o nos alcanza el tiempo para decir todo lo que queremos decir. Hay líneas de tiempo, plazos y ritmos que no son sólo nuestros. No nos alcanzan las manos para hacer todo lo que queremos hacer. Si pudiéramos, de seguro estaríamos ahí todos los días poniendo el cuerpo por las causas individuales y compartidas. No nos alcanzan los presupuestos, los espacios, las ideas, las alianzas, los encuentros, porque las carencias son muchas y la lucha es larga. No nos alcanzan las fuerzas. Nos cansamos, nos equivocamos y nos frustramos.

Quizás toda esa frustración es la que luego regeneramos y convertimos en nuevas energías, precisamente porque hemos aprendido a creer tanto en nuestros logros como en nuestros fracasos.

Más aún, es al encontrarnos con otras que logramos entender, desde la pluralidad de miradas y experiencias, eso que se vive y resiste dentro de nuestros campos de acción en el arte y la cultura. Por esta razón, lo que sí tenemos son ganas: ganas de contar lo que hicimos, vimos y sentimos cuando estuvimos juntas. Nos emociona pensar en la posibilidad de volver las miradas hacia dentro, ser autocríticas y compartir lo aprendido en el proceso para continuar esa resistencia y apoyarnos, ofreciendo nuestras reflexiones a quienes necesiten ese acompañamiento.

En esta ocasión, el aprendizaje que queremos compartir se da a partir del hacer y gestionar, de conectar y convivir. No nos dan las manos y se nos escapa el tiempo, mientras las urgencias siguen siendo muchas y la mayoría del trabajo para lograr lo que el público experimenta queda en la penumbra de lo desconocido. En este contexto, esa carga se hace posible de llevar cuando nos juntamos con amigas y colaboradoras para hacer las reflexiones necesarias sobre los múltiples “cómos” del trabajo de los espacios artísticos, los colectivos y los proyectos de distintas naturalezas. A la vez, es posible hacer visible, a través de esas conversaciones, el pensamiento y el quehacer que construyen los espacios de encuentro desde el arte.

Intentando acercarnos un poco más a eso que a menudo no se ve, pero que nos sostiene y le da cimientos al trabajo, esta Buchaca es una forma más de compartir los retos, posibles soluciones, y diálogos críticos con tantas personas que nos acompañan en nuestro pensar y hacer. Esperamos sea un lugar donde el encuentro y el descanso contribuyan a gestar otros caminos para posibles proyectos.

n agosto de 2018 fui invitada a TEOR/éTica con Alina Hernández representando al colectivo La Hervidera para abrir un laboratorio titulado “Arte para flexibilizar la educación”.

Utilizamos el espacio de La MAE (Memoria Artes Escénicas) y se congregó un grupo de quince educadoras, talleristas y artistas, la mayoría de Costa Rica y algunas de Nicaragua y Panamá.

Durante aquellos días, nos dedicamos a explorar estrategias artísticas que nos permitieran construir un lenguaje común, reflexionamos sobre las posibilidades e imposibilidades para modificar a nuestro favor las estructuras educativas en las que cada una estaba inserta. Intentamos conocernos un poco, en una búsqueda de complicidades e historias comunes.

La experiencia en San José, con cada una de estas personas, me impactó. Fue transformador encontrar otras problemáticas y luchas, otras posibilidades de ser institución, educadora y artista en un contexto precariado como el mío, como toda Latinoamérica, pero a la vez tan diferente. Como no podía concentrar la complejidad de estas vivencias en un texto descriptivo, decidí escribir desde mi visión subjetiva, lo que podría ser el sueño colectivo de quienes nos encontramos ahí.

Soy parte de un organismo cultural vivo. Siento mi cuerpo, mi interior es suave y cálido, mi piel es dura y multicolor.

Estoy en desarrollo, aún soy joven, me hace falta crecimiento y aprendizaje. Mi esqueleto está cubierto por tejidos que me revelan una posibilidad de actuar en el mundo desde acciones simbólicas y sensibles hacia algún tipo de reparación social. Los problemas son muchos porque estoy en una sociedad bastante tóxica. Algunas de mis acciones tienen un efecto inmediato y me pregunto: ¿alguien puede beneficiarse de mi existencia?

Tener un buen impacto en el mundo es mucho más complicado de lo que me imaginé. Me siento frustrada pero sigo adelante, reubico mis objetivos, trato de actuar de forma puntual, un paso a la vez, con pequeñas acciones que puedan (tal vez) lograr cambios significativos.

Las situaciones de las personas a las que me dirijo superan lo que tengo para ofrecer, lo intento pero las características de mi cuerpo no me permiten sanar otros organismos ni resolver sus condiciones estructurales de violencia y pobreza. Tener un buen impacto en el mundo es mucho más complicado de lo que me imaginé. Me siento frustrada pero sigo adelante, reubico mis objetivos, trato de actuar de forma puntual, un paso a la vez, con pequeñas acciones que puedan (tal vez) lograr cambios significativos.

Mi paso se pone denso y cansado, me siento enferma, no sé cómo sanarme. Tengo que lograr una comunicación interna, una unidad con mi cuerpo, pero mi lenguaje no es verbal y mis órganos están desconectados. No tengo canales para escucharme a mí misma, mi cabeza no quiere pensar, se aburre fácilmente, prefiere que me comunique

con indicadores y estadísticas. Aunque los números no son mi mejor lenguaje, lo intento, hago una selección de imágenes, traduzco lo sensible a palabras, una cápsula, pdf, un remedio power-point...Eso sirve, al menos por ahora puedo continuar.

La frustración continúa. Veo que es algo común en los organismos culturales con interés social. A pesar de que conceptos como “pensamiento crítico” y “colaboración” son parte de los discursos constitutivos de varias especies, la realidad es que sus cuerpos no presentan arterias realmente críticas y sus órganos trabajan desvinculados unos de otros.

Puede ser que en algún lugar existan otras formas de vida.

Me impresiona su estado de salud, las personas que la constituyen se escuchan entre ellas y también escuchan a aquellas a las que sus acciones se dirigen, parece que quieren entender cómo es que el organismo es percibido y a qué procesos aporta de forma consciente e inconsciente.

conmigo para desarrollarme mejor, cumplir mis objetivos y sufrir menos. Levanto la mirada y me topo con otro organismo cultural vivo.

Estoy frente a ella, una institución plástica. Se encuentra en un ejercicio de auto-observación y se pregunta cuál es su función dentro del contexto que habita. Me impresiona su estado de salud, las personas que la constituyen se escuchan entre ellas y también escuchan a aquellas a las que sus acciones se dirigen, parece que quieren entender cómo es que el organismo es percibido y a qué procesos aporta de forma consciente e inconsciente.

Su esqueleto tiene una flexibilidad estructural que le permite transformarse ante las necesidades del espacio y del tiempo presente, desarrolla una metodología de desarticulación constante. Se piensa a sí misma y esto

significa diferentes cabezas pensándose al mismo tiempo, una agencia heterogénea, que a través de la diversidad construye una identidad colectiva, unificada por objetivos comunes y mutantes.

No me lo creo. Me doy cuenta de que sus límites no están definidos, sus extremidades están desvinculadas de su torso. Tiene una antena por aquí, un ala por allá, unos dedos cerca y unas garras lejos, lo que mantiene sus órganos unidos es un tejido social de relaciones afectivas, los conflictos y las crisis son procesos que le enferman, pero de alguna manera, aceptar su vulnerabilidad la hace mas fuerte. Cada vez que se recupera, aparece más robusta y rozagante.

Me abstraje un momento, pero volteo a verme y ya no soy la misma. Siento miedo, intento ubicarme, pero ya no tengo la forma de antes ¡Perdí los órganos de mi cuerpo anterior! ¿Estoy flotando por ahí? No, solo perdí la cabeza. Estoy unida a este nuevo organismo, aunque me encuentro separada de él, siento como compartimos impulsos y fluidos, incluso pensamientos. ¿Cómo es que esto está pasando? ¿Qué significa? Tal vez soy un parásito y mi existencia depende de saltar de cuerpo en cuerpo.

La idea me inquieta.

Me concentro. Mi objetivo era ser un cuerpo que actúa desde lo simbólico y lo sensible hacia algún tipo de reparación social, para eso, tal vez, no necesito una cabeza. ¿Qué necesito reparar? Me siento mareada ¿Cómo me reparo a mí misma? Respiro, una, dos, tres veces.

Hay un silencio. Una voz lejana responde: - Todo.

- ¿Y cómo hacemos eso?

- No sé, por ahora estamos tratando de reconocernos, creemos que eso puede ayudar a entender cuál es la dirección y cómo llegar.

- ¿Me reconoces?

- Claro, pues tu eres parte de este organismo ¿No me reconoces tú a mí?

- Pues ahora que lo dices…te me haces muy familiar.

Todas las voces ríen.

Me doblo todo lo que puedo, relajo, me estiro y siento que mis límites son flexibles. Necesito hablar con alguien y hago sonar mi voz hacia dentro, me responde el organismo al que estoy unido, que a su vez ahora está unido a unos cuantos más. Escucho muchas voces, hablan cosas que no logro entender. Volteo a mi alrededor y veo mi cuerpo, que realmente, no me había detenido a observar. Me salen tripas y venas que se extienden hasta muy lejos y hacia todas direcciones, somos un mega organismo hablante.

Me preparo a hacer la pregunta y la digo alto, con firmeza para que me escuchen los que están más lejos: -¿Qué necesitamos reparar?-

Nuestro organismo se fortalece pero la sociedad sigue siendo tóxica. Pienso que estoy unida con ellas en posibilidades del futuro. Nuestras acciones inmediatas tienen impactos y potenciales positivos, pequeños pero situados.

No bajamos la guardia ni nos dejamos de escuchar entre nosotras, irrumpen voces de vez en cuando en el murmullo general, para ubicarnos en el tiempo y el espacio. Intentamos mantenernos sanas como personas y organismo cultural, lo hacemos desde el pensamiento crítico y la colaboración. Siento un pálpito, un ritmo que me menea de un lado al otro, el organismo se mueve.

Decido, no me resisto, siento el ritmo.

El siguiente glosario se compuso a ocho manos para la presentación de los modos de hacer de TEOR/éTica en el MUAC-UNAM, como parte del encuentro de la Red de Pedagogías Empáticas en Ciudad de México, noviembre 2018.

la alteridad? ¿Cómo dar lugar al azar, sin programarlo? ¿Cómo sostener una “gentileza” que permita la emergencia de un hablar allí donde crece el desierto afectivo?

Relato plural

Afines + afectos

TEOR/éTica es un relato plural. Queremos construir una narrativa generosa, que lejos de homogeneizar o suprimir las voces individuales de todos lo que somos partícipes de esta construcción, sepa reconocer las individualidades y potenciar los distintos puntos de vista. Desde ahí nos surgen muchas preguntas. Algunas las re-encontramos articuladas de una manera muy linda en un texto que nos compartió Mónica Hoff: Cómo vivir solos, de Peter Pal Pelbart en Filosofías de la Deserción:

Personas con quienes hemos encontrado territorios comunes desde los cuales construir alternativas a procesos y formas que cuestionamos. No siempre nos parecemos, no siempre estamos de acuerdo, no venimos de los mismos lugares, ni buscamos llegar a un mismo sitio, o por las mismas vías. Somos una red intermitente, fluida y espontánea de apoyos, desde la cual intercambiamos conocimientos y dudas; buscando aprender y desaprender. A muchas las hemos invitado a nuestro espacio en San José, creando momentos de intercambio, discusión y canibalismo intelectual. A otras les hemos topado por ahí en la vida. Algunas son relaciones que se van construyendo en el tiempo; otras son más intensas y efímeras. Los afectos y la afinidad tienen intensidades variables. Muchas de las personas con las quienes construimos proyectos, ideas y procesos terminan siendo amigas.

¿Cómo sostener un colectivo que preserve la dimensión de la singularidad? ¿Cómo crear espacios heterogéneos, con tonalidades propias, atmósferas distintas, en los que cada uno se enganche a su modo? ¿Cómo mantener una disponibilidad que propicie los encuentros, pero que no los imponga, una atención que permita el contacto y preserve

Entrepierne Literal y no tan literalmente, el entrepierne tiene que ver con los cuerpos, con los nuestros y los suyos. Vincularnos más allá de una colaboración, entrepiernarse es acuerparse, quedar ojalá entrelazado con ese cuerpo del otro; por mucho tiempo para crear y avanzar juntas; asumiendo afectivamente las complejidades que eso implica. Este término es una traducción libre, aquella que mejor nos funcionó, al término en inglés ‘entanglement’. Pero evidentemente lo desborda.

Lo weivy ondulante Lo weivy ondulante es lo que lleva un ritmo que tiene sus altos y sus bajos, sus oscilaciones, algunas previsibles y otras menos. No es una línea plana o una línea recta infinita, no sabemos ni siquiera si es una línea, es una energía o una intención que sube y baja, asume o delega.

Horizontalidad

Ondulante / Liderazgo Ondulante Nos gusta pensar el concepto de horizontalidad en relación a cómo nos afectamos entre nosotras y a la manera que escogemos para lidiar con las relaciones de poder. Inicialmente lo aplicamos a la parte organizativa de la institución, hablando de horizontalidad ondulante y de liderazgo ondulante. En nuestro caso la horizontalidad absoluta no nos funciona. La gestión pide un cierto liderazgo. Lo ondulante nos permite el relevo de responsabilidades, pasarse o turnarse el liderazgo, un día ser la líder y al otro día dejarse guiar y apoyar. Lo ondulante permite que hayan momentos más o menos horizontales, según las necesidades del equipo o de los proyectos, sin llegar nunca a convertirse en vertical como sinónimo de autoridad o mando.

Humores ondulantes

Cachimbómetro

Los humores ondulantes los tenemos todas. Días de cabreo, días efusivos, días de tristeza, pedos personales inconfesables, rollos familiares, días más normalitos.

Ninguna está exenta de los fenómenos meteorológicos, de los ciclos lunares o de los efectos de las relaciones personales. Intentamos reconocerlos entre nosotras y asumirlos como parte de la vida; y no como una anomalía o una interrupción al sistema de la productividad. A veces no se puede. Y todo bien.

Dentro del trabajo en colectivo, el ánimo y los humores de cada quien tienen efectos profundos en el grupo. Los momentos de dificultad se hacen más llevaderos cuando se comunican de manera clara y se le hace saber al grupo en dónde se encuentran las energías. El cachimbómetro es nuestra manera de medir cómo está cada una. Sabemos que podemos emplearlo para comunicar que tenemos la cachimba llena; que necesitamos empatía. Esta a veces se traduce en espacio, en silencio, y a veces en escucha o contención; o simplemente en la conciencia del estado de la otra. Nos sirve para medir la energía del grupo preguntando qué marca el cachimbómetro personal de cada cual. Es una de las maneras en las que practicamos el afecto y el cuido hacia los estados emocionales y las vidas personales de cada una.

Lo difícil de los humores es reconocerlos. Los propios y los ajenos. Muchas veces explotamos sin aviso. Unas cuantas fumarolas habrían disipado energías agresivas y dañinas. Un abrazo muchas veces diluye las frustraciones.

Pero ¿cómo reconocemos y comunicamos que nos está pasando algo, aunque no sepamos qué? ¿Cómo sabemos que a la otra le está pasando algo? ¿Cómo sabemos si lo que toca es silencio o conversa? En un intento por crear un sistema de alertas nos inventamos el cachimbómetro.

El cachimbómetro es una idea y no un objeto. Se manifiesta por mensaje de texto, por email, por salidas espontáneas o por donde pueda. Cuando estamos jodidas -fuera de nuestro centro- hablar es complicado. Tener una palabra divertida y específica es tener una llave que nos permite usar el humor para acceder de una manera más fluida a zonas que son difíciles, sensibles, oscuras y poco transitadas.

Hablame claro Decir las cosas como son no siempre sucede.

Damos rodeos.

Guardamos silencios.

Merodeamos elefantes.

Respondemos fuera de tiempo.

Zancadillamos los afectos.

Entre la dicha y el dicho Dicen que del dicho al hecho hay mucho trecho. Pero lo que hay entre la dicha y el dicho es el espacio en el que se edita todo aquello que nos emociona pero nos precariza.

En la dicha, euforia y la ilusión inventamos, armamos, enmancuernamos, conspiramos; es el momento del goce y la imaginación - es decir la posibilidad desbordada.

Luego editamos, apelando a los tiempos, las energías y las posibilidades a nuestro alcance. Es el espacio ambiguo de construir y dejar ir.

A nosotras, nos funciona mejor hablarnos claro.

Nos exigimos hablarnos claro, la una a la otra.

Hablar claro es cuido y es respeto. Hablar claro genera confianza.

Es el único lugar desde el cual creemos que se pueden construir relaciones sanas, profundas y significativas.

Chelines Hay chelines mágicos y chelines nómadas. Y hay chelines tal cual. Los chelines mágicos son los que se estiran mucho a punta de ingenio, gestiones cuidadosas y creatividad para ahorrar en la producción...y se convierten en chelines nómadas, cuando lo que se ahorró en un proyecto lo movemos a otro; ajustando esos pequeños desbalances entre la especulación de los presupuestos y las condiciones reales en las que se desarrollan los proyectos.

Los chelines a fin de cuenta son los recursos financieros.

Trabajar en una institución que cuenta con una estructura financiera y administrativa estable que ha operado por casi veinte años es, hasta cierto punto, un privilegio. Es una condición que no se puede pasar por alto. Contar con salarios regulares hace que la experimentación se haga desde un lugar de relativa tranquilidad. Estamos conscientes de cómo esto afecta la soltura desde la cual se plantean los proyectos.

Tejes y Manejes Trabajamos desde una plataforma de confianza que está configurada de manera tal que hemos podido cuestionar y repensar sus propias estructuras, así como ejecutar ciertos cambios que podrían considerarse riesgosos o kamikaze, como implementar una dirección colectiva. Trabajamos desde un lugar de mucha autonomía, lo cual es sin duda un privilegio. También es un privilegio contar con redes de apoyo, redes de trabajo y redes de pensamiento. Hacer y deshacer bajo estas condiciones dentro de este marco nos da sin duda una contención muy útil para probar, experimentar, equivocarnos y seguir adelante.

Chaordic "Chaordic” o su traducción libre “caórdico”, es un término que recientemente escuchamos de las facilitadoras del “Art of Hosting” de Grecia en la última asamblea de Arts Collaboratory. Se refiere al espacio donde se intersecta el orden y el caos. Es un espacio donde hay un “caos controlado”, o bien un caos que al solo hacerle una buena pregunta se ordena. Simboliza un espacio fértil donde habita la creatividad y la experimentación necesarias para que las transformaciones sean posibles. Es el espacio donde queremos estar para no irnos al caos total, ni quedar en un orden estandarizado que puede llevar a un control que más bien genere un espacio paralizador.

Fracasar mejor Inspirado en una famosa cita de Samuel Beckett, lejos de ser un eslogan que limpia nuestras conciencias si algo sale mal; es más bien la posibilidad o el permiso de que las cosas no salgan como las habíamos previsto. Nos damos la posibilidad de volver a esos ‘fracasos’ como oportunidades

de reflexión, de aprendizaje continuo, de revisión. Es la posibilidad de probar sin miedo.

Más que llegar -¿adónde?- nos interesa encontrar nuevos caminos, caminos más divertidos o más significativos, o más ligeros. Fracasar mejor es darse el chance de encontrar otras maneras.

Ser tuerta Está bien no ver todo. Está bien a veces dar un paso en la oscuridad sin saber cuál va a ser el siguiente. Citando a Diego del Pozo, quien nos introdujo a esta imagen, mediante conversa y dibujos “el tuerto es otra imagen de la imposibilidad de conocer todo sobre lo real y una conciencia de lucha con esa limitación para afirmarse en la necesidad de querer conocer.”

“Es desde esa limitación, desde ese límite desde el que comprendemos la necesidad de ser afectados por lo otro o por los otros, entendemos la necesidad de ser afectados por el exterior como una condición innata a la existencia”.

Banga Banga es hacer “espacio y tiempo”. Es un momento específico de encuentro en el que una organización hace un llamado de ayuda a otras para juntarse a pensar/ estudiar sobre un tema específico. Es un término que hemos adoptado de la red Arts Collaboratory. Nosotras llamamos a un Banga en enero del 2017 para repensar la institución. Cuando decimos institución nos referimos a los modos y las formas de hacer, a la estructura organizativa, a las prácticas y relaciones internas, y a nuestras maneras de vincularnos con el ecosistema.

Estudio CITANDO A MARINA GARCÉS:

"No toda escuela es una escuela ni todos los estudios del mercado nos permiten estudiar. ha sido aún codificado”. Para nosotras, el estudio es una manera de estar juntas para aprender, investigar y explorar inquietudes. Nuestro proceso de gestión autocrítica es una manera de hacer estudio desde la institución. Quizás es el proyecto al que dedicamos más tiempo.

Alter Alter viene de Alter Academia. La idea de Alter va más allá del proyecto y se ha convertido en una respuesta a lo que no es, lo que aún no está o hay que inventarse, lo que podría ser o el deseo de algo diferente, buscando formas para atender vacíos, necesidades e inquietudes.

A los Alters, que son cuatro cada año, les damos las llaves de la institución para que vayan y vengan a su antojo y no dependan de nosotras para hacer uso del espacio.

Compartir las llaves de nuestro espacio con terceros es una estrategia para desencajar la operación regular de la institución a partir de una práctica más directa de los comunes. Este gesto de apertura y confianza absoluta, tanto simbólico como práctico, detona un vínculo que permite habitar el espacio como propio.

Y en este caso habitamos también una institución, y al habitarla la construimos. La institución sin las personas que la habitamos con nuestras presencias y nuestras decisiones cotidianas es tan solo un cascarón, un potencial.

Las instituciones por sí mismas no existen.

La TEOR/éTica de hoy somos las personas que la afectamos en su devenir, en su día a día y en su constitución. Somos el equipo de trabajo; son los interlocutores que están de paso, en estancias más o menos largas ligadas a proyectos; son los usuarios que visitan y usan el espacio; son los alter académicos, los de este año y los de los años anteriores, y son las personas que estuvieron en el equipo y que siguen vinculadas. TEOR/éTica ha sido habitada, y por lo tanto constantemente construida y reconstruida, por muchas personas y grupos de personas… cada quien, cada grupo, permeándola de sus intereses. TEOR/éTica es una institución felizmente porosa.

UPE!

Agenciamiento

En Costa Rica es una interjección que se utiliza para tocar la puerta o para llamar la atención y entrar en un grupo o conversación. Para nosotras ¡UPE! es el vehículo por medio del cual adquirimos conciencia y nos reconocemos como parte del tejido espacial y social en el que estamos ubicadas geográficamente: Barrio Amón. Así que nos permitimos interactuar -sobre todo escuchar- para atender nuestra incidencia en el espacio público desde la particularidad de nuestro espacio, que en tanto privado, no es de uso particular. Tiene una vocación, y una responsabilidad, públicas.

El término agenciamiento, lo define muy bien el proyecto Subtramas de España:

“Palabra derivada del verbo latino ago, agis, agere, que significa hacer, actuar. El agenciamiento se traduce en la capacidad del sujeto para generar espacios críticos no hegemónicos de enunciación del yo, en y desde lo colectivo, para contrarrestar las lógicas de control que se le imponen. De este modo, el agenciamiento desafía la hegemonía de lo normativo, homogéneo y fijo para hacer funcionar distintos nodos/agentes que se relacionen entre sí y hacia afuera”.

TEOR/éTica es un espacio cultural que busca, a partir de sus proyectos y sus alianzas, incidir políticamente en el contexto. Tiene que ver con hacer, pero también con procurar ser una plataforma que pueda acompañar y potenciar proyectos de otros que nos interpelan desde su contenido y su forma.

o es habitual, en el ámbito de la cultura, encontrarte con personas que se pirren por conocer a fondo las políticas culturales de su entorno y los marcos jurídicos que las amparan, para intentar comprender las complejas estructuras sociales, políticas y económicas que las impulsan. Pero este sí es mi caso.

En mi labor como coordinadora en Pedagogías Invisibles y miembro del Grupo de Educación de Matadero Madrid (hasta su fin de residencia en el 2018), he intentado cuestionarme e investigar sobre la institución cultural como lugar de producción de conocimiento crítico y emancipado. A continuación, os comparto una serie de reflexiones que atienden a una pregunta que ronda mi cabeza desde hace tiempo. En un contexto en el que la institución cultural se despolitiza, en la medida en que se pone al servicio de lógicas de acumulación y de la reproducción de relatos hegemónicos; ¿cómo podemos hacer que éstas empiecen a entenderse a sí mismas como agentes políticos de transformación social?

cultural, se pone al servicio de premisas propias de una mercadotecnia neoliberal a través de políticas culturales que promueven líneas de acción basadas en estándares de eficiencia cuantitativos y no cualitativos.

Nos referimos a políticas que no amparan procesos que se ubican fuera de las lógicas de producción y acumulación y que miden sus éxitos y fracasos basándose en el número de visitantes o la cantidad de actividades programadas, en vez de centrarse en el impacto social que éstas producen o la transformación que tienen en su entorno.

Como efecto inmediato de esta cuestión está el hecho de que la institución cultural comienza a gestionarse como si de un patrimonio privado se tratase. Nos encontramos con instituciones culturales y museísticas que han olvidado que la responsabilidad no la tienen con el interior del

La institución cultural, como espacio en el que se articula la generación de cultura, debe tener una función de representación de la sociedad, como lugar de relación y construcción de tejido social que es. Si esta premisa no está clara a la hora de esbozar las políticas culturales que le van a servir de marco de acción, tendremos instituciones autorreferenciales, interesadas en desplegar un discurso propio y no en generar nuevas capas de conocimiento y pensamiento crítico en torno a temas de relevancia social.

EL MUSEO ES UNA FÁBRICA Si la cultura es un recurso, el museo es la fábrica en la que se produce. La institución cultural contemporánea se ha convertido en una suerte de fábrica post-fordista: planificación, instalación, carpintería, mantenimiento, visitas, más visitas, exposiciones temporales, transporte

de obra, seguros, construcción, residuos… El concepto “producción” está en el centro de toda la actividad del Museo. La programación se cierra como mínimo a dos años vista; no hay tiempo para la reflexión, no existe el espacio necesario para pararnos y pensar cuál es el verdadero sentido de lo que hacemos. La gigantesca bola del capital empieza a rodar y es imposible pararla.

Los ritmos frenéticos no permiten las construcciones críticas de conocimiento, no hay tiempo para poner en cuestión las políticas culturales por las que nos estamos rigiendo.

Esta cuestión se hace especialmente alarmante si tenemos en cuenta que, como mencionábamos antes, el Museo es un lugar de legitimación de relatos poder. Este poder se desenvuelve a través de innumerables elementos cotidianos que ejercen una violencia simbólica sobre el visitante, pero que no son percibidos por esa noción de cotidianeidad a la que aludíamos, pero que modifican profundamente nuestra experiencia: catenarias que guían, carteles que demandan silencio, audioguías que imponen un discurso y mediadoras que reproducen las narrativas preestablecidas porque no se les ha dado el lugar de relevancia que merecen como para generar discursos propios y remover conciencias para que otros también lo hagan. Todos estos elementos de control cumplen una doble función: por una parte, posibilitan que los estándares de eficiencia cuantitativos del Museo crezcan de manera exponencial (ya se sabe, cuanto mejor ordenado, más cabe) y, por otra parte, impiden una generación crítica y emancipada de conocimiento.

¿Cómo es posible que en la institución de generación de conocimiento por excelencia (además de la escuela), haya tantos dispositivos que impidan generarlo? ¿Cómo es posible que en la institución de generación de conocimiento por excelencia (además de la escuela), haya tantos dispositivos que impidan generarlo? Lo cierto es que el desinterés por parte de la institución cultural por proponer dispositivos de participación activa pone de manifiesto que la vocación de estos no es la producción de conocimiento y que su misión no es contribuir a fortalecer el tejido cultural de su contexto. El Museo es un lugar de reproducción de narrativas de poder que se sirve de lógicas productivistas para caer en dinámicas frenéticas que lo despolitizan y lo asimilan a una fábrica.

CONFLICTO CAPITAL VIDA Para poder generar una contra-narrativa en torno a estas cuestiones es preciso ubicarnos de manera crítica frente al conflicto capital-vida.

Para entender todo esto fue crucial el momento en el que el libro Subversión feminista de la economía1 de Amaia Pérez Orozco, llega a mis manos. Era la época en la que comenzaba a cuestionarme a cerca del potencial de

las instituciones culturales como agentes políticos de transformación social, y este libro me puso el foco en el lugar adecuado: el conflicto que existe entre las lógicas que atienden al capital y las que atienden a la vida.

Parte de la premisa de que, tal y como afirma la ecofeminista Yayo Herrero, vivimos en un sistema biocida en el que el lugar central lo ocupa el capital, movido por sus lógicas de acumulación, mientras que la vida se resuelve en espacios periféricos, invisibilizados, domésticos y habitualmente feminizados2.

El efecto más inmediato de esta cuestión es que las personas acabamos teniendo la posibilidad de una representatividad socio-política, en tanto en cuanto somos productivas para el sistema en términos de actividad monetizable. Es decir, las lógicas mercantilistas y de producción se ponen en el centro mientras que los lugares en los que se sostiene y cuida la vida quedan relegados a esferas invisibilizadas y despolitizadas.

Esto es un efecto directamente relacionado con el hecho de situar las políticas mercantiles en el centro; todo lo que no puede medirse con la vara del dinero, como es el caso de los cuidados, queda fuera de cualquier participación política. como ejercicio de poder de esos cuerpos que cuidan, que no producen cosas sino bienestar, y que procuran una vida que merece ser vivida. Es importante entender que esa idea de cuerpo no está asociado en todos los casos a una situación permanente. En algunos casos, hay que entenderlo más bien como un acto de cuidado, y reflexionar sobre la representatividad socio-política que ello tiene.

De esta manera, los sujetos y las acciones que se ubican en esos espacios no cuentan con canales de acceso para poder ejercer un poder económico y social pleno, lo que a su vez conlleva que no puedan constituirse en sujetos políticos capaces de ofrecer una resistencia a los procesos de acumulación.

Por su parte, las instituciones se articulan como portadoras y reproductoras de estos mismos procesos de invisibilización. Esto resulta especialmente alarmante en las instituciones culturales, que deben ser espacios de creación de conocimiento y pensamiento crítico pero que, sin embargo, son meras reproductoras de discursos hegemónicos, fruto de la despolitización de las mismas.

En este sentido, cabe recalcar que esta cuestión se vuelve especialmente alarmante si entendemos que, como dice Paul B. Preciado, el museo es un aparato performativo, que produce tanto al objeto como al sujeto que dice representar.

Este hecho se convierte en la principal potencialidad del museo: adjudicar un valor de verdad histórica o estética universal y compartida a las cuestiones y objetos que se exponen en el mismo3. Dejar de reproducir y desarticular este relato de poder hegemónico debe de ser, desde ya, el objetivo fundamental de las instituciones culturales.

Por ello, es precisamente en esos lugares donde debemos generar esas contra-narrativas a los relatos de poder, poniendo nuestro foco de acción en el conflicto capital–vida para que las instituciones de creación de conocimiento empiecen a entenderse a sí mismas como agentes políticos de transformación social.

DE LA INSTITUCIÓN COMO COSA A LA INSTITUCIÓN COMO VÍNCULO Hace unos días, una buena amiga me envió el siguiente chiste, que ejemplifica de manera sarcástica y muy directa el momento que atravesamos. Decía así: - Si eres pobre, viajas en Uber, compras por Amazon y votas a la derecha, es que eres imbécil.

- Pero señor (Walter) Benjamin, no podemos poner eso.

- Ok, entonces pon: “La autoaliención de la humanidad ha alcanzado un grado tal, que le permite vivir su propia destrucción como un goce estético”.

Seguir apostando por políticas culturales que engrosen los modelos de acumulación es una negligencia, es necesario cambiar de modelo de gestión y centrarnos en que las instituciones culturales dejen de poner sus esfuerzos en la atracción del turismo o en la producción de una imagen nacional y poner el foco en el objetivo real de las mismas, la producción de cultura. cual rapiñar, desplazar, desarraigar y explotar al máximo son el proyecto de la acumulación (…) es crucialmente instrumental reducir la empatía humana y entrenar a las personas para que consigan ejecutar, tolerar y convivir con actos de crueldad cotidianos”.4 Se refiere a las pedagogías de la crueldad5, aquellos actos y prácticas que enseñan, habitúan y programan a los sujetos a transmutar lo vivo y su vitalidad en cosas. Dicho de otra manera, son las pedagogías que nos anestesian ante las injusticias sociales y nos hacen bascular de manera naturalizada hacia lógicas propias del capital, mientras que dejamos de lado las que amparan la vida.

Las instituciones culturales son portadoras y reproductoras de estos órdenes sociales, por lo que es urgente plantearse, a cada paso que damos, cuál es el fin último de las propuestas y programas que desarrollamos. Es preciso que la cultura se desembarace de todos los

procesos de capitalización que se le han ido solapando para repensarse como bien común y no como recurso.

Seguir apostando por políticas culturales que engrosen los modelos de acumulación es una negligencia, es necesario cambiar de modelo de gestión y centrarnos en que las instituciones culturales dejen de poner sus esfuerzos en la atracción del turismo o en la producción de una imagen nacional y poner el foco en el objetivo real de las mismas, la producción de cultura.

Sólo así podremos transitar de políticas culturales que ponen el foco en los procesos de acumulación que capitalizan y cosifican nuestras relaciones, a dinámicas que pongan en el centro la vida y el valor de entendernos como seres interdependientes.

No nos queda mucho tiempo. Las oportunidades de construir un proyecto de humanidad que ponga la justicia social en el centro son cada vez menos y la manera de hacerlo es decrecer y, como dice Segato, pasar del proyecto histórico de las cosas, al proyecto histórico de los vínculos.6

o no sabía que había fracasado hasta que me pidieron que escribiera en esta sección.

-¿Qué significa fracasar? - le pregunté al muchacho en ropa de hospital que estudiaba efervescentemente sentado a la par mía en la cafetería de cadena americana. No sin antes verme como si yo estuviera loca, me dijo que fracasar era -“...no aprender nada”-. No le respondí nada y seguí con lo mío, no me lo esperaba. Creo que fracasar es tener una meta, tan clara que se puede dibujar al estilo más realista, saber cómo aprender a dibujar, no lograr esa imagen y no haber aprendido a dibujar.

El proyecto de ¡UPE! comienza como una experimentación, no solamente porque parte de una pregunta de la que genuinamente no se sabe la respuesta, si no también porque la forma en la que se iba a contestar no había sido explorada ni por TEOR/éTica ni por Semillas. O sea, la meta nunca estuvo clara, y ahí empezamos el camino condenado y tortuoso al fracaso.

Dicen que lo que no se nombra no existe. Somos un fracaso, ¡que placer me dan estas palabras! Ahora que sé que fracasamos, entonces puedo explicar cómo hacerlo de la mejor forma posible. Algunas herramientas nos sirvieron, otras no tanto.

ENTONCES, ESTE ES EL PASO A PASO PARA FRACASAR: 1. Comparta su espacio de trabajo, sus recursos y su conocimiento. Deje que los demás entren y conozcan.

6. Siga conversando sobre sus preguntas, grabe los diálogos y póngalos al alcance de todos y todas.

2. Pregúntese lo que importa: ¿quién le da permiso a los que dan permiso?

7. Un día llega una sorpresa a su puerta, una pregunta que ni usted ni nadie está haciendo.

Siga sin dar respuestas, porque fracasar es aprender otras formas, hacerse otras preguntas y tener más posibilidades.

3. Reúnase con vecinos, académicos, gestores, emprendedores, artistas, arquitectos, historiadores, antropólogos… Hágales las mismas preguntas. Salga a la calle y pregúntele a los de la calle también.

4. Quédese con las preguntas, escríbalas en una pizarra, también en un papel y llévelo consigo a su casa, al trabajo, al bar, al gimnasio, celebrelas y, si alguien le pregunta qué tanto ha estado haciendo, dígale que no sabe las respuestas.

5. Repita por un año entero.

8. Repita por varios meses.

9. Si se da cuenta de que llegó a una pregunta que nadie quiere hacer, no la deje ir. Después, haga una lista sobre cómo fracasar de la mejor forma posible y no deje de trabajar.

Supongo que para fracasar hay que establecer metas tan exactas que el camino se ilumina claramente, pero para fracasar mejor hay que apagar todas las luces, caminar a ciegas y caerse en todos los huecos posibles.

Pero, ¿qué pasa si apagamos las luces a propósito? Lo hicimos porque el camino que podíamos seguir parecía tan claro que merecía sospecha, lo pusimos todo en duda y caminamos lento por varios meses, porque el Barrio Amón ya se veía tan claro que a nosotras nos parecía falso.

Entonces, fracasar es eso que tanto nos da miedo porque nos obliga a tomarnos el tiempo de poner en duda todo y todos, a descubrir verdades y voces nuevas o voces que en realidad siempre han estado ahí pero que no aparecen en los libros, ni en las exposiciones y mucho menos en las actividades culturales masivas.

Y esa es la clave, el tiempo, lo que tanto nos duele perder, lo que tanto nos cuesta invertir y lo que parece ser lo más importante en la vida. Parece que fracasar es, entonces, perder el tiempo.

UPE En el 2019, ¡UPE! se une a (re)habitar, proyecto de extensión e investigación de la Escuela de Arquitectura del TEC que plantea la apertura de espacios de discusión en torno a las complejidades, retos y dinámicas asociadas al (re)habitar la ciudad, específicamente los Barrios Amón y Otoya; para colaborar en una publicación que recopilará el trabajo procesual de ¡UPE! del 2017 al 2019.

NEGOCIACIONES FRONTERIZAS Notas sobre un viaje realizado entre el 19 de junio y el 3 de julio del 2018 a Jerusalén, Palestina (Cisjordania) y Amman, Jordania; que quieren narrar una serie de experiencias que transitan entre fronteras geopolíticas, mentales, emocionales, individuales, colectivas, religiosas, idiomáticas, identitarias y artísticas. n el 2018, por cuarta vez consecutiva, tuve la oportunidad de asistir a la asamblea anual de Arts Collaboratory (AC en adelante). Los anfitriones de esta asamblea fueron las organizaciones: Ashkal Alwan (Beirut, Líbano); Al Ma’mal (Jerusalén Este, Palestina) y Riwaq (Ramallah, Palestina). La idea de hacer este encuentro en Medio Oriente llevaba años de estar sobre la mesa. En el año 2016, la asamblea se pensó hacer en

Líbano, pero dado que fue imposible que los miembros de organizaciones palestinas pudieran ser admitidos en ese país; el evento fue trasladado a otra locación. Así que para el 2018 la propuesta fue esta: la mitad de los miembros de la red viajarían a Líbano, la otra mitad a Palestina y al final todos nos encontraríamos en Jordania, un territorio, por llamarlo de alguna manera, neutral para los palestinos.

Yo escogí la combinación Palestina y Jordania.

de los días venideros. Aline se desvió para mostrarme un campo de refugiados, la Universidad Hebrea de Jerusalén y la vista de esta ciudad desde el Monte de los Olivos.

Llegamos a la puerta de Jaffa, en el perímetro de la antigua ciudad amurallada de Jerusalén, ahí nos esperaban unas chicas de Al Ma’mal, la fundación privada dedicada al arte contemporáneo a la cual pertenece Aline, y recibieron las frutas. Aline y yo dimos una vuelta grande para dejar el carro en un parqueo y entrar por la Puerta Nueva, otra de las entradas a la ciudad vieja de Jerusalén, totalmente gentrificada y llena de atracciones turísticas. Ese día recuerdo haber estado en Al Ma’mal, conocer su historia, salir a comer falafel con Aline, toparnos con muchos chicos judíos ortodoxos. Recuerdo en especial a uno que me miró y al instante se latigó el rostro contra el viento para evitar la correspondencia de mi mirada. Esa noche me acosté temprano y a las 3:00 am fui despertada por los cánticos musulmanes que de inmediato se convirtieron en la banda sonora de un jetlag ingrato que me mantuvo en vela durante toda esa fresca madrugada.

INTERVENCIÓN DE BANKSY EN EL LADO PALESTINO DEL MURO EN BELÉN.

Llegué el 20 de junio, 2018 a Tel Aviv tarde en la noche, después de 21 horas de viaje. Aline me recogió en el Aeropuerto Ben Gurion y condujo su automóvil por más de una hora hasta su casa en Jerusalén Este. Al otro día desayuné con Aline y su mamá. Me sirvieron pan hecho en casa, zatta, aceite de oliva, pepinos, sandía y café instantáneo. Salimos a comprar frutas para los refrigerios

La Asamblea oficialmente empezaba el 23 de junio. Así que aún tenía un día para ajustar mis horarios y conocer un poco de la antigua ciudad de Jerusalén. Me instalé en el hotel ubicado dentro de la ciudad antigua. Después salí a caminar sola guiándome por el perímetro que marcan las antiguas murallas de esta ciudad. De la puerta de Jaffa, caí al Barrio Armenio y salí por la puerta de Zion siguiendo un rótulo que indicaba donde fue la última cena y la tumba de David; además de la iglesia erigida en el sitio donde se dice murió María. Entré de nuevo por la puerta de Zion para

Cristiano, entré a la Iglesia del Santo Sepulcro, vi mucha gente adorando y tirándose en la laja de piedra donde se indica la tumba de Jesucristo y llorar. Después, me llamó la atención una tienda donde era posible hacerse retratos con fondos de pasajes bíblicos. Esto terminó de transmitirme la sensación de haber estado caminando por distintos relatos, como si estuviera dentro de un parque temático de las religiones monoteístas de nuestra civilización.

DAOUD Y KHALDUN CONVERSANDO SOBRE LA HISTORIA DE LA CIUDAD ANTIGUA DE JERUSALÉN.

Los días transcurrirían entre visitas a esas ciudades, centros de arte y reuniones que serían facilitadas por Maria y Eirini, dos griegas parte de la organización “Art of Hosting” o “Arte del Liderazgo Participativo”, que nos asistirían en nuestros procesos conversacionales para ayudarnos a abordar los temas fáciles y los difíciles con la intención de enfrentarlos y llegar a acuerdos.

caer en el Barrio Judío, por casualidad encontré el Muro de los Lamentos. Ahí me pidieron cubrirme los hombros.

Quise acercarme al muro y sin saberlo empecé a bajar por el lado de los hombres, pero pronto tres de ellos me corrigieron y me fui para el otro lado. Ahí fue cuando noté que en este muro hay un lado para hombres y otro para mujeres; y que el de las mujeres es más pequeño que el de los hombres. De ahí pasé al Barrio Musulmán, me fue imposible ir al Domo de la Roca, por razones de seguridad solo se puede visitar a ciertas horas. Luego pasé al Barrio

En el primer día de la asamblea, conocimos a Daoud, miembro de otra organización de arte palestina, quien se ofreció a darnos un tour de la vieja ciudad por medio de una caminata conversada. Su primera pregunta resuena aún en mi cabeza. “¿De cuál Jerusalén estamos hablando?

Porque cada piedra de esta ciudad tiene su propia historia”, dijo desafiante. Daoud nos habló de las complejidades geopolíticas, usó algunas frases como: el rompecabezas de Jerusalén; una catástrofe continua; ocupar los territorios es un negocio; resolver el problema judío en Europa; el rey David es una leyenda; ¿quién controla la tierra? Dejó claro que quien está en el poder puede apropiarse de un territorio a través de la narrativa que construye sobre este. Con Daoud volví a recorrer los distintos barrios,

hacer conflicto entre las religiones; una estrategia que funciona; el problema es de territorio y control, no de religiones; antes la ciudad no estaba dividida, no habían bordes ni fronteras fijas; la paz es la construcción de un mosaico como símbolo de todos viviendo juntos, nuestra lucha es por recuperar esa memoria.

DAOUD GUIANDO LA CAMINATA POR LA CIUDAD ANTIGUA DE JERUSALÉN.

Con Daoud también visitamos un hoash, palabra que en árabe significa patio. Es un tipo de organización residencial antigua en la cual cada familia comparte un cuarto y todos estos cuartos dan a un patio central.

Lo que Daoud nos quería mostrar es cómo funciona la ocupación israelí. La estrategia es empezar a fragmentar estas residencias, poniendo a un colono israelí en una de estas habitaciones; además, estos ocupantes son cambiados con regularidad, lo cual hace que sus aposentos estén descuidados con respecto a los de las familias palestinas. También hay un cargado sistema de seguridad por medio de cámaras de vigilancia que inhibe la vida de los habitantes locales.

En un documental realizado por Issa Freij en el año 2006 llamado Last Supper (Abu Dis) o “Última cena (Abu Dis)” se narra la experiencia de unos habitantes palestinos del pueblo de Abu Dis, ubicado en las afueras de Jerusalén, mientras sus casas están siendo cercadas por el muro construido por el gobierno israelí, bajo supuestas medidas de seguridad. El filme expone claramente la violación a los derechos humanos y las estrategias de fragmentación, colonización y sometimiento del gobierno israelí sobre los habitantes palestinos.

pasar a ciertas áreas de los territorios agrupados bajo el nombre de Cisjordania. Fue comprender que esto separa físicamente familias enteras, pero sobretodo socava la organicidad de lo que llamamos construir comunidad, mina la posibilidad de reunión, y por lo tanto funciona para debilitar y dominar.

GRAFFITIS EN EL CENTRO DE HEBRÓN.

TIENDAS PALESTINAS CLAUSURADAS EN EL CENTRO DE HEBRÓN.

Visitar Cisjordania o el “West Bank” fue pasar por puestos militares que en rótulos grandes y rojos advierten que uno se está adentrando en el lado palestino. Fue además experimentar que los soldados israelíes subieran a nuestra microbús a revisar con detallado escrutinio los pasaportes de cada uno de nosotros. También enterarse de que algunos palestinos, dependiendo de su identificación (hay 4 categorías), no pueden entrar a Jerusalén o necesitan permisos especiales para hacerlo; o que incluso no pueden

Hebrón, ubicada a tan solo 35 km al sur de Jerusalén, es la segunda ciudad más grande de Cisjordania, donde se presume está la tumba de Abraham, razón por la cual es tierra sagrada tanto para la religión musulmana como la cristiana y la judía. Actualmente, después de haber sido un importante centro económico, social y cultural, se le conoce más como una ciudad fantasma por el impacto negativo de la ocupación y sus políticas de separación o segregación, que violan los derechos humanos de miles de palestinos para proteger a los ocupantes israelíes de esta ciudad y sus alrededores. Este sistema de separación que se ha instalado en Hebrón, ha forzado a muchos palestinos a abandonar sus propios hogares.

Visitamos el espacio que alberga a la organización, YAS (Youth Against Settlements). Para llegar ahí, tuvimos que sortear el puesto militar de la calle Shuhada que dos de nuestros anfitriones palestinos no pudieron pasar. Lo atravesamos con el pesar de verlos al otro lado de las rejas y nos adentramos en unas calles vacías y polvorientas para llegar a otro puesto militar en el que, después de muchas preguntas, seguir adelante nos fue prohibido.

Aún así, nuestros anfitriones palestinos nos enseñaron que cuando ellos topan con barrera, se detienen solo para pensar de qué otra manera pueden llegar adonde

quieren. Así fue como dimos la vuelta y empezamos a subir unas colinas secas y polvorientas que se sostienen al sol llenas de olivos centenarios. Llegamos a la sede de YAS, un grupo de activistas no violentos que buscan poner fin a la construcción y expansión de los asentamientos ilegales israelíes mediante la lucha popular no violenta y la resistencia civil.

YAS (YOUTH AGAINST SETTLEMENTS), HEBRÓN.

Tanto Murad Amer como Muhanad Qafisheh nos narraron sus experiencias personales y de cómo, para proteger a los colonos ilegales, el estado israelí impone de manera sistemática un régimen de desalojos forzosos, toques de queda, cierres de calles y mercados, puestos de control militares, frecuentes búsquedas aleatorias, detenciones sin cargos y se hace de la vista gorda ante la violencia desenfrenada de los colonos contra los palestinos.

Al salir de YAS, pasamos por nuestros amigos que nos esperaban al otro lado del puesto militar y caminamos hasta Hebron Rehabilitation Committee, que se han dedicado a revitalizar la vida de la antigua ciudad de Hebrón, renovando edificios históricos, así como incentivando a que los palestinos regresen a vivir a ella. Hasta la fecha han restaurado alrededor de 1300 apartamentos y han logrado que casi 7000 personas regresen a la antigua ciudad de Hebrón. No solo se dedican a renovar antiguos edificios, también a rehabilitar la infraestructura de la ciudad: calles, escuelas y otros servicios; así como asistir a través de un departamento legal que atiende y documenta las violaciones del estado israelí sobre la población palestina.

De Hebrón fuimos hasta la ciudad de Dahriyehh. Al salir de la Municipalidad de esta ciudad, reconocí algo que ya

había visto en el Mercado de Artesanías de Hebrón. Era una placa de cerámica que imita la tradicional palestina que dice tanto en árabe como en inglés “Jerusalén” e indica la distancia en kilómetros de donde está colocada a la ciudad de Jerusalén. Pregunté qué era y así conocí esta obra del artista palestino Khaled Houran titulada Ramallah: The

Road to Jerusalem del año 2009 o en español, Ramallah: El camino a Jerusalén. Khaled ha instalado esta placa por distintos puntos de los territorios palestinos en ocupación; tanto para señalar la distancia física a un territorio al cual no todos los palestinos pueden llegar (Jerusalén); siendo la mayor parte de las veces un guiño que alude menos a la distancia física real (porque a veces es irrisoria) y más una metáfora a la gran distancia con lo racional y humano de las políticas de exclusión y los desafíos coloniales e imperiales neoliberales impuestos por la ocupación israelí en Jerusalén y sus habitantes palestinos.

¿Cómo y para qué funcionan las redes? Nos reunimos en el centro de arte Al Hoash para conversar de esto. Tanto ellos como Al Ma’mal son parte de la Red de Arte de Jerusalén “SHAFAQ”, quienes organizan en conjunto una serie de eventos cuya finalidad es reactivar la cooperación y apoyar la vida y la resiliencia palestina en Jerusalén.

RAMALLAH, THE ROAD TO JERUSALEM, DEL ARTISTA PALESTINO KHALED HOURAN EN LA MUNICIPALIDAD DE DAHRIYEHH.

Las reflexiones a lo interno de AC giraron alrededor de estas preguntas: ¿qué significa tener una red de apoyo?, ¿cuál es nuestra visión o propósito común?, ¿hacia dónde vamos como red? Las frases más significativas que me quedaron de esa reunión: en red es más factible enfrentar los retos; en vez de ser uno, ser un movimiento; las redes crean presencia y unidad, lo contrario a la fragmentación y la invisibilización; reunirse en reconocimiento de necesitar al otro.

El 26 de junio dejamos nuestro hotel en la ciudad antigua de Jerusalén y salimos hacia Ramallah. Es la ciudad que alberga a Riwaq, quienes se han dedicado por los últimos 28 años a preservar la memoria colectiva palestina a través de proyectos que documentan y restauran sitios del patrimonio arquitectónico en Cisjordania y Gaza. Es un equipo conformado en su mayoría por arquitectos expertos en restauración y paisajismo que emprenden un trabajo en conjunto con las comunidades para recuperar su memoria y reclamar de alguna manera su existencia y permanencia en estos territorios. Ramallah es parte del “Territorio A”, esto es, una zona que aunque está bajo control palestino está bajo ocupación militar de Israel, quienes en cualquier momento podrían intervenir. Ramallah es la capital de facto de Palestina y sede del gobierno provisional de la ANP (Autoridad Nacional Palestina) que reclama una Palestina independiente y que Jerusalén Este sea su capital -actualmente anexada y proclamada como parte de la capital israelí.

Conocer a Yazan Khalili, director de Khalil Sakakini Cultural Centre fue una de las experiencias más estimulantes. El centro atraviesa un momento de reflexión y ensayo de un modelo de gestión que pretende revitalizar sus actividades no solo repensando su programación y audiencia, sino mediante ensayos de formas de producción y gestión más colaborativas y sostenibles que implican el involucramiento del centro con la comunidad y viceversa, para aspirar a construir una estructura basada en la solidaridad.

La última parada de ese día fue en PYALARA (Palestinian Youth Association for Leadership and Rights Activation), una asociación que trabaja con jóvenes palestinos de los 13 a los 25 años para fortalecer sus capacidades de

liderazgo y apoyarlos a desarrollar proyectos desde sus propias necesidades y derechos que les den herramientas tanto para adaptarse a la situación de su contexto como para darles confianza y la esperanza de llegar a construir una sociedad democrática.

Hoy busqué un asiento individual en la microbús para perder mi mirada en el paisaje árido y desértico de camino a Qalandiya y pensar para qué estaba viendo estas realidades.

Me sentía profundamente triste y de repente identifiqué en mi propia vida personal otros tipos de violencia, indiferencia y fragmentación. Por ejemplo pensé en mi propio núcleo familiar, en la imposibilidad de comunicación de mis padres, de las negociaciones en mi juventud para defender mi movilidad del territorio materno al territorio paterno y viceversa. Me pregunté: ¿dónde empieza la violencia?, ¿la fragmentación?, ¿la indiferencia por el otro?

CAMINO DE LA FRONTERA DE JORDANIA A JERUSALÉN ESTE.

El último día en Ramallah fue el 28 de junio, fuimos a Birzeit directamente al Museo de Palestina, después de ver la exposición temporal del momento, tuvimos una larga sesión de trabajo facilitada por nuestras compañeras del Art of Hosting. Fue una nutritiva conversación que reflexionó alrededor de entendernos como sistemas vivos y no máquinas separadas y de la importancia de crear espacios para escuchar y conversar con intención.

De todo lo conversado, lo que más caló en mí fue la posibilidad de aprender a estar en ese espacio entre saber y no saber, un espacio entre el caos y el orden que es justo el lugar propicio para la creatividad. La metáfora es que los sistemas ubicados totalmente del lado del orden llevan a la muerte, como el sistema de ocupación y control israelí sobre los territorios palestinos; y de igual manera del otro lado del espectro, el caos completo, también es equivalente a la muerte. ¿Cómo situarse en ese cruce entre el caos y el orden donde hay un marco o una base

que sostiene y permite generar las condiciones para que de un poco de desorden surja la creatividad, la renovación y la transformación? La paradoja siempre está presente, el arte emerge en esta tensión.

La última parada antes de dejar Ramallah, fue ir a la inauguración de la A. M. Qattan Foundation y mi encuentro con The Pomegranate de la artista palestina Jumana Emil Abboud. Traduzco libremente algunas partes de la ficha técnica de The Pomegranate (La granada) (2005):

en el hecho de que existen fuera de su piel (nido, hogar, naturaleza), sino en la esperanza de un retorno perfecto y en el peligro de una colocación irregular…”.

GRAFFITI EN EL LADO PALESTINO DEL MURO EN BELÉN.

“...las manos de la artista... meticulosamente intentan devolver las semillas de la granada,..., de vuelta a la membrana interna de la granada….este simple acto cuestiona el significado de devolver algo para restablecer el equilibrio, aunque se sabe la imposibilidad de tal tarea y/o sueño. El acto de tratar de encajar las semillas donde supuestamente pertenecen se convierte en un acto de caos. Es ritualista y obsesivo..., la semilla no siempre encaja perfectamente...Las semillas están desplazadas; su desplazamiento no solo se encuentra

Tomamos un autobús hasta el puente Allenby para cruzar a Amman, Jordania. En ese momento, nuestros anfitriones palestinos Aline, Carol, Shata y Khaldun, habían tomado dos direcciones diferentes para cruzar desde diferentes puntos, según lo requerido por el estado israelí de acuerdo a las identificaciones de cada uno de ellos. La única anfitriona palestina que estuvo con nosotros durante este cruce fronterizo fue Renad. Ella nos guió con gracia de un lado a otro, acatando todos los requisitos de seguridad y otras transacciones burocráticas. Fue evidente de que, a pesar de estar pasando distintos puestos militares tanto palestinos como jordanos, en realidad toda la operación está controlada por el gobierno israelí. Con esto quiero decir que reina un aire de intimidación y sospecha a la diferencia. Además, aunque parezca impensable en el siglo XXI, hay tanto pasos como buses exclusivos para palestinos, lo cual solo tiene un nombre: segregación.

En Amman finalmente estábamos la asamblea en pleno, casi como dos ríos que llegan al mar, los que fuimos a Palestina y los que fueron a Líbano, cada uno con una experiencia previa bastante distinta, ahora mezclándonos en efusivos saludos. El afecto es parte importante de la columna vertebral que sostiene la red de AC. Los tres días del encuentro en Amman fuimos acogidos por Darat al Funun, una organización privada sin fines de

lucro dedicada a la exposición e investigación del arte contemporáneo. Estos tres días las sesiones de trabajo fueron al grano en búsqueda de acordar entre todos una serie de decisiones que nos dieran claridad con respecto a grupos de trabajo que seguirían vigentes más otra serie de decisiones de nuestra administración y comunicación interna. Además, después de varias sesiones siguiendo metodologías participativas, la asamblea de AC definió así su visión: “El propósito de Arts Collaboratory es reimaginar y generar formas de vida tanto a nivel local como global a través de prácticas artísticas colectivas”.

Lo último que quiero mencionar es el regreso a casa.

Empiezo por la ingenuidad de no haber entendido la sugerencia de mis anfitriones de regresar a mi país saliendo de Jordania. En mi cerebro práctico, la matemática fue: es más fácil y más barato comprar un tiquete de ida y vuelta entre dos lugares: San José - Tel Aviv. Pero mi cerebro no había captado bien para dónde iba. Estas realidades nos pueden llegar a ser tan ajenas que ni siquiera las podemos dimensionar. Haber vivido en carne propia, de la manera más leve e indolora y por unos pocos minutos, procesos de interrogación y escrutinio amedrentadores por el simple hecho de ser sospechosa de haber estado con los “otros”, sin querer sonar muy conocedora, me ha dado una percepción un poco más redonda del mundo en el que cohabitamos.

Al regresar a Costa Rica después de estas experiencias de viaje escribí cada uno de los diálogos de los interrogatorios que me hicieron los oficiales israelíes tanto en la

frontera con Jordania como en el Aeropuerto Ben Gurion.

La estructura de todos es similar: hacer un conjunto de preguntas y sistemáticamente repetirlas una y otra vez de manera aleatoria, ya sea para que uno finalmente responda lo que ellos sospechan: que uno estuvo con palestinos o visitó territorios palestinos; o para que uno mismo empiece a sospechar de que hizo algo muy malo y confiese que estuvo con palestinos y visitó sus territorios.

Al final se trata de someter al sospechoso, instaurar miedo y por asociación, dejarlo adoctrinado o castigado por haber faltado al principio de lealtad que establece que es traición tratar con cualquier palestino, porque cualquiera de ellos es el enemigo.

IGLESIA DE LA NATIVIDAD, BELÉN.

Recientemente, Benjamin Netanyahu fue reelegido (por quinta vez) como Primer Ministro de Israel, a pesar de enfrentar cargos de corrupción. En su campaña prometió, entre otras ideas igual de amenazantes, anexar a Israel muchos de los asentamientos que se han establecido en Cisjordania de manera ilegal.

Sé que el arte por sí mismo no puede cambiar una sociedad, su política ni su economía ni nada. Pero qué pasaría si ni siquiera tuviéramos espacios para imaginar desde las prácticas creativas otras formas de relacionarnos. El arte puede propiciar experiencias que a manera de ensayo propongan otras políticas y otras economías, basadas en los afectos y teniendo como meta común la construcción de estructuras de apoyo solidarias donde en el centro esté la vida.

Mi experiencia en cada organización que visité, con cada persona que conocí en este viaje y en esta asamblea, está relacionada justamente con pensar en sistemas de solidaridad y desarrollar estrategias de resistencia y resiliencia en comunidad. Bajo ese foco, la acción personal se convierte en la base con la cual este tipo de tejido empieza a formarse. Volví con la conciencia de que las fronteras

individuales se van replicando, como en contagio, hasta alcanzar fronteras colectivas que después se materializan en territorios, en sistemas e ideologías. Es desde este conocimiento de nuestras propias fronteras, las elegidas y las impuestas, que tenemos la posibilidad de aprender a negociarlas o no. De alguna manera, es lo que hace que nuestra individualidad sea capaz de existir con otras individualidades en los distintos colectivos en los que se van desenvolviendo nuestras vidas.

EJERCICIOS DE (APROPIACIÓN DE LA) AUTONOMÍA PRIMERA PARTE, LA INVITACIÓN VINCULATORIA: os invitan a participar de uno de los des/montajes que organiza el Centro Cultural de España (CCE). Pablo Hernández, quien coordina el proyecto, nos convocó a una reunión (a cada una por su lado) para trabajar con la exposición “Ejercicios de Autonomía” (2018) en TEOR/éTica, de las artistas Priscilla Monge y Victoria Cabezas, curada por Miguel A. López.

Partiendo de la noción entre público y lo privado –el eje filosófico desde donde se nos invitó pensar la muestra–, conversamos sobre las posibilidades de proponer un ejercicio de mediación de la

casa y amigas, influenciaban algunas de las relaciones que intuíamos estaban presentes en la exposición. Empezamos entonces por ahí, por el reflejo, por las resonancias.

Fue simpático darnos cuenta que nosotras podíamos reflejar, de alguna forma, a Priscilla y a Vicky. Había en la exposición un juego de duplas que buscamos potenciar desde nuestros cuerpos. Algunas imágenes nos lanzaban a escenificar y a acuerpar las situaciones que las piezas de ambas artistas proponían. Nos lanzamos luego al accionar conjunto desde nuestros cuerpos.

SEGUNDA PARTE, APROPIACIÓN DE LA AUTONOMÍA: Cocinamos nuestros planes. Fuimos una, dos y tres veces a la exposición, la recorrimos juntas y por separado.

Nos compartimos audios y mails y coincidimos en una estructura que, por asuntos formativos y de archivo, deseamos compartir: SE PLANTEARON LAS SIGUIENTES ACCIONES: exposición. Un punto de partida fue ubicarnos frente a las piezas desde nuestras experiencias individuales, como espectros que se reflejan ante algunas de las piezas de la muestra.

Después, coincidimos en que las experiencias que compartimos viviendo juntas, por casi 4 años, como compañeras de

2. Invitaremos a recorrer las salas de TEOR/éTica (cruzando la calle) y de Lado V (donde nos encontramos en un inicio). Cada persona a su tiempo. Nos veremos en 10 minutos en Lado V, en el primer salón después de la entrada principal.

6. Ellas se ubican cerca de la pieza de Victoria donde una pareja se besa, allí conversarán sobre los primeros besos, sobre el compartirse con él o la otra, etc. Quizás las personas quieran conversar con ellas, se abrirá la posibilidad de que eso suceda...

NOTA: En el salón de la izquierda del Lado V, junto a la pieza de Priscilla, con la carta bordada, tendremos hojas blancas y lapiceros en una banca, instrucciones en una hoja. Seguramente algunas personas escribirán sus cartas… es libre, las personas que vean las instrucciones, podrían participar, si les interesa el ejercicio.

7. Después de observar el salón con las piezas sobre fútbol de Priscilla, se les pedirá a los participantes dividirse en dos hileras, esto se realizará en tono imperativo, más frío, mediado por un silbido: división entre hombres y mujeres. Con estas hileras organizadas, cruzarán primero los hombres, luego las mujeres, en fila india, de vuelta al Lado V, para ver la segunda parte de la muestra.

3. Al ser la hora, en el cuarto de los autorretratos (así nombramos la sala donde se exhiben las dos fotografías de Priscilla con vestido blanco) Mariela y Grettel se presentarán una a la otra. Esta secuencia de acciones son pequeñas, casi entre ellas, por lo que puede que sean imperceptibles para los participantes. Eso estaría bien.

4. Pintarse los labios como ellas. Frente a la foto de dos rostros de mujeres, delineamos los labios lo más parecido a cada fotografía.

5. Mientras las personas ven la muestra, Grettel y Mariela caminarán por la muestra, en algunas de las piezas se quedarán observando una al lado de la otra. Frente a la secuencia de fotografías de Victoria con el televisor, Grettel contará su experiencia en el amor de telenovela.

Mariela la observa y accionará un audio desde su teléfono, a modo de DJ de música plancha.

8. Al cruzar, el grupo femenino se irá al salón de los relojes (verá pasar el tiempo frente a una de las piezas de Priscilla) y el otro grupo (el masculino) pasará al cuarto de los bananos. Grettel y Mariela se colocarían como las custodias de ambas salas. Se ven los unxs frente a los otrxs en silencio.

9. Cerrar la acción anterior, como un silbido fuerte, que cortará el tiempo. Nos acercamos al cierre con la carta dirigida a Priscilla, como respuesta a su tejido en forma de correspondencia (Dear Priscilla, 1992). Grettel y Mariela inician la acción, sin embargo, las personas pueden acceder a su lectura desde un micrófono.

pelo largo y claro. Era directora (me parece) de la Escuela de Artes Plásticas de la UCR cuando yo entré a la UCR. Confieso ante ustedes, que no conocía su obra.

De Priscilla, lo primero que recordaba era su trabajo en espacio público con ese traje o indumentaria de algodón, una especie de overol blanco, que construyó con toallas sanitarias que poco a poco, por el paso del tiempo y el fluir de la sangre menstrual, se fue transformando a uno rojo.

Conocí ese trabajo, mientras terminaba mi licenciatura en la UNA con énfasis en performance y veíamos ejemplos de artistas centroamericanas. Luego me fui encontrando con otros trabajos, podría ubicar uno de ellos más en el campo del video-performance.

TERCERA PARTE, CÓMO SUCEDIÓ LO QUE SUCEDIÓ:

El encuentro con Victoria y Priscilla fue una mirada al espejo a través de las piezas de la exposición. El camino de encuentro con las artistas y sus trabajos ha sido por pedazos en el tiempo, hasta finalmente hablar con ellas directamente. De Victoria lo primero que recordaba era su

Yo no pertenezco al campo de las artes visuales, por tanto, ellas no han sido referentes inmediatos para mí en el pasado. Me he ido encontrando con sus trabajos y sus personas muchos años después. Soy de formación teatral originalmente. Lo que pasa es que soy de esas “raras” de teatro que les gusta navegar en los terrenos de lo fronterizo, lo interdisciplinar y lo colaborativo. En esto, me he ido encontrando con gentes distintas en su hacer, pero con quienes puedo encontrar de igual forma mucho diálogo a través de sus trabajos. Victoria y Priscilla son un ejemplo de eso.

El “segundo” encuentro fue con sus piezas y sus planteamientos en la expo, la cual recorrí varias veces y en la que permanecí un tiempo, encontrando qué me producía desde/en el cuerpo. Fue el día del ejercicio de mediación donde pude dialogar brevemente con esta mujer y artista tan dulce e interesante que es Victoria Cabezas, la cual

miraba atenta y curiosa lo que hacíamos, como una niña descubriendo cosas. Además de escuchar lo que las personas participantes al ejercicio compartían y experimentaban desde sus cuerpos.

El encuentro más personal (el “tercero”) fue cuando fuimos a la casa de Priscilla y estuvimos finalmente las cuatro juntas. Priscilla nos recibió de forma espléndida, preparó una comida riquísima que cerró con el postre estrella de Vicky y nuestra iniciativa de tomarnos unos vinitos, para acompañar semejante experiencia, tanto culinaria como de encuentro e intercambio. Estando ahí me encontré con las mujeres, no sólo las creadoras; con las dimensiones de lo temporal, generaciones distintas en diálogo. Me encontré con rastros de sus historias dejando huella en sus trabajos. Comer, compartir, escuchar desde lo cotidiano, es también mediar entre la persona, la artista y su obra. Lo personal de alguna manera nos atraviesa de formas muy diversas en lo que hacemos como artistas, cada una desde nuestros lenguajes, estéticas y poéticas.

Mariela y yo, que ya habíamos convivido juntas por tres años, de ser compañeras de labor, de teatro, de performance, de pedagogías y de vida, ahora nos encontrábamos desde nuestras historias, corporalidades y subjetividades, con estas dos mujeres. Dos mujeres de distintas generaciones dialogando entre ellas gracias a la curaduría de Miguel, que supo ver el potencial de este diálogo entre sus trabajos, que no habían estado juntos antes, y con trabajos que tal vez no eran tan conocidos para el público general.

El enfrentamiento entre nosotras y sus obras fue intenso

pero nunca violento, incluso cuando algunos de sus trabajos nos colocaran (y colocaran a las espectadoras) en lugares que bordeaban la energía violenta, por la fuerza y por lo que a veces ponían ahí, frente a nuestros cuerpos y nuestras miradas.

La invitación al ejercicio de mediación fue una posibilidad de generar redes de intercambio, diálogo interdisciplinar, ejercicio de traducción, de espejo y de encuentro. De poner el cuerpo frente a sus piezas. Cuerpos presentes

EL CAMINO DE MARIELA HACIA EL ENCUENTRO CON EJERCICIOS DE AUTONOMÍA:

Grettel y yo cocinamos todo muy lentamente. Nosotras tenemos algunos años de conocernos, de trabajar juntas y de vivir en una misma casa. Por esos enlaces, quizá es más fácil coincidir en ideas, tiempos y posibilidades.

Mediar una exposición como “Ejercicios de Autonomía” me retaba pero no me intimidaba. Tenía muchas expectativas de dialogar con Grettel enfrentando sus narraciones y las mías en relación con Vicky y Priscilla.

en carne, frente a cuerpos, objetos y huellas materiales que registran presencias o ausencias. Presencias que se insinúan a través de sus piezas. Cuerpos que dialogan con estas piezas desde otros niveles sensoriales, que buscan ampliar la acción contemplativa a una sentipensante o bien la contemplación con y desde el cuerpo en mayor integración: sensación-emoción-pensamiento, invitación a la acción, la escritura y la conexión entre persona-obra y contexto.

Espero con ansias más encuentros en el futuro, que este diálogo con ellas y sus trabajos no cierre acá…

Para mí, el trabajo de ambas era relativamente familiar, las había visto en varias muestras, en catálogos, en fin…

Al contrario de Grettel, ellas son referentes que tengo en mi imaginario desde hace varios años. En ese sentido, mediar la exposición se convirtió en una responsabilidad profesional-afectiva llena de posibilidades.

A la mediación me gusta verla como una red a la que hay que dar seguimiento desde distintos flancos, quizá el primero es el vínculo con una misma. Preguntarme qué me sucede cuando veo algunas de las piezas, qué siento, qué me dan ganas de hacer, en qué me quedo pensando…

Fui varias veces a la muestra para tratar de cuestionarme sobre eso que me convocaba. Fui a la inauguración, volví sola, fui con un grupo de estudiantes, volví con Grettel.

Todas fueron experiencias distintas.

una mujer con piel de animal, una mujer fuerte con ese sabor a humor ácido y lúdico que ella logra en esa pieza.

Para mí, todo empezó con ese trans-vestirnos de sus piezas, de ellas.

Todo el resto fue ir armando un rompecabezas donde ambas, Grettel y yo, desarrollamos un esquema de deseos, de acciones algunas como pequeños gestos - casi homenajes, que hacíamos a las piezas de la exposición, al trabajo de dos colegas que respetamos y admiramos.

CUARTA PARTE: LO QUE NOS LLEVAMOS DE LO SUCEDIDO: En general, me invitaban a crear espacios de diálogo. Son piezas que permiten expandir palabras, quedarnos tejiendo redes. Me vinculaba con memorias que no en todos los casos me involucraban, pero sí me eran cercanos: me gustaba pensar mi accionar a través de la piel de una de ellas, mutar, transformarnos escenográficamente en parte de sus universos.

Me animó la idea de vestirnos de manera en que alguna de las piezas se acercara a nuestro cuerpo. Seleccioné el banano de peluche de una de las piezas de Vicky como motor, busqué elementos que permitieran accionar como

EL TERCER ESPEJO: LO POLÍTICO DE SUS POÉTICAS

G: De blanco, frente a ella, Priscilla vestida de blanco.

G: La violencia, el tiempo, aquello que se ha depositado en lo “femenino” frente a “lo masculino”. Lo personal en el cuerpo como político o la política de lo personal.

G: En el presente, en pareja, frente a la serie del beso de Vicky y pensarme ahora en pareja.

M: Con un vestido texturado, casi animal, mimetizada con el territorio, mujer-fuerza. Tomar posición.

M: Acompañando los rituales, mirando y viviendo desde la experiencia de otras mujeres.

EL SEGUNDO ESPEJO: LOS LÍMITES ENTRE FICCIÓN Y REALIDAD G: Desde mi hacer, sus trabajos me invitaban a la acción, pensar en escenas, en generar dramaturgias posibles.

Sus piezas me insinuaban presencias ocultas, huellas de cuerpos en el tiempo. Ausencias. Presencias-ausentes.

Quería sentarme y escribir posibles personajes, presencias de ficción, escenas o pensar performances. Invitaban a la acción. Aún quiero…

M: Trabajar desde el cuerpo hacia los espacios, desde los espacios hacia los cuerpos, ficcionar los espacios y que éstos reaccionen en lo cotidiano. La piel como una poética que tiene una potencia experiencial que sostiene muchas voces, historias, memorias.

M: Partir de una misma para pensar la colectividad, activar más allá de la mirada. Pensar lo liminal de una mediación que no es una pieza artística por sí misma, pero tampoco es solamente una mediación educativa. Es y no es. (Ni-Ni) Ni arte ni educación, dirían mis colegas de pedagogías invisibles, si no, ese espacio en-medio-de. Poéticas que nacen del deseo, de los espacios desconocidos, del arriesgar desde el cuerpo, del tomar una posición clara, del disfrute y del ocio desde un profesionalismo y respeto como creadoras y facilitadoras al mismo tiempo.

here is not enough time to say everything we want to say. There are timelines, deadlines and rhythms that aren’t only ours. We don’t have enough hands to do everything we want to do. If we could, we would for sure be there every day putting our bodies on the line for every cause, both individual and collective ones. Budgets, spaces, ideas, alliances and encounters are not enough, because the needs are many and the struggle is long. Our strength is not enough. We become tired, we fail and get frustrated. But perhaps, all of that frustration is what we then regenerate and turn into new energies, precisely because we have learned to believe in our achievements, as much as in our failures.

Even more so, it is when we come together with others that we are able to understand, from the multiplicity of gaces and experiences, that which we liv and resist within our fields of action in arts and culture. For this reason, what we do have is a desire: a desire to tell what we did, saw and felt when we were together. We are excited at the possibility of shifting our gaze inwards, of being self critical and sharing what we have learned in the process.

Al this to continue resisting and supporting each other, offering our reflections to those who might need them.

On this occasion, the learning experience we want to share, comes from doing and managing, from connecting with each other and living together. We do not have enough hands, time slips away, while the urgencies continue to be many, and most of the work that goes into creating what the public experiences is left in the shadows of the unknown. However, in our context, it is possible to withstand this burden by coming together with friends and collaborators, to make the necessary reflections on the multiple "hows"of the work done by artistic spaces, collectives and projects of different natures. Furthermore, through those conversations, it is possible to make visible the thinking processes and the ways of doing that help construct spaces of encounter through art.

Trying to get a little closer to that which is often not seen, but that sustains us and gives us a foundation for the work we do, this Buchaca is another way to share the challenges, possible solutions, and critical dialogues, with so many people who accompany us in our way of thinking and doing. We hope it will be a place to meet and rest, which will contribute to create other paths for possible projects.

n August 2018 I was invited to TEOR éTica, along with Alina Hernández representing the collective La Hervidera, to open a laboratory called “Art to make education more flexible.” We used the space of La MAE (Memoria Artes Escénicas/ Performing Arts Memory) and called a group of fifteen educators, facilitators and artists, mostly from Costa Rica and some from Nicaragua and Panama.

We spent those days exploring artistic strategies to help us build a common language. We reflected on the possibilities and impossibilities of modifying, in our favor, the educational structures in which each of us was inserted. We tried to get to know each other a bit, in search of common complicities and stories.

The experience in San José, with each of these people, had an impact on me. It was transformative to find other problems and struggles, other possibilities of being an institution, an educator and an artist in a precarious context like mine, like all of Latin America, but at the same time so different. I could not focus the complexity of these experiences in a descriptive text, so I decided to write from my subjective vision.

This could be the collective dream of those of us who were there.

I am part of a living cultural organism. I feel my body: my insides are soft and warm; my skin is tough and multicolored. I am developing, I am still young, I have yet to grow and learn. My bones are covered by tissues that reveal to me a possibility to act in the world through symbolic and sensitive actions to achieve some kind of social reparation.

The problems are a-plenty, because I am part of a very toxic society. Some of my actions have an immediate effect, and I wonder: Can anyone benefit from my existence?

Having a good impact in the world is much more complicated than I imagined. I feel frustrated but I keep on.

I relocate my objectives. I try to act pointedly, one step at a time, with small actions that may (perhaps) achieve significant changes.

The situations of the people I address exceed what I have to offer. I try, but the features of my body do not allow me to heal other organisms or solve their structural conditions of violence and poverty. Having a good impact in the world is much more complicated than I imagined. I feel frustrated but I keep on. I relocate my objectives. I try to act pointedly, one step at a time, with small actions that may (perhaps) achieve significant changes.

My stride becomes dense and tired. I feel sick; I do not know how to heal. I have to achieve internal communication, unity with my body, but my language is not verbal, and my organs are disconnected. I have no channels to listen to myself. My head does not want to think. It is easily

bored and prefers to communicate with indicators and statistics. Although numbers are not my best language, I try. I select a series of images, I translate the sensible into words, a pdf capsule, a power point remedy... That’s good, at least for now I can go on.

The frustration continues. I see that this is common in cultural organizations with a social interest. Although concepts such as “critical thinking” and “collaboration” are part of the constitutive discourse of several species, the truth is that their bodies do not have really critical arteries, and their organs work disconnected from each other.

There may be other life forms elsewhere. I walk. I look for allies that can share tools with me to help me develop,

meet my goals, and suffer less. I look up and find another living cultural organism.

I am in front of her, a plastic institution. She is in the midst of a self-observation exercise and asks herself what her role is within the context she inhabits. I am impressed by her state of health. The people who compose her listen to each other, and also listen to those to whom their actions are directed. They seem to want to understand how the organism is perceived and to what processes it contributes, whether consciously or unconsciously.

Her skeleton has a structural flexibility that allows her to transform herself given the need for space and present time.

She develops a methodology of constant disarticulation.

She conceives herself, and this means different heads thinking at the same time: a heterogeneous agency building a collective identity through diversity, unified by common and mutating objectives.

I cannot believe it. I realize that her limits are not defined, her limbs are disconnected from her torso. She has an antenna over here, a wing over there, some fingers close by and some claws farther away. Her organs are kept together by a social fabric of affective relationships. Conflicts and crises are processes that make her sick; but, somehow, accepting her vulnerability makes her stronger. Each time she recovers, she seems more robust and striking.

I detach for a moment, but turn to see myself, and I am no longer the same. I feel fear. I try to ground myself, but I no longer have the form I used to. I have lost all the organs of my previous body! Am I floating around somewhere?

No, I have just lost my head. I am bound to this new organism, although I am separated from it. I feel like we share impulses and fluids, even thoughts. How is this happening? What does it mean? Maybe I am a parasite, and my existence depends on jumping from body to body.

The idea unsettles me.

I concentrate. My goal was to be a body acting from the symbolic and the sensitive towards some kind of social reparation. For that, maybe, I do not need a head. What do I need to repair? I feel dizzy. How do I repair myself? I breathe in once, twice, three times.

There is silence. A distant voice responds: - “Everything.”

- “And how do we do that?”

- “I do not know. For now, we are trying to recognize ourselves, we believe that this can help us understand what direction to take and how to get there.”

- “Do you recognize me?”

- “Of course, because you are part of this organism.

Do you not recognize me?”

- “Well, now that you say it... you seem very familiar.”

All the voices laugh.

I bend over as far as I can, and I relax, stretch, and feel that my limits are flexible. I need to talk to someone. I sound my voice inward, the body to which I am attached responds, though it is now bound to a few other bodies. I hear many voices; they speak things that I cannot understand. I turn around and see my body. I had not really stopped to observe it. I see my insides and veins extending far away, in all directions. We are a mega talking organism. I prepare to ask the question, and I say it out loud, firmly, so that those who are farther away can hear me: “What do we need to repair?”

Our body is strengthened, but society remains toxic. I think I am united with them in the possibilities of the future. Our immediate actions have positive impacts and potential, small but situated. We do not lower our guard or stop listening to each other. Every now and then, voices burst through the general murmur, to locate us in time and space. We try to keep ourselves healthy as people and as a cultural organism. We do it through critical thinking and collaboration. I feel a pulse, a rhythm that moves me from side to side; the organism moves. I decide, I do not resist, I feel the rhythm.

Plural Story

A kin + Affectionate

TEOR/éTica is a plural story. We wish to build a generous narrative. One that, far from homogenizing or suppressing the individual voices of all of us who participate in this construction, can recognize the individualities and enhance different points of view. Several questions spring from that. We found some echoing very nicely in a text that Mónica Hoff shared with us: How to live alone, by Peter Pal Pelbart in Philosophies of the Desertion:

People with whom we have found common territories from which to build alternatives to the processes and forms that we question. We do not always resemble one another; we do not always agree; we do not come from the same places, nor do we seek to arrive at the same destination or using the same routes. We are an intermittent, fluid, and spontaneous support network, through which we exchange knowledge and doubts, seeking to learn and unlearn. We have invited many to our space in San José, creating moments of exchange, discussion, and intellectual cannibalism. We have met others as we go about our lives. Some relationships are weaved over time; others are more intense and ephemeral. Affections and affinities have varying intensities. Many of the people with whom we create projects, ideas and processes end up being our friends.

How to sustain a collectivity and at the same time preserve the dimension of singularity for each and every one? How to create heterogeneous spaces, with their own tonalities, distinct atmospheres, allowing each to connect in his or her own way? How to maintain an availability that facilitates encounters, but does not impose them, an attention that allows for contact and preserves alterity? How to make

Entanglement Literally and not so literally, entanglement is related to bodies, ours and theirs. Bonding beyond one collaboration: wrapping one’s legs around another is holding each other enmeshed, to the point of becoming completely intertwined with the body of the other −for a long time, in order to create and advance together−, accepting the emotional complexities that it implies. This term was originally a free translation −the one that worked best for us− of the English term ‘entanglement.’ Obviously, it has surpassed it.

Wavy Anything wavy carries a rhythm that has its ups and downs, its oscillations, some predictable and others less so. It is not a flat line or an infinite straight line. We do not even know if it is a line at all. It is an energy or an intention that rises and falls, assumes or delegates.

Wavy Horizontality /Wavy Leadership

We like to think about the concept of horizontality in relation to how we affect each other and the way we choose to deal with power relations. Initially, we applied the term to the organizational part of the institution, speaking of wavy horizontality and wavy leadership. In our case, absolute horizontality does not work for us.

Our task calls for a certain type of leadership. The wavy character allows us to delegate responsibilities, to rotate or take turns in leadership: one day you are the leader and the next day you let yourself be guided and supported.

The wavy character allows for more or less horizontal moments, according to the needs of the team or the projects, without ever becoming vertical as a synonym for authority or command.

Wavy Moods

Cachimbo-meter

We all have wavy moods. Days of rage; effusive days; days of sadness; personal and unutterable squabbles; family predicaments; and other, more normal, days. None of us is exempt from meteorological phenomena, lunar cycles, or the effects of personal relationships. We try to recognize these among ourselves and to assume them as part of life; and not as an anomaly or an interruption to the system of productivity. Sometimes, you cannot bear it. And all is good.

In collective work, each person’s tempers and moods have profound effects on the whole group. The times of difficulty become more bearable when energies are clearly communicated, and the group is aware of where they are. The Cachimbo-meter is our way of measuring how each one of us is doing. We know that we can use it to communicate that we are fed up; that we need empathy. This sometimes translates to needing space and silence. Sometimes, it means listening or cradling; or it is simply being aware of the state of the other. It helps us to measure the energy of the group by asking for the reading of each person’s own Incense-o-meter. It is one of the ways in which we practice affection and care towards the emotional states and personal lives of each one of us.

The difficult thing about moods is recognizing them. Our own and others’ moods. Many times, we explode without warning. Some venting would have dissipated aggressive and damaging energies. A hug often dilutes frustrations.

But how do we recognize and communicate that something is happening to us, even if we do not know what? How do we know that something is happening to the other?

How can we know if it is best to stay silent or to talk? In an attempt to create an alert system, we invented the Incense-o-meter.

The Cachimbo-meter is an idea, not an object. It can be manifested through text messages, emails, spontaneous outbursts exits or however it can. When we are screwed up −out of our center−, talking is complicated. Having a fun and specific word for it is like having a key that allows us to use humor to more fluidly access areas that are difficult, sensitive, dark, and less traveled.

Speaking Clearly We do not always tell it like it is.

For us, speaking clearly works best.

Between delighting and saying

It is easier said than done, as the saying goes. Between delighting and saying, we find the space to edit everything that excites us but erodes us. In delight, euphoria and illusion, we invent, we assemble, we embody, we conspire; it is a time of joy and imagination, i.e. overflowing possibilities. Then, we edit, appealing to deadlines, energies and possibilities within our reach. It is the ambiguous space of building and letting go.

We demand each other to speak clearly.

Speaking clearly means caring and respecting. Speaking clearly builds trust.

It is the only place from which we believe that healthy, deep, and meaningful relationships can be built.

Shillings There are magic shillings and nomadic shillings. And there are shillings as is. Magic shillings can be stretched a lot with ingenuity, careful management, and creativity to achieve production savings... and they become nomadic shillings when savings from one project are moved to another by adjusting any small imbalances between the speculation of budgets and the real conditions in which projects are developed.

Ultimately, shillings are financial resources. Working in an institution with a stable financial and administrative structure that has operated for almost twenty years is, to some extent, a privilege. It is a condition that should not be overlooked. Having regular salaries means that one can experiment from a place of relative calm. We are aware of how this affects the ease with which projects arise.

Wheelings and

Chaordic “Chaordic” is a term that we recently heard from the Greek facilitators of the “Art of Hosting” in the last Arts Collaboratory assembly. It refers to the space where order and chaos intersect. It is a space where there is a “controlled chaos,” or a chaos that is ordered by just asking a good question. It symbolizes fertile ground populated by the creativity and experimentation needed to make transformations possible. It is the space where we want to be to avoid falling into total chaos, while escaping a standardized order that could lead to control that creates a paralyzing space.

Dealings

We work from a platform of trust, configured in such a way that we have been able to question and rethink its own structures, as well as making certain changes that could be considered risky or kamikaze, such as implementing collective direction. We work from a place of great autonomy, which is undoubtedly a privilege. It is also a privilege to have support networks, work networks and networks of thought. Doing and undoing under these conditions, within this framework, certainly gives us a very useful containment to try, experiment, make mistakes and move on.

Failing better Inspired by a famous quote by Samuel Beckett, far from being a slogan to clear our consciences if something goes wrong, it is rather the possibility or the permission for things not to go as we had planned. We give ourselves the possibility of returning to these ‘failures’ as opportunities

for reflection, for continuous learning, for revision. It is the possibility of trying without fear.

More than arriving (where?), we are interested in finding new roads: more fun or more significant, or lighter roads.

Failing better is giving yourself the chance to find other ways.

Being One-Eyed It is alright not to see everything. Sometimes it is okay to take a step in the dark, without knowing what will follow.

Quoting Diego del Pozo, who introduced us to this image, through conversations and drawings: “The one-eyed person is another image of the impossibility of knowing everything about the real, and an awareness of fighting that limitation to affirm oneself in the need for wanting to know.”

Banga Banga means to make “space and time.” It is a specific moment of encounter in which an organization calls others to help, to gather and think/study about a specific subject.

It is a term we have adopted from the Arts Collaboratory network. We called a Banga in January of 2017 to rethink the institution. By institution, we mean the forms and ways of doing, the organizational structure, the internal practices and relationships, and our means of connecting with the ecosystem.

been codified”. For us, study is a way to be together to learn, research and explore concerns. Our self-critical management process is a way of studying from the institution. It is perhaps the project on which we spend more time.

Inhabiting We inhabit a body We inhabit life We inhabit spaces

Alter Alter comes from Alter Academy. The idea of Alter goes beyond the project. It has become a response to what is not, what is not yet here, or what must be invented; to what could be, or the desire for something different; looking for ways to address gaps, needs, and concerns.

There are four Alters each year. We give them the keys of the institution, so that they may come and go as they please and do not depend on us to make use of the space.

Sharing the keys to our space with others is a strategy to dislodge the institution’s regular operation with a more direct practice of the commons. This gesture of openness and absolute trust, both symbolic and practical, triggers a bond that allows us to inhabit the space as our own.

And, in this case, we also inhabit an institution; by inhabiting it, we build it. The institution without the people that inhabit it, with our presences and our daily decisions, is just a shell, mere potential. Institutions do not exist by themselves.

The TEOR/éTica of today is comprised of the people that affect its evolution, its day to day, and its constitution. It is us, the work team; the interlocutors who are passing through, in longer or shorter stays related to projects; it is the users who visit and use the space; it is the academic alters who came this year and in previous years; and it is the people who were on the team and are still connected.

TEOR/éTica has been inhabited −and therefore constantly built and rebuilt− by many people and groups of people... each person, each group, permeated it with their interests.

TEOR/éTica is a happily porous institution.

UPE!

Agency

In Costa Rica, this is an interjection used to knock on someone’s door or to attract attention and enter a group or conversation. For us, ¡UPE! is the vehicle through which we acquire awareness and recognize ourselves as part of the spatial and social fabric in which we are located geographically: Barrio Amón. So we allow ourselves to interact −specially to listen−, to address our influence in the public space from the particularity of our own space, which, despite being a private space, is not for private use.

It has a public vocation and responsibility.

The term agency is very well defined by the project Subtramas de España:

“A word derived from the Latin verb ago, agis, agere, which means to do, to act. Agency translates into the capacity of the subject to generate non-hegemonic critical spaces of enunciation of the self, in and from the collective, to counteract the logic of control imposed on it. In this way, agency challenges the hegemony of the normative, homogeneous and fixed to operate different nodes/agents that relate to each other and to the outside.”

TEOR/éTica is a cultural space that seeks to politically influence the context through its projects and alliances.

It is related to doing, but also providing a platform to accompany and empower other projects that probe us through their content and form.

t is not customary, in the field of culture, to meet people who revel in thoroughly understanding the cultural policies of their environment and the legal frameworks that sustain them, to try and comprehend the complex social, political and economic structures that drive them. But I do. In my work as coordinator in Invisible Pedagogies and as member of the Education Group of Matadero Madrid (until its end of residence in 2018), I have tried to question and research cultural institutions as a place of production of critical and emancipated knowledge. Below, I share a series of reflections that respond to a matter that has been on my mind for some time. In a context in which cultural institutions are de-politicized, insofar as they are put at the service of logics of accumulation and of the reproduction of hegemonic stories: How can we make them begin to understand themselves as political agents of social transformation?

LET US DO CULTURE, NOT EQUITY Neoliberal thinking detects niches of commercial exploitation in all areas of society, and culture is not free from this process of capitalization. The most immediate socio-political effect is that culture ceases to be understood as a common good to be understood as a resource. that promote lines of action based on quantitative −and not qualitative− efficiency standards.

We refer to policies that do not cover processes that are outside the logic of production and accumulation, which measure their successes and failures based on the number of visitors or the number of activities scheduled, instead of focusing on the social impact they produce or the transformation they have in their environment.

The immediate effect of this is the fact that cultural institutions begin to be managed as if they were private equity. We find cultural and museum institutions that have forgotten that their responsibility is not fulfilled within the Museum, but outside: in society and the context that surrounds them.

Cultural institutions, as spaces to articulate the generation of culture, must embody the role of representing society, as places of relationships and construction of social fabric.

If this premise is not clear when outlining the cultural policies that will serve as a framework for action, we will have self-referential institutions, interested in displaying their own discourse and not in generating new layers of knowledge and critical thinking around issues of social relevance.

THE MUSEUM IS A FACTORY If culture is a resource, the museum is the factory in which it is produced. Contemporary cultural institutions have become a kind of post-Fordist factory: planning, installation, carpentry, maintenance, visits, more visits, temporary exhibitions, transport of works, insurance, construction, waste... The concept of “production� is at the center of all Museum activity. Programming closes after at least two years on exhibit. There is no time for reflection, there is not

enough space to stop and think about the true meaning of what we do. The colossal ball of capital begins to roll, and it is impossible to stop it.

The frantic rhythm does not allow for a critical construction of knowledge. There is no time to question the cultural policies that govern us.

This issue becomes especially alarming if we bear in mind that, as we mentioned before, the Museum is where narratives of power are legitimized. This power develops through countless everyday elements, exercising symbolic violence on the visitor, but which are not perceived because of that notion of everydayness to which we alluded. Nevertheless, they deeply modify our experience: chains to guide us; signs asking for silence; audio guides imposing a discourse; and mediators that reproduce pre-established narratives because they have not been given the place of relevance they deserve to generate their own discourses and stir minds so that others can do so, too. All these elements of control play a double role: on the one hand, they allow the quantitative efficiency standards of the Museum to grow exponentially (as we know, the more organized it is, the more it fits) and, on the other hand, they prevent the occurrence of critical and emancipated knowledge.

How is it possible that in the institution that should generate knowledge par excellence (besides schools), there are so many devices to prevent us from generating it? The truth is that the lack of interest of cultural institutions in proposing active participation mechanisms reveals that

their vocation is not the production of knowledge, and that their mission is not to contribute to strengthening the cultural fabric of their context. The Museum is a place where narratives of power are reproduced. It uses productivist logics to fall into frantic dynamics that de-politicize it and end up assimilating it into a factory.

THE CAPITAL VS. LIFE CONFLICT In order to generate a counter-narrative on these matters, we must critically position ourselves in light of the capital vs. life conflict.

A crucial moment to help me understand all this was when I came upon the book Subversión feminista de la economía (Feminist Subversion of the Economy) 1, by Amaia Pérez Orozco. It was around the time when I began questioning the potential of cultural institutions as political agents of social transformation, and this book helped me

concentrate in the right place: the conflict between the logics that cater to capital and those that cater to life.

It is based on the premise that, as eco-feminist Yayo Herrero states, we live in a biocidal system that has capital at its core and is moved by capital’s logics of accumulation, while life is resolved in peripheral, invisible spaces, which are domestic and usually feminized2.

The most immediate effect of this is that people end up having the possibility of socio-political representativeness, only insofar as we are productive for the system in terms of monetizable activity. This means that the logics of mercantilism and production are put in the center while the places in which life is sustained and cared for are relegated to invisible and de-politicized spheres.

This effect is directly related to placing commercial policies in the center. Anything that cannot be measured in terms of money, such as the activities of care, is left outside any political participation. That is how the alarming process of invisibilization occurs: as an exercise of power on the bodies that care, that produce welfare and not things, and strive for a life worth living. It is important to understand

that this idea of body is not related, in all cases, to a permanent situation. In some cases, it must be understood as an act of care, and we must reflect on its socio-political representativeness.

Hence, the subjects and actions located in these spaces do not have access channels to be able to exercise full economic and social power, which in turn means that they cannot become political subjects capable of offering resistance to the processes of accumulation.

On the other hand, institutions crystallize as carriers and reproducers of these same processes of invisibility. This is especially alarming in cultural institutions, which should be spaces to promote knowledge and critical thinking but which, nevertheless, are mere reproducers of hegemonic discourses, as a result of their de-politicization. In this sense, we should reiterate that this is especially alarming if we understand that, as Paul B. Preciado says, the museum is a performative apparatus, which produces both the object and the subject it claims to represent. This becomes the museum’s greatest potential: to assign a value of historical truth or universal and shared aesthetic to the issues and objects that are showcased in it3. To stop reproducing (and to knock down) this narrative of hegemonic power must be the fundamental objective of cultural institutions.

Therefore, it is precisely in those places where we must generate the counter-narratives to the stories of power, focusing our actions on the conflict of capital versus life, so that the institutions of knowledge creation begin

to understand themselves as political agents of social transformation.

FROM INSTITUTIONS AS THINGS TO INSTITUTIONS AS BONDS A few days ago, a good friend sent me the following joke, which sarcastically and very straight-forwardly exemplifies the times we are going through. It said: “If you are poor, you travel by Uber, you buy in Amazon, and you vote for the right, you are an imbecile.

“But Sir (Walter) Benjamin, we cannot write that.”

“Ok, then write: “Mankind’s self-alienation has reached such a degree that it can experience its own destruction as an aesthetic pleasure of the first order.”

Anthropologist Rita Laura Segato states that: “humanity is immersed in an extreme and apocalyptic phase where plundering, displacing, uprooting and exploiting to the

We are running out of time. The opportunities to build a project of humanity that revolves around social justice are fewer and fewer. It has to be done by waning and, as Segato says, by moving from the historical project of things, to the historical project of bonds.6

She refers to the pedagogies of cruelty5, the acts and practices that teach, habituate and program subjects to transmute the living and their vitality into things. In other words, they are the pedagogies that anesthetize us in the face of social injustice and cause us to swing naturally towards the logic of capital, while leaving aside the logic that protects life.

did not know I had failed until I was asked to write for this section.

“What does it mean to fail?”, I asked the young man in hospital clothes, who sat next to me in the American chain cafeteria and studied effervescently. After looking at me as if I were crazy, he told me that failure was “...not learning anything.” I did not reply and continued doing my thing. I did not expect it. I think failing is when you have a goal that is so clear you can draw it in the most realistic style, and you know you have to learn to draw, but then not achieving that image and not even learning to draw.

The ¡UPE! project began as an experiment, not only because it is based on a question to which you genuinely do not know the answer, but also because the way in which it was to be answered had not been explored by TEOR/ética or by Semillas. In other words, the goal was never clear, and that is where we started down a winding road that was doomed to failure.

They say that if something does not have a name, it does not exist. We are a failure. I get such joy from saying this!

Now that I know we failed I can explain how to fail as best you can. Some tools served us, others not so much.

I guess that to fail you have to set goals that are so exact that the road is clearly illuminated, but to fail better we must turn off all the lights, walk in the dark and fall into all manner of holes.

But what happens if we turn the lights off on purpose? We did it because the road we could follow seemed so clear that it turned suspicious. We called everything into question and walked slowly for several months, because we could see Barrio Amón so clearly that it seemed false to us.

So, failure is something that scares us so much, because it forces us to take the time to question everything and everyone; to discover new truths and new voices, or voices that have always been there but do not show up in the books, in the exhibitions, and much less in mass cultural activities. And that is the key: time. It pains us to waste it, it is difficult to spend it, and it seems to be the most important thing in life. It seems, then, that failing is to waste time.

UPE In 2019, UPE! is joining (re)habitar, an extension and research project of the School of Architecture of the TEC (Costa Rican Institute of Technology) that proposes the opening of discussion spaces around the complexities, challenges and dynamics associated with (re)inhabiting the city, specifically the Amon and Otoya neighborhoods ; as well as to collaborate in a publication that will compile the procedural work of ¡UPE! from 2017 to 2019.

BORDER NEGOTIATIONS Notes on a trip from June 19 to July 3, 2018 to Jerusalem, Palestine (West Bank) and Amman, Jordan, narrating a series of experiences across borders −whether geopolitical, mental, emotional, individual, collective, religious, artistic, or relating to language and identity.

n 2018, for the fourth consecutive time, I had the opportunity to attend the annual assembly of Arts Collaboratory (AC). The hosts of this assembly were the organizations: Ashkal Alwan (Beirut, Lebanon); Al Ma’mal (East Jerusalem, Palestine) and Riwaq (Ramallah, Palestine). The idea of holding this gathering in the Middle East had been in the works for years. In 2016, the plan was to have the meeting in

Lebanon, but since it was impossible for members of Palestinian organizations to be admitted to that country, the event was moved to another location. So, for 2018 the proposal was as follows: half of the members of the network would travel to Lebanon, the other half to Palestine and, at the end, we would all meet in Jordan, a territory, that we might say is neutral for Palestinians.

I chose the combination of Palestine and Jordan.

strayed from the path to show me a refugee camp, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the view of this city from the Mount of Olives. We arrived at the Jaffa Gate, on the perimeter of the old walled city of Jerusalem. Some girls from Al Ma’mal, the private foundation devoted to contemporary art to which Aline belongs, were waiting for us and received the fruits. Aline and I drove quite a while to leave the car in a parking lot and enter through the New Gate, another entrance to the old city of Jerusalem, completely gentrified and full of tourist attractions. That day I remember being in Al Ma’mal, hearing its story, going out to eat falafel with Aline, running into many Orthodox Jewish boys. I remember especially one who looked at me and instantly blew his face against the wind to avoid meeting my gaze. That night, I went to bed early and at 3:00 a.m. I was awakened by the Muslim chants that immediately became the soundtrack of a merciless jetlag that kept me up all that cool night.

I arrived on June 20, 2018 in Tel Aviv late at night, after 21 hours of travel. Aline picked me up at Ben Gurion Airport and drove her car for more than an hour to her house in East Jerusalem. Next day, I had breakfast with Aline and her mother. They served me homemade bread, zatta, olive oil, cucumbers, watermelon and instant coffee. We went out to buy fruit for the snacks of the coming days. Aline

The assembly officially began on June 23. So, I still had one day to adjust my schedule and see a bit of the ancient city of Jerusalem. I settled in the hotel located inside the old city. Then, I went for a walk alone, along the perimeter marked by the city’s ancient walls. From Jaffa Gate, I went to the Armenian Quarter and left through Zion town gate, following a sign that led to the location of David’s last supper and tomb, as well as the church erected on the site where Mary is said to have died. I entered again through Zion gate and into the Jewish Quarter, by chance finding the Wailing Wall. There, I was asked to cover my shoulders. I wanted to approach the

worshiping and throwing themselves on the stone slab indicating the tomb of Jesus Christ, and weeping. Later, I was struck by a shop where you could have your picture taken with biblical passages in the background. After all this, I got the feeling of having been walking through different stories, as if I were inside a theme park of the monotheistic religions of our civilization.

The days would pass between visiting those cities, art centers, and meetings facilitated by Maria and Eirini, two Greek women from the organization “Art of Hosting,” who would assist us in our conversational processes to help us tackle the easy and difficult issues with the intent of confronting them and reaching agreements.

I was unable to go to the Dome of the Rock: for security reasons, you can only visit at certain times. Then I went to the Christian Quarter. I went inside the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. I saw many people

On the first day of the assembly, we met Daoud, a member of another Palestinian art organization, who offered to give us a walking and talking tour of the old city. His first question still resonates in my head. “Which Jerusalem are we talking about? Because every stone in this city has its own story,” he said defiantly. Daoud told us about the geopolitical complexities; he used some phrases like: the puzzle of Jerusalem; a continuous catastrophe; occupying the territories is a business; solving the Jewish problem in Europe; King David is a legend; who controls the land? He made it clear that whoever is in power can take ownership of a territory through the narrative they build about it. With Daoud, I went back to the different neighborhoods, only now I had his expert vision, which told us: “Why is there a mosque in the Christian Quarter?

divided before −there were no boundaries or fixed borders; peace is building a mosaic as a symbol of everyone living together; our struggle is to recover that memory.

DAOUD GUIDING THE WALK THROUGH THE OLD CITY IN JERUSALEM.

With Daoud we also visited a hoash, the Arabic word for courtyard. It is a type of ancient residential organization where each family shares one room and all these rooms face a central courtyard. What Daoud wanted to show us is how the Israeli occupation works. The strategy is to begin fragmenting these homes by placing an Israeli settler in one of the rooms. In addition, such occupants are switched around regularly, which means their rooms are neglected as compared to those with Palestinian families. There is also a heavy security system of surveillance cameras that inhibit the lives of local inhabitants.

A documentary by Issa Freij in 2006, called Last Supper (Abu Dis), narrates the experience of some Palestinian inhabitants of the town of Abu Dis, located on the outskirts of Jerusalem, while their houses are being surrounded by the wall built by the Israeli government, as an alleged security measure. The film clearly exposes the human rights violation and the strategies of fragmentation, colonization, and subjugation of the Israeli government upon the Palestinian dwellers. going through a Syrian Orthodox church to go to the Jewish Quarter, Daoud’s phrases I recall are: the purpose of dividing neighborhoods is to create conflict between religions; a strategy that works; the problem is related to territory and control, not religion; the city was not

To visit the West Bank was to go through military posts warning, in large red signs, that you are entering the Palestinian side. It was also to experience Israeli soldiers getting up on our minibus to check each of our passports with great scrutiny. We also learned that some Palestinians,

community. It cripples the possibility of reunion, and therefore works to weaken and dominate.

Hebron, located only 35 km south of Jerusalem, is the second largest city in the West Bank. It presumably hosts the tomb of Abraham, so it is sacred land for the Muslim, Christian, and Jewish religions. It once was an important economic, social and cultural center, though today it is known mostly as a ghost town, due to the negative impact of the occupation and its separation or segregation policies, which violate the human rights of thousands of Palestinians to protect the Israeli occupants of this city and its surroundings. This system of separation that has been installed in Hebron has forced many Palestinians to leave their own homes.

depending on their identification (there are 4 categories), cannot enter Jerusalem or need special permits to do so.

They cannot even go to certain areas of the territories grouped under the name of the West Bank. We understood how this physically separates entire families, but above all it undermines the oneness of what we call building

We visited the space that houses the organization called YAS (Youth Against Settlements). To get there, we had to navigate the military post on Shuhada Street, where two of our Palestinian hosts could not get through. We crossed it feeling dismayed at seeing them on the other side of the fence, and we wandered down empty and dusty streets to get to another military post where, after many questions, we were not allowed to keep going. Even so, our Palestinian hosts taught us that when they come up against a barrier, they stop just to think about other ways to get where they want to go. That’s how we turned around and started to climb some dry and dusty hills that stand firm in the sun, full of ancient olive trees. We arrived at the headquarters of YAS, a group of non-violent

activists seeking to end the construction and expansion of illegal Israeli settlements through non-violent popular struggle and civil resistance.

YAS (YOUTH AGAINST SETTLEMENTS), HEBRON.

Both Murad Amer and Muhanad Qafisheh told us about their personal experiences and how, to protect the illegal settlers, the Israeli state systematically imposes a regime of forced evictions, curfews, closures of streets and markets, military checkpoints, frequent random searches, and arrests without charges, as well as turning a blind eye to the unrestrained violence of the settlers against the Palestinians.

As we left YAS, we reunited with our friends who were waiting for us on the other side of the military post, and we walked to Hebron Rehabilitation Committee, who have dedicated themselves to revitalizing the life of the ancient city of Hebron, renovating historic buildings, as well as encouraging Palestinians to return to live there.

To date, around 1,300 apartments have been restored and almost 7,000 people have returned to the ancient city of Hebron. Not only do they renovate old buildings; they also rehabilitate the city’s infrastructure: streets, schools, and other services. Their legal department provides assistance recording and documenting violations of the Israeli state on the Palestinian population.

From Hebron we went to the city of Dahrieh. When leaving the Municipality of this city, I recognized something that I had already seen in the craft market of Hebron. It was a sign made of ceramic tiles, imitating traditional Palestinian tiles, which reads −both in Arabic and in

English− “Jerusalem,” and states the distance in kilometers from its location to the city of Jerusalem. I asked what it was, and that is how I learned about this work by Palestinian artist Khaled Houran, entitled Ramallah: The

Road to Jerusalem, of the year 2009. Khaled has installed the tiles in different points of the Palestinian territories under occupation. They display the physical distance to a territory not all Palestinians can reach (Jerusalem), though most of the time they serve as a cue that hints less at the actual physical distance (because sometimes it is ludicrous) and more at a metaphor for how distant the policies of exclusion and the neoliberal, colonial, and imperial challenges imposed by the Israeli occupation in Jerusalem and its Palestinian inhabitants are from rationality and humaneness.

How do networks operate, and what are they for? We met at the Al Hoash art center to talk about this. Both they and Al Ma’mal are part of the Art Network of Jerusalem “SHAFAQ,” and jointly organize a series of events with the purpose of reactivating cooperation and supporting life and Palestinian resilience in Jerusalem.

Reflections within AC revolved around these questions: What does it mean to have a support network? What is our common vision or purpose? Where are we going as a network? The most significant phrases that I take away from that meeting are: in a network, it is more feasible to face challenges; instead of being one, being a movement; networks create presence and unity, the opposite of fragmentation and invisibility; gathering in recognizing our need for the other.

On June 26, we left our hotel in the ancient city of Jerusalem and went to Ramallah. This is the city that hosts Riwaq, who have spent the last 28 years preserving Palestinian collective memory through projects that document and restore architectural heritage sites in the West Bank and Gaza. It is a team mostly made up of architects with expertise in restoration and landscaping, who undertake joint efforts with the communities to recover their memory and somehow reclaim their existence and permanence in these territories. Ramallah is part of “Territory A,” i.e. despite being under Palestinian control, the area is under Israeli military occupation, and Israel could intervene at any time. Ramallah is the de facto capital of Palestine, and seat of the provisional government of the PNA (Palestinian National Authority), which claims an independent Palestine and for East Jerusalem to be its capital city. (It is currently annexed and proclaimed as part of the Israeli capital.)

Meeting Yazan Khalili, director of Khalil Sakakini Cultural Center, was one of the most stimulating experiences.

The center is going through a moment of reflection by testing a management model that seeks to revitalize its activities, not only by rethinking its programming and audience, but also by trying more collaborative and sustainable forms of production and management that involve the center’s engagement with the community and vice versa, in order to build a structure based on solidarity.

association that works with young Palestinians between 13 and 25 years of age to strengthen their leadership skills and support them in developing projects based on their own needs and rights, so they may have tools to adapt

to their contextual situation, as well as confidence and hope to build a democratic society.

ON THE ROAD FROM JORDAN BORDER TO EAST JERUSALEM.

Today I looked for an individual seat on the minibus, so I could get lost gazing into the arid desert landscape on the way to Qalandiya and think about why I was seeing these realities. I felt deeply saddened, and suddenly found other types of violence, indifference, and fragmentation in my own life. For example, I thought about my own family unit, how it was impossible to communicate with my parents. I remembered the negotiations in my youth to defend my passing from mother’s territory to father’s territory, and vice versa. I asked myself: Where does violence begin? And fragmentation? Indifference towards the other?

The last day in Ramallah, June 28, we went to Birzeit, directly to the Palestine Museum. After seeing the temporary exhibition, we had a long work session facilitated by our friends from Art of Hosting. It was a nurturing conversation that reflected upon understanding ourselves as living systems, and not separate machines, and on the importance of creating spaces to listen and converse with intention.

Of everything we talked about, what most impressed me was the possibility of learning to be in the space between knowing and not knowing, a space between chaos and order that is precisely the right place for creativity. The metaphor is that systems located wholly on the side of order lead to death. For example, the system of Israeli

occupation and control over the Palestinian territories.

Likewise, on the other side of the spectrum, complete chaos is also equivalent to death. How to situate oneself in that intersection between chaos and order, where there is a framework or a foundation to sustain and help generate the conditions for creativity, renewal, and transformation to arise from a bit of disorder? The paradox is ever present; art emerges in this tension.

shell... this simple act questions the meaning of returning something in order to restore balance, but one knows the impossibility of such a task and/or dream. The act of trying to fit the seeds where they supposedly belong becomes an act of chaos. It is ritualistic and obsessive... the seed does not always fit perfectly ... The seeds are displaced; their displacement is to be found in the fact that they exist outside of their skin (nest, home, nature), and also in the hope of a perfect return and the danger of an irregular placement ... “

The last stop before leaving Ramallah was the opening of the AM Qattan Foundation and my encounter with The Pomegranate by Palestinian artist Jumana Emil Abboud. I freely recall some parts of The Pomegranate’s description (2005): “... the hands of the artist... meticulously attempting to return pomegranate seeds... back into the pomegranate’s

We took a bus to the Allenby bridge to cross to Amman, Jordan. By then, our Palestinian hosts Aline, Carol, Shata and Khaldun, had taken two different routes to cross from different points, as required by the Israeli state according to their identification documents. The only Palestinian hostess who was with us during this border crossing was Renad. She guided us gracefully from side to side, complying with all security requirements and other bureaucratic transactions. It was evident that, although we were passing different Palestinian and Jordanian military posts, really the whole operation is controlled by the Israeli government. By this I mean that there is an air of intimidation and suspicion towards any differences. Additionally, though it may seem unthinkable in the 21st century, some checkpoints and even buses are exclusively for Palestinians. This can only be called segregation.

In Amman, we finally had the assembly in full. It was almost like two rivers rushing to the sea: those of us who went to Palestine and those who went to Lebanon, each

one with quite different prior experiences, now mixing together in effusive greetings. Affection is an important part of the backbone that undergirds the AC network.

The three days of the meeting in Amman were hosted

by Darat al Funun, a private, non-profit organization devoted to the exhibition and research of contemporary art. Those three days, work sessions focused on agreeing on a series of decisions to clarify which working groups would remain in force, plus other decisions about our administration and internal communication. Likewise, after several sessions following participatory methodologies, the AC assembly defined its vision: “The purpose of Arts Collaboratory is to reimagine and generate ways of life, both locally and globally, through collective artistic practices”

The last thing I want to mention is my return home. First, my naive misunderstanding of my hosts’ suggestion of returning to my country leaving Jordan. In my practical mind, I did the math: It is easier and cheaper to buy a round trip ticket between two places: San José - Tel Aviv.

But my brain had not really grasped where I was going.

These realities can become so alien to us that we cannot even fathom them. I can now say I experienced first-hand (albeit in the lightest, least painful way, and only for a few minutes) processes of interrogation and intimidating scrutiny simply for being suspicious of having been with the “others.” I am not trying to sound very knowledgeable, but this has given me a slightly more rounded perception of the world we cohabit.

Upon returning to Costa Rica after these travel experiences, I wrote each of the interrogation dialogues I had with Israeli officers, both on the border with Jordan and at Ben Gurion Airport. The structure of all of them is similar: asking a series of questions and systematically repeating them again and again, randomly, either so that you finally admit to what they suspect (that you were with Palestinians or visited Palestinian territories), or so

that you yourself begin to suspect that you did something terribly bad and confess that you were with Palestinians and visited their territories. In the end, it is about subjecting the suspect, instilling fear and, by association, leaving them indoctrinated or punished for breaking the principle of loyalty that establishes that it is treachery to interact with any Palestinian, because any one of them is the enemy.

Recently, Benjamin Netanyahu was re-elected (for the fifth time) as Prime Minister of Israel, despite facing charges of corruption. In his campaign he promised, among other equally threatening ideas, to annex to Israel many of the settlements that have been established in the West Bank illegally.

I know that art by itself cannot change society, its politics or its economy, or anything. But what would happen if we did not even have spaces to imagine other ways of relating through creative practices? Art can promote experiences that attempt to propose other policies and other economies −based on affection− with the common goal of building life-centered, nurturing support structures.

My experience in each organization I visited, with each person I met on this trip and at this assembly, is precisely related to thinking about supportive systems and developing strategies of community resistance and resilience. With that purpose, personal action is the basis to help weave this type of tapestry. I came back with the awareness

that individual borders keep replicating themselves, in a form of contagion, reaching collective boundaries that later materialize in territories, systems, and ideologies.

In knowing our own borders −the ones we have chosen, and the ones imposed upon us−, we have the possibility of learning to negotiate them (or not). In a way, it is what makes our individuality capable of existing with other individualities in the different collectives in which our lives unfold.

EXERCISES OF (APPROPRIATION OF) AUTONOMY PART ONE, THE BINDING INVITATION: e are invited to participate in one of the de/installations organized by the Cultural Center of Spain (CCE). Pablo Hernández, who coordinates the project, called us to a meeting (each one on her own) to work with the exhibition “Ejercicios de Autonomía” (“Exercises of Autonomy”, 2018) in TEOR/éTica, by artists Priscilla Monge and Victoria Cabezas, curated by Miguel A. López.

Based on the notion between public and private -the philosophical axis from which we were invited to think about the exhibition-, we

Later, we agreed that the experiences we shared living together for almost 4 years as housemates and friends influenced some of the relationships we felt were present in the exhibition. So, we started there, with reflection, with resonances.

It was nice to realize that we could reflect Priscilla and Vicky in some way. The exhibition played with duets, and we aspired to enhance this from our bodies. Some images encouraged us to stage and embody the situations that the pieces of both artists proposed. We then plunged into joint actions through our bodies.

PART TWO, APPROPRIATION OF AUTONOMY: We cook our plans. We went one, two and three times to the exhibition; we went together and separately. We sent audios and emails and agreed on a structure that we want to share, for educational purposes and for the record: THE FOLLOWING ACTIONS WERE PROPOSED:

talked about the possibilities of proposing a mediation exercise for the exhibition. A starting point was to place ourselves in front of the pieces considering our individual experiences, as specters that are reflected in some of the pieces of the exhibit.

1. Arrival at TEOR/éTica 10 am. Chairs will be placed in a kind of semicircle. Pablo welcomes everyone, introduces us and then explains the dynamics.

(We might start about 20-25 minutes late while people arrive; it’s Saturday morning in San José, CR.)

2. We will invite the group to visit the rooms of TEOR/ éTica (across the street) and Lado V (where we meet at the beginning). Each person in their own time. We will reconvene in 10 minutes at Lado V, in the first room after the main entrance.

6. They stop near Victoria’s piece where a couple kisses.

There, they will talk about first kisses, about sharing yourself with another, etc. Maybe people might want to talk to them; the possibility of that happening will be open...

NOTE: In the room on the left of Lado V, next to Priscilla’s piece, along with the embroidered letter we will have blank sheets of paper and pens on a bench, and instructions on a sheet. Surely some people will write their own letters... it is optional; people who see the instructions can participate, if they are interested in the exercise.

7. After observing the room with Priscilla’s pieces on football, participants will be asked to divide in two rows. This will be done using an imperative, colder tone, mediated by a whistle: division between men and women. With these organized rows, men will cross first, then women, single file, back to Lado V, to see the second part of the exhibition.

3. When it is time, in the self-portrait room (we have given this name to the room exhibiting the two photographs of Priscilla in a white dress), Mariela and Grettel will introduce each other. This sequence of actions is brief, almost only between them, so it may be imperceptible to the participants. That would be fine.

8. When crossing, the women’s group will go to the clocks room (they will see time pass in front of one of Priscilla’s pieces) and the other group (masculine) will go to the banana room. Grettel and Mariela will position themselves as custodians to both rooms.

They face each other, in silence.

4. Painting your lips like them. In front of the photo of two women’s faces, we line the lips to match each photograph, as best we can.

9. Closing the previous action, like a loud whistle, that will cut time. We are approaching the closure with the letter addressed to Priscilla, in response to her weaving in the form of correspondence (Dear Priscilla, 1992). Grettel and Mariela start the action. However, people can access their reading from a microphone.

5. While people see the exhibition, Grettel and Mariela will walk through it. They will stay and observe some of the pieces, one next to the other. In front of Victoria’s sequence of photographs with the television, Grettel will share her experience in telenovela (soap opera) love.

Mariela observes her and will activate an audio from her phone, like a DJ playing sentimental (“plancha”) music.

10. At the end of the readings, we invite a circle, right where we started, to talk about the perceptions and close the activity.

her long, light-colored hair. She was the director (I think) of the School of Plastic Arts of the UCR when I started attending the UCR. I have to confess that I did not know her work.

From Priscilla, the first thing I remembered was her work in public spaces, with a cotton suit or garment, similar to white overalls, which she crafted with sanitary pads that -little by little and due to the passage of time and the flow of menstrual blood- turned red. I saw that work while I was finishing my degree at the UNA, with an emphasis on performance, and we saw examples of Central American artists. Then, I came across other works. I could place one of them more in the field of video-performance.

PART THREE, HOW EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED, HAPPENED:

A.

GRETTEL’S PATH TOWARDS THE ENCOUNTER WITH EXERCISES OF AUTONOMY:

The encounter with Victoria and Priscilla was a look in the mirror through the pieces of the exhibition. The path of meeting with the artists and their works has been through pieces in time, until finally talking to them directly. From Victoria, the first thing I remembered was

I do not belong to the field of visual arts. Therefore, they have not been immediate references for me in the past. I have been encountering their work and them many years later. I originally trained in theater. What happens is that I am one of those “rare” theater folk that enjoy navigating borders and interdisciplinary and collaborative terrains.

In doing so, I have met people who are different in their craft, but with whom I can find great dialogue through their work. Victoria and Priscilla are an example of that.

The “second” encounter was with their pieces and approaches in the expo, which I toured several times and where I remained for a while, finding what it produced from/in my body. The day of the mediation exercise, I could briefly talk to this very sweet and interesting woman and artist called Victoria Cabezas, who watched us closely and curiously, like a girl discovering things. She also

listened to what the participants of the exercise shared and experienced from their bodies.

The most personal encounter (the “third”) was when we went to Priscilla’s house and all four of us were finally together. Priscilla received us splendidly. She prepared a delicious meal that ended with Vicky’s star dessert and our initiative of having some wine to accompany this culinary experience of encounters and exchanges.

There, I met the women, not only the creators; with dimensions of time, different generations in dialogue. I found traces of their stories leaving their mark on their work. Eating, sharing, listening in the everyday is also mediating between the person, the artist and their work. The personal somehow spans us in very different ways through what we do as artists, each using our own languages, aesthetics and poetics.

Mariela and I had already lived together for three years, we had been companions at work, in theater, in performance, in teaching and in life. Now, from our own stories, bodies and subjectivities, we encountered these two women.

Two women of different generations talking to each other thanks to Miguel’s curatorship, who saw potential on this dialogue between their works, which had not been together before, and with works that perhaps were not very well known to the general public.

The confrontation between us and their works was intense, but never violent. Even when some of their pieces put us (and the viewers) in places bordering violent energy, by force and by what they sometimes put there, in front of our bodies and our gazes.

The invitation to the mediation exercise was a possibility to generate networks of exchange, interdisciplinary dialogue, an exercise of translation, mirroring and meeting. Of putting the body in front of their pieces. Bodies present in the flesh, in front of bodies, objects and material traces that record presences or absences. Presences that are insinuated through their pieces. Bodies that dialogue with these pieces from other sensory levels, seeking to

MARIELA’S PATH TOWARDS THE ENCOUNTER WITH EXERCISES OF AUTONOMY:

Grettel and I cooked everything very slowly. We have known each other for some time now, working together and living in the same house. Because of those ties, it is perhaps easier to have matching ideas, times and possibilities.

Mediating an exhibition as “Exercises of Autonomy” challenged me, but did not intimidate me. I had high expectations of dialoguing with Grettel, facing her narrations and mine in relation to Vicky and Priscilla.

For me, both of their work was relatively familiar. I had seen them in several exhibits, in catalogs. In short, unlike Grettel, they are references that I have had in my imagination for several years. In that sense, mediating the exhibition became a professional-affective responsibility full of possibilities. expand the contemplative action to feeling-thinking; or contemplation with and from the body towards greater integration: sensation-emotion-thought, invitation to action, writing and the connection between person-work and context.

I like to see mediation as a network that must be monitored from different sides. Perhaps the first is the connection to oneself. Asking myself what happens to me when I see some of the pieces; what I feel, what I want to do, what I’m thinking about...

I look forward to more meetings in the future, that this dialogue with them and their work does not end here...

I went to the show several times to try to question myself about what it stirred in me. I went to the opening,

I was keen on the idea of dressing in a way that some of the pieces approached our body. I selected the stuffed banana from one of Vicky’s pieces as inspiration. I looked for elements that allowed me to act like a woman with animal skin, a strong woman with a taste of tangy and playful humor that she achieves in that piece.

For me, it all started with that trans-dressing of their pieces, of them.

The rest was like putting together a puzzle, where both Grettel and I developed a pattern of desires, actions as small gestures -almost homages we made to the pieces of the exhibition, to the work of two colleagues we respect and admire.

PART FOUR: WHAT WE TAKE AWAY FROM WHAT HAPPENED: I returned alone, I went with a group of students, I went back with Grettel. These were all different experiences.

Overall, they invited me to create spaces for dialogue.

These pieces allow us to expand words, and weave networks. I connected with memories that did not involve me in all cases, but they were close to me: I liked to think of my actions through the skin of one of them, to mutate, to transform ourselves as on stage, into parts of their universes.

Facing their pieces was in the first instance an exercise of dialogue, from who we are and what we do. These were exercises of reflection, acts of projection.

THE FIRST MIRROR: THE MOST PERSONAL, THE PRESENTATION FROM EACH BODY, THE BOUNDARIES BETWEEN THE PUBLIC AND THE PRIVATE. GRETTEL ( G ) : Me, using ritual white, my loves, my unanswered letters, my cat, my solitude and my company.

THE THIRD MIRROR: THE POLITICAL IN THEIR POETICS

THE SECOND MIRROR: THE LIMITS BETWEEN FICTION AND REALITY G: From my craft, their works invited me to action, to think about scenes, to generate possible dramaturgies.

Their pieces insinuated hidden presences, traces of bodies in time. Absences. Absent-presences. I wanted to sit down and write possible characters, presences of fiction, scenes or think performances. They invited action. I still want to...

M: Working from the body towards the spaces, from the spaces towards the bodies, fictioning the spaces and having them react to the every day. Skin as poetics with an experiential power that holds many voices, stories, memories.

M: Beginning with yourself to think about collectiveness, to activate beyond the gaze. Thinking about the liminality of a mediation, which is not an artistic piece in itself, but neither is it just an educational mediation. It is and it is not. (Neither-Nor) Neither art nor education, as my colleagues from invisible pedagogies would say; or perhaps that space in-between. Poetics that spring from desire, unknown spaces, risking from the body, taking a clear stand, enjoyment and leisure from professionalism and respect as creators and facilitators at the same time.
