennis NT’s business and create consistency across all responsibilities. I am pleased to report that this has been achieved and will form the basis for future planning and direction, not to mention accountability. The realignment of Position Statements has resulted in a more concerted focus on marketing with the aim of increasing the profile of tennis in the Northern Territory. Furthermore a direct link between the responsibilities of participation and player development was established. The success or other of the restructure will be tested in 2005. A highlight of the year was the cohesive approach to the Territory’s insurance problems. A comprehensive insurance package was negotiated with Honan Insurance Brokers with the majority of affiliates coming on board. Significantly, an impressive reduction in premiums was achieved. It was heartening to observe the trust afforded to Tennis NT in the early stages of negotiations. Tennis NT continues to carefully monitor its financial position, albeit with considered regard for the continuity of programs. 2004 developed into a challenging time for the administration in light of the funding review conducted by Tennis Australia, which resulted in immediate changes. Future ramifications are being closely monitored. The results of this review will be known in May 2005 when Tennis NT will again assess its position. Information technology continues to be a significant cost factor, however the benefits and communication efficiencies justify the expenditure. Technology will no doubt be a growing part of our business and will be developed along with the other more basic responsibilities of a modern tennis administration. The proposed ‘Territory Tennis Centre’ continues its position on the agenda with regular meetings with government and stakeholders. It was certainly a timely endorsement at last year’s Annual Workshop when the members unanimously embraced the project. Unfortunately progress is slow, however diligence and correct analysis of the feasibility of the proposed project is critical. Tennis NT will continue to engage Government on this vital project for the future. The now well-established annual Staff/RDO Workshop continued to inspire with the interactive communication and innovative ideas that were generated. The success of this networking opportunity was demonstrated by the suggestion to include additional stakeholders in the 2005 Workshop. Tennis NT’s sub-committee structure continues to grow as a direct response to development and accountability requirements. Terms of Reference (TOR) have been established for the majority of these committees, however it will be a priority in 2005 to complete and review TORs. The members of these committees are warmly acknowledged for their commitment to tennis and its future. The division of the Northern Territory into four regions continues to demonstrate a positive outcome. Not only does this division enhance the Regional Development Officer program but also assists analysis for identification of potential growth and development opportunities. The Board governs in a business-like manner, which provides a solid foundation for clear direction, making the staff’s position easier. Without exception the Directors make themselves readily available. The staff continues to strive in the best interests of the team and, importantly the game, to produce remarkable results for a small group. Their commitment is exemplary. The challenges in 2005 will no doubt emerge. I am confident that they will be met with professionalism and enthusiasm and tennis in the Northern Territory will continue to move forward.

PARTICIPATION DEVELOPMENT Club Grants Once again Tennis Australia provided the opportunity for clubs to access additional funds for participation initiatives. The following two clubs successfully applied for grants: Gove Peninsula Tennis Club: Conducted two new programs aimed at increasing participation for women and couples. Thursday morning women’s tennis is now a club fixture. Katherine Tennis Club: Conducted the “Get Hitting” program. The project targeted upper primary and secondary students for participation competitions to be played at the club.

PARTICIPATION DEVELOPMENT Disabilities Tennis NT did not conduct a disabilities program. Due to limited demand the Board agreed that given the limited resources, particularly staff at the beginning of the year, it would not be practical.

The program moved from the Yirrkala Community (Northern Region) in 2003, to three new communities in Central and Southern Regions in 2004. Sourcing coaches remains a difficult task given their heavy workloads, so their support for the program is acknowledged with much appreciation. Hopefully they enjoy their involvement as much as the communities do. It was the first time that Tennis NT had worked with the NT Government’s Office of Sport & Recreation with the Indigenous Sport Program. This partnership will assist future exposure of tennis to outlying communities. Equipment The ITP Program provides communities with equipment for the first year only. A Wilson Kit of two nets, 25 racquets and 25 balls is a good-will gesture to facilitate continuation of tennis on communities, especially where they have no courts. Yirara and Yipirinya received kits this year. Additionally, both Umbakumba and Angurugu Communities (Northern Region) were presented kits on Groote Eylandt in readiness for their 2005 program commencement. Travel Communities located within reasonable access of Tennis NT affiliated venues remain a priority. Alice Springs Tennis Association succeeded in ensuring that the communities visited their courts on a regular basis. Each community is encouraged to be at the club/centre/association courts for at least one week in the program. 2004 Annual Report

PARTICIPATION DEVELOPMENT Player Registration Total player registration numbers rose by 7% to 998 players compared with 934 at the end of 2003. Gove Peninsula Tennis Club showed a significant increase – interestingly at the same time the RDO program was established in that region - while KTC and DTC Sports Sanderson had much lower numbers than last year. However, Tennis NT has maintained its steady increase in registrations. Having only established a registration system in 1996 the entrenched non-registration culture has presented many challenges for the administration. In an effort to correct the anomaly of databases versus actual numbers of tennis players it is proposed that in 2005 a radical change to registration will be implemented and tested. The Annual Staff/RDO Workshop developed a model that was subsequently recommended to the Board. The Board has endorsed the proposal, which will be tabled at the 2005 Annual General Meeting. Regional Development Officers The Regional Development Officer Program entered its third year with, yet again, a great deal of success. Midway through the scheduled five-year program Tennis NT’s investment reached the peak of its projected financial outlay. Without a doubt the success attributed to Tennis Australia’s annual $34,000 grant has been extraordinary. Combined with Tennis NT’s cash outlay the program has seen the incremental establishment of four regional development programs covering all four of Tennis NT’s defined regions. The map on Page 7 of this report identifies the four Regions.
Technical Field Officer Greg Mariager (pictured) came on board in an honorary role as Technical Field Officer for Tennis NT. The program is another important initiative of Tennis Australia. The position is timely in that Facility Development is a priority objective for the Northern Territory. Greg is well credentialed and over a short period has assessed four regional facilities and made a number of recommendations for improvements.

PARTICIPATION DEVELOPMENT Tennis in Schools Ace Tennis Some 4,155 primary school students participated in Ace Tennis in 2004. Coaches involved in the program once again did a wonderful job. The coaches were: Benita Bitner, Luke Bosio, Pat Coburn, Tim Colleran, George Dubrava, Dominic Hall, Leigh Marshall, Nicky Mayer, Steven Merker, Ben Milner, Max Morris, Mark Pead, Andrew Swinson and Robyn Woods. Gove participants in the Tennis In Schools program
Ben Milner, one of the most experienced Ace Tennis coaches, presented at the Coaches Professional Development Workshop which was invaluable in providing coaches with some practical examples of Ace Tennis activities.
School Sport NT MILO Bruce Cup From the School Sport NT Primary Exchange in Darwin a group of 14 athletes were selected to represent the NT at the MILO Bruce Cup in Bendigo, Victoria from 9-17 October. The team included participants from Alice Springs, Darwin and Katherine. This was a first for a Katherine representative in the primary schools section. The 2004 team produced “a first” in the NT’s six-year history with a win over the ACT. This was a great result, which enabled the NT to finish in 6th place. Previous teams had recorded a win over Tasmania only. With the event to be held in Darwin in 2005 it will be an historic opportunity for players and coaches to see how the NT fair on Territory courts. 2004 BOYS

PARTICIPATION DEVELOPMENT School Sport NT Pizzey Cup Unfortunately, due to a lack of competitors, the Northern Territory had to withdraw from the Pizzey Cup, which is the National Secondary teams competition. Tennis NT assisted School Sport NT to convene the NT Secondary Championships that were held in Darwin at the Gardens Tennis Complex. This is the ‘trials’ competition used for selection into Pizzey Cup. Holistic Body Awareness Program (HoBA) This program has been developed to establish a direct link between Tennis in Schools (participation) and Player Development. All clubs were invited to participate. In the first year of the revamped program, Alice Springs Tennis Association identified seven athletes during their Wilson Tennis in Schools coaching who were invited to two sessions of skills and activities conducted by State Coach, Rohan Fisher and Participation Development Manager, Ryan Popovsky. The feedback from the athletes, parents and coaches was very positive and the athletes have been offered a tennis scholarship for one term of free coaching in 2005. The program will continue in 2005 and it is anticipated will branch out to other areas. Thank you to the Alice Springs coaches and in particular Matthew Roberts for supporting this pilot program.
Travel Monies allocated for travel were spread across visits to Katherine for a TMS Course, Groote Eylandt for ITP and club development with RDO Nicky Mayer, and to Alice Springs for HoBA.
Women in Tennis MILO EGGS Program For the first time, the EGGS program was conducted in Darwin. The Gardens Tennis Complex, DTC Sports - Coconut Grove and DTC Sports - Sanderson collectively provided coaching to 28 girls aged between 7 and 10 years. Evonne Goolagong Cawley attended the Fun Day, which was staggered across two venues on Sunday 4 September. The program will again move to the Southern Region to be conducted at the Alice Springs Tennis Association in 2005.

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT State Coach Report At the end of my 2003 report I finished with a quote our program athletes used throughout 2004: “Little by little one walks far” I am now proud to say the distance we have walked is greater than that of any year before. We have developed a number of new programs, restructured a number of existing programs and have taken Player Development in the Northern Territory to a new level. The Program is summarised as follows: Future in Tennis (FIT) Program The FIT program was conducted for the second year with six players selected for the four-day course in July. The participants represented four different affiliates. The FIT program included the following modules:
Orientation to Coaching Course Racquet Restringing US College Opportunities Careers in Sport Club Management Tournament Management inc. TMS Court Supervisor’s Course Using Technology in Tennis Coaching
The completion of the second year saw over half of all participants now with paid employment at their local tennis club either coaching, restringing or in the office/pro shop. Clearly the outcomes of this program positions tennis well into the future.
2004 FIT Camp Participants: Nhu Nguyen, Daniel Zagorskis, Isaac Wardle, Luise Borci, Khia De Silva, Nicholas Munro
Up2U Program Up2U was held for the second year with eight athletes (see Page 16) involved. The participants represented five different affiliates. The Up2U Program included the following sessions: Physical Testing Match-play Analysis Psychology
Yoga On Court Technical/Tactical Reports
Special thanks go to Luke Bosio, Ben Milner and Isaac Wardle who assisted with the conduct of the camp. SEP Program This program is in its third year and is emerging as the best way to do business with stakeholders. Nine athletes were selected for inclusion in the program. They benefited from additional private coaching lessons. A special acknowledgment must be made of the Red Centre Tennis Academy. The Academy’s involvement with the Tennis Australia funded RDO program helped identify a young boy in Tennant Creek who was subsequently selected in the program. The commitment by the athlete and his coach, Benita Bittner who is based in Alice Springs with the Academy, is a credit to them both. The travel necessary was extraordinary. 2004 Annual Report

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT NTIS Program Five athletes were selected for 2004, with the year seeing the program produce its best results to date. The athletes competed at various locations throughout the year including: Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Hobart, Alice Springs, Geelong, Mildura, Cairns, Canberra, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. Athletes in the NTIS Program won National Points events in Alice Springs, Darwin and Hobart, with runner up results in Cairns, Canberra, Darwin and Hobart. Travelling interstate would not be possible without the time and effort volunteered by individuals throughout the year. The people who contributed in this way during 2004 were Wendy Baxter, Kim Cardile, Warren Foote, Kate Lee, Ryan Popovsky, Matthew Roberts and Andrew Swinson. Special mention must be made of Liz Grylls who volunteered her time on a number of occasions throughout the year. Lizzy: thank you very much for the great service and loyalty to the Tennis NT Player Development Program. The athletes in this program were also well looked after by the Service Providers at the NTIS. State Squad Program This program was divided into four groups: State Squad Gold (2 athletes), State Squad Silver (1 athlete), State Squad FIT (3 athletes) and State Squad Regional (2 athletes). The athletes in these programs travelled interstate in conjunction with the NTIS athletes on many tours. The new program component for 2004 was the State Squad FIT. The FIT Squad participated in the Development Coaching Course as part of their program with two successfully completing it. Special mention must be made of Jaki-Hill Connolly who does a wonderful job with the State Squad gym program and the Yoga program. Without her care, passion and dedication to this program it would simply not exist. Thank you Jaki. Regional NT During 2004 I visited Alice Springs on six separate occasions, Gove on one occasion and Katherine three times. During these visits, I worked with athletes in different Tennis NT programs, worked with coaches and their programs and attended some tournaments. The technical improvements occurring at a regional level is a testament to the commitment by all coaches in these regions who continue to move with the times. MILO Squads Six MILO Squads were conducted throughout the NT. At the 2004 Red Centre Classic in April, a MILO Doubles Day was conducted for MILO Squad athletes. It proved to be a great day. Thanks to the MILO Squad coaches who volunteered their time for this day. The MILO Extension Squad Program continued with a greater emphasis on matchplay. The program saw a total of nine athletes selected from club MILO Squads during the year. At any one time there were eight athletes. (The ninth was selected when an athlete moved interstate). The breakdown was seven athletes from Darwin and two from Alice Springs. 2004 Annual Report

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT Completing the Picture 2004 saw the third year of Tennis NT’s inclusion in the Tennis Australia funded Completing the Picture Program. Alan Stone, a former top player and Wayne Pollock from CD Sports delivered an extremely professional program. The program is aimed at ‘rounding off’ an athlete’s experience with the primary focus on personal development activities for off-court skills.
Completing the Picture participants testing their skills
Again the feedback was tremendous from athletes and parents. Since its inception this program has been well supported in the Northern Territory.
Conclusion Special thanks must go to my work colleagues at Tennis NT who support me greatly and keep the ‘ship running’ when I am on the road. Also to my wife Carol for being so understanding of my time away from home. To the Tennis NT Board and Player Participation & Development Committee I acknowledge their continued belief in the direction of where we are heading. I thank you. Our current group of elite junior players are raising the standard of expectation and with that, change is needed. This will occur in 2005 with a number of our elite athletes undertaking distance education, plus a closer working relationship with the Western Australian program is being developed. It truly promises to be a very exciting year ahead of us with great change occurring. For 2005, I challenge us all to: “Think Positive. Way too many people already focus on the negative.” We could look at our isolation and small population as a negative and decide that success is too difficult. This is not the case, we all just need to believe and be positive.

MARKETING & EVENTS Annual Workshop A primary focus for Tennis NT is the conduct of the MILO Tennis Over Australia Annual Workshop. The Workshop has emerged as a major event providing the opportunity to host an interactive, information sharing experience. Tennis Australia generously supports this event and their involvement is acknowledged. Without this financial assistance it would be very difficult to attract our remote regions. The timing of the Workshop is positioned to create an environment of support and inspiration leading into the busy ‘Dry Season’ tennis period. The 2004 Workshop theme was “Back to the Future” which was intended to highlight the necessity for planning for the future. With 2004 being the end of the current Strategic Plan period this subject became topical, as did discussions on the proposed ‘Territory Tennis Centre’, of which a Concept Brief was tabled and unanimously endorsed. Michael Duffy from Clubsinc was invited to demonstrate the benefits of using technology for club administration and management. Additionally Brad Tresidder from Honan Risk & Insurance Brokers presented the new, optional Northern Territory Insurance Program which covered the major insurance risk classes: Public & Products Liability, Professional Indemnity and Directors and Officers Liability. Insurance had long been a difficult business item for a number of affiliates, particularly the more remote regions. Matt Roberts from Alice Springs presented a session on “Tournament Best Practice” which was commended and appreciated by all participants.

MARKETING & EVENTS Darwin City Council July Junior Circuit
Tennis NT acknowledges the generous support of the major sponsors of the ITF Junior Circuit tournaments. RADO continued as the Naming Rights Sponsor of the ITF Junior Circuit, comprising the Darwin ITF Junior Championships and the Northern Territory ITF Junior Championships. Darwin City Council committed its support for three years as the Naming Rights sponsor of the July Junior Circuit, comprising the Darwin ITF Junior Championships, Northern Territory ITF Junior Championships, Darwin Age Titles and Schweppes NT Age Titles. Their commitment is commendable. Both ITF tournaments’ achieved full 64 draws for boys and girls. This is a remarkable achievement for regional tournaments and Tennis NT acknowledges the support of corporate sponsors, players, coaches, volunteers and Tennis Australia.
Eva Losinski serves it up at the Darwin City Council July Junior Circuit
Tennis Australia continues to support the tournaments both financially and in human resources. Rohan Lawton, Tennis Events Coordinator, provided excellent support as Tournament Director. Tennis Australia also absorbed a great deal of administrative and financial responsibility for hosting the tournaments. Marcia O’Shea and Tony Warland were fantastic as the tournament Referees for the two ITF Junior Circuit tournaments and Kym Nixon capably assumed the Referee role of the two Age Titles events. Thanks go to Ross Connolly, Steven Merker and Craig Rowell who provided adjudicating services on finals days. Peggie Stubbersfield was once again tremendous as the Sports Trainer. Peggie has been involved with the July Junior Circuit for the past nine years and her efforts are very much appreciated by the tournament staff and players. 2004 Annual Report

MARKETING & EVENTS Marketing TV Commercial The Tennis NT television commercial was updated and broadcast throughout the Northern Territory via Channel 7 Darwin and Channel 7 Central. The advertisement was aired throughout October, November, December and January in conjunction with the new series SLAM! Road to the Australian Open. As part of a sponsorship deal with Channel 7, Tennis NT was able to secure the rights to advertise as the official sponsor of this program throughout Channel 7 Darwin and Channel 7 Central. Tennis NT E-Newsletter The introduction of an on-line newsletter has added a new dimension to our marketing activities. The ENewsletter has provided increased efficiency in reaching a strong proportion of the Territory’s tennis community with important information and timely news releases. The program has the potential to grow into a major marketing tool as the recipient database continues to expand at a rapid rate, therefore reaching more people with every new issue. The introduction of the E-Newsletter has complemented the success of the website with each article featured in the publication directly linked to the Tennis NT website. E-Newsletter recipients receive the introduction to each article and a link to our website which they must click to read the remainder of the article. This has been fantastic for the promotion of the website with more people in the tennis community now aware of the benefits available through accessing the Tennis NT website. Website
www.tennisnt.com.au
The Tennis NT website provides visitors with comprehensive detail of all Tennis NT events, competitions and programs whilst also featuring the latest state, national and international news. In addition to this the website offers information about the Tennis NT organisation and affiliated organisations. Users are able to quickly access information from the Parap Village Apartments Events Calendar and download the latest tournament entry forms. The Website has quickly become one of our most important marketing tools. The continuous development of the website has ensured its status as our most effective and efficient method of communicating timely information to the tennis community. Territory Tennis Talk Tennis NT’s bi-monthly publication, Territory Tennis Talk, continued to keep the Territory tennis community informed with all the latest local tennis news, programs, events and tournament information. 2004 Annual Report

MARKETING & EVENTS Australian Tennis Magazine The Senior Points Circuit was promoted through the March and April editions with a catchy advertisement in the ‘Tennis Expo’ section. The promotion proved successful with Tennis NT receiving numerous phone calls from interstate competitors enquiring about the senior events. A bi-monthly Grassroots section was introduced into Australian Tennis Magazine mid-way through the year. The Grassroots section provided each State and Territory with the opportunity to promote grassroots tennis programs and activities. The Northern Territory’s segment grew from originally less than a page to a full two-page segment by the end of 2004. Media Whilst regular media coverage can prove difficult to obtain, it must be noted that tennis coverage in 2004 received a substantial boost from previous years. The regular circulation of media releases to local and state media outlets established a positive working relationship, which proved beneficial in gaining exposure for tennis. Events, programs and especially tournaments that had a national or international component attracted a greater response than that of local events and competitions Charlie King (ABC), Evonne Goolagong & Jon Sieben
Allied Pickfords Intra-Territory Travel Subsidy Allied Pickfords generously came on board to ensure the continuity of the very popular tournament Travel Subsidy program. Since this program was established in mid 2000, Tennis NT has supported competitors travel to Northern Territory tournaments to the value of $62,227 This is an impressive commitment to the growth and development of both metropolitan and regional tournaments. There is no doubting the value of this initiative in supporting the increase in competitors travelling to intra-Territory to tournaments. In 2005 it has been decided that Travel Subsidies will only apply to Senior Points Circuit tournaments. The Senior Points Circuit tournaments are required to provide junior events which provides all tennis players with an equal opportunity to utilise this program.

MARKETING & EVENTS Officials Kym Nixon assumed the role of Chair of the Officials Committee in 2004 and did an outstanding job of coordinating in her first year. A dedicated group of Officials improved the efficiency of the tournaments they attended. Tennis Australia’s Chief of Officials, Wayne Spencer conducted two Level 1 Referee Courses in 2004. There were 10 participants in the Darwin course and eight in the Alice Springs course. Elizabeth Grylls adjudicates the NT Open Championships Women’s Finals
NT League The NT League powered into its third season of competition. In the absence of a major sponsor, Tennis NT increased its financial support of the NT League to ensure its growth and stature as the Northern Territory’s elite tennis competition. Tennis NT acknowledges team captains, team members, coaches and the Selections Committee who all assist Tennis NT in keeping the NT League running efficiently as an elite team competition acting in the best interests of the players. Referees Kym Nixon and John Britton did a magnificent job officiating the NT League finals. It would be remiss not to acknowledge the support of the two venues namely DTC Sports and Gardens Tennis Complex. The teams are fortunate to play at facilities of this calibre. The League provides a fantastic opportunity to promote tennis via the media. The League received sufficient print media coverage throughout the finals, however the lack of print media through the regular season was disappointing. Media coverage was more consistent through local Radio, with numerous local stations providing weekly NT League reports. Ryan Popovsky unleashes a monster serve

MARKETING & EVENTS Honeycombes Hyundai NT Open Championships
Stephanie Bengson prepares to fire a serve down at her opponent.
The 2004 Honeycombes Hyundai NT Open Championships was conducted over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend in June. The event was held at the Gardens Tennis Complex. Tennis NT’s events team worked tirelessly to host a memorable NT Open Championships. The event ran extremely smoothly thanks to the fantastic efforts of our volunteer staff that assisted in the tournament office and with court supervising duties. The event attracted a strong field of interstate and local talent, providing some inspirational tennis. Finals Day drew a great crowd that witnessed some spectacular tennis. The Finals Day VIP area was the place to be to watch the singles finals, and late in the day some great doubles action. The Men’s Singles final was an all New South Wales affair with promising youngsters Ben Howen and Jeremy White making their way through to the final showdown. The final quickly developed into a fierce battle that was fought out over three tight sets but it was Howen who prevailed taking the third set 7-5 to win the Parap Cup. Queensland’s Maria Sorbello, a 2003 Women’s Open finalist, completed a rare double in 2004 taking out the Girls 18&U division and the Women’s Open event. Sorbello defeated talented New South Wales junior Stephanie Bengson 2-6 6-1 7-5 to win the Barden Trophy. Media coverage leading into the tournament was fantastic with numerous print articles and radio interviews providing increased exposure to the public. Scheduling the Darwin Open the weekend prior to the NT Open Championships increased the attraction for interstate competitors, which in turn increased media interest. Prize money and trophies to the value of $6,000.00 were on offer due to the generous support of the event sponsors. Special mention must be made of the support from major sponsor Honeycombes Hyundai who increased their support this year.

MARKETING & EVENTS Presentation Dinner Holdfast Insurance Brokers joined with Tennis Australia and Tennis NT in hosting the Annual Presentation Dinner. This is the first time a commercial sponsor has been secured for this important tennis event and we acknowledge the Holdfast partnership. Tennis Australia continued its generous funding of the event and we acknowledge their commitment to the Volunteer Involvement Program. 122 guests enjoyed a memorable evening on Saturday 28 February at the MGM Grand International Room. It is of particular importance that some of our remote regional affiliates were able to attend. Once again Tennis NT’s Vice-President, Carl Black capably assumed the role of Master of Ceremonies. Carl’s professional approach always adds an element of grandeur to the evening. The 2003 awards presentations were a feature of the night.

MARKETING & EVENTS MILO Tennis Over Australia The MILO Tennis Over Australia program entered its second year of operation. The program is a partnership between MILO, Tennis Australia, Tennis NT and the Australian Sports Commission. This year there were six clubs/affiliates involved in the MILO Tennis Over Australia program. Clubs involved in the program must be a recognised member of the ASC Club Development Network. Members of the Club Development Network gain access to a range of educational resources designed to improve club administration and promote continuous improvement. The program enables Tennis NT to provide funding to clubs/affiliates who are required to carry out a series of fun days, junior/senior tournaments and attend the Tennis NT Annual Workshop.
Club Development Workshop This component is incorporated as part of the Tennis NT Annual Workshop. Each club involved in the MILO Tennis Over Australia program must be represented at the workshop.
Fun Days Each of the six clubs involved with the program in 2004 conducted a ‘Tennis Fun Day’ at their club/facility. The Fun Days provided clubs/affiliates with a fantastic opportunity to promote the game of tennis within their region. Clubs/affiliates have the flexibility to determine whether they market tennis to the mass audience or alternatively they may choose a segment from the market and focus their efforts towards this segment.
Junior / Senior Tournaments There were seven junior and three senior MILO Tennis Over Australia Tournaments held throughout 2004. The junior tournaments were designed to provide new players with the opportunity to play their first sanctioned tournament in a friendly environment focused on development rather than results. The senior tournaments were standard based events that employed the new International Tennis Number (ITN) system. This system groups players of similar abilities to ensure an even standard of competition.

FINANCIAL NOTES NOTE 6. TENNIS AUSTRALIA GRANTS Tennis Australia provides specific funding support for national programs and supports the Northern Territory’s two ITF Junior Circuit tournaments. Additionally Tennis Australia distributes a percentage of surplus funds to Member Associations. Due to a Constitutional change by Tennis Australia the Northern Territory, along with some of the other Member Associations would have been severely affected financially. Consequently the “Administration Support Grant” was introduced for a two-year trial period. This funding also absorbed the old Equalisation Grant. Tennis Australia formed a Distribution & Grants Sub-committee to review Member Association funding models. This review is due for completion in May 2005. NOTE 7. NT GOVERNMENT GRANTS In 2003 Tennis NT was successful in achieving a three-year grant period agreement, an initiative of the NT Government to reform both the grants and respective reporting processes. Grants are now paid annually with 10% withheld pending receipt of the acquittal report. Grants from the NT Government are provided in a general framework and are to be used by the recipient organisation so that it achieves the objectives set out in its grant application. NOTE 8. SPECIAL GRANTS Two additional grants were secured during this reporting period. (1) $750.00 for scoreboards through the Community Benefits Grants Program (2) $750.00 contribution for the General Manager to attend the Leaders in Sport Conference. NOTE 9. INSURANCE 2004 saw the establishment of a comprehensive NT Insurance Program that delivered cover for Public & Products Liability, Professional Indemnity and Directors & Officers Insurance at a very competitive premium. This deal was negotiated by Tennis NT with Honan Risk & Insurance Brokers and was promoted as an optional membership benefit. Premiums were invoiced to cover the cost. The majority of affiliates participated in the program. NOTE 10. MISCELLANEOUS After many years the dissolution process for the Darwin Junior Tennis Association (DJTA) was achieved. The DJTA Constitution named Tennis NT, as the beneficiary should the association dissolve. This process was set in motion by the immediate past President, Craig Henson on 23 July 1998. The dissolution amount was $5,829.79 The balance of this income is made up of outstanding cheques being ‘written back’. NOTE 11. FINANCIAL NOTES NOTE 13. NT LEAGUE Unfortunately Tennis NT was not able to secure a sponsor for the 2004 League. It was agreed to continue with the League but work with stakeholders to reduce the expenditure. It is commendable that DTC Sports and Gardens Tennis Complex agreed to the reviewed conditions. Team Registration Fees were absorbed into court hire costs. NOTE 14. REMUNERATION CONTINGENCIES This expenditure item was used as an ‘honorarium’ for additional office assistance in lieu of being one staff member short for the first three months of the year. NOTE 15. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY A replacement fileserver, UPS system, back-up system plus a new computer were purchased. NOTE 16. DEFICIT A deficit budget of $33,100.00 was being managed in 2004 with the view that it was necessary to rely on reserves to ensure programs were consolidated. The deficit was ‘reigned’ in significantly producing a better than anticipated result.
