Its establishment was the shared vision of the founding President, Mr Max Horton and a small group of interested tennis players. Tennis NT Strategic Intent It is the intent of Tennis NT to provide as many people as possible with the opportunity to be involved with the sport of tennis throughout our regions. This will form the core of our thinking in terms of physical and organisational access. TENNISNT-CREPORT ONTENTS TENNIS NT – PRESIDENT’S

I am pleased to be able to present the 27th Annual Report and Financial Statements of Tennis NT for the period January – December 2006. Through the combined efforts and strong partnership of Tennis NT and its affiliates, sponsors and the NT tennis community the popularity and participation in tennis continue to grow in all regions of the Northern Territory. Tennis NT has continued to progress changes at all levels of its business and operations, the first being formalisation of our trading name to Tennis NT and approval of our constitution in line with new NT Associations Act. Positive changes at the national level being led by Tennis Australia have also continued to impact on the Northern Territory. The most significant change for Tennis NT has been in player development with Tennis Australia and Tennis SA committing to a player development model that provides NT athletes direct access to National High Performance Academy programs. Ashlee Brown is one of our current athletes that is already benefiting from this program. Tennis NT is now well positioned to strengthen its focus on club development and participation programs well into the future. Tennis NT has continued to lobby the NT Government for new facilities in Alice Springs and Darwin with little effect. While tennis is recognised as well organised, successful and a high participation sport, these qualities appear to have little effect when it comes to current NT Government policy and action. Tennis NT will continue to lobby for facilities in all our regions that meet national and international standards. As change progresses it is inevitable that an organisation will experience changes in its staffing structure and Tennis NT has been no different. Mr. Rohan Fisher our Player Development Manager resigned his position and on behalf of athletes, coaches, parents and Tennis NT I would like to thank Rohan for his commitment to the sport and the NT. Tennis NT is very fortunate that Rohan will continue his association through the new Tennis Australia player development model. Tennis NT does not intend at this stage to reappoint to this position. Tennis NT has said farewell to General Manager Mrs. Di McDonald who resigned in the latter part of the year due to family reasons. Throughout her time at Tennis NT Di set very high standards in all areas. She was, and will continue to be, a passionate advocate for the sport and made significant contribution to the development of the sport at both National and Interstate levels. On behalf of all Tennis NT stakeholders I thank Di for her significant contribution and wish her and her family every success into the future. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Ms. Olivia Birkett to the role of General Manager. Olivia is well credentialed to lead Tennis NT through our next period of change and will be supported by Sean Barrett (Marketing and Events) and Robyn Stanley (Administrative Support) in progressing the objectives of Tennis NT. A special thank you to our network of sponsors, coaches, volunteers, officials and administrators who contribute their time and effort to supporting the sport of tennis within the Northern Territory. It is important to acknowledge the continuing support provided to Tennis NT by Tennis Australia, Kids Tennis Foundation, our State and Territory colleagues and the Northern Territory Government. ENNISNT–GMANAGER’S ENERALMANAGEREPORT R’SREPORT TENNIS NT – T GENERAL Since assuming the position of General Manager in November 2006, I have been learning as much as possible about Tennis NT, its affiliates, members and background. I would like to start this report by thanking the Tennis NT staff, board, Regional Development Officers, affiliates and various coaches and members for their support. They have all helped by answering my questions and providing me with their ideas and comments about the future of tennis in the Northern Territory. I also extend my thanks to Di MacDonald who has assisted me with the finances to year end and provided overall guidance in our handover phase. Di has positioned Tennis NT as a leading peak sporting organisation in the Northern Territory and I aim to continue this reputation and build upon it in future years. “Continuity gives us roots; change gives us branches, letting us stretch and grow and reach new heights.” Pauline R. Kezer The staffing structure of Tennis NT has changed significantly in 2006. In October, Di MacDonald retired from her position as General Manager and Rohan Fisher, Player Development Manager, accepted the position of National High Performance Academy (NHPA) Manager in Adelaide. Tennis Australia has been making changes as well. The alterations to the national player development structure have been a major focus at Tennis Australia and have impacted upon the way Tennis NT manages player development. Other initiatives from Tennis Australia, including Hot Shots, Find a Partner and their national re-branding, are all aspects that Tennis NT need to work with. The new national website is www.tennis.com.au where you will find more information about these initiatives. Funding from Tennis Australia has slightly decreased from last year, however we are gaining support from Tennis Australia in other ways, including more assistance for Tennis NT staff through expertise in Melbourne. Whilst the changes to structure and finance can be difficult initially to understand and work with, ultimately tennis in the Northern Territory needs to embrace these and alter the way we think about tennis delivery. With our unique geography, location and climate, initiatives and proposed changes may need to be tweaked to suit tennis in the Northern Territory. Lateral and positive thinking is required from all staff, board and affiliates jointly, to ensure that Tennis NT strengthens its eminence as a peak sporting body, both in the Northern Territory and in Australia. As I have only been in post for 1/6 of the year, I will leave the remainder of this annual report to explain the major activities and financial position of Tennis NT for 2006. I thank you again for your encouragement and support during the first months of my new position. There is obvious passion and loyalty both to tennis and Tennis NT from members I have spoken to, and I trust we will receive your continual positive backing as we lead Tennis NT into 2007 and beyond. TENNISNTNT –GE ERALMANAGER’STENNIS REPORT TENNIS –NCOMMUNITY Facility Development The ‘Territory Tennis Centre’ concept is still ongoing and Tennis NT’s position about the proposal has not changed significantly from last year. There is more lobbying required of the NT Government and new ideas and concepts emerging from Tennis Australia that may help to shape the direction of this proposed centre. Tennis NT’s affiliates have been busy improving their own facilities: Alice Springs Tennis Club – Resurfaced 6 hardcourts at their 10 court centre. Tennis Borroloola – accessed an NT Government Sport and Recreation grant to upgrade their facility. DTC Sports Coconut Grove – Completed extensive renovations to club house which involved the move of their pro shop. Gardens Tennis Complex – Purchased new nets for 5 courts. Gove Peninsular Tennis Club – Completed extension of court surface, built a storage shed, erected a fence around the rear of the complex and put up shade sails over spectator area. Katherine Tennis Club – The April flood caused major problems to courts but the club was able to patch them up to a suitable point for tournaments in 2006. Significant renovations to the courts will be completed in 2007.

Photos from the April 2006 flood at the Katherine Tennis Club facilities Insurance In 2006 Tennis Australia appointed Marsh Pty Ltd to develop a National Insurance Program. Extensive research of all the Member Association’s current insurance polices was conducted by Marsh over a number of months. They have matched the lowest prices in any Member Association over the three main areas of insurance (Public Liability, Professional Indemnity and Personal Accident Insurance), to ensure that no state/territory will be worse off in any area under a National Insurance Program. Nationally, Marsh also cover the insurance in Tennis Australia’s Coach Membership, which Tennis NT encourages all coaches to sign up for. In 2007 Marsh are looking to prepare optional business cover for clubs and provide a website that clubs and members can access for information. Under the new National Insurance Program, all paid and registered Tennis NT members will automatically receive Personal Accident Insurance, which is a change from last year. Tennis NT membership fees, which include the amount for insurance, will remain the same in 2007. 2006 Annual Report

TENNISNTNT –GE ERALMANAGER’STENNIS REPORT TENNIS –NCOMMUNITY Indigenous Tennis Program The Indigenous Tennis Program was conducted in the Northern (Numbulwar and Yirrkala), Central (Borroloola) and Southern (Alice Springs and Tennant Creek including eight surrounding communities) Regions. The Regional Development Officers that facilitated the program enthusiastically brought tennis expertise to these communities. Whether driving long, difficult roads or flying in chartered light planes, the officers accessed many parts of the Northern Territory and, whether structured or improvised, ran some great tennis sessions. The Northern Territory Government office of Sport and Recreation Indigenous Sport Unit supports this program both financially and with support from officers based in different areas of the Northern Territory. The Australian Sports Commission, through Tennis Australia also fund the program which enables people in outlying communities to have a go at tennis. Wilson again sponsored equipment for this program, which allowed communities to access racquets, nets and balls after the coaching sessions were held, ensuring longevity of the program.

Tarlina Tipungwuti, born at Bathurst Island, started playing tennis in Kununurra before moving to Gove and is currently an NTIS tennis player based in Darwin.

TENNISNTNT –GE–NE RALMANAGER’STENNIS REPORT TENNIS COMMUNITY Membership and Player Registration Tennis NT again offered a range of membership options in 2006. A combination of the Registered Player fee, Court fee and Tennis NT Direct Membership saw early signs of strong membership. Overall however, numbers dipped from last year, as demonstrated in the table below. DTC Sports - Sanderson disbanded with the departure of coach Andrew Swinson and Tennis Borroloola felt the effects when long time volunteer Delia Farlam moved away. The club manager and Regional Development Officer at both Katherine Tennis Club (Steve Merker) and Alice Springs Tennis Association (Matthew Roberts) have moved on to other tennis opportunities in different states.

Highlights from the program in 2006 include: Northern Region - Gove Peninsular Tennis Club’s ongoing upgrade of facilities, the growth of their tennis in schools program and the continuation of their player development. Central Region – After a major flood in Katherine, they hosted the Katherine Open one month later, followed by the NT primary school exchange and continue to work closely with Tennis Borroloola. Southern Region – Of the 13 athletes selected for the Evonne Goolagong National Development Camp for indigenous athletes, 5 were from NT and 4 of these from Alice Springs. One athlete was a direct result of the ITP program. There was also record participation in all tournaments, including high numbers of senior women. Both Steven Merker and Matthew Roberts are moving on to other tennis positions in Queensland and New South Wales respectively. Tennis NT thanks them for their hard work and enthusiasm and appreciate that they will be difficult to replace. TENNINT SNT––PLAYER GENERALMDEVELOPMENT ANAGER’SREPORT TENNIS 2006 saw a number of firsts for player development in the Northern Territory. Ashlee Brown, Kassandra Dunser and Adil Hakeem were selected to represent Australia overseas. Adil Hakeem, Nancy Ferguson & Ashlee Brown currently hold ITF rankings, with all three ranked under 320. Samantha Lim and Ashlee Brown were selected into National Camps. Kassandra Dunser and Emma Labessa combined to make a National doubles final. Ashlee Brown became the first NT athlete to win a wildcard into the Australian Open Junior Singles Championship. This year has seen NT tennis build on 2005 achievements which at the time was termed a pivotal year. It is with great pride and honor that I present the Player Development Manager’s Report for 2006. 2006 Squad Programs Swinger Enhancement Program (SEP) Eleven athletes were selected from four affiliates. Affiliates involved were Alice Springs Tennis Association (6), DTC Sports (2), Darwin Tennis Association (2) and Gove Peninsula Tennis Centre (1). Selena O’Sullivan is the first athlete from Gove to be selected in a SEP program which is testament to the great work of Nicky Mayer and her regional program. SEP was again successful for those who choose to use the technical information provided from the video analysis system. Technical development at a young age cannot be underestimated and I challenge all NT coaches to embrace technique for a young athlete with the attention it requires.

Project 12s Squad Seven athletes were selected from three affiliates. The affiliates involved were Alice Springs Tennis Association (2), DTC Sports (3) and Darwin Tennis Association (2). The Project 12s athletes work exclusively in their club environment and the success of these athletes rests greatly on their private coach. Special mention must be made of Emma Labessa and Kassandra Dunser and their coach Pat Coburn who together created NT history by becoming the first NT pair to play in a national doubles final in September of 2006. Well done to all here. The program again this year was conducted in line with the SEP program. All seven athletes were invited to the 12/U Winter Hardcourts Tournament in Brisbane. Six athletes traveled to Brisbane for this event. Up2U Squad Thirteen athletes attended the 2006 Up2U Camp. It was conducted over two days as a lead-in to the 14/U National points event in Alice Springs during November. The athletes involved in the camp included the seven Project 12s squad members. They were given an insight to a number of aspects of what an NTIS athlete would experience. The camp was again a great success. Special thanks must go to Ashlee Brown who assisted throughout the entire camp.

14

TENNINT SNT––PLAYER GENERALMDEVELOPMENT ANAGER’SREPORT TENNIS State Squad This program had two Alice Springs and four Darwin based athletes. All athletes competed in National Points Tournaments throughout the year. Five of the six athletes made National points finals. As a collective group this squad competed in all eight states and territories of Australia. State Squad member Roland Ah Chee received a full scholarship to The Southport School in Queensland for his tennis. This was the inaugural sporting scholarship for TSS. A special mention must be made to of Evonne and Roger Goolagong who assisted Roland to obtain this full scholarship. NTIS Squad Eight athletes were selected into the 2006 program with mixed results. Some athletes achieved outstanding results whilst others found the demands of the program too much and others have found interests outside of tennis. Having 3 athletes with exceptional ITF rankings and one of these athletes holding a World Senior Ranking is a testament to the success of the NTIS program over the years. Listed below are the countries and interstate cities that NTIS athletes have traveled to for tournaments been to over the past 12 months: New Zealand, Fiji, New Caledonia, Malaysia, Morrocco, Bendigo, Traralgon, Melbourne, Hobart, Melbourne, Adelaide, Gosford, Mildura, Rockhampton, Hope Island, Gladstone, Perth, Canberra and Brisbane. Coach Education Tennis NT in conjunction with TCA-NT conducted Development Coaches Courses in both Darwin and Alice Springs with a total of 12 participants. At the time of writing this 8 participants successfully achieved their qualification. Steven Merker from Katherine Tennis Club successfully completed his Advanced Coaching Qualification and Rohan Fisher achieved his Elite Coaching Qualification in 2006.

Professional Development Workshops Six coach education sessions workshops were conducted in Darwin and three were held in Alice Springs during 2006. The SEP and Project 12s programs also provided the opportunity to work with seven different coaches from across the Northern Territory.

2006 Annual Report

15

TENNIS NT––G ENERALMAN AGER’SREPORT TENNIS NT PLAYER DEVELOPMENT FIT (Future in Tennis) Camp This camp continues to prosper. The participants in this camp were Breanna Drew, Anna Grosse, Matthew Ansell, Domenic De Nichilo, James Doheny, Daniel Murden, Damien Chesson, Jake Mayer and Lindsay O’Hea. The camp provided sessions on coaching, court supervising, restringing, TMS, careers in sport and club management. A number of participants from previous FIT camps have this year undertaken and successfully completed their Development Coaching qualification.

Regional Development The development of elite Territory athletes in regional areas continues to grow. Four regional athletes competed at a National Championship with two athletes winning their first round there. Six visits were made to Alice Springs during 2006 to work with NTIS, State, Project 12s and SEP Squad athletes. Continued work in developing regional programs and the coaches themselves is imperative to the future success in regional areas. WANT Program This agreement is in its second year. Ashlee Brown traveled with WA State Coach Milo Bradley to two Women’s International tournaments in New Zealand. Nancy Ferguson went to the 16s Claycourt Nationals with Tennis West coach Alistair Todd and Adil Hakeem and Nancy Ferguson traveled to New Caledonia, Fiji and New Zealand with Milo Bradley. Tennis NT assisted Western Australian athletes at the 16s Hardcourt Nationals in Bendigo, ITF’s in Adelaide, Gosford, Darwin and New Zealand and the 12s/14s Winter Nationals in Brisbane. The arrangement in place provides NT athletes with training partners and strength in numbers at events. This agreement is one we need to continue and build similar touring arrangements with other States/Territories where and when possible, as it is crucial to our continued player development success.

Tennis Australia Tennis Australia’s Director of Player Development Craig Tiley attended Tennis NT’s workshop in early 2006. There he presented TA’s Player Development Strategic objectives. One year later these objectives are really starting to take shape. There is no doubt Player Development in Australia now has a more coordinated and integrated national program. It has improved its pathways with clearly defined entry and exit points has improved the quality and quantity of professional competitive playing opportunities throughout the year. Tennis Australia has provided substantial financial assistance to Tennis NT for Player Development. It has also assisted individual athletes in the Territory through participation opportunities in tours and tournaments it has coordinated and conducted.

TENNI SN–T– GENERALM ANAGER’SREPORT TENNIS NT PLAYER DEVELOPMENT Acknowledgements A number of individuals are to be thanked for volunteering at various times throughout the year to support athletes on tour. They include Benita Bittner, Matthew Roberts, Steven Merker, Pat Coburn, Kim Cardile, Warren Foote and Liz Grylls. NTIS Strength and Conditioning Coach Kia Naylor has been an outstanding contributor to our 2006 program. Special thanks must go to Kim Cardile for her continued support. Kim recently has left the NTIS and Tennis NT would like to thank her for all the work she done for Northern Territory tennis over the years. To the staff at Tennis NT, a big thanks to Robyn Stanley, Sean Barrett and Olivia Birkett for their continued support and the countless hours they spend on Player Development for Tennis in the Northern Territory. Finally to Di MacDonald, we all know the work, commitment, effort, dedication and passion that Di has for Tennis in the Territory and Australia. In my travels around Australia the respect and admiration for Di from her peers is amazing. Di should always be remembered as a pioneer of Tennis in the Territory as she provided us with a vision and direction that has us in the financially stable, well respected position we now enjoy. Thank you Di. I in particular will miss Di the most in the office as that now makes me the shortest person when I am there! Where to Now? The restructuring of Player Development in the Northern Territory is quite exciting. It provides our athletes with greater pathways, while at the same time it strengthens the dynamics at the club level. It is a new direction which requires important planning. It will work and will be better in the long run for all stakeholders. There is no doubt that major change is challenging to all, this year’s quote is taken from a document I received from Craig Tiley: “Change is hard because people overestimate the value of what they have and underestimate the value of what they may gain by giving it up” Rohan Fisher Player Development Manager (Resigned 27/10/06) NHPA Manager Adelaide and working with NT (Commenced 30/10/06)

TENNISNT NT––G ENERALMANAG& ER’EVENTS SREPORT TENNIS MARKETING Holdfast Annual Industry Workshop The Tennis NT (TNT) Annual Industry Workshop provides the Northern Territory tennis community with opportunities to advance their knowledge and understanding of current developments and issues facing the sport. Regional and metropolitan stakeholders from across the Territory access professional presenters on a diverse range of topics relevant to issues presently impacting on the local tennis industry. A major benefit derived from this event stems from the interactive information sharing between stakeholders. The combination of creative minds from varied levels of involvement, facilitates a productive environment of support and inspiration to a dedicated group of tennis professionals leading into a hectic season of tennis. The key focus of the 2006 workshop addressed the changing dynamics of player development within Australia. Craig Tiley (pictured), Tennis Australia’s newly appointed Director of Player Development, introduced the NT tennis community to the new national program through his presentation titled ‘The Way Forward’. The informative session provided stakeholders with a clear indication of the national direction for player development, and demonstrated how the NT would be integrated into the national program. Tiley also delivered two on-court sessions specifically targeted to coaching participants. The ‘Big Strokes for Little Folks’ and ‘Application of Scientific Principles to Decision Making on Court’ presentations generated considerable interest and discussion amongst attendees. TNT president, Sandra Smiles, opened the event by welcoming all participants and delivering a short presentation on the progress of the Territory Tennis Centre. Rohan Fisher, TNT Player Development Manager, showcased the development of a national champion from within the NT. Titled ‘A National Title: Born, Bred & Living in the Territory’, the presentation analysed the fundamental components that had contributed to Ashlee Brown’s success on the national stage. TNT board member Carl Black and General Manager Di MacDonald updated administrators and committee members on important changes in the areas of Constitutional Reform and Insurance, whilst fellow TNT board member Ross Connolly portrayed the benefits to clubs of maximising grant opportunities. TNT vice-president Pat Coburn delivered an interactive session that enabled group discussion between club managers operating across the regions. Club committee members met as a separate group to discuss common issues impacting on clubs across the Territory. The segment was well received by both groups, with participants gaining a superior understanding of the common issues and differences between each region. The end result produced a committed tennis network operating across the Territory.

Tennis NT acknowledges the generous support of the major sponsors of the ITF Junior Circuit tournaments. Special mention must be made of the significant support from the Power and Water Corporation, signing as the naming-rights sponsor of the July Junior Circuit. TENNISNT NT––G ENERALMANAG& ER’EVENTS SREPORT TENNIS MARKETING Marketing Tennis NT Website – www.tennisnt.com.au The Tennis NT website has proven an important communication tool with both members and the general community. The site features the latest state, national and international tennis news, along with specific details of Tennis NT’s programs and events. The continuous development of the website has ensured its status as our most effective and efficient method of communicating timely information to the tennis community. Australian Tennis Magazine The continuation of the bi-monthly ‘Grassroots’ segment enhanced the promotion of the programs and events conducted throughout the Northern Territory. The publication provides exposure to a national audience as well as through the Asia-Pacific region. Tennis NT E-Newsletter This valuable resource has proven extremely popular with the local tennis industry and associated stakeholders. The growth of the bimonthly publication has increased tennis’ ability to market events, programs, achievements and local news throughout the tennis community. The E-Newsletter has complemented the success of the website with each article featured in the publication directly linked to the Tennis NT website. E-Newsletter recipients receive the introduction to each article and a link to our website which they must click to read the remainder of the article. This has been fantastic for the promotion of the website with more people in the tennis community now aware of the benefits available through accessing the Tennis NT website. TV Commercial The Tennis NT television commercial received phenomenal exposure throughout the Territory in 2006. Through a sustained partnership with Southern Cross Television the advertisement experienced a considerable broadcasting increase during peak advertising periods. This resulted in raised profile of the sport and a notably higher frequency of tennis enquiries from the general public. Media The regular circulation of media releases to local and state media outlets proved beneficial in gaining exposure for tennis. Print media outlets continued to provide considerable tennis exposure primarily due to commendable performances from NTIS athletes. Events, programs and especially national and international tournaments produced greater interest from a variety of media sources. 2006 Annual Report

TENNISNT NT– ENERALMANAGE SREPORT TENNIS –G MARKETING &R’EVENTS Honeycombes NT Open Championships The 2006 Honeycombes NT Open Championships provided tennis enthusiasts with a tremendous Queen’s Birthday weekend. A record 162 competitors competed across 27 events with a sharp increase in interstate participation with over 40 players travelling to the prestigious Territory event. The increase in visiting players was predominately due to the introduction of a Tennis Australia camp for the top under 14 Australian players. The camp participants were based in Darwin for the week prior to the event spending their time training in the different climate and completing a host of activities designed to develop the necessary skills for future international travel. Tennis NT’s events team worked tirelessly to host an exceptional NT Open Championships. The event’s success was a direct reflection of the fantastic efforts from volunteer staff that assisted in the tournament office and with court supervising duties. The Group 1 Senior Points Circuit event attracted visitors from every Australian state and territory with a strong Northern Territory contingent. Spectators enjoyed some inspirational tennis, particularly from the popular VIP area that congregated for the open finals. The Men’s Singles Championship presented a multitude of potential winners with the top four seeds progressing through to the semifinals. Defending champion Scott Robertson, South Australia, returned from collegiate tennis in America looking for back-to-back titles however he was eliminated by top seed Chris Letcher from Alice Springs. In the second semi-final promising NTIS athlete Adil Hakeem found the experience of fellow Darwinite Jed Stanford too much to overcome. In a tight final Letcher was able to recover from a slow start to claim his first Parap Cup, eventually winning 4-6 7-6(8-6) 6-3. In the Women’s Singles Championship NTIS athlete Nancy Ferguson captured her first NT Senior Points Circuit title. The teenage sensation found the formula she had been searching for over the past month to defeat former top level Canberran, Amanda Grahame. Ferguson, 15, had failed to beat her senior counterpart in their previous two encounters but the determined youngster executed her gameplan to perfection and proved too powerful for the crafty lefthander, winning the Barden Trophy in straight sets, 6-4 6-4.

Officials Tennis Australia’s chief of officials, Wayne Spencer delivered Level 1 Referee courses in Darwin and Alice Springs during April. Tennis NT conducted Court Supervisor courses in Katherine, Darwin and Gove throughout 2006. These courses were extremely valuable in building the base of officials across the Territory and we hope that more people will feel inclined to become involved as an official as we continually strive to improve the quality of our events. Kym Nixon continued in the role of Chair of the Officials Committee, providing outstanding support coordinating a dedicated group of volunteer officials for a range of Northern Territory events.
